4 out of 5 stars We are all peasants in the world.......2007-10-05

When it comes to the plight of the farmer and the destitute, Mo Yan has experience in spades. Having come from Revolutionary China, he relates a tale in his introduction to Shifu, You'll Do Anything for a Laugh where his village was so poor and hungry that when a shipment of coal arrived, the people started eating the coal.

But Mo Yan doesn't take that kind of personal experience to make his work seem like communist propaganda, making the government seem ornately inhuman and the working man saintly and oppressed. In this novel, there is clearly an imbalance of power, and the exploitation of the poor and the powerless by the connected and wealthy, but the oppressed are hardly saints. They are, instead, people with their own shortcomings and prejudices, and by understanding that, Mo Yan shows the true power of an artist--rather than stoop for the easy message, he dives into the actuality of his characters to make them empathic and flawed, and allow us to root for them and cringe when we realize that they simply don't have the wisdom to always act correctly.

This novel focuses on the aftermath of an uprising. The people of Paradise County have been encouraged, if not ordered, to grow garlic, and so garlic has infused itself into every aspect of the people's lives--their breath reeks of it, their celebrations tainted with it. But the governing officials of Paradise County are out to grab up every copper they can, and so out come the taxes for traveling the roads to the co-op warehouses, the penalties, the closures, and one day the garlic farmers have had enough and act out against the officials making their lives so full of hardship.

But of course the government retaliates, and we focus on some of their victims. First off is Gao Yang, who suffers enough with a blind daughter and a new son soon to be born, but he is beaten and brought to jail. One who escapes at first is Gao Ma, a former soldier who longs to marry Jinjun, whose family have agreed to marry her to someone else, but Gao Ma and Jinjun do not take the alternate marriage lightly, and trouble ensues from there. Jinjun's mother, Fourth Aunt of the Fang family, is also sought after in the police hunt since she won't stay quiet about her husband being run over by a government official, and the lives of these peasants intertwine through the courses of love and justice. The Fang family is cruel to both Jinjun and Gao Ma as they try to reject the lovers' vow to be married, and Gao Yang suffers humiliation and torment from his cellmates. Fourth Aunt holds a tyrranical post at home, but in jail she becomes a different creature altogether. At times bawdy and scatological, at other times heart-breaking and lyrical, Mo Yan gives us the entirety of the human spectrum with his novel, presenting to us both the base nature of life as well as its romantic pleasure. Powerful, haunting stuff.

4 out of 5 stars It sings.......2003-04-21

Despite a rather clunky translation by Goldblatt (a profusion of 10th-grade similes and things happening "all of a sudden") and arguable melodrama by the author (there are 119 instances of characters bursting into tears, by my count), this book delivers. The small dramas of the Gao and Yang families, set against a slightly larger but nonetheless miniscule backdrop of rural corruption (the tale wouldn't even merit a paragraph in the NY Times' regional roundup), gets steadily deeper as it progresses, illuminating the paradoxes of modern China and the unchanging demands of love, family, and duty. It's a tragic story which depicts both a very specific time and place and sheds light onto basic human truths.
Background details are handled effortlessly (for example, the great numbers of handicapped children born, presumably, to parents exposed to noxious agricultural chemicals sold by the uncaring rural cooperatives), but the real miracle is Mo Yan's pacing. He cuts rapidly between locations and times, but never too rapidly, striking a perfect balance between forwarding the plot and drawing back to offer perspective on the goings on. The full picture of alternating hopelessness and rebellion emerges slowly and tragically, and the disparate elements (an arranged marriage, a botched directive from central agricultural planners, a drunk driver with government connections) weave together into an elegant and moving whole.

5 out of 5 stars The Smell and the Fury -- For Strong Stomachs Only.......2001-05-17

The scent of garlic permeates this book, to such an extent that it becomes quite visceral and at times -- amazing for such a bulbhead as myself -- even nauseating. Both time and space are fragmented by the writer as he weaves back and forth among his stories of garlic farmers pitted against local corruption and their own at times cruel family traditions.

The central event in the book is an invasion and trashing by an angry mob of the local governmental offices. We do not see this event occur until the end of the book, yet it colors every moment in the lives of the Fang and Gao families of Paradise County. It is understandable that the Beijing government would suppress a novel that shows most of its local officials to be bloated satraps and its policement to be little better than thugs, applying cattle prods to their prisoners and beating them mercilessly.

Equally villainous, however, are the Fang family, who force their daughter to marry an old man in a three-in-one arranged marriage that guarantees that their crippled eldest son also gets a bride. In a grisly scene, the marriage deal finally goes through after both the daughter and her fiance commit suicide: Their bodies are dug up, their remains are mixed together, and they are re-interred in a single coffin.

This is not a pleasant book to read: It takes a strong stomach, especially in the prison episodes. At the same time, it is, I feel, an important book that is beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars A Undiscovered Masterpiece.......2001-01-10

I discovered Mo Yan and this title years ago through Amazon, when it was recommended as an "undiscovered" work. Sadly, it is still the case that very few people have read either The Garlic Ballads or Red Sorghum, Mo's other masterpiece, let alone heard of the author. This is tragic, given that he is immensely talented, one of the true literary masters writing today. The Garlic Ballads tells the tale of a group of Chinese peasants whose lives are dependent upon selling their garlic crop; when harvests exceed governmental estimates, officials curb the amount of garlic that can be brought to market, setting off a violent chain of events. Against this backdrop, Mo weaves presents three stories: that of two lovers, which dominates the novel, as well as a familial conflict and the relationship between two friends. It is no exaggeration to say that this is the Chinese equivalent of The Sound and the Fury or 100 Years of Solitude; Mo's voice is inventive, poetic and urgent, yet he never loses sight of the plot, making this book difficult to put down. Goldblatt also deserves a great deal of credit for his translation. I do not read Chinese, but I often have the sense in reading English translations, even of great works, that a great deal has been lost, that there is something missing from the original work. Goldblatt's translation is so good as to make the reader mistake this for an English novel; the prose is nearly flawless. Any reader interested in literature would be wise to pick up this novel, if just for the ending, which is unsettling yet poetically rendered, and will stick with the reader for years. Years from now, probably when Mo wins a Nobel, I am sure he will have a wide following, but for now, The Garlic Ballads is a novel that cries to be read.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Depressing.......2000-12-01

This is one of those book that makes you both depressed and inspired at the same time. Set in rural China, the Garlic Ballads explores the misfortune of ordinary Chinese farmers during the post revolutionary period. Having read this book for a Political Science class on China, it was interesting to see how the policies implemented in Beijing could harm the common people so severly. Because the government told these people to grow Garlic, a non-staple food, instead of rice for instance, when they couldn't sell it they were left with nothing. you cannot survive on Garlic. This poor regional planning by the PRC leads to the ruin of many lives. The book, while not overtly political, must have rubbed someone in Beijing the wrong way because it was banned in China. Great Book, Great Author!

      Book Description

. . . Where is the point of no return?
No one sees it coming or
      can tell you when.

When love reaches a point of no return, how does one respond to a fractured landscape and its tumbling uncertainties? In this poetic cycle, respected New Mexico writer Anne Valley-Fox looks for clues to the meaning of intimacy and the provenance of corruption. (“What made you blind? Why did you woo oblivion?”) In language by turns raucous, wry, tender and tough, these incisive narratives find voice in the mythology of the ordinary. The poems are sure, masterful, but not mere expositions of craft—they are made of passion and a willingness to risk. Her work resonates with a depth of metaphor that startles, delights and often exposes the raw facts of marriage as it actually lives. Theodore Roethke said that the poet's job is to lament & to praise—as this collection of poems surely reveals.

“Both sensual and spiritual, [these poems] know of joy and grief, of loss and redemption, of the mystery that hovers always beyond our grasp. With unforced artistry and an appealing clarity of style they present a moving tableau of the transitory fragments that make up a life; they are poems to fill the day with new awareness.”—R. W. French

      5 out of 5 stars A Passionate Enlightment.......2004-11-12

Professor Miranda Shaw, author of Passionate Enlightenment: Women in Tantric Buddhism, speaks of tantric Buddhism as the "techniques of transforming into a deity. . . combined with the tantric goal of attaining Buddhahood in this very life . . . speaking as a deity would speak: with words of insight, liberation and compassion."

By this standard, Anne Valley Fox must surely qualify as an authentic American tantrika, and her latest book of poems, Point of No Return, a natural tantric manifestation. Through her wise eyes, we see the diety not somewhere above us in the clouds, but right down here among us in the mud, blood, and tears of ordinary life. As if by magic, the pain, disappointment, and dashed hopes of a marriage gone wrong are transfigured into a finer fabric of understanding, forgiveness, and, yes, love. A triumph.

I gave this book to my 10 year-old niece Anna Hole, and she adored it. She especially connected to Seneca, the Indian maiden. What a good book. Anna gave it to her mother and father, who loved it too, and then once I read it I was really filled with admiration. Id love to give it to someone in Hollywood, and just tell them to read the first chapter, and I bet theyd be hooked. We need more entertainment like this. I look forward to reading more books in the series. From Sarah

                      Book Description

Will the Roman Catholic Church ever change its position on Women's ordination, contraception, clerical celibacy, or even infallibilty itself? Is change possible or are all teachings etched in stone? For the first time the documentation of these changes is compiled in a single volume. Expert commentators put the changing ideas into historical and theological contexts. This book is a fascinating reference for adult Catholics and for anyone interested in the history of religion.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Source Book.......2001-11-30

This is a well researched, well written book that exposes much of the hypocricy of some of Vatican thought, and puts a lie to the phrase that often comes out of Rome, "As we have always taught..." It definitely shows how Church doctrine has, as Rome says, "developed," over the years. It is also a very very instructive and accurate source on many of the issues that are of real importance to the People of Godde. It is written in clear and consice language, is easy for just about anyone to understand, and is worth every penny.

3 out of 5 stars Telling, but unsympathetic.......2001-07-19

This book uses two techniques, with differing effects, to illustrate its point. First, it uses actual quotes from past papal and magisterial pronouncements in order to paint a picture of the Church's opinion on any given topic at various times through history. This first technique is admirable and effective. The stars I give are merited because of this, and so the book is a useful reference tool, if nothing else.

The actual text of the book comes in the form of commentaries, which follow the aforementioned quotations. This text, as well as the introduction, tell more about the biases of the authors than of the church. Biased though, it may be, the opinions expressed are not invalid. They are, however, unbalanced. In the introduction of the book, the authors identify themselves as largely feminist activists who support new translations of Scripture that attempt to use gender-neutral language in every verse (leaving out he and she, and substituting "spouse" for husband or wife). I fail to see how such relanguaging does anything to help the feminist cause, as it only disguises real sexism that clearly existed in the first century and other times. I also find it curious that, when it suits their needs, Church documents are *not* rewritten in gender neutral terms, presumably so that early church "sexim" can be exposed. While I am sympathetic to the authors' aim at revealing such things, I would much rather they do in an intellectually honest fashion.

On the whole, if you are looking for a compendium of actual church documents (no amount of bias has altered the utility of the quotations that make up the lion's share of the book's merit) then this book is worth having. Better yet, once you have the book, look up their quotations for yourself to get a better historical perspective on what they selected.

1 out of 5 stars From the point of view of an historian. . ........2001-02-11

. . .this book is unacceptable.

I am not a Roman Catholic. I am a clergyman and an historian, with a keen interest and background in Church history. I also keep up-to-date on the various political, social, and religious points of view within Christianity.

Any serious scholar (Protestant OR Catholic) who has seriously studied the history of Christianity AND who is familiar with "who is writing what" these days, will immediately recognize that because many of the contributers to this volume are so far out of the mainstream of Catholic thought -- even liberal Catholic thought -- the ultimate usefulness and validity of the entire volume is called into question.

Each Christian Church or denomination has its own share of malcontents -- and the Catholic Church is no different. The difference here, is that compared to many other denominations, non-conforming and dissident Catholics are permitted a voice. If the reader doesn't believe me, try publically dissenting from "official" teaching in a liberal Protestant denomination, or in a Fundamentalist church.

There are certainly persons within the Catholic Church who disagree with Church teaching on key issues. But this volume would have been far more valuable if it had not limited its contributers to the radical fringe.

Sorry -- this isn't the way to properly dissent. No stars.

PS (Note to previous reviewer Rev. Chet Scalese -- by her own admission, one of the editors is NOT a Roman Catholic. This book is not a presentation by "honest" Catholics in good standing!)

5 out of 5 stars Hope for Catholicism.......2001-01-10

Contrary to those who have criticized this work (probably without even reading it), 'Catholic bashing' is anything but the point to be pressed. This work was written by two Catholic women who strongly believe in their faith.

The two authors attempt to point out how the Catholic Church has evolved it's teachings over the years from often times corrupt to a much more compassionate and liberating theology. In many ways this work gives hope to liberal Catholics who are troubled by what seems to be stagnant doctrine and seek change in their faith.

The contents include papal words and laws on: infallibility, scriptural interpretation, religious freedom, slavery, women in the clergy, science and much more. Each chapter goes through early church teacings to modern. After reading this work (as a non-Catholic), I have a new found respect for Pope John Paul II and his courage.

To those who find 'change' as a threat, I suggest reading the early church teachings and conduct and ask yourself 'Would I honestly wish to live in this realm of thought?'

I think we both know the answer.

1 out of 5 stars Malcontents Have Spoken.......2000-12-24

This is a book you will want to skip. Poorly written by an ideologue with an agenda. The worst sort of screed disguised as history. Brings to mind the "double speak" writings of the Chinese Communists.

I give this book 5 stars because it was very creative and scary.
I didn't want to put it down. This book was about a girl who
dies and needs help. The ghost asks a girl named Ally to help
her solve her mystery. If you like scary ghost stories or mysteries,

A book I love is The Ghost and Fossil Glen. You should really read it... it is really good and mysterious. I think it's the best book I've ever read in my life! I think a person who likes ghost stories, scary books and mysterious books would love this book like I do. My favorite character is Allie. She's my favorite because she's the main character and she's brave, adventurous, clever, and very smart. My favorite part is when Allie is getting chased by Raymond Gagney. The author of this book is Cynthia DeFelice. Her writing style is just like the book. It is good and mysterious. The genre is fiction. The book is about Allie trying to solve a murder case. You will have to read it yourself to see what happens. I think you will love it.

I saw the author PaleoJoe at a library presentation and he was excellent. The kids loved him and had to get his books. This is the second book in the series of chapter books--kid of like a Dinosaur CSI-- and the first 3 were all fantastic and we are waiting for the 4th. I read them with the kids and like them, too. If you or your kids like Nate the Great, its a sure hit and the perfect progression into longer chapter books.

Building the new wing at the high school stops when woolly mammoth bones are discovered at the construction site. A pair of "fossil detectives," archaeologists from the university, arrives to supervise the recovery of the bones. By piecing together clues, and the bones, the detectives form and test theories about how this mammoth died. While they follow the arguments and the evidence, young readers dig out mammoth "bones" of their own and assemble a woolly mammoth skeleton! This exciting kit includes 16 fossilized bones embedded in rock material, excavation tools, a tray of “created” fossils, a 40-page book, historical timelines, a pictorial glossary, and a peek-through window on the cover.

                                        Book Description

Who killed Bob Shafer, noted and notorious paleoanthropologist? When he disappears on the eve of his triumph over a rival scientist at a conference in an exotic East African city, suspicion of foul play emerges immediately, for Shafer had made many enemies. Discovery of his ravaged skeleton a year later in a remote fossil locale casts a web of mutual suspicion upon Shafer's many rivals, a wronged student, a jilted lover. Caught in the web are two young graduate students, he the son of the most feared man in the nation of Asalia, she an American struggling up from a lower-class background in a male-dominated field. Their growing mutual attraction is blighted by fear and mistrust as, one by one, the field of suspects narrows. Written from firsthand experience of fossil fieldwork, the story brings you face to face with the hazards and human conflicts of the search for our earliest ancestors.
