Book Description
Secresy was Eliza Fenwick's only work for adultsa fact that may help to explain why this extraordinary novel has been so thoroughly overlooked. On one level this is a book that presents fascinating challenges to traditional structures of class and gender. Whereas Mr. Valmont, the villain of the piece, rejects merely the surface forms of fashionable society, the story of his niece Sibella and her friend Caroline implicitly rejects the substance as well as the trappings of a system that rested on class privilege and on female dependence. Secresy is also, though, a remarkable novel of human relationships: of sexuality (Sibella's pregnancy is the occasion for the secrecy that gives the book its title), and of romantic love, but also the female friendship between Sibella and Caroline that is very much at the heart of the book. The relationshipsand the grand themesare expressed through an epistolary technique through which Fenwick (in the editor's words) shows "a breadth of sympathy which can find comedic pleasure even in what is disapproved."

Kingship, sovereignty, and the making of a true king lie at the heart of this second book in the Song of Albion trilogy. Herein lie passion and power, heartbreak and hope—the fate of Albion and the destiny of the long-awaited champion: Silver Hand.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-27
The Silver Hand is the middle book in Stephen R. Lawhead's Song of Albion trilogy, and, in general, is more involved with the young bloke that becomes Lugh in Albion, and how that happens. He has learned to be a warrior.
It details the choices he has to make about fighting, violence, and who to protect and how to protect them when you can, giving shelter and aid to those that need it.
Awesome.......2007-06-27
I love Trilogies and when I saw all three of the Song of Albion series on sale together I decided to give them a try. I had never read SRL before, but the concept of this series really caught my attention. Needless to say I was hooked. I have since read just about everything SRL has written, since March!
As may have been mentioned before, the book takes a little while to get started (most Lawhead's books do), but it was all necessary backround and character development. I guess he could have just created a "time machine", but that wouldn't have been anywhere nearly as interesting a storyline Lawhead has created here. Part Fantasy, part historical fiction/speculation, I found this whole series both entertaining and educational and really created a good foundation for his other Celtic based storylines (i.e. Pendragon series, Hood, Celtic Crusades etc.)
I would definetly start with the first book, The Paradise War, since this is a "true" trilogy, meaning it was meant to be a series right from the start and one book builds on the next with no "real" ending until the final chapter of the last book. The good thing is, the whole trilogy is complete and you don't have to wait for the next book in the series to be written. I read one book right after the other in about a week. I don't know if it's just because this is first series of Lawhead's I read or what, but this is still my favorite SRL series, one which no doubt I will re-read more than once.
Great book.......2007-06-09
This is the 2nd in a series of 3...love the series. Highly rec. if you like Celtic era.
Better Than the First.......2005-04-15
After the somewhat disappointing first book in this series, The Silver Hand turned to be quite good. The plot is exciting, the action is non-stop, and the Celtic lore was very interesting. Moreover, there were moments in this novel when I had to put the book down because could believe what had just happened. People are maimed, women raped and murdered, entire nations put to the sword. In fact, there were times when I thought the violence depicted went too far, but I also felt it was in keeping with the setting and alternate time period so it had to he accepted. If I had to make one complaint about the novel, it's that the ending was tied up a little too neatly, but not so bad that I didn't thoroughly enjoy the novel.
Continues to satisfy........2005-04-08
So many times a sequel doesn't satisfy, but this one does. Lawhead's story is interesting and exciting, and extremely well-written. I'm learning a lot about ancient celtic culture, too. He's done his research well.

Her code name is Sparta. Her beauty veils a mysterious past and abilities of superhuman dimension -- the product of advanced biotechnology.
Much excitement has arisen throughout the galaxy over the exploration mission to Jupiter's moon, Amalthea. Led by the renowned Professor J.Q.R. Forster, the dangerous expedition will lead its members to the surface of this strange moon -- and beyond. It is Sparta's mission to monitor the trip on the part of the Board of Space Control.
Her task becomes more threatening when Sir Randolph Mays, Forster's rival and nemesis, "accidentally" crash-lands on Amalthea's surface. Far from innocent, Mays has a plan for laying claim to Forster's discoveries, and only Sparta is able to prevent sabotage. But what is Mays really after? And how will they all react to the discovery of an alien life-form...?
This breathtaking adventure brings together the genius of Arthur C. Clarke and the talents of distinguished science-fiction writer Paul Preuss.

And if you look out the window on your left you will see Amalthea.......2005-07-27
With this book, the series is starting to regain the momentum it had during the first two books. Sparta has reconciled with her feelings toward her biotechnical engineering and with those responsible. Preuss spends a good deal of time wrapping up a lot of loose ends from the fouth book. But, he also delves back into the plot of the entire series, reminding the reader why s/he finished the last book. The reader is pulled back into the mystery and intrigue of the alien culture called Culture X. We have reached the fuzzy edge of knowledge that will hopefully crystalize in the last book.
Top sci-fi mystery, interesting characters.......2002-03-11
Arthur C. Clarke's component in this series is the inclusion of a number of his interesting short stories as the subplots with very little alteration of the details. (The original book titles were actually the names of the stories, eg. Breaking Strain.) These stories are seamlessly incorporated into the whole work.
What is added by Preuss is the style and setting - Sparta, a fragile but superhuman woman who has lost her past, searches for the people who made her what she is. In doing so, she becomes involved in the situations created in Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction. The "Venus Prime" series maps out her journey (as well as serving up great stories by Clarke). Preuss peppers the books with nice details of life in the near future (like logical extensions, interesting-but-plausible technology, and so on).
If you're looking for the original short stories, several appeared in the out-of-print collection "The Sentinel ; masterworks of science fiction and fantasy" (the title story is also interesting as the origin of Clarke's novel "2001 a Space Odyssey").
Sparta Is My Hero!.......2000-06-28
I just finished The Diamond Moon. Thoroughly enjoyed this fifth volume. I have always been a huge fan of Arthur C. Clarke and was skeptical when realizing he was a co-author, but have been extremely pleased with the masterful blend of true science fiction with an involving story line using mystery and engaging character development that I assume to be of Paul Preuss' design. This is not a book to be read on it's own, but to be enjoyed from the beginning and read through the end - (I'm going to get Volume 6 now).
I have been hooked right from the start - accolades to Paul Preuss and Arthur C. Clarke!
Book Description
By the former Bishop of Edinburgh, Richard Holloway, Looking in the Distance celebrates the possibilities of life, its rewards and profound challenges, with a fresh, humane optimism that is both passionate and pragmatic. Fearlessly pondering life’s end, Holloway examines how doubts too often paralyze people. He explains, “A sentence is not finished till it has a full stop, and every life needs a dying to complete it … Our brief finitude is but a beautiful spark in the vast darkness of space. So we should live the fleeting day with passion and, when the night comes, depart from it with grace.” Written in the context of organized religion’s structural difficulties, Looking in the Distance is a highly personal and meditative work that helps us better understand the myriad ways in which the human search for wholeness and healing can be approached. Accessible, funny, inquisitive and ever hopeful, it will inspire all who read it.

Customer Reviews:
Not so quick, and not so easy..........1998-09-05
This cookbook is NOT quick and NOT easy. The recipes are in no way easier to do than your average dessert cookbook. In addition to this, the book has other problems. First of all, it lacks a personal tone. There is no "voice of the writer" , no foreword, nor even a few words description of each recipe. Another problem is , that some of these recipes have alredy appeared in other cook books. I wouldn't bother with this book, there are much better chocolate cook books out there!
Book Description
Albert Derolez has developed new terminology for describing the different scripts in this detailed study of handwriting in manuscript books produced in western and central Europe from c.1100 to c.1530. This makes Derolez's survey unique and an ideal tool for all interested in late-medieval book and handwriting culture. The text is illustrated with 600 drawings of letter-forms and 160 photographs of parts of manuscripts reproduced to actual-size.
Customer Reviews:
A Rational Approach.......2007-01-04
Great introduction to a variety of scripts that will be of use to beginners and advanced paleographers alike. Intelligently illustrated and well enough written to read straight through, but so sensibly organized that it makes a great reference work. Its intelligent use of the wealth of information provided in recent decades by the great catalogues of dated manuscripts will make it a standard work for years to come. My only possible reservation regards nomenclature. Derolez is a proponent of a modified version of the system of nomenclature advocated by Lieftinck and urges us not to use such standard terms as Gothic and Anglicana in the usual way. Since this is such a great book, it will strongly influence practice. Still readers might wish to take this recommendation with a pinch of salt.

Over 30 fabulous birdhouses and feeders: a log cabin, a country cottage, a '50s diner, a San Francisco row house, and many others. Full-color photos, detailed patterns, grids, and instructions, plus charts on hole size, perch height, and feeding--and tips on attracting and protecting preferred species. "Some of these projects look so good, you hardly want to put them outside. None of them are difficult to build."--Booklist.
Customer Reviews:
Not for people who want functional bird habitats........1998-09-24
This book caters to people who want to make art rather than basic functional houses to attract wild birds. I just wanted a book where I could get plans for a variety of bird houses that I could make with simple hand tools. I was also looking for more info on the particulars of what species are attracted to a particular type of structure. Sure, the houses in the book are great but I didn't want to make a log cabin or a post-modern art-deco bungalow. I just wanted to learn how to make a few basic houses and learn how to attract and feed wild birds. I had to send the book back.
Ther'll never be another........1998-05-06
After building every house in this book I wanted more. I went in search for something that would give me as much pleasur as this book. I've paid as much as 100 dollars and now have 8 books. What a waste!!! The plans in this book are easy to read and follow and are one of a kind bird houses. please Bruce and David don't leave us hanging.
Book Description
The Spanish-style architecture of Southern California's seaside estates, canyon villas, and courtyard bungalows is central to its romantic image, one that has traditionally evoked a Mediterranean paradise. The details of this inexhaustively rich style-- ornate wrought iron and wood balconies, colorful tiles, graceful arches, and palm-dotted gardens-- reflect the region's Spanish, Mexican, and southwestern history and culture as well as its popular outdoor lifestyle.
This book showcases Southern California's most historically significant and beautifully preserved Spanish-revival houses of this century. Twenty-one private homes built between 1922 and 1991 are featured in stunning color photography that captures exterior and interior architectural details, Spanish and Mexican antique furnishings and folk art, and lush landscaping and tiled fountains. Among these are the Adamson House in Malibu, with its extraordinary collection of custom tile from Malibu Potteries; the contemporary Greenberg House in Brentwood, by Ricardo Legorreta; The Andalusia Courtyard Apartments in Hollywood; and Casa Pacifica, the former home of Richard Nixon, overlooking the ocean in San Clemente. Brief narratives highlight the history of each building and its design influences on the Spanish-revival movement in California.
The Spanish revival grew in popularity around the turn of the century when many young American architects traveled to Spain, Italy, and Mexico, bringing back sketches and, as the foreword notes, romantic memories of "graceful foliage...small Indian towns...tiled dome and rococo towers." Hundreds of Spanish-style houses, apartments, and bungalows were built throughout Southern California in the following decades, many of them commissioned for movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino.
The Spanish revival is marked by two main phases: the mission revival, which incorporates the white stucco, cloistered patios, tile roofs, and exposed-beam ceilings typical of eighteenth-century California missions; and the more elaborate Mediterranean revival, influenced by Spanish and Italian Renaissance sources, eighteenth-century Spanish plateresque and churrigueresque forms, and Moorish-Andalusian styles.

Casa California: Spanish-Style Houses From Santa Barbara to San Clemente.......2007-03-09
Ideal for learning about the architecture and decortating styles of Spanish style homes. The photgraphs are beautiful. I will rely on this book when I design my new home.
Wonderful Book!.......2006-08-12
Great book! The minute I opened it I knew it was going to be a thrilling trip to another time in California history. Beautiful pictures of grand homes, grounds, and other structures built with Spanish and Mexican influence. If you want just one book covering this subject, this would be the one to buy. Highly recommend.
Images of California Style.......2006-06-09
CSAS CALIFORNIA is one of the coffee table books bound to please not only those who live in California and are eager to study examples of California architecture termed Spanish Revival, but also a fine gift for those out of state friends who wonder if California has any history before 1950!
After an informative foreword by art historian David Gebhard and a tasty introduction by former Architectural Digest editor Elizabeth Jean McMillian the pages of this beautifully designed and elegantly captioned book survey some twenty-one homes built between 1922 and 1991 from Santa Barbara to San Clemente. Not only are the homes photographed formally by photographer Melba Levick, but they also show details of tiles, arches, columns, floors, fixtures and other aspects of design. Each home is then shown with images from the gardens surrounding it as well as the vistas from every vantage. And of special note are comments from the architects (the homes all date from between 1922 and 1991) as well as anecdotes about the current and previous owners.
This book, though published in 1996, remains the most complete examination of the combined Hispanic mission and Mediterranean revival styles now termed Spanish Revival. This is a fine book for those with the California Dream, and for those living it! Grady Harp, June 06
Not that special.......2006-04-18
I didn't glean anything more from this book that I couldn't have gathered on a Sunday drive. Most of the pictures are of exteriors and amazingly enough, none of them really inspires appretiation of this architechtural style. I'm an absolute sucker for Spanish Colonial. There's almost nothing built during the classic era of the 1920's and '30's that I don't swoon over. This book, however, compiled some of the least attractive examples of that style and ends up being thoroughly disappointing. Definitely look elsewhere if your objective is designing interior details that honor the classics.

Customer Reviews:
Very superficial.......2001-02-21
I have to agree with the previous comment, and i gave the book one more star because fortunately i found the book heavily discounted and did not have to pay the inflated list price. The photos are nice, but this doesn't even qualify as a coffee table book (it's too small). The author seemingly hanged out in Southern Spain visiting her bohemian friends and acquaintances and taking many pretty photos. The commentary is quite lame, and the author has a slight pontificating tone when detailing the Spanish decorating styles. I think it was George Bernard Shaw who said that generalization is the prerogative of the weak of mind, or something to that effect. The author falls under that category when stating that the new generations of Spaniards would rather go for plastic, vinyl and Formica and get rid of old, moth-ridden furniture. In her visit to Spain she obviously did not visit any of the multiple antique stores in any major city. Had she seen the prices that some of those moth-ridden pieces of junk command, and in the unlikely event she understands the laws of offer and demand, maybe she would have refrained from making such a blanket statement.
Anyway, this is a superficial book, certainly not worth the list price.
Quite frankly, a waste of my hard-earned money........1999-04-29
Hilliard and Miller do little more than compile an itty-bitty picture booklet of mediocre, vacation-quality photographs of southern Spanish homes, and tout the whole mess "a book on style." Commentary was utterly lacking, and what the authors did include was pseudo-arty and condescending. If I had been able to browse this book at a real bookstore, I never would have bought it, especially at the full price. This book's only value is in teaching the lesson that the online bookshopping experience can mislead the unwary buyer into making a purchase she or he will regret. Read the reviews, and review books you buy! As for this piece of trash, save your money for a REAL book, not a pretend... one like this is.

Book Description
In the world of Gospel Music, the Blackwood Brothers remain unique--legends among their peers, successors and fans alike. No other Christian performers have advanced the gospel music cause more daringly or progressively than the Blackwood Brothers.
Today's thriving Christian music industry, gospel-concert circuit and the GMA are living legacies of their dedicated, enthusiastic, ground breaking vision and persevering hard work and success.
Cemmenced in 1934 with James, the celebrated name of the Blackwood Brothers Quartet continued into the new millenium under the shrewd leadership of Cecil Stamps Blackwood.
An early Sunday School buddy of Elvis Presley, Cecil took on the mantle of baritone when his brother R. W. Blackwood perished in a tragic aircrash in 1954.
This inspiring story reads, amazingly at times, as if it were fiction. It is a human tale full of passionate and heart-warming sentiment, spiritual idealism and "blood, sweat and tears!"
