As one of the prose poems in here has it--Judith W. Steinbergh's wonderfully yeasty "May Day"--this is both "hot and earthy stew, epicurean soufflé" Touching Fire is a collection of verse and story from authors as diverse as Deena Metzger,Margaret Atwood,Tess Gallagher, Zora Neale Hurston, and more. The introduction takes great pains to insist that this collection is erotic, not pornographic, a distinction that has grown fuzzier over time. The book would still be banned in plenty of places; yet in its joy and celebration, it belongs in a picnic hamper when heading out for the trees with the one you love.

Book Description

This highly regarded collection of prose and poetry on the nature of the erotic features work by Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Adrienne Rich, and more than fifty other contemporary female authors.

4 out of 5 stars I wish someone could confirm!.......2005-09-15

I think I bought this book (like the above reviewer) in high school. Then over the years, I lent it out and it's gone. But I believe there to haave been one poem in it entitled "I am horny". Is this the same book? The TOC information is not here. If it is, than this not-well-known poem expresses a feeling that I honestly don't think I've ever seen in print before. Brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars A decent erotica collection.......2003-11-03

On one of those nights as a broke high school senior, I found this book in the nearby bookstore where my friend and I were hanging out for the evening. I think I read most of the book standing by the shelf where I had found it, and even though I didn't have much more money than that, I shelled out the bucks for this book. It was very eye-opening for me... if you think you have a bit of the erotic adventurer in you but are new to erotic writings, you might consider giving this one a try. It runs the range of different scenarios, and there is poetry as well as prose, which sets this collection apart from many other erotic collections of recent years. Give it a try, and see what you think!

        Book Description

This is a truly magical tale, full of strangeness, terrors and wonders. Many girls daydream that they are really a princess adopted by commoners. In the case of teenager Miranda Popescu, this is literally true. Because she is at the fulcrum of a deadly political battle between conjurers in an alternate world where "Roumania" is a leading European power, Miranda was hidden by her aunt in our world, where she was adopted and raised in a quiet Massachusetts college town. The narrative is split between our world and the people in Roumania working to protect or to capture Miranda: her Aunt Aegypta Schenck versus the mad Baroness Ceaucescu in Bucharest, and the sinister alchemist, the Elector of Ratisbon, who holds her true mother prisoner in Germany. This is the story of how Miranda -- with her two best friends, Peter and Andromeda -- is brought back to her home reality. Each of them is changed in the process and all will have much to learn about their true identities and the strange world they find themselves in.This story is a triumph of contemporary fantasy.

3 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it, but just couldn't.......2007-08-07

I had read so many glowing reviews of this book, and it seemed like something that would be perfectly suited to me based on these reviews. I was sure that I would just love it. Perhaps my expectations were too high and perhaps if I had just stumbled upon it by accident my experience with it would be different. But, as it is, I just couldn't really get into the book. And I just don't understand the uber-hype that it's received. Park didn't manage to engage me on the level of the writing, the plot, or the characters-- all were okay, but a little dull. Frankly, I was a little bored. I wish this review could be more helpful-- if I could get a better sense of what went wrong here. But in the end it was just a failure to connect that I don't entirely know the source of.

1 out of 5 stars Who "seizes" a towel? Honestly!.......2007-04-02

It is very difficult for me to criticize books in general. I believe in giving all books a chance. I had just finished reading "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" and I was trying to fill the void that cripples an enthusiastic after turning that final, fantastic page. After serveral different searches, I came upon this title and read many reviews. I also read the first five pages of the book, which weren't atrocious, but also weren't extraordinary. I was on the fence about it until I read the glowing comments that Ursula LeGuin had made about Park's novel. Also, there were so many customers who seemed to honestly enjoy it! Rarely do I allow the editor within me ruin my experience of a book, but "Princess of Roumania" is certainly an exception. For the freaking life of me, I could not disregard the dreadful grammatical errors, the contrived and awkward vocabulary, and the uninspired plot. There is a thick wall built around each character, so thick that I didn't even care about their respective fates. It's a shame, because at first it seemed to have some potential. Once I read the sentence "...She seized the towel..." somewhere in the middle of the book, I slammed the book shut with disgust and vowed never to open it again. I have never read anything so poorly written! It is trite, it's been done and done much better by other authors. This was my first stab at one of Park's books. I won't be enthusiastic about reading another one of his novels. I strongly advise customers (especially fans of high quality fantasy) to avoid this book like the plague. There are too many books in this world to wast time reading a bad one. Some books in the fantasy genre that are much better are: "A College of Magics" by Stevermer, "Sorcery & Cecelia" by Wrede and Stevermer, "Freedom & Necessity" by Brust & Bull, "Jonathan Strange..." which I mentioned above...The list goes on and on, but sadly this book cannot be included. I hope this was helpful and saved you some time, spared you from frustration and wasting a little bit of money.

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad, Really Middle of the Road.......2006-12-13

I'm not a huge fantasy reader, although I have enjoyed novels that involve magick in stories set in the "real world." If you're reading this and want to know if my tastes will line up with yours, I read and enjoyed Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon books, as well as her Witch Hill type books, but never got into Darkover. Beware, too, that this novel is the first in a trilogy, or at least I hope it stops there, and each novel stops without any sense of resolution at the point where the next novel will begin. The third novel, White Tyger is expected out in late January.

I think that the author, Paul Parks, has a lot of potential, but could really benefit from a writing coach. There's a lot of wonderfully visual writing that paints vivid pictures, and makes the characters come to life. Unfortunately, Parks tries to relate the speech patters of Romanians who speak English as a second language, and doesn't do a great job here. I don't speak Romanian, or know any native speakers off the top of my head, but I speak 4 romance languages, and know linguistics. Dialectic writing is tough, and should be dropped if an author can't do it well; like seasoning food. . .know what you are doing or ere on the side of caution. At times, Parks' attempts are OK, at other times it really interferes with the flow of a sequence, and at other times Parks forgets that a character should be speaking with an accent. If found myself having to reread pages here and there, because details got lost in the attempt at realistically accented speech.

Sometimes this book is very engaging, with a good story concept. Unfortunately, Parks takes so long to get where he's going, without enough story development in the process, which I find myself wishing that he'd just hurry up; and I'm not one of those that reads the last chapter to find out what happens before I get to it. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint, the books are just engaging enough and well written enough to get me to finish the series. Although, if there's a 4th novel, I may not finish the series.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing and original opening to a new fantasy series.......2006-09-25

Paul Park's A Princess of Roumania is the beginning of an ongoing fantasy series. On the whole I would say it has more commercial potential than his previous books. But in so saying I do not mean to say it is less ambitious than his earlier works, or less imaginative -- indeed, it is a very fine novel, and promises to open a fascinating series.

Miranda Popescu is a 15 year old girl in a college town in upstate New York in about the present day. She was adopted from Romania in the chaos following the uprising against Ceausescu. As the novel opens she befriends a lonely one-armed boy, Peter Gross. Her other special friend is a popular girl named Andromeda. Soon they meet a sinister group of teenagers who have just moved to their town, and suddenly their school is set afire, risking Miranda's special keepsakes from Romania: some coins and jewelry, and in particular a remarkable book called The Essential History, which describes world history from an unusual viewpoint.

In a completely different world we meet the Baroness Nicola Ceausescu, formerly a prostitute then a successful actress and dancer, who became the second wife of a much older man. This man was involved in an intrigue which led to the execution of Miranda's father, the exile of her mother to Germany, and the financial ruin of her Aunt, Princess Aegypta Schenk von Schenk, half-German and half a descendant of the White Tyger, Miranda Brancoveanu, who saved Roumania centuries before. It seems to be Aegypta's hope that Miranda Popescu is the new White Tyger, who will save Roumania from her corrupt current Empress, and from the threat of German invasion. Both Aegypta and Nicola are sorceresses, and Aegypta, we soon gather, has created an artificial world, our world, in which she has hidden Miranda, as well as two loyal retainers, who have been incarnated as Peter and Andromeda. Nicola has managed to send some people to that world, to find Miranda and bring her back -- both realize that if she is the new White Tyger, control of this teenager will be critical. Nicola, furthermore, is intriguing with a German envoy, thus betraying both her nominal political ally, the Empress, and of course her longtime enemy, the Princess Aegypta.

Nicola's schemes succeed in a limited manner, and Miranda, Peter, and Andromeda all end up in the "real world": our world, and its creating book, having been destroyed. (Apparently.) But they are marooned in the wilds of America, inhabited mainly by savage refugees from earthquake-shattered England. Nicola, however, loses control of her plans, and is forced to turn against her erstwhile German friends, though she does come into possession of a powerful gem, Kepler's Eye. She finds herself accused of a murder she didn't commit, while racked with guilt over a murder she did commit. Miranda, in dream contact with Aegypta, a woman she doesn't know, struggles to make her way with Peter, Andromeda, and an obsessed tool of Nicola's, Major Raevsky, to Albany and eventually to a ship to Roumania. Or, she hopes, perhaps back to "our" world. The German Elector of Ratisbon, an illegal sorcerer himself, is trying to find Miranda, and also Kepler's Eye.

It's a thoroughly interesting novel. In particular, the characters of the villains are wonderfully realized, especially Nicola Ceausescu, who is a certainly a bad person, but at the same time a person with whom we sympathize: and someone who is sometimes on the "right" side. The magical parts are very original, believable (in context), and impressive. There is no real resolution -- this is after all the first of a series. But I'll be eagerly reading on.

4 out of 5 stars An Acquired Taste.......2006-09-14

I found this book to be an acquired taste. As it happens, I acquired the taste in the course of reading it.

At first I didn't think I'd make it through the book. Like many books that are highly praised by our literary betters, it started out quite heavy on "woe is me", introspective dialogue, and pretty light on anything of interest actually happening. (I should note that, at my advanced age, I only read for entertainment or education. I've had enough of narcisistic existentialism, which, although an apparent necessity for critical approval, really should be of no interest to anyone above the age of 30.)

But to continue ... the writing is professionally easy to parse so, not being forced to put it down by bad writing, I continued to glide through it, and found that as the plot started developing, the moaning became less frequent. New, and interesting characters were introduced and the plot itself became extraordinarily unpredictable.

Nothing happens that could be remotely predicted. Surprise follows surprise and yet at every turn I would feel that the author actually made a brave and useful move. The author never took an easy path ... all the paths taken were difficult, resulting in small wrapups of the loose threads but wide openings in the future possibilities.

And, to reiterate, it is "smoothly" written and not difficult to put up with, even when the protagonists spend a few too many paragraphs worrying about their inner turmoil.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Resource for Science Fiction Writers.......2005-08-10

I am just starting out writing science fiction, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in writing in the genre. It is not a "how to write science fiction", but rather a handy reference book. It the various areas of science that a science fiction writer might find useful, with chapters devoted, inter alia, to: space and spaceships, planets and planet design, aliens, designing a future setting, nanotechnology, intelligent machines, bioengineering, and alternate universes.

I found the book to be well-organised and easy to read. All sections are written in a clear, easy to understand manner, assisting the non-scientist layman in writing convincing science fiction. One of the best features, in my view, was that the authors point out all the "wrong science" blunders common to science fiction, thereby helping you to avoid them. They also point out examples of excellent science fiction and how those authors used known science in a convincing manner.

The only significant shortcomings of this book relate to its age: it was printed in 1993 so the science risks becoming dated as we move further from its publication. Additionally, this means that it has gone out of print and one can only obtain used copies. However, there is nothing newer out there that covers all the areas that The Writer's Guide to Creating a Science Fiction Universe so it is still well worth it.

I have also read the Science Fiction Writing Series (edited by Ben Bova) "World Building" and "Space Travel" and I preferred The Writer's Guide to Creating a Science Fiction Universe. There is nothing wrong with the Bova books, they were excellent as well, but I found Messrs. Ochoa and Osier's book easier to read and more insightful. Plus, it is nice having everything in one place. On the other hand, the Science Fiction Writing Series books are more comprehensive and still in print.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book for sf writers.......2002-02-02

Though I read this straight through, this is really more of a reference book. It covers chapter-by-chapter the various areas of science that a science fiction writer might find useful, starting (not surprisingly) with space and spaceships. Other topics include designing a planet, aliens, designing a future, nanotech, intelligent machines, and alternate universes. The authors do a good job of pointing up common cases of bad science, from lasers visible in space to human-alien halfbreeds and other Star Trek-type errors. They also point up shining examples of science fiction stories that are based on particular concepts and make suggestions based on other ideas that haven't been fully mined yet.

                Definitely a worthwhile book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2001-12-27

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is starting out writing science fiction. It is very easy to read and understand, and it discusses topics frequently found in science fiction. Not only does it have information about world-building, but it also covers topics like aliens, space travel, and futuristic civilizations. If you're just starting out, or if you just need some guidelines in your fiction, check this book out.

5 out of 5 stars For a better understanding of science fiction.......1998-05-26

This is a great book for those interested in Science Fiction. It helps the laymen understand scientific concepts and is written in a way that is easy to understand. We often see scientific books as being hard to understand, being too mathematical and way above our heads. This book is definitely not that way. If you want to learn about science, this is the book. There is a section on creating an alien life bearing planet, detail by detail. A section on spaceships and space stations, and a section on designing a future. There is even a section on remodeling humans. All this in an understandable format. Writers will find it of unmeasurable help in their writing science fiction.

                  Book Description

In this pioneering work of discourse analysis, Tomoko Masuzawa observes that the modern study of religion is peculiarly ambivalent toward the question of origin. Today's historians of religion maintain that they have abandoned speculative quests for the origin of religion; at the same time, they allege that concepts of absolute beginnings are fundamental to religion itself. By renouncing the desire for origins that they claim religious peoples embrace, historians can vicariously participate in the forbidden quest—so it seems—without forfeiting the authority accruing from their objectivist position.

This ambivalence of contemporary scholars echoes their ambivalence toward the ancestral "giants" of the discipline: Durkheim, Müller, and Freud. Masuzawa shows that the speculations of these three men on the origins of religion render the very notion of time and history problematic and contain powerful instruments for dislodging the position of "Western man" as the keeper of knowledge. Her critical rereading of these forefathers is framed by a compelling discussion of the postmodernist subversion of absolute origins in the works of Walter Benjamin and Rosalind Krauss and a comparison of Mircea Eliade and Nancy Munn's accounts of the Australian aboriginal "dreamtime." Engaging a number of critical issues within the burgeoning field of cultural studies, Masuzawa's book will have far-reaching implications not only for religious studies but throughout the human sciences.

What I like to do is to take the book out of the library first, glance over and try a recipe. I tried Black & Tan cake on page 82-83 for a Christmas Party last week. What a show stopper! Sweet Maria's made me look really good. I have put this book on my Christmas list. Hope Santa is checking my list twice.

"Sweet Maria's Cake Kitchen" by Maria Bruscino Sanchez published by St. Martin's Grifiin Maria Bruscino Sanchez has made her name known in Connecticut, thanks to her baking efforts at Sweet Maria's Bakery as well as winning the Grand Prize at the Connecticut Bakers Association Cake Decorating Contest two years in a row. In "Sweet Maria's Cake Kitchen," her second dessert book, Sanchez spills some of the secrets that she has developed over the years. Like many cookbooks, "SMCK" begins with the basics and then uses them as building blocks or layers to create delicious layer, loaf and bundt cakes. For veteran home chefs who are comfortable at the controls of their Kitchen Aide, you'll find intriguing combinations of flavors and ingredients in her 65 recipes while amateurs can accept the hand-holding directions that take you from the first mixing to the final baking. If you're tired of plain old chocolate cake, white cake or yellow cake, flip through the 129 pages here and update your repertoire with the likes of the Elvis cake, the Tiramisu cake and the toasted lemon snowball cake. Your taste buds will thank you. By Mark C. Guncheon

This was my first book that got me started with fast food toy collecting. Its got hundreds of full-color pictures of many of the entire series of fast food collectibles from all the major restaurants, as well as plush toys, a foreign toy section, and index. It comes complete with price ranges, manufacturer markings, restaurant, name, and year (from the late 70s to some of 1996) as well as a spot to annotate the toys you own. This book is a must for any collector! John Gaska, Prattville AL.

Based on the authors' "Stick Making: A Complete Course." Andrew Jones and Clive George, devote the first chapter of this book going over finding, cutting, seasoning sticks, what types of wood is used, as well as the tools used. They go through everything not only in text but they provide pictures as well.

After the introduction the authors jump you straight into the techniques used in strengthening your sticks to be used in building your projects. The projects outlined range from thumbsticks, walking sticks, wooden crooks, market sticks and much more.

This book shows you how to make specialty head for your canes as well. Providing detailed instruction on a dog's, duck's or a pheasant's head. They

My favorite aspects of this book are the authors' use of providing a lot of diagrams and pictures to help spotlight the amount of detail they write. Also, each project has detailed descriptions of what material is needed and how to shape everything from the wood for the shaft to using bones and horns for the handle. There's no more guesswork on what tool is used to make or do what!

This book is very thought out and it is geared toward the more experienced woodworker. I enjoyed this book and look forward trying my hand at building one. Over all I recommend the purchase of this book.

Devotees of romantic Victoriana are generally devoted as well to Victoria magazine, turning to it regularly for decorating, entertaining, and style ideas. Christmas with Victoria collects the year's best, centered on the holiday theme.

Gorgeous photographs proclaim, in the words of editor-in-chief Peggy Kennedy, "the many moods of Christmas: nostalgic, pastoral, elegant, or ... pretty." In trademark Victoria style, the expected touches all make their appearance; the ornaments, trimmings, displays, and table settings all feature such elements as yards of pastel ribbons, lots of lacy flourishes, arrays of antique crockery and vintage flatware, the patina of the weathered farmhouse, the gleam of silver candlesticks.

An extensive food section (comprising about half the book) supplies tempting recipes for an afternoon open house, a full-fledged winter feast, and a multitude of baked-goods gifts. There's really not much substance to the project component--a few ornaments and stockings, some sachets and garlands, and the like--but everything, as Peggy Kennedy declares, is very pretty. --Amy Handy

Although I have seen a few of the Victoria books, I must say that this issue was mildly disappointing in compared with previous editions. I really think volume 3 was by far the best of the bunch.

Overall, this books gives good ideas about decorating and cooking for Christmas. A good resource for those who like to make their own ornaments and home decorations.

I loved this book. The recipes are terrific, the ideas are helpful, and the photos are so pretty the season's special mood comes alive. Even in August it made me feel the spirit of Christmas, and on a sunny summer day, that's saying something!

If you are looking for a book that teaches you about how the Victorian's spent Christmas, this is not it (go for "Victorian Christmas" by Kalman and Bedell). If you are looking for a book of beautiful pictures, with minimal decorating, plus gift and recipe selections a la Martha, this is for you. I was disappointed.

This small format version of a milestone book is an astonishingly detailed chronology of gigs, venues, quotes and memorable dates relating to The Beatles. Uncovering the quarrels, the sex and the drugs as well as the personal triumphs, The Beatles Diary is simply the most revealing personal history of The Beatles ever published. Features hundreds of photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful if not some same old same old..........1999-11-28

I found this book to be a great source of quotes concerning the Beatles, although much of the information was a little old but that's got to be there since it's a chronological account, and of course much would seem same old same old because i have read so incredibly much on some of my favorite people...i would definitely recommend this book for an aspiring fan or the die-hard like myself. Enjoy!

                                              2 out of 5 stars "Diary": Another re-write of Mark Lewisohn's research.......1999-03-25

Miles joins the ranks of such copy-cat authors as Mark Hertsgaard with his "Diary". This book is far from being "an astonishingly detailed chronology of gigs, venues, quotes, and memorable facts about the world's most famous band". Miles has simply taken the contents of Mark Lewisohn's extensively researched "Chronicle" and added pictures.

Aside from being a great-looking "coffee table" book, it is hardly worth the price. The book contains no great revelations, nor does it have any details that have not been covered ad nauseum in the any of the hundreds of books already written about the Beatles.

If you can live without the big pictures, I strongly suggest locating a copy of any of Lewisohn's books.

This book covers most everything that happened to the Beatles and even has quotes. The book has many pictures of the Fab Four that I had never seen before. I enjoyed the way the book was set up. No matter if you are a hardcore Beatles Freak or a first time listener you can still enjoy the book.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Beatle fans!!.......1999-01-18

This book was worth it's price because the author included a photo that I have never seen in any Beatle's related publication. The photo shows John Lennon and George Harrison leaving a home with what appears to be Elvis Presly standing at the doorway. The Beatles met Elvis at his home in Los angeles in 1965 and the author placed this photo alongside his description of this event. Unfortunately there is no caption alongside the photo. This was their only encounter and no photographs were taken of this historic meeting. The author did not elaborate on this photo and appears to have left it to the imagination of the reader. It would be great if the author cleared this matter up.

This book was published in 2001, so the 29th of November of that year is not covered. I can understand why the former Beatles must be annoyed that their separate lives are constantly compiled together, but as they have probably figured out by now, Beatledom doesn't end so easily. And undoubtedly they were interested in what each other was putting out for competitive reasons, so there is some logic in writing about them collectively. This book is a pretty exhaustive chronicle of the former Fab's tours, recording sessions, lawsuits and public spats. It gives date-by-date accounts of what these four men, their wives, friends, family and business associates were doing from 1970 to 2001. There are some odd entries, such as one for 1983 which claims that Paul's single "So Bad" went to number one in 1983. Other sources have it as a b-side of "Pipes of Peace," stalling outside of the top twenty, which is probably more accurate since if it did top the charts, it would have appeared on Paul's various "best-of" collections. Anyway it is a bit much to expect 100% accuracy for a text covering so much time and so many lives. This is a great reference work for anyone interested in what happened after 1969. Be prepared for four grown men engaging in a lot of mutual bickering and snide comments.

I would recommend this book to everyone.
It all started when Hattie's Uncle fell off the roof and died. When his coffen was in the wagon, it fell off into the river. Pa jumped in and tried to save it, but a steamboat came and sucked the coffin under. The captin of the steam boat felt sorry, so he said he would give Pa and the family a free ride anywhere. Pa gathered up all their belongings and headed to Oregan. Hattie and her family went through so much when traveling to oregan. Her friends died, oxen and mules died. Mrs. Kenker stole when folks weren't looking. Mrs. Biggs drowns; Mr. Kenker killed himself by jumping into the river; some boys died of poiesining, etc. In the latter part of the journey all their oxen died, therefore they had to leave all the belongings and walk the rest of the way.

This book is okay - not good, and definately not perfect. Hattie is SUCH a stereotype of "headstrong, unladylike, has a well-behaved best friend" that I've seen way too many times. The action is not as good as in the Oregon Trail game, and Hattie's family is pretty stereotypical too. Still read, it's not truly terrible...

A quick read left me loving Hattie Campbell and her compelling story. It made me fully understand the hardships, heart aches, joys and successes of the Campbell family's journey. Loved it!

I am a 6th grader from Cornwall New York. The book I read was Across the Wide and Lonesome Prarie by Kristina Gregory. This book is mainly about a girl named Hattie Campbell starting a new life in Oregon recording everything that happens. During the book Hattie goes through major struggles to get to Oregon. Some struggles Hattie goes through is going through huge dry deserts and long fierce rivers. During these journeys Hattie's friends and family pass away. For Hattie and many others this is very emotional. The whole book they are going through diffrent challenges. One of my favorite parts is when they go through the biggest rivers during a storm and the indians chasing them.I think many people would enjoy the part when they travel through the mountains. This story never stops with the action. The problems just keeps on a going and going. I think anyone who reads this book will love it. I would definetly recomend this book to anyone. If you are looking for a great book I suggest you read this amazing book. If you feel this book does not fit your style than try one of the other Dear America books in the collection.

Cornwall, New York, 6th grader. The book Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie was about a girl named Hattie leaving Missouri to start a new life in Oregon with her family. During this journey Hattie goes through many struggles. I thought this was a good book because they were always having a new adventure. During the book they also had to cross rivers go and through dry deserts. I would recommend this book to someone that likes adventure. One of my favorite parts was when they had to go through the first river. Overall this was a good book.

                                                  Book Description

This volume in the John Muir Library Series chronicles the famed naturalist's walk shortly after the Civil War from Louisville, Kentucky, to Florida and is one of his best-loved books. Originally published in 1916, it is largely comprised of diary entries Muir made during his memorable 1867 trek.
This was a pivotal time in Muir's life, when an eye injury that caused temporary blindness forced him to leave his manufacturing job in Indiana and reevaluate the direction of his life. As his sight returned, Muir realized how much he regretted abandoning his true love, botany, and determined to make his now-celebrated thousand-mile "floral pilgrimage."
Lyrical chapters celebrate Kentucky's forests and caves, crossing the Cumberland Mountains, traversing the river country of Georgia, crossing Florida swamps and forest, and sojourning at Cedar Keys. These timeless observations of the natural world mingle with a vivid look at the post-Civil War South, encounters with colorful or desperate characters, and an archetypal portrait of a young man in search of himself.
The book includes an account of Muir's journey from Florida by way of Cuba and Panama to San Francisco. The narrative reaches its conclusion with an account of his first walk to Yosemite and his stay in nearby Twenty Hill Hollow that signaled the start of his budding career as a young conservationist.

5 out of 5 stars A perilous journey to discover the natural world.......2007-06-03

After an accident in a carriage factory while working as an inventor left him temporarily blinded, John Muir vowed that he would break the moorings of life in Indianapolis and embark for wilderness places to study plants. His intention, which he later acknowledged as foolhardy, was to find his way to a tributary of the Amazon and float down that great river. He never made it to South America. He was lucky enough to survive a bout with malaria and be diverted to California.

It's hard to imagine a much more dangerous undertaking than to set off alone soon after the Civli War to places unknown in the heart of the South. He was warned repeatedly by kind strangers and knew quite clearly of the dangers ahead: the guerilla bands of roving white bandits, displaced and desperate former slaves, a migration of rattlesnakes, the alligator-infested swamps, and the worst of all: catching malaria from mosquito bites (the thing that did catch up to him). It shows how single minded he was in his desire to study and learn about the natural world. As the blacksmith who took him in along the way characterized him: what a tough-minded man he needed to be in order to subordinate the dangers to what he wanted to do.

Some do get rather tired of reading Muir's descriptive passages, but for anyone with a love of plants, this book offers a very unique and special view of the native vegetation along the route that he took to Florida. The cultural observations are less common, but they are keen and say a lot about the times: the people and how simply they lived. Then, there are some amazing experiences such as the time he spent in the natural refuge of the St Bonaventure graveyard in Savannah waiting for a parcel from his brother to arrive. There's a prophecy by a friend along the way about the coming prevalence of electricity long before the light bulb was invented. And, there are Muir's observations that plants do have secret lives, unknown to man, who tends to blow himself up out of all proportion to the rest of Creation.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars Natures bounty in a war-torn land.......2007-05-22

John Muir (naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club) left his home in Indiana at age 29 and "rambled" 1,000 miles through the woods of the southern US ending in Florida in 1867/68. It was just 2 years after the end of the Civil War and he ran into "wild negros" and long-haired horse-riding ex-Confederate bandits who would "kill a man for $5". He passed through uninhabited stretches of burnt out fields and deserted farms and was often seen as a northern interluder mistrusted by his southern guests. He lived mostly on stale pieces of bread, almost dieing of starvation while camping in a graveyard outside of Savannah, GA. He caught malaria and was bed ridden for 3 months, cared for by a kind family in Florida.

This is a snapshot of the south right after the war and the contrast between Muir's beautiful nature writing and the devastation of war are just as striking today as they must have been for the many people who encountered this unusual walker in the woods. Muir's writing is under-stated - the book was published posthumously and is more a diary than a finished book, which gives it a truthfulness and matter of factness. Fundamentally a Romanticist world-view - the power of nature and mans relation to it - Muir delights in finding, sampling and discussing plants, animals and geography. The genre is best compared with Robert Louis Stevenson's Travels With a Donkey in the Cevennes and Thoreau's The Maine Woods.

5 out of 5 stars John Muir is really underrated as a writer.......2007-02-07

The title sums up quite a bit of the review for me. Not only was he a brilliant naturalist and visionary, but he was a better than decent science and adventure writer. This book, thousand mile walk to the gulf, is from Muir's younger days when he basically dropped out and went exploring. He walked from Wisconsin to the gulf, shortly after the war, and literally slept wherever. Hedges, roadsides, the occasional house. His observations on reconstruction South are all the more insightful because they are unadulterated (is that a word?) by any agenda, and have the overpowering reality of truth.

While his time in the Sierras is what he is most famous for, and the mountains more rugged and inspiring, this pre-Jenkins "Walk Across America" is a tamer warm-up for reading his journals from Yosemite days. I highly recommend it myself, it gives a bit of botany and a lot of background on Muir himself.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting Journey.......2006-12-14

One of John Muir's earliest works, this book traces his travels from Indiana to Florida, continuing on to Cuba, and ending up in California. At times, it is fascinating stuff. As he left in 1867, just after the American Civil War, he encounters many suspicious Southerners, although most are cordial to him. Muir wrote this as a journal of discovery, I think, to document the different flora and fauna he encounters in a part of the country with which he was not familiar. But this book is just as interesting as a social study - in other words, what was life like in America in 1867? How did the people act? How did they treat him? What were his impressions? If you have ever wondered about what America was like 150 years ago, you will find some answers here.

Additionally, Muir has some fine moments of nature writing. Sometimes he delights in just stopping and observing: "I used to lie on my back for whole days beneath the ample arms of these great trees, listening to the winds..." He calls the birds he observes "feathered people from the woods and reedy isles." And despite being a God-fearing man, he disagrees with those who take a fundamentalist view of nature, ridiculing the claim that the world was made especially for man..."a presumption not supported by the facts," says Muir.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. At times there is a little too much discussion on botany for my tastes, but that was OK. Muir's journal is rich with interesting anecdotes. With this journey, the founder of the Sierra Club was well on his way to making his mark in the world.

                                                  Four stars.

I thought this was a great insight into a time in our country when many things were undiscovered. Living in the south myself, it was great to hear about Bonaventure and descriptions of the people John Muir came across in his travels. If you want a sense of what nature and the southern way of life used to be like, this is the book for you.
