Customer Reviews:
Great conclusion to the trilogy.......2002-03-05
Mortal Consequences, the third book in the Netheril trilogy, is the best of the trilogy. This book begins with the heroes from the first book in peril and the pace continues throughout the book. Unlike the first two, there are no lull periods.
While the first two were mainly action-oriented, there was little heart-to-heart involvement between the characters. In this one, the main hero, Sunbright, searches for his lost tribe. Even though he was forced from his tribe in the past, he feels it's his destiny to find his tribe and return them to their prior glory. Not only does he find resistance within the tribe, but he and his companion encounter a number of obstacles outside the tribe.
A character from the first book returns, but in a new, more powerful form. After resolving the issues with his tribe, Sunbright has the ultimate showdown with the enemy. While the ending is rather abrupt, it is satisfying. The revelation about his companion is a little "out there", but most readers will probably see it coming. Overall the trilogy is better than average with an excellent conclusion.
An uplifting end to a great series........2001-05-15
IMHO Clayton Emery is one of the best of the Forgotten Realms authors. I always find myself becoming involved with his characters and I cannot wait to read what happens next. While many elements of this book were somewhat predictable, it didn't bother me because I enjoyed the journey so much. The ending of the book is very uplifting and leaves the reader with a good feeling. Of particular interest is how the characters Sunbright and Candlemas evolved and grew over the course of the series. I hope is is working on the follow-up to this series that he aluded to in the epilogue. I also highly recommend Emery's Star of Cursrah.
WOW.......1999-12-20
This was a great book like the rest of Clayton Emery's books. It was fast, fun, and exciting. I recomend that you read the first two before you read this one.
WOW!.......1999-12-19
This was an amazing book like the rest of Clayton Emerys books. This is a realy good book but you should read the other two befor this.
Book Description
The three volumes that comprise this compelling saga begin with In the Hall of the Dragon King, and follow the fortunes of Quentin, who as a young temple acolyte, seeks to overthrow the evil loosed by Necromancer Nimrood and to save Mensandor, the realm of the Dragon King. In the second volume, The Warlords of Nin, Quentin once again holds the king’s destiny in his hands as the Wolf Star grows greater and the power of the Nin increases, spreading its black terror. In The Sword and the Flame, the final volume, Quentin reigns as Dragon King and faces an insidious attack of evil—from within himself—when Nimrood holds his son hostage.

A good, solid series of Lawhead's early writing........2004-11-16
I don't think I can add much beyond the in-depth review below, except to say that when I read the series some time ago, it captured my imagination enough for me to rate it a solid "I like it" #4 on the scale. I thought some of the spiritual concepts were a bit understated for a Christian Fantasy, but many prefer that. An event that I particularly remember was the search for the precious metal to fashion the sword, and also the sword's creation. The sword and its use in one certain battle still comes to memory. I wouldn't overlook this series if you are a Fantasy fan. It's worth the read.
Save your time, save your money, save your dignity.......2004-01-16
It could be said in this trilogy's defense that this work was intended as mere pulp fantasy, intended to be read by readers looking for the familiar fix of a plot written by the numbers. However, to do so would be an insult to pulp authors everywhere. Lawhead entirely fails to create believeable characters or to develop the characters that he does create. The plot is so predictable that I am convinced the author looked for the most obvious possible developments. However, these faults could be forgiven - or at least ignored - if the exposition was even slightly worthwhile.
Unfortunately, its deficiencies in plot, character, world-building, and originality are complemented by quite possibly the worst writing I have ever seen. His descriptions substitute the reader's fantasy stereotypes for any actual use of adjectives. Perhaps he assumes that his entire audience is third graders. His language is consistently cliched and hackneyed. If you enjoy being hit in the face repeatedly with large bricks, this trilogy may be for you. If you actively hate literature, this trilogy is definitely for you. If you're looking for a simple but entertaining story without too many preconceptions, read the Belgariad.

Customer Reviews:
Well-written........2006-08-02
Good plot, good handling of characterization, including the odd (but interesting and plausible) use of the character Ralph Offenhouse, introduced in the episode "The Neutral Zone", a very successful businessman from the 20th century who was frozen when he died until a cure could be found, awakening in the 24th century and very much an anachronism, as a Federation Ambassador dealing with the Ferengi. The man is still an anachronism, but having had some time to assimilate into his new time period, we find that the skills which made him successful in his own time are not completely without merit in his new time.
Another item worthy of note: the syntax of the language of the aliens in this book is complex enough that the Universal translator, while making the words and even the meaning understandable, doesn't completely eliminate the sense of the exotic. A nice touch.
Well above average as Star Trek stories go.
STNG #30 Debtors' Planet - A fairly decent first novel!.......2003-10-11
I found "Debtor's Planet" to be one of those truly rare Star Trek novels where the author tackled something different that other authors haven't tried too often. Given the time in which this novel was written and published, the Ferengi hadn't been explored too greatly on Star Trek The Next Generation just yet. From what we had seen, we saw they're "merchant" militaristic types, which are completely in contradiction to the civilian types we grew to love on Deep Space Nine.
"Debtor's Planet" is the first of only two Star Trek novels by this author and I found their writing style to be fairly fluidic and the pacing to be, for the better part, fairly engaging. I couldn't quite rate this one as highly as I'd like to though, given the characterization errors that seemed to jump out at a fan. The overall plot development and pacing does overcome these blaring errors for me though. It would be nice to see this author make another foray into the Star Trek genre after such a long absence.
The cover art is, not much better than the standard fare for the time though, but it does lend a bit to the story, letting the reader know that there will be a memorable character from the first season in this novel.
The premise:
A Vulcan space probe reports that the Ferengi are advancing the people of the planet Megara, from a pre-warp, primitive agricultural state to a sophisticated, technological society. The Enterprise is ordered to transport a rather odd "Ambassador" to the planet to deal with this problem. The Ambassador, Ralph Offenhouse, who was introduced in the first season's closing episode "The Neutral Zone," is a ruthless, twentieth century business man whose character gets some decent fleshing out in this story.
Besides greatly advancing the Megaran people technologically, the Ferengi, who turn out to only be the puppets here, are turning the hard working and honorable people into vicious, xenophobic killers. Captain Picard must now find a way to extricate the Ferengi and their puppet masters from this planet and in doing so, save the entire Federation.
What follows from there, is a fairly decent first novel for this author and one that I would definitely recommend to any and all fans of the genre. {ssintrepid}
Not bad so far, BUT....................2003-09-18
I've only started to read this book, and so far, so good. The premise is interesting enough. Bringing back and old one-time character to deal with the Ferengi sounds like it might provide for a good story. HOWEVER, JUST IN THE FIRST 2 CHAPTERS ALONE...the author makes MAJOR errors in Star Trek terms. A) There IS NO SUCH WORD AS "Klingonese"! (W. R. Thompson and his editor John J. Ordover should get that in their head!) The Klingon language and anything Klingon is simply referred to as "Klingon" NOT "Klingonese"!!!!!!!!!!, B) The homeworld of the Ferengi IS CALLED "Ferenginar"! (NOT "Ferengal"!!!!!!!). Now this might be nitpicking, but Trekkies are a nitpicky bunch. If you mess up on something as simple as the proper name for the homeworld of a major Trek species, that's pretty bad! What if someone called Earth, "Oarth", or "Earathal"?? You won't like it would you? So don't call Ferenginar as "Ferengal"!!!!!!!
A good story, albiet not quite charachter accruate.......2003-07-07
Debtors Planet is a good story involving a certain Mr Offenhouse(remember the episode in which the Enterprise found a space capsule with several frozen people from the 20th century on it?) who has now found he has a knack for dealing with the Ferengi.
A planet has progressed exceddingly fast in it's technology, raising concerns with the federation and so the Enterprise is dispatched with Ambassador Offenhouse as Ferengi presence has been detected. The author did a good job of fleshing out this charachter who was only a one timer in the series.
The plot thickens into a prety good story as the investigation moves on. A few cavets; Worf, Dianna Troi, and Riker aren't portraied well in many places in the story. Secondly, the author takes a bit too much travel into explaining past episodes, many of which don't have much to do with the story at all(i.e. Wesley Crushers incident at Starfleet Academy). Thirdly, some sections of the book read like a conversation which may have been taken from a physics or Astronomy textbook, but then there are glaring errors in some aspects of Astronomy and scientific areas. Because of these reasons I can't really give this book four stars, but don't let that stop you from reading this enjoyable TNG novel.
Who are you and what are you doing on the Enterprise?.......2001-11-10
This was a very odd book. The characters were interesting, and they did interesting things, but they bore almost no resemblance to the characters we watched on TV for seven years. For example, Riker eats a strange Klingon dish and gets sick from it, as he had been warned. He wouldn't have done that, as he would have known better. Worf throwing popcorn at a movie screen? Puh-leeze. I think this author (whose storyline was excellent) should get a better handle on the characters before trying to write another Trek novel.

GREAT BOOK!!!!.......1999-05-13
This is one of the most charming and touching children's literature books I have ever read!!! I would recommend this book to children of all ages including those young at heart!!
A wonderful book told by a little girl about her grandparen.......1999-04-09
This is a children's book written by a little girl whose teacher though her essay about her grandparents would make a wonderful book. The book tells the story of a family who during the depression had no work. So they picked potatoes. The owner of the farm told them that any potatoes they picked after hours were theirs to keep. The entire family picked potatoes, loaded them on their ancient car, drove back to their hometown, and supported themselves with their potato cache for the next winter. I will use the book to encourage my children and grandchildren to keep family stories alive.

Ghosts.......2005-04-19
There are some weird grownups in Bailey City. But could Aunt Mathilda really be haunted by a hungry ghost? The Bailey School Are going To Find out!
Ghosts don't eat potato chips By Debbie Dadey.......2005-01-29
This book is about Eddie and his friends who have the chore of taking Eddie's great aunt Matilda her meals. They see, and hear many signs that some one other than Matilda is in the house. Is it a thief, a murderer, or a ghost?
I did not enjoy the book at all. It was to obvious too me what was going on. But I am sure other younger kids would like it.
Stevi's Review.......2004-02-13
Ghosts Don't Eat Potato Chips is a very good book! It is about a mean old lady who lives in an old run down house in the present. Her nephew's name is Eddie, and Howie his best friend. His grandfather died in his attic. When Eddie was walking to his grandmother's house, he was walking past Howie's house. Howie came out and said, "Can I come?" "Yes Howie," I said. When they got there, the house looked so creepy they did not want to go in. Will they ever stop being so selfish? Howie spilt his chips on accident. When he went to pick them up, they spelled A-T-T-I-C and when he looked in the attic window, there was a man. He turned around to tell Eddie. They looked and he was gone. This is a very good book, and I would recommend that you read it.It is mysterious.
Do Ghosts Eat Potato Chips?.......2001-10-30
This book is about a boy named Eddie and his friends Howie, Lisa
and Melody who have to help take care of his great aunt
Malthida. They do not want to do it because they think she is
mean. She is sick and Eddie's Grandma wants him to help her out.
The first day they got to her house they bring her some food
to eat that Eddie's Grandma had made for her. On that day that
they went, Howie who likes to eat potato chips saw a ghost in
the window of Aunt Mathilda's house. Eddie told his friend that
there is no such thing as ghosts.
The next day all the kids went back to Aunt Mathilda's house
to bring her some more lunch to eat. It was cold so they had to
warm it up for her. While lunch was heating up Aunt Mathilda and
the kids played poker. She played really good. They played to
long that lunch burned. Since lunch had burned they got her some
fast food for lunch. Some potato chips came with her lunch and
while they sat at the table eating and talking the potato chips
disappeared. When they got back to her house they gave her the
lunch and she said she liked it. While the kids were there she
got sick and had to go to the hospital.
While Aunt Mathilda was in the hospital the kids went to the
house to prove that there is no such thing as ghosts. The
electricity went out because of a storm so they couldn't see
very well in the attic. They saw a big trunk that looked like a
coffin. The kids all opened it at the same time and found Uncle
Jasper's hat and what else do you think they found? You will
have to read this book to find out what they find.
I really did like this book because I like Bailey School Kids
books.

Book Description
The Great Potato Bake-Off" is a hilarious, educational children's story set in a tiny town called Spudsville. These potatoes of different color and sizes proudly anticipate the onset of a contest in which they will be judged for their tasty qualities. This story abounds those who have gone before them, proudly ending us as French fries, Baked or Mashed potatoes. With tension running high, the perplexed judges finally decided, that no potato is better than the other. It is a fictitious potato contest that demonstrates the ways in which the color of an individual's skin does not indicate their value as a person. The story is intended to show us why we must eliminate the ways people tend to divide people. My sister wrote this story as an appeal to young readers by sharing with them a new theme for learning a most valuable lesson.

Customer Reviews:
Best book on "hand quilting" for the beginner........2006-11-27
I've been researching books that teach hand quilting for quite a while and never found one that I felt satisfied with until I discovered this one. This is my favorite hand quilting guide for several reasons. First, the author presents three different methods of hand quilting: the rocking stitch (on a hoop or frame with shorter needles), lap quilting (with no hoop or frame and longer needles), and quilting done one stitch at a time ("stab stitching") which causes the least amount of stress on the wrist. All of these techniques are supported with excellent photos and written descriptions that are easy to understand and follow. Second, the author reviews various quilt battings that can be used in hand quilting and provides recommendations on how to "split" a batting to obtain the thinnest batting possible for ease of hand quilting. Third, the author provides a very intelligent framework for developing a quilting design strategy for your particular quilt, which begins with a high level overview of the "major" design decisions. After you pass these hurdles, everything else easily falls into place. An added bonus is a historical overview of stitching done on antique applique quilts and the rationale for design choices made by women in the 18th and 19th Centuries. I had been searching for a book that focuses on quilting designs for applique quilts so this was very greatly appreciated.
Fourth, the author also provides an excellent review of quilting frames and needles in addition to excellent guidance on how to prepare thread for hand quilting with the use of bees wax. Fifth, the author provides guidance for making your own feather designs for borders and includes templates in the book using a method that I have never seen before and inspired me to try. There is so much encouraging and supportive advice in this book. The author is a 6th generation quilter and has done extensive research on antique quilts and is a master hand quilter as well as an excellent writer and teacher. It is so very rare to get written instruction for a visual art that is this good for beginners. I know there are alot of other highly praised authors on this subject, but after exploring everything out there, I found this one to be the absolute best! Apparantly alot of other people seem to agree, more than 50,000 copies have sold since it first came out in print in 2003.
Kimball is a favorite.......2005-12-26
I don't keep every quilt book I buy, but this one is a keeper. If you're a hand quilter or want to be, you will benefit from this book. Ms Kimball is one of my favorite applique and quilting people. I always learn something new from her. This book is no exception.
Hand-quilting thrives!!.......2004-03-30
With hundreds of quilting books, I didn't need another one. But since Jeana Kimball's needles are my favorite, I took a chance. Wow!! How did she get so much information in 80 pages? She covers quilting through, around, and for applique, popular designs for the body of the quilt as well as the borders(both historical and modern), and tools. Every step is punctuated with a glossy color photo example of an actual hand-made masterpiece. And Jeana is classy, when she discusses needles, she doesn't even mention her own.
How much is there to say about Hand Quilting?.......2000-02-16
Just a couple of pages in this book are actually about the process of quilting itself. There is a long part about the history of quilts (quite good if you are interested in that), a gallery of quilts (beautifully quilted) and general instructions on materials and planning a quilt. The author also tries to explain how to make a quilting design fit the size of your own quilt but that is done very poorly. I have seen much better instructions in other books. The quilting part is okay but it is just a few pages. This is definitely not a book every quilter needs even if you prefer hand quilting to machine quilting.
