    Book Description

John Barth, the postmodern master, is back with his sixteenth book and third collection of stories, which gathers for the first time in one volume stories previously published in various journals. Exploring ideas of narrative frames, stories within stories, and the uncanny power that language has in our lives, he offers the thrilling blend of playfulness and illuminating insight that has marked him as one of America's most distinguished writers. Here are tales of aging, time, possibility, and relationships. And in typically Barthian fashion, they are framed by the narration of a veteran writer, Graybard, and his flirtatious, insouciant muse, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). During the eleven days that follow September 11, 2001, Graybard and WYSIWYG debate the meaning and relevance of writing and storytelling in the wake of disaster, or TEOTWAW(A)KI The End Of The World As We (Americans) Know It. The Book of Ten Nights and a Night is vintage Barth, sure to appeal to his loyal fans and find new readers touched by his irreverent but deeply human perspective on how writers can respond to the emotional and ethical demands of tragic events.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2007-05-25

I really liked this volume (and subsequent numbers 2-5 for that matter). It brought me back to a more simpler time in my life when all I worried about was how the Fantastic Four was going to beat Dr. Doom again, and not today when I worry about the rent or who is going to be the next President.

GOOD STUFF! I would somewhat disagree with those reviewers who commented about how the paper is not as good (it isn't) or the fact that it is published in black and white and not color. As DC has done with their titles in their "Showcase Presents" series, both of these were obviously done to keep the price down to the consumer, and for that I am grateful.

One personal quibble. At the front of each volume, they have a couple pages listing each volume by number, and the writer, penciler, inker, and letterer, but they failed to list the title of the individual book there (ie. Fantastic Four 21#:'The Hate Monger', Fantastic Four 22# 'The Return of the Moleman," etc). To me this seemed incomplete as it forces you to look through the full volume for one villian. That may have been the publishers intentions, but I wish they had followed DC's example in the way they did theirs.

I personally own about a quarter of the original volumes listed in the entire "Fantastic Four Marvel Essential" series (bought them as a kid), and keep them in special individual plastic sleeves to preserve them. Not so much for financial reasons, but more for the memories. Therefore, for me, it was good to read them in this complilation set, and not having to worry about the condition if I were to take mine out of their sleeves to read them.

Looking forward to volume six when it comes out.

I love classic comics! I wasn't even alive when these were printed and being born twenty years later I'm happy they reprinted these classics. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are my favorite comic celebrity team. The writing and stories are classic comics with a capitol c. The art is awesome. The books still hold up today. They're really enjoyable stories with great art. It'll make you a better person to read these. The black and white printing annoys me a little in this day and age. We have the technology to at least print them on color newsprint... but it does help you enjoy the art in its simplicity. But who can complain at the price? Great for summer reading outside!

5 out of 5 stars PERHAPS THE BEST OF THE MARVEL ESSENTIALS.......2007-03-14

The Essential Fantastic Four, Volume I is possibly the greatest bound volume of the Marvel Essentials. Included is the origin storyline of perhaps the greatest villain of all time, namely the brilliant and psychologically complex Doctor Doom. Prevalent throughout this work are displays of top-notch science fiction along with great characters who display unending moments of unpredictability, thus leaving the readers at the edge of their seats.

Of course, the characters that make each issue come to life are the Fantastic Four members themselves. Leading the pack is Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, who is esteemed as the most ingenious scientific mind on Earth and who possesses the ability to stretch his body over vast distances. Next in line is Ben Grimm, who comes to be known as the Thing, since his once natural, human body becomes, on the positive side, an entity that can lift heavy objects in a way comporable to the Hulk's feats, but on the negative side, has his flesh already transformed to a hideous, multilayered composition of rocks. Third is Sue Storm, who is known as the Invisible Girl and is the girlfriend (and would years down the road become the wife) of Mr. Fantastic; she possesses the power to turn invisible and in these early issues has not discovered or honed her abilities to project forcefields to protect her and her loved ones from various oncoming invaders and their weapons. And then there is Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch and brother of the Invisible Girl; he is the only member who can fly and who can turn his body into flame and project his elevated body heat to burn, melt and vaporize various objects, to say the least.

As a unit, the Fantastic Four are the most interconnected fighting team in the comic book universe. Their origins have a unifying commonality, and that is the exposure to high levels of cosmic radiation during a spaceflight that would give each member its own abilities. Collectively, they are regarded as one of the greatest superhero teams of all time, and since they were already a tightly knit unit on an interpersonal level before attaining their superpowers, the Fantastic Four arguably know one another's strengths and weaknesses at a level that not even the Justice League or The Avengers could equal.

Again, Doctor Doom is perhaps the greatest villain of all time, but he does not necessarily mop up the stage in regards to the characters posing difficult challenges for the Fantastic Four. Making their presences felt are The Mole Man, The Puppet Master, The Mad Thinker, and the emotionally complex hero/villain Namor, the SubMariner.

In all, the heroes and villains set up perplexing stages and situations that can stump many a brilliant mind. One side can, proverbially speaking, go in with the best chess moves and pieces in their arsenals and strategies only to find out that they have ended up at the poker table. The developments that ensue are enough to create discussions among those interested in game theory; it is apparent that even the renowned mathematician, John von Neumann, would have been pleased with these stories.

Along with the intellectual flashes of brilliance displayed among the characters are the scientific gadgets that, visualized almost half a century ago, are yet to be developed and that would seem impressive and advanced even by early twenty-first-century standards if their existence came to fruition.

All in all, this bound volume was created during the space race and the Cold War against Russia, and the first man had yet to land on the moon. It is quite apparent that people had a faith in technology that modernizing civilizations could improve living standards and make societies happier, as well as more progressive and peaceful. Indeed, one today now wonders where everything seems to have gone wrong with what apparently amounts to a RAM and ROM cesspool.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-10-30

One gripe, it's in black and white. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I love this book. I'm more of a fan of the DC heroes (Flash, Green Lantern, etc), but this is where the "Marvel Age of Comics" began. Lots of fun to read (for an old guy like me).
Dr Doom, Sub Mariner, Puppet Master....it all starts here, true believer. Kerby and Lee at thier finest. If you are interested in comics and want a good read, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Look Through Time.......2006-04-24

This book is an excellent collection of the earliest adventures of the Fantastic Four. Every reader, whether they are just discovering the FF or are a long time fan, will enjoy this book. Although the adventures are a bit campy, they accurately reflect the state of comic art and storytelling during the 1960s. Long time fans are likely to discover new facts about the team that are not well known. For example, Reed Richards fought in World War II and Susan Storm had not yet manifested her force field power during this early period. As expected, this book contains the origin story of the FF. Just as entertaining, however, are the origin and first appearances of such villains as the Mole Man, the Skrulls, and Dr. Doom. The Fantastic Four was also used by Marvel Comics as a venue to re-discover the Sub Mariner from the 1940s and `50s. In addition to the stories, this book provides a window into the past. Some of the dialogue and fashion would clearly be out of place today. For example, not too many teenagers, like Johnny Storm, would go on a date wearing a fedora. The only down side is the lack of color. The comics are printed in black and white. This shortcoming, however, is easily overlooked by the reader once they begin an adventure. Bottom line, this book is a great look through time at both the origin of the FF and the world of the 1960s. Flame On!

    1 out of 5 stars He completely changes the backstory . . . .......2007-07-01

It seems that I'm the only one on the planet who hated Ash Ock and Paratwa. Liege Killer is definately a groundbreaking novel. The problem occurs in that he completely changes the backstory (which was excellent) to a half-arsed alien novel, instead of a scientific breakthrough. This discontinuity is similar to the storyline changes between the movies Highlander and Highlander II.

I cannot recommend either Paratwa or Ash Ock, as they are very poor sequels to a fantastic novel, solely due to the drastic change in the storyline.

5 out of 5 stars More of What You Liked in Liege-Killer.......2005-02-09

Most of the reviews have explained some of the plot, so I won't rehash that. What I will try to do is explain why you should or shouldn't buy this, whether you'll like this or not.

First, you probably shouldn't buy or read this until you have read the first book in the series, Liege-Killer. The series is definitely in the genre of science fiction thrillers, where the action flows through quick and strong, the events really have major consequences, and major conspiracies are revealed. It's a great read.

If you like Liege-Killer, then will you like Ash Ock. It gives you more of what makes Liege-Killer a great read. If you thought the Paratwa and the Irryan Council had conspiracies up their sleave, there are more hidden agendas and conspiracies that are revealed and more struggles to fight, with even bigger stakes for the characters involved. If you didn't like Liege-Killer, then you'll probably not like Ash Ock either, since it's more of what's in Liege-Killer.

One word of warning. If you're going to buy and read Ash Ock, you'd better buy the third book in the series, Paratwa. Even though Liege-Killer was a book that can stand on its own, and the story has a satisfying ending, the Ash Ock book is the 1st part of a 2 part story that ends in Paratwa. Ash Ock ends abruptly in the middle of a story and Paratwa continues right where Ash Ock ends and ends the 2 part story in a nice conclusion. So get both, or you'll be kicking yourself after you finish Ash Ock and you'll be wondering what happens in the next hour in the story.

I haven't had this much fun reading a science fiction thriller in a long time. Enjoy the ride.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-09-22

This Paratwa saga is one of the best series I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars If you liked Liege-Killer, you'll love this one!.......2000-02-17

Brilliant piece of action Sci-Fi writing! Read it during the weekend, cause you won't be able to put it aside until you are done!

2 out of 5 stars Adds to plot, but really a teaser for book 3. Skip it........1999-02-22

This is all plot, little action, simple intrigue, and introduces new characters. It then just stops, like the author ran out of paper or ink. This book is just a teaser for the next in the series. If I had known this, I would have waited for the next in the series and skipped this episode.

      Book Description

The rapid spread of the liberal market economy throughout the world poses a host of new and complex questions for the consideration of religious believers, as well as anyone concerned with the intersection of ethics and economics. Is the liberal market order, particularly as it affects the poor, fundamentally compatible with Christian moral and social teaching? Or is it in some ways in substantial tension with that tradition? In Wealth, Poverty, and Human Destiny, editors Doug Bandow and David L. Schindler bring together some of today's leading economists, theologians, and social critics—including Wendell Berry, Michael Novak, Richard John Neuhaus, and Max Stackhouse—to consider whether the triumph of capitalism is a cause for celebration or concern. The contributors' fresh, insightful examinations should provoke a healthy debate about the intertwined issues of the market, human freedom, the family, technology, and religion.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent Debate About Religion, Ethics, and Capitalism.......2006-03-01

This book, like Rod Dreher's recent book on "crunchy cons," attempts to revive a debate that was once popular among conservatives and libertarians in the 1950s: how to improve, critique or defend capitalism given moral, ethical, and spiritual needs that sometimes conflict with the imperatives of the market economy. While the format is a bit distracting, the essays are thought-provoking and make you yearn for the days when this type of debate could be freely held without the political name-calling that often results. For my money Wendell Berry turns in some of the more provocative and interesting passages, though the entire book is well worth purchasing if the topic is of interest.

Whether you support capitalism or not, read this book and maybe you will learn something. Of course, we don't live in a capitalist society. 17 million people work for the 85,000 subdivisions of federal, state and local governments. That is more than any industry in this country, accounting for 4 trillion of a 11 trillion dollar GNP. Yes, we are not a capitalist society.

3 out of 5 stars Talented scholars in a belabored and obtuse debate.......2004-04-16

Christians hold a long-standing commitment to the poor of the world. Today we can see the fruits of this commitment exemplified around the world in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and the like. However, as the poor remain, so do questions regarding the individual and corporate actions of the Christian. These questions, part of a long-running debate, are enhanced by this recent compilation, which stems from a "joint project undertaken by the John Templeton Foundation and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) to investigate whether and to what extent the market economy helps the poor" (viii). Editors Bandow and Schindler each assembled a team of scholars to help debate this issue. Both groups of scholars are firmly committed to the Christian responsibility towards the poor. Their ideological differences are not over whether a responsibility exists, but rather which economic system and practices best fulfill this responsibility. While there are many nuances in each individual's argument, it is possible to draw some broad trends from the authors.

Bandow's authors are markedly more pro-capitalism than Schindler's authors, who express serious reservations about the adequacy of capitalism for the task. Many of the Bandow authors cite historical evidence of reduction in material poverty as a strong case for capitalism. This proves difficult for Schindler's group to refute. They instead identify a spiritual poverty in capitalist societies that they label as "homelessness." In Schindler's own words, "`homelessness' refers to a lack of one's proper place in the cosmos" (351). He states, "man is rightly said to be at home insofar as he realizes the relations that most profoundly constitute his being as a creature" (351). He fleshes this out through four different relationships: man with God, man in community, man in family, and finally "liturgical-eucharistic community" (353).

This `homelessness' argument, coupled with an argument regarding `gift-giving,' constitutes the majority of the material from Schindler's authors. Adrian Walker initiates the thread of gift-giving, writing "the best, most central paradigm for understanding free economic exchange is not contract among self-interested strangers, but gift-giving among neighbors" (23). The question arises as to how to promote this mentality of gift giving. While most of Schindler's authors seem to leave it in the hands of the individual actors, one does propose a role for the church: "From a Christian point of view, the churches should take an active role in fostering economic practices that are consonant with the true ends of creation. This requires promoting economic practices that maintain close connections among capital, labor, and communities, so that real communal discernment of the good can take place." While I agree that much can be accomplished through the church, I am not sure of the tangible first steps advocated by this mindset.

Bandow, in his summary at the end of the book, concludes the following: "In the end, the problem of humanity is not liberal economics, but humanity. All men are fallen and sinful; greed and envy are our inevitable lot, no the products of particular social systems" (343). While affirming of capitalism's positive aspects, Bandow is clear about his conviction that capitalism is not Christian. "It neither advances human virtue nor corrects ingrained personal vices; it merely reflects them. But socialism and its weaker statist cousins exacerbate the worst of men's flaws" (345). This calculated affirmation of capitalism is wise and proves to be too much for Schindler's authors to outweigh.

One of the primarily difficulties in reading a book of this nature is that it is difficult for any of the authors to truly get going within their argument. The interplay between various articles is on the surface at best, save the summaries by Bandow and Schindler. Many of the authors reference Novak in their essays but it is clear that the majority have not been able to read and respond to each other's arguments. This leaves the reader with an unfinished feeling, not because of the need for further thinking on a broad topic, but rather because of dropped questions that never get picked back up. More tightly defined topics, such as Lewis' "Wealth, Happiness, and Politics: Aristotelian Questions" or Davis' "`We Are Not Our Own': George Grant's Critique of Science, Technology, and Capitalism" seem to have greater impact in the end because of their defined limits. While these may not specifically propel the debate, they are satisfying in their success at accomplishing their stated tasks.

I am unable to recommend this book to a wide audience. While it would be possible for anyone to glean tidbits of insight from the reading, I am convinced there must be better books and articles available (although this review will not serve as a bibliography directing the reader towards greener and more fertile soil).

In my opinion, the essays from P.J. Hill, Daniel Griswold, and Jennifer Roback Morse have particular merit for a wide audience. Hill, Professor of Economics at Wheaton College, argues convincingly against using government to redistribute income. Griswold, Associate Director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute, overwhelmingly shows the need for international trade in alleviating poverty. Morse, Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, writes sensitively about the need to embrace "those who are legitimately dependent on us." Morse's voice, one of the most engaging of the compilation, rings loudly in an arena that all too often ignores human dependence. I do not mean to discount the other side of the argument by highlighting these three essays. It is simply that there must be a better forum through which to learn the information that Schindler's authors attempt to present. Perhaps my frustration is largely due to their lack of plausible proposals for tangible first steps. Perhaps my frustration is simply that I am unconvinced (and frankly, tired) by their belaboring of gift and homelessness. Or perhaps my frustration is over their needlessly obtuse arguments. Whatever it may be, I would encourage the determined reader to pick and choose rather than bind himself/herself to reading this entire volume.

      Book Description

On the heels of the hugely successful "California Wine Map", The Wine Appreciation Guild has just released the "Quick Access Napa-Sonoma Wine Country Map and Guide" spotlighting the wineries and vineyards of the country's wine capital. This full color, topographically precise map is the most comprehensive Napa-Sonoma wine map on the market with over 400 wineries and vineyards.

"Quick Access Napa-Sonoma" features a detailed listing of wineries and vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Counties, including name, address, phone, tastings and public or by appointment only tours. It also lists area tasting rooms and gourmet groceries. The map's simple accordion fold makes it easy-to-use, even when opened to its full size of 12 x 26 inches. And one doesn't have to be the rough and tumble itinerant to appreciate that it's laminated.

"The success of our recent 'California Wine Map' told us that people not only appreciate California's wine country, but also appreciate an accurate, well-made, user-friendly map," said H. Hesse, a mapmaker since 1967 and founder of Global Graphics. "The number one request we received was for a map focusing specifically on Napa-Sonoma and we were delighted to once again combine our passion for cartography with our appreciation of this beautiful area."

The California Wine Map became a quick favorite among the states professional wine country day-trippers. Charles E. Olken, wine writer for the Los Angeles Times called it "One of the best and least expensive guides on the market," and American Airlines American Way magazine declared it a "must have." Anthony Dias Blue on KFWB-FM (Los Angeles) said, "If you travel in search of wine, you're going to love the California Wine Map. This isn't just one of those slick brochures published by the local wine-country tourist board. It's a full-fledged, state-of-the-art, satellite-generated map of California made by a well-known cartography company called Global Graphics."

The California Wine Map was also highly recommended by The New York Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Oakland Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Global Graphics maps feature full color thematic cartography, based on satellite photography and global information systems, and use data from several sources to ensure information is up-to-date and complete. Global Graphics maps are among the most accurate and user-friendly on the market.

For my latest trip to Napa/Sonoma wine country, I purchased several books beforehand in the hopes that, among all of our choices, we'd be able to find the perfect, off-the-beaten-path winery. We did in Tres Sabores, although sadly most of their wine had been damaged in a fire.

Having a good book or two on the wineries and restaurants is helpful, but in the end, this map, with it's simple laminated 4-fold design, road map with wineries and tasting rooms labelled on one side, and on the other side, an alphabetical list of wineries, their hours and phone numbers, was the most useful.

Whatever the price, this clear and comprehensive tool is worth three times as much. And definitely stop by and have a chat with the folks at Tres Sabores.

                      Book Description

Slip them into your purse or briefcase, or tuck them into your glove compartment, your carry-on, back pocket or backpack, these durable, laminated "books in a map" take travel guides into an exciting new direction. Highly visual, AAA Greatest Hits Maps provide solid information in an accessible format for our fast-paced times. AAA Insider Guides have everything great about a map - the size (folds down to 4 1/2" x 9"), the information (nobody does maps better than AAA), the price (only $7.95) - as well as the essential features of a guide book (24 pages of text by someone worth listening to, recommending the best of everything, whether in the Bay Area, Napa, or Sonoma, including opening and closing hours, telephone numbers, and probable expenses). Laminated so you can spill coffee on them and fold and unfold and refold as often as you like, these maps are designed to work for you. Everything recommended is numbered and color codes. Since the numbers run sequentially, you can find anything as you logically travel: a restaurant next to the hotel, a picnic area near the winery. Detail maps right next to your chosen spot mean you can fold the Insider Guide down to a handy size. And, of course, there is an overall map, providing you all the context and more that you'll ever need. These are the people you wish you could call and say, "I'm going to Napa for a weekend...Where should I go? Where should I stay? Tell me the trendiest restaurant, but also the best deli to load up on picnic supplies. And by the way, is there a really great spa where I can have a massage, or a mud bath, after tasting too many wines? Which wineries did you say I should visit? And where can I take a glorious hike?" Perlmutter and Raver have all the answers.

                      Book Description

Hundreds of beautiful color pictures and recently-discovered, important information give this new study of 19th and 20th century Japanese porcelain a most refreshing approach. Visual comparisons of the major styles can be made even by the beginning student because there are so many fine color pictures of the examples. Kakiemon, Nabeshima, Arita, Hirado and Fukagawa styles of Imari; Kutani; Satsuma; and known craftsmen's works are shown in profusion. The European-influenced styles of the mid-20th century such as Nippon, Noritake, and those pieces marked Occupied Japan are presented as trade items necessary for the changing Japanese economy. Fascinating historical and technical background aids in the recognition of each style. Since research continues to add evidence to changing attributions of origins and artists, the author explains both old and new theories and encourages further research. In what is seen as a quickly growing field of collecting, this book stands at the crossroads of scholarship and popularity. Both groups will find information of keen interest and delight in the gorgeous products of the Japanese artistic and commercial communities.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Card Idea and Techniques!.......2006-02-06

What fun! I discovered this book in time to use some of the ideas for my family valentines. The full-color photos make the projects appealing. Each card has a supplies list and step-by-step instructions to assemble it. Notes for special techniques (making your own paper, painting a rose, making a copper charm, etc.) are inserted close to the card that uses that technique.
One or two cards are a little clunky in their design or artwork, but most are quite striking. It's always good to get fresh ideas and this book has plenty.

                                    Book Description

Tom Wayman has been writing and publishing the poetry of everyday life for over twenty years. This anniversary collection gathers the best of Wayman's published work from eleven previous volumes, along with some provocative new poems, in celebration of his commitment to honest, accessible writing with a sense of humour.

Although Wayman laments the disappearance of poetry as a popular art form, and its adoption as "an instument of torture" in educational institutions, "like a steadily-promoted deck officer on the Titanic" he has been having a darn good time as a writer. For years he has been considered the guru of the work poetry movement, and has held a number of blue-collar and white-collar jobs across Canada and the USA.
