Sublime Singer - For the title story alone .......2006-11-19
The title story of this work is one of the greatest of all Singer's stories. It tells of a poor aged sick student of philosophy who has dedicated his whole life to understanding Spinoza's thought, and his meeting with a poor, ugly , cleaning lady who comes to care for him in his illness. It is a story which in a way invokes great metaphysical dichotomies , between the Ideal and the Real, between Spirit and Matter(Body). But essentially it is one of the most moving love- stories ever written , a story which somehow finds the divine in the physical, but nonetheless as would be Singer's way, ironically. It's concluding line is one of the most striking I know in all of Literature.
Read and enjoy.
In short stories too, the prose of IBS is mastery.......2006-06-18
- I refer to to the Spanish version of Brugera (?)
I read this book some years ago with some caution, because I have known IBS as a novelist and somehow I had the expectation that the short stories might disappoint me. I was wrong, the prose is unique and the wisdom is there as everything the maestro writes. I feel compelled to learn yiddish right away.
Yiddish folklore --- Tales of Chassidism.......2005-03-29
Singer's father was a Hasid rabbi, and these stores are Jewish, but concern all mankind. These are stories with rich smells, and I can almost smell the chalah bread, and taste the kreplach and macaroons. Set in shtetl, (small communities of Eastern European Jews), there is a conflict of traditional culture and modern Jewish practice.
Not only are there stories of golem, dybbuks, and demons, but even more earthy people as Dr. Fischelson who marries a woman known as Black Dobbe. There is a devil manipulating two perpetual liars, the flamboyant Glicka Genedel, and Reb Yomtom. There is a story of divine providence, where a beggar directs and aspiring chimney sweep, then down the road is paid back. These stories are sure to delight and surprise.
stories of wasrsaw poland and the people.......2003-09-01
each short teaches a lesson in life and provides insight into our own lives. takes place for the most part in warsaw poland
Many good narrations make it worth buying.......2000-07-22
First, I feel I should list the stories included in this little gem of a book:
1)"The Spinoza of Market Street" 2)"The Black Wedding" 3)"A Tale of Two Liars" 4)"The Shadow of a Crib" 5)"Shiddah and Kuziba" 6)"Caricature" 7)"The Beggar Said So" 8)"The Man Who Came Back" 9)"A Piece of Advice" 10)"In the Poorhouse" 11)"The Destruction of Kreshev"
With the exception of "Shiddah and Kuziba", all these stories are set in the same place: the Poland of centuries past, when large Jewish communities lived in the towns near the border with Russia (sometimes Russia itself controlled Poland). These stories involve love, treason, lies, evil, philosophy, lust, sex and much more. Though some stories are not very interesting, I wasn't disappointed by any of them. I will write a little about those I liked the most. "A Tale of Two Liars" has a plot whose simplicity reminds me of the best short narrations by J.L. Borges. Nothing is left at the end for the reader to wonder about: though its written in I.B.Singer's usual style (full of sometimes unneccesary, "by-the-way", details), the plot is so well made and (what else should I say?) complete, that it is as if it were a sphere that you grasp in its entierty with just one hand. "Shadow" is philosophical, with a lot of misanthropic and misogynous ramblings. Its ending, with the ghosts of the two main character coming back to haunt the town, has the same eerie tone as that of Joyce's "The Dead". "Caricature" stands up to its title: an old writer whose self-doubt makes him unable to clear his stinking and dusty room of useless outdated 'rubbish' (old magazines and letters that he has not bothered to open or read) or publish his long-awaited manuscript pokes fun at everything, including his wife, his own life and his obscure supporters. "The Destruction of Kreshev" reminds me of García Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude". It is simply a masterpiece that has to be read, a mix of science-fiction, horror and jewish folklore, a tale of how religious, supposedly upright intellectuals can end corrupting themselves by "too much thinking" and instronspection. "The Man Who Came Back", about a man who is revived only to be possesed by an evil spirit, and "A Piece of Advice", a kind of fable about pessimist, angry people acting as if they were the opposite of that, are also worth reading. "Kreshev" and "Spinoza" are the only stories that appear in "The Collecteded Stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer".

ok not bad.......2005-12-27
First i'll talk about the positive things its cheap and has the 4,5,6 web of magic in the series in one so u dont have to keep on buyin one of the books. I reallly enjoyed reading the seies but i really didnt like spellsinger though the plot and music was awesome. the forth was my fav and it was about emily bonding with a unic and healing it and the 6 was about all the mages facing a challenge to defeat the sorcerress. Now the negitive waas i later bought seperate beacause it started to rip in half but that was sorta my fault but ohh well. I love the series and can't wait for the rest.

Awesome book!!!!!.......2006-06-21
This book is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! I read this book for fun. It was soooo goood!!! I started reading and didn't want to stop. This book has three books in it. I have read all three of them and they are probably my top three favorite books I've ever read! If you are interested in a very adventurous, magical, fiction story, I HIGHLY SUGGEST THIS BOOK!!!!!!
Boundless possibilites.......2005-10-17
The Series starts out with mediocre fantasy and relativly slow, But it has so many possibilites of what could happened I was hooked. The First book is a setup of the intricate story that is slowly revealed to us book by book. I would highly recomend this to anyone willing to give it a chance you won't regret it. 8>

Book Description
Less than a hundred years from now, the forces of law and order crack down on the world of the computer nets. The hip, noir adventurers who get by on wit, bravado, and drugs, and haunt the virtual worlds of the Shadows of cyberspace, are up against the encroachments of civilization. It's time to adapt or die.India Carless, alias Trouble, got out ahead of the feds and settled down to run a small network for an artist's co-op.Now someone has taken her name and begun to use it for criminal hacking. So Trouble returns. Once the fastest gun on the electronic frontier, she had tried to retire-but has been called out for one last fight. And it's a killer.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The society this is set in has advanced virtual reality computer networks, and some of the hackers have organic brain implants that give them an advantage in dealing in this environment.
Because lots of these people started doing corporate espionage, the tech has become outlawed, and Trouble's relationship broke up because of this.
She has to join with her old partner to track down a criminal element on the network.
Slow starter, but worth the trouble.......2005-02-23
This is science fiction of the cyberpunk genre. There is a new technology termed "brainworm" that allows a user to connect to the net and "surf" utilizing only their brain. Think Matrix, but without the robot takeover. Cerise and her ex-lover, Trouble, have to team up in order to stop a copycat hacker from tarnishing Trouble's name. Scott touches on the aspects of new technology, how an older generation can be reluctant to accept it and the problems that can stem from that reluctance and from the new technology itself. The book is somewhat difficult to get into at first, but it quickly comes together and turns into a great page turner.
Excellent read..........2004-01-31
This is a wonderfull book worthy of any Sci-Fi reader's interest. The story moves along well and keeps you guessing until the end. Note the use of neural 'net' precluding 'Strange Days' and 'The Matrix'. I can't wait to read the rest of her books...
Already been done.......2003-01-28
Well, the first thing to mention about this book is the timing. It was published in 1994, I believe, a decade after Neuromancer started the cyberpunk genre. So just about every piece of science and technology Scott uses should be very familiar to readers. (Another similar flaw is that the book is set a century from now, but the computer systems aren't nearly advanced enough).
The story is basically a thriller with some science fiction behind it. Trouble, a retired hacker (a la William Gibson's Case) returns to the business to track down a hacker who is using her name and reputation. She meets up with her ex-girlfriend, and they travel across the country on their mission. This isn't that bad, and Scott's settings and descriptions are vivid and interesting enough, but the whole thing ends up in an action climax and a too-happy ending that doesn't seem real at all.
The virtual reality sequences are another problem. By the time Scott wrote this, personal computers were much more widespread than in Gibson's day, so she's weighed down by reality. Sometimes it's like reading about some guy using a modern computer, which is in no way exciting or interesting. She writes these scenes in present tense, but sometimes forgets and slips into past tense. They are very vivid and dreamlike, so the typographical errors are unfortunate.
The characters weren't bad, except Scott is constantly forcing out feminist and gay issues with absolutely no subtlety. Feminist and gay issues certainly have a place in science fiction, and even in this book, but the symbolism was just too obvious (hackers and homosexuals as the outcasts of society) and at the same time far-fetched (why are all the old hackers gay?). Scott seems very committed to this particular theme, sacrificing the plot of her book, and the scientific believability, to get it out there.
If you've read any book by William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, or Bruce Sterling, Trouble and Her Friends will be too familiar, but remains a solid work in a genre unfairly dominated by men.
Thriller in cyberspace.......2002-04-01
In the not-so-distant future, India Carless, known as Trouble, has left the shadowy world of cyberspace after the American government cracks down on netwalkers like her. A few years later, a new hacker pops up using the name 'Trouble' and begins creating havoc. The original Trouble comes back to clear her name and catch this new upstart, and she reconnects with old friends to do so, including Cerise, the woman she walked out on. Trouble finds a changed cyberworld hiding more dangers than she anticipated. For me the hard sci fi aspects were a bit dry, but Scott compellingly addressed various social issues and created intriguing characters ... that compelled me to continue. And I do agree that it went on too long and the ending is a bit disappointing, but overall I did enjoy the book. I like Melissa Scott's approach, so I'll probably read more by her.

Rosary Prayer Book 2005!.......2007-01-28
I have the original 1953 edition and wanted an updated edition. Of course the format has changed some but so far I am very pleased with the purchase. I use the book to lead a Rosary each Saturday morning with a group of about 8 men and find the meditations very thoughtful. I have not asked for feedback from the other men since we have only used the meditations for three or four times.
Sturdy, concise, small family prayer with historical overview.......2006-08-18
After the forward there's a few pages about Fr. Peyton's family ministry including Family Theater and 5 pages explaining the historical development of the rosary of which many folks may be unaware, including the Battle of Lepanto and the incredulous victory against the Turks (and I dare say miraculous but you'll need to research the statistics and data elsewhere). There are easy to follow instructions with a simple diagram for how to pray the rosary. For each set of mysteries there is one small page (remember, this is pocket size but thick) with a New Testament verse, a paragraph meditation, and a short 1 or 2 sentence prayer relating the mystery and the meditation to the reader. This is one of the finest rosary meditation books I've seen for busy families. The best feature about this book is that each set of mysteries has not one, but TEN different pages, so that there are ten different sets of meditation/prayer pages for each mystery. Still today the phrase Fr. Peyton coined applies: the family that prays together stays together. No wonder hundreds of thousands gathered to pray with him wherever he visited, including Europe and South America. The life of the Apostles with Jesus is recalled with each mystery in the most basic, direct language to focus on God's plan and his strong yearning for the salvation of all souls via real, true love.
Help for saying the Rosary .......2005-08-06
Great book for someone who is trying to learn how to pray the rosary. This book will guide the user on how to meditate while praying.
Father Peyton's Rosary Prayer Book.......2004-04-20
This book is now updated to include the Luminous mysteries. It is an incredible help in praying the rosary. Father Peyton writes with candor and warmth and his book teaches me something new every day. I am so thankful to have it!
Best Rosary Meditations our Prayer Group has seen........2001-10-17
There are six members of our Prayer Group who have met now for
the last 11yrs each week. We Pray The Rosary and Chaplet of
Devine Mercy along with other prayers. We have always used
Fr. Paytons Book and we are updating as our books are rather
dated. We need another 4 copies which I shall be ordering.
These latest editions are beautifully presented and should
last us for many years to come.
Kind Regards,
Margaret Irvine,

Beautiful Book!.......2007-06-11
This book is a must for anyone that collects or deals in Victorian Jewelry! Good information with exquisite photos of the finest examples of Victorian Jewelry.
Victorian well done.......2006-08-22
Victorian jewelry is one of my passions and I both collect and sell it. This book has fabulous illustrations, great information, and a bit of a different slant than other books on Victorian jewelry. I am so glad I did not miss this one, and bought copies for both my home and shop libraries. Worth twice the price!
Opened my eyes to a vast array of jewelry styles that I wasn't familiar with.......2006-07-07
This quite a different take on jewelry than most books, and accordingly very worthwhile. I got this book out of the library, read it cover-to-cover, and I am still buying a copy. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and wonderfully detailed.
These are the common, cheaper, but still beautiful pieces that are normally overlooked. I think that people who like Art Nouveau, which concentrated more on design than the expense of the materials, would find them particularly interesting. In addition, Dawes take us through the various fads of the time period. The text explains many of the peculiarities behind the rise of such styles (e.g.: aluminum was once rare; aristocrats wore iron jewelry to show that they had supposedly patriotically donated their real jewels to the government, etc.)
A very worthwhile addition to a jewelry book collection.
Secondary Victorian treasure pieces.......2006-03-19
During her nearly sixty-four-year reign Queen Victoria produced a cultural and fashion following particularly notable in the jewelry world, where English and European Jewelers produced less expensive pieces mimicking the queen's, which were worn by the middle class of her times. These pieces were long ignored because of their low value and cheap materials - but today are prized for their workmanship, which VICTORIAN JEWELRY: UNEXPLORED TREASURES reveals in chapters of history following designs, materials, and lovely secondary pieces. Styles presented here have been selected from collections around the world and are displayed through specially commissioned color photos just for this book.
Book Description
The author's exquisite boxes are constructed simply by machine stitching layers of fabric together. She then layers, blends and enriches the surfaces using lustrous threads, goldwork, random stitching, complementary fabrics, metals, wire, beads and stamped images. Hand made cords, braids and tassels complete the designs, which glow with the richness of their decoration. This lavishly illustrated book is packed with detailed information on all the techniques - from the original design ideas right through to the final embellishments. Detailed step-by-step photographs accompany easy-to-follow text, and a sequence of projects illustrate how to construct, decorate and complete a range of different-shaped boxes - from small rectangles to pentagons and chests.

creative ideas galore.......2007-05-12
Book is beautiful and filled with ideas applicable to more than just boxes. It is a source of inspiration for textile work.
A beginner's thoughts.......2006-02-24
There are many reasons for enjoying this book and for rating it so high. The instructions are easy to follow with wonderful illistrations and pictures with several patterns. It is well written with instructions on how to do each one.The author also gives you a brief but interesting history on theses boxes and her interpretation of them. In my opinion even if you never made one of these boxes the book is a work of art.
Beginners Guide to Embroidered Boxes.......2004-10-20
This is a great book for those wanting to expand their horizons. Very clear instructions that anyone who has basic sewing skills can follow to make 3 different projects as well as lots of variations.

Don't Bother.......2002-04-26
This book fails on a number of accounts. First the format: way too small (6-1/4 x 8-1/4) to display art and design work. Many of the featured works are smaller than 3 x 2. As if the work was worth showing off--very little is groundbreaking, or even interesting. And these are supposed to be the young "top guns" of the art and design work? And the preening is ridiculous--featured artists are asked juvenile questions like, "What's your favorite object?" and "What's your favorite curse word?". My advice: don't bother unless you're related to someone in the book.
