Book Description
What does it mean to be a good mother?
How far would you go in the name of love -- and justice?
Perfect Match
In the course of her everyday work, career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost prosecutes child molesters and works determinedly to ensure that a legal system with too many loopholes keeps these criminals behind bars. But when her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, is traumatized by a sexual assault, Nina and her husband, Caleb, a quiet and methodical stone mason, are shattered, ripped apart by an enraging sense of helplessness in the face of a futile justice system that Nina knows all too well. In a heartbeat, Nina's absolute truths and convictions are turned upside down, and she hurtles toward a plan to exact her own justice for her son -- no matter the consequence, whatever the sacrifice.

"Career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost knows the guilt familiar to all parents torn by the demands of home and office. But whereas most parents imagine the dangers that can befall their children, Nina witnesses them firsthand. She prosecutes child molesters -- and she has seen too many criminals slip through the system and walk free. Nina's husband, Caleb, is a stonemason, a methodical man who glories in his ability to construct physical barriers. But even the strongest walls cannot guard Nina and Caleb from the shattering discovery that their own beloved son has been sexually abused. Five-year-old Nathaniel is the only one who knows the identity of his assailant -- but the trauma has left him mute. Knowing the futility of trusting the courts to exact justice for Nathaniel, Nina finds herself in a grip of rage she can't deny -- no matter the consequence, whatever the sacrifice. What does it take to be a good mother? How far can a person go?

Good and bad. .......2007-09-21
I read reviews of the book here before I started it, so in the back of my mind I had the negative comments swimming around. I don't know if that affected how I felt about the story personally, but I do agree with the consensus that Nina is very hard to like as a protagonist and the outcome of her trial is more than a little ridiculous.
One thing that bothered me was the stereotype of the Louisiana characters. I am a native of south Louisiana, from a town about 20 miles south of New Orleans. I am familiar with Belle Chasse and it is not a redneck city - people one might stereotypically consider a redneck are found more in north Louisiana. Sorry, but it's true. Her description of the 'my neck is red' deputy annoyed me so much because it's inaccurate for the southern city she I guess randomly decided to pick. I mean, come on, even a bayou stereotype would have been closer to the truth. It was a tired stereotype, and an incorrect one at that. Ms. Picoult is from the north, and so while I wouldn't expect her to be an expert on the different accents and cultures you find in the south, I also wouldn't expect her to just assume she knows. OK, I'm done with my rant about that.
Overall, Picoult knows how to write a page-turner - but she probably could have done it in a lot less pages. Then at least some of those who felt let down by the ending would have wasted a little less time.
Don't Waste Your Time.......2007-09-07
This book is probably the worst I have read in several years. The characters are unappealing and the child (Nathaniel) is unbelievable. In fact, I'm really not sure how this book was approved for publication.
There are two major flaws in Perfect Match. The first is the underlying "morality" of killing someone in retaliation for harming one's child and knowing that as a lawyer you have a good chance of finding a way to get away with it. It doesn't matter if the alleged (and this is a key word here) molester is guilty or not; it is enough that one thinks he is. Nowhere in the book does the author make her protagonist truly sorry for what she did. Evidently the end justifies the means and it's icing on the cake if you happen to get away without punishment.
The second major flaw is the character of Nathaniel. It's evident that the author has no clue regarding the mental and emotional capabilities of a five-year-old child. If she is too lazy to really research this area indepth before writing another novel that includes a child, she should stick to adult characters. It did not appear that the author consulted any type of child development journals or books before developing the character of Nathaniel. Consequently, the character is unbelievable.
I'll give the author one star, but only because she is able to string words together to make a coherent sentence. Evidently she listened in Junior High English Comp class. However, that's as far as her abilities extend in this book. I wouldn't pay a dime for it and if someone wants to loan it to you you'd do better to spend your time on something far more deserving.
Got under my skin a little..........2007-08-22
I've been reading all of Picoult's books because I loved "Nineteen Minutes" so much, and I wanted to see what else she'd written. But the more I'm reading, the more I'm starting to see a common pattern: a speech about DNA, a tall black person which readers are constantly reminded is black but the race of the other characters are barely mentioned if at all, someone who answers questions by saying "Ayuh," and a trial. I like when writers leave their signature marks although I'm not too crazy about the CONSTANT need to bring up the black folks in her book as if we need the post-it every once in awhile, and for the life of me, I don't understand how the lone black folks in predominantly white towns manage to be so behind the scenes. I've been in small, white towns before and a brotha or a sista sticks out like an eagle, so how there are characters who manage to do hidden research and nobody knows who they are or where they are is so far-fetched to me.
But that's not what got me. This book rubbed me the wrong way for several other reasons. #1 I couldn't sympathize with the main character, especially when the DNA situation was resolved. #2 If I were on the jury and the ending hadn't been the way it did, I'd have voted the EXACT opposite of the final verdict! When I heard the results, I rolled my eyes and curled my lip. #3 Picoult has a habit of trying to talk like a child in those scenes with kids, but then going into too much grown-up vocabulary. There's a scene when Nathaniel is talking about a bird, but instead of just calling it a bird, he calls it the proper name for it. That's tedious, but it seemed a little odd to me considering his vocabulary throughout the rest of the book. Also, I wondered how Nathaniel immediately knew the bailiff was not a police officer considering the demeanor of both. To an adult, this would be fair, but to a five-year-old, it seemed too mature. #4 Throughout the whole book and as many times as the topic of the rape was brought up, I don't recall ONE scene where either of the parents, the babysitters, and even the psychiatrist told the boy it wasn't his fault. That was really aggravating me, especially when he vocally said he did something bad. I really wanted someone to sit down and talk to him and tell him he did nothing wrong and that never happened. #5 I almost took the book back when I read the line about Johnnie Cochran. Whenever people want to talk about defense attorneys who got their clients off, it always goes back to Cochran and usually hints at O.J. Nobody ever brings up how Emmitt Till's killers got off, trials like the ones the Jena 6 are going through, and so many other trials in small towns where people have gotten off scotfree. But Cochran is forever getting picked on, and I respect him (R.I.P.) a great deal. When I read that line about Cochran probably has nightmares about defending guilty people, I glared at the page, thinking of how many trials that Cochran has tried that meant so much to the Black community. I believe he slept well knowing the sacrifices he made to fight against racial profiling and so forth. That comment was my own personal hang-up, but considering Picoult felt the need to mention him in the book, I feel the need to mention it in my review.
However, there was one strong part of Picoult's book that kept me pushing through it. Without telling the story, there is a scene where Nathanial jumps up and Nina thinks he's going to run to Caleb, but instead he runs to Nina. My eyes immediately watered and I choked up, trying not to cry on a public, crowded train and look really crazy to other riders. That was the most memorable scene that I've read in all of her books because it was so raw, so open, so realistic, and very touching. Although I never want one, I think children are entertaining and enjoy watching them interact in stories and real life, and I'd become so smitten with Nathaniel (I wasn't buying that window/bathroom interruption at all--that whole scene should've been deleted because it did nothing for the plot). But as usual, I think Picoult is a fascinating writer. I'm going to give her books a rest for a minute to get over my grudge with the Cochran comment because that still bothers me, but I'll be back.
The Package Deal.......2007-08-11
It's rare in the world of publishing these days to find a book that not only provides you with a quality story, but with exceptional writing as well. Picoult offers us just that with "Perfect Match." She shifts perspectives throughout the novel to allow us into the hearts and minds of all of her primary characters and it is a unique reading experience that makes you feel so deeply involved in the story that you'll feel as if you could climb right into the book. You will find yourself sympathizing with even the most difficult of characters, and considering for yourself the true capabilities that we all quietly possess at the hands of love and despair. This book is about a struggle for justice in a world where right and wrong is a thousand shades of gray. Do not miss out on this precious read.
Not for me.......2007-06-17
This book convinced me that I'm no longer a Jodi Picoult reader. I get why some people would like it--the flowery imagery and heart-wrenching subject matter pulls at the heart; but I found the book to be overwritten and sensational. Besides, I couldn't identify with the main character who would add trauma to her already traumatized son by taking the law into her own hands. Picoult is known for her ability to end the story with an unforeseen twist and to effectively use various points of views; I guessed every twist in the book well in advance and I felt like each character had the same emotive voice, even the construction-worker husband. I like women's fiction, but this was a bit too much.

Book Description
In his debut novel, literary alchemist Jeff VanderMeer takes us on an unforgettable journey, a triumph of the imagination that reveals the magical and mysterious city of Veniss through three intertwined voices. First, Nicholas, a would-be Living Artist, seeks to escape his demons in the shadowy underground–but in doing so makes a deal with the devil himself. In her fevered search for him, his twin sister, Nicola, spins her own unusual and hypnotic tale as she discovers the hidden secrets of the city. And finally, haunted by Nicola’s sudden, mysterious disappearance and gripped by despair, Shadrach, Nicola’s lover, embarks on a mythic journey to the nightmarish levels deep beneath the surface of the city to bring his love back to light. There he will find wonders beyond imagining…and horrors greater than the heart can bear.
By turns beautiful, horrifying, delicate, and powerful, Veniss Underground explores the limits of love, memory, and obsession in a landscape that defies the boundaries of the imagination. This special edition includes the short stories “The Sea, Mendeho, and Moonlight”; “Detectives and Cadavers”; and “A Heart for Lucretia” and the novella Balzac’s War, offering a complete tour of the fantastic world of Veniss.

I loved it!.......2007-05-30
Vandermeer is pretty damned good. To be able to communicate the fantastic and surreal in such a subtle fashion; the reader accepts what is happening as if it were commonplace. This story is so many things, horrifying, outrageous, insane, yet what holds it all together, one bloody step after another, is an understated, human love story. Vandermeer is obviously one of those writers that other authors read, not only to see what is possible, but to see how the hell to pull it off.
Stick with it, it gets less confusing.......2007-05-08
Unfortunately my copy of this book doesn't include the extra stories so I only had the pleasure of reading the main story. The first section of the story reminded me of Jeff Noon's Vurt or Pollen, it was rife with fantasy lingo and extreme future concepts and frankly very confusing. The 2nd section was more somber and creepy and then the last section (my favorite) was a surreal, horror-filled quest/adventure (akin to China Mieville's Perdido Street Station)
The mix of atmosphere's and writing styles worked for me. I enjoyed Vandermeer's City of Saints and Madmen and I would say this is on par with that in creativity and originality.
hauntingly beautiful.......2007-02-03
I was given this book as a gift and began reading it right away to block out all the holiday cheer. I found myself hurled into a world of beauty and garbage; any other lover of the cyberpunk and dystopian genres would understand the pull of god-like technology holding together the scraps. Certainly the Orpheus myth was unmistakable, but the book is a page turner nonetheless. Does the brief hope at the end of the first story survive the short-short collection following? (Well, I wouldn't want to give it all away...)
It was only after completing all the stories on the train ride home that the work took full effect. My mind filled in the gaps in time between the stories. I wanted more and yet could not bear to know. How much would you give to save that which you loved best of all, be it lover, sibling, social order or humanity? Vandermeer's characters, even though some exist for brief pages, grip the imagination with their sacrifices and hopes. If one had a critical turn of mind, one might ask what relevance this might have to current social/technological issues.
Mediocre.......2007-01-09
The writing was mediocre. The story idea is not original, but could be quite interesting regardless...but like I said the writing wasn't all that great. The only interesting story was about a destroyed city and a small civilzations attempt to recreate it and the ensuing trouble. This was written fairly well with interesting characters and fantastical creations.
Sometimes Haunting, But Ultimately Lacks Direction.......2006-08-26
This writer is clearly going places, but he needs to reign himself in. This book consists of a menagerie of weird artificial creatures and punchy ideas, woven together with an emotionally engaging multi-perspectival narrative. In hindsight (I read it a few months ago), the ideas really got under my skin, but as a story it just doesn't hang together as well as I'd hoped. More than a couple of chapters are masterfully executed, but others are vague and unfleshed. The book runs out of page-turning gas about halfway through. I got the sense that the author did not know where he was going plot-wise, and just kind of let the story spin out of control. Still, if you are looking for an intellectual mutagen, this is very worthwhile.

Classic Herbert Masterpiece.......2006-12-08
This book is one more proof of Herbert's mastery. The effort and difficulties in communication between a human and a being that perceives our dimension only as a "wave" is wonderfully laid out. The issue of communication between intelligent beings of different kinds (non-human) and cultures is one that Herbert plays a lot in his books, but in this one it was taken to another level.
God's origins.......2000-07-01
I find the book so deep that only after the 5th reading I understood Herbert was trying to conjure a new way to look onto the creation of our universe from a VERY uncustom perspective. OK, so I read it 5 times, and I'm venturing into my 6th now. Willing to sell me your herbert collection, don;t hesitate to contact. :)
"It is because you speak to me that I do not believe in you".......1999-11-10
One of the best short stories I have read, Whipping Star is most memorable for Fanny-May, an extra-dimentional Caleban whose death will mean the end of life. I definitely recomend it for any lover of fiction
Professional Obstructors Meet Supernova Who Just Needs Love.......1999-06-19
This was a clever book starring bureaucrats whose job is to intentionally derail governmental productivity and a sweet giant supernova named Caliban who just needs a little love. Together they must stop a wealthy & aristocratic S/M Mistress from destroying interstellar transportation. Reading this book will cause you to giggle like a madwoman.
Spellbinding.......1999-06-03
I first read this book in 10th grade for a book report, and I loved it. I have read it a few times since. The theme of communication is wonderfully played out.

Four for the price of one.......2007-06-29
This editon is a very good way to gain access to some lesser known novels by Frank Herbert. Included here are Whipping Star, The Dosadi Experiment, The Santaroga Barrier and Soul Catcher.
The first two are the ConSentiency duology, set in the universe first established in The Tactful Saboteur. Highly recommended at least as a glimpse at what else Herbert was capable of besides his masterwork Dune. It deals with a special being called a Caleban, who has come forward to all Sentient beings in the universe, and offered them the possibility of travelling instantenously between two points in the universe. Whipping Star deals with what happens when there is only one Caleban last in the world, and the possibility that its death will bring about the death of all Sentient beings who have used the jump-doors. The Dosadi Experiment expands on the ConSentiency universe, and deals with a conspiracy to kidnap users of the jump-doors.
The Santaroga Barrier deals with a small city in California where strangers are not welcome. Santaroga refuses to open itself to business from outside, and whenever anyone comes along that threatens their way of living, they are accidentally killed. It's a very good novel, though it's not exactly SF. It's more of an X-Files affair though of course it predates the famous TV show.
Soul Catcher is the one most removed from the rest of Herbert's other works. It's about a native-american who kidnaps a white boy, and all the coming-to-terms that ensues. It's a well-written novel, as all of Herbert's works are, and it touches upon many issues recurrent in his oeuvre, like communication problems, racial and cultural clashes and the power of myth.

Book Description
The home wine market has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade. The clear and well-ordered explanations in The Encyclopedia of Home Winemaking make it easy reading for the home winemaker and an essential reference guide that will be used for years.
Customer Reviews:
Moderately useful for a beginner.......2006-11-12
I started making wine at home several years ago and purchased this book as a handy home reference. I'd have to say this it is a mixed bag. Despite the title, this is not really an encyclopedia of home winemaking, but rather a reference for beginners. It would be an interesting and somewhat useful addition to your library if you are starting to make your own wine, but you'll be able to make drinkable wines without it. It is of little or no value to an intermediate or advanced home winemaker. There are eight chapters in this book. The first several describe the biology of the grapes and the chemistry of the fermentation process. Subsequent chapters present the basic winemaking equipment, the choice of must (concentrated, fresh, or juice), and basic techniques. The final two chapters outline measurement techniques (e.g. how to use the hydrometer to measure density) and different types of grape juice available to the home winemaker. Once you've made a few batches of wine, your knowledge will far exceed that in this book, and most of what you need to know to get started can be learned by talking with other knowledgable people. You aren't going to learn anything profound from this book. One caveat I should mention is that if you are making wine by crushing and squeezing grapes (as opposed to the concentrate kits or fresh must), this book is woefully inadequate and you should definitely look elsewhere. Overall, a decent reference for a beginner, but you can certainly get by without it.
"how to" without "why" - should be "booklet", not "encyclopedia".......2005-12-07
The book starts off with lots of wonderful detail - amounts of tannin in different parts of the grape, then rapidly turns into repetitively describing the steps in winemaking without explaining much of anything - this is a "cookbook" text, and after you read and use it you will only know how to follow the recipe in the book. For example, there is almost no discussion of the varieties of yeast and their effects on flavor, no recommendations for yeast types, no discussion of the effects of temperature on fermentation, etc. etc.
I suspect the book started out as a set of instructions that were written to go with a wine making kit, and the tale grew in the telling, but without adding too much content.
Sections of the book are written in a condescending tone - I assume this is a translation problem, but in any case the editor(s) should have fixed this. The authors clearly have had traumatic encounters with wine makers who didn't like to use chemicals and / or who favored using wild yeast, these are important topics and should be discussed ONCE each, again I fault the editor.
Either the author is unaware that quality wine being made outside of Europe, or else the book is simply too dated. The basic drift of the book is that you aren't likely to get great grapes so your wine won't be that good, but you can have fun following the recipe and make drinkable wine, particularly if you live somewhere where you can buy 'must' from the vendor they recommend.
It does include a nice list of grape varietals in the back. It does generally have good photos, and clear instructions, but simply isn't worth the purchase price, and in no way merits the term 'encyclopedia' - it would edit down nicely into a 20 page booklet.
Very solid, helpful guide.......2001-09-07
This book is, well, encyclopedic. Drapeau knows his stuff. And he shares it with us. He doesn't shy away from the details and he uses his extensive knowledge of the underlying chemistry to good effect. I would have to say that this book would be good for someone who has outgrown the "Basics"and "Introduction" books and wants to expand their horizon. A must for every winemakers library.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointment.......2003-03-12
This is a case of further entrenchment of misinformation combined with a shoddy job of making a book. While this book presents an abundance of images of shell-edged wares, they should not be called "feather edge" as that is an 18th-century rim pattern (and so explained within the book). But the images vary widely in quality with no attempt either in the photography stage or in color separation to balance the color, making the images unreliable as a visual reference.
There is no evidence of peer review or of any attempt at editing the text.
NO SUCH THING AS FEATHER EDGE WARE.......2002-10-09
The author of this book obviously doesn't understand pottery and the terminology that goes along with it.Another example of people writing books without any real basis of knowledge and publishers who don't care what people write.
