somewhat of a muddle.......2007-08-28
Plains Song is overall a sound novel, but suffers from some structural problems. It is as if Morris could not figure out the overall trajectory of the plot? Who are the central characters of the novel, and what is the overall conflict to be resolved? There are muddled intentions here, and it shows throughout this work. But overall, Wright is a master at detailing life on the Midwestern plains and the pivotal changes encountered by its inhabitants at the turn of the century. This redeems the novel somewhat, and makes it, if not anything, an interesting artifact.
There goes another one........2002-04-03
A fine novel, a masterpiece of concision, considering the breadth of the story. What saddens me is that there are no other Morris novels in print. This one is no better or worse than any of his other wonderful novels, but evidently rates publication because it has the word "female" in the title. His best novel, The Field of Vision, also won the National Book award.

Peter DelaSangre now enjoys a peaceful existence with his family on a private island retreat just off the coast of Miami. Customer Reviews:
Very well done.......2006-10-12
This series just keeps getting better. The twists and turns in this one left me wanting even more. The characters are rich and sympathetic. Troop does an excellent job of making them feel very real. Very entertaining and well written!
A most revealing third entry in the Delasangre series.......2006-03-11
One cannot help but draw comparisons between Alan F. Troop and Anne Rice (well, early Anne Rice, anyway) because, in a sense, Troop has done for dragons what Rice did for vampires - recreating them in a rich, original, truly fascinating fashion. The Seadragon's Daughter is the third entry in the Dragon Delasangre series, and it greatly adds to the history and mythology that Troop is developing for the creatures who refer to themselves as People of the Blood. Now we discover that there are actually four very different species of dragons in the world, and they don't always play well together.
All Peter Delasangre, a successful Miami businessman in his human changeling form, wants is to spend as much time as possible with his new wife (who was not an easy catch, as anyone who read Dragon Moon will know) and children, enjoy the luxuries and seclusion of his private island estate, stretch his wings in true dragon fashion, and - every now and again - enjoy the succulent pleasures of human flesh. A rare steak is tasty, but nothing beats the taste of live human-kabob. As usual, though, life just isn't that simple for Peter. A string of missing boaters and islanders in the areas has brought a lot of unwanted attention to his island paradise, as rumors on the mainland begin to point a finger of suspicion at the wealthy Delasangre. Peter's innocent - he's always careful about preying on solitary victims far away from his island - but that doesn't keep prying eyes away.
Peter has bigger problems on the horizon, though. A mysterious young female begins appearing on the island; not only will the seemingly innocent Lorrel place quit a strain on the Delasangres' marriage, she threatens to take Peter away from his family forever. He's as surprised as anyone to discover that Lorrel is a member of the Pelks, a sea-dwelling race of dragons thought to be extinct. The race is indeed dwindling, though - and faces extinction if it can't infuse its society with some fresh dragon blood. That's where Peter comes in, as he's poisoned and transported to the sea-dwelling dragons' underworld kingdom (where he will learn some surprising things about the history of his family and of his entire race). Without the antidote to the poison, it looks like he will never see home again. Then Peter learns that his wife and children are in danger - and that changes everything. There will be blood in the water before this drama ends, as no Delasangre gives up without one heck of a fight.
Despite the moral ambiguity (from a human perspective) of the People of the Blood, Peter Delasangre's story is in many ways a very human one. Sure, he takes great delight in eating people, but Peter Delasangre is every bit of a family man who will do anything to defend those he loves - even if it means sacrificing his own life in the process. Alan F. Troop seems to improve with every novel, and the introduction of no less than three new dragon races adds a surprising amount of depth to a series that could have begun drifting toward stagnancy by this point at the hands of a lesser writer - and, just as importantly, it promises truly great things for the future of the Dragon Delasangre series.
The Seadragon's Daughter (Dragon Delasangre).......2006-01-15
awsome read
Fantasy dolphins.......2005-05-02
In many ways, the book lives up to its amazing predecessors, The Dragon Delasangre and Dragon Moon. Troop writes about dolphins, however, as if he heard the word somewhere but never got any details.
Dolphins are not nearly so effective with their teeth as Troop portrays them. In packs they can kill large sharks, but they do it by ramming the fish senseless. If they could easily attack with their teeth, they wouldn't do it that way. On each fighting pass, a dolphin has just ONE chance to use his teeth, and he has no other weapons -- unless you count his ability to stun small fish with his sonar.
Peter, with his powerful hind legs, sharp claws, and far more maneuverable neck, jaws, and teeth, could easily tear apart a dolphin twice his own weight, and there wouldn't be any such. Pit the dragon against a killer whale, yes, but a dolphin? I don't think so.
The book really left me wondering where all the DANGEROUS fish were hiding; sharks and barracudas, for instance. In fact, the story makes more sense if all the dolphins were replaced by sharks -- except that sharks aren't intelligent enough.
I often wondered, too, how a dragon eats a human in mid-air without choking on the clothing!
He does it again!.......2005-02-14
If you have read the first 2 novels in the series (Dragon Delasangre and Dragon Moon) you will have come to love and hate Henri Delasangre. Knowing I would get my hands on a great story, I feared the expected turn-off to the main characters as had happened in the first two novels. It was that, "you hate it so much you have to read it" kind of feeling. But an all new cast is presented in this novel bringing with them a fresh start and a new story; and the possibility for many new and exciting stories to come. Alan F. Troop is a good writer. His novels are filled with excitement and action. It is the quick and easy-reading entertainment that draws me to the Delasangre books, not the love of the characters...which can be somewhat refreshing, I think. Take a break from those heavy tear-jerkers, and the books that leave you speechless and dumbfounded. Give these books a chance, they are very fun!
Book Description
Here, at last, are the confessions of one Peter DelaSangre, who tells of his life on an island off the coast of Miami...of his lonely balancing act between the worlds of humans and dragons...and of the overwhelming need that gives his life purpose: To find a woman of his own kind...

Cool Idea - Bad Story.......2007-05-19
If there was an option for no stars, I would have almost picked it. The only reason this story deserves at least a star is because I like the concept.
But the execution of this story is boring, predicatable, and like a (bad) dragon furry fap fest. Now I know why it was $5.99 at Borders.
Do yourself a favor, return this book, now, and get "Kitty and the Midnight Hour" instead. At least Kitty's funny.
They ate a lot of people..........2007-04-11
I found this story ok, but it reminded me a lot of the Saint of Dragons by Jason Hightman. The Saint of Dragons was a lot better too. Both books had the same idea: dragons living among us.
I read this book in one weekend because I had nothing else to do. The story moved slowly in the beginning but picked up toward the middle. I didn't have a favorite character because none were that likeable. It is hard to really like a book if you don't have any characters that you enjoy or relate to.
The dragons in The Dragon Delasangre ate at least 10 people, not including traveling time, while waiting for the papers, at home, and at the feast.
I hope that when you read The Dragon Delasangre you find a character likeable.
Campy?.......2007-01-17
When I first saw this book in the store I started laughing. The title and description on the back made me think that this could be a bad, campy, fun book. Unfortunately it was more bad than anything else. While this book certainly had some fun moments it mostly was Dragon-porn.
Dragon with humanity.......2006-07-31
I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a fun read and kept me turning the pages. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a great, fun read? Yes. I liked the way Troop gave the dragons their own hidden culture. These are different dragons. They live for a few hundred years instead of thousands. They are not so big that they dominate everything. They can be killed. They are not your typical dragon of fantasy literature. I also liked they way Peter Delasangre was given feelings for the humans he has to kill. He seems a monster trapped in a world without escape. "We are what we are."
Dragons .......2006-07-04
My oh my. I can see why many reviewers found this novel offensive. It would certainly take an open mind to be able to handle the gore of this novel. Yet, as you can see, I gave it four stars. This is not your run of the mill paranormal novel. There is no real romance in it. These are animals with an animal's uncontrollable instinct for survival. Think: March of the Penguins, only the penguins eat humans instead of fish. If your an advit fish lover, you wouldn't hold it against the penguins for making fish their meal.
Sorry, I know you wouldn't know, but I am grinning right now. Of course I'm being over the top, how can you not when you just spent an entire evening and into the night reading a book about dragons screwing and eating humans? Half way through I wished I could have kept a tally on how many people were killed and/or eaten. And how many were screwed, killed, and eaten. I know it sounds grewsome and disgusting and yet for some bazaar, strange, sick reason I liked it. It was different than anything I have ever read with dragons or other paranormal creatures. Oh, no, no pansy dragons in this novel. These guys are for real! HA!
If you have a strong stomach and want something realistically orginal and yet fatastical I definitely recommend it.

Book Description
Jeff Vaughan, a world-weary telepath employed by the spaceport on Bengal Station, discovers a sinister cult that worships a mysterious alien god. The Church of the Adoration of the Chosen One uses drugs to commune with the ultimate - and murder to silence those who oppose their beliefs. Together with Indian cop Jimmy Chandra, Vaughan's investigations take him to the colony planet of Verkerk's World and the terrible secret of the extraterrestrial Vaith. . . . Meanwhile, in Thailand, street-girl Sukara dreams of being reunited with her long-lost sister on Bengal Station. She meets Osborne, a telepath posing as a businessman with his own secrets, who promises to take her away from her life of prostitution in Bangkok. They travel to Bengal Station, and there Sukara learns of her sister's fate, and unwittingly leads Osborne to his target - Jeff Vaughan. The story follows Vaughan as his mistrust of his fellow humans is overturned by his growing feelings for Thai street-girl Sukara, one of the few good people he's ever encountered in a life of reading cynical, jaded minds. Bengal Station is exotic noir - Blade Runner meets Chinatown - with characters the reader will care about, fast action, and thought-provoking ideas.
Eric Brown, born in 1960, is the author of sixteen books, including science fiction novels, collections and books for children. He is married to the writer and medievalist Finn Sinclair and they live in Haworth, West Yorkshire, England.
Customer Reviews:
action packed space opera .......2004-07-28
Rotating above the Earth is Bengal Station the jumping point to Earth from the colonies. Jeff Vaughn, a telepath employed by the station to scan people for contraband, is a lonely man. The only person he connects to is Tiger, a young beggar, who lies dying from an overdose of a drug called Rhapsody, a controlled substance imported from one of the colony worlds. A new religion, The Church of the Adoration of the Chosen Ones, originated on one of the colony worlds, the same world that brought in Rhapsody, is actually seeking converts on the station before they go to Earth.
Vaughan becomes suspicious when his boss finds excuses for him not to scan ships coming in from Verkerk's world. It seems something irregular, perhaps illegal, is happening on Verkerk's world and it is linked to the drug and the religion. What he discovers when the planet yields its secrets could change the course of humanity unless Vaughan finds a way to stop the aliens who are on a mission of their own.
The protagonist is a world-weary man who is semi-suicidal, unable to deal with the darkness he reads in each human's soul. The only reason he does not kill himself is that, in spite of himself, he cares about humanity and does not want the aliens to destroy the human race. Eric Brown's Bengal Station is reminiscent of Star Trek Nine with its space station relationships. Readers will enjoy the action packed space opera and look for future works from this talented author.

One of the best storytellers of our time!.......2007-07-28
This was required reading for a graduate course in the Humanities. This is a great audio book series by a very engaging storyteller. Joseph Campbell describes the monomyth in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces as embodying all the necessary elements of the hero's journey in the many myths in human history. Campbell discovered through extensive research that humankind shares a universal monomyth in its various religions and legends especially pertaining to the creation of the world and humankind. Campbell borrowed the term monomyth from James Joyce's book Finnegan's Wake. Campbell's intuitive insight in human myth proves that for thousands of years these myths display a certain standard structure, which he summarizes beautifully in his book.
A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a
region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there
encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back
from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons
on his fellow man.
There are at least four major stages that a monomyth has however, in his book, Campbell goes on to describe seventeen stages that some monomyth's posses. The four stages making up the cycle of a monomyth are "passage: separation-initiation-return:" In the passage stage the hero is summoned to journey or embark on an adventure by some kind of event that takes place or from a message, he receives. The hero may embark on this passage willingly or reluctantly. During the separation stage, the hero meets with a mentor or wise man who gives the hero either an amulet or some words of wisdom to be of help to the hero on the adventure. It is during this stage that the hero will go through his first transformation, also known as "crossing the first threshold," as he crosses over to another world or dimension leaving behind the old world. In the initiation stage, the hero goes through several trials or tests. The hero often receives help in these ordeals along the way by allies or from a supernatural force. As the hero completes these ordeals successfully, he proves himself more worthy to continue the adventure. Most importantly, during this stage the hero must pass through a major ordeal that will expand his consciousness, and thereby change his character forever. Often, this ordeal entails the death of an ally or enemy. Once the hero successful accomplishes his ordeal he is rewarded with a gift, it could be intrinsic like the "holy grail, or it can be new found knowledge to better the world with. The last stage the hero travels is that of the return whence he came. Often the hero will undergo further trials on his return before he is permitted to cross the threshold back to the world he left. During his return journey, the hero will use his newfound wisdom or gift to make a safe return home. Once home the gift is used to cure some ill in the hero's home or to impart new wisdom to his neighbors.
Campbell points to the significance of the monomyth in the fact that it describes the cycle that Moses, Jesus, and Buddha had gone through according to their religious adherents. This is not to mention the hundreds of other monomyths told throughout human history. The monomyth proves that humankind shares a common creation DNA in a sense. The monomyth is the perfect vehicle for one to study the Humanities by.
Recommended reading for anyone interested in history, psychology, philosophy.
It's like finding your way home.......2007-06-12
To all those who keep looking for help to understand what it means to be human; to all who have the mental tolerance for the presently unconventional; to the brave of mind who can accept what Campbell offers about existence: welcome home. And, don't quit looking.

Delicious recipes.......2006-11-24
This book is designed for entertaining, and it does a good job of covering the basics involved with being a good host. The great thing is that the recipes are simple to make and they are delicious! I highly recommend this book for any kitchen.
Up late at night worrying about that next dinner party? .......2006-08-09
Never do that again! This book will calm your troubled seas. From how to plan and organize to how to fold that napkin, it is all in here! No more white knuckles for me! Thanks Betty Crocker!
Nice Menus and Meals.......2003-05-22
First off, if you haven't bought "Betty Crocker Cooking Basics" buy that one first. It has much simpler all-American meals in it than this one. You will probably find this book to be the most useful if you are putting on a party because it breaks down complete menus, prep-time timelines (ex: 2 days before the party do ____), entertaining tips, and decorating tips. It also has a fantastic section on estimating the food requirements of large groups of people.
I do think that this is a good guide for any kitchen (especially beginning cooks) because it has one of the most easy-to-read formats that I have found; it is full of lovely pictures, techniques, and nutritional info. The best plus, however, was probably the fact that you don't need to have 50 million ingredients to do the recipes.
Ease of use.......2002-01-01
I received this as a gift and was going to give it to my son. Then I looked at it and decided I could not give it away so am ordering one for him. Very easy to use, clear cut..shows what you need and then the recipe in a clear, concise format. Many helpful tips throughout the book. Don't be fooled by the title. I do not entertain much anymore but am enjoying the recipes. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Description:
Large-scale combustion systems, such as thermal power plants, emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, which can increase global warming. A molten salt redox combustion system was proposed to recover pure carbon dioxide exhausted from the combustion of fossil fuels. This system is composed of two successive processes by using reactions occurring in a molten salt. The molten salt is the mixture of the molten alkali metal sulfates and carbonates. The sulfate ions oxidize the fuels in first processes, being changed to reductive species such as sulfide ions. In this process, carbon dioxide and water are exclusively exhausted. The reductive species of sulfur compounds are oxidized to regenerate the sulfate ions by air in the second process. In this study, these above two processes were tried by using molten [(Na^+)"0"."5,(K^+)"0"."5]"2[(CO"3^2^-)"0"."9,(SO"4^2^-)"0"."1] alternatively. The oxidation of carbon monoxide as fuel by sulfate ions and the regeneration of sulfate ions by air were investigated in the temperature range of 700-950^oC, respectively. These reactions were exothermic. The rate of the regeneration of the sulfate ions was extremely high. During the oxidation of carbon monoxide, the reaction was first order in carbon monoxide with an activation energy of 101kJmol^-^1. The optimum condition to recover pure carbon dioxide on practical operation was discussed.

Celebrities such as Gordon Mac Rae, Billy Daniels, Jane Powell, Melba Moore, Johnnie Ray and Donald O'Connor permeate these recollections of a show business spouse.
Golf tournaments with Bob Hope, watching a football game with Joe Di Maggio, a concert arrangement debut in front of an audience of 10,000 in New York, chatting with Pete Fountain at his club in New Orleans, and a helpful President of the United States carrying musical charts into the dressing room. These are just some of the experiences Gail Munford had in life on the road with her musical director/ arranger husband, Gordon Munford.
