5 out of 5 stars Great follow up to The Wizard's Ward.......2005-08-29

This was a great follow up to The Wizard's Ward. I liked how the characters from the first book were incorporated into the second. I also liked that some of the characters were more complex (some bad characters were really good, and some of the good characters were really bad). There were certainly twists in the story that I was not expecting, and the action heats up in the second half of the book.

      5 out of 5 stars perfectly delightful.......2005-08-26

I thoroughly enjoyed The Destined Queen. The sea battle was exciting. The love elements are passionately written. The danger elements are mixed in perfectly. Deb Hale keeps you in suspense while her characters struggle to find a way to succeed in their individual quests. If you enjoy romantic adventure, you should buy this book.

      2 out of 5 stars Stunningly simplistic.......2005-08-24

I did not find this book even mildly interesting. The characters were simplistic and Maura was almost infantile. Tired plot with clumsily handled dialog. Unbelievably boring.

5 out of 5 stars romantic fantasy at its very best.......2005-07-27

When Maura Woodbury started on her quest to find the Waiting King she was destined to marry him as she was THE DESTINED QUEEN. She is accompanied by outlaw Rath Talward. They fall in love but it is not until the Sacred Glade that Rath is revealed as the Waiting King, the reincarnation of King Elzeban who is destined to return to help Umbria in the darkest hour which is now as the cruel and oppressive Hans rules with an iron fist.

A small bird carrying a message tells them to go the Vestan Islands. When they arrive, the islanders, who fled Umbria when the Hans invaded, give Rath an army to free his countrymen. As the rightful king returns to the homeland Maura must find the staff of Velarken which will grant Rath one wish he must use wisely if he is to defeat the Hans without turning into a tyrant like them.

THE DESTINED QUEEN is romantic fantasy at its very best. The love between the two protagonists gives them the strength against overwhelming odds to believe they can defeat their enemies if they listen to their hearts as well as to their heads. The common people rally around this legendary king but more is needed to oust the enemy from their homeland. Deborah Hale's romantic fantasy is a moving and beautiful tale showcasing two characters who capture the readers interest because they are flawed people trying to do the right thing ever when they are not sure which course that is.

        Book Description

This revised version of Duane Simolke's science fiction adventure Degranon features more gay characters and a sharper focus on diversity themes. On the planet Valchondria, no illness exists, gay marriage is legal, and everyone is a person of color. However, a group called "the Maintainers" carefully monitors everyone's speech, actions, and weight; the Maintainers also force so-called "colorsighted" people to hide their ability to see in color.

The brilliant scientist Taldra loves her twin gay sons and thinks of them as the hope for Valchondria's future, but one of them becomes entangled in the cult of Degranon, while the other becomes stranded on the other side of a doorway through time. Can they find their way home and help Taldra save their world?

        "A must read."
--Joe Wright, reviewer for StoneWall Society (http://www.stonewallsociety.com).

"A reminder of the danger of fanaticism."
--Mark Kendrick, author of the gay time-travel romance Stealing Some Time.

"Duane Simolke's latest offering is a fascinating scifi excursion into a world as unique as his singular vision."

        4 out of 5 stars Complicated, enjoyable.......2006-08-07

If you love science fiction and you don't mind gay heroes or a complicated plot, then you should read this novel. I enjoyed it and hope to read more by Duane Simolke. There was an earlier version of Degranon, but Simolke rewrote it and added more gay characters. I haven't read the first version, but I like this one.

Degranon is another world, or a religion, or just a book - depending on who you ask. Whatever it really is, it's a threat to the survival of the planet where Taldra and her family live.

1 out of 5 stars Painfully adolescent and amateurish.......2006-03-31

While I feel somewhat bad criticizing someone's first work, Degranon is just not ready for public consumption. There is a reason it was not printed by one of the major printing houses. It feels like it was written by a thirteen year-old. I think the best way to illustrate this is to give some examples:
"Sydra instinctively reached for her laser pistol, but then remembered setting it on her desk. The Top Maintainers never allowed weapons in the upper levels of Urloan Control. Apparently, the Top Maintainers never expected the leader of the Degran cult to slip past the most advanced security systems in all of Valchondria. 'What is your aim? What did you do to them?'"
"With his access to Life Unit and his secret understanding of both temporal doorways and spatial doorways, Geln had managed to adjust the doorway enough to get it closer than any of his people had ever gotten to the time of the great kings of Degranon. And now he was taking Taldra's child there. Yes, he would let Telius live, but he would avenge Taldra's rejection, her insult."
"As the lights springing into his face and body allowed his features to emerge, they revealed a middle-aged man of immediately evident wisdom and confidence-his brown head fully shaved, his dark eyes gleaming with wonder, his simple robe stretched by a muscular body. But most surprising and impressive of all, he didn't look the least bit frightened or astounded. Instead, he merely looked delighted and curious, like an explorer who knew where he was going but not what he would find when he arrived."

Eep. I actually feel maybe the book should have between one and two stars, but because I was sucked in by a positive review (five stars!), I feel something of a need to balance it out. The author is trying to follow in the footsteps of other classic dystopian works: Brave New World or 1984, but is not up to the task.

To get some perspective on what I like, I've read and enjoyed a fair bit of science-fiction (including BNW & 1984): just about anything by Neal Stephenson (especially Snow Crash or The Diamond Age), Greg Egan's Quarantine, Dan Simmons' Hyperion, Ender's Game, Gordon R. Dickson, Arthur C. Clarke, Asimov, Saberhagen, Philip K. Dick, Philip Jose Farmer, Brian Aldiss, Greg Bear.... Harlan Ellison also rocks. I also enjoy less serious works (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, or Calahan's Crosstime Saloon). Short fiction, Degranon just hurt. So save your money (or buy my used copy!)

5 out of 5 stars As good as his short stories!.......2004-11-16

I came to Duane Simolke's sci-fi novel, DEGRANON, after first having sampled the author's short stories, as included in THE ACORN GATHERING, Writers Uniting Against Cancer.

DEGRANON is sci-fi that warrants the attention of any serious aficionado, gay or straight, fascinated by alien worlds that mirror our own world -- complete with mind-bending drugs, political machinations, rigid class structures and struggles, cults, small-mindedness, corruption at all levels, loves, hates, aspirations, frustrations -- even bigotry; the planet Valchondria has mainly color-blind societies, long-eliminated prejudices arising from different colored skins having merely evolved into repression of the color-sighted minority by the majority who only see in black and white.

Admitteldy not a breeze-through novel, with its time-travel elements that take the plot from past to present to future to present to past, and its comments upon societal mores and relationships -- experienced through the complications of time travel -- it's nonetheless worth the effort for those who don't mind "food for thought" served up with the dessert of sheer good reading.

NOTE: For those who might prefer an experimental dose of Simolke, before taking on this, his 197-page sci-fi opus, try his and his fellow authors' "shorts" in his non-sci-fi THE ACORN GATHERING which -- all author and editor royalties donated to the American Cancer Soceity -- provides the dual rewards of good reading and benefiting a good cause.

        "Degranon"
        Duane Simolke
        Review by Mountman
Degranon is Duane?s first venture into the world of Sci-Fi. And what a venture it is. Duane really shows just how talented he is with Degranon. When I was asked which of Duane?s book I wanted to review it was very hard for me to choose. As you may know, I reviewed Acorn Stories. I was excited about reading it, but, when I got Degranon, I chose it because I am a Sci-Fi fan from way back.

The story begins on the world of Valchondria. A negative utopia that is ?Maintained? by, who else, the Maintainers, sort of, like the Firemen in Ray Bradbury?s Fahrenheit 451. They watch for people using words from a banned word list. Words that are considered anti-glory to Valchondria, words such as colonization. There are no books, like in Fahrenheit 451, only wallscreens that project the things that the Maintainers want the people of Valchondria to see and think. For their own good, of course.

There is a ?miracle drug that has given the people of Valchondria a virus that makes them immune to almost all diseases and the ravages of time? but, along with that there are things that it takes away also like, the ability to see in color, and hear as many tones as we do now. With this loss people have lost interest in music and anything related to it, such as dancing.

There are some that have not lost the ability to see in color. One such person is Dr. Lorfeltez. A 26-year-old scientist that recently became a representative of the SSC (Supreme Science Council), a strong branch of the government. She is as strong willed as her adversaries. She thinks that Valchondria should reopen space travel exploration, something that is considered anti-glory.

She along with another brilliant scientist, Dr. Nabold, creates Life. Life is a computer that had many tentacles that reach deep into the Valchondria soil looking for energy deposits. There is another ?scientist? along with them, Dr. Geln. Did I say scientist? I forgot to add the word Mad. Dr. Geln is also an operative placed there to watch, and make sure that Life does what it?s actually meant for, creating a doorway to Valchondria?s past.

Dr.?s Lorfeltez and Nabold fall in love and become married. At the same time, Dr. Geln falls in love with Lorfeltez. Which creates some very interesting twists later in the story. When Dr. Lorfeltez becomes pregnant with twins, something that is forbidden on Valchondria, Dr. Geln, with the help of Life, takes one of the twins, Telius, to the past, where Alom brings him up. Alom is an aging priest of his time.

Dr. Geln has got to be fashioned after 20th Century?s worst criminal, Hitler. He creates a youth organization called Youth For Valchondrian Reform. Where he brain washes, Argen, the twin that stayed in Valchondria?s present. Argen, best friend is Kryldon who happens to be same-gendered, something that is considered normal in Valchondrian society. Sometimes it is even preferred. Kryldon unwittingly, gets Argen involved in the Youth For Valchondria?s Reform. You can take it from there.

Whether you are a Sci-Fi fan or not, Degranon is a must read. It is fast paced, and compelling. Thanks Duane for giving us another place and friends I would like to revisit again.

        4 out of 5 stars Exciting, well-constructed SF novel.......2002-06-20

I recommend DEGRANON for its exciting, well-constructed narrative, its often intriguing characters, and its wealth of ideas both political and philosophical.

However, I do have a couple minor - and I hope constructive - quibbles. Although we're all used to colorful invented words in SF (from "Barsoom" to "Arrakis"), too often I scratched my head over whether there was some allegorical, and hence thematic, significance to a word or name. Take "Degranon" for example: It sounds like "degrading" and "anonymous" - and that sort of fits with what's in the novel... but it's not a snug fit. And the gap, both here and in other instances, produced a nagging doubt that I'd missed something important. And that pulled me out of the story.

The characters, although vivid, spoke a bit too much in "exposition-ese." On the other hand, I was often fascinated by the details of Valchondria or Degranon which they revealed. As I said, these are minor criticisms of an ambitious and entertaining novel.

I hope that Simolke will continue exploring these engrossing worlds in future books... or take us to entirely new places.

5 out of 5 stars A Reminder of the Danger of Fanaticism.......2002-04-21

A brilliant scientist, a twisted man who loves her beyond measure, twins separated by time, an ancient religious book, speech-control and more. Mix these up and what do you get? You get Degranon, a fascinating read that blends intrigue, time-travel and the attempted resurrection of what was thought to be an ancient religion. Filled with the undercurrent of how important family is, Mr. Simolke successfully combines all of these elements into a suspenseful story about betrayal, lust for power, love and the need for truth. Set on Valchondria, a far away star-system, Degranon refers to the Book of Degranon, an ancient text that is thought by some to be the ultimate source of truth. But, perhaps it's just a story. Degranon mirrors Earth's current events in many ways. Reflecting the clash of fanatical beliefs due to modern-day monotheistic religions, Degranon speaks to the extremes that they produce in our own civilization, as well as for the civilization that is the setting of this story. I was constantly reminded of our own modern day woes while reading this tome. All in all, Degranon is fitting entry into the science fiction genre.

5 out of 5 stars "Degranon" might be our own world, if we're not careful........2002-02-25

Duane Simolke adds yet another dimension to his diverse literary offerings with this science-fiction novel. He has already established that he can create whole communities with his Acorn Stories-a book of short stories. With his collection of essays and poetry in Holding Me Together, he has shown that he is equally adroit with research and a breath-taking turn of phrase. In Degranon, Simolke brings it all together, creating not a single community, but a whole world. His characters are as unique as anything he creates with his Acorn Stories, but in Degranon, he weaves a tightly plotted story of a planet on the verge of political and social ruin, exacerbated by those with misguided and therefore "evil" intentions. Layer upon layer of intrigue and counter-balancing moves make this scifi story one that will hold your interest and surprise you with its twists and turns. Definitely a good read. --Ronald L. Donaghe, author of the fantasy novel, Cinátis (coming in 2002)

No doubt this book was intended as a reference work and will be used as such by those who purchase it, for the most part. But, being the rather rum fellow that I am, I read the book from cover to cover and must report that it makes a dashed good read, at least for the peculiar bunch who, like myself, enjoy reading through such compilations. Just one fascinating example: I should never have known, had I not read through the work, that, according to ancient folklore, "A man who sees them becomes possessed by nymphs. They punish unresponsive lovers...." or that "Around 400 BC inscriptions mention Archedemus from Thera....who withdrew to a cave to devote himself to a monklike worship of the Nymphs." Clearly, entries like these prove rich ground for pondering male/female relations. And this is just one example! The perfect book for the Classicist near you....or perhaps yourself.

        Book Description

Everyone is familiar with some of the women of classical myth. Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty are particularly well-known, as are the snake-haired Gorgon Medusa, and the vicious harpies, half woman, half beast. Humans, too, have their place in the ancient lore: Medea, who killed her own children to gain revenge upon her husband Jason, and Helen of Troy, whose abduction by Paris incited the ten-year Trojan War. But these figures represent only a handful of the hundreds and hundreds of female characters who played essential roles in the poetry, drama, and folklore that arose from Greek and Roman mythology. And despite the rich diversity of these figures, standard reference works on mythology and related subjects often give them short shrift. This fascinating book is the first and only comprehensive biographical dictionary devoted to mythological women. It offers unprecedented access to information on hard-to-find women in Greek and Roman myth, as well as a fresh look at the better-known figures. From the famous to the obscure, all of them are here--from Cardea, a Roman divinity who protected the hinges of doors, to Echidna, a half-woman, half-serpent who mated with her fire-breathing brother Typhon, to Ate, the goddess of error. In addition, readers will learn new facts about old favorites: how Zeus ordered the proverbially garrulous Echo to distract Hera while he enjoyed sexual relations with Echo's sister nymphs; that Melpomene, muse of tragedy, was reputed to be mother of the sirens; that Diana--known as the Roman equivalent of Artemis, goddess of chastity and the hunt--had been worshiped as a Latin and Sabine diety from a much earlier era. The approximately 2,600 lively, engagingly written entries are arranged alphabetically and completely cross-referenced for easy access, and vary from one sentence to several pages. Each entry places its subject both in the overall context of classical myth, and in the frame of reference of her better-known male counterparts. For each figure there is a description of her particular contribution to folklore, and a list of the various poems, tragedies, epics, and other types of stories in which she plays a central role. In addition, the handy special index "The Men in Their Lives" makes it simple to locate a particular women known primarily through relations, for instance, Theseus's mother, or Achilles's wife. Heroines, murderers, lovers, wives, animals, hermaphrodites, monsters, and transsexuals--the Women of Classical Mythology offers a unique and rich guide to an aspect of ancient literature often overlooked. It will provide readers not only with a valuable reference source, but with hours of delightful browsing.

4 out of 5 stars Useful reference for some less-known female characters.......2002-08-25

I found this book extremely useful, if a little difficult to sometimes find information in. Simply because it is only the women, it is hard sometimes to follow the thread of stories (such as the Trojan War).

As far as there being errors in it (Tammy's comment), the myths come from so many sources that any one version is bound to have disagreements with it. I feel that Robert Bell does a good job of mentioning alternate theories / myths in this book.

4 out of 5 stars a few errors bring it down.......2000-05-17

The basic idea -- present mythology from the view/focus of the female characters is intriguing. However, I found some errors in the biographical style entries so I wouldn't recommend the book as the end all of information on women in classical mythology. The style of each entry makes it easy to read and find what you are looking for with each character. As with all such "dictionaries" the lack of specific citation can also be a problem if a reader wants to double check a statement or do further research -- but then that is what the "encyclopedia" collections are more geared toward.

        5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful!.......2000-04-24

This is the most helpful and comprehensive classical mythology dictionary I have found! Robert E. Bell should write one for the men. If you have a deep lasting love of classical mythology, or even if you just want to learn more, this is the book to buy.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-03-26

My friend bought this book showed me(because he knows I love mythology) and I loved it. It is FULL OF INFORMATION of every female character of the classical mythology and their actions. I really loved this book after reading it, so now I am buying it for my personal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, nostaglic cookbook! .......2006-10-03

Years ago as a young bride I fell upon this wonderful cookbook... for years I would check it out at the local library and then sadly return it! I finally decided to purchase copy and found it was out of print! Years have passed by and by chance I thought I would check for it online thru amazon... and I am thrilled to say that I found a copy!!!! Yeah!!

The recipes are wonderful - and delicious - this is not a cook book for a "modern" cook who wants it all easy and the ingredients are all from scratch - so if you love to cook from scratch and love the taste of old fashioned recipes - I highly recommend it!

I am so thrilled, I am going to purchase copies for my daughters hope chests....

            Thank you , thank you!

THIS COOKBOOK IS A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT. THE RECIPES ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND THE COORDINATING PICTURES ARE A HELP WHEN PRESENTATION IS IMPORTANT! I AM A LIBRARIAN AND WOULD BE REMISS IF I DID NOT MENTION THAT THE BINDING DOES NOT WEAR WELL WITH AGE. THE COOKBOOK IS SO RELIABLE, THAT REPAIRING THE BINDING IS WORTH THE TIME AND REPLACING THE BOOK WITH THE SAME ONE IS A CONSIDERATION.

I have owned this cookbook since it first came out and every recipe I have tried has come out fabulously. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking.

                    Book Description

What would happen if Martha Stewart were abducted by a tribe of trailer park rabbis? Judaikitsch! Filled to the brim with crafts, collectibles, and creative cooking, here’s the ultimate guide to a funky, festive Jewish lifestyle. From everyday kitsch to holiday entertaining-and loads of mishegoss in between-Judaikitsch asks the all-important question: Why eat sushi when there’s Jewshi? Put away that mizrach and hang up the Miz-Rock. Host a Sukkot Luau featuring a Poi Vey Pineapple Mold, and celebrate Rosh Mexicana with a heaping helping of Hava Tequila Pie. Guaranteed to amuse, Judaikitsch encourages readers to don their Starlet of David Sunglasses, buckle their Borscht Belts, and enjoy a ride through a world where Elvis sports sidelocks and cats and dogs wear yarmulkes. At last, essential reading for the Divine Miss Martha in us all.

I stole my first copy of this wonderful work from my mother-in-law.

Amazon have since supplied me three more, with more on order so we can replenish our Friday night coffee table after our guests leave.

Order a copy now, tuck it inside your haggadah, and you'll be able to stay awake until that song about the goat has finished.

Review Update: I'm in so much trouble. Who would think mother-in-laws read this stuff.

I laughed, I cried, and I am thankful that some of the creations are not commercially available (yet).

This book tastefully lampoons American Jewish culture. Sure, some people will find it tacky, and this book is not for them. But for the rest of us, this book will provide years of chuckles. I especially liked the challah plate!

Christian Americans have had marshmallow fluff and Christmas ornaments. Jews, avoiding graven images, have evaded lots of kitsch (except for chopped liver molds). Sure, maybe you've seen Sesame Street kipahs and Nike swoosh dreidels, but what if Bezalel from the Bible and Martha Stewart mated while reading The Jewish Catalog? Naturally, you would have the Traig sisters of the West Coast. This book is not only fun to read, but it provides the instructions on how to create your own kitsch, like the Manischewitz Concord Grape Wine bottle lamp or the Rastafarian Hey-Mohn-Toschen. Divided into eight parts, there are kitsch projects for everyday, Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Hanukkah (burn baby Burn), Purim, Passover, and Shavuot (milk it. do i make you flemmy, baby?). So get up off your tucches, break your dreidel shaped piñata, grab a slice of Hava Tequila Pie, and buy this book. Highlights include the Neil Sedaka Tzedakah Pushke Box (I used an empty band aids box); the Borscht Belt belt; a black velvet Elvis mizrach for your Eastern wall; the Carmen Miranda fruit filled yarmulke; and votive candles for Jewish patrons (the patron Jew of passive aggressive compliments). Replace wasabi with horseradish and you have Jew-shi sushi. Get a jar of Green olives and make some Poi Vey. Is havdalah havdalah without the Spice girls spice box? Is it true that there is Jewish Time? Then make yourself the Jewish Time Zones clock. The book closes with a Hebonics glossary. So gather the mishpocheh, and buy the book, cuz this one is a keeper.

                      Book Description

This book explores how the books of Amos, Hosea and Isaiah use language of creation. This is done by a religion of history approach of ancient Israel with respect to its belief in YHWH as a Creator, and by an exegetical survey of the relevant texts in the prophets mentioned. It is established that creation language was introduced in Israel long before the Exile and is used in a flexible manner, depending on context and situation. Elaborate attention is given to its use in contexts of judgement. This study is relevant for students of the prophets who are looking for a thorough discussion of many texts and a critical examination of some popular views on creation in the Bible.

                          Book Description

Lillian Hellman was the most daring and original playwright of her time. In spite of her three volumes of highly acclaimed memoirs, Hellman has remained an enigma because of her need to conceal her real life and to invent a legend.

Carl Rollyson reveals - through newly discovered diaries, letters, interviews and state department files - the truth about Hellman's controversial political activities, her personal feuds, and her numerous tempestuous love affairs.

Learn the real story of how Hellman and Dashiell Hammett formed their liaison; new information about her lawsuit and feud with Mary McCarthy; and insight into how Hellman attempted to influence a circle of acolytes to defend her reputation.
