Book Description
Set in turn of the century Japan in the world of the Noh theater, and in Paris during the heady days when French Impressionism was the avant-garde, this heartbreaking, beautifully written novel tells of a young Japanese artist who sacrifices everything: family, love and wealth for his art.
A Master Noh mask carver dedicates his life to his art, turning his back on love after a series of tragic events leaves him devastated. Kiyoki, his only son, defies his father and the demands of cultural tradition to follow his dream of becoming a painter in the western style. Kiyoki journeys to Paris, where he lives the life of an exile, unable to break the bonds of tradition, until he finds his heart leads him back to Japan, where he at last discovers himself as an artist.

A Rebirth of the Soul through Time's Fire.......2006-06-08
`To be in a state of unawareness is the highest goal for a carver,' whispers the master, his voice already lost in the wind.
Alyson Richman wrote an especially poetic debut novel and after reading The Mask Carver's Son, I can't imagine not reading every book she writes. Her delicate writing style softens tragedy and awakens beauty.
"On the days when her early departure left a coldness and an aching emptiness in their bed, he would rise minutes after her. He would walk toward their small paper window and slide it ever so slightly to one side. Just to watch her, if only for a moment, as she glided through the garden as ethereal as a ghost."
The detailed descriptions of Kiyoki's life are inspired by Meiji period artists and will be deeply appreciated by anyone who is inclined towards heightened aesthetic awareness. There is no need to be an artist to understand the emotions and longings of Kiyoki, but you may find yourself wishing to learn to paint or to enter this fascinating world where he lives and breathes beauty as if it is life itself. The scent of cedar wood lingers throughout the pages, as does the scent of fresh paint on a canvas and plums freshly plucked from a tree. Sorrow and love mingle effortlessly and create a bittersweet story of hope despite struggle.
As Kiyoki struggles with the ghosts of his past, he comes to terms with his place in the world as opposed to his ancestor's wishes and dreams for his life. The Mask Carver's Son is not only a story of an artist's life; it is a place you may wish to live. The writing leaves you feeling nostalgic for a world you can only access through this book. If you love stories like Memoirs of a Geisha, this story may intrigue you.

Every Single Page is Stunning.......2003-04-11
Actually, even every paragraph is stunning. This author, in a dynamic, sensual and sculpted first novel, manages to tell a page-turning story whose every sentence is beautiful. It's a book that should be read slowly and indulgently so that nothing is missed. The story's subject, among others, is art, and the prose almost reads as a series of tiny paintings, so vivid is the language and so powerful are the images. And in keeping with the tale's Japanese heritage, the prose sometimes reads as a series of haiku, so acute is the attention paid to singular moments and to essential objects and to the symbols that surround us in ordinary life. Especially as a first novel, the MCS overachieves, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Poetic Prose.......2002-09-25
I can only describe this novel as lyrical; the language sets the tone for the entire tale. A young man struggles with the decision to persue his dream even though he feels it might be disrespectful to his foster father. The artistic talent he has is both a blessing and a curse and his personal relationships suffer because of that.
Ms. Richman's writing is crisp and ethereal at the same time and the reader is transported to another time and place that is almost palpable. Ignore the editorial spelling mistakes and enjoy this book for the art it is.
A Novel to Treasure and Appreciate - Six Stars.......2001-05-18
A friend of mine recommended this novel to me. Once I began reading it, I found it hard to put it down. Then, after reading it from cover to cover, after a few days I felt the urge to read it again. This was the first time in my life that I had ever done something like that. Reading "The Mask Carver's Son" the second time was even more rewarding and meaningful for me. The images in the book, as if painted by an artist, are exquisite and the story is told in a true Japanese manner. The emotions of the characters are carefully controlled, remaining under the surface. Yet, the story is a powerful one and one that is based on the real- life experiences of actual artists. Like other reviewers that have reviewed this book, I cannot believe that the author is not Japanese. Even more surprisingly, I found that the author is a young woman. She has written a novel of unbelievable beauty - perhaps better than any Japanese author might have created. I recommend it highly. It deserves six stars.
Fizzled.......2001-03-14
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Kiyoki (the son of a great mask carver) forsakes his family history, duty, and lover for his painting, which he pursues in Paris. There's powerful stuff here about family betrayals and about art consuming one's life. I felt so much promise with the story, and yet it seemed to lack closure at the end of the novel. The family estrangements are (rightfully) unresolved, but I was expecting a different ending. Also, I noticed too many editorial errors which I found distracting.
Book Description
In The Mirror of Her Dreams, the dazzling first volume of Mordant’s Need, New York Times bestselling author Stephen R. Donaldson introduced us to the richly imagined world of Mordant, where mirrors are magical portals into places of beauty and terror. Now, with A Man Rides Through, Donaldson brings the story of Terisa Morgan to an unforgettable conclusion. . . .
Aided by the powerful magic of Vagel, the evil Arch-Imager, the merciless armies are marching against the kingdom of Mordant. In its hour of greatest need, two unlikely champions emerge. One is Geraden, whose inability to master the simplest skills of Imagery has made him a laughingstock. The other is Terisa Morgan, transferred to Mordant from a Manhattan apartment by Geraden’s faulty magic. Together, Geraden and Terisa discover undreamed-of talents within themselves—talents that make them more than a match for any Imager . . . including Vagel himself.
Unfortunately, those talents also mark them for death. Branded as traitors, they are forced to flee the castle for their lives. Now, all but defenseless in a war-torn countryside ravaged by the vilest horrors Imagery can spawn, Geraden and Terisa must put aside past failures and find the courage to embrace their powers—and their love—before Vagel can spring his final trap.

Much Better Than the First Book.......2007-07-06
This is book 2 of the two book series, but 90% of the story is in this book alone. The first book introduced the characters, had them engage in meaningless chit-chat, and wander around in circles waiting for the story to be told in book 2. I suspect that many readers never made it through the really slow boring first book, and therefore never got to this one. The fact that there are nearly 3 times as many reviews for the first book versus this one confirms this impression. This book is 100% better than the first one, because something actually happens in this one. The whole story would have been much better if it had been edited down to a single book.
I still could only give this book a 3 star rating........the story is entertaining, but not the greatest. I just could not really get around the kings fake madness ploy, which was supposed to draw his "unknown" enemy to attack him. Instead, it seems that only his loyal friends were attacked and killed, and the whole ploy did nothing to reveal the identity of the bad guys. The other problem with this story is that once you learn about the magic of the mirrors, it becomes very apparent that the evil bad guys could have taken over the world very simply without all the screwing around they did in the story. Reading the book was sort of like watching an old episode of Batman. The villains could never just put a bullet in Batman's head when they captured him. Instead they had to tie him to some weird contraption that would kill him slowly, while they left him alone. This always gave Batman the chance to escape, just as the villains in the story always gave the heroes plenty of time to come up with a desperate escape at the last second. The ending of the story was very protracted. It is obvious what is going to happen 75 pages from the end, but the story keeps going and going........like a death scene from one of the old silent films.
If you are going to read this series, I would recommend reading the first and last chapters of the first book and skipping the rest, then reading this one.
The conclusion of a good yarn.......2007-04-22
Donaldson finishes off his two volume tale with the same even and consistent story telling as when he began. The story moves right along with the main characters becoming stronger and more sure of themselves as the villains continue to apply pressure. After more surprises, twists and turns, the mystery unfolds at the end in a complete and satisfying way. I recommend the series to anyone looking for an elegant, well written adult fairy tale (warning: due to numerous and graphic sexual situations, I do not recommend this book to children).
In my Top 3.......2005-08-04
The sequel to The Mirror of Her Dreams, one of my top 3 Fantasy novels, the others being this one and Beauty by Sherri Tepper. Donaldson creates a fabulous medieval style world of magic that connects with other worlds through the mirrors of its wizards. His heroine begins flawed and uncertain, hooks up with a bumbling apprentice, and together, they become the most powerful in the realm
If you like fantasy, this one has it all.......2005-01-30
Stephen Donaldson's A Man Rides Through, while not as unique and exceptionally written as his Thomas Covenant Chronicles, exhibits a thourough understanding of a good fantasy novel. Set in the world of cloaks and daggers, swirling mist and mirrors, we once again watch the classic fight between good and evil. Donaldson garnishes the time-worn conflict with fast-jumping logic and reason, as the various players in the story race to out-guess and outsmart each other. In the midst of the tumult Terisa and Geraden, the friends of the previous book, have fallen in love and struggle to protect what they hold dear: their love, their friends and family, and the kingdom of Mordant.
Discovering Self and Genuine Love.......2004-11-08
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Donaldson depicts the despair and confusion that result from lives turned awry: in Teresa's case by childhood abuse/neglect and in Geraden's case by an inability to understand and use his gifts, in the realm's case by a hero-king who has stopped defending the kingdom. These confusions lead the characters in mistakes and dilemmas so true to life that I have read every one of Donaldson's long-winded words to discover what these two books say about despair and hope, confusion and clarity, seduction and care, and the redemptive possibility of hope. This book (Part Two) and _The Mirror of Her Dreams_ (Part One) are not (in my opinion) as dismal, dark and despairing as others Donaldson has written.

Book Description
He is perhaps the ultimate human achievement: a sentient artificial life-form -- self-aware, self-determining, possessing a mind and body far surpassing that of his makers, and imbued with the potential to evolve beyond the scope of his programming. Created by one of the most brilliant and eccentric intellects the Federation has ever known, the android Data has always believed he was unique, the one true fulfillment of a dream to create children of the mind.
But is he?
Investigating the mysterious destruction of a new android created by Starfleet, Data and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise uncover startling secrets stretching back to the galaxy's dim past. That knowledge is coveted by beings who will stop at nothing to control it, and will force Data to redefine himself as he learns the hidden history of artificial intelligence.
Customer Reviews:
The one of the best Trek books!.......2003-12-07
This book introduced a plot that tied a few lose ends to some of the original series episodes. It seemed to get a little boring in the middle, but there's a lot of action. You get to see Data do things he normally wouldn't do (like falling in love or meeting other androids, even if they were paranoid). It also has parts in it about Dr. Noonien Soong, which fit into the story perfectly. It's a must for a TNG fan. I've read it four times.
Good, but not immortal.......2003-11-30
Immortal Coil is, ostensibly, about Data coming to grips with his own immortality. Barring catastrophe (or blowing himself up on a Romulan warbird), Data will outlive all those close to him, a prospect the emotion-chipped Data worries over. Such is the theme that should pervade the book, but all it receives is the occasional lip-service.
Instead, we are given a plot that ties in threads from several TOS episodes, including the infamous Roger Korby. There is even a cameo by "Norman" of Harcourt Fenton Mudd fame. The attempt to draw all the TOS androids into the TNG "Data Is Unique" universe is well-done and should be satisfying to all Trek fans. Non Trek fans, however, will probably be left cold (but then why would a non-Trek fan be reading this, anyway?).
Perhaps the biggest plus to Immortal Coil is a chance to see Data struggling with his emotions and identity, something we only get to see in First Contact (Immortal Coil takes place sometime after First Contact). That alone makes this one worth the time of any Trek fan, but there's nothing here to appeal to the general public. Ultimately, it's standard Trek fare.
Among the Best!.......2003-11-14
I've enjoyed reading Star Trek novels for years and I've read a lot of them. This one is among the best that I have ever read! Jeffrey Lang has done an excellent job of pulling together some obsure characters from earlier Star Trek series and putting them in a very plausible story line. I kept getting new surprises right on up to the end. I'll be looking for more from this author. If you are looking for a Star Trek story with a fresh plot try this one!
A book written with the Trekkie in mind.......2003-08-30
My favorite of all Star Treks Series is by far TNG (The Next Generation). As a pretty avid fan of TNG I have seen probably 90% of the shows, most a few times. I love the show, and movies that have been made about Star Trek and this book is just an extension of that quality i've enjoyed over the years. The book itself, reads really quickly at 330 pages. I read it in 2 days, and i'm not a very fast reader, i just couldn't put the book down. The story is very unique, and as always with Star Trek, very interesting. The characters, and the emphasis in this story on Data's history, are quite believable. The story, after having read it, reminds me more of a Star Trek movie, than just an episode. The only down side to the story that i can think of was that it was purely about Data. The references made in the book (to previous episodes and movies) are what make this really a book written with the true Trekkie in mind. I would reccomend this book to anyone with an interest in TNG.
Fun Read for TNG Fans.......2003-04-24
This is one of the better Star Trek books. The author tried really hard (perhaps too hard!) to pull together lots of plot lines from TOS and TNG, and succeeded for the most part. It's readable and enjoyable.

A Book That Appeals to All.......2001-01-31
This book is great for anyone looking for a readable yet profound way to enter into spirituality. As the title says, it is a "guide" to contemplation. Instead of reading someone else's thoughts and experiences--however powerful and moving those can be--the style of this book easily leads the reader to reflect on his or her own life. Fr. Kennedy uses gospel passages, stories of people he has known (incarcerated youth, gang members, immigrants), and beautiful poetic descriptions of gospel scenes to invite the reader into a deep place of prayer. The setup makes it very easy to enter into the meditation, whether one spends a long period praying or is looking for a simple and quick method to squeeze prayer into a busy day. I've done both, and the effects go beyond just the prayer. Fr. Kennedy's meditations change the way I go through the day, since they open the heart and mind to find God in the process of living life, even ordinary daily life. The best feature of this book is that it leads so naturally to prayer and reflection, especially important if, like me, you're busy or struggle to find a method that works for you. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Marlon page 92.......2001-01-13
This book and Mike's methods of meditation continue to help the kids of juvenile hall, the prisoners of death row and prisoners all over the nation. It gives them spiritual healing.
Iknow because I am one of those he healed, he was the presence of Jesus in physical form for me. My name is found when you turn to page 92. I was the only lost sheep that was able to leave the concrete and steel cells of the California correctional system.

This book is a shocker. Don't waste your money. Save it up and buy David Thompson's excellent Thai Food, and the recent Quick and Easy Thai.
not that great.......2003-07-28
As cookbooks go, this series is lackluster. The photography seems to have a yellowish cast - and the food does not look very appetizing. The recipes are complicated and the writing is dry. I had purchased quite a few titles in this series and sent them all back.
One of the best of the "Food of" series........2003-03-30
I started with the Food of Asia, which I think is excellent. I decided to check into some specific cuisines, such as Thailand, of the seven cuisines that are presented in the Food of Asia. I am a little torn about many of the other cuisines, but not for Thailand.
The individual books in the "Food of" series by Periplus have extensive introductions. There are not as many recipes as I had hoped for. The ingredients list, along with the accompanying commentaries, are about the same, with an equivalent number of photos, as the Food of Asia. The Food of Asia contains many of the recipes, however, some do not have a photo.
The variety of main ingredients here is quite good, including chicken, duck, fish, beef, pork, all the shellfish, a couple of specific vegetables such as kale and green beans that go with a meat, and a general vegatable stir-fry that can be used with any vegetable.
The ingredients list is thourough, and there is little need for substitutions or omissions. Also, many of the spice pastes can easily be purchased pre-mixed. Some of the ingredients are obtainable primarily online, but unlike many of the other cuisines in the "Food of" series, Thai and Indian online stores are plenty.
In the case of "Food of Thailand", I think it is definitely worth the purchase if you really like Thai food, rather than my general suggestion that "Food of Asia" is the place to start. "Food of Asia" contains many of the recipes that are in "Food of Thailand", but the extra ones in "Food of Thailand" are worth purchasing this cuisine separately.
Hope this helps.
Tasty Thai Tome.......2001-03-03
A book that is both lovely and practical, with a mouth-watering selection of do-able recipes, 64 in all. It includes brief chapters on the history of the food, regional cooking, palace cuisine, and more; and an informative chapter on Thai ingredients describes 48 exotic ingredients, some with photos, from 'agar-agar' to 'water spinach'. The recipe directions are concise and clearly written. I like the fact that the recipes are not overly complicated and the number of ingredients called for in most of the recipes is fairly small. Many of the recipes are simple and in my opinion authentic and non-westernized. One thing they do not tell you is how spicy the resulting dish will be. "Red Chicken Curry with Bamboo Shoots" and "Pumpking Custard" are my favorites. Last but not least, if you are like me and love the visuals, sumptuous color photos abound, with exquisitely presented food in beautiful (table) settings, some with fascinating antiques or objets-d'art.
Customer Reviews:
Best book for beginning asian cooking..........2003-02-12
This book is incredible. First, the photography is excellent, beautifully portraying most of the recipes. The book begins with a complete listing of all of the ingredients used. It is about 6 pages of pertinent information, including pictures for some of the most obscure ingredients. The recipes cover a thorough range of the basic recipes that you may be looking for. I am Indian and am thrilled with the list. Just about every recipe is critical, they appear back-to-back and have several pictures. I will probably cook every recipe in the Indian section. That section alone makes it worth the purchase. However, it covers seven other asian cuisines in a very similar manner. It also offers enticing "melting pot" menus, mixing the cuisines. You will get the recipes you want, that you can make, with a little commentary and exquisite pictures. This is one of the best cook books I have ever seen.

NEW & BETTER SOLUTIONS, EXPERT ADVICE, EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN,.......1998-03-23
I have bought many woodworking books over the years and this is by far the BEST BOOK OF ITS KIND I have found. Most woodworking books promise much more than they deliver, some giving solutions that are repeated again-and-again in other books and magazines year-after-year, some of which aren't really that good. "The Woodworkers Problem Solver" gives DIFFERENT AND BETTER SOLUTIONS to many of the usual problems and also addresses problems that don't seem to show up in other reference sources. It draws upon the knowledge of many quite a number of proven experts in the various disciplines of woodworking. The name of the contributor is listed with each solution, most of whom will be recognized by seasoned woodworkers as being the best in their field. In addition to solutions, a piece on "Avoiding the problem" is presented for some of the solutions. "Another View" is occasionally presented which gives a totally different, sometimes unorthodox approach to solving the problem. Excellent pictures, drawings, diagrams and charts are provided whenever needed to clarify the text. Boxed sections are used throughout to explain in full detail a how a certain procedure should be done in the first place to minimize mistakes and problems. With over 300 fully filled pages, the book is also a good value. I think both experienced and novice woodworkers will find this book very helpfull as well as interesting, enjoyable reading. It could take the place of half a dozen poorly written incomplete books that I already have on my shelves.
Excellent book! Found 4 tips I could use right away!.......1998-03-12
This book is so good I just ordered one for a fellow woodworker friend. Easy to use tips and even though some may seem a little unconventional, they work.

music teacher and James Brown fan.......2003-12-31
Of all the books I have in regards to Mr. Brown, I couldn't find the groove of this one. For me, it was trying to be too
philosophical about Mr. Brown's career. (example: just because Mr. Brown is African-American does not mean his music was inspired by some mystic African "spirits" from the "motherland;" maybe Mr. Brown just developed a new groove and went with it! Just because I have Scottish blood in me, doesn't mean I hear bagpipes in my sleep). There are certainly other books available that better describe Mr. Brown's life and career.
