Book Description

From acclaimed New York Times bestselling fantasists Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman comes the spellbinding conclusion to the epic adventure of wonder, courage, magic, and ambition that is the breathtaking world of the Sovereign Stone.

Over two hundred years have passed since the mystical Sovereign Stone was shattered and the world of Loerem faced its most dangerous test ever—the rise of the dark lord Dagnarus. But now Dagnarus has stirred from the Void and seeks the utter conquest of all Loerem. Leading a seemingly unstoppable horde of bestial, powerful minions and a host of insidious undead, Dagnarus captures mortal kingdom after mortal kingdom, until he stands before the very gates of New Vinnengael, as traitors within the city plot to yield the crown to the undead lord.

In the darkness and turmoil that follows, all heroes must first master their own fears and weaknesses before they can take up the fight to stop Dagnarus, and the company spreads across many lands to face many perils. Mortally wounded by a Blood-knife wielded by an undead Vrykyl knight, the Baron Shadamehr lies dying, and even the many skills of his beautiful, beloved Alise may not be able to save him. Others face desperate journeys through hostile lands and difficult tests of character. And, unsuspected, a deadly Vrykyl stalks the pecwae Bashae—and his precious burden, the human portion of the Sovereign Stone—through the streets of New Vinnengael.

Yet the gods have their own plans for this imperiled land, and drawn by an unknown call, the Dominion Lords head for the Portal of the Gods, the mystical, haunted site of Dagnarus's terrible treachery two hundred years beforehand. For if all the parts of the sundered Sovereign Stone can be reunited, the Dominion Lords can stop Dagnarus's unholy plans for domination. But one piece is still missing. . . .

As the past and present converge in a desperate race to determine the future, an unlikely hero will arise. A man who will become far more than he ever dreamed possible and who holds the fate of all Loerem in his hands. And to save Loerem he must venture into a realm of utter terror and darkness . . . into the very blackness of the Void itself.

4 out of 5 stars Great series, poor ending. Worth buying though........2005-11-15

Poor ending, though the series was excellent... I'd say that it would be normal to be disappointed by the ending. The entire story build up to that very point and it wasn't as earth shaking as the authors would have you guess. However I did think the adventure there was actually worth the price of getting the entire series!

4 out of 5 stars A stunning conclusion to an epic tale.......2005-08-19

This book is the third and final instalment of the Sovereign Stone Trilogy capping another wonderfully created world by Weis and Hickman. Wies and Hickman have a knack for bringing home the story at the end of trilogies. I've read some authors where the third book is the worst in the series. Not the case here. This book finishes up the story in grand fashion and I can honestly say that I wouldn't have ended the story any other way.

This world is unlike their Dragonlance books in that they have complete control over what happens and it's noticably a little darker than their other works.

The story during the Sovereign Stone Trilogy moves along at a break neck pace. There are multiple twists along the way. I thinkt he thing I like best about this trilogy is that the 'villian' starts off as a good guy for the most part, but with misguided ideals. He doesn't really know he's being evil he thinks he's doing what's best.

Overall, if you are a fan of Weis and Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles of Death Gate cycle you should give these books a chance. The world if fresh and different from most that is out there today.

If you're ready for a new journey, jump aboard and get ready for a fun enjoyable ride.

3 out of 5 stars Ashes To Ashes, Dust to Dust, Portal To Portal.......2005-05-19

The conclusion to the Sovereign Stone Trilogy, the predicatively-named Journey Into The Void, follows the path of the sundered stone through Loerem and back to the portal of the gods.
Book three focuses on the abominations called taan and their subservience to the lord of the void Dagnarus and that race's interaction with humans, elves, orken and dwarves. As the level of violence ratchets up, Dagnarus' ambition of ruling the world draws nearer. For 200 years he has plotted the moment when he would fulfill his ambition and walk in the footsteps of his long-departed father King Tamaros. His moment seems assured. Much like its two predecessors, however, Journey Into The Void relies too heavily on simplistic coincidences and twists of fate to be fully convincing. The ending, in particular, seems rudimentary and anti-climatic, although Dagnarus' musings about being a just ruler who will bring prosperity to his subjects are an intriguing contradiction to the linear fable of good versus evil. In the end, the irony is not enough to erase an inadequate ending. A partial redress is left to new and complex characters like Captain Of The Captains, Alise or Baron Shadamehr, but sadly they are stifled in these environs. That will have to do however.
Every rose has its thorns. In this case, the thorns manage to overwhelm the story.

2 out of 5 stars Might as well finish it..........2005-02-14

The most positive excuse I can give for reading this book, is if you've already read the first two, it's not too painful to just go ahead and finish this one too.

That being said, this book read like it was writting to fulfil a contract, with no particular insight or imagination going into the telling of the story. The actual climax was such a letdown as to be almost insulting.

The overall story seems to center around a great cruel joke that the gods play on the people of this world. Giving them a "gift" that they state up front will throw the races into war and chaos. Then three books go by trying to get the stone put back together so the gods will take the damn thing back. Gee, thanks gods.

There was also a very odd juxtaposition of the typical fantasy races. I know it's not written in stone or anything, but the deliberate trashing of traditional racial attributes was very distracting. i.e. Orcs, are an intelligent, if superstitious, seagoing race. Elves are a petty and warlike people. Dwarves are a fanatical horse riding culture. If you're going to mix things up that much, why even start with the same race names. Just make up new ones, it would work far better.

If you didn't start this trilogy, trust me...skip it. If you've already read the first book, stop there, it stands alone anyway. If you read the second, you might as well finish it.

3 out of 5 stars A Decent End to the Sovereign Stone trilogy...........2005-01-04

I am a huge fan of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. But this Soveriegn Stone Trilogy has been at best a so-so fantasy story. Book 1 was more of a prequel, Book 2 seemed to get lost in itself, and Book 3 finally puts it all to rest. This is not their best work. But it did remain interesting throughout. The ending is a bit of a letdown and it seems that any chance of some intense action is dispelled quickly. I would not really recommend this trilogy to a friend when there are simply better fantasy stories to focus on out there. So only read if you read the first two. Then put it on the shelf to gather some dust.

BRAVING THE VOID
Journeys into Healing

Book review
By
Dr. Stephen J. Faulkner
Duncan, B.C.

For physicians and health care workers who are interested in Energy Healing and holistic approaches to health care, this book is a landmark work. Dr. Michael Greenwood's second book "Braving the Void - Journeys into Healing" is a well written, easy to read account of his experiences and insights as a physician and acupuncturist at the Victoria Pain Clinic.

Physicians in primary care reading this book will immediately resonate with some of his ideas on chronic pain and chronic illness. For example, the discussion of the doctor-patient relationship and the increasing trend of modern medicine to practice by protocols and algorithms using "evidence based" treatments is very relevant.

"To suggest one form of treatment is good for all people in all situations seems patently absurd, yet physicians have allowed fear to provoke them to abandon their inner strength and relinquish their authority when dealing with patients"

The concept of the void, which was initially developed in his first book, "Paradox and Healing", co-authored with Dr. Peter Nunn, is one that is best experienced to be appreciated and understood. Having experienced the void myself in therapeutic situations it is something I believe all holistic physicians and healers must experience and enter into periodically to be fully aware of what is happening both for themselves and their patients. Michael Greenwood has embraced this belief and, together with his other staff members, has developed a model for energy healing for conditions as diverse as chronic back pain and chronic fatigue, to breast cancer and multiple personality disorder. Other areas I found extremely interesting were the case histories on phantom limb pain, electrical burns and shamanic possessions.

Dealing with these "energies" can be extremely fatiguing and at times frightening, and Dr. Greenwood has been very modest about his experiences. He should be considered the James Cook of the human psyche, beginning to chart new continents and oceans of human energy, which have been previously "Terra Incognito" to western minds. His medical training is the navigational equipment required to prevent him landing on the rocks and his skills as a humane physician and acupuncturist the gift that provides safety through the gale-force winds and ocean storms.

This kind of work, dealing with chronic pain and the failures of so many other "so called" orthodox treatments also brings up the shadow work that a healthy society must engage in for its survival. As Michael suggests, our health care system is all too ready to focus on the "light" and "positive" aspects of our culture but reluctant to approach the "dark" or "negative" aspects. This is not the kind of work for the faint-hearted. A willingness to explore one's own shadow side and belief system is essential if one is going to navigate the unpalatable places of the client's psyche. Fortunately for us, there are pioneers like Michael Greenwood who are giving us frameworks to work with such as the void from which we can springboard into the unconscious material that lies stored in the body/mind continuum.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to all health care professionals involved in holistic and energy healing.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Greenwood breaks new ground at the frontier of medicine.......2001-11-14

Braving the void clearly and vividly describes how our memories are not only stored in the brain, but are widely distributed throughout the body. This has important implications for illness, since post-traumatic stress disorders can be deeply stored within this body-mind memory system, and may be expressed as intractable symptoms such as chronic pain. This memory storage system may be viewed as a holographic field or pattern of energy. "Unblocking" the abnormal energy pattern can restore health by releasing the memories. During this process, the patient can enter a space termed the "void", where the abnormal patterns of consciousness are exposed and released.

Dr Greenwood uses various techniques such as acupuncture, forced breathing, kinesiology, and massage to release the memory patterns. He provides fascinating case histories of patients who were suffering from chronic pain, and other manifestations of ill health, being transformed back to wellness through manipulation of the body-mind systemic memory system.

This is an excellent book for healthcare professionals who wish to learn more than they were taught at medical or nursing schools, and for patients with chronic illness and pain secondary to past physical and psychological trauma. I highly recommend it.

          Book Description

Martha Washington -- prisoner, runaway, lunatic, soldier, and now seditionist -- has seen the future. It looks great on paper, but it doesn't work. The U.S. government is controlled by power-hungry nutcases. The ecology is a shambles. Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it . . . nobody, that is, except PAX and the very expensive weather-control satellite, Harmony. In Martha Washington Goes to War, it's Martha vs. PAX and the United States government, and the odds are more even than you might think!

When I stumbled upon this gem of ultra-cynicism, I thought for a moment that John Carpenter had got his hands on the Miller psyche'. Alas, no. What came out of this reading was such a complete skewering of Bigotry that the backwoods, context-skipping, agenda totting me-me-me creationists would practically bend over backwards to either look the other way or assassinate by character with the dreaded PC word. Wasn't this the dreaded semantics of hypocritical supremacy Miller that was cutting against? By the way, since when were names like FEMINAZI ever "PC".
Watch out for the Anti-Martha's who recommend books about Natural Selection( Darwins Black Box ) that they only heard about from other people who heard it misquoted by the ICR, and then try to bring it up in a review of a UBER-COMIC.
Anyway, this work illustrates how Miller's resurrection,( Sorry, no mythical-inference intended) led to the making of 4, count em'4 Batman movies. Now tell me Burton didn't have this kind of egala-mania in mind with "Batman Returns". Just admit it and give credit where it is due. This one will endure.

4 out of 5 stars anti PC COMIC.......2001-05-28

This qulity comic novel which is heavily influenced by Ayn Rand'sATLAS SHRUGGED. Like Rand, Millersees the greatest threat to freedom not in obvious totalitarians but well meaningidealists who are incompetent or paternalistic or both. The fact that the heroes are minorities is irrelevant to the story and only a bigot or a moron would focus on that in discussing this work.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Miller's Vision Comes of Age.......2000-12-13

At last, Frank Miller has given us a comic book for all Americans and a hero who represents the real America. It's strange to think that a medium like action comics, that wastes so much of its energy trying to reinforce the stale values of an America that hasn't existed since the middle of the last century, could be such fertile ground.

It has opened my eyes to the potential of comics to tell stories that have relevance to the modern world, not some lilly-white America that's been dead for decades.

I would have to call this his best, most mature work to date.

          Buy it, or else!

          1 out of 5 stars The Ultra-PC Comic Book.......1999-12-14

If you liked Miller's Dark Knight series, you probably won't like this one. In fact, unless you're into extreme political correctness, you won't like this one.

All the good guys are minorities. All the bad and dumb ones are white. And so on. This seems like an 180-degree reversal from his Batman books, which were somewhat negative on liberal issues (well, justice, at least).

But Miller obviously wanted it to be a work on par with Moore's "Watchmen" - why else waste Gibbon's talent on this book? Perhaps it was a catharsis, because it seems like a lot of venting - against Reagan, against white males, against evil phallic space stations, against ... well, enough said. Read "Watchmen" again instead. Or why waste time with comic books? Although Moore's stuff is always interesting, most comic-book philosophy is at the pop level. Sounds deep and attractively cynical ... until you delve. Read something serious. Recommendations: "Darwin's Black Box" (Behe), "Nature's Destiny" (Denton).

Like most people, I found some of the words used in the Bible to hard to understand. When I got this book, I pulled out my Bible started reading it again. Now I know what a "laver" is, I understand the meaning of the "firmament" and I finally figured out what "mammon" was. This book was really helpful to me.

As Elizabeth Schneider points out in her introduction, the immigrant culture of America is constantly restocking our markets and produce stores with "ethnic" fruits and vegetables that were hitherto unknown to any but the most worldly gourmets. Just as ginger, bean sprouts, and avocados were once strange, exotic substances, so Vidalia onions, fava beans, and passion fruit are becoming more common in stores nationwide.

In this magnificent, encyclopedic cookbook, Schneider discusses each of 80 fruits and vegetables, its origins, history, and appearance, its flavor, uses, and nutritional highlights. She tells how to shop for it and what to look for, how to store it and how long it'll keep, then she provides a selection of recipes (there are 420 in all) to inspire and reward your new culinary quests. Richard Sax's Hot and Sour Soup-Stew is a lovely way to try out Chinese cabbage, Sautéed Fennel with Lemon makes one wonder how one existed so long without it, and Collard Greens with Cornmeal Dumplings and Bacon provide you with the wherewithal to enjoy this ultimate comfort food in your own home, even if you don't hail from down South. Schneider's Commonsense Guide is an irresistible reference. --Stephanie Gold

                      Book Description

Over the past ten years, the number of fruits and vegetables sold in markets nationwide has more than doubled -- as has confusion about how best to prepare them. Elizabeth Schneider to the rescue! "There is no such thing as an inherently 'weird' fruit or vegetable," she states firmly. "What your mother didn't cook, someone else's did."

Schneider makes unfamiliar produce as accessible as carrots and apples. Whether it is newly cultivated in the United States, gathered from the wild, or imported from the tropics, she has studies each edible plant from the ground up and made sure that it arrives at your table in fresh, contemporary fashion.

This encyclopedic cookbook answers questions about nearly one hundred types of recently marketed produce, providing information on nomenclature, availability, selection, storage, preparation, and nutrition. Culinary, botanical, and historical details set the stage for 420 easy-to-follow recipes that capture the essence of each fruit and vegetable.

Recognized as a classic, Uncommon Fruits & Vegetables: A Commonsense Guide was first published in 1986 to a fanfare of outstanding reviews, capped by Time magazine's calling it "the timeliest and most truly helpful book of the year." More useful than ever, this visionary volume includes produce that is now relatively commonplace -- arugula, plantain, kiwi, mango, shiitake, and fennel -- as well as the more elusive passion fruit, lemon grass, carambola, morel, pummelo, and fiddlehead fern.

Uncommon Fruits & Vegetables: A Commonsense Guide remains an indispensable reference and reading pleasure for home cooks and professionals, gardeners, plant lovers, and the food-curious everywhere.

Don't look any further than this author. This is a top-notch resource for learning the details about uncommon fruits and vegetables in the American marketplace. Information is detailed and specific for each vegetable and fruit. A great buy!

I have the original of this book and find myself constantly reviewing it every time I come back from the tropical food markets. This book is very helpful even if one is familiar with and have grown up eating these kinds of fruits and vegetables. This book provides americanized recipes which is good because aside from being nutritious, most of these fruits and vegetables are beautiful and aesthetically presentable. You can serve fruits and vegetables that do not need to be masked by some gumbo-colored sauce. If you are the kind of cook who likes to serve beautiful dishes this book comes handy. You don't even have to follow the recipes just to use the vegetables. Once you become familiar with the vegetables you will discover how compatible they are with the common vegetables found in your regular supermaket on a dish of your own recipe. For example you could prepare a chicken dish with sliced tomatoes, potatoes, red and green bell peppers, carrots and bok choy with thickened chicken broth with your own choice of spices. The book details the following for each fruit and vegetable: Scientific name, description, beautiful illustrations, selection and storage, preparation and nutritional highlights.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but look into buying her brand new book first.......2002-01-02

I have an earlier edition of this book, and have really enjoyed using it. It includes background and the author's commentary on each fruit or vegetable (and, as one of the authors notes, not your "garden variety" fruit and vegetables, but unusual things like kumquats and quince that those of us who grew up on iceberg lettuce may not have encountered.) She also includes a sampling of recipes for each item. The recipes have the author's usual creative flair, and all the ones I have tried have been really great. But, unless I was really more interested in the fruit part of the equation, I would look into buying her new vegetable book first. It was just published in December 2001, and would therefore be more current. There has been so much change in bringing some of the more unusual foods to market that it may make most sense to have Schneider's most recent book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating , informative, and much more than a cookbook!.......2001-11-29

I began to browse through Ms. Schneider's book because I had some unusual fruit on my hands that needed to be cooked. I became ENTHRAWLED by the fascinating information about vegetables and fruit from A to Z, but not our usual apples and oranges varieties. I couldn't put it down. I will be giving this book to everyone I know!

In her book, Sarah King shares her knowledge of fabric surface design, influenced by the fascinating ancient Japanese art of shibori. It is a resist technique in which fabric is manipulated before it is dyed or discharged (bleached) to produce wonderful textural designs for use in quilting, clothing, decorating, or anywhere fabric is found. Three projects, with explicit instructions, introduce the reader to the fascinating world of fabric manipulation and dyeing.

I read this book from start to finish in a couple days it was so absorbing and fascinating. My heart was moved with compassion for this 'deeply disturbed' dancer. A great biography for anyone interested in human sociology and psychology!

5 out of 5 stars The tragic fate of Vaslav Nijinsky.......1998-08-07

More rubbish has been written about Vaslav Nijinsky than about any other dancer. Therefore it is sheer joy to read the biography by Peter Ostwald. He is a professor of psychiatry at the University of California in San Francisco and as such eminently able to analyze this severely troubled dancer. Nijinsky was born in 1890 and was enrolled as a child at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Peters burg. There he excelled in artistic subjects, but did badly in academic ones and behaved so badly that he was threatened with expulsion. As a person who was unaccustomed to sophisticated life he found it very difficult to adjust, furthermore he was by nature a rather shy and retiring young boy when he found himself patronized by people like Prince Pavel Lvov. Then followed his disastrous marriage to a Hungarian heiress and a series of unfortunate events like a fiasco in London, fracas during the first night of his ballet "Le sacre du printemps" and the outbreak of WW1. I! n those days there was not much the doctors could do for mental patients and when Nijinsky died in 1950 he had not been dancing for over thirty years. The tragic fate of this gifted dancer has been documented a number of times, but for the first time by a person who has insight in mental disorders. A handsome volume with interesting illustrations, two appendix of medical character, lavish notes and bibliograhy.
