Book Description
Gene Logsdon’s The Man Who Created Paradise is a message of hope at a time when the sustainability of the earth appears to many to be hopeless. The fable, inspired by a true story, tells how young Wally Spero looked at one of the bleakest places in America—the strip-mined spoil banks of southeastern Ohio—and saw in it his escape from the drudgery of his factory job. He bought an old bulldozer and used the machine to carve patiently, acre by acre, a beautiful little farm out of a seemingly worthless wasteland. This charming story is the purest distillation yet of what Gene Logsdon has been writing as a journalist and author through the course of some twenty books of nonfiction and hundreds of magazine articles. Environmental restoration is the task of our time. The work of healing our land begins in our own backyards and farms, in our neighborhoods and our regions. Humans can turn the earth into a veritable paradise—if they really want to. Noted photographer Gregory Spaid retraced the trail that Logsdon traveled when he was inspired to write The Man Who Created Paradise. His photographs evoke the same soulful yearning for wholeness, for ties to land and community, that infuses the fable’s hopeful, poetic prose. Seldom have words and images complemented each other so well.

A jewel.......2004-10-26
This is such a small little book to have inspired me so much.
Logsdon writes even better than is usual for him. You can almost feel his own sickness as he surveys the disemboweled hills and sallow culture of a strip-ming community - smell the richness of earth and pasture as he turns down a gravel drive - and feel hope sprout where death had come.
The photos are perfect. The parable is immensely moving. Is it all true? I don't know, but it ought to be. It moved me to make it true in my little corner of paradise lost
Tasty but tiny!.......2004-01-08
Mr. Logsdon's book is an easy, inspiring read. It left me yearning for a simpler life... and a thicker book! Stocked with full-page photos, the book consumes all of 15 minutes to read its 36 pages of text. I can highly recommend his books, but with this one, I felt it was over too quickly.
One Empire's Spoils Is Another's Paradise of Spirit.......2001-11-11
Gene, I can't wait to meet you. And seriously, I'd better not wait any longer. I've known the country you describe. Comforting.
"Paradise" is no fable of spirit. It is inspirational and healing. No doubt you have met my father or at least aspects of a Walter, born in '26, tied to the farm no matter his circumstances. He farmed with a dozer and rather well at times. I write you here to tell the reclaimation of spirit and family. At 75 now he has built his planting 'rig' and is on top of the world with satisfaction.
We've always got along fantastic, he and I, but apart; deeply apart. I am determined now, to learn that dozer, that crane, that rig, to make a paradise from paradise lost. Hear the walls fall, the walls I put up, the walls I push away with his "Alice".
You and your generation are the "optomists supreme", practical and pragmatic to perfection. Cheeers!

For Better or For Worse.......2006-08-02
Ciara's Song (1998) is the second novel in the Witch World Chronicles series, following Songsmith. Ciara is the daughter of Talyo and Lanlia, both from families with some Old Blood. Her brother Larian brought word of Duke Yvian's thrice horning of the Old Blood. Lanlia envisions the deaths of her two step-sons and takes steps to protect young Ciara.
Talyo, Larian and Lanlia die at the hands of their neighbors at Elmsgarth, but Ciara is not found by the mob. Three days later, Lord Tarnoor arrives with his son Trovagh to look for survivors and to take away all portable items to keep them from the scavengers. They find Ciara and take her back with them to Aiskeep.
In this novel, Ciara is heart-sick with grief and fear; she is having nightmares and unable to keep down her food. One night, Trovagh comes during a nightmare and hears Ciara speak of her loneliness, so he offers his own family to her. He swears to protect her and proposes marriage. When Ciara agrees, they perform as much of the betrothal ceremony as they remember and then return to their beds.
Lord Tarnoor overhears their conversation and ceremony and is well pleased. He asks the Priestess of the Cup and Flame to oversee a formal betrothal ceremony for them and it is done. Now Ciara will be the daughter that he has always wanted.
After that Ciara's health steadily improves, but Trovagh catches a cold that becomes pneumonia. Ciara prepares draughts for him as had her mother, but he becomes feverish and his lungs gurgle. Remembering the pendant given to her by Larian, Ciara sinks her mind into its gray mists and heals his illness. Later she heals a favorite horse who has broken his leg. Both times, the exhaustion and powerloss last for a week; obviously she is not a very strong healer.
Lord Tarnoor, however, knows that she has enough of the Old Blood powers to inflame passions against her. Moreover, the powerful lords would have no qualms about using her for political ends. Something must be done to protect her from these enemies.
One man suspects her powers, however, and intends her death. Seren tries to drown her in Teral Town, but a friendly merchant loudly orders a search for the missing girl and scares away the would-be killer. Seren tries to harm Ciara in other ways, but the betrayer is himself betrayed. Seren is driven out of his own garth and dies in a strange land. However, his son has sworn vengeance against the people of Aiskeep.
This novel covers four generations at Aiskeep, from Lord Tarnoor to his great-granddaughter Aisling. It encompasses the history of Karsten from the thrice horning to the rise of Duke Shandro. During this time, the witches of Estcarp stir their southern mountains, killing the invading army of Duke Pagar of Kars.
This is a time of great danger to anyone with the Old Blood. Indeed, anyone with any magical powers at all, including healing, are viewed with suspicion. Even an accusation of working for the witches of Estcarp is likely to stir up a lynch mob.
To her sorrow, Ciara finds enemies among her own children. Her son Kirin is just weak, welcoming the attentions of Duke Pagar. However, her grandson Kirion is evil, bullying his own brother and trying to kill his sister Aisling for her powers.
Highly recommended for Norton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magic, loyalty and intrigue.

cute, but not even close..........2004-06-08
I loved the book - there were many cute moments. That was until I got to the ending. I felt that a lot was left out of the book. Many things were said or hinted at that should not have been if they weren't going to bring it all together at the end. I've been taught that nothing is EVER mentioned if it doesn't prove useful later because it's a waste of time and space. The book could have been expanded upon with more character and plot development. It felt like half the novel was missing once I'd closed the book. Did they just run out of time and rushed at the end to get something completed? There was no real ending. I know people say that cliffhangers are great for the writing of sequels, but come on! That wasn't a cliffhanger... It was a cliff that fell from under my feet! I was sorely disappointed. If you're looking for a quick, cute read with no meat, this is good. However, if you love sci fi and the witch world and love books that actually satisfy you once you're through, do not read this... it'll just make you wish you didn't.
Wishing for more.......2002-06-02
Oh yes, exactly! I, I suppose in contrast to those prior in reviews, LOVED this book incredibly. While I DO wish that Cee's story was expanded upon (towards the end it seemed a little rushed) I still can't wait for a sequel! I'm now reading the "Chronicles of Witchworld," and wish most desperately I could find a sequel on the story of Ciara's granddaughter.
Extremely Boring.......2002-03-27
The first chapter is fast paced and exciting; probably written by Norton, who left the rest of the book to the junior author. The remainder of the book drags on and on, with no character development, no interesting fantasy evironment, no action, and really nothing to recommend it.
Maybe appropriate for teens.......2001-06-08
I picked this book up because I had enjoyed Norton's writing in the past. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed by the book. The plot was interesting--if unoriginal--and the book had some cute parts to it. However, the writing style was juvenile at best. The book often seemed more like a plot summary than a novel, so that the authors were able to skim through the events of several decades in 244 pages. The book was told from the point of view of several characters over the span of about 40 years, giving the book a disjointed tone. None of the characters was ever really developed, and most of the villains were incredibly shallow. The ending was anticlimactic and inconclusive. The authors often left out even incredibly basic descriptions, so that I often didn't know what characters looked like. All in all, I had the impression that the authors didn't like the book very much and were trying to get through it as quickly as possible. If they had filled it out properly, or made it into two full novels, it might have been worth the paper it was printed on. The book might be appropriate for adolescent readers, but adult readers might want to look for something a little bit better.

A Bad Period for the Legion.......2000-01-09
I thought that this was an average collection, but it is a keeper because it shows the end of the first era of the Legion of Super-Heroes. After the tales in this book, the Legion was stuck with backup stories and reprints for several years. Many of the creators who made the Legion so popular left. Jim Shooter stopped regularly writing and worst of all, Curt Swan stopped. It is an important book, and I suggest you buy it if you have the first 8 volumes.

great book! buy it!! Everything is wakan. find out why!
Primary research materials; an essential history.......2002-05-04
Lakota Belief and Ritual is a book rich in oral history. It was recorded at the a time when there were First Nations members who had the personal experiences of a lifetime and whose tradition was an oral tradition. Dr. Walker (a physician and anthropologist) collected and preserved this oral history in the face of the destruction of most First Nation's cultures through the intervention of the European cultures.
The narratives are all excellent and there are 90 + documents containing those first-person narratives along with several photographs.
The Bison Books edition has an extensive (and very valuable) series of appendices, including an extensive (modern) bibliography.
The original Walker papers (or the majority, at any rate) are now part of the Colorado Historical Society collection.
A first rate piece of work by the editors, DeMallie & Jahner, working from the primary materials created and preserved by Dr. Walker and his family.
An invaluable work. This book -or at least excerpts- should be part of any text on U.S. History. The inclusion of First Nations culture in our textbooks is rare, indeed.
True story of a medical doctor that became a Wicasa Wakan.......2002-01-25
James Walker went to the Pine Ridge reservation in 1896 (as a Christian) to serve the indians as a Medical Doctor.
18 years later when he left the reservation; he had adopted the Sioux form of Spirituality, and had become a wicasa wakan (holy man). He was trained by George Sword, and other medicine and holy people.
Some of this material is very dry, and dificult reading because a large part of the book (expecially the rituals and myths) were translated into English from the Language of the Sioux. But if you have a sincere wish to understand this form of Spirituality; this book is well worth reading.
I do wish to confirm one statement in this book by wicasa wakan (George Sword). "Any pipe can be used in a sacred manner" I could NOT agree more! I have used a meerschaum pipe, a pipestone (catlinite) pipe, and a briar pipe. The condition of the heart and mind is far more important than the kind of pipe one uses.
I encourage questions and comments about my reviews; Two Bears.
Wah doh Ogedoda (We give thanks Great Spirit)
Lakota Belief and Ritual.......2000-12-14
This book is the litmus test for subsequent interpretations of the Lakota religion. Since the true authors felt that their culture was disappearing, they were extremely forthcoming with their information to Dr. Walker. All Lakota expressions of religion that follow this revelation of the Lakota medicine men are in fact derivative of it. Some have questioned the qualifications of the "informants" within Lakota society, but I have seen no contemporary Lakota belief or ritual that deviates from the broad strokes of this book. If you truly want to learn about traditional Lakota religion, start here, and then move on to Raymond J. DeMallie's edited texts under the title The Sixth Grandfather.
I think it is information is right on.......1999-01-05
I think that the author of this book that I have just started to read is very good at give the outlook of the Lakota and the way of live that thye live and i think that if you have the change to buy or cheak it out from the library in your area that you should

One Of The Most Original BBQ Cookbooks On The Market.......2004-10-11
I saw Ms. Boxcar at the Melbourne Writer's Festival in Australia, and she's bloody marvelous. Once you stop laughing, you will find that this collection of recipes is wonderfully tasty. The sauces alone breathe life into the old barbie regulars. What she does to beef is sinful! So if you are looking for a great food and great fun, this is the one.
Your tastebuds will THANK YOU........2003-12-14
This BBQ cookbook is filled with creative BBQ recipes and spectacular sauces that make you want to run to the kitchen and start cooking once you stop laughing. Ruby Ann is, no doubt, an authority on down home cooking and this book shows how her food and her humor have evolved from the first witty cookbook she wrote. I have tried several recipes, and they were all great, specially the sauces, and the meats.
If you want to impress your guests or family next time you BBQ, this book has many many recipes that will make you show off your cooking skills. And it is a kick to read. You will be sure to wipe away a tear from both the heat from the spice in the hot sauces and the humor in the entire book.
FALL DOWN FUNNY AND TASTY.......2003-12-12
I ran across this while I was looking for a good barbeque book. The cover caught my eye, but the recipes grab hold of my taste buds and wouldn't let go. I ended up buying this book and when I got it home, my wife told me that she had one of Ruby Ann Boxcar's first cookbooks. She asked me if I'd read it at all and I told her that I'd looked at a lot of the recipes. Well, while I prepared the dinner and cooked up the Sassy Sauce recipe, my wife started reading the book aloud. We laughed and laughed all night long. Even during dinner, my wife and I would switch off reading the stories in-between bites. And the sauce was great. Since then we've cooked up all the sauces and a lot of the meat selections, and we haven't been disappointed yet. We even like the Dr Pepper chicken. We've also bought the rest of her books and have become the life of the party when we attend gatherings because we bring one of her recipes with us. People can't wait to see what dish we will uncover. I would highly suggest that if you are looking for unique, tasty, simple to make BBQ, as Ruby Ann calls it, then get this book. And it also makes a great gift for your boss, brother, dad, or any other man in your life. Even though it is funny as can be, it is also full of mouthwatering recipes that you can cook out on the grill or even inside on your Foreman grill.
THANK YOU RUBY ANN BOXCAR!.......2003-09-07
I loved her first two books even though I'm not one for cooking so to speak, but I laughed the entire time I read them. And then when I saw this one online, I thought there was no way she could top herself. Well, I was wrong, and she has done it again. I took this with us on our family vacation across country, and while I drove, my wife read the book to us. There were a few times we actually had to pull the car over! Plus we used several of the tips and a lot of the recipes that Ruby Ann has in this book, and they were fantastic! I love the sauces. Since Ruby Ann and her neighbors will eat any type of BBQ, this book has a great mix of the tomato based sauces as well as the Eastern non-tomato based ones. And the recipes are so easy to make that I was even cooking a little this summer. What she does with meat should be illegal it is so good. Plus she also fills you in on what has been going on with the people of the High Chaparral Trailer Park since her last cookbook (the holiday one), which makes her series a sort of an All My Children meets Green Acres meets COPS meets the Food Network. I have to give this book two BBQ sauce stained thumbs up! Thanks you Ruby ann Boxcar.
the quick picker upper.......2003-06-10
well I thank Ruby Ann for bringing me up when I was down. Her book is hilarious and also some great recipes that I might also try in my 5 star restaurant. Seen her at a signing recently and let me tell you she was the highlight of the day!! If you dont have it buy it , it is a must have for great food and laughs, thanks again Ruby are a true downhome friend!!!!!
