This is one of those books that would appeal to both teenagers and adults. Thumbelina has a silly name and long blonde hair. Her less-than-perfect mother dies unexpectedly, and after she goes to a foster home, she teams up with another sassy youngster, a girl named Myrna who has orange curls. Together, they try to make it out in the world. This is a sad novel that draws you in until the last page. Though the lack of quotation marks and the slow plot development make the novel a little clunky at times, Thumbelina and Myrna are such fascinating characters that it doesn't matter.
Incredibly powerful and beautifully written.......2002-08-18
This book is by for one of the most amazing novels I have ever read. It was very true-to-life, and the character was more realized and developed than I have seen in a long time. I found myself being drawn into a web of reality, and I felt like i knew the main character, Thumbelina, myself. It touched my soul so deeply that it will remain a part of me all my life. I have read this book too many times to count, and I recommend that you read it as well. It is one story that you will not soon forget.
A very touching story.......2001-07-15
I am taking a college fiction writing class this summer -- Andrea Koenig is my instructor. When she told us students that she had written a novel which had been published, I sought it out. I was not disappointed; this book is the first in a long time that I have read in one day! The title character, a fourteen-year-old girl who has been through much adversity, is wise beyond her years -- she has earned the right to every [smart] comment that pops forth from her six-foot body. It's heartbreaking to think of how believeable this character is! The complexity of Thumbelina's mother was the most compelling to me. The lack of quotation marks around dialogue made me a little dizzy at times, but otherwise, I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to future works from Ms. Koenig.
A Book For The Plane..........2001-02-13
I originaly bought this book to read on my four hour flight to Florida. I was browsing the bookstore looking for something interesting when the cover caught my attention. I bought it on a whim.
That night I decided to pick it up and read a little. I ended up reading most of the book! The story is told by Thumbelina, a 14-year-old orphan. After the death of her mother she is sent (with her Johnny Cash tapes) to live with a foster mother. This is where she meets the daringly indepenent Myrna. Myrna is also fourteen, and pregnant. It takes her no time in revealing that Thumbelina is pregnant as well. The girls become good friends, although they do have their catfights. They help eachother through good times and bad (mostly bad) and eventually brave enough heartache to last a lifetime.
The book was wonderfully written, although the lack of quotation marks can be confusing. All in all I think this is a wonderful book for a decent reader.

Gail Simone's Birds of Prey..........2007-08-06
... simply rocks.
Sensei and Student was the second major arc of Gail Simone's when she was writing Birds of Prey. Simply put, it is essentially everything good about comics. Great action, great pacing, great dialogue. it is all there. Not to mention that the series stars female characters... something you rarely see in comics, let alone done well. Gail makes her characters ones you can relate to, a hard task given the genre.
Birds of Prey at it's best.......2006-06-14
Lady Shiva, Cheshire, Huntress . . . guest stars galore in this collection. Lady Shiva is perhaps the most deadly martial artist in the DC universe and a well-known assassin. To make matters worse, Black Canary will have to team-up with her if she wants to find the answers she seeks!
And it bears mentioning that some of these guest stars become more than guest stars later down the road.
Did I mention the artwork by Ed Benes. It doesn't get much better than this.
Great Read.......2006-03-27
Sensi and Student was my first introduction into Birds of Prey. let me tell you, it has been a great series and a fantastic introduction to the characters.
This trade if filled with some fantastic character moments, action, thrills, and humor.
I could rehash the entire plot for you, but I think you've seen or read it before. I can tell you that I really enjoyed this trade, and it is a bright spot in my collection. I wasn't let down one bit by this series.
The only reason it doesn't get five stars, is I hoped the trade would offer more than the collection of comics. perhaps the writer and artists comments/sketches. Something more than the books recollected.
Birds rock!!!.......2006-01-19
I've just become a fan of the Birds two months back, but I really really admire the way Gail Simone writes the Birds. I just love the interactions between Dinah Lance and Barbara Gordon. Despite my note on the difference between the previous Huntress (e.g., the one I read in the Gods of Gotham story arc of Wonder Woman) and this Huntress in BoP, I still find that Birds of Prey really is the best heroine group of the DCU. Well, the only one, actually. Coz I don't count Wonder Woman and Catwoman as having a formal group affiliation with other female heroes, notwithstanding my love to both characters of Diana and Selina.
In this TPB, I was not only served with a great interaction between the three Birds, but also a rare treat of informal team of Black Canary and Lady Shiva, the world's most deadly assassin. As a fan of Wonder Woman, I was also very pleased to read the great interactions, albeit only 4-5 pages between Diana and Dinah while they were sparring at the JLA watchtower. Gail managed to catch the essence of Wonder Woman in such a short issue (i.e., Superman is the 'light' of human nature, Batman is the 'dark' side of human nature, while Diana encompasses both).
I was also excited to see Catwoman and Katana (and Gypsy) guest starring and helping Huntress and Black Canary to release Oracle from an 'illegal' prison. Again, Gail managed to grasp the essence of Catwoman in only several panels.
Way to go, Gail! Now, I have to save to buy some more BoP TPB...
Not the BEST Simone's work but EXTREMELY good.......2005-11-20
This trade paperback picks after Of Like Minds and is much better. Art is great like in OLM but story is MUCH denser. I guess I have soft spot for movies/books/comics that take reader to orient, but make no mistake, this is no Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee type of story. It looks like good old Master of Kung Fu in his best days combined with great oldies like Richard Chamberlain's Bourne's Identity. Anyway, villain Cheshire is everything but one dimensional and cast of characters is great.
PICK THIS UP! It can be compared to Morrison's X-men.
When is Marvel gonna publish Gail Simone's Deadpool and Agent X in one trade?

Martial arts mayhem (and some pretty great cheesecake art, too) is what you have here.
One of Black Canary's teachers, her sensei, has been killed. The same applies to Lady Shiva. Neither are big fans of the other, and Shiva has ulterior motives where the Canary is concerned.
They have to work out a truce so they can find out what happened. Crazy chases begin, drawing in many others. Top notch work.

I just finished this book and loved it! Set in a dark future. this first book is about a anomalous clone that is rescued from the megalex city by a tough chick named adama and brought to the rebel underground city. I won't ruin the the end for you but a battle insues between the industrial megalex city and the nature rebels of the prehistoric underground city. most excited I went back on Amazon to get The second book in english, but I only found it in german and french. I'll keep searching for it maybe it just hasn't come out in english yet.

A good reference.......2000-04-11
I bought this book a while ago, and have read it through a few times.It should--in my opinion--be put on every list of required reading for students of religious history. Bruce presents a well-written and insiteful commentary on the development of various religious sects through-out history, leading right up to present day.
The only two complaints I have about the book are -it was not longer, -the endnotes are at the end of each chapter, instead of collected at the end of the book. But that's just my personal preference.
On the whole, it was a good read and a good re-read (the true test of *any* book. I strongly recommend it.

The first time I heard of Biker Billy was on a Sunday morning on our local PBS, my husband and I watched his show. Biker Billy was in a dark basement (I think) and he was cooking. It was so strange, as usually, on cooking shows, you see these culinary experts, dressed in their culinary clothes in a well lit kitchen and cameras everywhere. This was totally the opposite. Biker Billy was wearing his trademark Biker Billy black T-shirt and dark sunglasses.
I was so surprised to find out that Biker Billy actually had a cookbook out. I bought it, when I was pregnant, more as a novelty, but opened it up and saw a very interesting person in Biker Billy.
His cookbook is vegetarian. So, if you are looking for meat, it's not here. Also, which I knew from the TV show, he uses a lot of hot peppers. AND, as his name implies, he loves to ride motorcycles.
I sampled a few of the recipes and definitely fell in love with this cookbook. My favorites are: "Kiss of the Devil Cocoa", "Hot Garbanzo Bean Patties" (AKA Falafel) and "Hot Hummus".
A great thing about this book is that he explains the peppers he is using, and how hot they are. He also lists some resources where you can purchase these peppers.
Another thing, he even talks about motorcycle safety, as motorcycle riding is one of his favorite past-times.
If you keep your eye open, you can even see him on other shows. I saw him once on Next Door With Katie Brown (it used to be on Lifetime TV). It was hysterical to see them together. She is so wide-eyed midwestern, cute and innocent, and here is Biker Billy tossing in all these peppers and she is looking shocked, but pleasantly!
Would I recommend this book? Sure! It's a great book!
A great entry into cooking with peppers.......2000-06-21
Cooking hot and spicy food is always a challenge; one man's endorphin rush is another man's journey into culinary hell.
Still, Biker Billy, no stranger to hot peppers of every variety and intensity, manages to create some of the most tasty--and mind you, HOT--dishes known to man. The best of them he's compiled into this book.
I've made several of the dishes in here (my personal favorite is Gingerbread Bikers from Hell), and the results, as seen on various friends and members of my family, are always mixed. The hotheads are always remarkably pleased; the rest will gamely take a taste and then stare at the rest of us like we have horns growing out of our heads.
If you've ever seen Biker Billy's show, you know he's a vegetarian; an OVERWEIGHT vegetarian. This is sort of hard to do, but you'll notice that while Mr. Hufnagle eschews meat, he's not shy about using cow by-products like cheese and butter. (In spicy cooking, except for Asian food, dairy is almost required; it tends to lessen the fire in peppers, and when you're dealing with habaneros and the like, dairy is a MUST. Asian cooking is another story.) That said, as long as you're not cooking with fire every day of the week, this book will provide you with some fantastic meat-free meals that will surprise you with all the flavors that the peppers help to bring out.
Biker Billy makes preparation a breeze with easy-to-understand directions, and the fun-to-read filler around the recipes proves Mr. Hufnagle to be a fine author, too. So order this book now, and the next time some unwanted visiting relative expects you to serve him blueberry pancakes, you can put a little surprise in there for him!
Now, can somebody get this guy a show on the Food Network, please?
Possibly the best cookbook of the many I own.......1999-08-13
When I first saw this book in a store, I thought it was a grill cookbook. I read the back, saw that it was devoted to hot n' spicy cooking, and bought it on a whim. I found it to be perhaps the best cookbook I own. I usually feel that a meal isn't complete without meat, but these recipes are so flavorful and interesting that I don't miss it. The recipes range from simple to exotic and all are, in my experience, exceptional. I have recommended this book to many friends, most of whom have bought more copies to give to friends. I wholeheartedly recommend Kiss of the Devil Hot Cocoa, Blueberry Pancakes from Hell, Black Bean Burritos, and Hot Potato Corn Chowder. Trust me, they're all unique and exceptional. Thanks, Mr. Hufnagle, for sharing these recipes! Hope for a follow-up soon! ALLRIGHT!!!

Beautiful photos, but *NOT* a sourcebook.......2002-03-12
This book is filled with gorgeous photos of exquisite dollhouse rooms. However, I would hardly call it a sourcebook, since it doesn't mention the sources for any of the items or materials. Had it contained directions for making the projects, and/or information on where to buy them, I would have loved it. Instead, I'll use the photos for inspiration -- but certainly not as a sourcebook, since no sources are mentioned.

If you are looking for inspriation, this is a wonderful book. There are many full page photos, all in color, of some of the finest miniatures ever produced. The chapters start with the house itself, then examines each major room found in most houses. This is a must-have coffee table book for all miniaturists.

This is an above-average quality show-biz biography which will win no prizes for writing quality, originality of research, or psychological insight. On the other hand, it's not half bad and Demi fanatics will welcome it as one of the very few, perhaps the only, book length account of her life and career. Now, I could complain that the pictures aren't big enough, and that none (save the cover) are in color. But I won't. I really enjoyed reading this, in fact gobbled it up over two weeknights. All Demi lovers should have a copy.
