Book Description

Men Giving Money, Women Yelling is Alice Mattisons latest collection in which the characters lives are told in tales that overlap or echo one another. At the center of the stories is Denny Ring, a young man nobody quite knows. Other characters include John Corey, a contractor who renovates old houses in New Haven, Connecticut; his younger brother Eugene, a volunteer at a soup kitchen; and his older brother Cameron, who is a lawyer specializing in obnoxious law. Johns assistant, Tom, is in love with his former English teacher, Ida Feldman, and Charlotte LoPresti, a social worker who interviews the Corey brothers and their aged father, is friends with Pam Shepherd, a social worker whos in charge of the house for psychiatric patients that John and Tom are renovating.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-05-12

The best of dozens of short story collections I have read in recent years. The subtitle "Intersecting Stories" doesn't do justice to the work as a whole. I would call it a novel, many (though not all) of whose chapters could stand alone as stories. Works as a whole -- an important work of fiction by a superb writer.

4 out of 5 stars Absorbing and well-crafted stories.......2000-10-13

The characters in "Men Giving Money, Women Yelling" live in New Haven, Connecticut, site of Yale University, but the college is a supporting character in this set of interconnecting stories. The characters are students and teachers, carpenters and business people and as we progress from story to story we begin to see their lives are all more or less connected. Like the movie "Magnolia" part of the fun of reading these stories is trying to figure out how everyone is related to the other characters. One central figure in all their lives is Denny Ring, a charming but disturbed drug addict. He is one of the "men giving money" of the title, and many of the "women yelling" are yelling in response to his manipulations. As is the case with a lot of short story collections, some of these tales work better than others. Mattison's attempts to depict racial tensions in the area are a little too overt, but her writing shines when showing the outrageous attractiveness of Denny, a dangerous and ultimately doomed protagonist. She is also adept at drawing all the disperate stories together, culminating in a concluding story that is wonderfully satisfying.

What a gem of a collection!! I was completely engaged in this group of short stories about the very interesting and yet ordinary people of this CT town. I think what is so lacking in writing these days is the description and action of normal people. There is a unity in everyday activities that the correct author can make poetic. Ms. Mattison describes how people are and can be in real life. I loved this compilation!

4 out of 5 stars Thank God for Book Reviews.......1998-08-08

Thank God for book reviews! If I hadn't read a NY Times review of Alice Mattison's MEN GIVING MONEY, WOMEN YELLING, it is unlikely I would ever have discovered this engaging collection of interconnected stories. The characters appear to be leading ordinary lives but Mattison's insights are definately extraordinary. Beginning each new story, the reader is aware that the previous characters will appear in some way in the forthcoming stories, making the collection a delightful puzzle.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Stories Indeed.......1998-04-12

This collection of short stories should satisfy the voyeur in all of us. Each story features a select group of characters from the book's over all story line and provides us with a new perspective to each scene. Ms. Mattison has done a wonderful job of demonstrating how chance, circumstance, and conscious decision cause our lives and situations to overlap or intermingle. As the stories intersect and the characters surprisingly reappear we discover how each person sees each of the others and views the events.

What we never really learn is how each character actually feels about themselves or one another. Even in the first person narratives they seem to lack their own distinct voices. And although New Haven is described as the locale we never are given a real sense of place. These stories could occur in most any city in the USA.

Overall this is very interesting and entertaining collection of short stories describing how many of see society and 'remember' our real lives!

5 out of 5 stars Wow. Just... Wow. .......2007-04-30

Grant Morrison is my hero now. Wanna know why?

He ripped off Borges, turning an idea into a real story, then introduced (literally) some of the most mixed up superheroes I've ever seen, and kept it coherent and, better, funny. And that's just the first four issues.

That's amazing.

I can't say enough good things about this comic, probably making this a largely unhelpful review. But if it helps, I can't say enough good things about very many things.

I've now read the next two volumes, and can't wait to get volumes four and five.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-02-27

I remember looking forward with eager anticipation to the next issue each month and wondering what new literary weirdness Grant had for us. DC really needs to get on the ball and release the rest of the series. I was so upset when Grant left the book after issue 63, the next writer tried to be weird and different but it was horrible. I still have all the original issues and pull them out to re-read from time to time.

4 out of 5 stars Still missing a page or two.......2007-01-14

I love Grant Morrison's run on the Doom Patrol and think this is overall a great collection. This version contains the one page introductions of the characters who would become the first Brotherhood of Dada (whose story is told in Volume 2). However, it is still missing Holly-Sleepwalk's one or two page introduction. It's not essential by any means, but I was very disappointed, because I thought all the missing pages were going to be in this one.

4 out of 5 stars What they said.......2006-06-17

Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol is wonderful, and these trade books are great, but the stories in this particular one are not up to par with some of the better stuff in the others. I would still recommend it though.

3 out of 5 stars For the Doom Enthusiast.......2005-08-29

Picked this book up as my first collection of Doom Patrol and, frankly, I was lost. A book for those that have kept up with the series but not for a beginner. Art was also dated and lacked luster. Might try another book by Grant in the future. :(

I can't begin to say enough good things about Moebius, except that he makes his drawings look as natural and easy as breathing. Moebius gained popularity from stories he did for the French magazine Metal Hurlant, which beget the American Heavy Metal. The Man from the Ciguri is the continuation of his most popular book, The Airtight Garage. Primarily a space opera--with a mix of humor, psychedelia, and sex that only Moebius can deliver--this story deals with Major Grubert lost on an alternative earth, desperately trying to find his way home while his friends on the space ship Ciguri search for him.

3 out of 5 stars Good recipes, poor editing.......2002-05-14

I've made several of the recipes in this book and all were very good. However, the book is poorly edited and instructions are not always clear. For example, the tofu cheese cake recipe does not specify what temperature to set the oven to. And you really do need a spring-form cake pan for it to turn out properly. The Key Lime Pie recipe was very confusing and I had to throw out the first batch of filling I made. I am not an expert cook but can generally follow recipes without any trouble. Chef Sato should have added a little more explanation and double-checked the recipes to be sure all the vital information was there. Buy this book only if you have time to remake the recipe if it doesn't turn out or are an experienced cook who can read between the lines and figure out what needs to be done.

I am fairly new to the vegan lifestyle, and and it was wonderful to find a cookbook with such delicious and easy to make sweets. My non-vegan family even loved them. Perhaps I'll convert them one dessert at a time! The only critism I have is that some of the cooking times stated are quite long so really watch out that you don't burn whatever you're cooking.

    Book Description

The styles of the telephones are often overlooked for their functionality. Everyone has one. But here, in text and over 250 color photographs, a history of the design of the telephone is presented from Art Deco years to novelty phones of the 1980s. Once the upright "candlestick" telephone was replaced by a desk set "cradle" telephone, its designs became diverse and important in a competitive industry. In this new book, the largest telephone companies are discussed, including Western Electric, Automatic Electric, Stromberg-Carlson, Kellogg, and North Electric. Major sections are devoted to European telephones and novelty phones. Memories will be awakened as you page through the book to see the phones you grew up with. Old telephones are appearing in antiques and collectors' shops throughout America, becoming one of the hottest new finds for collecting or just as accent pieces. This book will let you know what grandmother's phone is worth and so much more. A price guide is included.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars correction to other reader's review.......2007-01-27

There are two separate phone companies: "Northern Electric" phones were made in Canada and were part of the Bell System, while "North Electric Mfg Co" was an independent company located in Galion, Ohio. The book would correctly identify these two separate phone manufacturers.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-08-18

This was my first telephone collecting book and it's very disappointing to me, although the pictures are pretty.

Firstly, it only covers phones from the 20's on up, thus leaving out the great old wood and candlestick phone eras almost entirely. There's also almost no history or chronology of the phone's invention or development, during this period, other than a reference to industrial design.

Secondly, it's laid out in an arbitrary way, with examples of phones and short little captions which are hard to link to their correct photo, and with not much sense of how one phone followed another in production history. Occasionally, when showing the more rare phones, it's helpful, but only because of the picture, not the written part.

Thirdly, the author states on one page that a phone was made by "North Electric", which astonished me, since the company, as most people who deal with phones would know, was called "Northern Electric". (I guess maybe she was more interested in West Electric phones.)To me, that's a bad mistake.

Fourthly, the price guide seems flimsy and quickly put together with wide price ranges.

The bottom line is, if you like factual, condensed, categorized, quick-reference type books, this is not for you. This is not your field guide to old phones, by any means.

4 out of 5 stars good, but not the discussion of design implied by the title.......1998-10-22

Although the pictures are lovely, and this book helped me identify a few of my phones, it does not include much discussion of the evolution of telephone style/design. There are pictures of some phones that are not mentioned in the text at all, and phones mentioned but not illustrated. It is a decent beginner's book, but does not go into the detail I wanted.

        Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
