Book Description
“The first ten years of my life I was not black.” Thus begins this startlingly eloquent and beautiful tale based on the true story of Kwasi Boachi, a 19th- century African prince who was sent with his cousin, Kwame, to be raised in Holland as a guest of the royal family. Narrated by Kwasi himself, the story movingly portrays the perplexing dichotomy of the cousins' situation: black men of royal ancestry, they are subject to insidious bigotry even as they enjoy status among Europe’s highest echelons. As their lives wind down different paths–Kwame back to Africa where he enlists in the Dutch army, Kwasi to an Indonesian coffee plantation where success remains mysteriously elusive–they become aware of a terrible truth that lies at the heart of their experiences. Vivid, subtle, poignant and profound,
The Two Hearts of Kwasi Boachi is an exquisite masterpiece of story and craft, a heartrending work that places Arthur Japin on a shelf that includes Joseph Conrad, J.M. Coetzee, Kazuo Ishiguro and Nadine Gordimer.
Customer Reviews:
Why, of course, you belong here!!.......2001-03-24
Mr. Japin has succeeded on all fronts with a thorough and powerful chronicle as he assumes the voice of Kwasi Boachi, an Ashanti prince who embodies mockery for the sake and hope of belonging.
The world of Kwasi Boachi, though set in an era apart, stays true to the current reality of Black existence worldwide. You may be a Black prince. You may be a Black slave. At either extreme, you, especially as a Black man, remain far below the worthiness of simple human consideration, and as such can without conflict be at once Prince Nobody and Slave Nobody. Of course, this worldview of Blacks, while tightly upholstered, does not represent an uninterrupted fabric. No man-made construction could be so perfect neither in its evil nor in its goodness. There are right-thinking men and women of all colors who do not subscribe to lies and low thoughts on this matter.
Nevertheless, in the Black case, the fabric retains an amazing consistency under its disguise as an end unto itself. However, the real game is and has always been power and money, not color. Race, however, is probably the most convenient distraction used to establish a hierarchy complete with the areas of high and low pressure necessary for fierce winds to blow. How powerful and perceptive the author's summary in opening the book: Color is not something one has, color is bestowed on one by others.
Kwasi Boachi and his friend Kwame were, in different ways, blind to this fact. Kwasi makes the fatal mistake of attempting to prove his humanity to people who are impervious to believing or acknowledging it. His lifelong friend, Kwame, makes the fatal mistake of fully trusting a romantic notion of culture, not realizing that his notion was incomplete, consisting of only those cultural elements that did not threaten a broader power structure. Gestalt is ugly.
Look at how this tragedy played itself out in the book and think of today's dramas in parallel. Kwasi and Kwame discover that being Black means being treated extraordinarily - extraordinarily badly or extraordinarily well, but never simply as another human being of equal standing. Worse, while the bad treatment has its obvious ill effect, the evil of good treatment manifests itself so subtly as an undertone to a warm embrace.
What is the evil present in good treatment? Well, if a Black man is held up as a marvel, it is because of the shocking truth that a monkey can read, write, and perform human tricks. If he is congratulated, it is patronage that at its height of sincerity merely approaches the professional protocol that demands recognition of obviously uncommon deeds. At its depth see Tiger Woods and Fuzzy Zoeller for a prime example:
"That little boy is driving well and he's putting well," Zoeller said. "He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it?" Then, as he was walking away, Zoeller snapped his fingers and added, "Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."
This is the sentiment that says, "Wow, the monkey plays golf like a champion!" and gives new meaning to "greens fees". Racial prejudice is a distraction, an effective tool for stifling productive exchange and maintaining artificial but profitable differences between people. The masses of white people who maintain this system unwittingly are not compensated to the degree of their cooperation. Their pay has traditionally been "Thank God you are better than the Negro". Hardly negotiable but yet strangely satisfying. And, by definition, Blacks aren't compensated for submission - these days taking the form of inferiority complexes and sham rebellions. Now, while we both argue, someone is smiling on our trivia and counting white, black, brown, and Green money in neat, non-discriminatory stacks.
Racism alone cannot defeat a people - not by far. But, we would be silly not to recognize it for what it is and for what it does. The Two Hearts of Kwasi Boachi is a telling microcosm, and, in that, is much larger than black and white. However, given the role of race in public discourse, I thought it worth taking time with the racial surface of this book.
A African Prince's Attempted Entrance Into World Of Whites.......2001-03-07
A well researched mid 19th century histrory of two Ghanian Princes who are sent to be educated in Holland only to encounter the depths of prejudice, a prejudice which is unspoken but a governing fact. Truly accepted by a few, a novelty for many, with no one willing to acknowledge the truth. It is a miracle that today Kwashi Boachi has decendants who can know the story of their forebearer and be proud of him as a caring, sensive human being. While the early part of the book was a bit slow, I found myself wanting to learn the story of the cousins lives and the truths these lives speak to us.

Fourth Book of Swords.......2007-01-11
This book does not deserve to be in print. It wanders too far from where the story needs to be,I wish I could get a refund for it.
Great Book, Slow Start.......2000-04-06
I think I've read this whole series, or at least the books I can get my hands on that is. The books are excellent, with well-developed characters and interesting story line. The author uses a system of magic I haven't seen anywhere else, the universe is based on group belief, if enough people believe something it's real... as people lose belief it dies... Well Far slayer's story is about 2 feuding families who hate each other so much; they forget what they hate each other for. Far Slayer enters their world and the two families start killing each other off... There is a Romeo And Juliet thing going here too... it starts slow, but ends well... I enjoyed it very much... just hang in through the beginning and you'll be glad you did.

Book Description
The renegade pirates of the giant spaceship THUNDER have collected all five of the rings necessary to eliminate the threat of Master System forever. But no one -- not even Hawks -- knows how the rings are used. And with Master Systems space fleet dogging their every step, they better find out fast!
Customer Reviews:
Fun but still not as good as book two.......2006-06-27
In Masks of the Martyrs Jack Chalker brings his strangely fun space swashbuckler to a close. Hawks and his crew of pirates/revolutionaries must take the last two rings and shut down Master System all while dodging the tyranical computer's minions as well as those who would use the rings to rule humanity themselves. We find out more details about the pirates of the Thunder, Chalker again puts them in a really bizarre situation in order to get ring four, and there is lots of fun to be had in the heroics and space battles.
This book falls short in that the end was something of an anticlimax and I did not find myself really caring for the the characters I followed through the four books. Somewhere about halfway through I began to feel detached and a little bored at times. However, Chalker came through with some memorable moments and truly inventive situations that kept me going to the end.
Lots of fun!.......2002-07-20
This series may not have the deepest writing or characters, but the plot over the 4-book series is intricate and sustained ingeniously throughout. This is one of the few series I've read where the final book is actually satisfying and a great conclusion. It's a little like Star Wars meets The Terminator, where the protagonists have to fight terrible odds against an evil artificial intelligence which has taken over Earth. Highly recommended!
Great entertainment.......2000-07-08
The Rings of the Master books are the kind of science fiction that you like to read over and over again. They are not particularly original - after all, there have been countless books written about computers being in control of humankind. But they're fun to read, the characters are great, and the aliens are as weird as aliens can be. And I have to say, the code that the protagonists have to eventually figure out at the end is pretty genius - see if you can decipher it before they do! I give this series three stars for content, five stars for enjoyment. Don't bother with it if you're in the mood for something really deep and earthshaking, but I still number these four books among my favorites. Happy reading!

Book Description
Any practitioner, after meditating for some time, inevitably wonders what meditation method the historical Buddha Shakyamuni himself used while beneath the Bodhi Tree. Many people understand that prior to his realization, Shakyamuni Buddha studied with many of great yogis of his time, but most do not know what method he ultimately found leads most directly to Nirvana. In Ajhan Buddhadasa Bhikku's book, Mindfulness With Breathing, the Thai meditation master provides practitioners with penetrating insights into the Anapanasati Sutta, the sacred canonical text which many believe is the most direct transmission of Shakyamuni Buddha's breath meditation methods. Combined with a concise translation of the Sutta itself, Mindfulness With Breathing is one of the best guides to Buddhist meditation practice available in the English language.
Customer Reviews:
The Original Bhuddism.......2007-01-25
I study Taoism, which involves Taoist breathing, so what I am involved with is not exactly the same as the Bhuddist Pranayama presented here. I mention this only to state my objectivity in surveying the techniques of another tradition.
Bhuddism in the West is steeped in cultural misunderstandings, and often a result of this is that people associate Bhuddism with something it is not. This book is invaluable for presenting the practical aspects of Bhuddism that anyone from any culture or religious background can benefit from, while at the same time clarifying what Bhuddism is really about.
This text presents for Western readers the classic approach to Bhuddism, the Pranayama passed down by Gautama Bhudda. It is urgent you grasp the importance of "classical." In the West much of the information we receive is diluted in order to be digestable. This book reveals the complete way the information was intended to be passed on. The inclusion of Pali terms is purposeful; they have no translation in English and are essential to the practice. Serious students should by all means make the effort to grasp these concepts.
Bhuddism was the evolution of balance from Hinduism which is often extreme. In that light, people who practice Indian Yoga forms of Pranayama(breathing) will find this information to be evolutionary. Indian Pranayama often is practiced holding the breath, or while breathing rapidly, or forced breathing. This book emphasizes smooth, long, natural breathing, and shortly thereafter progresses to breathing with deeper and deeper aspects of ones "being" rather than emphasizing the physical breath.
Note that the entire book is a commentary on Gautama Bhudda's "Anapanasati Sutra." It is akin to a work by the Bhudda himself. Don't expect it to be a one time read. Expect to read it ten times, and then twenty times more. At the end of the day, the best way to learn the material is from a qualified instructor or by devoting time to practice in a monastery with qualified monks. Understanding the material in this book will give you the background for such training.
I sincerely hope this review is useful in helping at least one person come closer to finding inner peace.
Excellent book for serious beginners or more advanced students.......2006-03-18
This book is a deep exploration of Insight Meditation based on the Anapanasati Sutra. It is very detailed and contains quite a few Pali terms, but it goes beyond most popular books in depth. It was translated from Thai and is not the smoothest book in the world to read. However, it covers lots of ground in a short space and is a good supplment to other texts such as Breath by Breath by Larry Rosenberg.
Larry Rosenberg's book covers a lot of the same material, but is geared more toward a Western audience and doesn't get as deeply into the Pali terminology, the underlying philosophy, etc. I see the two books as useful and complimentary. Together they constitute a good comprehensive introduction to Insight Meditation.
Should Read From Other Books Too.......2003-07-15
Do not confuse anymore about mindfulness breathing.
I would like readers to read from
Mindfulness of Breathing by Bhikkhu by Nanamoli
and
Manual of Mindfulness of Breathing by Mahathera Ledi Sayadaw
A Model Textbook!.......2000-01-06
The Anapanasati Sutta is a system of exercises and experiments in breathing and awareness applied to the body, feelings, mind, and spirit. It is presumed that by employing this method, the Buddha achieved enlightenment. It is difficult to imagine a more powerful exposition of these steps than that given by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (Ajan Buddhadasa). Buddhadasa Bhikkhu was perhaps the most influential teacher of Buddhism in the history of Thailand. Although he did not have much formal education, he was honored by many doctoral degrees. The translator, Santikaro Bhikkhu, after serving in the Peace Corps in Thailand, returned in l985 to become the translator for Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, and today is the abbot of a monostery. From the translator's faithfulness to his task, the personality of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu emerges: clear, practical and posssessing gentle, good humor. Both Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and Santikaro Bhikkhu felt that many Pali terms did not translate easily into English. Consequently their inclusion was necessary. The reader is given three ways to grasp these terms; 1). A glossary, 2). In-text definitions and, 3). Grasping the terms in context through reading and study of the text. Through the Pali terms and the clear presentation of the core ideas of Buddhism, the reader if not enlightened, will at least be well-educated. The reader is taken gently and closely through every step of the way, starting with suggestions for reading the text. Always the reader is encouraged to do his/her best with what is available, which is exactly how Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and Santikaro Bhikkhu prepared this model of what a text book should be. The lectures this book were based on, were originally given to Westerners, consequently the reasoning behind ideas is emphasized. For instance, it is pointed out that any body process, not only breathing, can be used for this type of study. Should the reader not be prepared to undertake the path of "serious beginner" at this time, other less rigorous methods are described.
Prepare to learn Pali !.......1999-06-17
As a newcomer to Buddhism and meditation I found this book rather difficult to get through due to the extensive use of Pali terms. There is a glossary which gets much use as one reads along going ,"now what did this word mean again?" It makes for very choppy reading and understanding , the concepts do not flow when you have to learn foreign terms every sentence. It is a very thorough explanation of the anapanasati sutta.

Rceipes the way they were originally done.......2006-06-26
A wonderful set of recipies that show how they do, and did, cooking on the ranch and trail. Many of the recipies include background material about their origin. Especially interesting were the western and cowboy lore interspersed througout the book.
Entertaining as well as tastey.......2001-08-26
I once bought this book at a Ranch in the South Dakota Black Hills. It has since been misplaced, so I just ordered a replacement copy. The book was outstanding, as the recipe's were framed in vivid historical anecdotes about how they fit into everyday Cowboy life. As you prepare dishes, you can almost envision the Cowboys hungrily waiting! Most of the recipes are also delicious!

Book Description
In this book each double-page spread evokes things the author treasures for their antiquity. He praises "old towns, where streets whisper the secrets of the years, their buildings leaning against one another like family dogs asleep." Accompanying this is a color reproduction of a painting in which an aged town slumbers in the moonlight.
Some of the old things honored in this book are houses, gardens, trees, books, customs, shops and holidays.

Stylish and affordable solutions for organizing all spaces.......2000-01-02
A book with a European flair. Very stylish, very cozy, yet affordable suggestions (a veritable miracle). Most applicable to city dwellings, but also simply beautiful for all aspects of interior design (color photographs throughout). It has sections with general comments on space organization (adding in addition to reorganizing existing space), then room-by-room suggestions, including a section on single-room living. Finally, the appendix has plans for building some simple useful pieces. It treats all aspects of a home--floors, walls (with windows and window treatments), furniture, room proportions, color, plants. I return to it often for ideas even now that I do not have a space crunch. If you want a single design book for your whole home, this is the book. I have yet to find another one as beautiful and as useful.

Book Description
This is the story of the little girl with the great voice who sang out to America with the Big Bands of Harry James and Tommy Dorsey and sang shoulder-to-shoulder with Frank Sinatra, who both won the title "The Best Boy and Girl Singer of the Era."
Customer Reviews:
Love the big band singers........2001-10-17
My parents alerted me to this book. It's different, as the singers of today do not sing songs. They talk to a beat. Connie Haines sang with Tommy Dorsey's fine orchestra when Frank Sinatra was also a singer with his band. They did lots of duets together. I think that Helen Forrest and Connie Haines were the two best singers of those big band days. Her's is an interesting story that stresses her religious faith and how she overcame distress in her life. The photos are great, too. I understand she is still singing today with the same gusto. A friend recently saw her perform in Atlantic City with a World War II type review. Her good friend Jane Russell penned a foreword.

It's That Snootie Little Cutie.......2001-06-05
I am the author of Snootie Little Cutie. Connie Haines is the best singer of the big band era. At seventeen she sang shoulder -to -shoulder with Frank Sinatra first in Harry James' band, and then they both joined Tommy Dorsey singing with the Pied Pipers, Buddy Rich, Jo Stafford, all members of the great showcase band. Connie lives in Florida and still performs. Her friend Jane Russell wrote the foreword. This book will transform you back to the Big Band Era with over 100 photos. Connie later toured with Abbott & Costello on their radio show, and also toured with Jane Russell, Rhonda Fleming, & Beryl Davis as Les Girls, singing bible songs on a nationwide tour. "You will learn a lot about this honorable, faithful, fun-loving, talented, crystal- chanddelier-loving Southern Belle," according to Jane Russell.
