    Book Description

Lucretius’ On the Nature of Things, one of the glories of Latin literature, provides a vivid poetic exposition of the doctrines of the Greek atomist, Epicurus. The poem played a crucial role in the reinvention of science in the seventeenth century, its influence on the French Enlightenment was powerful and pervasive, and it became a major battlefield in the wars of religion with science in nineteenth-century England. But in the twentieth century, despite its vital contributions to modern thought and civilisation, it has been largely neglected by common readers and scientists alike.

This book offers an extensive description of the poem, with special emphasis on its cheerful version of materialism and on its attempt to devise an ethical system that suits such a universe. It surveys major relevant texts from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (Dryden, Diderot, Voltaire, Tennyson, Santayana) and speculates on why Lucretius and the ancient scientific tradition he championed became marginalised in the twentieth century. It closes with a discussion of what value the poem has for students of science and technology in the new century: what advice it has to offer us about how to go about reinventing our machines and our morality.

    Book Description

Fifteen years ago, a young author surprised and enchanted readers with his first novel-the story of Fritti Tailchaser, a courageous tom cat in a world of whiskery heroes and villains, of feline gods and strange, furless creatures called M'an.

The book was Tailchaser's Song, the author was Tad Williams.

    The legend was born.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cat fantasy novels out there.......2007-08-21

It's so hard to find good cat fantasy these days. Some rare writers either hit the true cat nature head on, or like most of them, are far off of the mark. True, they depict the cat's most common nature which is curiosity, but never tells us why cats are so dang lazy-looking, and seem to give everyone and everything a long, calculating stare. This book fails in that department as well, but so far, it's one of the best cat fantasies I've read, so I suppose it's a step in the right direction.

Don't get me wrong. `Tailchaser's song' is a good book for an animal fantasy, especially one on cats. The star of the book is Fritti Tailchaser, who goes off into the unknown to find his abducted friend Hushpad. Along his travels, he partners up with young Pouncequick and an old, insane cat named Eatbugs.

The one thing that separated `Tailchaser's Song' from the rest is the cat culture, which, to my opinion, was wonderfully done. Cats have their own terms, pronounce words differently, and have three different names that they can attain in their lifetime (though only two are actually known). They have their own folklore, their own Gods, and plenty of action and ripe storytelling is told throughout. It is wise to read up on the intro page at the beginning of the tale that talks about the Goddess Meerclar Allmother. Three cats will be very important in the story.

The only negative aspect I have of this story is not the plot twist at the end, but rather, with some of the characters themselves. Fritti Tailchaser will remind you of Frodo in `Lord of the Rings' because every so often, when something climatic happens, he faints. He faints maybe four or five times throughout the whole book. Perhaps it was the author's way of transition to one scene after another. Even so, it's a weak one.

The part where Eatbugs reveals himself to be something else other than an insane, old, filthy cat was also weak. Not to spoil it or anything, but if you detest ex machina plot twists, you might not make it through the end, since this book has about three of them.

It's a good book, one of the best cat fantasy stories I've read so far. It is highly recommended, even if you are not a cat person. Dogs are mentioned and kinda put on the negative basis of the story, but it's not as bad as 'The Wild Road'. For you cat lovers out there, here's your book.

4 out of 5 stars Tailchaser's Song: An Epic Tail.......2007-05-21

I first came across this book in high school and as a dreamer, free-spirit, and cat lover- this novel fit the bill for my girlhood imagination. It's full of fantasy, cat lore, sci-fi, and even though the ending could be interpreted as being a bit dramatic, in turn it is eerie and frightening. This stalwart cat journeys far and wide for his friend and encounters so many regions of his catfolk and beyond that he comes back a stronger kitty and a changed heart. Although the idea is intended for kids, adults would enjoy it and I've got two copies waiting for my own kids when they are ready to hear such a fun tale. This book has stuck with me over the years and I'm a devoted fan.

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Look Into the Feline Mind.......2007-02-18

I recieved this book many years ago as a gift. I was unimpressed when I read the cover. It seemed rather silly. I figured it would be just another cloned fantasy novel. However, this book more than exceeded my expectations. Mr. Williams has done an excellent job deciphering the feline mind in all of its graceful, affectionate, and aloof glory. The idea of cats having mythology, rituals, clans, and supernatural enemies is very conducive to the peculiarities of the feline mind. Also, this is an intriguing fantasy read. I have read it several times, and I catch something new with each read. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Fun Book.......2006-11-11

I picked up Tailchasre's Song not expecting it to capture my interest, although I am a cat-lover. I was between Warriors Books. When I started reading it, it was amazing to me how much it was like the Warriors, which I LOVE. I'm not finished with it yet but I will be soon. It's so hard to put it down.
Tailchaser and young Pouncequick set off on a journey to find Tailchaser's fela(girl cat)friend, Hushpad. Along the way they meet Roofshadow who is also missing some friends. They suspect strange "cats" with red claws (as Pouncequick put it).
Roofshadfow's family and friends were attacked by them yet there were also some cats missing.
Roofshadow, Tailchaser and Pouncequick set off into the unknown to try to find their missing friends.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect book.......2006-06-30

this is tolkein for cat lovers. this book is exciting, touching, fun. words can't begin to describe the pleasure this book gave me, i read it as a child and continue to love it as an adult.run out and get this for yourself but buy extra copies because you'll want everyone you know to step into this world.

Barney Panofsky smokes too many cigars, drinks too much whiskey, and is obsessed with two things: the Montreal Canadiens hockey team and his ex-wife Miriam. An acquaintance from his youthful years in Paris, Terry McIver, is about to publish his autobiography. In its pages he accuses Barney of an assortment of sins, including murder. It's time, Barney decides, to present the world with his own version of events. Barney's Version is his memoir, a rambling, digressive rant, full of revisions and factual errors (corrected in footnotes written by his son) and enough insults for everyone, particularly vegetarians and Quebec separatists.

But Barney does get around to telling his life story, a desperately funny but sad series of bungled relationships. His first wife, an artist and poet, commits suicide and becomes--à la Sylvia Plath--a feminist icon, and Barney is widely reviled for goading her toward death, if not actually murdering her. He marries the second Mrs. Panofsky, whom he calls a "Jewish-Canadian Princess," as an antidote to the first; it turns out to be a horrible mistake. The third, "Miriam, my heart's desire," is quite possibly his soul mate, but Barney botches this one, too. It's painful to watch him ruin everything, and even more painful to bear witness to his deteriorating memory. The mystery at the heart of Barney's story--did he or did he not kill his friend Boogie?--provides enough forward momentum to propel the reader through endless digressions, all three wives, and every one of Barney's nearly heartbreaking episodes of forgetfulness. Barney's Version, winner of Canada's 1997 Giller Prize, is Richler's 10th novel, and a dense, energetic, and ultimately poignant read. --R. Ellis

          Book Description

Ebullient and perverse, thrice married, Barney Panofsky has always clung to two cherished beliefs: life is absurd and nobody truly ever understands anybody else. But when his sworn enemy publicly states that Barney is a wife abuser, an intellectual fraud and probably a murderer, he is driven to write his own memoirs. Charged with comic energy and a wicked disregard for any pieties whatsoever, Barney's Version is a brilliant portrait of a man whom Mordecai Richler has made uniquely memorable for all time. It is also an unforgettable love story, a story about family and the riches of friendship.

          5 out of 5 stars Well-deserving of praise.......2005-08-21

`The portrayal of Barney, pen overflowing with years of accumulated weaknesses, shortcomings and flaws, is weighted by the manfs sincere fondness for what was, was lost, and still remains in his world. His words are often offensive, but his actions and failures are so very human that itfs hard to begrudge an old man crippled by actions he cannot undo.

Barney's politics are less threatening than is the fleeting sense of self that slips from the pages as Barney unsuccessfully clings to his` memories. His gruff, critical voice in the present is contrasted by the delicate manner with which he describes events that occurred in the past, making apparent their fragile existence and his urgency to record them on paper.

This book came highly recommended but took me a while to get into because I tried to read it in short intervals over a long period of time, a method the format of the book doesn't lend itself to at all. There are a multitude of characters and events that take place` over a broad span of time, and it's best (like with most novels) to get a good feel for the characters before putting the book down after that first reading.

It was quite frustrating to pick it up again after some time had passed and immediately feel lost in the many distinct, though interrelated stories, being told nearly simultaneously. Yet even that mood was appropriate for the workfs subject material. After all, Barneyfs Version was written as a memoir written by a man in the`` process of losing his very memories.

Richler creates an incredibly complete world: endearing despite malcontented and despondent overtones. Itfs full of regret coupled with hope and a deep sense of attachment to everything that has ever made itself a part of Barneyfs life. Barneyfs Version is funny, sad, and beautifully written. I wish I had read it sooner and plan to read it again.`

          3 out of 5 stars Barney's Gripes.......2005-08-16

The main character in this abbridged CD version of Barney's Version is an irritating alcholic who does nothing but click his glass to let the listener know he is drinking yet another scotch,(or whatever),coughs his phlemy cough and feels sorry for himself. What is the point of this book other than a character study of a sad sack guy who drives everyone he loves away from him (including the reader) and then obesses over the loss of wife # three whom he really loved? OH yes, and his guilt re: the guy that drowned after drinking too much with his drinking buddy, because he (Barney) didn't stop him

5 out of 5 stars Life takes a whole lot of living.......2005-02-13

I have been a long time fan of Richler and have read most of his books. This one was delightfully funny, serious, thought provoking, meandering, sarcastic, observant, and in many a review of life for the past 50 years of a person who lived life to the fullest ,mainly in Montreal, but also flavoured with Paris,London,New York and Toronto.Having lived in Montreal throughout the 60's,after just finishing university, all the places mentioned brought back fond memories.I also enjoyed many wonderful times at the cottage in the Laurentians and experienced the changes that took place with the emergence of separatism.I remember many interviews that Richler gave and it was very clear that he felt that racism was running wild and because he loved Montreal and everything about Quebec so much,it made him very angry. This book is as much a story of Richler's life as that of Barney.A reader who did not know Montreal in those days, may not appreciate how real life and places mentioned in the book really are.I spent many hours in places mentioned but was not familiar with Dink's on Crescent St.That may be another name for a place that Richler frequented in the same area.
References to hockey and particularly the Canadiens or as we more commonly called them 'The Habs'is right on.That was when hockey was the heart and soul of sport fans in Montreal.I followed it just like Barney and Richler did, and attended many games in the Forum. For anyone who was interested ,it was easy to meet the players, either socially or accidentally.Several played in softball leagues in the off season and one would sometimes pass by them walking along Ste Catherine's St.or in restaurants, particularly Ben's.With what has happened to hockey;I don't bother with it any more.As I'm writing this the final negotiations are underway to try to salvage a bit of the 2004/2005 Season-but at this point -who really cares?
Richler had an utter contempt for what was taking place in Montreal, for instance,on page 145 ,when asked by Solange,"but why shouldn't we have our own country?' he replied,"Because it would destroy mine.Your ancestors were stupid. They should have sold Quebec and kept Louisiana."

The 60's in Montreal were wonderful times, full of excitement, and on its way to becoming one of the best cities in the world. The politics of division changed all that ,and Barney laments the great exodos of so many to Toronto and other places.I was one of those and felt the sadness of being in a place where I wasn't wanted.Life is too short for that nonsense.
A lot of people write Richler off as a sarcastic character, but I find he is one of Canada's best writers .He portrays Montreal as well as Caldwell and Faulkner does the South or as Steinbeck and Twain did California and Missouri.
That's not to say he felt that Toronto was so great."Self-satisfied Toronto is not a city I've ever warmed to.""On a walk on Avenue Road with Miriam they came upon a small park and thought they would stop for a rest, but the gate was padlocked, and a sign screwed into the railing read:

          NO EATING
          NO DRINKING
          NO MUSIC
          NO DOGS
"Squeezing Miriam's hand,I said,"SometimesI think what inspires this city, its very mainspring,is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy."
Richler is gone now,and we miss him. However, we still have his books to enjoy.

My only regret was it took me so long to get around to reading what I feel is one of his best books.Boy,what a movie this would make.Maybe this would be a good project for what Richler calls "mediocrity's holy trinity" on page 83.

          5 out of 5 stars idiots.......2003-12-30

yeah you guys are right...this wasn't very good. Wait, actually it's PHENOMENAL! What kind of comment is that, "he's not very likeable but I guess you can get something out of this book..."???!!! Yeah, it only won the Giller Prize. This is one of my favourite books, a page turner but filled with heart, fascinating, and hilarious all in one. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. Idiots.

5 out of 5 stars A dark comedy for today.......2003-12-05

Richler is in top form here. This, next to Solomon Gursky was Here is his best novel to date, and certainly his most relevant. He pokes and prods every group out there, jews, women, quebecois, candians, N. Americans, video store workers....everyone! Mordecai has immense fun with the world of the politically correct, and the petit Canadian Intellectual. It is a great end to a brilliant career and showed that Richler never lost it. All of his novels are about himself and his world, that's obvious, but what is great about it is that his is never pointlessly condescending, or overtly egotistical. This great writer displays the same dissatisfactions with the world that we all have. Obviously being a great writer doesn't make you feel any better about life (T.S. Elliot and Celine, amongst others, have said as much), it just helps you to articulate those dissatisfactions a little better. Most importantly this book is a riot. Certainly understanding candian history and culture is a help but no, it is not necessary. Incidentally the cigar on the cover isn't what Barney smokes, that is what Richler smoked.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer delight from Zenna Henderson.......2000-04-28

Readers who love Zenna Henderson's Pigrimage will want to read this, her second novel about the People, a race from another planet who become marooned on earth. The People have the very best of human qualities: love, gentleness, spirituality; and also special powers of healing, levitation and other abilites.

This book tells the story of a couple, Mark and Meris, who, one stormy night, find a young girl who has fallen in a capsule from the sky, and who has special abilities. Maris and Mark, still grieving the loss of their own baby, must come to terms with the emotional issues that caring for the young girl, Lala, creates in both of them. What follows is a plot that will involve the reader in the magic, compassion and sense of rightness that the People evoke.

In Pilgrimage, as in The People: No Different Flesh, the plot shifts between the present day story, and stories about the People from their past, which comprise the People's race memory. Included as one of these memories told to Mark and Meris is a short story, "Deluge", which has appeared in some short story collections. "Deluge" gives the reader a taste of the magical and deeply fulfilling way of life on the People's home planet and tells how the People came to leave it. Other memories tell us what happened to various individuals of the People as they arrived on earth. These add texture and interest to the present-day story, and include events of terrible persecution of the People as well as stories of personal tragedy and joy.

Some critics have found Zenna Henderson and her People books too emotionally melodramatic, and indeed, Henderson does have the talent for making vivid emotion come alive on the page. The ending of this book has a fairytale-like happiness that may bring tears to many readers' eyes, although some critics consider Henderson to be too saccharine. To my mind, Henderson's novels, with their emotional brand of spirituality, are uplifting and warming without being cloying. Henderson shows us that there is still comfort and genuine goodness in the world. Reading The People: No Different Flesh is like drinking a warm cup of cocoa in front of a fire on a cold winter's night. END

                                  Book Description

In Awake My Soul, editor James Martin, S.J., offers a meaningful collection of fascinating essays focusing on devotions and their place in the life of contemporary believers. Originally published as part of a Lenten series in America magazine, the essays discuss a favorite devotion, its history, its place in an individualís life, and its role in the life of contemporary Catholics.

Some of todayís top Catholic writers celebrate many traditional Catholic devotions such as the rosary, the stations of the cross, holy water, novenas, relics, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and more. Contributors include Ron Hansen; Emilie Griffin; Joan Chittister, O.S.B.; and Eric Stoltz. Awake My Soul introduces the practice of devotions to a new generation, and shows how the tradition of prayer can help people regain a sense of the mystery at the center of the Catholic faith.

Again, a wonderful work of James Martin, SJ. This collection of essays - which, I believe, originally appeared in America Magazine - written by a variety of men, women, religious and lay is very inspirational and educational. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars I Will Awake the Dawn.......2006-01-24

Reading "Awake My Soul" is like stepping into the sunshine on the first morning of spring when the smell of new grass fills the air. Father Martin appropriately took the title of this marvelous little book from the opening verses of Psalm 108. Reading it IS an experience of awakening, because the essays bring a fresh perspective to spiritual practices which have enabled Catholics for centuries to experience spiritual intimacy. Unfortunately, in the wake of Vatican II, the meaning behind many of these had been lost as religious leaders sought to make the Faith more relevant to contemporary church goers. Rediscovering their history and the meaning they hold to those who practice them today makes them new again.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I'm a Catholic, but knew about only a few of these things--like the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross. But I learned so much not just about the history and the traditions behind these devotions (and others--my favorite essay was on what the tradition of the saints means) but also on the ways that the individual writers find personal meaning in these ways of prayer. My favorite essay was by Christopher Ruddy, a young Catholic theologian, who talked about the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a way of pondering the way that Jesus loved. I really liked that. This is a fantastic book for Catholics interested in learning (and refreshing) an old tradition, that will speak to them today. It would be a great book for almost any Catholic, I think

I didn't know much about Catholic devotions, but this book really helped me to understand things like the rosary, and the saints and relics, etc. It's a great collection of beautiful essays by wonderful writers, and I would recommend it highly. I really liked the essay by Lawrence Cunningham on the saints, in particular. It would be great for book reading groups, too.

Simply Shrimp, Salmon, and (Fish) Steaks reveals how easy it can be to turn the catch of the day into a flavorful, satisfying, and healthful meal.

Leslie Glover Pendleton begins with helpful hints for selecting the very best fish and shellfish, and goes on to offer a delicious range of dishes that can be made using America's favorite seafood: shrimp, salmon, swordfish, halibut, and tuna. Pendleton builds on familiar ingredients and simple techniqus (no filleting or scaling here), but the results are such spectacular creations as Orange-Glazed Shrimp with Gingered Cucumber Salsa, Roasted Swordfish Cuban-style, and Crisp Salmon on Lentils with Fried Onions. Most of these incredibly tasty dishes can be made in less than thirty minutes, making it easier than ever to add fish to your culinary repertoire. Pendleton completes Simply Shrimp with more than thirty appealing accompaniments to the fish to create a full meal. Each and every recipe is flawlessly written, giving even the most inexperienced cooks confidence to prepare perfect seafood and side dishes with minimal time and effort.

So rejoice, because the bounty of the sea can now become the bounty of your table. Cooking fish at home has never been easier -- or more delicious.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and Different.......2001-02-10

I love cookbooks, and try a lot of recipes. The recipes in this book are wonderful. They're easy, varied, and use a wide selection of produce, which is important to my family. We eat no meat but fish, and no dairy. I often get dismayed that so many cookbooks base recipe after recipe on these "forbidden" ingredients, but few of the dishes in this book rely on dairy; those that include some cheese are perfectly delicious without it, such as the Salmon Cobb Salad.

Ms. Pendleton has created many dishes which are healthy and out of the ordinary. She has a real flair for giving meals an ethnic flare, for instance Asian or Mediterranean, yet they are unique, not cliched. And they are not elaborate or difficult, yet have a very gourmet result, especially for how easy they are.

This is a very different cookbook; you will not find it redundant to your collection, even if you have dozens of other cookbooks. I highly recommend it, especially if you're trying to eat healthy. You will not have a boring diet with this book to give you ideas!

I am always looking for good, simple to prepare fish recipes. Simply Shrimp, Salmon, and (Fish) Steaks, fits the bill perfectly. The text is well written, the recipes are easy to follow, and the menu suggestions helpful. A creative use of ingredients gives these recipes distinct flavor. Dinner guests have been pleased with the results so far. I particularly enjoyed the salmon baked with apricots and water chestnuts and the swordfish (I used halibut instead) with onions, raisins, and pine nuts. I will eat a lot more fish because of this fine book.

I recently bought this book and love it!

I am an avid quilter, but had never taken on upholstry. This book made it very easy to custom make slipcovers. This is great for anyone from a novice sewer to an experienced one. I highly recommend it.

                                          Book Description

In this volume the author examines the origins of Arabic linguistics on the basis of the earliest Qurcanic commentaries (1st half of the 8th century A.D.). The material used includes both edited texts and manuscript commentaries. Various chapters analyze the exegetical methods of the early commentators (such as Muqatil and Muhammad al-Kalbi) and their use of grammatical terminology. These data are compared with the earliest grammatical treatises (Such as Sabawayhi and Farrac). The material presented here constitutes an important source of evidence for the development of linguistic thinking in Islam and the origin of the grammatical schools of Basra and Kufa.

havent read all of it yet; but ive read her, the authors first book which is pretty accurate; my uncle was an amazing, dynamic and brilliant innovator in many fields; not only in theatre which he dedicated his life to; but sensitive to all people; because of him homeless people are being given food now; progams he started when he was alive; my whole family have the papp blood; myself as a teacher, linguist, dancer, singer, etc; sister artist;;;this was given to us by my grandfather an immigrant from poland who loved music, yiddish theatre, was an actor, comedian,;;etc. may my uncle, Joseph Papp who has given my mother, and family, never be forgetten; looking forward to getting the book and will follow with unbiased critique

The story of Joe Papp is the story of a precious stage ofAmerican theater history -- an intensely productive period forAmerican playwrights and New York theater -- and as such, this book is satisfying. The author is a Papp fan, so it's to her credit that this reader found Papp complex and industrious, but not terribly likable or insightful about the theatrical art or craft. As a visionary, his successes are a matter of record -- though no one would want producers to emulate his thoughtless, irresponsible, "raging bull" approach to developing the artistic and financial security of an organization. Yet the man was a force of nature, and his interaction with his community -- documented here in detail -- is of genuine historical interest.
