Product Description
These moving yet unsentimental stories recount scenes in the coming of age of Petey Bellapani, from age eight to adolescence, growing up in the Italian Catholic ethnic neighborhood of Bridgeport in Chicago. The scenes form powerful images of urban youth: A fire burns Peteys home above a bakery. A neighborhood softball game takes an unexpected turn. And first love blooms next door and at the laundromat. The Logic of a Rose won the G.S. Sharat Chandra Prize for Short Fiction, selected by Gladys Swan.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful collection of short stories.......2006-01-03
The Logic of a Rose is a wonderful read. Lombardo weaves together stories that are not only entertaining but also beautifully written. He describes his characters and environment so simply yet manages to capture every moment with such detail that the reader feels that he is a part of the story, standing right next to Petey in the Wallace Playlot or watching Petey's father load the bakery's delivery truck. Lombardo is a gifted writer, and the only way to better experience his narrative is to hear him read his marvelous work aloud.
A moving study of both place and character.......2005-11-23
This is a great book of stories. Lombardo lavishes loving attention on the details of Bridgeport, and this attention will be a joy to readers who know the area and those who don't. Like the author Stuart Dybek, Lombardo finds beauty where others are too jaded to see it. This compassion and heart is also with him as he explores his characters, and Petey Bellapani above all. Whether the characters are living up to their ideals or whether they're muddling their way through, they are touching, understandable, perfectly real. This collection really stays with a reader, like the most important memories of childhood.
A Brilliant Debut.......2005-09-04
There are many passages of beauty in this brilliant first book. A "Winesburg Ohio" of the Italian working class enclave of Bridgeport on the south side of Chicago, Lombardo's book is written with tenderness, humor, and deep affection for people he knows well and a city he loves. Lombardo recalls the work of Stuart Dybek, but he is not as relentless, objective and hard-edged. This is gentler fiction, but it is very fine on its own terms. Funny and touching passages about his moralistic and loving father (not unlike the bus driver father in "A Bronx Tale") ,about his father's emotional reaction to a Tony Bennett recording, about Italian working people, and about a chance meeting with a first love in a laundromat are haunting. There is a sense of wonder to these terrific stories.--David Evanier is the author of "Roman Candle: The Life of Bobby Darin," "The One-Star Jew," winner of the Aga Khan Fiction Prize, and a former senior editor of The Paris Review.
A Deft and Refreshing Characterization of a Boy's Life.......2005-08-30
This collection of short stories balances perfectly between the perspective of its child protagonist, Petey Bellapani, and the wisdom and understanding that comes of age. Lombardo portrays Petey with tenderness and understanding without ever sentimentalizing or idealizing him. In other hands, Petey's evolution might have led to disillusionment, but Lombardo brilliantly captures Petey's internal voice, a voice that never loses its wonder even as he learns the codes of Bridgeport, his tough neighborhood. Lombardo's collection defies the flat characterization of masculinity too common in contemporary popular culture. Petey, his father, and even the punks of Bridgeport are three dimensional, outwardly posturing but inwardly real, devoted to the toughness expected of them while holding within extraordinary loyalty, affection, courage, and their own brand of honor.

Book Description
Over 24 of the best "furry" fiction stories of the past 15 years. Winner of Furry Fandoms' Ursus Award. Furry fiction revolves around sentient animals or characters who have animal aspects, ranging from genetically engineered creatures to aliens to werewolves. Although related to science fiction, fantasy, and horror, this branch of speculative fiction has a style all its own. This volume, in addition to the wide-variety of entertaining stories, contains non-fiction material explaining the origin and development of furry fiction. Usually taking the form of human characteristics given to animals, anthropomorphics have been with humanity from the earliest cave painting to our modern marketing icons and sports mascots. In the last several decades, the study of and fandom for anthropomorphics (commonly called the "furry" fandom) had been recognized as unique, and deserving of attentions. From Watership Down to Redwall, fantasy fans have flocked to heroic tales of furry heroes. In Furry!, "furry fiction expert" and editor Fred Patten takes readers through some of the best-loved and most memorable furry stories ever written. This anthology of furry fiction features twenty-six of the best stories from long-running literary magazines such as Anthrolations, PawPrints Fanzine, The Ever-Changing Palace, Tales of the Tai-Pan Universe, and Yarf! Included are stories by Lawrence Watt-Evans, Watts Martin, Michael H. Payne, Gene Breshears, Brock Hoagland, Mel. White, Phil Geusz, and many others. The collection also features informative introductions and bibliographies detailing the origins and history of the sub-genre. Editor Fred Patten has a long and illustrious career in fandom, being on of the founders of the first American fan club for Japanese animation, and well asbeing active in science fiction and comic book conventions since the 1960s. He writes "Theriopangrams" for the Furrlough comics series. Patten is a founding member of Furry/Anthropormorphics fandom. He resides in California. "The stories...will make you laugh, the will make you cry...they will make you think. At least some of them will probably make you uncomfortable. Ask yourself what you'd do in one of these situations. Be honest. Share the ideas with you friends if you're bold enough. These are stories you can talk about for hours and not get tired. Most highly recommended." -Elizabeth Barrette, Infinite.com
Customer Reviews:
Freakish sexual deviation.......2007-04-19
This book is the literary manifestation of sexual repression and malformation. Coherent stories, decent prose, actual plot and character development, but all in support of repressed bestiality. Though non-furries will find it readable and perhaps even enjoyable as fiction, the true reason behind each and every one of these stories is furthering the spread of the mental abhoration that is furrydom.
Do not support this book or any of its benefactors.
Fantastic Book.......2007-03-17
This book is the best bargain I have ever gotten. It is a must read for Furries. And Non-Furries will enjoy it just as much. The stories are well written and well catigorised . I will read them again and again.
AKA, Best In Show.......2006-06-04
FYI, This book is/was also published as "Best In Show" by Sofawolf Press.
This anthology is very good and I heartily recommend it. It contains stories from authors on my "buy-on-sight" list and I had nearly laid out the cash for it before I started reading the descriptions and realized it sounded awfully familiar. It's darn good, but I don't really need two copies. :)
I think the biggest strength of this anthology is its variety. With twenty six different authors, you are almost guaranteed to find something new. I already knew Brian Antoine and Phil Geusz were excellent furry authors. In this anthology, I discovered "The Color Of Rain" by Gene Breshears, "Crucible" by Kim Liu, "Messenger" by Mel White, and more. If you like anthropomorhic short stories, this is for you.
P.S. The Sofawolf version has cover art by Ursula Vernon, which you might prefer. :)
Something different.......2006-05-19
If you're like me, you're tired of sword-and-magic fantasy, weary of Lord of the Rings clones and you couldn't care any less about Harry what's-his-name. You do not understand what is so fantastic about the medieval period. You are tired of humans getting all the attention. You wish Jurassic Park had been told from the dinosaur's point of view without all those humans getting in the way (and you were rooting for the raptors). We want something different.
This collection of furry stories breaks out of what is considered normal fantasy by making animals the center of attention, and it's a refreshing break!
Fully realized worlds with intelligent, humanized animals. Some by genetic manipulation, some by transformation, and many where there is no explanation. If you're willing to buy into this and get a dose of a different kind of fantasy, this is a great find! These are writers who have broken from the norm and explored the less-traveled road of animal stories for adults. Humanized animals have a nasty reputation as being cartoons exclusively for kids, but these authors write them for adults who are open-minded enough to take them seriously. There's nothing childish about them; they explore themes meant for adult minds and I'm not talking about sex. Yes, there is some (and it's all tasteful), but a lot of these stories will make you think about far-reaching subjects. Some will touch you emotionally, like good literature should.
As with all collections of short stories, the quality varies from story to story, but there are some real gems in here.
Foxy Lady--a very touching love story. It tickles the hormones without ever breaching good taste. Wish it was longer!
Canis Major--great action with a cute ending.
Wings--this one alone is worth the retail price of the book. Emotionally, it is the deepest story of them all. It gets you in the heart.
Secret Weapon--you just don't see dragons portrayed like this! The funniest in the collection.
Mercy to the Cubs--I thought the ending needed to be poignant instead of happy, but it's still a suspenseful read.
Messenger--the Eater is a unique idea.
Find the Beauty--I like foxes, so I have to like this one. An unexpected twist in a transformation story.
Little Monster--the most original take on a werewolf story I've ever read! Real fun!
The rest range from barely passable (only 2 or 3) to very good. I'm glad to find fantasy that does not copy TLOTR and rehash the tired old dethroned-king-peasant-becomes-unlikely-warrior-medieval-politics-group-of-friends-on-epic-journey plots that dominate much of fantasy. We've been there and done all that for over 50 years. It was fresh and original when Tolkin did it, but it's time for something different. Time to view talking animals as something other than childish cartoons. I'm glad I read this.
Great stories spanning 15 years..........2006-03-02
... of course, I helped select the stories and wrote one, so I'm rather biased. Nevertheless, we sorted through a pile of over 100 stories that itself was winnowed down from fifteen years of fanzines devoted to anthropomorphic animal fiction, so a lot of work and care went into the selection. The stories range from contemporary fiction with nothing more odd than a werewolf to completely realized fantasy worlds populated entirely with anthropomorphic animal characters. If you liked "Watership Down." C.J. Cherryh's Chanur series, or even just werewolf stories, give it a shot--there's probably something here you'll be glad you found.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Red is the story of a retired spy, and more particularly a very talented wetwork sort of guy, who had a deal to retire quietly, keep to himself, and he would be left alone. Management changes at the CIA, and they decide to get rid of him. Big mistake for those involved with this decision.
Tokyo Storm Warning is a crazy Japanese style giant robot slugfest, where one poor little human woman has to try and avoid getting stomped on. Ok, she is a pilot type, so she isn't your average female.
Flimsy, Silly, Gorgeous, Stupid.......2006-05-15
The first thing to note about this book is that it contains two very different stories with two very different artistic portrayals, sharing Warren Ellis as the author. Thus you have to evaluate the two stories on their own merits, which is sort of hard to do in a combined review.
Fortunately for the review (and unfortunately for my brain), Wildstorm decided to make that easier by packing two of the worst things Ellis has ever written into one slim volume.
First, the story that prompted me to seek out this book, we have Tokyo Storm Warning. I cannot advise people enough: do not read this piece of execrable trash. DO NOT READ IT. The so-called narrative in Tokyo Storm Warning is bad enough that I suspect it could lead to lesions on the brain, and with repeat absorption, liquefy your frontal lobes entirely. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
The art, on the other hand, is superb, if a bit busy. Giant robot action is very well handled by James Raiz and Andrew Currie, and the coloring work is also quite nice.
Tokyo Storm Warning reminds me of the early days of pornography in the United States; after the Supreme Court declared that something couldn't be considered entirely obscene, on a federal level, if it had 'literary' value, you saw magazines like Playboy spring ex nihilo onto the national landscape, with the requisite amount of fiction, interview, commentary, jokes, etc, by as many known authors as they could get their hands on. It was a flimsy legal excuse to peddle nude pictures, but it worked. Tokyo Storm Warning feels like it went through a similar creative process, whereby Wildstorm found itself in possession of some artists who could do giant robot/mechanical art very well, and needed a story, however tissue paper thin, from a known author, in order to peddle the art. Thus Warren Ellis, presumably in withdrawal from nicotine or some such, scribbled out, in crayon or bodily fluid, what almost has to be the single worst thing he's ever written (short of perhaps grade school "What I Did This Summer" essays), it was put to glossy paper, and sold to unsuspecting victims around the world. Blech.
If you can just look at the pretty pictures, or don't read English, it would come across a *lot* better.
Red is the second story, which while being better in the same way that a quick death is better than being eaten by pit bulls, still taxes reason in a way dangerous to the moral fiber of a nation. A mish-mash of every posturing, man's-man action movie trope you can imagine, it could pass for a very bad screenplay from an early Arnold Schwarzenegger movie if you squint at it sideways. It's basically the story of a super-killer CIA agent who comes out of retirement to seek revenge on a namby-pampy, liberal cypher appointed CIA Director who, upon seeing all the horrible things he did in the Service of His Nation, orders him killed. Blah. Campaign of violence. Blah, Blah. Elaborate revenge plot. Blah, Blah, Blah. Speech about being a 'real man'. Etc. It's the fictional equivalent of steroid abuse, i.e., too much mental testosterone.
The art in Red complements the marginally better story by being bland, unappealing and dull. Thus it *almost* manages to tie with Tokyo Storm Warning as a sequential-art abortion. But not quite, because TSW serves as the high water mark for what a great artist/writer team can do when they're completely phoning it in. In some future textbook it will serve as a cautionary tale about relying too much on raw, unmotivated skill.
In short: avoid this book at all costs, except for the pretty giant robot pictures.
Good and bad.......2004-06-28
Red is the best of Ellis's 3-parter blitz. It promises much early and delivers late. As to why it was paired with TSW, easily the worst of the 3-parters, i can only assume there's a surfeit of whisky going around at Wildstorm HQ. TSW's plot key is a clever idea, but it's just not enough to hold up the messy story, and the art is muddled and just too busy. A rare Ellis misstep.
Red is the story of a retired CIA assassin brought back into activity by a misguided bureaucrat. Tokyo Storm Warning is Battling Seizure Robots with a twist.

You might want to digest this book slowly, a few pages at a time. Although Zen teacher Steve Hagen has a knack for putting the philosophy of Buddhism in a "plain and simple" package, it may take a while to sink in. There is so much there. Seeing reality, realizing the wisdom of the self, breaking free of dualistic thinking--this is pretty heady stuff. Thankfully, Hagen passes it along in the form of examples from life, psychological tidbits, and stories from Buddhist teachers past and present. And when it clicks in, it can be life-transforming. Hagen explains this shift in outlook and how the fundamental way we look at the world affects everything we do. As an outline, Hagen follows the basic teachings of the Buddha, and we see that, rather than dogmatic truths, they are reminders for us as we reconsider the life we have taken for granted for so long. As it turns out, Buddhism is life, plain and simple. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
“A beacon light of clarity and wisdom, a sobering teacher for us all. Simple and outstanding. Highly recommended.” - Charlotte Joko Beck, author of Everyday Zen
“This is. . . . about awareness. Not awareness of something in particular, but awareness itself'being awake, alert, in touch with what is actually happening. It's about examining and exploring the most basic questions of life. It's about relying on the immediate experience of this present moment. It's about freedom of mind.” - Steve Hagen
The observations and insights of the Buddha are practical and eminently down-to-earth, dealing exclusively with awareness in the here and now. Buddhism Plain and Simple offers listeners these fundamental teachings, stripped of the cultural trappings that have accumulated around Buddhism over the past twenty-five centuries. The newcomer will be inspired by the clear, simple principles found in Buddhism Plain and Simple, and those familiar with Buddhism will welcome this long-needed overview.
“Buddhism Plain and Simple is a delightfully direct pathway toward our true heart.” - Steven Levine, author of Who Dies?

Plain and Simple.......2007-10-05
The title tells it all! I had always wanted to know just what Buddhism was all about. After attempting to read other articles and books on the subject, I had just abut given it up until I ran across this one. Naturally the title intrigued me, I purchased it I am pleased to say it is "excellent". Thank you, Steve Hagen!
great intro to the world of buddhism.......2007-09-05
easy to read, easy to follow and great, easy points to keep in mind after reading the book.
this was a perfect book to read to get the feel for buddhism and to feel confident to read something more advanced.
Easy Peasy!! Get this one FIRST........2007-07-22
This HAS to be one of the BEST {["Introductions"]} to Buddhism I've ever come across. Plain (yes it is!!) simple - yes, & easy to understand & digest. Short, concise & to the point. In fact it's ALL of the positive comments made here above already. Refreshing & intelligently written. More importantly it's very "enlightening" (pun intended).
A perfect starter book if you want to get an inkling for what "all the rage" is about, especially if you're a student of any kind and short on study time.
Even if you're not a Buddhist, or not even thinking about becoming one, it's good to have some understanding of this "up and coming" religion so that you may have a better and more informed understanding of the people from the lands that practice it and where you may go one day on holiday too!
Simplicity opens the door........2007-07-20
As a newcomer to Buddhism, I've encountered alot of mysticism and abstract philosophy in many of the books I've read so far. Buddhism Plain & Simple removes most of the complexity I've encountered in understanding awareness.
Without sounding pretentious or self-righteous, Hagen introduces Buddhism in a plain, straight-talking midwestern style which made it palatable, acceptable, and desirable to my ears. I intend to absorb all of his books.
Simply vapid.......2007-07-13
The author writes as though information about things that are easy to conceptualize but hard to do, like paying continuous and close attention to the present moment as it happens, is best conveyed as though writing for simpletons. The result is a prose style so cloying and insipid as to verge on the unreadable. If you want to find out about Buddhism or meditation (which are really interesting; more so than you might think) try Mindfulness in Plain English.

Book Description
First published by Tuttle in 1989 as An Invitation to Practice Zen, it has gone on to sell nearly 20,000 copies. Now, with a new preface and updated instructional photographs, it's perfect to help a new generation of readers looking to learn the basics of zazen, zen meditation. With a concise overview of the basics and clear photographs illustrating the proper positions and postures, this comprehensive guidebook demystifies the age-old practice of zazen and brings its numerous benefits into the daily lives of today's Westerners.
Customer Reviews:
Nice little primer.......2001-04-22
Zen Meditation: Plain and Simple is an excellent little primer on how to sit in zazen. Also covered are the basics of Buddhism and Zen. The instructions are easy to understand, and the explanations are concise if slighly dry.
The only drawback is that the pictures showing the positions are in black and white, and the model is wearing dark clothing and socks. This makes it very difficult to tell the difference between the Lotus and Half Lotus positions if you don't already know.
The book stresses persistance, and that "anything brought up by zazen can be solved in zazen". It is a simple, fairly undogmatic approach to the practice of meditation.

A good cookie cookbook, especially for "Moms".......2004-12-18
When I was a teen, one of my mother's friends lent us a Betty Crocker cookie cookbook. Once I saw the recipes inside, I just had to copy some of them down. They sounded absolutely delightful.
I am very happy that, years later, I found this cookbook which contains many of the same recipes. I excitedly bought it and couldn't wait to get it home to make some terrific cookies from it. Since then, I've made several recipes from this book. The lemon-lime cookies have a delicious icing and my husband loves them. I've also made the chocolate-cherry stripe cookies and they came out very cute. The orange madeleine recipe makes a very delicate, simple, almost cake-like cookie. I've had requests for that recipe from those who tasted it. This cookbook also has a number of charming recipes to make "cute" cookies for kids.
I would recommend this cookbook to most cooks. I think it makes a great "mom" cookbook because the recipes aren't too difficult and many of the cookies would appeal to kids. If you are looking for a sophisticated cookie cookbook, you would probably find one of Maida Heatter's cookbooks more to your liking. This cookbook is fun, though, and has some very tasty recipes!
Ultimately Scrumptious!.......2000-11-26
My husband got this for me after I bungled about four batches of cookies in a row. I haven't bungled one since. The recipes range from the simple and traditional: the ultimate chocolate chip, the ultimate oatmeal, and the ultimate sugar cookies, to brownies and bars (the lemon bars are PERFECT), to more unusual: specialty and holiday/party cookies. If ever I need a recipe for krumkake or orange madeleines, pizzelles or springerle, I know where I'll go.
The recipes are well organized and easy to execute. The pictures are in mouth-watering color and plentiful. My little boy loves to page through it to look at all the yummy varieties. If I had one criticism, it would be that this book should really be spiral bound, for those of us who really USE our cookbooks in the kitchen!

Book Description
The gradual disappearance of the dining room as the center of family reunion, coupled with the growing concern for comfort and technological advance, have converted the kitchen into the most important room in the house--the place where meals are prepared and the family gathers to be together. As the room where guests are received, today?s kitchen fulfills the role of living rooms in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As a result, it has become one of the most prominent rooms in the house. More time is invested than before in the selection of kitchen materials and decorations. Today?s kitchens are larger and fitted out with multiple pragmatic solutions which increase capacity and level of organization. The new concept for kitchens envisions particular areas for each activity; in such a way that the kitchen may be utilized comfortably while space is left for the family to come together at mealtime. This book presents a selection of contemporary designs that advocate comfortable, luminous spaces in which preparation of meals and sitting at table become genuine pleasures.
Classical kitchens, Rustic kitchens, Modern and avant-garde kitchens, Minimalistic kitchens, Small kitchens, Industrial kitchens, Aplliances and accessories
Plans and details for each project and well as full color images and design information.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Factual Book.......2006-08-14
This outstanding book focuses on the discovery and identification of the Romanov bones and the subsequent DNA testing. The book's strength lies in describing how the bones were found and not in the subjective non-scientific arguments as to whether Anna Anderson was Anastasia or Franziska Schanzkowska. This book is not clouded by the personal opinions of the authors. You won't find any self-serving statements or arguments in this book.
A boring rehashed version of Massie.......2006-01-06
The title says it all. I'm sorry Mr. Klier, but this book is EXACTLY like "The Romanovs: The Final Chapter" by Robert K. Massie. It may just be coincidence since they were published in the same year, but honestly, there isn't anything new in this book that cannot be found in Massie's or in Peter Kurth's "Anastasia: The Riddle of Anna Anderson". And now there is a rehashed version of "The Quest For Anastasia" called "A Romanov Fantasy: Life At the Court Of Anna Anderson" by Frances Welch. When does it end? One book copies one, and then another copies that one. Soon our history books will be nothing but rumors!!
Russians continue to lie about disposition of Romanovs.......2005-06-02
This is yet another pathetic book on the "fate" of the Romanovs. The Russians do not divulge anything new, DNA test can be "altered" to reflect what the examiners "wish" to discover. In a word this book is a "fantasy" and only that!
Unless ALL of the documentation collected by Anastasia's uncle, Andrew, uncle Ernst Louis of Hesse, the Russian secret police files, the files of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the files of the German High Command both before and after WWII are opened and made public (which will most likely NOT occur), then the ghouls will continue to make scads of money with these shoddy books.
There is not a scrap of actual "truth" in this ridiculous book. The British royal family, the Bank of England, and Baring Brothers' banking firm ALL benefited greatly being able to "absorb" the millions....in gold...deposited in the Bank of England by the Tsar. All and all, each of the individuals involved in this "book" should be so ashamed as to print such rubbish. RUN, do not WALK to the nearest dumpster with any copy of this absurd facsimile of a book.
But how did she escape the bullets??.......2003-10-30
This book is yet another version of the fascinating story of the last days of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The book is strongest in its presentation of the endless squabbling among those with an interest in what happened to the Romanovs. That Nicholas and his family were taken to a basement room at Ipatiev House in Ekaterinberg, Siberia and shot seems to be well-documented. But exactly who did the shooting and why? The authors give us a cast of characters. The more interesting part -- and what is in dispute -- is this: Did everyone die in that basement? What happened after the shooting, when the soldiers hauled away the bodies? The authors try to retrace the events, but provide no story about any person in the basement group surviving, or how anyone could have survived.
And that brings us to the title of the book. Did Anastasia somehow survive the rain of bullets and thrusts of bayonets in that basement and reappear some years later in a mental hospital in Berlin? Was the woman known as Anna Anderson really Anastasia? As the authors point out -- but only after you've read to the end of the book -- DNA evidence says she was NOT Anastasia. If she was not Anastasia, how did she manage to convince many credible people, including people who knew Anastasia, that she was? The points of similarity were many, both physically and in her knowledge of the Russian court. Many of the people who believed she was the daughter of the tsar have not accepted the DNA evidence. Those who do accept it say she was really a Polish peasant who disappeared at the same time that "Anna" appeared.
Many people had vested interests in the story of Anna. Surviving members of the Romanov extended family supposedly wanted to make sure that Anna did not inherit any of the tsar's reported fortune (although no fortune was ever found), so it was because of their greed that they would not accept Anna as Anastasia. In some cases, investigators got sucked into the story (either looking for fame, fortune or simply charmed by Anna) and spent years of their lives trying to establish Anna's identity.
Those who persist in believing that Anna was Anastasia say a peasant girl could not have had such a "regal bearing" or knew as much about the Romanovs as Anna did. However, I see no reason why a Polish peasant girl who spent years in a hospital with nothing to do but read books and study couldn't have learned about the Russian court and couldn't have practiced acting like a Russian Grand Duchess. From the evidence, it appears that Anna came to believe she WAS the tsar's daughter. But if so, how did she claim to have escaped the bullets? Yes, she could have claimed amnesia about the event, but her identity as Anastasia is not believable without some accounting of her escape and the authors give us none. Perhaps because for them the DNA evidence was conclusive. Anna is NOT Anastasia.
The book is an entertaining read, and I enjoyed it, but it does not live up to its subtitle: "Solving the Mystery of the Lost Romanovs." As long as some people will not let go of their vision of Anastasia, who still believe that Anna was the tsar's daughter, then the story goes on. There are also at least two "pretenders" who have said they are Alexei -- both are dead now, but their families press their claim. Since two bodies were never found -- those of Alexei and of one of the daughters -- it seems likely that this is one story that will never go away, a mystery that can never truly be solved.
Ehhh........2002-07-24
Interesting, but nothing I haven't seen before. People (which I think mostly are ...) who believe in the story of Anna Anderson being the Grand Duchess wouldn't like this book. I'm quite sure about these DNA tests, but then again, one would be better off buying The Final Chapter by Massie which explains everything and I mean everything (except for a few things scientists forgot, like Tatiana being the missing daughter). As for knowing of the visit in 1916? Letters to his wife and from are all about being at the front. Ernst was not in Russia, although it is common knowledge Nicholas wanted to settle the war at the Hague.
