Book Description

The Words Don't Fit In My Mouth has become a classic book among fans of the new movement of poets around the world. The first release from author jessica Care moore, The Words Don't Fit In My Mouth is a thematically, multi-various collage of poems on love and lost, relationships, racism, sexism, and identity that says: "..we exist, yes we do. It's a fact." In the words of editor Tony Medina, this collection is full of tom-boy muscle and tender sister love caresses. She coos and curses and condems- all in one breath, all in one poem, one book.

Book Description

Even death could not stop Britain’s greatest defenders.

In 1838, William and Tamara Swift inherit a startling legacy from their dying grandfather, transforming them into the Protectors of Albion, mystical defenders of the soul of England. But the shocked, neophyte sorcerers also inherit unique allies in their battle against the dark forces. Fighting alongside them are the famous–even infamous–Ghosts of Albion: Lord Byron, Queen Bodicea, and Lord Admiral Nelson.

When strange and hideous creatures appear in the slums of London, an unholy plague threatens to launch an epic battle that may rage all the way to Buckingham Palace . . . and beyond. Time is running out as William and Tamara must learn whether their friends will stand beside them, or seduce and betray them.

From Amber Benson, known for her dramatic portrayal of Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Christopher Golden, Bram Stoker Award—winning author of The Shadow Saga and Wildwood Road, comes a vengeful tale of demons, vampires, and ghosts set in nineteenth-century London. Based on the smash BBC Web series that took England by storm, Ghosts of Albion is a horror adventure laced with dark humor and darker lusts.

Apparently a spin-off from a web project. This involves two young siblings you inherit the power to protect the soul of Britain from supernatural menaces, from their grandfather.

Their father is possessed by a demon, and they have to keep him bound. The ghosts of Boadicea, Lord Nelson and Lord Byron (poetry is useful in warfare?) help them, as does an old vampire friend of their father's.

They run into a girl who has usurped the power of the soul of India, and the Protector of India, plus a bunch of rakshasha and Children of Kali lizard-frog monsters.

They need a bit more ghostly help in the ifnal confrontation.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and Entertaining.......2007-03-20

Ever since I first discovered the original Ghosts of Albion production on BBC Online, I was hooked in by the dynamic duo of William and Tamara Swift, created by the equally dynamic duo of Christopher Golden and Amber Benson.

Accursed is a continuation of the original tale of a reluctant brother and enthusiastic sister who prematurely inherited their grandfather's magical birthright as the Protectors of Albion (England) from supernatural evils. Along with the spirts of Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson, Lord Byron, and Lady Bodicea, the two fought a great demon and now fight to free their father from the possession of another demon.

In Accursed, the two are back fighting more evil while trying to also balance their own lives. William is the straight man, more responsible and more reluctant to accept his role as a Protector, while Tamara is headstrong in an era where such an aspect in a woman was discouraged. The two manage to work together well, even with their frequent bickering as brother and sister butt heads.

Accursed is gripping and entertaining. It was difficult to put it down. Golden and Benson are an excellent team!

1 out of 5 stars Don't expect much!.......2006-07-25

This book is shockingly boring! Even worse is that I had to order it and wait for it. The setting is back when women wore very uncomfortable dresses, and marriages were arranged. The only bearable character in the book is the main one. She isn't a "typical" quiet girl, and their family has a secret history of a demon fighting order. Her brother and his fiancee are the most annoying and useless characters in the entire book. After reading the first Myth Hunters book, I noticed the authors tendency to use weak and spineless men as characters. Anyways, the story crawls along with old-fashioned drama that doesn't make sense and I never could stand to finish the book, although i did try. It drags on and on with no relief other than to close the cover. Mr. Golden should stick to modern settings that his writing excels in. I recommend the Buffy books instead. Maybe the Myth Hunters if you can ignore the old-fashioned tediousness and have an interest in gods, stories, and myths.

5 out of 5 stars Scary stuff, but well worth the read.......2006-04-02

Rarely have I read such a well-written, engrossing historical horror novel. Filled with fascinatingly memorable characters (some real, some imagined for the purposes of this series) and plausibly horrifying fantastic situations, Ghosts is the kind of book you won't be able to put down but might wish you had if only to avoid the nightmares it gives you. Golden and Benson are seamless co-authors; you are never quite sure who's writing what, much to their credit, because everything is of equal quality and weight.
Can't WAIT for subsequent books to come out!

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2006-01-11

Move over Buffy. Step aside Charmed. There are some new demon fighters on the block.

Brother and sister team, Tamara and William Swift, are kicking some major demon butt in the new series of books by Amber Benson and Christopher Golden. And unlike their 2lst century counterparts, they're doing it with style in 19th century England.

The Swifts have inherited a powerful legacy from their grandfather that transforms them into Protectors of Albion (the ancient name for England). Upon his deathbed he informs his grandchildren of the responsibility he is passing onto them. But before he can instruct them in the use of their new powers, he is killed.

Tamara and William are thrust into a world where demons are trying to take over and they, as the new Protectors of Albion, must defend England against otherworldly attacks. With the help of the vampire Nigel Townsend and a few ghostly allies, Tamara and William might just have a fighting chance.

The Ghosts of Albion: Accursed is the first published novel featuring the demon-fighting siblings Tamara and William Swift. However, their story began a couple years ago on the BBC cult website which combined flash animation, sound effects and music--not to mention the vocal talents of Anthony Daniels (Star Wars), Emma Samms (Dynasty), and Roy Skelton (Doctor Who).

The first animated audio adventure was followed by two short stories and another animated adventure. Familiarity with the past exploits of the Swifts and their friends is not essential to enjoying the book, but I wouldn't be surprised if people weren't flocking to the BBC website in order to get another fix, once they've finished with the book.

The Ghosts of Albion: Accursed is one of the freshest, most original takes on a tried-and-true idea. Certainly author Benson's past association with another demon slayer is an influence. What is different is the scale in how the story is told. Whereas Buffy had Sunnydale, the Swifts have the whole of Victorian London to live and fight their battles in.

And what a place Victorian London is. Beautifully described and containing believable and realistic characters, the place comes alive in the skilled hands of authors Golden and Benson. The dialogue is sharp and witty. You can truly hear and see the characters while you're reading it. This is one snappy and exciting adventure.

There are a few minor problems with the book. I felt that the character of Oblis (Tamara and William's demon-possessed father) was used as padding to the story. How he became possessed and the creepy nature of his possession was handled better in the BBC website outings. In the book he's depicted as a lecherous old man instead of an evil being capable of all sorts of atrocities.

There were also occasions when I felt the description of events were the author's desire to paint a realistic setting that actually impeded the action. And while I loved, absolutely loved the world they created, I felt that the story suffered from laboring too much on the William and Sophia love story and sudden changing character points of view at a climactic point in the narrative. These few items and the dreadful cover design (no offense to the beautiful Ms. Benson, but why is she prominently depicted on the cover when she isn't a character in the book?) were the only things I felt hindered the book as a whole.

Armchair Interviews says: The Ghosts of Albion: Accursed is a fast-paced and exciting novel. It is beautifully written with fresh dialogue, realistic and believable characters and almost poetic descriptions. Readers will be left wanting more adventures of the Swifts and their friends. Sci Fi fans should all be eager for the next installment.

3 out of 5 stars A parody of politics, even for those times..........2006-03-30

Heinlein actually ran for state office back in the forties. He was also involved with Upton Sinclair's run for governer. Later he was heavily involved with the Barry Goldwater campaign. All these campaigns failed, so it is no surprise that the advice offered in this book is trite and trivial, even for those times. Today it serves only as an historical relic, primarily for die-hard Heinlein fans. An example? Assemble a campaign committee which includes a person with an obviously Catholic name, a Protestent name, a Jewish name, etc. The Jew should be the treasurer. The Protestent should be the chairman. For those that catch on slowly, he even supplies sample names and titles. He writes this thing as a how-to book for a campaign manager. He paints the campaign manager as the real driver of the campaign even having him decide who to select as candidate. This really had me scratching my head. One would expect that even in those days the candidate selected the campaign manager. He also has the candidate taking orders from the manager as if the candidate is merely a stuffed shirt.
Another thing I thought was rather silly; early in the book, he says that he will not disclose his political leanings, as if to say he is writing the book without bias. What purpose does this serve? I mean we all know that he has a political preference. Why the mystery? I have read all of Heinlein's published material and consider him the greatest writer of science fiction for adolescent boys. Everything else he has written has suffered by comparison. If you see this in a bargain bin, go for it. Give the out of print 50 dollars a copy version a definite miss.

4 out of 5 stars 'How-To' for the Average Joe.......2006-01-28

Many have noted Heinlein's strong political statements that suffuse many of his books, from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress to Starship Troopers. Few, however, seem to note the knowledge of the political process that he displays in many of these works, or worse, think his portrayal of such processes is incorrect or not founded in reality. Here in this book of practical advice we can see from what point Heinlein got this knowledge, without much in the way of Heinlein's own political philosophy, though with some very strong opinions about various `types' of people who help shape the political process.

Heinlein was, at one point, associated with Sinclair Lewis and his EPIC (End Poverty in California) program, and ran for the California legislature in 1938 on the Democratic (!) ticket. He didn't win, but his experience from that time is the base material from which this book is derived. Written in 1946, just after the close of WWII, this book was part of several items he wrote at that time both as a method for breaking out of the `pulp' markets and because he felt that he could offer advice and warnings to America that were (in his mind) desperately needed. Most of the material from this period did not find a publishing market, and this work wasn't published until 1992, not because they were poorly written, but because there was little interest in such material then.

Heinlein looks at (American) politics from the most basic level, that of the individual voter. Grabbing this voter's attention and vote is the prime focus of this work. Chapters are spent on how to do door-to-door canvassing, setting up local meetings, organizing the associated office work, recruiting workers, funding, and most especially the reasons why you, as an individual, should not only get involved in this process, but what impact a single person can make. Some may object that this model of how to run an election campaign has been outmoded by today's technological communication methods, PACs, and national organizations directing even the smallest local elections, but a close look at the actions Heinlein is advocating will show that almost all of them are still applicable today, or would need only small modification to take advantage of today's technology. Viewed this way, the advice this book offers can be invaluable.

For the reader who has no intention of becoming politically active in the fashion of this book, though, this book still has something that makes it a worthwhile read: Heinlein's comments about various types of people (from senior citizens to the `reform' politician), the value of participation in the process in terms of maintaining a healthy government, the relative merits of different types of governments, `reactionary' groups (such as the American Communist Party), and the role women should play. This last item is definitely colored by the cultural attitude of the time this was written, that women are mainly only good as homemakers (though he does present at least one case of a woman working successfully at a high level in a political campaign).

The forward and various notes to this book by Jerry Pournelle need to taken with a grain of salt, as Jerry was definitely promoting his own agenda with these, but they do provide a more modern perspective from which to view this.

The language of this book is typical Heinlein, somewhat folksy, American colloquial, certainly a long way from all too many other books that deal with this area that have a somewhat strained academic approach and language. Overall, this is an easy read that will probably bring forth a few grins, perhaps a few violent disagreements with some of the expressed opinions, and a greater knowledge of just how the political process works.

4 out of 5 stars Controversial understates some of his statements.......2005-02-18

I have read much by and about Heinlein and knew that he had been involved in politics. However, before I encountered this book at a used book sale, I didn't know that he also wrote about grass roots politics. As a science fiction writer, Heinlein's works are generally considered on the right side of the political spectrum. Stories such as "Starship Troopers" glorify the military and he clearly advocates restricted government and individual responsibility. The attitude of many can be summed up by the comments of a fellow student when I was in college. When he saw me reading a Heinlein book he said that he did not did like Heinlein because of the "militaristic/fascist" tones.
Those tendencies, to the extent that they exist in other Heinlein writings, are not present in this book. It is as non-ideological a description of how to develop a political organization at the grass roots level that you will find. If a large group of people across the political spectrum were to read it, there is no question that there would be two levels of consensus. The first is that he knows how political organizations work and so it is a blueprint for success. However, the second would be a sense of outrage from many due to the way he portrays women in the body politic. He generally characterizes them as airheads, who vote the way their husbands tell them to.
Setting aside the weaknesses due to attitudes that are best left to history, Heinlein makes some controversial and politically incorrect statements. Sometimes they are clearly right, other times they would be debated. One of the most controversial would have to be the one on page 30, " American church groups as a whole are frequent sources of corruption and confusion in politics." Of equal power to generate controversy is the statement on page 40, "Clergyman, although usually worse than useless, make wonderful altruistic politicians when they happen to possess both love of humanity and hard-headed realism. Too often the ones that are bright aren't good and the ones that are good aren't bright. Catholic priests are usually both and you can work with them to limit the issues in which you both see eye to eye. If you happen to be Catholic yourself the problem is simple. The same can be said of rabbis, to a lesser extent." One can only speculate with a great deal of delight about what he would think about the involvement of evangelical Christians (non-Catholics) in recent presidential elections. (Note: Heinlein states that he was raised Methodist.)
Most of the book is devoted to basic things such as how to conduct yourself when conducting a door-to-door effort. Simple actions such as petting the family dog, being polite, asking to see a picture of the children, asking children their names and where they go to school are all the kind of things that will make someone favorably disposed to you, which by extension means your candidate. How to meet and greet people at the door when holding a meeting, collecting demographic information and techniques to help you "remember" information about an individual or his family. He states that he used to keep a box of note cards indexed by name by the phone so that when someone called him, he could stall for a few seconds while he accessed their card. He could then interject comments into the conversation that would make it appear that he remembered them in great detail.
I really don't know whether Heinlein's principles could win a modern election. So much has changed since 1946, which is the year Heinlein wrote the book. One thing I do know, if he were still around, his approach would grab a lot of press and would be very entertaining to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-02-06

Unlike most political books, which either place a huge reliance on your knowledge of current events/history, or go into such abstract concepts that leave the reader baffled, or are simply just too wordy, this book is for the layman: consise, easy to read, and rapid fire enough to be engaging. For the average joe who is up in arms over the election of ____ (fill in whichever politician you hate most), it offers an insightful view of what to do next. Too bad the price is so high, I think it should be out there for more people to have ready access to.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Heinlein Polemic.......2004-07-08

Book Review by C. Douglas Baker

Hardcore Heinlein fans will find Take Back Your Government to be an engaging monologue on democracy and American government. Take Back Your Government, as the title suggests, is a polemic, albeit a light-hearted one, about the importance of participation in a democratic system of government. Heinlein often states that if people do not participate in democracy, then they cannot complain about the corruption and malfeasance of their government. He strongly asserts that people participating in politics does matter. Heinlein's key message is that democracy can only survive if citizens participate and take responsibility for their government. He conveys substantial anecdotal evidence where one ordinary person or groups of people, participating in politics, made a difference. Without citizen participation, government becomes atrophied both morally and effectually.

Although written in 1947 and a bit out-of-date, one of the basic premises of the book, that local government matters and is the place to start if you are interested in politics, still holds true today. The book is filled with Heinlein's witticisms and conjectures about the democratic political process. One can find little fault with the facts and opinions Heinlein expresses vis a vis local politics at mid-century. Those familiar with academic literature on urban machines, the reform movement, and local politics will find Heinlein's analysis both accurate and humorous. The only time I found Heinlein's analysis to be questionable was in his too optimistic outlook for the possibility and efficacy of starting a third political party in the United States. History and precedent suggest that third parties are greatly disadvantaged in the American system of government for reasons too numerous to examine here. Probably the most enjoyable chapter is the second to last entitled "Footnotes on Democracy". Therein, Heinlein maintains that if the United State's did not have any Communists "we would almost be forced to create some". He goes on to aver:

"any social field or group in which Communists make real strides in gaining members or acceptance of their doctrines...is in bad shape from real and not imaginary social ills [and] the rest of us should take emergency, drastic action to investigate and correct the trouble. Unfortunately we are more prone to ignore the sick spot thus disclosed and content ourselves with calling out more cops (pages 223-224)."

Maybe Heinlein is not quite the authoritarian his detractors would have us believe.

Heinlein also has some interesting insights on the role of lawyers in politics that ring true today. Specifically, he notes about the creation of laws: "[lawyers] assert that their special language is necessary, as ordinary speech is not sufficiently exact...[yet] lawyers are forever disputing as to what a law means after they have written it" (page 225). These are just a few examples of Heinlein's clever analysis of American politics.

Take Back Your Government was published, I assume, mainly for fans of Robert A. Heinlein. I doubt non-Heinlein fans would find the book particularly interesting. The book, from an academic standpoint, is pedestrian and dated. Therefore, the audience most likely to enjoy this book are those who have some interest in Heinlein's works.

          Book Description

Many parents find it easier to talk to their children about sex and other intimate matters than to answer questions about God, prayer, good, and evil. In fact, parents may feel they don't know the answers to such questions for themselves, much less for their young children. In Teaching Your Children About God, Rabbi David Wolpe shows Jewish parents how to openly explore the idea of God with their children. Through poignant anecdotes and practical exercises, Wolpe teaches how parents can guide children in the practice of prayer and create an atmosphere in which children feel comfortable questioning and wondering about God, life, and death. Wolpe also offers invaluable insights into children's spiritual needs, reveals the powerful effect faith can have on a child's self-esteem, and enables parents to understand their children's fears, dreams, and hopes. Perhaps most important, this wise and potentially life-changing book shows parents who may feel something missing In their own spiritual lives that it is possible to nourish their own souls even as they nurture their children's.

I really enjoyed this book. David J. Wolpe is a wonderful Author. The first book I ever read of his was " In Speech and In Silence: The Jewish Quest for God" , it was a little difficult, because of the vocab, but it taught me a lot in my search of understanding faith in God from the Jewish point of view. "Teaching Your Children About God" is another masterpiece. This tells you in detail, from using the first angle of a childs imagination to teach them about the Lord, To common aspects of God we should teach our children such as Gods Love and Justice and Prayer. It also touches on the hard things in life such as death. Read this book even if you don't have kids it will give you a step by step approach to life and faith in God from aspects the we as adults every now and than need to revisit.

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful..........2007-02-22

I first became aware of Rabbi Wolpe through his television appearances. He is frequently a commentator on the programs "Ancient Almanac", "Mysteries of the Bible," and other religious programs produced for the Discovery and History Channels. I have always found him remarkably eloquent, insightful, and wise. I checked this book out of my local library after the birth of my first child. Although I am not Jewish, I cannot imagine finding a better resource for how to talk, one day, to my children about God. Beyond that, I found the book to be personally inspiring because, obviously, such a book causes one to reflect on one's own understanding of God, and mine was most definitely enriched. I am sure that I will re-read this book many times for my own personal reflection before I ever consult it for advice on how to answer my child's questions.

In terms of the "Modern Jewish Approach," rituals such as the Sabbath dinner, Passover, Yom Kippur, the bris, etc... are mentioned frequently; stories and anecdotes from the Talmud, Midrash and centuries of Jewish scholars and storytellers are generously sprinkled throughout the book, however there wasn't anything mentioned that I felt I "couldn't use" because I am not Jewish. In fact, I plan to look for more because I found the anecdotes and stories most helpful in explaining complicated, philosophical issues.

Among the issues discussed in the book are: Where does God come from? Did He write a book? Is He a She? Where to look for God? What does God want from us? Why are there different religions? Does God hear our prayers? Why does God permit evil? Why do we die? Is there a heaven and/or hell? Does God still talk to us? And many others I have not listed.

The book is delightfully readable and I would highly recommend it to anyone, parent or not, Jewish or not, who is looking to have their notion of God reinvigorated and challenged.

5 out of 5 stars Wolpe's approach may be Jewish, but you don't have to be!.......2000-12-06

The wisdom Wolpe offers in this gem of a book transcends Judaism, and really offers creative ways for parents of any religion to open their children's minds (and their own!) to the basic concepts of a loving God who created the world and cares about what we do and what happens to us. It also paves the way for exploration of difficult issues like suffering and unfairness in the world.

Wolpe never gets preachy; rather, he suggests ways to create shared moments with your child not just to teach but to validate his or her views on religion. A child who asks, "Why did God give Moses a speech impediment?" might not need an answer. He might be waiting to tell you, as Wolpe touchingly recounts, "So my sister wouldn't feel so bad" (because of HER speech impediment).

That's the kind of God Wolpe wants kids and adults to share -- a God who cares about us and our feelings, even little girls who stutter. His chapters are at once deeply philosophical and eminently practical. You can tell just by reading this book that Wolpe is a man who knows kids and knows God and sees how naturally the two go hand-in-hand.

Of course, because there's a child in each and every one of us, there is always the possibility that this book can help US re-establish connections to the divine that we haven't felt since childhood. And that, as they say in the credit card ads, is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible and inspiring........1997-06-17

This is a must read for anyone who has questions on how to interpret religion for children

5 out of 5 stars A bit of Southern Heaven.......2007-02-18

This lovely little book is the companion to "Treasured Recipes from the Charleston Cake Lady". I was so intrigued by my sucesses using her first book, that I decided to give this one a try. Good decision! Once again Teresa offers charming commentary on her beloved dessert recipes. I loved the German Chocolate Pound Cake that combines cake ingredients and icing together for a moist, rich, delicious, and easy to make unfrosted bundt cake. Her book also includes recipes for muffins, cookies and other desserts that I'm anxious to try. I recommend this charming book to anyone who loves baking or eating great desserts.

          1 out of 5 stars Recipe flops.......2005-07-31

I am an experienced baker and so I tried two recipes that are from scratch (no cake mixes.) Both of them (7-Up cake and Sumama's Buttermilk cake) flopped. Common problem was very dense, gummy texture even after cakes tested "done." Both cakes rose in the oven but then sunk after cooling. Seems to be not enough leavening in the recipes. I didn't try any of the recipes with cake mixes. I would recommend "Cake Mix Doctor" if you want cakes that start with a mix as its base. For cakes completely from scratch I'll stick with "The Cake Bible." They must not have very high standards in Charleston if bakeries can get away with using cake mixes for their "best-selling" recipes! Good thing my sister bought this book at a used book sale (obviously the original owner didn't think much of the book.) Just reading the amounts of sugar in the recipes was enough to make my teeth ache!

1 out of 5 stars Not exactly baking from scratch.......2004-03-23

Anyone considering buying this book should be aware that a large number of its recipes call for prepared items such as cake mixes, 7up, canned chocolate syrup, canned frosting, canned pineapple and mandarin oranges, candy bars, frozen whipped topping, pudding mix, and prepared graham cracker pie crust.

2 out of 5 stars not exactly from scratch..............2003-11-20

Serious bakers and anyone concerned about preservatives and artificial ingredients might be interested to know that many of the recipes in this book call for items such as:

          boxed cake mix
          packaged frosting
          canned chocolate syrup
          7UP
          brownie mix
          prepared pie crust
          pudding mix
          frozen whipped topping

I wish I'd carefully read the book description, which does mention that "some even use cake mixes as their starting point."

That said, there are some creative combinations and the author does seem like an awfully nice person. It's just not a book for everyone.

I am currently in Charleston and am stunned that not one person that I have asked all over town has ever heard of this dear lady! I just purchased her cookbook and intend to buy the other. She is a dieing breed. I went away to college 20 years ago and never moved back to the south until this year. Thanks to Mrs Pregnall (as she is my senior) I am looking forward to establishing my own group of fans for reproducing her fabulous looking, down-home, gentil and uniquely southern creations. If you are listening Mrs Pregnall, I am earnestly hoping to meet you while here and have you to personally autogragh my book. I am thankful that ladies like you are still around and that you will continue to encourage your craft, which I'm sure has very little to do with the actual ingredients that you put inside the cake....like mostly love. May the Lord bless you and keep you!

5 out of 5 stars Great Toothpick Book!!.......2007-01-10

I recently bought a 74 piece lot of toothpick holders at an estate sale. This book helped me identify several of them. The cross-referencing notes gave me a lot of info that I would not have had. I really enjoy this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2006-12-12

This book is a gold mine for collectors of old and reproduced American-made toothpick holders! Not only does it have excellent photos and/or drawings, it also gives a brief history of many glass makers in the late 1880s to the present time. Also lists original manufacturer, original colors, reproduced colors and the reproduction company. I've been able to verify and/or identify almost all of my thirty or so toothpick holder collection. Fabulous book, highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Pretty book, but not particularly useful.......2005-08-22

I bought this book because another reviewer said it had all the good pictures of the first edition plus more, and was a must have. (I should have put more stock in her "one star" rating than in her description!) Since I didn't have the first edition, it seemed to be a good bet. It IS a beautiful book! It pictures nearly every holder listed. Some of the pictures could be more clear, but overall, it is a good job. It lists the holders alphabetically by company. Listing by design characteristics would make it easier to find and identify holders. HOWEVER, the holders listed are nearly all late 19th to beginning of the 20th centuries. There is a VERY SMALL section on foreign and modern holders. This needs to be expanded greatly to be useful. I had an entire box full of holders, but could only identify two of them, and one of those was a modern reproduction for which the authors gave no values. So I still have no idea if it is worth anything. A 5-star book if you are looking for a nice coffee table book, but not of much help to the actual collector unless you know you only have 100-year-old holders.

1 out of 5 stars Glass Toothpick Holders Second Edition by Neila & Tom Bredehoft.......2005-08-14

This book has all the great toothpicks and pictures of the first
book. The pictures have been redone and are brighter and clearer.
Plus there are many new toothpicks and pictures for some that were just drawings in the first book. There is also a new contempory toothpick section and a section on foreign toothpicks.
I think the authors would have a grandslam if they would of expanded the section on newer reprodutions by the newer companies
and included information on how to rate the condition and how the condition affects value. Great must own for toothpick collectors.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource!!!.......2003-03-24

This is a wonderful book ... for collectors of toothpicks specifically, but also for anyone who collects and/or deals in early pattern glass. Beautiful photos, great historical info on the old glass companies, and reliable and well-organized presentation of all the information one generally seeks in a collectibles price/pattern identification guide.

I've often used this book to identify toothpicks, but also found it great for identifying other pattern glass pieces ... The photos really show off the pattern detail, and the (many!!!) accompanying line illustrations are extremely helpful, too. Also, since it's organized by company, if I know who made something but have no idea what it's called, this is the first book I reach for.

            Book Description

Written for architects, designers, and anyone involved in planning and designing assisted living facilities, The Essence of Home offers a fresh look at an area of design that is becoming increasingly important as the elderly population continues to grow exponentially. Through in-depth interviews with residents, staff, administrators, and family members, as well as an exhaustive review of architectural and medical literature, auther William Brummett has identified what it takes to make a facility feel like "home." It is not enough to merely add cosmetic or decorative touches to the typical hospital or nursing home structure; rather, the facility must be designed specifically with a sense of home in mind, taking into account not only the physical capabilities and limitations of the residents, but the emotional and psychological needs as well. The Essence of Home looks at 38 significant problem-solving design considerations, and contains two in-depth case studies. Detailed illustrations and graphics provide a visual sense of the concepts discussed in the text. An annotated bibliography and comprehensive list of references provide additional sources of information.

            5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-12-13

As someone who has built and manage an ALF and plan on expanding, this book is invaluable. It breaks down the art of architecture as it relates to senior housing and makes suggestions for certain elements that a non architect can easily achieve. A great "how to" book for someone who wants to build a facility. Also, after reading, I'm sure my knowledge base on the subject is better than the vast majority of architects.

              Book Description

This publication documents a project undertaken for the VII Bienal de la Habana in Cuba in November 2000. The artists created a photographic setting of an unreachable Austrian Alps landscape which they transported from their Brooklyn studios to Cuba where it was installed at"La Cabaña", a historical fortress dating back to the colonial period and which in later times was used for other purposes, such as the residence of Fulgencio Batista, a jail, and, after the 1959 revolution, the headquarters of the Comandancia, led by the Che Guevara. The alpine backdrop was set up with artificial snow, skis, sleds and all other accompanying decorative items that helped create the magical illusion. Cubans residents were then invited to come and take their picture in front of the backdrop and thus completing the work of art.

this book provides insights into the life of beautiful woman on the outside and a suffering one inside. it's interesting because many times one has a pre-conceived notion that models are a little hollow in the head. and their beauty is only physical. not true. the book delves into this woman's struggles in life, how she is treated by others and in the end where she is today and the lessons she's learned. definitely worth a read. it's a quick read.
