Book Description
The year 1993. Janos Dragomán, a wandering scholar, a world-famous and world-weary Hungarian writer, returns to his native town to visit three old friends. They are Aba Kuno, the almost saintly, highly respected rector of the university; Antal Tombor, the charismatic popular showman-mayor; and Kobra, a stable family man who is also a ubiquitous media pundit dispensing "common sense." The three have wives, all eager to be seduced by Dragom‡n, whose reputation precedes him. Through a series of flashbacks, covering his intellectually and sexually precocious schooldays, his memories of the life of Jews in 1944, and the 1956 Revolution (brilliantly rendered), we learn that Dragomán inadvertently caused the massacre of six young colleagues. Through the turbulent history of a Central European country, Konrád explores familiar themes and delivers a universal, appropriately ambiguous, message.

Yea Merlin.......2007-05-19
A good ending for the series. I enjoyed it and will be happy to share the series with my grandchildren. The books are not only a good adventure series, the characters grow, evolve and develop good characteristics that I would like to see in more people in my community.
The Wings of Merlin.......2006-02-06
I read The Wings of Merlin, by T.A.Barron. This is a fantasy book, fourth and last book of the Lost Years of Merlin series.
This book talks of Merlin's life on the island of Fincayra before he goes to England to serve King Arthur. Fincayra is an island in between the human world and the otherworld. Merlin and his friends are warned by the Great Spirit, Dagda, that Fincayra and the otherworld will come perilously close on the longest night of the year. At that moment, a spirit army will try to overtake Fincayra. Merlin's task is to reunite the separated peoples of Fincayra so that they may form an army to defend their homeland.
This book was a very good ending to the Lost Years of Merlin series. People who like fantasy and are interested in the legend of King Arthur should read it.
The Wings of Merlin - By L.E.A.......2006-01-19
I love this series. Although I am not a huge fan of fantasy books this book captivated me with an entertaining plot and wonderful characters. I have something else to say if you haven't read the other 4 books you won't know about a lot of things so before you read this you need to read the other books. Well hope this helps you!
The Kid's Review.......2005-12-19
Imagine a young, new wizard. A spirit tells him that his world would be destroyed if he doesn't gather the people of his world to one spot. Oh yeah, all the humans, animals, and creatures are separated by hate. This is the problem Merlin faced. When Merlin got a message from the spirits, he acted quickly. Gathering the people of Fincayra isn't an easy task, especially in two weeks, so Merlin gets some help from Rhia. As he gathers the people, he has many adventures including saving orphans, defeating Slayer, and connecting the Forgotten Island back to the main land of Fincayra. When everyone is gathered, they fight for their world. After succeeding, Dinatius comes to tell them that because of their deeds, the humans get to earn their wings back, but Merlin refuses his wings and goes back to Earth. The Wings of Merlin is a great book full of adventures.
The adventures in this book are realistic. There are many fantasy books where the events and the setting are completely not likely. The Wings of Merlin has a more realistic approach. For example, there are three worlds, Earth, Fincayra, and the Otherworld. They didn't just make up another universe completely. The author also made the characters like things we see today, humans, dwarfs, ect.
This is a great book because each of the characters has their own unique personality. Merlin is a brave person with a strong heart, but also some uncertainties. Hallia is a sweet, generous, fragile person. Rhia is fearless and has a spirit that fly's with the birds. Shoulder impingement is a very sensitive and friendly giant.
This book has characters that you can relate to. This is a good book for the sensitive, friendly, brave, fearless, fragile, ect. Since the characters have real personalities and they have uncertainties, it makes the readers more attached. You can't really connect to someone who is an extremely brave, extremely strong, extremely smart person, but you can connect with a person like Merlin because, like all of us, he has his flaws and uncertainties.
Over all, this is a great book that anyone can get attached to. Merlin makes ethical decisions on his journey. If someone doesn't like to read boring books and only the exciting ones, this is the book for them. This is a great book because what T. A. Barron did was tweak things we have today to make them magical. Barron didn't just create everything from scratch. This is good because it helps you understand it better. (...)
the wings of merlin.......2005-12-08
It was an brlliant and wonderful fantasy book. Way above and beyond expectations!

From the author: We examined age and sex differences in wing loading, aspect ratio, and wing span in a sample of 208 Merlins (Falco columbarius) captured at Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, during fall migration, 1978-1993. We also examined differences in tail loading of 166 of these Merlins. Adult males had significantly greater mass and wing loading than juvenile males. Adult females differed significantly from juvenile females only in mass. Females were significantly greater than males in every measure except aspect ratio. There were no apparent age differences in tail area or flight surface loading, but females had greater values in both. Merlins show fewer age differences in aerodynamic characteristics than Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus), probably because of differences in how the two species pursue and capture avian prey. Merlins usually capture prey in the air, sometimes after multiple stoops and at high flight speeds. In contrast, Sharp-shinned Hawks take birds from their perch or after a brief chase, often in dense vegetation, at relatively low flight speeds. Slower flight speeds require larger control surfaces and can explain the increased age differences in wing and tall areas in Sharp-shinned Hawks.

Definitely worth a listen.......2007-01-15
The Faceless Ones is a fine, if lesser lauded, story from the Troughton years of Doctor Who. It being Patrick Traoughton's first year in the role, the Faceless Ones reflects a tale in which he and his supporting cast are still searching to hit their stride in working with one another. They seem to have considerable strides here, which is no small feat. This story marks one of those periods (including the first season and a half of the show and much of the Peter Davison era) in which the TARDIS is simply over-crowded. It is challenging to find something engaging and useful for four TARDIS crewmen to do while still providing the spotlight in which the Doctor can maneuver as the natural engine of events and resolutions. It is interesting to note that despite the acting talents surrounding them, Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines are clearly developing a chemistry together, which foreshadows why the BBC felt that they needed to find more opportunities for their interaction in future stories (thus goodbye Ben and Polly). In the end, the Faceless Ones provides an interesting and dark story for the Doctor and his young companions. It is the sort of macabre fiction and conspiracy plotline that provided Doctor Who of the era with some of its absolute best stories.
A Lost Classic!.......2006-10-02
"Faceless Ones" stands second only to the superb "Fury from the Deep" in Patrick Troughton's untouchable canon as the Second Doctor. The story is chillingly riveting from start to finish, even in this narrated sound-only format (or perhaps especially so). As much as I truly admire Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee, Troughton's Doctor was the finest -- brilliant, bumbling, mysterious, thoroughly good, cunning, heroic, Troughton was certainly the most talented actor to tackle the part. (So thoroughly did he throw himself into the role, that he later told an interviewer he had to leave the series to save himself from schizophrenia.) His scripts sometimes let him down, but not this one. What a tragedy that the "bottom-line" goons at BBC trashed the tapes in the early 1970s to make shelf room for "Blue Peter" episodes, the fate of most of Troughton's stories, of which only 6 remain intact in the BBC archives. (Ah, but rumors persist of secret caches hidden away in wealthy collectors' vaults). Buyers of this richly realized audio-only version should make sure they have the two surviving visual episodes close at hand: these are part of the stunning and indispensible "Lost in Time" DVD set. This tale also features the underrated Polly, in her last Who story, in a dual role as herself and as a chameleon-like alien who assumes her identity. Also on hand are the staunch Cockney Ben, and of course Troughton's run-long sidekick, the 18th-century Scots piper Jamie. "Faceless Ones" is really the first story in which Jamie is allowed to shine, as in the hilarious exchanges at Gatwick Airport: guilelessly describing one of the alien villains to a stuffy, disbelieving airport administrator, a big-eyed Jamie offers that "he had a ray gun!" while Troughton tries his best to stifle him. The premise: "faceless" chameleons (who, among other unpleasantries, can't breathe until they can steal a shape that has nostrils) are systematically vanishing youthful "jet" passengers whose identities they assume. Edge-of-the-listening-chair suspense and great surprises throughout, with a particularly strong climax, disturbing and unforgettable. Troughton is in rare form, having a great time of it. Don't miss this one!
Slow and boring.......2002-03-16
"The Faceless Ones" is another BBC installment of reproduced missing episodes of Doctor Who in audio book format. All of these audio reproduction are excellent in terms of the clean-up of the audio track and the linking narration by former cast members. Some of the reproductions, however, fail in terms of actual content. "The Faceless Ones" is one Doctor Who story which does not quite make it.
We find the Doctor and his three companions at London's Gatwick Airport in 1966. After fleeing from the police, Polly witnesses a bizarre murder. After reporting it to the Doctor, the investigation is on! What is happening at Gatwick, and what does it have to do with the strange Chameleon Tours company? This story is simply too long. The plot plods along, moving pretty slowly, and without much enthusiasm. This story might have been decent if the editors had trimmed the fat to make four episodes rather than six. Much of the padding from this tale is made up of running around the airport, trying to convince the authorities of unearthly circumstances, and deviating plot lines that really lead to nowhere special. Most of the supporting characters are "faceless" as well, not enticing much interest. Even the Doctor and his companions lack their usual sparkle and drive that is seen in other stories. I was disappointed, and I wish I had not bought "The Faceless Ones."

Doctor Who: The Seeds Of Death (#112 Target Library).......2002-11-02
The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), Jamie and Zoe face the Ice Warriors in this one.
Ice Warriors make good return.......2000-10-27
This the adaptation of another Doctor Who serial for which I have fond memories of watching on TV. I also enjoyed it as a book, and even Terrance Dicks seems to have been inspired to put a little more effort in than is common for him at this time in his writing of Doctor Who novels.
Arriving on Earth in the Twenty-first Century, the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe are soon caught up in a crisis involving the Earth's only method of distance travel - Travelmat (or T-mat) is having problems at its relay point on the Moon, and the Earth authorities are obliged to send a rocket to the Moon to investigate. Given the lack of suitable people with requisite experience, the TARDIS crew volunteer.
But the lunar base has been taken over by an old foe, the Ice Warriors...
Depicting an Earth which has become unduly reliant on a single form of technology, this story depicts those who can think outside the normal boundaries as the only truly successful people. It is in this climate of mental stagnation that the Doctor is shown at his best.
As well as this societal commentary, the story features a number of claustrophobic settings which add to the tension of the story, and the lumbering menace of the Ice Warriors is again palpable.
This story survives in its original from and has been released on video. The novel succeeds over the original in that the TV serial tends to be quite slow moving at times, but the video wins out in the portrayal of the Ice Warriors. Enjoy either or both for their strengths!
Alien abductions in 1966.......2000-10-20
Terrance Dicks adapts this 1966 serial, which no longer exists on tape.
The TARDIS arrives back on Earth in 1966 (as it turns out, the very day Ben and Polly commenced their travels with the Doctor), and the crew encounter some mysterious happenings at London's Gatwick Airport. Some travellers with Chameleon Tours have travelled overseas but have not come back. Families are reassured by postcards describing events of their holidays. But these postcards are fakes...
After Polly mysteriously vanishes, someone who looks like her turns up working at the Chameleon Tours desk. But she says she isn't Polly...
This story of alien abduction and substitution has something of an X-Files feel, except that the authorities aren't an active participant in the aliens' plans. It is sadly the last story for Ben and Polly, who are essentially written out part way through the book and return at the end to make their farewells.
Like many of Terrance Dicks' adaptations, it is readable but lacks any particular inspiration in its writing.

Clare.......2002-11-02
This is a wonderful book. Also, check out the movie "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" and the book "Francis: the Journey and the Dream".
beautiful - breathtaking of timeless love and fairy tales.......1999-10-14
I love this book for a million reasons but probably the simplest reason is the mystery that is as old as the world and the separateness and unity of the sexes themselves. It paints Clare the human woman and Clare the divine woman and seeks not to compromise either but makes St. Clare real flesh and bone and brings her radiant awe into a new era when mankind is floundering for as sense of identity. Friar Bodo writes like no other and from the point of view of a contemplative, the inner way and written by a man who himself seems to be madly in love with the Lady Clare - and who himself has the touch and the gift of a medieval poet.
this book is written with all the tender poignancy of a lover and with all the insight and wisdom of a man who has followed in the footsteps of the Franciscan Way. For all who are interested in a more intimate knowledge of Clare and Francis or anyone simply interested in a love story at it's zenith and it's purest - this book is purely a real fairy tale and pure treasure.
A beautiful, gorgeous book that invokes prayer.......1999-03-05
Clare - A Light in the Garden is a book to be cherished, endeared, words to be read over and over. Murray Bodo paints a picture like no other person. He definitely has a sense of the holyness and purpose of St. Clare. Enjoy and share with others!

Not Specifically For Programmable Pressure Cookers.......2002-05-03
I bought the Better Homes and Gardens Pressure Cooker Cookbook at the same time I ordered the Faberware FPC400 Programmable Pressure Cooker. I was under the impression this cook book would be specific to the programmable pressure cooker but it's not. I've used a stove top pressure cooker for the past 20 years so I didn't need to add another cookbook to my collection for that type of use. I'm very disappointed with my selection because it is not what I expected. Does anyone have information about where I can get a cookbook for the Faberware FPC 400 programmable pressure cooker?!?
Good Everyday Recipes.......2001-03-07
I am a big fan of the Better Homes & Gardens cookbooks - the recipes are pretty traditional and rarely call for exotic ingredients (i.e. things that are not readily found in my pantry!). This book does have a good variety or recipes. The chapters are: Pressure Cooker Basics; Soups, Stews, Chiles and Chowders; Poultry and Meat; Vegetarian Main Dishes; Vegetable Side Dishes; Desserts.
I *think* that this 2000 hardcover edition is exactly the same as the 1995 edition - the copyright date inside mine says 1995. So unless Amazon shipped me the wrong one, it's the same book. The hardcover is nice - it's spiralbound inside so it will be easy to cook from. But if you're looking to save a few bucks you can get the same recipes from the 1995 paperback edition.
Basic and not very imaginative - and has at least one error.......2000-10-05
My mom had a pressure cooker when I was growing up in the '50s, and because she worked and had to get dinner on the table pretty fast, a large percentage of our meals were prepared in the pressure cooker. I particularly remember goulash and stews. And Mom's warnings about using it correctly so it wouldn't explode.
I got one many years ago, but was always intimidated by it so rarely used it as anything other than a cooking pot. Recently, though, I decided to start experimenting. I'd bought this recipe book - how can you go wrong with BH&G? - so I hauled it out and waded in.
The recipes are pretty basic - stews, pot roasts, variations on the chicken theme, some soups, and so on. I was looking for a pot roast, so I selected that recipe as my first. And immediately discovered a MAJOR goof in the recipe: It tells you to brown the meat in oil and then remove it before adding the vegetables and seasonings. Then it tells you to put the top back on and cook it under pressure for eight minutes. But it never tells you when to put the meat back into the pot! If I hadn't studied it carefully before I began cooking, I would have cooked the veggies without the meat and the meat would never have cooked. So I improvised and put the meat back in on top of the veggies before securing the lid.
I'm an experienced cook, and I know that it's always a good idea to read a recipe through first. For newcomers, though, a mistake like this could spoil the experience for them. Pressure cooking is supposed to be an fast and easy way to prepare nutritious meals, and it is, IF the recipe is correct!
So while I don't condemn the entire cookbook, I do suggest that you be sure to read the recipe through carefully first, and make sure it makes sense BEFORE you start cooking!
Better, more nutritious foods in less time.......1998-04-07
After trying a pressure cooker you'll agree that all households need one. Energy saving, both of your & the earth's natural resources; healthy, tasty food in much less time than ordinary cooking.
This book explains pressure cooking in an easy to read format with good photos so great results are easy to accomplish.

Self-styled “stencil diva” Jan Dressler tells beginners everything they need to know to get started, gives experienced stencilers new techniques, and even enlightens experts with unique tricks that make the work go faster. Each page explodes with color, creativity, information on the basics, and exquisite projects. Paint a continuous frieze of antique roses, a beautiful bordered floorcloth, a checkerboard wallpaper repeat, and much more. These techniques are so simple, easy to master, and appealingly illustrated that even the most timid home decorator will feel a surge of confidence as soon as she completes her very first stencil.
Customer Reviews:
WOW! I wish I could give 10 stars!.......2004-04-27
Jan Dressler is absolutely amazing! She explains everything you need to know in easy to understand language without making you feel like you are in preschool. Her pictures are colorful and whimsical. I have done a little stenciling and it was okay. My very first project after reading this book was a very complicated and detailed stencil (trompe l'oeil) across an entire wall. I could not believe how fabulous it looked! Family and friends are just about speechless when they see my wall. Jan has her own line of stencils which are fabulous but she also gives information on other stencil companies in the book. She tells you what to look for when buying stencils. If you don't get a good stencil, your results will be awful. I can not recommend this book enough. If you only buy one book in your life about decorating your walls, BUY THIS ONE!
