Book Description
Years after the tragic death of her first husband, Nance Able remarries and begins a new life in the West with Ned, a school principal whose quiet charm lulls her to contentment. A scientist tracking rattlesnakes in the wilderness of Hells Canyon, Idaho, Nance courts natural dangers, believing that conquering such risk will protect her from further grief. But at home, she is unaware that her husbands secret proclivities are emerging. When Nances younger, errant sister Meredith moves to town, Ned can no longer suppress the terrifying mysteries of his past, and together the sisters must find the strength to survive his love.
Book Description
The new novel by the award-winning author of Winter RangeWhen tragedy leaves her life in shambles, Nance flees her Wisconsin hometown and its reminders of grief, creating a new life in the West. She is a scientist, specializing in rattlesnakes and attrition rates in dens, believing that "you can overcome fear, control the level of risk by being prepared, by knowing your subject." Now with a home in Lewiston, Idaho, overlooking the Snake River, and her marriage to Ned Able, a grade school principal, Nance finally feels at peace. Then an unexpected visit from her wayward sister Meredith revives old family conflicts, and resurrects a secret life that has long lain dormant in Ned. While Nance and Meredith mend their relationship, Ned's other nature begins to emerge, transforming him in ways that Nance denies, until, with the help of her sister, she is made to see what lies beneath the skin. But neither can predict how far Ned will go to hide his past, or where his frightening memories will lead him as he searches out an object for his obsession. Claire Davis's debut novel, Winter Range, established her as a powerful voice in American writing. Season of the Snake extends her scope with a dramatic story, a vividly evoked setting, and an unforgettable group of characters.

I Kept Waiting..........2007-08-04
I kept waiting for this story to pick up. The first third of the book is painfully boring. The author goes on and on "descriptively" saying nothing. It does pick up considerably as the book gets into the later sections, but by then it's almost too late. There is no rhyme nor reason as to why the husband demonstrates such violence, and the passages about the snakes, while educational, don't really have much bite (pun intended). While definitely not the worst book I have ever read, I was glad to finish this book so I could move on to something more interesting. My mom read "Season of the Snake" before giving it to me and she felt the same way. Two sideways thumbs from both of us.
Beautifully Crafted!.......2007-01-24
Having read "Winter Range" and found it lacking, I only read "Season of the Snake" on the recommendation of a family member. I was thrilled by it!! Her previously dark writing has found real focus and structure. "Season of the Snake" does a great job getting you to care about the characters, and although you may think you know where it is going... it either takes you there in such a unique fashion, or twists how far and where it goes... that the whole ride is a joy. Truly got under my skin and sucked me in. Great Book!
Creepy, but kept me guessing........2006-11-12
The novel had a slow, somewhat unfocused start, but I kept with it, and ultimately was rewarded with an entertaining, if sometimes uncomfortable, experience. Some graphic scenes were a bit much for me, as it was clear early on the husband was a monster. The love-hate relationship between the sisters gave the story depth and dimension, and the prose describing the surrounding Snake River/Palouse scenery was exquisite. Overall, a fulfilling read with an ending that still leaves you squirming in your seat a bit.
Terrific read!.......2006-04-21
Last night I stayed up too late finishing Claire Davis' "Season of the Snake," it was that good. There was no way I was going to sleep until I found out what happened. Exquisitely creepy, enthralling novel set in Idaho and Eastern Washington State with the Snake River playing a part. The life and times of a herpetologist, her husband and her problematic sister. Perfection. Can't wait to see what Davis gives us next.
An unpleasant experience.......2005-03-29
This book preys on your mind - that nagging fear that someone you've known for years is some "thing", entirely different, and it viscerally demonstrates how much we crave certainty and closure, even through the final pages. The natural creepiness of snakes, caves, random violence, dirty bars in forgotten places, voyeurism, it's all in here as well. Davis achieves this fearful effect with great skill, and when you're able to stop thinking about all this nastiness and overlook a few plot points that push the boundaries of credibility, you realize that she can really write, too. The problem, if one can call it that, is that it makes for an unpleasant reading experience. When I was done, I had no desire to call up a friend and say "read this book." I just wanted to take a hot shower, get in bed and make it all go away.
Also, the unsettling sections of the novel overwhelm the development of the sisters' relationship, leaving it curiously lopsided. And finally, Snake River country is big and powerful. It often seems incongruous with a novel that, to me at least, is much more about what lurks in the small hidden crevices of the brain.

A Good Gift.......2006-11-10
I am not a fan of Michael Moorcock by any means, but after trying for several days to purchase this book from a local Barnes and Noble Booksellers for a friend's birthday and suffering constant transfers for placing "prank calls"...I found that Amazon was the easiest alternative. I placed my order and received the book promptly with standard shipping, there was no damage to the pages, and a hard cover edition cost less than the paperback that I was trying to get from B&N.
As for the contents itself, I have no idea, but my friend says it's a great read.
A new ending.......2006-08-25
This book is a kind of a third ending of the Champion saga (the first two ones were The Quest for Tanelorn and Dragon in the Sword), with Erekose appearing again (although playing a very small part in the story, but without it, the novel wouldn't correspond to the whole Saga). Also this book lets us know something about the pre-history of John Daker, and the pre-history of his wife. I think it may be recommended to the readers who don't like the 3rd John Daker novel (i.e., Dragon in the Sword), because it differs from that one very much, portraying quite another Mr. Daker to us.
The book is written not in the usual Moorcock manner, it has a much simpler language, so if you have been sometimes embarrassed by Moorcock's style (those long words of Latin origin which are not easy to understand), this book may seem easier to read for you. As for me, I'm longing for the good old manner in which the classical Elric stories have been written.
Moorcock just as lively as ever.......2006-02-15
Far from being played out, Moorcock writes with as much power as ever. Certainly he's lost the adolescent obsessions which powered his early work and made his Stormbringer so overwhelming to those of us who began reading his work in their late teens and early twenties, but as The Vengeance of Rome, his latest book, shows, he's still full of energy and invention. The problem with writing riffs on old themes, of course, is that the mature writer has to use a form developed by his old self. In my view Moorcock has solved this problem by shifting attention away from the angst of his central character to the point of view of a rather mature little girl (clearly based on Alice). A good, intelligent read by someone who has thought long and hard about the relations between romance and reality.
Solid, yet flawed.......2005-11-23
The final book of the newest Elric trilogy, The White Wolf's Son, simultaneously shows Moorcock's increasing complexity of his vision and waning interest in his signature character. While the other characters of the novel are drawn vividly and distinctively, Elric himself seems consigned to have become a caricature rather than an icon. Fortunately, Moorcock easily overcomes the threadbare nature of his favorite subject, keeping the book a satisfying read throughout.
Heavy references to other books and characters in the long-running Eternal Champion series makes this book both fun for long-time readers and inscrutable to those new to Moorcock's body of work.
Lives up to expectations.......2005-09-22
I've been reading Moorcock for over 20 years and he just keeps getting better. If you are looking for traditional sword-and-sorcery fantasy like the original series, you will be disappointed. Moorcock has moved past that, so enjoy it for what it is. This is still fantasy, but it's expanded so that it's new and fresh (unlike most fantasy being published). He also takes time to criticize religious fanatics, and the current administration of George Bush. A brilliant author who deserves a wider audience.

So changeable.......2006-06-17
Bounty hunters Johnny Alpha and Middenface are chasing an escaped mutant criminal across the galaxy. The criminal, Indenti Kit, can change bodies, faces and voices with anyone he chooses, making it extremely difficult for Johnny and Middenface to find him. Even if they run across him, how can they be sure it's him? Johnny and Middenface of course, have their own particular talents. For instance, Johnny can look into someone's brain and know what he or she is thinking.
The chase takes them to Miltonia, a planet that is home to both mutants and normal human beings, commonly referred to as "norms." What they find there is rather startling. Instead of the utopia they'd always heard about, it is a hotbed of fighting between the norms and the mutants. This is surprising because Miltonia was founded on the premise that all norms and mutants are equal and should be treated as such. Instead, all that has broken down. This development increases the difficulty of the bounty hunters - Johnny and Middenface face. Johnny and Middenface hear that Indenti Kit is living with the rebelling norms, called Salvationists, and they must go to the hidden camp of these rebels and locate him. Several surprising incidents occur. Nothing is as it seems. The war is on.
STRONTIUM DOG 5: A FISTFUL OF STRONTIUM by Jaspre Bark and Steve Lyons is an action packed, thrilling novel of life in another sphere. There are also startling similarities between what happens in the world today versus what is happening in this new, futuristic world. It was a fast and enjoyable read. Certainly science fiction readers will love this book.

THE DOGS ARE BACK AGAIN!.......2005-12-02
This is the 5th volume in the Strontium Dog series and this time finds bounty hunting partners Johnny Alpha and Middenface on the trail of Kit Jones, AKA "Identi Kit", a dangerous mutant who escaped a maximum security prison and has the ability to shape change into anyone he comes in contact with, right down to their voice. On Tulium 9 Alpha learns by interrogating the corpse (and this part was truly hilarious, if not a bit gruesome as well) of the leader of the Chameleon gang that Kit, the gang's former leader, is on the planet of Miltonia with the intention of killing Moosehead, a retired SD Agent who had captured Kit and sent him to prison. This all came after a terrific battle with the chameleon gang that involved time-slowing weapons and some extremely bizarre mutant gang members.
Kit and Middenface are apprehensive about going to Miltonia. This planet is unique in that it's the only planet in the Universe where the Mutants outnumber the norms and life a life of relative peace and tranquility. They try and avoid the Miltonia red tape and conceal themselves within a merchant vessel but are discovered and then spend hours being interrogated by the immigration officials who are convinced that the two bounty hunters have really come to Miltonia to live! Their freedom is gained when another former friend of theirs, no less than the President of Miltonia, orders them freed. Turns out their former war buddy from the Mutant War is now "President Ooze", a living mush of protoplasm with eyes who communicates telepathically with another mutant called Nosejob.
They soon learn the horrible truth...Identi Kit has already made his way to Miltonia and assassinated Moosehead. Not only that, but the mutant has thrown in with a band of Norm supremacist terrorists who call themselves the Salvationists. They've been stirring up trouble for sometime and have kidnapped a mutant known as the Consoler, who had the unique ability to remove the mutations from people, making them normal. The Consoler has been brainwashed to believe that mutants are evil and that curing them is the right thing to do. This could all lead to yet another Mutant War. Now Alpha and Middenface are given the task of trying to find the Salvationists secret base in the mountains that is protected by electromagnetic ore deposits which render technology useless. They'll have to go in with just old fashioned clubs and their own killer instincts.
I loved a Fistful of Strontium, the first book I've read in the series. The characters of Alpha and Middenface have a wonderful chemistry together, much like buddy cops. Middenface handles the comic relief with his Scottish accent and his fear of space travel (he gets stone drunk when he has to travel!). The action starts off quickly with the encounter against the chameleon gang and keeps moving at breakneck speed from there. The book was plotted very well with several surprising twists. Great Stuff! I look forward to reading more!

Interesting..........2005-11-07
Johnny Alpha's eyes emit alpha rays letting him see through objects and into people's very souls. His friend and partner, Archibald "Middenface" McNulty, is the brawn with a Scottish accent. They were once part of the Mutant War. Now they are bounty hunters.
Johnny and Middenface are currently after an escaped felon named "Identi Kit". Kit has the ability to absorb DNA patterns of ANY mutant he touches. He is then able to reshape himself to resemble them, right down to the voice. Kit's first act of freedom is to get revenge on Moosehead McGuffin, the bounty hunter who captured him earlier. Moosehead is on the planet Miltonia, where mutants are the majority and normals are the minority. Johnny and Middenface must deal with an underground group of fanatics, "norm supremacists", while hunting their deadly prey. But hunting someone who can actually seem to be ANYBODY is not easy. Not easy at all.
**** This series is different from most. This particular novel is full of little twists, especially the ending! If you like the X-Men, you will love this novel. The big difference is that these mutants are not stuck on one planet. They can move throughout the galaxy. ****

Best Cookbook Purchased.......2002-03-20
First, Thank You Amazon for your speedy delivery. I had this book in 3 days.
I purchased this book not to become a vegetarian but to learn to cook healthier foods. I must say that after reading and trying the recipes Lyndsay and Ariane did a wonderful job. This book actually informs the reader on the health benefits of a more natural diet using whole grains and more fruits and vegetables. They do not say you have to be a vegetarian they just give you information and guidelines for a healthier lifestyle.
If anyone has tried Vegetarian cookbooks before (as I have), and thrown them out because they were complicated with ingredients you can't find, try this book, I had almost everything in my kitchen already, there are no funky things to go out and find, and my sons (9 and 11) have decided they like soy milk better than regular milk. Best book I have ever purchase. Thanks goes to Lyndsay and Ariane.
Get this book!.......2000-08-18
We got a copy of this book in the early '90's, and it has some excellent, tasty, easy-to-prepare recipes. I'm buying another copy to replace the original, because we've literally worn it out from use. An excellent resource.
Pleasantly surprised! This book is both fun and informative.......2000-02-15
I have tried many of the recipes in this book and have enjoyed almost all of them. The writers seem as thou they enjoy cooking and eating the food they create, which makes it easy to follow. I have started using this recipe book more and more....wish all cookbooks were this easy for those of us who are terrible in the kitchen.
I found this book to be both entertaining and informative........1998-08-24
I was pleasantly surprised at how the information was presented in this cookbook. The authors expressed their desire to create a cookbook that contained not only great recipes but also useful information presented in an interesting manner. They have succeeded. Although I am not a strict vegetarian, I can say that I am not much of a meat eater. This book has helped me with ideas on how to use meat substitutes in a way that is tempting even for my meat-eater husband. All I can say is Bon Appetit!

Not worth the single star I have to give it.......2007-09-18
I purchased this book based on the reviews here. I was totally disappointed with every project in this book. I think the only thing missing is a crocheted toilet paper cover with a frog on it. They do not have that in this book, but every other cliche craft crochet item is in it.
I returned it the next day.
NOT UP TO PAR.......2007-09-04
LOVED 100 KNITTING PROJECTS SO I WAS EXPECTING THIS BOOK TO BE JUST AS GOOD, IT IS NOT. THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD BOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO IS NEW TO CROCHETING, BUT FOR THOSE WITH MORE EXPERIENCE - TAKE A PASS ON THIS ONE.
It's a keeper.......2007-09-02
I love this book really, it is full of a variety of things to crochet and it does certainly fit my rule of more than 7 things in it that I would consider making in the future. I would also put this book on my "encouragement list" meaning that this would be a really good book to give to a new crocheter as it would show all the different directions you can really take your crochet.
So-so.......2007-08-09
I bought this book with great expectations, but was rather disappointed. There is a wide range of clothing patterns and so on included, but most are just too weird, trendy, or revealing for my taste. My favorite designs were the two thread bedspreads included, and it was too bad that the editors or designer forgot to include directions as to how many motifs down and across for the Rose one; guess I'll have to figure that out myself. There are some cute backback designs, also...I could recommend paying no more than $6 used.
Crochet Book.......2007-08-01
I bought this as a gift for a friend to they could finish a project, so I can't really say how much use they got out of it. I personally would have had a lot of fun with it if my hands would have taken the abuse at my age! Worth the price for certain.

Very good resource for filet.......2007-06-05
this book includes very good basic instructions, including how to increase. There are lots of beautiful patterns ranging from florals, scenics, geometrics and some for children. Included are curtains, table covers, edgings, and many others. One can easily adapt the filet charts to uses other than those shown. Photos and charts are very clear.
Great for beginners.......2002-02-14
I have crocheted before but everytime I tried to follow instructions on how to filet, I couldn't understand them. This explained it very well and I was quickly making very nice projects. Filet works rapidly and you can really make things quickly.
Inspiring.......2001-12-28
The projects in this book are what I would call 'sophisticated country' in style. I have found the directions to be excellent. I made a doily from this book as my very first project having just learned to crochet. I have made an edging from the book to adorn a linen baptismal gown. I know I will choose projects from this book for many years to come, and have spent many hours just enjoying the pictures.
One of the best filet books on the market.......2001-06-06
This is the one of the most detailed books on filet crochet that I have ever read. It has background, history, comparisons, patterns. The pattern section has a good variety to choose from and are not just doilies. The instructions are excellent and the patterns are just beautiful. The introduction and general "how to" instructions are detailed and have large illustrations. There is a conversion chart of hook sizes, as well as US and British terms for chart symbols and abbreviations. There are complete instructions on how to read charts, do increasing and decreasing, make turns and calculate patterns. It has a great "first project" with one the best illustrated directions I've seen for how to work the stitches and where to actually place your hook for stitches and turns. I would recommend this book regardless of whether you are already into filet crochet or want to learn how to do filet crochet. Chris did an excellent job.
Book doesn't give thread recommendations and yardage.......2001-01-03
This is a wonderful book, but a new edition could be more useful if it listed the thread size and amounts in yards used for the projects as illustrated. While the book lists thread weights in grams, the weight can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Before you do a project, make sure to crochet a gage swatch and make estimates based on the swatch.

Book Description
Larry Gatlin was a brash and outspoken man who was dogged by the press and continually at odds with the music industry. He would disappear for days, bingeing on cocaine and alcohol. By the mid-1980's, the reckless lifestyle caught up with him. Returning to his faith, he found freedom, not only from drug and alcohol addiction, but also from the demons that drove him to determine his worth by the weight of his success. This is Larry Gatlin's inspiring story, told as only this ole boy from Texas can tell it, rich with reminiscences, humor, insight, and honesty.
Customer Reviews:
"God is in charge,not you.Be at peace,Larry.".......2005-03-02
This is a wonderful book about and by a person who really understands what life is all about.Maybe Larry would take exception with my saying that.Rather than thinking that he has all the answers,he has a deep faith in his God,and tries to live a good life and knows the rest is up to God.
He shows us that the life of a Superstar in the music business ,while being extremely arduous,it is one's decision to pursue it and has many rewards.Obviously, while money has to be a big part of it,it is the pursuit of your dreams ,joys and disappointments and the experiences and friendships that make it all worthwhile.
The great sacrifices and heavy load to keep things together, especially the life on the road and being away from family;can take its heavy toll.As we sit back and enjoy people like the Gatlins,we should keep in mind the effort they put forth to entertain and in many ways inspire us.
From this book we see a side of Larry's life that people outside the business can't really understand. When he talks about other stars ,Mickey Rooney for example,we see he is in great awe of him.Even more than that ,how impressed Larry was in finding that Mickey was so impressed with him.Larry may be a 'big star' but he carried that mantle with an even greater humility.
Maybe ,All the Gold is not in California,in a bank,in the middle of Beverly Hills;a lot is in the hearts and souls of people like Larry and others like him.
People of faith will understand what Larry is saying.Hopefully those without faith, might see what strength faith can be in good and difficult times.
A very good and inspiring book.
The Most Honest Writer-Larry Gatlin...........2003-01-01
Books rarely hold my attention. Can't tell you how many I've started and put down. I started Larry Gatlin's book a few days ago and can't stop reading. Half-way thru the book, his re-telling of successes and failures have me grabbing for a kleenex every few pages. His reliance on God and coming back to God's grace are touching/inspiring. He gives God the credit for every moment that counts in his life that will connect to another open door (try to count how many times he writes, "another God moment.") His writing style is energetic, to the point, down to earth, honest - just as his personality is on stage. (I saw the Gatlin Brothers in concert in Kansas City 12/28/02). This book makes the reader rejoice as we watch him overcome alcoholism and substance abuse. Who wouldn't want Larry to win over these addictions, for his sake and his family's sake back home. He doesn't overdo the details but gives the full picture in few words. Keep the music coming Gatlin Brothers!
This book should still be in the stores!.......2002-10-26
I'm a Larry Gatlin fan. His book is written as well as his songs. I was captivated by his life story which he described in such down to earth, honest words. And it is so funny.
What a talent!
A MUST READ, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A GATLIN FAN!.......2000-04-25
I've been around the music business for the past 30 years, I have NEVER seen an artist be this honest and open about the rise and the fall of ones career. Larry lays it ALL on the line and this should serve as a wake up call for those that can not handle "life in the fast lane". Larry's story is 24KT solid gold. A real must read from someone who has certainly been there, done that.
The Truth About Drugs and Alchol.......1998-11-08
This book is the greatest thing Larry Wayne has ever written.I've been listening to his music over half of my life and watched all the things he wrote about in this book happen and he told the truth , he didn't try to make himself look like some hero even though he really is. If you have a family member that is fighting the battle with drugs this is a MUST READ it will give you hope. Thanks Larry Wayne for sharing your story, you saved a life.
