Book Description
From dross to gold, an enchanting tale of love is spun. Goethe, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, Tolstoy, Einstein... all praised the writings of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799), a mathematician, physicist and astronomer by profession, and an aphorist and satirist on the sly. In Lichtenberg and the Little Flower Girl, novelist Gert Hofmann weaves a wondrous fictionalized tale of Lichtenberg's real-life romance with "the model of beauty and sweetness," Maria Stechard, a flower seller he meets one day near his laboratory in Göttingen.
"The greater part of what I commit to paper is untrue, and the best of it is fiction!" exclaims Lichtenberg, our hunchbacked hero. His daily life of "wrestling with death," of electricity machines and exploding gases is plunged into new passion the day he encounters the little Stechard girl: "Something is found that was lost for a long time." Soon he teaches her to read and write, she helps him keep house... and then?
Colored with Lichtenberg's humorous, enlightening meditations on life, death, and everything in-between, Hofmann works a subtle magic in this unusual fable-of-awakening about the transience of human attachments and the resilience of the human spirit.
Customer Reviews:
For those who don't measure historical novels by the pound........2004-07-02
Written in 1993 but just recently translated into English by the author's son, this final novel by Gert Hofmann reflects his background as a playwright and radio scriptwriter. Dialogue, along with the main character's inner thoughts, constitutes virtually the entire novel. Stripped-to-the-bone and lacking the descriptive paragraphs one would expect in an historical novel set in late eighteenth century Gottingen, the narrative is told in a simple style and in short sentences reminiscent of fables and children's stories. The humor and the observations about life, however, are decidedly adult, and the insights into the strange life of Georg Lichtenberg, a real mathematician-astronomer-physicist, give a broad picture of scientific investigations and social life in Germany during the period.
A hunchback, who can not leave his house without being pestered by people who want to touch his hump "for good luck," Lichtenberg is something of a dandy, affecting silver buttons and multicolored wigs. Always fascinated by new observations, especially his own, he carries a "waste book," in which he records his passing thoughts and dozens of aphorisms: "If a man has webbed fingers, he is unlikely to make a great flautist." On one of his walks, he buys flowers from a beautiful thirteen-year-old child, Maria Dorothea Stechard, who eventually moves in with him, becoming his student, then his housekeeper, and finally his mistress. Keeping "the little Stechardess" hidden from his friends for many years, he shares his scientific experiments on electricity, hot air ballooning, and phrenology with her, feeling "doubly near" her when he can share both his love and his science.
Reminiscent in some ways of Penelope Fitzgerald's The Blue Flower, this slim novel is far less descriptive, a story reduced to its absolute essentials with not an extra word. Understated in the extreme, it is a peculiar story of seduction, often witty and often discomforting, giving a unique view of late eighteenth century academic, intellectual, and social life. Book Description
It just wasn't fair! Captain Pausert had foiled the deadliest of space pirates and eliminated the threat of the Worm World, yet his troubles kept piling up. Sent on a secret mission to stop the nanite plague, a self-aware disease that could devastate whole worlds, he quickly found that someone had convinced the Imperial Fleet that he was actually a wanted criminal, which led to a battle leaving his ship in urgent need of repairs. And while Goth and the Leewit, two of the notorious witches of Karres, could do amazing things, ship repair was not in their line. So he stopped at the next planet for repairs, but found that somehow his bank account had been cut off, and the authorities were looking for someone matching his description. There was only one thing to do-join the circus! An interstellar traveling circus, that is. All the galaxy loves a clown-as long as Pausert, Goth and the Leewit can keep their disguises from slipping. The show must go on-or the galaxy is doomed!

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
More hijinks with the Captain and his little passengers with their super abilities. He is developing some of his own, hence the wizard title. This helps them out a few times.
Some theatre company sendups, some bad nanotechnology problems, and a bit of accidentally being thrown into the past, to boot.
Not Even Close.......2007-08-11
No-one would call "The Witches of Karres" a great novel, but it was a true delight, a book I have re-read and enjoyed numerous times since I first stumbled across the original novelette in the early sixties. Sadly, the things that made it such a delight - the clever writing, the not-at-all-subtle social commentary, the humor ranging from deadpan to virtual slapstick - are absent from this sequel.
One of the earlier, more easily pleased reviewers stated that "some people live to find fault," which may be true but is irrelevant here. I am glad for his sake that he enjoyed it, but if you find this book a satisfactory follow-up to the original, I can only conclude that you missed most of what I loved and enjoyed about "Witches."
Wonderful--when's the next book due?.......2007-08-07
I happened upon this follow-up of The Witches of Karres (a book I've read and re-read many, many times over the years - in fact I had to replace my original copy which was falling apart) and was delighted with the continuation of the story. No, it isn't perfect, but it's awfully close!
The sweet, tongue-in-cheek humor is wonderful, and it's great to see the little witches growing up. How about including Maleen in the next one?
So, my next question is, when can we expect the next book? I can hardly wait to learn what comes next. Please, please, please, authors, get busy writing (if you haven't already) and get the next book in print!
Shakespeare, circuses, and carnies! Not Pausert, Goth, and the Leewitt!.......2007-07-30
This was supposed to be a sequel to the "Witches of Karres," James H Schmitz's 1966 space opera (nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1967). It is one of a few books I reread annually; it is a true delight. So like many, I slogged through 464 pages of a clearly unhealthy preoccupation by the joint authorship in Shakespeare, circuses, and carnies! It seemed at times that they had only read the last five pages of the novel and then the CliffsNotes for the rest! I was sorely disappointed. I like Eric Flint's work and thought he might have pulled it off, but clearly he wasn't the lead author (well hopefully he wasn't).
It might have been wise of the authors before pen hit the paper to look at JHS's back ground: representative for International Harvester in Germany and escape of Hitler's rise to power, aerial photographer in the Pacific during the war, mechanical entrepreneur building car trailers after, then SF writer. Schmitz was the model for Captain Pausert! He was writing about himself! Captain Pausert fiddling with Klatha machinery was a reflection of JHS's interest in gadgetry... Examples of politicians waffling (the Daal of Uldune) or using political influence and corruption for financial gain (Councilor Onswud of Nikkeldepain) would have been well in JHS experiences in his business dealings in Hitler rising Germany. None of this was in the least explored in the "Wizard" sequel... ! Schmitz's Space Opera was instead turned into a Soap Opera of ruminated feelings and weak minded heroes.
People are pretty good at seeing continuity and consistency in behavior. The captain Pausert of "Witches" isn't the Captain Pasert of "Wizard", nor is Goth for that matter. I am a fan of JHS and love the "Witches of Karres." I like many wanted to see a sequel and bought the "Wizard of Karres" hardback as soon as it was released and broke the pages before I left the bookstore. I had confidence in Eric Flint, but truthfully had a bit of apprehension about a jointly authored book.
As I read the first chapter, my apprehensions became klatha predictions... the book was substandard as if the writers really didn't care if it reflected the "Witches" characters! I read it through with the faintest of hope for last page redeption and then prayed the last lines were:
The intercom clicked on and the Captain was startled awake from a strange dream full of circuses and Shake... something or the other. Goth was calling out with such snorts that he leaped from the couch where he'd been napping and banged his knee painfully on the way the ships console.
"Captain," Goth's voice told him, "better get down here!" She was choking with laughter.
"What's happening?" the captain asked, relaxing a little.
"Having a little trouble with a baby vatch... oh, my! Better come handle it!" The intercom went off.
"Well," the captain muttered, heading hurriedly across the outer room towards the passage, "here we go again!"
Sadly they weren't... As a sequel it is a failure and even as a stand alone potboiler it is mediocre. There is not much more to say... Sigh!
Reads like bad fanfic.......2006-12-24
In the first few pages, the authors decide to tackle some "mysteries" Schmitz had left behind - and if I had had any sense that they had resolved them with what the original author had intended, I might have been pleasantly surprised. But their "answers" are completely out-of-kilter with the tone of the original book that I felt cheated. And this tone deafness seems to pervade the book. If you really enjoyed, "The Witches of Karres" - stay away from this purported sequel.

Tossup Between 4 and 5 Stars.......2000-07-05
Anthony Heald does a nice job in reading the Omnibus. His voice (and the special effects) are crisp and clear. Heald is good at characterizing the voices so that each character is distinct and easily recognizeable. Anderson's books are great although at times difficult to follow (and a bit spread out over the place), but still enjoyable. I liked/disliked...the jury is still out...the idea of having the Jedi Academy where it is, but it seems to work and is well woven into the story structure. The author is very true to the characters from the movie(s). Run time is 540 minutes. Well worth the purchase price.
Good Idea for Story, but lacking in creativity and ending.......1999-07-18
Kevin J. Anderson found a nice idea for a story but his writing at times is droll and not very exciting. Also, i thought Admiral Daala was kinda cliche and i didn't like her much at all. Gantoris and Kyp were both great characters but I don't think Luke was portrayed very well. For the most part the story was exciting-but as all stories Anderson seems to write-he doesn't know how to end the book. The ending is dumb and i could've written a better one. I would rate Kevin as the 4th best SW writer, probably. If you want to read a good series read the X-wing series written by Michael A. Stackpole and then read Tim Zahn. They are both great even if i like Stackpole a little better.
This book has the best villian in all the Star Wars books........1998-04-07
Admiral Daala was terrific! She has as much evil malice as you can get without being dorky. She deserved much more than four Star Destroyers, the rank of admiral, a totaly wimpy captain for her flagship, totaly wimpy scientists that are expected to build and a superweapon that works,(okay one of them did,) and one dead supporter. She wouldn't have even gotten that if her boyfriend hadn't been a Grand Moff. Kyp Durron, (IDIOT ALERT), didn't deserve to get the superweapon either. He should have been the one to get fried by the Dark Side, not Gantoris, who, unlike Mr. Jedi Master,( DOUBLE IDIOT ALERT), used some imagination while building his lightsaber.
The whole book is a page turner, from beginning to end!.......1997-12-22
This trilogy is probably the best one out there! I had a hard time putting it down at night, so I ended up reading until 1 or 2 in the morning! If you're looking for some great reading material, get this book and the two that follow it!
A BARGAIN!.......1997-07-09
Jedi Search, Dark Apprentice, Champions of the Force. These cassettes are much cheaper than 2 of these stories, let alone 3. Please refer to the original titles for summaries

A very good review. . ........2005-01-25
. . .to counter some of the silliness out there (Jenkins and LaHaye) about the End Times.
Fr. William Kurz, SJ, is a noted Catholic New Testament scholar who trained at Yale University and has taught for decades at Marquette University. In this volume, created not for the scholar, but rather for the "Catholic in the Pew", he traces what the Church has REALLY taught about "Last Things", beginning NOT with Revelation -- but rather with Genesis!
Throughout, Fr. Kurz expresses a keen grasp of Scripture and biblical interpretation and shows the historically minded Christian the facts of the matter -- rather than fundamentalist hysteria.
A well-done book which I have recommended to others.

Polish the silver, set out the best china, light the candles.......2002-07-12
It's Christmas...all through this book. I "borrowed" this book a couple of years ago and finally returned it, but only after buying my own copy!
Southern Living puts out the best cookbooks. The recipes are tried and true, easy to follow and, always, delicious.
In Santa's Bakeshop you'll find Fresh Lemon Muffins, Gumdrop Wreath Bread, and Herb Buttered Crescents. My family loves Cheesy Pretzel Rolls, which fast became a classic when I first found the recipe.
The Cream-filled Chocolate Cake on page 64 became a staple for birthdays in our house, so it gets a workout more than once a year.
Chapter titles are as festive as the season: Merry Munchies, Visions of Sugarplums, Elfin Delights (full of treats for the children like Santa Claus Cupcakes), Frosty Fixings and Making a List, to name a few.
Although there are appetizers and some sandwiches (like Peanut Butter Candy Cane sandwiches for the kids), the emphasis here is on sweets -- drinks, cookies, cakes, breads and candies -- so don't buy this one if you're looking for entrees or vegetable dishes.
The book is gorgeous. Illustrations are Christmasy and colorful photographs that are as appetizing as the recipes. As usual, with a Southern Living Cookbook you can't go wrong.

Making Life Easy using Southern Living Cookbooks.......2001-02-02
I made a fantistic discovery when a co-workers loaned me her copy of "Christmas with Southern Living Cookbook," Volume 3, 1999 Ed. Within 1 week, I had tried out four recipes with marvelous results. The shopping lists were most helpful. My family was elated that I prepared what they called "Sunday Dinners" during the week. I found using the recipes to be a "no-fail" task, very easy to follow and produced "fine dining."

If There Were a Ten Star Rating.............2002-03-27
If there were a ten star rating, I would give it to this book! If only all of our Presidents were so committed to the values of home and garden.
This is a wonderful book, both for Jefferson fans and gardeners. Since I'm both, it is doubly wonderful. You can read Jefferson's records of what he planted when, his observations about all sorts of garden topics, his letters to friends and family about gardening, and see the voluminous records he kept about all things horticultural.
Forget About Other Organic Gardening Books!.......2000-10-16
Forget About Other Organic Gardening Books! This collection of books and writings by Thomas Jefferson includes decades of his farm records and gardening notes from back when they didn't even have chemical fertilizers, herbiscides, and insecticides yet. He experimented with a huge variety of fruits, vegetables, and fiber plants (including hemp) that he imported from all over the world. He also kept complete ledgers of his slaves, chronicling their births and deaths. He kept records of their production and consumption of linen, wool, blankets, clothing, etcetera. This book is a gold mine of history, gardening tips, livestock records, diary tidbits, photos, diagrams and more.

Book Description
Thomas Jefferson was one of the most remarkable men ever to have crossed America's political stage. The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello reveals more than 150 of the objects Jefferson acquired, reflecting not only Jefferson the statesman but also Jefferson the architect, amateur scientist, connoisseur, and historian.
The articles range from invaluable historical treasures such as the lap desk on which the Declaration of Independence was composed and Gilbert Stuart's portraits of Jefferson to the Mandan buffalo robe that was part of his collection of Native American artifacts and the silk damask-upholstered chairs he purchased in Paris. In all, it is a collection that mirrors both the mind of America's greatest statesman and the tastes and styles of a time in history when the American people secured their own independence and offered the world an example of a free people in a democratic state.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough and Excellent!.......1998-10-13
If you are interested in Thomas Jefferson or Monticello, this is a terrific book. Over 150 of Jefferson's personal possessions are photographed and documented with detailed explanations and provenance of the items. Covered are varied objects such as works of art, china, portraits, scientific instruments, natural history specimens, and personal objects. This book really illustrates how varied Jefferson's interests were. A very fascinating book!
Book Description
This final volume provides an all-encompassing account of Jefferson's accomplishments, friendships, and family difficulties in his last seventeen years, revealing his shift from the realm of politics to his roles as family man, architect, and educational enthusiast. Describing Jefferson's retirement from Washington, this volume recounts the events that formed Jefferson's final years, particularly the founding of the Library of Congress and the University of Virginia, in which he played a major role.
Customer Reviews:
Malone saved the best for last.......2007-07-26
This book is the sixth and final volume in Dumas Malone's six volume biography called "Jefferson and His Time" covering the period from the end of Jefferson's presidency to his death (1809-1826)
Mr. Malone truly saved the best for last in this series resulting in the best of the six volumes, quite an achievement considering he completed this volume when he was 89 years old. This volume successfuly covers in thorough detail the most important parts of Jefferson's late life including the founding of the University of Virginia, his friendship with John Adams, his thoughts on the political issues after his presidency, and his personal and family life including his increasingly difficult situation regarding his debts. While maintaining the scholarly level of detail in the previous volumes, Malone's writing style is his most enjoyable yet.
In conclusion, this volume has my highest recommendation and is perfectly suited to be read as a stand alone volume, even without reading the the rest of the series.
DUMAS MALONE DID A BETTER JOB HERE.......2003-01-29
Despite his clear sympathy for the late 'sage', Dumas Malone did a better job on this book, when compared to his efforts on "Jefferson and the Rights of Man".
This book, ("The Sage of Monticello"), centered on the ex-president's life after retiring to his grand plantation. It is a well-written account, although that I disagreed with the author on certain issues.
Yes, I may seem stubborn, but I will always like to be conscientious: I refuse to agree that a man who was a slave-holder was at the same time, the champion who fought for the rights of men. It is simply contradictory!
The last of the wine.......2002-12-25
What can be said about this monument to Jefferson scholarship? I am sure that somewhere in universities around the United States there are "scholar squirrels who want to put down this invaluable resource in Jefferson studies. It is always the way that mice attempt to gnaw at lions. This is not a perfect work (and my remarks refer to all of the books in the series as a whole), there are somethings, namely Sally Hemmings references which are wrong and will not sit well with American 21st century mores. There is the issue of slavery which was handled much differently 50 years ago than it is now.
Jefferson is not worthy of our interest because of Sally Hemmings and because he kept slaves. Jefferson is great because of the Declaration of Independence and his fight for the rights of man. While it may have been hypocritical to preach liberty and keep slaves, it is doubtful that slavery ever would have been abolished if Jefferson had never gained the prominence that he did. This book and the others that follow show why we should continue to honor the public man even though his private side may have been wanting.
Jefferson and His Time: The Sage of Monticello.......2002-04-19
Jefferson and His Time: The Sage of Monticello is the crowning jewel of this sixth out of six volume set. This Pulitzer Prize winning series about Thomas Jefferson took the author (Dumas Malone) a lifetime to write, as he started it in 1943 and finished it in 1981.
This volume takes us from the end of Jefferson's second term as President to his death. But these times are Jefferson's best in terms of his satisfaction with his immediate family, even though at times were a bit rocky, Jefferson longed of retirement from public life. Long ago friendship of John Adams was rekindled with frequent correspondence... James Madison not living too far away from Jefferson was a frequent correspondent.
Jefferson's talent wasn't wasted as he worked on the establishment and founding of the University of Virginia. He proved himself as one of the preeminent force for public education. But, Jefferson's personal debt played a role in Jefferson's energy and dreams.
We really get to see Jefferson as a man in this volume and his works for the public good emerge here. Also, we see Jefferson's health deminish and his battle for life play a part. This volume is masterfully engaging and well written. Impeccable scholarship and a life long dedication are very apparent.
If you like to read history and biographical history in particular and want to read about Thomas Jefferson, this series has to be on your short list.
I highly recommend reading this series. It has been an honor reading about one of America's most extraordinary men.
This biography is a classic and it reads like a dream........2000-08-21
If you love Jefferson, biography, American history, good writing in fat books and if you have world enough and time, this monumental six volume biography is calling you. Jefferson has taken his knocks recently and deservedly so, but while this is stronly sympathetic to the sage, it is not uncritical nor a whitewash. While Jefferson has earned his detractors, he deserves his admirers too, and in Malone he has found a worthy and eloquent celebrant of his genius. John Adams was right: Jefferson still lives and nowhere as happily as in this biography.

African Celebrities.......2007-01-14
I was interested to hear that this book has been updated and reproduced. My grandfather Mr A.J. Ocansey, was one of the sponsors of the original book. I first saw a copy of the original book which belonged to the daughter of Dr Bruce who I believe was also one of the sponsors!I am very happy to get a copy of this book.It contains the sort of information which has been lost and of which the modern generation of West Africans are unaware.
It has a lot of information for people researching their family history.
