Book Description
Set mainly within a small rural area along a bay between New Brunswick and P.E.I., The Bay of Love and Sorrow is a hard-hitting tale of ambition and betrayal in which the senseless murder of a young woman in the summer of 1974 changes the lives of an entire community.
Events are set in motion when the once-strong friendship between privileged Michael Skid, the young son of a judge from town, and farmhand Tommie Donnerel ends in bitter misunderstanding. As Michael sets out to prove something to himself and to others, he finds himself drawn into the company of the beautiful, strong-willed Madonna Brassaurd and her brother, Silver. The three of them soon fall prey to the glamour of Everette Hutch, a charismatic and violent man, whose latest scheme pulls them in over their heads, leading to tragedy.
Bridging the decent world of Tommie Donnerel and the darker realm of the Brassaurds and Everette Hutch is Karrie Smith. She is home for the summer from community college, and it is her poignant longings for a different life that make her most vulnerable to a world she doesn’t understand.
The summer becomes fraught with desperation and abrupt changes of fortune, but it is only in the aftermath of murder that the real truth flowers for those who have been most responsible.
Taut, intricately layered, written in penetrating prose, The Bay of Love and Sorrows explores the possibility of redemption in whatever circumstances people find themselves.

One word: Wow.......2003-09-26
'The Bay of Love and Sorrows' is one of the best books--if not THE best--I've ever read.
Most books tend to be draggy at the start. This is an exception. It sucks you in from the beginning. It sucks you in and makes you feel like you're an observer, watching everything that's going on as the author describes it. You get outraged, you get saddened, you feel relief,...you feel everything as you read through this; and as you get further and further along, you don't want to stop reading.
The characters are human. No one is saintly, everyone has their faults and strengths. The actions and scenery are described very well--sometimes in a few words, sometimes in many words.
More importantly, though, it makes you think about how justice is doled out sometimes--how sometimes those who have nothing to do with what has happened end up suffering before those involved get their just desserts. It also makes you think about how some people will believe anything anyone tells them, without having the audacity and the know-how to question everything.
A definite must-read.
Sublime writing..........2001-04-11
If you've not read any of David Adams Richards' books, you're missing a wonderful experience. Richards is master of the sublime, even when covering gritty topics and plotlines. Such as it is in this title; the characters are imperfect, flawed, some of them disturbed, outcast. This story is a tangled web woven, entrapping the souls it skirts, unravelling their lives as the situation(s) gain momentum. There are truly haunting moments experienced as one absorbs the tale. Although the reader will have affinity with the characters' very human flaws, Richards never allows us to get too close and I believe he does that deliberately; this fiction takes an in-depth look at the shallowness of living on the edge and the waste that it is.
The story will pull you in gently and carry you along with ease - the writing is so good you don't notice it... you simply absorb the story and its characters.
I've been keeping my eyes open for more of this writer's works (I started with his latest "Mercy Among the Children") as he has quickly become one of my fave writers. This is an excellent starter into the rich and dense world of David Adams Richards. Enjoy.

I love this calendar!.......2006-02-22
This calendar is fun and functional. It notifies you of all the holidays you know about, as well as a few new ones. Such as, "Elbow kissing day" and "Sticky tricks day."
The artwork is eccentric and done in beautiful colors. I look forward to this calendar every year!

I became a fan from page one........2004-04-25
To be honest I kinda got interested in Static from the Cartoon series but, knowing he was an old character from the 1990's,thought there wouldn't be any comic books around for me read up on. How wrong was I? What a fantastic find this is for the die-hard fans too the casual fans of the TV show. The graphics feel so retro, but that gives it awesome appeal. I was so 'shocked' when I read what the real storylines were but thats what makes this a must have for any comic fan. It really does touch some deep issues and I haven't seen such as strong and influential black character in the comic genre for a very long time (If at all). They should re-release the original series so we can all benefit from this ground breaking yet fun and action-packed hero!
static's back.......2001-02-04
Ok what can i say i'm exstatic, lol. What a shocking development..he put a shock to my system. Its static the man virgil hawkins. I ran into this comic a while back when it was hot but wasn't really into it at the time. But now that i've matured and seen the comic it got me interested so ya know what i got static all the static i could find. I love this comic its like a comic for the ages, it deals with all the issues that need to be dealt with in our society. I love how it works the fluency, the art and of course teh writing. I don't know why i didn't find this sooner now i've made quest for myself trying to get my hands on all the static i can i belive issues 1-45. I recommend this to any comic fan of any gender and age. Its the kind of thing that any person can enjoy even those who aren't into comics. The teen angst, super heroes using their brains not their brawn. And that's all i can say..or can think of right now at least
The best overlooked title of the year........2001-02-03
This book recounts the origin and first adventures of Static. The artwork by John Paul Leon is beautifully done, and the painted coloring adds a real sense of quality. The story really captures the feel of Static's everyday life. It is different from the TV show in the details, but the characters, feel, and attitude are the same. I highly recommend it.

Eloquent defence of the faith.......2007-02-04
In the introduction, the author suggests that some readers might prefer to first read the two appendices at the end. The first: The Finger Of Truth And The Fist Of Reality shows how philosophical ideas infiltrate popular culture to enter our lives. The second: The Establishment Of A Worldview, provides the conceptual foundation upon which the framework of truth will stand. They explain the process that the author used to examine various concepts in order to arrive at his conclusions.
Part One deals with mankind as the measure of all things. In the chapter Morticians Of the Absolute, the author shows how determinism, Freud's views on religion and Darwinian theory have placed theism under severe pressure. The assault of atheism has become manifest in the political arena with totalitarian movements like communism and fascism. The author considers Nietzsche with his profound hatred of religion as the bridge between the 19th and 20th centuries, since he exerted a strong influence on, amongst others, Freud, Yeats, Jung and George Bernard Shaw . A passage from The Madman is quoted here. There are prescient quotes by GK Chesterton and Malcolm Muggeridge, to the effect that they foresaw that atheism would lead to violence and hedonism.
The second chapter looks at the doctrine of atheism - the belief that there is no God, which is an affirmation of God's non-existence. The author refers to various thinkers like Mary Hesse, Jurgen Habermas, Stephen Jay Gould, John Polkinghorne and Sir Fred Hoyle and considers the 2nd law of thermodynamics by asking the question of how biological systems manage to swim against the entropic stream. It makes absolute sense that scientists ought to maintain a judicious agnosticism about the obvious limitations of human understanding.
In chapter three: Virtue In Distress, the matters of purpose and morality are discussed. Zacharias demonstrates that the idea of being good has in popular culture been replaced by the idea of feeling good, in a twisting vortex of relativising. The traditional underpinnings of society have been ridiculed, which explains some of the present moral confusion. Very importantly, the author shows how secular philosophy cannot logically answer the question of how to determine right from wrong. Without God there is no starting point for ethical theorists. He provides interesting quotes from Alasdair MacIntyre (After Virtue) and Paul Johnson (Intellectuals). In their own lives, many intellectuals separated their mental skills from their moral practices, for example Sartre, Hemingway and Bertrand Russell. Nietzsche's influence on Hitler is discussed and the author concludes that morality as goodness cannot be justified with atheistic presuppositions. In other words, atheism's morality is unlivable.
The chapter: Sisyphus On A Roll deals with the issue of meaning and the problems of pleasure and pain. Here the author quotes from the lament of Voltaire, Solomon's Ecclesiastes and from Blaise Pascal, to show that without God there is no meaning. Only God can fill the emptiness within. The next chapter deals with death and quotes extensively from the book of Job. No hope exists in the naturalist universe. The shattered visage of atheism offers only the stare of death and a barren desert of despair. On the other hand, the book of Job offers hope in the response of God after all the questions, discussions and lamentations.
Part Two is about God, the treasure of life's pursuits. Zacharias acknowledges that the Christian faith has suffered severely at the hands of both its defenders and detractors. He shows how its detractors have assaulted it and how many of its adherents have cheapened it or made it incomprehensible. The narrative then discusses the journey of CS Lewis from atheism to Christianity. The author shows how the love of God stimulates a desire for studying the creation and concludes that Christ adds balance and detail to truth. Chapter seven: With Larger Eyes Than Ours, takes up the argument from design and demonstrates how the shackle of determinism is broken. Love precedes biological life and there is a moral nature to the universe. Chesterton, Lewis and Dennis Prager are some of the many authors quoted where it is explained how God puts things in perspective. The value of the individual and the meaning of relationships are also discussed here.
Every chapter of the main text concludes with questions for study and discussion. The book concludes with copious notes arranged by chapter. The Real Face Of Atheism is rather more difficult and intellectual than the two other books of his that I have read: Light In The Shadow Of Jihad and Deliver Us From Evil. But it is still accessible because of the author's engaging writing style and the way that he integrates the thoughts and observations of so many other authors into the text.
A response and a review.......2006-06-25
So many of the reviewers here on amazon have missed the point of this book! None more then James Arvo. If it is ok with everyone here I would like to call into question Mr. Avro's points against this book by Ravi Zacharias and then give my own review.
In Mr. Avro's review he calls into question Ravi's scholarship and then gives two reasons for doing so. The first is because of Ravi's definition of atheism, which according to Ravi is: "the doctrine of belief that there is no God. It is an affirmation of God's nonexistence."
Ravi gets this definition from the Encyclopedia of Philosophy (ed. Paul Edwards). This, in my opinion, is the HISTORICAL definition of atheism, not the neo-atheism wordplay/grammatically retarded, definition we see today (made popular by George Smith and others). Now if you want to dispute Ravi's definition that is fine, but two things need to be said really quickly before you do
First, if you've never met an adherent of this definition then I you haven't read anything (see Bertrand Russel) and I would question if you have ever been outside of your own house. Second, to put this as one of your major concerns is absurd! Right after he gives this definition for atheism Ravi says "Let's not, however, get bogged down in the morass of such pedantic verbal deep ends. Other counter arguments are more important." Immediately Ravi goes away from this and never looks back. He does not ask the atheist for proof of God's nonexistence (which would be where that definition would lead you if you actually wanted to use it as an argument), nor does Ravi ever bring up this definition or the consequences of it ever again. So to base so much of your problem with this book on ONE PARAGRAPH shows how intellectually honest you're trying to be when reviewing it. Also, if you truly believe this is a straw man definition of atheism then I suggest you go write a review for the Encyclopedia of Philosophy and complain about the same thing. But before you do, I would plead that you actually read the article on atheism in there and see why they come to one such definition.
My next concern with Mr. Avro's review is whether or not he actually read the entire book! Another main "problem" Mr. Avro brings up with Ravi's book, he states here in his review: "Atheists are not immoral, evil, selfish, ignorant, lazy, or possessed; they are simply people, as are theists."
I merely need to point to page 61 of this very book to show that Mr. Avro is way off if he thinks Ravi is making such a claim: "It is important that I be clearly understood. Not all atheists are immoral, but morality as goodness cannot be justified with atheistic presuppositions." Ravi then goes on to pound this point home for a few more paragraphs, STRESSING, that he is not calling atheists immoral! He is merely making a common argument that atheism cannot JUSTIFY morality. Mr. Arvo has taken Ravi's argument, twisted it to say; "atheists are all evil!!!" So he refutes this argument by saying that an atheist is not necessarily immoral (Obviously that is true! Ravi himself agrees with you!), and then Mr. Avro has the nerve to use the word "straw man" in his review of "The Real Face of Atheism"?!? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
Mr. Avro calls Ravi's scholarship into question, however, not only would I call Mr. Avro's scholarship into question but his reading ability as well! Mr. Avro cries out for honesty on this topic and then in the next sentence turns around and does the same thing he is accusing Ravi Zacharias of doing. I would suggest to people interested in reading this book that they ignore James Avro's review as he seems to be unable to fairly discuss a book that disagrees with his philosophical position.
Also, if I may say, reading that "Laon" here thinks Nietzsche is NOT an atheist just makes me sad.
Now onto my review, it which will be short but honest.
Ravi Zacharias is a VERY insightful writer, philosopher, and theologian. Having heard the lecture he gave at Harvard on this very topic I am familiar with a lot of what he of says in this book. In fact, I would suggest getting some of Ravi's lectures over this book based on the fact that Ravi is an amazing speaker. I have a friend who likes Ravi's speaking just based on aesthetics! In this book Ravi makes solid arguments showing how atheism is not a philosophical position someone should jump into lightly. He rarely tries to "prove" atheism is wrong rather he tries to show the consequences of what one must believe upon calling themselves an atheist.
Ravi leans on the writings of two of the most popular and influential atheistic philosophers, Marx and Nietzsche, to make his points. Like I said these two are the most influential and often quoted philosophers from the atheist camp, which is why I find it so amusing that some of the reviewers on here try and back away from their ideas and arguments once they are really brought to light. Using these ideas and arguments given by the likes of Marx and Nietzsche (as well as most of the great atheist philosophers of the past and present) Ravi begins to show the logical outworking of these views, and how a proponent of atheism cannot reject these very dire consequences. You can read the book yourself if you're interested in seeing what Ravi says are some of the logical consequences of atheism becoming a dominate philosophical view.
In the second half of the book Ravi partially presents the Christian worldview and compares it with atheism. He does an ok job of this, but I did find it a bit lacking, most likely because of my familiarity with this topic.
Overall I thought this book was solid. I think it is a must read for anyone who is looking into atheism and wants to hear the theist side of things (so anyone doing an honest search). Do NOT mistake this book for a book that argues for God's existence or one that tries to defend the Christian position. Ravi has written a few books on those subjects so if you're looking for something in that area I suggest doing a quick search on amazon. The only issue I have with this book is that it is a little scattered. This probably stems from the fact that this is Ravi's first book. Another quick positive of this book is that it contains some GREAT quotes AND is a great place to get book ideas as Ravi is always discussing other books, and writers.
I give this book 4 stars out of 5, and I BEG anyone thinking about writing a review for this book to please try and grasp the goal Ravi was striving for by writing this!
A logical responce to the "Death of God".......2006-06-05
Dr. Zacharias has laid out in this book the logical consequences of a death of God. If God is out of the equation what basis does humanity have for morals, for meaning, or even love? Zacharias delves into these, and other questions dealing with atheism.
In respnce to other reviews, yes Zacharias has met and delved into deep philisophical quesitons with atheists. He recants many instances in the book. In addition, he used to be an atheist, who after setting out to explore these quesitons himself ended up refuting athiesm and embracing theism.
Very Good.......2005-12-30
Why shouldn't athiests read this book? What are they afraid of? Where is the hate? What's not fair about supporting your own views? Are the reviews saying that Zacharias should write a book favorable to athiesm for him to be fair? Zacharias does say that athiesm does mean the belief that there is no God...which is the reason why athiests say that they lack a belief in god (why would someone have a belief in something that they believe does not exist?)
This book asks and answers many questions and problems with atheism and the world views that stem from it. There is no hateful language but a very thoughtful analysis of athiesm. He deals with events like the crusades and also states that there are many athiests that are good people and is not saying anything about them being mass killers so that is not even an issue. He attacks the idea of athiesm and its consequences in the 20th century...which still applies today.
I have read the atheist recommend review of this book by Doug Krueger (and the refutation on Zacharias' website http://www.rzim.org/publications/essay_arttext.php?id=2) and if anyone else reads the review it is quite plain to see that many of the atheists have not read the book but are commenting from
the Krueger review. Most of the athiest reviews say the exact same thing (like they are paraphrasing from the same source) and a few even cite the Krueger review.
Obviously this book isn't for atheists because they seem quite shaken by what this book has to say...so beware if you are an atheist...in fact you probably shouldn't read it.
I recommend this book and give it a 5 (I would give it a 4 because it is a little rough around the edges but thats to be expected for a first book) to cancel out some of the uninformed athiest reviews here.
Vicious, unwarranted (and ignorant) attack.......2005-06-29
This is a vitriolic attack on atheists. Never recommend this to any atheist for whom you have any respect or kind feelings. It is designed for only two purposes: encouraging other Christians in their hatred of atheists and engendering discord between our two camps.

Lame-"O".......2007-01-23
...Or why "O" ain't the whole story. The kind of people who like this book are probably the kind of people who think it's just so clever to dress baby in a onesie that says "Organic." Would you do that? I almost would. Yet sometimes there's a mile between almost and would. This bright, cheery book has "baby-shower present" and "first-time mom" written all over it. My excuse, as a 2x mom? Christmas present. I would be disingenuous if I said I've gleaned nothing flipping through the pages. I'm interested in the author's use of grains and potato to provide structure to purees, and I admit to being fascinated by her use of onions, spices and tomatoes in baby food, all of which I considered potential irritants to the infant palate.
I'll tell you flat out that my 7-month-old was crazy for the "apple and banana breakfast," to which, I might mention, I added butter, against the author's advice, and salt. I recently baked the "fruity cupcakes" for my 4-year-old's birthday at preschool; they had just the right healthy-PC-good-mom thing I was going for, though the preschool teacher was disconcerted by my use of unlit candles to anchor little slices of kiwi to the top. Did I intend to light those things?
My two main complaints against the book are these: the idea that by cooking organic, one is meeting all one's child's nutritional needs is perilous, and do you really want to start cooking separate meals for your child now? Let's take a look at a recipe geared for the 4-7 month-old, "Mediterranean Vegetables and Chicken." You start by heating olive oil in a pan and sautéing vegetables. Do I need to expand on this? I mean, I'm all for it if it's in lieu of mac-and-cheese and hotdogs, but then that's also a separate meal for kids. Guess what you'll be doing when the kids are 16? I prefer to adapt whatever I'm eating to baby's needs; so for instance, if I put a chicken in the pot in the a.m., I poach and puree the liver for baby, and she also gets to drink a teacup of nourishing broth. If the whole family is eating Mediterranean Vegetables and Chicken, then OK, let's grab the Braun Multiquick and get busy.
More seriously, the author's dietary guidelines are better suited to the forty-year-old male than the infant. Some are flat-out wrong: "There is no better way to enjoy the full nutritional value of organic fruit and vegetables than to eat them raw." Because babies lack adequate amounts of the enzyme for converting beta carotene into Vit A, they generally don't do well with vegetables. And mother's milk contains over 50 percent of calories in fat, much of it saturated, so the wise mom will make a point of feeding her infant egg yolks and grass-fed butterfat as she weans, not pasta shapes and tomato sauce. Finding good information on the feeding of infants is difficult, the proverbial needle in a haystack. My best recommendation is to check out the Weston A. Price Foundation's journal "Wise Traditions"--look on-line--for excellent information on Vit. D and infancy, cod-liver oil supplementation, etc. The orientation toward non-toxic and alternative farming and pasture-fed livestock fits the bill, and the articles are generally intellectually stimulating.
Great recipes, good ideas -- but would like to be more inclusive.......2007-01-22
This cookbook has some lovely recipes and I applaud the authors for making most of them accessible, and without a lot of ingredients or ridiculous amounts of preparation. After all -- the recipes are for babies. I make the "days out cakes" for my family a lot, and everyone loves them; the meatballs, too, are delicious and good for all. The instructions were clear; the photos, adorable.
However! I'd like if the recipes were more inclusive, offering amounts for more than just one baby, and suggesting how to embellish the recipe for adults. The thing is, if I'm going to spend a lot of time cooking for my baby, especially if the recipes are this yummy and healthful, it would be nice if I could have the option for making the recipe for my entire family (maybe suggesting a spicier sauce for mommy & daddy, for instance). I did that anyway; it would just have been nice to have assistance and ideas from the book's authors.
Some delicious dishes for OLDER BABIES.......2006-11-08
I've enjoyed making many of the dishes in this book--a highlight: the delicious Pumpkin Stew, which my one-year-old gobbles up and I like too--but the recipes are not appropriate for new eaters. A 4-month-old shouldn't be eating complex foods liked mixed vegetables sauteed with onion in olive oil. Like other reviewers, I suggest this book as a complement to other resources.
Organic and Healthy.......2006-11-06
If you are interested in books that provide healthy meals this is a great buy. The book is organized by stages. Simple recipes are provided and your child not only gets to eat healthy meals but a variety at that.
Recipes mediocre, more work than they are worth.......2006-08-15
I liked the idea. I was drawn to it because of the title and thought it would give me good ideas for healthful food for my little one. It didn't.
I have a very picky eater (14 months) and thought this book would give me ideas for new healthy foods to give her, but I must admit, cooking that intricately for a child who tasted it and was not in the least interested is not how I wish to spend my time as a mom. Better to feed her off of my healthy plate. I'd rather cook a meal big enough for the both of us that at least one of us will eat! Maybe in a year or two the recipes for older children will be more successful.
Also, I ate a few of the dishes(since good organic food shouldn't go to waste!) and they really weren't that impressive to me either. And I am far from picky!
The discussion on organic importance was interesting and well written. However, I have already chosen to do as much organic food as I can afford, so it wasn't what I was looking for in the book.
Finally, she talks about weaning a breastfed child as you introduce solids, which is ridiculous. It outlines a weaning process, which just doesn't have a place in the book.

Customer Reviews:
Exellent book!.......2006-05-07
I just received this book and can hardly wait to start stitching some of the samplers. Out of the 23 samplers there are probably at least 15 that I want to do. They are gorgeous and the charts are easy to read. They are colored and with symbols and are very clear. The threads used are DMC as well as a few variegated and overdyed ones. There are band samplers as well as bordered ones plus lots of suggestions for using smaller parts of each one. I am very happy with this book!
Useful, creative.......2003-02-19
This book has simple, up-to-date designs that can be easily customized. It also offers many ideas for using parts of designs for other projects.
I'm ordering it to make a wedding sampler for my son and his fiancee, but will also use it for other gifts.
The samplers incorporate traditional motifs, but with modern color schemes.
Modern Samplers.......2000-06-28
This book begins with information about the history of samplers, and each project has an introduction to explain its inspiration. There are a wide range of projects to choose from and lots of helpful advice on how to personalise each one. The colours are well selected and fabric recommendations really enhance each project. The patterns are clear and in colour and are of a good size, although some go over two pages which is always a pain. Some of the samplers have options for adding beads and charms, which gives great variety. The projects are on a range of topics, including seasons and celebrations. I have been delighted with it!

Through lavish photographs, the editors of Victoria magazine show how to make a romantic statement with your windows that will wake up an entire decorating scheme. Find out how to enhance your home’s architecture, and use treatments to soften a room’s lines, add color and warmth, emphasize good proportions, and improve on bad ones. See how beautiful simplicity can be, with billowy white muslin curtains or basic floral prints. Explore traditional English country style, perhaps with swag and tail; dress windows for privacy; and take a close-up look at everything from tiebacks to shutters. Whichever you decide on, the room will have an exciting new focus.

Customer Reviews:
an interesting interlude.......2002-01-30
I enjoyed this book and found some of the detail fascinating although at other times I felt it was skimming the surface and not going deep enough. There are slight errors eg Fletcher Henderson did not write King Porter Stomp he only arranged it and I was surprised to see Bubber Miley's picture included in a set of fifties Ellington men - he must have smelt pretty bad!
On the whole a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the big bands
More great stories of the Big Band Era.......2001-09-01
Like the Best Damn Trumpet Player, Grudens writes with feeling about all his heroes. Reading the interview with band leader Artie Shaw proves his respect for the musicians. Grudens is not a critic. He loves the music of his life and proves to all of us that the music of the era was the best music ever recorded. Where else have you ever read about people like Red Norvo, The Dorsey's the family of Duke Ellington, the great Stan Kenton, with help from Audree Kenton, Les Paul, the great Les Brown etc. You will love this book if you love that music. There is a feature about all the bands of Europe like Syd Lawrence and Ted Heath. The book is just great. There is even a section about the great songwriters, Ervin Drake ( I Believe and It Was a Very Good Year)and Jack Lawrence ( Linda, Tenderly) and others.
ANN JILLIAN'S INTRO. SAYS IT ALL!.......2000-08-21
Richard, you did a terrfic job, your book is for all music lovers but especially those of us who love big bands and great singers. And you know I love ANN JILLIAN'S SINGING! Count me in man. Best of luck Richard. Andy
