New Beginnings: in support of Tsunami Relief ........2006-03-10
I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. It was good to be able to support a good cause and have the opportunity to do so.I am not normally a short story person but this was different. It allowed me to read "First Chapters" from many authors,It did inspire me,I did want to read more. There is a wide variety of authors and subjects. You can pick and choose what suits you.I wanted to read more of "untitled Novel" but there did not seem to be a novel but I did follow up on some of the others. It was fun and I learnt a lot. I hope this idea continues as it is great for everyone. It helps readers, writers,
and those that suffer alike. I will recommend it to my friends and I hope others enjoy it as I have. Susan Preston
What Great Fun...for a Great Cause........2005-04-07
If you're the kind of person who likes the whole "sampler" concept -- be it music, food, wine or even speed dating -- this delicious collection is a just what you're looking for. Each "chapter" provides an excerpt from an upcoming novel or collection by some of our very best writers. They range from cutting-edge literature (Margaret Atwood) to mystery (Harlan Coben) to family drama (Scott Turow), plus many other genres. There's even a short story by Stephen King and a poem. Most of these books won't be available for purchase until later this year.
Virtually all of the material was donated at no charge by the authors, literary agents and publishers involved. Even most of the printing cost was donated. All net proceeds go to Save the Children's relief efforts in the tsunami-striken areas.
Warning: You may be so intrigued by some of these "samples" that you may feel frustrated the full book isn't yet available. Are you listening, Dutton Publishing? I need my next Harlen Coben fix!

Book Description
The classic forerunner to
The Fall of the Kings now with three bonus stories.
Hailed by critics as “a bravura performance” (Locus) and “witty, sharp-eyed, [and] full of interesting people” (Newsday), this classic melodrama of manners, filled with remarkable plot twists and unexpected humor, takes fantasy to an unprecedented level of elegant writing and scintillating wit. Award-winning author Ellen Kushner has created a world of unforgettable characters whose political ambitions, passionate love affairs, and age-old rivalries collide with deadly results.
Swordspoint
On the treacherous streets of Riverside, a man lives and dies by the sword. Even the nobles on the Hill turn to duels to settle their disputes. Within this elite, dangerous world, Richard St. Vier is the undisputed master, as skilled as he is ruthless--until a death by the sword is met with outrage instead of awe, and the city discovers that the line between hero and villain can be altered in the blink of an eye.
Customer Reviews:
Witty and fast-paced!.......2007-10-05
A swordsman and a scholar get caught up in political intrigue in a nameless 18th century-type town. The gay romance has to share center stage with the viewpoints of the nobles and their power-plays, but there are a few fleeting sex scenes. Full length review available at my Obsidian Bookshelf website (see my Amazon profile for the URL).
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
I suppose Swordspoint is supposed to be a fantasy, but the fantasy is pretty much just the 'different setting'.
Here, a professional swordsman and duellist gets a bit more involved in the politics and machinations of the place than he would like, and has to try and keep both himself and his lover safe while doing the right thing.
"Everyone lives at Swordspoint.".......2007-08-27
In Riverside a famous Swordsman named Richard St Vier lives and dies by the sword. He and his lover Alec go all around Riverside. Alec tries to get himself killed by somebody better than him and St Vier kills the men for him.
When Richard St Vier is blackmailed he knows what he must do:
"A swordsman can't afford to be blackmailed."
Richard is accused of murder now and he doesn't know if he'll live or die. It's a matter of honor to what he did to a noble but will the court believe that? Will they understand the twists and turns that even Richard doesn't understand? Let's hope that Alec will come to save the day... Will he?
I would like to congratulate Ms. Kushner on a wonderful book! Some people said this book was slow. It's true that in some points of the story you may feel like you're getting absolutely nowhere but I assure you that it'll pass and you'll enjoy this book a lot. And remember: "Everyone lives at Swordspoint."
intricate fantasy, finely drawn.......2007-06-29
This is a wonderful book. It's got beautiful prose, lovely imagery, comedy, drama, intrigue, action -- everything you could want in a historical fantasy novel.
The plot can be somewhat difficult to follow as it moves from the drawing-room intrigues of the rich to the bohemian taverns of the students, drinkers, swordsmen, and gamblers of Riverside, but it barely matters. There's more than enough to ogle along the way, even if you're never quite in a position to grasp the whole picture of who-betrayed-whom and for-what-reason.
Also, Swordspoint features one of the most well-done relationships I have ever read, gay or otherwise. Mostly, I think, it's because Alec Tremontaine is an absolute gem of a character. He's both beautiful and despicable, noble and dissolute, and he's so finely drawn that he just steals whatever scene he's in, even if he's lounging around in the background of it. In order to really get into this book, you have to fall in love with self-destructive, sarcastic, bitter, brilliant Alec the way Richard St. Vier does, you have to understand what it's like to love someone who's unpredictable and talented and simultaneously deeply flawed, and why such love, capricious and difficult as it is, might be worth risking everything for.
There are many, many authors who strive to create such flawed and beautiful characters, and in my opinion often fail miserably. It's hard to pull off such a thing convincingly, and Kushner does it admirably here. And it's not only the character of Alec that's convincing; it's also the way Alec and Richard play off one another, contrast with one another, Richard's constant optimism a constant foil to Alec's bitter sarcasm and mercurial temperament. The relationship is utterly believable, intensely passionate, and ultimately a joy to read.
She also captures the mad, bad, reckless atmosphere of the Riverside bohemian life -- the gambling, the drinking, the danger, the poverty -- beautifully. The life Alec and Richard live is awful and yet -- the freedom of it is exhilarating, the way they do whatever they want, whenever they want to -- and scrape by the rest of the time. It puts one powerfully in mind of the streets of Paris a la La Boheme or Les Miserables.
Both the world and the characters in it are beautifully done, and worth reading, especially if you like Dumas novels or Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series. I would not recommend this for those who prefer less intrigue in their novels, or who prefer novels of epic proportions (Robert Jordan-ish). Those novels are like gigantic floor-to-ceiling canvases; Kushner's novel is not so much a grand-scale painting as an intricate miniature, perfect in every detail.
Swordfights, intrigue,crime....... all in all, a first rate story! :).......2007-02-15
This is a masterpiece of a book, with glowing reviews from Robert Jordan, George R. R. Martin and many, many others. If you don't like intrigue, though, this book isn't for you. It's about Richard St. Vier, the most skilled swordsman of the time. In this world, nobles hire swordsmen to fight their enemies in public battles to settle dispites. However, the swordsmen themselves have little standing in society. In the city (it is given no name in the book), complex plots for power are underfoot, as nobles wage silent wars against each other. In Riverside (the town on the other side of the river), however, life is completley different. It's a town of criminals, poor people, and those who have nowhere else to go. The story really takes off when Richard is cut loose by an employer when a job goes wrong, and has to suffer the reprecussions. You also get the viewpoints of Micheal, a noble from the city; and Alec, from Riverside. Definatley pick this one up!

Book Description
The Third Law of Robotics states that a robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws. After the diplomatic failures of the Spacer mission on Earth, Ambassador Ariel Burgess and roboticist Derec Avery are recalled to their home planet, Aurora. Their situation only worsens when they arrive, as they become suspects in another murder--one that could only have been committed by a non-human. On a world with a 20-to-1 robot-to-human population, is it possible a robot could have violated the Three Laws governing its behavior--and if so, why? Or is something far more sinister at work?

EYESTRAIN!.......2007-10-08
It is physically uncomfortable trying to read this book... even with my reading glasses.... the type can't be larger than 7 point, and we're talking about 422 pages! I had read the first in the series and liked the bits about the "Bogard" robot. I confess that I skipped the middle book, but I figured I would still enjoy reading the conclusion of the trilogy. Well, maybe I would if it didn't involve going half blind in the process... but it just doesn't seem worth it!

I really didn't think Mr. Tiedemann could continue to please after the two parts of this story (Mirage and Chimera) proved to be so entertaining.....but I was wrong, Aurora was an excellent conclusion to this trilogy. I only dinged it one star (the first two got 5 stars) because a character I really liked and hoped to see again dies...oh well.
I whole-heartedly recommend this series!! Worth every penny!
A must read for all SF fans.......2002-04-24
Tiedemann brings Asimov's robot universe to life in unexpected ways. The complex twists and turns of the story keep your attention riveted.
Once you pick up this book, or any other of Tiedemann's work, you can't put it down until you reach the end. I's like getting a box of chocolates, you can't have just a little bite, you want the whole thing.
This book, in particular, delves into subjects and themes that are both cutting-edge and timeless. His characters seem real, with real problems and attitudes. Even his robots are imaginative and have personalities that capture the imagination and leave you wanting more.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone that loves great SF.
This Brings Asimov Up to Date.......2002-04-16
Okay, if you have any personal integrity whatsoever you've already read Mirage and Chimera, the previous Tiedemann titles in this Asimov's Robot Mystery series. They were both great reads, but this is the one that (being a SFWA member) I'm giving a Nebula recommendation to. (And I usually don't do that for so-called "sharecropper" novels.) Why? Because this novel goes way beyond the mystery/action level of the previous books, and brings the background into play in very interesting ways. Without discussing the plot, I'll only say that it also brings the Asimov "universe" up to date with the concerns of modern SF readers. Questions like "Where's the nanotech?" and "What about AI's?" and "What happened to the Spacers?" are dealt with, or ominously foreshadowed. Most importantly, the questions raised by the existence of Bogard are not swept under the rug or reduced to a mere plot point to be conveniently tied up later. Bogard raises fundamental questions about the Three Laws, and robotics in general, and Tiedemann faces up to them and lets them play out. Good stuff.

Science of Sound Stunning.......2003-10-01
I really enjoyed this pocket-sized book. It was a great introduction to the whole idea of using your inner power and utilizing that through what Mrs Prophet calls "the science of the spoken word". What makes the whole series of pocketbooks by the same publisher so good is the fact that they have real life stories as well as spiritual and esoteric teachings. I have been practicing the power of mantras, affirmations and decrees now for a number of years and have found that it makes a difference in my life. i've become a happier person with more balance, joy and sense of empowerment over my life and the situations in the world that concern us, like child abuse, environmental pollution, poverty etc. This book is a must if you haven't really tested the "science of the spoken word" in your life.
Wonderful Life Affirmations.......2000-08-11
Prophet has done it again. This time it is affirmations. If anyone has ever visited her website you will see it is filled with mantras, fiats, and affirmations all over the place. This book has an organization of chapters that simplistically explain how to change your life and the health of your mind and body through the use of spoken words. Prophet may not be the best channeler there is but she is the best source of affirmations creative visualizations.

Amazon.com
Peri Wolfman has been organizing things for a long time. As a child, she kept her clothes neatly folded on a chair beside her bed, deciding it was easier to see everything at a glance that way. Then for many years she arranged striking displays at her noted store, Wolfman-Gold & Good. Here, she peeks into the closets, drawers, and medicine cabinets of willing victims to find answers to organizing the clutter of everyday life. The attractive photographs showcase a fashionable country approach: distressed cupboard doors, old canning jars arrayed on gleaming shelves, collections artfully arranged on a weathered table, timeworn wooden benches piled atop one another to hold books or assorted items, lots of wicker baskets. Also prevalent is a kind of industrial chic featuring banks of wire shelving systems, streamlined kitchens in which even the refrigerator is camouflaged, open shelves supporting row upon row of identical items (fluffy white towels, bottles of water, stacks of white china). If that style has appeal for you, you'll find plenty of good tips on what to do with lots of stuff in A Place for Everything. There are clever tips on how to make the detritus look decorative: family photos, for instance, are adeptly corralled in a commercial postcard display rack; silver cups or other interesting containers hold makeup accessories while adding a touch of glamour to the dressing table; a line of sturdy glass vases on a buffet holds silverware; a grid of corked test tubes makes a nice spice rack.
There's really not much here on actually getting rid of clutter; the emphasis is on concealing what needs to be hidden and skillfully organizing the rest. This is not a fix-it-and-forget-it solution--maintaining these arrangements takes some work. "Like a garden," Wolfman tells us, "a closet requires regular tending and care. It won't keep itself in order." --Amy Handy
Book Description
There's something about a closet door that stimulates curiosity. Who among us doesn't want to take a peek behind it, especially when it's in the home of a friend who has a real eye for design and who also possesses the keys to being organized?
Peri Wolfman and Charles Gold have those very friends, and they persuaded them to open their doors and share the secrets of stylish storage. Their aim was to provide original and creative solutions for the problem of keeping up with all the things that accumulate in our lives.
What they found was that you don't need to build new storage (though there is a plan for an "everything closet" to cover all needs). Once you start arranging by shape or color or you invest in some great old cabinets or baskets, what was once clutter can become a collection. Vintage or new pegs and hooks are great to look at and can hold it all, from necklaces in the bedroom to coats and hats in the mudroom. Old benches can be stacked as bookshelves. Runners can be installed on the bottom of kitchen shelves, doubling your storage space for stemware. Drawers can be retrofitted with special slots for your silver, or you can amass a collection of pressed glass and use it to display your cutlery.
A Place for Everything is filled with stylish and sensible advice for clutter control in kitchens and dining rooms, living rooms and dens, bedrooms, baths, sheds, and basements. And tucked between the chapters are special sections with ideas for coping with photographs and collections, paper and pencils, and countless other little items. What's more, A Place for Everything gives you a chance to peek behind all those closed doors.
Customer Reviews:
An inspiration for the owner of a very small home.......2003-02-06
I love to pick this book up and just flip through the pages. The photos are beautiful. I find the storage ideas inside to be creative and lovely to look at, I especially like the photos of odd collections of things and how people have arranged them. On the other hand, this is not a "how to" book. It does not have weekend projects nor does it discuss how to get the clutter out of your life. It's just a lovely, inspirational book.
Are you AR?.......2002-01-23
This book reminds me of that Phil Hartman (sad...) character on Saturday
Night Live, the Anal-Retentive Carpenter. He would have loved
this book. Especially the photos of the "sheds" and "basements",
with all their tools lined up and hanging on perfect little hooks.
I agree with the other reviewers that bemoan the lack of practical
ideas and the abundance of country cottagey "distressed"
furniture, cutesy style. This is mostly a book for people who
buy everything from J. Crew and Pottery Barn and need just a
couple more "inspirations" to attain the ultimate catalog lifestyle
they've always dreamed of.
On the other hand, there are a smattering of photos that could give
you some ideas for your own, real-world home. I liked the idea
of a shelf above the bathroom door for storing towels (good
use of unused space). And some of the kitchen storage ideas
are reasonable (or can be made reasonable). But you could
probably get all that's useful from this book by just flipping
through it at a bookstore some day. That's what I'd recommend.
Hey, Look How Straight My Stuff Is Stacked!.......2002-01-01
I was in need of serious clutter management, but instead, I got plenty of glossy photos, showing off their plates, china, etc., in addition to many "Shabby Chic" display set ups. It didn't have any examples I found usable in my "real" situation.
loved it.......2001-12-31
This book is our bible as we build a cottage style home. Thank you to the Wolfman/Gold team for the inspirations that create comfort, warmth and organization.
Don't waste your money.......2001-11-16
This book is neither practical nor helpful. The authors made it easy on themselves by focusing on ideal circumstances from the start. For instance, they show a lot of "organizing" of all-white stuff, and their idea of "organizing" is simply stacking and displaying. It's easy to do that if everything you have is white. There also is the ridiculous situation of the big walk-in closet which they "make over" by adding a table and other stuff. If you have a big closet like that in the first place, you don't need much help. And who has a closet big enough for a table? If you live in the real world with regular closets and ordinary (anything but all-white!) stuff, you will not find any help here.

A very good songbook.......1998-11-24
This is a very good songbook. The reason that is gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that some of the chords may be to hard for players with less experience. Even though the songbook gets a 4, the CD and LeAnn get a 5!
