Then her business partner, Jack Vanzetti, flies out to tell her that someone has been selling military secrets to the Chinese and that her least-favorite ex, muckraking reporter Lyle Gold, has been fingered as the guilty party. With the country in a state of patriotic panic, nobody is willing to take Lyle's side. By stepping in to defend him, Vanzetti & Boothe could finally have the big win they need in order to consult on a presidential campaign. As sharp and irreverent as its heroinea woman who's willing to take on the fight of her life armed only with brains, charm, and a couple of bottles of champagneThe Latest Bombshell is a witty, savvy debut.
Customer Reviews:
a fun, topical read for election season.......2004-10-14
OK.......2003-12-18
Mitchell makes the mistake of telling not showing. Their are many positive personality traits to Kate, but we hear about them in narrative rather than in dialogue. I needed to hear some of her intelligence, wit, and media smarts. This did not come through to me. She becomes just like every other mediocre heroine I've ever read. There is nothing to separate her from everyone else, and since this is the story of Kate, it makes for a very average read.
The humor is trite, the characters are forgetable- I even think Mitchell forgets why she introduced certain characters. Th eplot is definately good, but the story that goes along with it isn't.
A Toast to Kate Booth!.......2003-10-21
Shallow Book Written By Talking Head.......2003-08-28
The problem she has is that good fiction still needs to be plausible and the story needs to make sense. This book, which is essentially about a government plot to frame a reporter on a trumped up espionage case fails those tests. The story goes a bit too far over the top. More importantly, the narrator's perspective as a PR professional/talking head on television is hard to take. In this case, the writer has written a novel in the first person where the main character is shallow and unlikeable. She comes off as a ditzy PR person more interested in fluff and yet another example of the Washington elite's lack of understanding of the rest of the world.
The positive part of the book is that it is paced well and easy to read. Yes, you can read this on the beach, but the impression that it will make on you won't last as long as the tan or sunburn you might get while reading it.
Great character, good understanding of D.C. politics.......2003-07-08
Author Michele Mitchell knows her Washington D.C. politics. The who-do-you-know and where can you take me atmosphere of D.C. comes through solidly. She also grasps our national intolerance for uncertainty. If the Pentagon says Gold is guilty, only a traitor would believe him innocent--right? More importantly, though, Mitchell writes a compelling story. Kate Boothe is a sympathetic heroine, with her fears that her boyfriend has abandoned her for the latest blonde, her concerns over what her mother will think when political operatives taint her as a ..., and outright fear when the IRS breaths down her neck after being unleashed by an aggressive White House.
Warning--THE LATEST BOMBSHELL has little sympathy for talk radio, Attorneys General who take their guidance from the Old Testament rather than from the U.S. Constitution, or those who believe that our basic rights must be thrown away to protect Americanism. Even if you don't like the politics, though, the novel is worth reading for its insights into the way the U.S. government is run--and for its intriguing lead character. Very nice.

Broken We Kneel: Reflections on Faith and Citizenship
Diana Butler Bass Manufacturer: Jossey-Bass ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0787972843 |
Book Description
Drawing on her personal experience as well as her knowledge of religious history, Diana Butler Bass examines the contours of the uniquely American relationship between church and state, Christian identity and patriotism, citizenship and congregational life. Broken We Kneel attempts to answer the central question that so many are struggling with in this age of terror: “To whom do Christians owe their deepest allegiance? God or country?” In writing both impassioned and historically informed, Bass, who lives outside of Washington, D.C., reflects on current events, personal experiences, and political questions that have sharpened the tensions between serious faith and national imperatives. This book incorporates the author’s own rich experience of faith, her vocation as a writer and teacher, and her roles as wife, mother, and churchgoer into a larger conversation with Christian practice and contemporary political issues. Broken We Kneel is a call to remember that the core of Christian identity is not always compatible with national political policies.Customer Reviews:

Good book on faith and citizenship.......2004-09-15
You will discover the truth about September 11, 2001.......2004-06-18
Indeed, though Butler Bass bills her book as a lament, it is equally a gentle reminder that Christians are aliens in the City of Man, and that bombs falling on Iraq and Afghanistan can neither return our missing loved ones nor answer our own prayers for healing. She also offers hope that through renewed commitment to hospitality in the tradition of Jesus, we may strengthen our citizenship in the City of God.
God is speaking to us, even now whispering good news of comfort and hope. If September 11 challenged you as a Christian, Diana Butler Bass will help you to listen to God again. Buy this book now.
A timely book of true hope and courage.......2004-05-14
Broken we walk.......2004-05-09
A meditation framed on the experience of conflict with the Washington D.C. congregation on whose pastoral staff she was serving at the time, the chapters will call to mind the works which indelibly marked the path of Christianity in the 20th century, whether theatrical, like 'Murder in the Cathedral' or 'A Man for All Seasons', confessional like Merton's letters and meditations on the American war against Vietnam; but the language is not the language of the polemic or the theatre or even autobiography, but the language of lament, of exile, even of excommunication. There is no ease in such language, and there are no simplifications in the book, which opens with the author's confession to her (Episcopal) priest that she had removed the United We Stand sign from the church entryway, because it was a call to vengeance and to a national crusade. When the priest informs her that the church belongs to the congregation, she responds that it's God's church, and from there, travels from the powerful political congregation which dedicates its faith to nation to the celebration of Easter some 20 months later in an inner city church three blocks from the White House.
Those who seek the company of the suffering servant of which the gospels speak, rather than the Nordic warrior messiah that stands at the center of the American war cult as much as he did at the heart of the German Church of the Third Reich, will find a familiar voice & a kindred heart in 'Broken We Kneel'.

Today I Am A Boy Lp
David Hays Manufacturer: Simon & Schuster ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0743204328 |
Book Description
"Can I now, a white-haired man who gets into the movies at reduced cost, do I have any magic words left? Can I get a miracle? If I can recall my youth and understand it, that may be the miracle I seek now."
When David Hays was 66 and had joined a synagogue for the first time in over fifty years, he decided to study Hebrew and be a bar mitzvah. And so this world-renowned theatrical designer, founder of the legendary National Theatre of the Deaf, father of two grown children and coauthor of the bestselling My Old Man and the Sea, borrowed his grandson's beginner's Hebrew workbook and joined a class of twelve-year-olds. It launched a wondrous journey of faith and community.
In Today I Am a Boy, Hays's new world begins to intersect with his own history: on Yom Kippur, Hays, who has sailed around Cape Horn with his son, reads the story of Jonah to the congregation and gives a sermon on the Old Testament and the sea. His long-dormant love of learning is wholly rekindled. At the stage of life when most of us begin to slow down, Hays feels more alive than ever, rejuvenated by newfound connections to his youth and faith.
Today I Am a Boy is a brave, clear-eyed and joyous examination of life.
Customer Reviews:
Should've stuck to the topic, IMO.......2001-04-12
I was really looking forward to reading about a 66-year-old man's journey into spirituality and rediscovery of Judaism, rather than a name-dropping autobiography.
What little Mr. Hays did write about his spiritual journey back into Judaism was sparse, and even his way off-topic autobiographical sections didn't include much of his family's, friends',or peers' reactions to his becoming a Bar Mitzvah, which to me would have been very interesting.
He also didn't talk much at all about contemporary Jewish renewal and problems of assimilation and how others might, as he did, find meaning in a religious path they've ignored or rejected.
Why, instead, should I care that he went back for a school reunion and one of his class members won the Nobel Prize? Why should I have to wade through the life stories of some of his uninteresting relatives who are not even marginally part of his spiritual story?
In this catch-all manuscript, Mr. Hays also tangentially subjects the reader to an entire fantasy theatrical piece he has imagined about a grown-up Anne Frank (for which I wouldn't buy a ticket, BTW).
What we also get is too much information and commentary about the 12- and 13-year-olds in his class, including an inappropriate (IMO) dwelling on one of the pubescent girls about whom Mr. Hays admitted over and over he had major sexual fantasies.
Great story of a great journey.......2001-01-02
David Hays has a surfeit of academic, personal, and professional accomplishments. In his sixties, he was semi-retired, kids grown, had good health and a happy family life. His mind is unquestioningly fertile (yet organized) and he seems to embrace new experiences. As a child he gazed into a mud bubble, and glimpsed eternity. As an adult he throws himself into the grass in his back yard, in order to look more closely at the earth. His life was full, and meaningful, but he does not brag, and he is likable from the outset.
Rather than rest on his not inconsiderable laurels, he decides to become a Bar Mitzvah, joining a class of local eleven and twelve-year olds - in order to devote himself to study with his congregation's rabbi, Doug, for more than a year. It is this journey - and there is a steady unfolding, with no outburst of religiosity - that forms the starting point for this wonderful narrative.
Hays has an ability to tell you a lot about himself by telling you about other people. He respects himself, and he respects others. He is never boring. His parents, in-laws, grown children, grandchildren, his wide circle of friends and acquaintances, and his classmates are interesting to him, and worthy of reportage. He lets you in on these people and their lives and their histories with unstinting (and never maudlin) respect, even awe. In doing this you find out a lot about Hays and his subjects. Their privacy is never violated, and their dignity is sustained.
There is uncloying, laugh-out-loud humor throughout. Family lore emerges, and it is often funny. Hays delights in his wife Leonora's knack of elegantly summing up a situation with a trenchant malapropism. Of his new-found fervor for religious study, she says, "He hooked, line and sinker!" Of the Bahamas: "It's a third-war country." He also shares his family history, including a terrific (true) story, "How my family saved Israel." His feelings and observations as a sensitive member of his class (of the kids at recess he marvels, "They always know where to go.") - and his relationship with his wonderful rabbi - are a pleasure to watch unfold.
Hays includes a piece on Anne Frank that is dramatic, thoughtful, and not at all funny. It is appropriately included, given that the concerns of an adult approaching his bar mitzvah are different from those of a child. And at one point, he attends a Harvard reunion - which maybe could have been left out of this book, with no loss of substance to this great story.
In all, a wonderful book.
