4 out of 5 stars Wild elves flesh out further history of Krynn.......2007-02-19

A solid and pleasurable read for those experienced in the Dragonlance world. This novel is divided into three parts, each telling a climatic event within the history of the Elderwild elves.
The first story touches upon events in the life of Kagonos, the first Pathfinder of the "wild" elves. Through his pact with a dragon, to his timely defeat of an orge horde, to his final separation from the "house" elves, Kagonos remains a fairly wooden character and extremely difficult to like. While there are some brief flashes of reverance and grief, this "founder" of the Kagonesti tribes only potrays stoicism and a bordering on rage-like anger. Through out his tale, Kagonos never encounters fear or doubt, he is never asked to change or develop. He is presented as an unfeeling machine and continues that feel to the end.
The second story arc is the best tale of the three and focuses on a young brave named Ashtaway, the nephew of the tribes current Pathfinder. What Ashtaway accomplishes in the history of Krynn is not as profound as what Kagonos did, but what he changed within himself and the mindset of his tribe is the better story. Battling through worry and revenge, Ashtaway confronts his own people to protect the life of a human. He has the opportunity to mend mistakes and couragously defend what is correct rather than what is easy. Compounded on the growth of the main character is the appeal of the foreigners that Ashtaway meets. Sir Kamford, Highbulp Toofer and Hammana have a life of there own, there own fear, doubts and goals. Add onto that a very well written battle sequence and this story trumps its counterparts.
The third story is a chronicle of survival, then revenge and then right back into survival. Here the story tells of our young protagonist, a Kagonesti elf named Iydahoe and his bouts with the empire of Istar. These events range from fourteen years before to the day of the Cataclysm. While our main character has some epiphanies about life and the right path to take, this story is actually driven by the events that are taking place around him. While the world is falling down about his shoulders, Iydahoe goes nearly insane and loses all hope. While this is a good place for drastic character development, Iydahoe is spared that inconvenience by an apparition that leads them to safety. With that considered this third tale had the ability to be just as powerful as the second but the transitions were rushed and the true weight of what the character was dealing with was only realized in a few aspects of his journey. The most intriguing aspect of Iydahoe's story in found in what actually took place during the infamous Cataclysm and the nightmarish days preceeding it.
All in all this is a fun supplemental book to the Dragonlance realm. The history of the Kagonesti separating from the Silvanesti elves, the role a single elf played in the war during the time of Huma and how the Kagonesti fought back from the brink of extinction during the time of the Cataclysm gives more life to the living, breathing world of Krynn.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but only half of it is outstanding........2005-01-06

I wished this book was not broken up in 3 different sections.

I wish it just dealt only with the start and the beginning of the wild elves and just left it with that, instead of jumping in time in Parts 2 and 3 over to Huma and the Land of Istar.

The introduction and the first Part is awesome reading. I loved every second of it. The first wild elf meets palandine (who is called by a different name in this book)/the good dragon god in the mountains where the ancient Ogres inhabit.

The Introduction and Part 1 of the book happens many thousands of years before The Land of Istar is torn down/The Cataclyism. This book is one of the first events of the entire Dragonlance storyline/timeline/Saga.

The 2nd and 3rd Parts of the book was pointless, and a total waste of time to read.

The 2nd Part of the book talks about some backstory to Huma and the 3rd Part of the book talks about some knights of Istar, which really has nothing to do with anything, and is not important at all to the overall storyline/timeline/saga.

Just read this book for the Introduction and Part 1, and forget about Parts 2 and 3.

So actually, this book is only about 100 or 150 pages long if you take out and completely ignore Parts 2 and 3.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2004-07-30

Niles has completed a huge story in a few pages with this novel. The time covered is amazing in itself, but the great thing about it is that it is like getting three short novels in one book. A very fun read! The only thing I would like to have seen is three books instead of one. The individual "Pathfinder" stories were good but a longer more in depth story would have been even better. Still, a great, easy, read.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting history of origins of the Wild Elves.......2003-12-12

This is a very well-written book that gives the history of the Kagonesti, or Wild Elves, by following the story of three separate characters who lived in three different ages. This book should be of interest to Dragonlance fans, but might seem a little esoteric to people with little or no knowledge of the world of Krynn and its inhabitants.

This book does a great job of giving the story of the origins of the Kagonesti and how they broke off from the other elves on Krynn. This first part was the best in the book.

The second and third parts, while still interesting, are not quite as good. They tell of the first positive interaction with humans and the days leading up to the Cataclysm. I would really have liked to see another part that leads closer to the War of the Lance and shows how the Kagonesti came to be servants among the other elven nations. This book leaves that question unanswered.

All that being said, Niles is a wonderful author and writes a good book.

5 out of 5 stars a great read........2003-03-20

1 out of 5 stars The ending is not worth the investment.......2007-05-20

Just a heads up for those just starting out on this series: the ending is a complete disappointment! There is no triumph, no victory and very little joy in the outcome of the final battle. If all you are concerned about is the fate of the love story, then by all accounts this is the series for you. However, if you feel that the sacrifice, suffering and faith of strong, good people should be rewarded in the end....then this is definitely not a series you will enjoy.

The ending is happy in only one context--the lovers have their cake and eat it to. But I ask the question: what about everyone else? All of Erin's family and friends die, and to what purpose? So that light and dark might realize that they are different sides of the same coin....that in reality there is no such thing as good and evil? This is a sad statement about our morality if we are content with an ending like that.

In fairness, I liked the books up until the very end. But I get the feeling that Ms Sagara had come as far as she could without beating the horse to death, and she reached an impasse. It is my opinion that there was no logical or graceful way for her to wrap her story up and she chose the easiest route possible. Otherwise there is no explanation for the lengthy efforts she went to to convince us of the indelible goodness of the light and the absolute perfidy of the dark, if she intended all along to unite them into one grey, disappointing god.

1 out of 5 stars You have got to be kidding me.......2007-04-04

Did everyone else read a different book? *sigh* I forced myself to read this one because I ordered it Interlibrary loan and it was due back in only a couple of days. Thank goodness I didn't buy it. Perhaps I didn't enjoy it because I just took the book at face value and didn't bother with including an overlying meaning to what the text COULD have mean (I mean, really--in that case we can pretend EVERY book out there has a double meaning).

The story flipped from person to person and skipped years at a time in just a manner of a few pages. The reader then had to flip back and forth between pages just to figure out how old, whose talking, what's going on. I perfer my books to flow. This whole light and dark think was confusing. Even the ending and alter stuff was confusing. Again, I had to read and reread just to get the gist of it. Again--I perfer my books to flow.

Needless to say, I won't revisit this author.

      4 out of 5 stars A Dark read.......2006-11-04

This book had me literally weeping by page 12, which is a difficult feat for an author to do. I cared that much about the main character that quickly. The rest of the book is just as dark, just as heart wrenching. To be honest, I had to put it down several times, pick up something light to read, then go back to it, just to manage.

This is an incredible story, very profound, rich in detail, extreme in emotion. Good vs Evil, Dark vs light, heart vs soul. More, how one extreme can not exist without the other.

Four stars only because this is not a stand-alone book, you'll need the next two if you want to complete the journey. Be warned, this is not an easy trip.

5 out of 5 stars Approach with an open mind.......2006-06-09

Michelle Sagara West herself in the introduction states that a reader had once equated the romance between Erin, the heroine, and Stefanos, the (anti-?)hero as a type of Beauty and the Beast. I agree but the story is so much deeper and more compelling. Initially, the book seems complex because it sets the stage for the "main" storyline by explaining the world of "Light" and "Dark." As mentioned by other reviewers, the 2nd half is simpler in its focus on the romance but upon rereading the book several times, I personally saw a parallel between the romance and the struggle of the Light and the Dark. I am still waiting for books 3 and 4 of the series because I NEED to know what happens to Erin and Stefanos.
This book was one of Ms. West's earliest works so that if you read the Sun Sword series, you will recognize the focus on the characters but the plot is sparer and more direct. I found it refreshing because it made me focus more on the relationship between Erin and Stefanos. If one doesn't expect the level of intricacy of the Sun Sword series, one will find the book a delight.

      4 out of 5 stars What a great book 4 & 1/2 stars .......2004-09-16

I found this book in a used book store years ago, and I am so glad I picked it up! It started off rather slow, but as soon as Erin meets the First Servant of the Dark Lord it became such an unsually compelling love story. Most of the book is a dark and rather tragic romance between Erin and Lord Stefanos. They can't help but be both repelled and fascinated by the conflicting nature of the other, as they find themselves compromising what they've always believed in to be together. It took me years to finish the series because books 3 and 4 are so expensive, but if you can get your hands on them, I recommend all four- they don't disappoint. These are the types of books you can't let go of even days after you finish the last page.

        Book Description

When faced with translating the character 'qi', students of Chinese culture, medicine, martial arts, and a wide range of traditional arts and sciences face one of the most perplexing challenges. There would seem to be no direct way to express the ancient metaphysical concept succinctly in English; in fact, it hasn't previously been explored intensively.

In their first book, Who Can Ride the Dragon?, the authors posed the question of qi's meaning and offered a brief, introductory response. Here, they distill many years of research and investigation, allowing readers to discover the vast and ancient roots of this ancient word and providing ample material with which they can form their own understanding.

Scholarly, yet colloquial, it examines qi's linguistic and literary roots, stretching back through the shadowy mists of Chinese precivilization. It traces the development of the concept of qi through a number of related traditional Chinese disciplines including painting, poetry, calligraphy, dance, medicine, qi gong, and martial arts. Finally, it examines the depth and breadth of qi as manifested in life's cycles.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Condensing Infinity-- A Tremendous Synopsis of Qi.......2004-05-04

Qi/ki/chi/c'hi-- it is at the center of so many aspects
        of Chinese philosophy/religion/ethical/moral/cultural-- of
everything. I have personally been seeking the definition of Qi
from a martial arts standpoint, taken years to formulate my
own definition and understanding--and this book has done a
tremendous job of condensing an infinitely complex concept
and given it a conceptual framework.

Well and clearly written, this book explores the origins of the
term 'Qi' in Chinese history, and explores this concept
throughout a number of aspects of Chinese history and culture.
Yu Huan Zhang, the author, concisely explains the central role
of the concept of Qi in Chinese philosophy, religion, medicine,
art, martial arts, qigong, literature, science, and others.
After reading this work, one realizes that one's understanding
of qi can never be complete, and will always be dictated by
the context. Appropriately, this book both expanded my
awareness of the concept of qi, enhanced my understanding,
yet failed to provide a coherent, simplistic answer.

Before reading this book, I had come to the conclusion that
there really was no such thing as qi. I was right, and I
was wrong. But I feel significantly closer to true
        understanding.

Highly recommended! My only criticism is that for such a short
book, too much time was spent on extended quotes. Yes, they
added to the text as examples, but I would also like to have
seen more in-depth exploration of major concepts. If space was
a limitation, then I would have preferred more brief quotes, and
        more narrative exploration.

This is a must read for anyone seeking to understand the concept
of Qi, that has yet to find the answer, or is not sure of the
answer. Or anyone who is interested in better understanding
the root of Chinese culture and thought.

The recipes and art in this book are really provocative of Provence. Mr. Pyes and Mr. Van Gough make a good team. Mr. Van Gough's illustrations have an exactitude that you want art to have; and Mr. Pyes writing is very impressionistic, just right for the chemistry of cooking. Too bad this book is out of print!

        Book Description

Three semiautomatic battle rifles had been designed by the mid-1930s, but only two reached the production stage. This is the story of the third, the SAFN-49 which did see production and service until the Nazis were forced out of Belgium and defeated.

Designed in the mid-1930s by Dieudonn, J. Saive, a former assistant to the great firearms designer, John M. Browning, the SAFN-49 was kept out of production by the Nazi invasion of the Low Countries in May 1940. Saive and certain of his colleagues fled to England with the engineering drawings and were immediately put to work by the British on variety of armament development projects. Work on the new semiautomatic battle rifle resumed late in the war and by mid-1945, prototypes in .30-06 caliber ready for testing. Ammunition problems delayed the project and by the time the solution was found, the British had moved on to other designs. But the Fabrique Nationale factory persevered and ultimately, the SAFN-49 was built in four different calibers and adopted by a number of countries.

Today, the SAFN-49 is sought after by collectors of military battle rifles is also little known. The FN factory has rarely released information about any of its projects. But the author, a collector of SAFN-49s for years, by gathering information from secondary sources and examining well over 70 SAFN-49 rifles in detail has produced a comprehensive guide for both collectors and shooters.

The author begins with a complete history of the rifle's development and use, followed by an extensive analysis using the part-by-part system for which North Cape Publications has become well known, of every part in each rifle by each of the four calibers. A chapter is devoted to the first analysis ever of the sniper version of the rifle, including the scopes and mount which have never been completely described in an English-language publication before.

For shooters, the author tells how to improve the rifle's already fine accuracy to that approaching a fine target rifle, with simple fixes. Shooting positions and the use of a good shooting sling something not taught in most European armies are included. Complete assembly/disassembly instructions are included as are maintenance instructions for conditions ranging from the target range to the battlefield.

The SAFN-49 Battle Rifle is in large format (8 x10.5 inches) and is illustrated with over 100 photographs and line drawings.

A humorous but extremely candid autobiography encompassing Ms. Craig's show business career. Starting as the youngest member of the famed Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and segueing to a Hollywood movie and TV career, she shares her experiences both on and offscreen with Elvis, Bill Bixby, Howard Hughes, Mort Sahl, James Coburn and numerous others. Ms. Craig appeared as the green Orion slave girl in Star Trek as well as playing "Batgirl" in the Batman TV series.

                  4 out of 5 stars a good effort from a classy woman.......2006-01-30

From Elvis to Howard Hughes to Batman to Spock, Yvonne Craig has led an interesting life. She retells her story, although not quite bringing it to a really interesting level. I was left wanting just a bit more, as Ms. Craig worked and socialized with many legendary figures. She does a solid job of recapping her life, but always seems to be holding back some interesting details.
Of course, that is her choice and maybe that is exactly how she wanted it. She discusses ballet, Batgirl, Star Trek, working with Elvis and other aspects of her life. She paints a pretty good picture of her life.
Having met Ms. Craig several times, I think this book is an excellent reflection of her personality. She is open, funny and honest about the general stuff, but politely quiet about other things. In a way, it is refreshing not to read a tell-all.

5 out of 5 stars Witty memoir from the original Dominoed Dare-Doll.......2003-09-15

This is a cut above the standard Hollywood autobiography, probably due in large part to Yvonne Craig's being a cut above your standard issue Hollywood starlet. Unaffected and welcoming in person, this book is the next best thing to a good long chat with TV's Batgirl. If you're as interested in Yvonne the person as in Batgirl the comic book icon, then you'll be more than rewarded for your time. NOTE: this book is also available new through Yvonne Craig's website, www.yvonnecraig.com, which I feel obligated to mention due to some used book dealers here trying to con people out of $200. Her fans don't deserve to be preyed upon in this fashion.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Joy To Read.......2002-12-11

Before opening Yvonne Craig's book "From Ballet To The Batcave And Beyond," I had read all the comments by readers, who had complained that too much of the book dealt with the ballet and with people whom Ms. Craig met while making movies and doing guest appearances on old television shows. Some seemed disappointed that there was nothing risque or "juicy," and that too many chapters were dedicated to subjects in which people who would read an Yvonne Craig autobiography would not be interested. I also read that there wasn't enough in the book about the "Batman" series. So, quite frankly, being a HUGE "Batman" fan, I half-expected to be bored by much, if not most, of this book.
                  WRONG!
Ms. Craig has such a delightful writing style, intelligence, a great vocabulary and a wonderful sense of humor, that I found the ENTIRE book just a JOY to read. So much so, that I, who know nothing about, and have virtually no interest in, the ballet, found even *those* sections of the book interesting and entertaining. And, although I am not what one might call an "animal lover," I immensely enjoyed her chapter dedicated to the animals in her life through the years.
Even her literary treatments of those individuals in Hollywood of whom she does not or did not seem to think very highly -- Lee Majors, Rudy Vallee, William Shatner, Charles Bronson -- were tasteful, and done with class and just the right amount of humor.

At the risk of sounding corny or something, it is apparent to me that there was once a May day when our Heavenly Father must have been quite pleased with this world, for on that day He gave us a most remarkable and special gift which we call "Yvonne."

                  5 out of 5 stars Honest Hollywood.......2002-01-28

Yvonne was as honest and candid as she could be in this book. Not many people writing their autobiography can do so without telling a bunch of "punched up" stories to sell copies. This is a true look at behind the scenes of some of the popular TV shows, and movies of their times. I laughed out loud more than once reading this book, and sure others will too, if the get her humor. How many people are willing to tell about Capt. Kirks "secret", or shed any light (however small) on Howard Huges? I waited awhile to read this one, and find it well worth the wait.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, well written, sometimes boring, but worthwhile.......2001-12-03

It's a fun read. I like the fact that Yvonne didn't use a co-writer like most celebs. Her words are all her own and she has an excellent vocabulary (though at times, using some pretentious adjectives, I thought; although perhaps this is her usual style of speaking, I dunno.) The most interesting parts of the book to me were her recollections of working on Batman and Star Trek, as well as the guest shots she did on such classic shows as Mod Squad and Dobie Gillis. It's great to have an insider's view of the stars and the shooting conditions, including her Elvis movies and her perspectives on his personality, which were fascinating. Personally, I would have preferred even more of that, especially the Batman days, because Batgirl is what Yvonne is mostly known for - she basically retired from show biz after that. Some of her memories are the same ones depicted by Adam West and Burt Ward in their books (with humorously different perspectives), and her memories of Batman's large list of guest star villains are opinionated but too few and too short. Also there's no annotated episode guide (probably because West did it first, and she was only in the last season) and only a few memories of specific episodes. I expected more of that stuff from her since I believed prior to purchase that the majority of the book would cover Batman. Instead, there are some chapters I didn't find very interesting (about ballet and such) and will skip in the future. To be fair, the word 'ballet' is in the title, after all - but I felt that too many chapters were devoted to things that the majority people who buy this book would not have a large degree of interest in.

Overall, Yvonne conveys the characteristics of being an astute, intelligent, earthy, and ego-free person who is not afraid to tell it like it is (or was) concerning the various celebrities she's worked with (especially Charles Bronson, Rudy Vallee, and William Shatner, all of whom she thought were jerks). Although I must add this: in West's book (and particularly Ward's), they humorously and candidly described a lot of their sexual escapades in those days, being members of "the beautiful elite" as they were at the time (as Yvonne was too), and those risque stories made their books more interesting. That kind of stuff is totally absent from Yvonne's memoirs. She seems to be rather like her Barbara Gordon character - prim and proper, at least as far as kissing and telling, and certainly in her use of 'colorful' language. The raciest she gets is to mention that Adam West once touched her breast, and that she wished Aaron Spelling (of all people) had asked her out! I suppose this is just me 'being a guy' (i.e. shallow), and if so, then Yvonne's book will primarily appeal to women, who probably don't want to hear the risque stuff. Perhaps I had the wrong preconception of what would be in the book, after reading West's and Ward's ego-filled (though entertaining) books and also seeing Yvonne's sexy open-legged cover shot. As it turns out, she's not interested in disclosing the types of things that they did, and she would prefer to talk about her ballet dancing and knitting. But that's fine; it's her book and her life after all, and she perhaps feels that those types of tales would be mere sales gimmicks. Or maybe there's no tales to tell! Anyway, she's candid in all other respects, has an endearing and down-to-earth style of writing, and devotes an adequate amount of time to Batman for the fans. She even divulges personal things like the fact that she can't swim and refers to herself as a "sinker", which I found touching since I'm the same way.

Yvonne's book is a worthwhile purchase and a good late-night read. An additional note: the book (at least my copy) is cheaply bound by Kudu Press. On the second reading, the pages, particularly the picture pages, started to fall out. The book really can't be bent very wide at all without this happening. It's not that uncommon, but a little annoying considering the rather high price for this paperback.
