This book is a romance; "The Lion's Skin begins: Mr. Caryll, lately from Rome, stood by the window, looking out over the rain-swept, steaming quays to Notre-Dame on the island yonder. Overhead rolled and crackled the artillery of an April thunderstorm, and Mr. Caryll, looking out upon Paris in her shroud of rain under her pall of thundercloud, felt himself at harmony with nature. Over his heart, too, the gloom of storm was lowering, just as in his heart it was still little more than April-time."

        Book Description

1926. After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. It took Sabatini roughly a quarter of century of hard work before he attained success with Scaramouche in 1921. This brilliant novel of the French Revolution became an international bestseller. It was followed by the equally successful Captain Blood in 1922. A prolific writer, he produced about a book a year. The Lion's Skin begins: Mr. "The man that once did sell the lion's skin while the beast lived, was killed with hunting him. Remember that!" His back to the wall, the shadow of the noose over him, Justin Caryll flung these words at the brother who sought to destroy him. Since childhood and his mother's cruel death, young Caryll had been bred in France by his guardians for one purpose -- to wreak their vengeance on the father who had never known him. But Caryll did not complete his mission. Instead, he sailed for England and plunged into a maelstrom of dissension and revolt that teemed with danger for him -- and for beautiful woman who loved him.

Money and politics! Treachery, romance, betrayal, and snobbery. Unrequited love! Justin Carryll, brought up in France after his real father abandoned him and his mother in 1690, has been schooled all his life to find and destroy that same father. Lord Ostermore, ruined in the South Sea Bubble and flailing desperately in attempts to regain his fortune, has been plotting secretly with the Jacobite Pretender to the English throne. Now Justin is in England for the first time, carrying a message that will suck Lord Ostermore into a doomed conspiracy against the King of England. Justin will betray the betrayer; but as he arrives he is caught up in a web of deceit and betrayal by others; and he falls hopelessly in love with a woman who is the ward of, and depends upon, the very man he would destroy. And now things get truly complicated.... Vintage Sabatini, combining swashbuckling adventure, spies and counterspies, and a comedy of manners.

        2 out of 5 stars A sin of Sabatini's literary nonage.......2003-06-12

After scoring hits two decades into his career with Scaramouche and Captain Blood, Sabatini's American publishers began reprinting some of his earlier works, though he tried to suppress the ones he thought inferior. But even those were being brought across the Atlantic and he eventually agreed to their republication as well, only with an apologetic preface branding them "sins of [his] literary nonage" that he would rather "bury in oblivion." The Lion's Skin is one of those books.

Justin Caryll was raised by his guardian, Sir Richard, knowing neither his deceased mother nor his father, the Earl of Ostermore. Ostermore and Sir Richard had been friends and suitors of the same woman, and Richard grew to hate his friend after the former won the French lady and then went back to England, abandoning her pregnant and alone. At her dying request, Richard raised her son, and Caryll was taught that one day he would be called upon to exact revenge on his father.

As the book begins, Justin Caryll is an adult who journeys to England with the means to ruin his father, only he has misgivings about the whole idea. As he tries to decide what to do, he makes Ostermore's acquaintance, earns the enmity of Ostermore's son -- Viscount Rotherby -- and gets on rather well with Ostermore's ward, Hortensia Winthrop (what a name!). Meanwhile, he is rightfully suspected by his enemies of being a Jacobite agent and he realizes that there is very little to hate in his mild-mannered father.

In the end, Rotherby and a few others think they have what they need to get Caryll out of the way, but too late they learn the meaning of that phrase from Henry V that inspired the title, and which Caryll actually quotes: "the man that once did sell the lion's skin/while the beast liv'd, was killed with hunting him."

The story is fairly good, the writing mediocre, and the historical accuracy not all that great (I think). Still, it's entertaining.

Aspects of this remind me of other Sabatini novels, making me wonder whether he re-wrote certain elements into later works. Ostermore is a lot like the Lord of Gavrillac and the Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr in Scaramouche, and there are similarities to Master-At-Arms and a few other books as well.

The Lion's Skin is worth a read, but only after you've covered Sabatini's better novels first.

5 out of 5 stars Guns of Tanith lives up to the previous four Gaunt novels.......2004-08-06

In this fifth installment of the Gaunt's Ghosts Saga, Abnett introduces us to the world of Phantine. Phantine is a world where everyone lives on aerial hive-installations which float above the toxic atmosphere that comprises most of the world. Phantine also seem to be a major contributer of promethium --- a form of fuel which is invaluable to the forces of the Imperium --- for the Sabbat Systems. It is also in this novel, Guns of Tanith, that Abnett introduces the Tanith's main opponent who are as skillful and disciplined a unit as Gaunt's own men: The Blood Pact.

The Blood Pact is one of the better scifi creations I've ever read. This elite unit of Chaos-worshipping soldiers are almost the mirror-image of what the Tanith regiment has been described so far. Abnett's writing continues to impress and with the new location and its special environment, Abnett shows that he can write battle scenes that is not just a muddy, confusing amalgam of men fighting it out. Guns of Tanith showcases the Tanith's skills as elite, light infantrymen. This novel has more of a special-ops feel to it than the previous four novels.

In the end, Guns of Tanith is another winner in Abnett's growing portfolio of scifi novels. I was wholly impressed and satisfied by this story and will continue on to the next novel in this series.

          5 out of 5 stars Phantine.......2004-07-15

This is a fantastic book, first page, to the last! I highly recommend picking up The Guns of Tanith. Gaunt and the Ghosts have been ordered to help liberate the domed cities of Pantine from an elite chaos corps called The Blood Pact. Several of the Ghosts best soldiers are ordered to infiltrate the planet's Capital and assasinate a high ranking chaos (demon) officer named Gaur. Gaur finds a group of the assasins and learns about the plot, making it that much harder to accomplish the task. Please read, you won't be dissappointed.

          Regards,
          Aleksandr

5 out of 5 stars Other great Gaunt's Ghosts novel by Dan Abnett.......2003-05-12

The fifth book in the Gaunt's Ghosts series, and again we see the ghosts struggle with internal and external problems. The book starts off with the ghosts assigned to other impossible task; the task is a aerial assault over the world of Phantine. The world of Phantine is rich with promethium, pollution and loads of choas troops, the blood pact. Like all the other great Ghosts novels, Abnett takes little time in getting us into the action and turmoil. The guns of Tanith is one of the stronger books in the series, even with about a hundred pages in the middle with little to no action (I loved this part, by the way, this NOT sarcasim either), it still doesn't take away the intense level which all the other Ghost novels have. This is an awesome series and Guns of Tanith is other great addition. Highly recommend series.

5 out of 5 stars Abnett does it again.......2002-05-07

Once more, Gaunt's Ghosts are participating in the liberation of a world from the forces of Chaos. This time, there are some very different major obstacles to overcome if they are to win.

Phandine is an industrial world, and has been so for centuries. The planet has been so raped as to be uninhabitable save in extreme elevations, and even then the air is toxic and domes are required to survive. The planet is essential to the war effort through provision of fuel and similar necessary chemicals.

Gaunt and Company are tasked with subduing one of three domes on one of the various habitats. As has come to be the norm for them, the Ghosts quickly find that their plans are not quite achievable. fortunately, they are masters of improvisation, and it helps to get a little precognition before the battle.

While they always seem to be in hard-fought battles, this time they are facing some truly talented opposition in the Blood Pact. Not only these chaos troopers are after them, though, as there are aliens that have allied themselves with the Blood Pact in hating humanity. And since the Blood Pact have held this world for some time, you can be sure that they have prepared well to defend it.

Abnett consistently puts out high-quality work. All the Gaunt's Ghosts novels are above par, and they are the best of the Warhammer 40k novels (only Abnett's Eisenhorn novels come close). If you have tried any of the other Ghosts novels, you'll find nothing in this one to disappoint.

          4 out of 5 stars Nite-wing or Nightwing?.......2005-08-04

Nightwing, with much hard work, has finally made Bludhaven his own; Nightwing is now to Bludhaven what Batman is to Gotham. Dick Grayson is the protector of the few innocents that still grace the streets of Bludhaven, an urban cesspool that makes Gotham look like a good site for a Girl Scout meeting.

Superman makes an appearance early in the book, teaming up with Nightwing to pay Roland Desmond a visit. The relationship between Nightwing and Superman is very different from that of Batman and Superman. As one reviewer has already aptly pointed out, both Batman and Robin teamed up with Superman quite often. Robin, Dick Grayson, developed a stronger trust of Superman and invites his help. Batman views Superman as a hindrance.

One of my favorite characters is the blond-headed "Nitewing" who busts up criminals in true vigilante fashion. He is utterly obsessed and I eagerly await new books that reveal the reason he battles crime so fiercely. How will Chief Redhorn utilize the aid of this Nite-wing? And what will happen when the two Nightwings finally confront one another?

Another good series of plot twists, and a crime boss who refuses to fade away, the Nightwing series shows great promise. I've liked both books I've ordered so far.

5 out of 5 stars Nightwing At His Best!.......2004-06-08

Chuck Dixon's run on the monthly "Nightwing" books with artists Scott McDaniel and Karl Story are among the best runs by a creative team ever. The trio created a likable lead character in the former Boy-Wonder, Dick Grayson, and placed him in a town-without-pity, Bludhaven. With this volume (the fourth in the Nightwing series by the trio), Nightwing truly steps out of the shadow of his mentor, Batman, and becomes his own man. This is the volume that has everything and more to satisfy even the most demanding comic fan. Examples?

1] A team-up with Superman that shows how deep the bond is that Dick shares with Supes. Remember that Dick was part of the "World's Finest" team in the Silver Age? (People always remember that team as a Batman-Superman team only!) Furthermore, in the Silver Age, Superman takes on the name "Nightwing" sometimes when he visits the Bottled City of Kandor. In this volume (set in post-Crisis continuity), we have Superman telling Nightwing the exploits of a "Kryptonian" hero called "Nightwing"! Also, see Superman take on the "kingpin" of Bludhaven, the Blockbuster.

2] Nightwing in the No Man's Land! See how Dick fights to bring order to Blackgate Prison. There's more action here than in all five "Batman: No Man's Land" tradepaperbacks combined! See how Chuck Dixon silence all the cynics and critics calling this book "Batman Jr." or "Batman Lite" once and for all with this pulse-pounding tale. Dick Grayson is indeed his own man now, no less than his mentor.

3] The kiss that seals a great love. In the Silver Age stories, we see Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) flirting many times with Robin, without it coming to any finality. Then by the 1970s-90s, Nightwing was primarily featured only in Marv Wolfman's "New Teen Titans" books (there, he was paired with the alien Starfire). In this volume, Chuck Dixon revives the Barbara-Dick romance with them finally expressing their love for each other. All in the midst of a life-and-death team-up against the mad, fanatical ex-GCPD cops.

4] This volume also sets up the brilliant storyline that is further expanded upon in future volumes - Dick Grayson as a police officer!

Lastly, I'd like to say that Scott McDaniel used to be my most hated artist at one time. Now, I can't get enough of the crazy perspectives and unbelievably "messy" details in his art. If you want comic-artwork that screams "action" and drives your adrenaline level all the way up, there's nothing comparable to the McDaniel-Story team.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing to please.......2001-03-02

For some reason, my last review didn't show up, so apologies for the shorter on.

Definitely a must-read for any Nightwing fans.

Nightwing continues to come into his own as a hero, even as he's pulled by his ties to Batman. The strongest segment of this compilation is definitely the retaking of Blackgate, which includes the seemingly obligatory "Dick Grayson, this is your life" flashback series (this one, however, is thankfully light on the self-doubt that plagues our hero). Seeing Oracle in acition is worth the price of admission all on its own. The only caveat I'd add is that if you're not familiar with the events in Gotham (the quake, No Man's Land) and the players involved, it might get a bit confusing.

Less strong are the Double Dare and police academy storylines. DOuble Dare, while interesting enough, seemed a bit too cotton-candy in the midst of the other storylines, and while the idea of Dick going to the academy is interesting, it doesn't get nearly enough page time to be more than almost an afterthought.

The continuing intrigue of of the Bludhaven PD is shaping up nicely, and Blockbuster's new storyline almost makes you feel sorry for the big guy.

          Overall, definitely worth acquiring.

4 out of 5 stars Continues to please.......2001-02-28

I'm obsessed with Nightwing. Keep that in mind as you read this.

The adventures of the man who was Robin and is now Nightwing continue to provide solid entertainment. The ongoing storyline of Blockbuster takes an interesting turn here, one that almost has you feeling sorry for the man (well, maybe for his mother). Dick's decision to join the police force gets it's follow through, although not a lot of page time as of yet. The usual players their appearances: Babs (interesting stuff there), Huntress(ditto), Clancy, Tad (who seems to have learned little in the way of caution from his shooting), and, of course, the Bat.

Batman's appearance leads to what is certainly the best storyline in the compilattion: the retaking of Blackgate. It includes the seemingly required trip down memory lane, although this time with thankfully little of the self-doubt that plagues earlier storylines.

Meanwhile, in Bludhaven, things are brewing nicely towards some larger plot.

If anything cost this issue a star, it was the Double Dare segment. Don't get me wrong: I liked the ladies just fine. But sandwiched between a visit from Superman and the retaking of Blackgate, their hijinks seemed a little fluffy to me.

Definitely a must-own for Nightwing fans!

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat Interesting... But Still Too Vague.......2002-10-21

I bought this boook because I had purchased The Quiet Mind, also by White Eagle, and thought it was probably the single greatest book I had ever read. Unfortunately, Spiritual Unfoldment 1, is far from that.

The book starts with a chapter called "A Simple Approach", which discusses the need for correct health, breathing and posture for
spiritual attainment. I found this chapter to be fairly good and instructional. The second chapter discusses the aura and the third discuses communication between the two worlds. It was after these last two chapters that I realized I had a book very different from "The Quiet Mind". Although I have read alot about spirit communication and auras, I have not yet found a book that I feel adequately explains the phenomenon and this one is no exception.

The book continues with very short, single chapters on still more spiritual concepts... your spiritual guide, clairvoyance, divine love, reincarnation, karma and spiritual healing. Although each of these chapters were interesting, they were not discussed in-depth enough for the reader to walk away with a good understanding or belief in the subjects.

My idea of a great book is one that leaves you thirsty to learn more, that makes you think deeply, that makes that "light" go on in your head with a knowing... YES! This book did not do any of those things for me... so I would not recommend it.

Although there were a few interesting passages, I recommend you spend your time reading and re-reading "The Quiet Mind", also by White Eagle instead. It's content is far more valuable!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Unfoldment #1 How to discover Invisible Worlds.......2002-06-03

What is the purpose of life? White Eagle's opening line in Spiritual Unfoldment #1 answers this philosophical question raised over the centuries: "The fundamental purpose of your life is that you may find truth." Religious battles have been waged over truth, and debates have raged around truth. Is truth universal or is it relative to time, place and culture? It is the question Pilate asks Jesus: What is truth?

How significant that White Eagle, who advises us to avoid extremes and find harmonious balance, should tell us that truth is both universal and relative. "Truth always has more than one aspect and many paths lead to God." Elsewhere he has likened truth to a diamond. On one path we see one facet, on another path a different facet, but they are all part of the same diamond. Whichever path we choose it will lead to an aspect of truth.

How do we find the path that is true for us? Not by debate or argument or by looking to outside authority. White Eagle tells us that "truth lies buried deep within your own inner self." In order to contact this source of truth within, we must first learn to release ourselves from the physical limitations of the material body and gently unfold that spiritual eternal life.

Spiritual Unfoldment #1 is White Eagle's basic guide book to realizing the God within. It is the first in a series of four books. Its title so aptly describes the gentle process of awakening that occurs within, like the opening of a rosebud or the natural unfurling of butterfly wings. In the nine chapters he assures us that "a glorious future awaits each soul, but it entails hard work."

An important way to unfold spiritually is through meditation. Meditation is a discipline that keeps the mind focused, yet prevents it from becoming too narrow or constricted. It brings together all wisdom stored in the soul, making us aware of God within and helping that inner light grow. After a period of meditation "your innermost voice will speak to you, saying:"this is my path." But to hear that voice, we must first learn to become discerning and distinguish between the "real higher God-mind" and the "unreal, worldly mind."

Meditation is not the only way to spiritual unfoldment. Anything which cultivates awareness of the beauty of God should be pursued, whether through literature, gardening, cooking or artistry. "All beauty, every emotion of joy and happiness is an expression of God." White Eagle suggests we become more in tune with nature and appreciate grey skies and rain as much as sunshine and blossoms, that we hear the voice of God, the sacred OM in a gale as clearly as in a gentle breeze. "Awakening the inner senses of life brings greater health to your physical body and an expansion of mentality, and an expansion of consciousness and spiritual realization."

White Eagle's advice can help us at all levels. He assures us each one has come back into incarnation to develop a particular quality which will be built into our higher body. "If things are not exactly as you wish them to be in your life, be patient and learn the lesson which your circumstances have brought to teach you."

Spiritual Unfoldment #1 abounds in gems of wisdom. Inspiring words enable us to better understand life and the role we can play to make life happier for ourselves and everyone else. "Be kind--you will be amazed at the peace you will find;" "When the strength of the spirit shows is when you can smile when things appear to be all against you."
Spiritual Unfoldment #1 is highly relevant in today's world.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Unfoldment 2: The Ministry of Angels & Nature.......2002-06-03

Based on talks given by White Eagle and re-published with minor language revisions in 2001, Spiritual Unfoldment #2 is an important book for this age of Aquarius, for it offers a broader perspective on the meaning of brotherhood. Angels and humans are brothers and sisters, White Eagle tells us, "through their kinship of spirit."
In eight chapters covering one hundred pages, Spiritual Unfoldment #2 gives us a panoramic view of the interconnectedness of the universe, beginning with the vibration of the Word which caused the Light, which in turn divided into seven rays of life, each guided by one of the Great Masters of Wisdom. "From each ray comes seven, so that behind and within the veil of physical life are countless hosts of beings, both of the human line of evolution and of the natural and angelic. The life within every growing thing is brought into manifestation, sustained and fed by these countless hosts."
In recent years, humanity has grown to understand its causal impact on the environment and is realizing it does not live in total isolation from other species sharing our planet. White Eagle takes us a step further by disclosing that behind physical life there exists a spiritual counterpart with which we must live in harmony. "Don't be greedy, my dears," he gently chides, "why should humans be the only spiritual manifestations on the earth plane, and all other forms but empty shells?"
Opening our imaginations to the colourful creations that inhabit the finer ether interpenetrating the elements of earth, air, fire and water, White Eagle introduces us to life-forms busy at work in nature, creating jewels and minerals within the earth, colouring flowers, inspiring our creativity. Their work complete, many of these life-forms eventually merge into the angelic kingdom, for all these nature spirits are commanded by angels influenced by one of the three major Rays from which all life comes: Wisdom, Love and Power.
For some, Spiritual Unfoldment#2 may read like science fiction of fantasy, but White Eagle is aware of this scepticism. "Keep an open mind," he advises, "there is so much in heaven and earth which is undreamt of in earthly philosophy." Fairy tales, he says, contain gems of spiritual truth and devotes a chapter to the spiritual interpretation of familiar folklore.
Angels have received wide popular acceptance over the past decade, yet much of the information has been misguided. White Eagle tells us angelic beings come from a different line of evolution than humans. Dispassionate beings, angels often have difficulty coming close to humans who have not learned to control their emotions. Although angels work closely with humans, essentially both belong to different lines and have distinctive roles. The prime concern of angelic hierarchies is with the evolution and the building of form, whereas the human concern is with the growth of spiritual consciousness within that form. Each line relies on the cooperation of the other. "The angels have to work through human channels in order to build heavenly powers into human consciousness."
A guardian angel, "custodian of the karmic law which rules all life," is appointed to each human, guiding it along its chosen path from birth to death. "Every time you respond to a good spiritual impulse, you are helped by your guardian angel," says White Eagle. Attending human birth is also an angel of Birth; likewise at death, an angel of Death with "a face of ineffable mercy, pity and love." Other angels are concerned with soul attributes, such as Love, Mercy, Truth, and even Music, for music influences the soul. Angels of Ceremonial and Ritual assist in the gathering and distribution of power at great ceremonies, while angels of Healing, working under the Master Jesus, carry and distribute healing power.
For those who accept the existence of myriad forms of invisible life, gaining knowledge and understanding of our own relationship with these various life-forms becomes essential to our progress along the spiritual path. "If the soul desires to reach the Divine it must itself help the hosts of angels in their work...it must serve the cause of brotherhood, of evolution." So what is it that humans need to do to contribute to this harmonious brotherhood of life?
White Eagle suggests that by becoming aware of these other forms of life, we are making the first step on the spiritual path, "identify with the tiniest insect, with flowers, sunlight and gentle rains." He also reminds us that one of the biggest contributions humans can make is through the power of thought. "Thoughts are drawn by magnetic attraction towards other thought-streams, either positive or negative." Angels take and mould throught to create form. Human thought, "the healing substance which you give forth from your heart and mind" can be maipulated and used by the angels for positive good, as in healing services, "all uplifting thoughts contribute to that great stream of Divine light." Yet negative thoughts of fear, violent emotions, alcoholic deliriums create elementals from the lower ethers, who cling to the one who creates them. "When people begin to understand what they are creating by their thoughts and their actions and their emotions, they will perhaps understand the great need for discipline in their life."
White Eagle's detailed descriptions of the fascinating work of nature spirits who beautify our world, the glorious connection between angels and humans, and the use of simple language to depict the profundity of creation, contribute to this book's strong appeal. Spiritual Unfoldment #2 is an ideal book to read and re-read now over the Summer when nature is in full bloom and there is time to listen to "the harmonies of the spheres of light sounding from the beauty of a little flower."

5 out of 5 stars A superb presentation and compilation.......2001-09-26

Indian food typically is peasant's food, and is simple to make (if you know what you are doing) and inexpensive. I thus consider new fangled ideas of Indian-like cooking (read Americanisation of Indian cooking) a method to increase prices. How can peasant's food be expensive?? I have also been offended that most people who think they try Indian food, dont really get an idea of the authentic cuisines of India.

I am not against improvisation or innovation when it comes to
cooking, but I think you should know the original first before you learn about the improvised/ innovated versions to get a true sense -- like loving a classic car before someone made a Hot Rod (YUCK!) out of it...

But this book, opened my eye to innovation in cooking -- in taking something good and making it better by being open to new ideas. It is well presented with beautiful photographs and well written, and the choice of recipes is exemplary too..

I love this book, and it may well convert me into a avid cook!

          I recommend it...

All the books I've seen from this series are handsome and this one is no exception. The photographs are very nice and the recipes are unique and diverse. This book gives you a tast of different aspects of Indian cusine.

One thing I really like about this book is the seasonal menu suggestions at the back. There's one for summer, winter, fall, spring. In addition to that though the recipes are great - some really good bean dishes and some new approaches to some old dishes - like the brown basmati moussaka. Lots of fun twists but nothing that woulkd make you question whether the dish will taste good once it's done or not.

5 out of 5 stars Great tasting, healthy vegetarian receipes........1998-10-18

A very good book, especially for making quick, healthy and great tasting vegetarian food. Recipes in her other book, 'Lord Krishna's Cuisine' I thought was not as healthy, they called for too much of ghee (fat).

Now in its eighteenth year, this unique showcase remains the most authoritative guide to contemporary domestic design.

Covering the best and most innovative furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles, and products created over the past eighteen months by both well-known designers and new names from around the world, this year's striking selections have been made by the acclaimed New York-based furniture and product designer Karim Rashid.

In a departure from the Yearbook's traditional format, objects are grouped thematically according to current global design trends: Futuretro, Nukitsch, Phenomena, Organic, Embellishment, Multiplicity, Minimum, and Techno. The book is richly illustrated in color throughout, and many images are accompanied by extended captions explaining their form, function, and innovations. Full technical data is given for each object, and a comprehensive reference section is included with designers' biographies and a list of suppliers' contact details. An introduction by Jennifer Hudson provides an insight into Karim Rashid's background, working practices, and design vision, while Rashid's own introduction explains the reasoning behind his selections as well as his transformation of the Yearbook's presentation to reflect the multiple directions of international design today.

                      5 out of 5 stars TUPAC.......2007-05-14

THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD BOOK. YOU REALLY GET TO GET INTO TUPAC HEAD AND SEE WHAT HE SAW AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BIT MORE OF WHO AND WHAT HE WAS ABOUT

1 out of 5 stars Thru My Eyes:Thoughts on Tupac Shakur in Pictues and Words.......2006-01-07

I bought this book just to see what this book was about. This book should never been printed! Who puts out of focus photos in a book, has his lawyer put a review on this website raving about it and then sells it?! It's a disgrace to photography of any sort. This guy is just making money off 2Pac fans and laughing his way to the bank. You can download better stuff on the web. His storytelling is not fluid or sincere. Anyone can add made up stories to pictures. It's a joke!!!

                      5 out of 5 stars Intimate.......2005-12-02

I bought a copy and finished it by the end of the day; I didn't want to stop reading and
discovering more. I had no idea Gobi shared such an intimate
relationship with the fallen prince. I have the cds and Resurrection
and other documentaries, but, honestly, this book was the first work
that actually humanized 'Pac for me and painted him as a person. I
think it was the first person perspective of a close colleague of his
that made the piece very effective. I got choked up when Gobi
described visiting him in the hospital. Congratulations. Very nice
                      work.

4 out of 5 stars insightful and engaging.......2005-11-02

I was given this book as a gift by a Tupac fan (I'm not a huge fan myself). However, as a music fan and someone who is interested in pop culture, I found the book to be engaging because of the descriptions that come with the photos. Gobi traveled with Tupac for a few years up to his death, and has great insight about this man who is deified by his fans. . . this book (Gobi is a huge fan himself) gives you some "under the surface" perspective about why people think so highly of Tupac. This book is as good as the Kurt Cobain "Letters" book. I would highly recommend to any music fan.
