Les Recres Du Petit Nicolas.......2006-11-10
This is the book used in a French language course for adults. It is just the right book for this purpose
He never fails to amuse and teach .......2005-03-07
There are two things one can always expect from the series of "Le Petit Nicolas" books. To begin with they are always funny. And they are always easy to read --for any student of French. "Les Récrés du Petit Nicolas" couldn't be different.
This time round we meet the little garçon in his school break. So there is always a game, a conversation, something going on. They may fight, play soccer or take photos, but every time it will end up in confusion.
Goscinny found his perfect partner in crime in the illustrator Sémpe. The drawings are always exceptional and funny -- as much as the text. With his boyish mind, Nicholas never fails to make us laugh and learn French. The more you read the book, the more you want to read the other volumes.
An amusing and informative way to improve your French.......1999-08-11
My girlfriend is learning French, my maternal language, and she discovered (I rediscovered) the joys of Sempe ... a very amusing and simple language is used to describe the simple world of Nicholas, a 10-ish year old French boy. A definite recommendation.
A very nice and funny book.......1999-04-17
This is a book that brings you back to your childhood. It shows the world in it`s real light through the eyes of a 10yr old. It will certainly make you laugh and read it over and over again. I think this book is great. Make sure to read it.

Worthy.......2006-03-02
Nathan shows an excellent knack for complex plotting, especially for creating situations in which his characters are pulled in multiple directions by various loyalties and predilections. In The Broken Lance almost everyone is contemplating betraying everyone else, which results in a lot of enjoyable tension between the characters and suspense in the reader. It is a page turner. However, and I realize this is a sword and sorcery novel, at some points I found myself wishing the action scenes would get done with so as to get onto the more interesting plot considerations. On the other hand, that's probably just be my own preference. Action junkies likely will not be disappointed.
Blood, Guts and Trad Tragedy.......2006-01-14
As a long-time reader of Nathan Long's work (no pun intended, but it's rather nice, no?) and a noisy fan his first Blackhearts novel, Valnir's Bane, I thought I knew what to expect from this book. An anti-hero who schemes and winces and reluctantly -- sometimes accidentally -- makes smart choices. A misfit or two so maladroit and creepy that I want them to die. At least one horrible quandary that makes me think uncomfortable thoughts. And huge, gory battle scenes involving every bashing tool but the kitchen sink (oh, wait, there's a skaven just getting bashed over the head with a kitchen sink). Did I get what I expected? Absolutely! In overflowing pagefuls. Pages full? Anyway, in heaps and heaps.
I expected to like most of the characters. What I did not expect was to admire any of them. What I did not expect was a hero. And Long, damn his eyes, wrote a hero into this book. A traditionally tragic hero, to boot. So right in the middle of all my glee at the gore, I was also smearing away tears at moments of pathos.
Nathan Long, I hate you. Do it again.

Any who miss Star Trek will want this book!.......2007-02-08
Fans of Star Trek can't get enough, and STAR TREK: CONSTELLATIONS is a collection of stories that adds to the adventures of the cast of the Star Trek universe. Here are untold tales from such notable contributors as Stuart Moore, Jeff Bond, and more. There's even a story from Tokyopop's latest Star Trek manga. Unlike other single-book stories this is designed as part of the series' fortieth anniversary celebration and gathers new original tales designed to feel like 'lost' episodes - and in this endeavor it succeeds well: any who miss Star Trek will want this book!

An OK Collection of Star Trek Stories!.......2006-11-24
It's hard to accept that 40 years have gone by since James T. Kirk and the stalwart crew of the USS ENTERPRISE swept into American consciousness. What a handsome, endearing bunch they were...and what exciting, often uplifting adventures they had! Assembled to promote STAR TREK'S 40th anniversary, this short story collection advertises itself as being "...in (the) grand STAR TREK tradition"(that) "recaptures the magic of the world-renowed television series..." Sorry folks, I don't agree.
I gave this anthology three stars for several reasons. First, I wouldn't rate any of these stories as page-turners. Most are workmanlike efforts but none captured the spirit of excitement or wonder generated by the televised episodes as in "BOLDLY going where no man has gone before." Obviously different readers have different tastes but none of these stories had me going "wow, what happens next!?!"
Secondly, very few of these stories captured the lightning in the bottle -the nuances of the Kirk-Spock-McCoy relationship - correctly. By that I mean, getting so in tune with those characters that the reader thinks "gosh, that's just how McCoy would say it and how Kirk would respond" and so on. 'Fracture' and 'The Leader' come closest but the rest read like generic science fiction tales where you could change all the names of the characters, ship names, etc. and still have a perfectly acceptable science fiction yarn.
Having said all that, I don't doubt devoted Trekkers, perhaps trying to savor once again the excitement and wonder and good feeling of the original series, will buy this book no matter what the reviewers say. That's why I bought it but no such luck.
Some great stories with the original Star Trek heroes.......2006-11-05
2006 is the 40th anniversary of the entire Star Trek phenomenon. Much like the last couple of years, which have had anniversary anthologies for various Trek franchises, Pocket Books has now published one for the Original Series. Once again, editor Marco Palmieri has chosen from the stable of current Trek writers as well as some up-and-comers to put together a very nifty group of stories that holds your interest throughout. While some are certainly weaker than others, I can honestly say there isn't a bad story in the bunch. All of the stories take place during the original five-year mission, and few of them are "sequels" to episodes, trying to explain a discrepancy, or anything like that. I found that refreshing, actually, with continuity references kept to a minimum.
Probably the best story in the bunch is the last one (except for the TokyoPop Manga story that ends the book, but that story is actually a promo for the comic anthology) is "Make-Believe" by Allyn Gibson. It's about what Star Trek is to us regular people, not a story about Kirk & Spock. A young boy, whose father has been killed in Iraq, has lost himself in the fantasy world of Star Trek, even going so far as to throw a fit when his teachers try to take away his action figures. Something is going on inside his mind, something that his harried mother, who doesn't understand neither her son's nor his father's interesting in all this sci-fi stuff, can't quite figure out. When she finally does, though, maybe both of them will begin to heal and be able to live again. This is almost a warning story, in a way, telling us not to lie to our kids when we don't know what's going to happen. It can have great and horrible effects if you're not around afterward to discuss it. Gibson does a great job with this one, and it definitely brought a tear to my eye. One political statement (though understandable, considering it's uttered by the mother) seemed out of place in the rest of story about emotions, but that's the only thing that came close to marring this beautiful story.
Another wonderful story is also near the back. "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" by Jeffrey Lang. This story is an outright comedy, and it's a pretty funny one too. The Enterprise is near the end of the five-year mission, and it's starting to get really stuffy, no matter how good the air filtration is. McCoy's beginning to go stir-crazy, wondering what he will do once the mission's over. But first, Kirk convinces him to accompany Scotty to a conference while the Enterprise goes to investigate something, and their trip back to the Enterprise is priceless. They find themselves on Deneb (the home to the Denebian Slime Devil) where a local shady character tries to ingratiate himself with a disgraced Klingon by capturing the legendary "Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock." With alcohol flowing everywhere, you know chaos is going to erupt, especially when the mistaken identities become known. This story was enjoyable from beginning to end, and while the local thugs aren't that interesting, the rest of the story easily makes up for them. I loved the conversations between McCoy and Scotty about what's going to happen when the ship returns, and the Klingon is just priceless. You won't be able to help grinning.
Most of the other stories are also quite good, though they all have either a minor problem or just aren't as good as these two. However, there were a couple weaker ones. "Chaotic Response" by Stuart Moore is probably the weakest of the bunch. Spock has been the victim of a Klingon Mind Sifter, and his thoughts are in chaos. He keeps flashing back to his childhood but can't seem to bring himself out of the coma that he's in. However, the Klingons who had kidnapped him in the first place are still buzzing around, and the Enterprise is heavily damaged. McCoy enters Spock's mind to try and draw him out, and then, when Spock reacts badly to it and almost dies, both Kirk and McCoy do it. Will they save Spock in time to help the ship before the Klingons destroy them? While I loved the "logic game" that Spock played in his childhood, the rest of the story didn't do much for me. It was fairly standard "Klingons are the evil bad guys, and we have to do something before they destroy us" storytelling, and I didn't find the exploration of Vulcan logic within Spock's mind to be that interesting. The characterization was fine and the storytelling was ok, but it didn't hook me at all.
The book begins with an interesting introduction by David Gerrold (writer of the episode "The Trouble with Tribbles") where he talks about the history of the show a little bit, the effect it's had on popular culture as well as scientific advancements (who could have foreseen how much like communicators some of our current mobile phones look?). He also mentions each story in the book and tells what the main theme of each story is. While I did find this list intriguing, it would have been nice to leave that determination to the reader. Even so, it's a nice way to start the book, and it's the beginning of a wonderful anthology that any fan of Trek fiction (especially the Original Series) needs to pick up.
A Poor Anniversary Present.......2006-10-28
This collection begins with an intro by David Gerrold, one of the writers for the original show, reminding us of what it stood for. It gave me very high expectations for this anthology, which the stories could not match. The first story is about reasons for breaking the Prime Directive. It is a good but not great story. The second story is about Sulu's first landing party command. It is mechanistic and there is very little feeling in the writing. In the third story, Chekov and McCoy visit Iraq, and are of course shocked by the behaviour of the soldiers. Technically, it is set on a different planet, but other than changing guns for phasers, the author made almost no changes in describing an American army unit. You can't simply slap a delta symbol and a red shirt on an American G.I. and call him Starfleet Security, the behaviour patterns and mindset are too different. It is not a Trek story. Plus it is just not a good story. To top things off, this was written by Howard Weinstein. I was certain that he, of all these authors, would have written an enjoyable story, and instead I get this.
The fourth story is a considerable improvement. It is that Star Trek standard, the crew caught between two feuding parties until they can figure out enough to bring the two sides to the negotiating table. I love this type of story. Plus, there is some great sense of wonder stuff too. It's a little metaphysical for me, but is very well written. However, this story was for me marred by the gratuitous inclusion of another "American Empire" Starfleet officer, commanding the station the Enterprise visits. There is no reason to include such an attitude in the story. The fifth story is a genuinely good story. The ship's in trouble, Spock's in trouble, and McCoy and Kirk have to save both. The next story is Christopher Bennett's. The idea is interesting, but this guy just has no subtlety. Everything is right in your face, with no depth. The next story isn't much better, too short and too simplistic.
Then comes Dave Galanter's The Leader, starting an end run of five good stories. The Leader is probably the best writing of the whole collection, and leads all categories except most entertaining and most moving. The next story features Scotty and Sulu sharing command of the Enterprise. It is the story with the coolest sense of wonder features, and is a very good story overall. The tenth story is a bit of a look into Spock's past, and the specific circumstances that led him into Starfleet. It is also a story about how people change, for better or worse. It is a quite good but not great story. The eleventh story is Jeffrey Lang's, of Immortal Coil fame. It's the humour story, and he does a wonderful job. The final story is one of the most moving Trek stories I have read.
The Original Series is, to me, a setting about hope and idealism and exploration. I would not recommend this book to fans of the Original Series. This is a very dark depiction of the Federation. The post-Dominion War setting is dark, moody and introspective, and much more appropriate for these stories. So much for the intention to celebrate 40 years of Star Trek.
To the defense of "Constellations.".......2006-10-20
I am afraid that I have to come to the defense of "Constellations." It is a very good book with very good stories in it ( my favorites were "Fracture," "As Others See Us," "See No Evil," and "Devices and Desires" - though I felt that "Make-Believe" was rather heavy-handed). There is not a bad story in the bunch (and I am glad that the writers didn't crossover any references, characters, etc., with any of the other STAR TREK series. This is pure TOS).
I am eager for other compilations such as this to come out in the future for the readers of the STAR TREK universe.

Beautiful banners.......2007-01-09
I was delighted with the ideas in this book. Especially the graphs and instructions for use. We will definitely be using this book in our Parish.
Inspiring!.......2003-07-02
When I realized my calling was to be a church decorator this was the first book I bought on making banners. I have loved using it. The pictures are very clear and inspirational. I have used ideas for Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, Green Season and baptism. The church has been delighted with the results and very supportive, saying how warm thy have made the church feel. I used only the pictures in the book and not the instructions when I made my banners, so they are not copies. For example, on the Easter banner I did not use all the symbols around the edges, only the three crosses at the bottom. While I did tie/die my fabric for Easter, on the others, as the green time and Palm Sunday, I did not as was suggested, but found fabric I liked. The green time, on page 84, gave the feeling of God's beautiful earth, and I will probably add removable appliques as the season progresses to give changes over the long period of Kingdomtide, as it progresses from summer into fall. I used sequined fabrics and metallics on many of the banners. My designs for Pentecost and baptism were my own, only following the idea the book gave. I also appreciated the written meaning given for each banner, and always write something for the bulletin about the banner I present, including the meaning of the season and the symbolism used in design and color. I like the design to speak on its own, no words. I also do not want it to look like one anyone could purchase from a bookstore. I am always on the lookout for more books like this one, but so far it is the best.
GHASTLY !!.......2002-04-05
Oh, what a waste of my money! Only a few of the pictures of banners was worth looking at. The rest looked like 1960's tie-dyed, psychedelic, drug-altered drawings. The altar frontal pictured on p. 84 is something that shouldn't even be in a church. Sorry I bought it.

Have you tried the lower-carbohydrate, "insulin-conscious" diets and been bored by the menus and recipes you've found? So was Dr. Deborah Friedson Chud, who decided to remedy the situation by writing her own recipe book. The book is organized into protein dishes and carbohydrate dishes. Protein dishes include a variety of innovative fish and shellfish recipes, such as Crab Bundles with Avocado-Ginger Sauce, Clams in Black Bean Sauce, and Smoked Shrimp "Fajitas" (wrapped in lettuce leaves instead of tortillas). Poultry dishes include Chicken Kebobs with Spicy Lime Sauce, Chinese Brined and Grilled Ducks, and Smoked Turkey Tenderloins with Raspberry-Chipotle Sauce. Meat dishes include Pork Tenderloin with Plum Sauce (made from scratch with oranges and plums), Porcini-Laced Veal Roast, and even five recipes for ostrich. If you're a meat lover, you'll salivate at the artful photographs. The carbohydrate recipes emphasize high-fiber vegetables, legumes, and fruits--no sucrose, potatoes, flour, or grains. A chapter titled "Condiments and Flavor Enhancers" includes recipes for a number of flavorful smoked and roasted vegetables. Each recipe includes a nutritional analysis.
Book Description
Following the runaway success of bestsellers The Zone, Sugar Busters, and Protein Power comes Dr. Deborah Friedson Chud's The Gourmet Prescription. The first "insulin-conscious" cookbook to develop sophisticated lower carbohydrate dishes with culinary appeal foremost in mind, this amply photographed book features such enticing recipes as Grilled Shrimp with Red Pepper-Caper Sauce; Chickpea, Fennel, and Red Pepper Salad; and Fresh Figs with Virtual Mascarpone. Chud marries her unique kitchen techniques, original "high-flavor, low-glycemic" condiments, and savory recipes from a variety of international cuisines to achieve a perfect blend of gourmet eating and good health. This ground-breaking contemporary cuisine provides a life-sustaining way of eating for today's tastes and lifestyles.
Customer Reviews:
Good food, but not quite my style........2005-04-18
There are three main point I want to make in regards to this book:
1- The food in this book is definitely of a higher caliber than most "Low Carb" cookbooks. Ms. Chud knows her way around the kitchen, and is familiar with some of the more exotic ingredients available. I have tried a few recipes, and been suitably impressed.
2- That being said, the main influence on her cooking seems to be latin/hispanic/Central-South American. While she seems to do a good job with the fusion cuisine aspect, I am not terribly fond of the flavors used in latin cuisine. She does use some Asian flavors, but her main influence seems to be latin. She presents some excellent ideas, and if you're a cook that can take an idea and run with it, or someone who enjoys latin flavors, by all means, this is the book for you. However, I prefer more of an asian flavor to my food... For that reason alone, this book sits on the shelf most of the time.
3- As far as LC cooking, this food is definitely of a higher caliber, but the "low" part of the "low carb" statement is questionable in some of these recipes. The use of beans, fruits and fructose make some of these dishes "special occassion" dishes, although still *lower* carb than most.
Overall a good book, hence the 4 star review. But I recommend, as with any cookbook, to read the recipes with a grain of salt, so to speak.
Best of the low-carb cookbooks.......2003-11-15
I've tried many (most?) of the low-carb cookbooks, and returned almost all of them, either because the recipes were stupid (who needs a recipe for an omelette?) or because they weren't Zoneable -- unlike Atkins, the Zone doesn't allow massive amounts of fat but does allow a small amount of unfavorable carbs per meal.
The book I like best -- and use a lot -- is Deborah Chud's "The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets." It sometimes feels a bit stiff for everyday use (I wish she would have some more family-style recipes, even though I'm not a mom; I just don't need restaurant-style meals every night) and many of her recipes use her own recipes for 'condiments and flavor enhancers' as ingredients. She also has a strong bent toward Chinese-inspired flavors, whereas my own tastes run to mediterranean, latin, and southeast asian.
But, even given all those caveats, I think this book is the best of the bunch: nice photos, pleasing graphic design, well-documented recipes. I hope she comes up with a second volume of casual recipes with a broader ethnic slant.
Make sure you like smoked foods..........2003-03-04
First - I love this book. The recipies and advice are definitely very good. I've prepared many of the dishes in here, and have always been pleased.
I just wanted to point out one thing about this book though... I recommended it to a friend who wasn't nearly as happy as I was because they dislike smoked foods. The majority of recipies in this book call for some sort of smoked ingredient. In fact, you'll need to get a stovetop smoker to really utilize this cookbook. I personally think that the smoked foods are great, and a stovetop smoker is quite inexpensive (and one of the best additions to my kitchen in a long time) - but I do realize they are not for everyone.
So - if you like the smoked food flavor, and you cook low-carb - this is a great book. If you're not a fan of that smoky taste, keep on looking.
Forget low carb or not...dig in to these recipes.......2002-07-11
I own a hundred gourmet cookbooks. I am pretty close to a pro level cook. And I wanted to investigate low-carb diets, but not give up my highfalutin habit. So this book was very promising, but of course I was very skeptical. (I had been cooking through "Jean-Georges" just before I started this diet, not that that made me fat, it didn't, but it raised the bar a bit on what I expect from a plate.)
Anyway let's cut to the chase. These are some of the best recipes I've ever made, because she uses the smoker (which I ran out and bought) and she also knows how to do all sorts of other great things.
I really couldn't care less whether these recipes are healthy or not. I'm staying on my diet for a few weeks and going back to gourmet cooking when I reach my goal weight. However I will continue cooking through this book for a long time. Lots of stuff to learn. And my meals will be popular with the ladies as well.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could..........2002-06-27
This is hands down my favorite cookbook of all time. I can't recommend it highly enough.
I don't follow a strict low-carb diet, but I do try to limit how much bread/pasta/rice I eat, and this book is something I refer to again and again. Even if I wasn't watching my carbs, the recipes are tasty and interesting and I wouldn't hesitate to serve them at dinner parties to folks who were not watching their diets (in fact, I have done so with raves from my guests). My beef with most low-carb cookbooks is that the recipes are often loaded with fat and dairy products (cottage cheese makes me want to hurl), but not this one. It's not entirely free of dairy products, but they are used appropriately (e.g. buttermilk in ranch dressing) without going overboard. While certainly not fat-phobic, the recipes do use trimmed lean cuts of meat (beef or pork tenderloin, chicken breast, turkey, etc...) and encourage the use of lower-fat condiments when appropriate.
The pictures will make you drool--they are gorgeous. The recipes here range in difficulty from quick and easy to sophisticaed gourmet cuisine of the caliber that you would find in the finest restaurants--but they are all innovative--no run-of-the-mill food here. Personally, I think there's a good balance of easy and difficult recipes here. It's fairly easy to cook some of these ahead; for example: the recipe for plum sauce freezes well, so it's easy to make up a batch, portion it out and freeze it, so when dinner comes all you have to do it pop a pork tenderloin in the oven and defrost the sauce while you assemble one or two of the carbohydrate side dishes. The author gives storage recommendations for such recipes (length of time the sauce/dressing will keep if refrigerated or frozen), which is handy (most cookbooks I own don't give such information).
The book is divided into protein and carbohydrate sections, making it easy to create balanced meals. My favorite protein dishes are the Moroccan Chicken Thighs, roast chicken with rosemary-garlic rub, Pork Tenderloin with Plum sauce, chicken skewers with almond dipping sauce (like Malaysian satay but even tastier) and turkey patties with apples and smoked leeks, although every other one I've made has been excellent as well. The carbohydrate dishes include lots of interesting salads (the black bean salad w/ avocado is fantastic), vegetable sautes and roasted vegetables (I made the roasted asparagus with garlic oil the other night and it was amazing!). Desserts are fruit-based and hit the spot when you want something sweet after a good meal without blowing your healthy eating plan (figs with "virtual" marscapone cheese... YUM!).
Some of the recipes call for smoked vegetables, but not having a stovetop smoker I use roasted vegetables instead with great results. With the focus being on gourmet cuisine there are also a few recipes that call for ingredients that might seem exotic, however any moderately experienced cook can make substitutions with no problem, and your run-of-the-mill grocery store/supermarket will have enough to make probably 80-90% of the recipes as-is. (although I do admit, it's difficult to find ostrich, but I've substituted sirloin or beef tenderloin and the recipes come out great). The Internet can also be a good resource for hard-to-find spices or condiments as well.
I am an avid cook, and what I like most about this book is that it inspires me to be creative in cooking lower carbohydrate cuisine even when I'm not using it directly. I've modified some of the recipes and created several of my own after studying the techniques and flavor combinations presented here. It's made me a better cook. My only problem with the book is that the recipes are so good it's difficult to stick with a sensible portion size :-)
I hope Dr. Chud comes out with another book!!!

Book Description
“Bring outdoor items indoors to create Instant art.”—Philadelphia Inquirer
These 80 innovative and tasteful projects all use natural materials that you can gather yourself, and because each leaf, branch, or vine is unique, your creations will be truly one-of-a-kind. Start by showing off your finds in a relatively natural state: arrange lovely stones in a bowl, or place pussy willows in buckets by the fireplace. Then, make these elements more functional by turning twigs into placemats or leaves into curtain tiebacks. Collect greenery and artfully arrange it into a wreath to hang on the wall. Apply seasonal ideas—from a leaf gift tag to a twig and mini-light chandelier—to brighten up the holiday and the days that follow.

Book Description
Nature presents us with an endless array of memorable shapes, textures, and colors. On one day, a vibrant autumn leaf may catch your eye, while the next afternoon, you'll revel in the feel of a smooth river rock. These 80 innovative and tasteful projects all use natural materials that you can gather yourself-and because each leaf, branch, or vine is unique, your creations will truly be one-of-a-kind. Start by showing off your finds in a relatively unaltered state: arrange lovely stones in a bowl or place pussy willows in buckets by the fireplace. Then, make these elements more functional, by turning twigs into placemats or leaves into curtain tiebacks. Collect greenery and artfully arrange it into a wreath to hang on the wall. And seasonal ideas-from a leaf gift tag to a twig and mini-light chandelier--will brighten up the holidays...and the days that follow!
Customer Reviews:
nice photos.......2003-05-17
Great pictures, and the projects look fun to do. Some are more realistic than others. The tea-light holders weren't as easy as it looks, but still fun. If your house is earthy, these projects will fit in. A lot of the other projects were for people with serious time on their hands, but we've got to have goals...

Beautifully written.......2000-11-07
For the lover of American song and its interpreters, this superb volume is well worth hunting out. Balliett writes in a wonderfully poetic style that fully encapsulates the style and sound of each artist. The range of singers he explores is superb - those who love the art of cabaret will relish his stunning chapters on Mabel Mercer, Bobby Short, Julie Wilson; he also devotes space to such fine interpreters as Carol Sloane, Teddi King and Margaret Whiting. Balliett includes conversations with the singers alongside his own unique analysis and commentary. All in all, a completely indispensable book, the finest exploration of the art of singer popular song available.
