Book Description

The white, working-class neighborhood of Triomf, a suburb of western Johannesburg erected over the rubble of Sophiatown, from which hundreds of black families were forcibly removed in the 1950s, is the setting for Marlene van Niekerk's internationally acclaimed, multi-layered novel of modern South Africa. Triomf shines a harrowing and vividly colorful, often hilarious, light on the lives and daily routines of a twisted family, illuminating through a wicked wit and sharp eye a crystalline vision of the hypocrisies and hopelessness of a society living under the burden of Apartheid.

Mol Benade, her brothers Treppie and Pop, and son Lambert live in a rotting government house, which is the only thing they have, other than decaying appliances that break as soon as they're fixed, remembrances of a happy past that never really existed, and each other-a Faulknerian bond of familial intimacy that ranges from sympathetic to cruel, heartfelt to violently incestuous. In the months preceding South Africa's first free election in 1994, a secret will come to light that threatens to disintegrate and alter the bonds between this deranged quartet forever.

As lyrical and acutely observed as Nadine Gordimer's The House Gun and as penetrating as J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace, Triomf's microcosmic view of South Africa on the brink of disintegration has been acclaimed as one of the best novels ever written in Afrikaans. It marks the arrival of an author of international stature.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2007-02-20

I am a great admirer of Nelson Mandela and read anything that I can get my hands on about South Africa. I bought this book in the Dutch version but it was one big struggle to finish. There is really nothing that I liked about this book. I found the language ugly, repetitive and more of the same all the way through. I could not recognize anything lovable about the 4 characters of this family nor feel any compassion with the way they live their life. Maybe I am too naive or too spoiled but I completely failed to recognize the essence and quality of this novel.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint of Heart.......2005-10-11

Months after reading Triomf I can still close my eyes and like Dorothy clicking her heels, am quickly transported to heat, poverty, opressive depression and the sense of something really grimy nagging at the corners of my soul.

When someone chooses a book in order to visit another place I don't imagine this is the "where" many are after. The author - and translator - have managed a perfect journey, not very pretty, into the world of a South African version of poor white trash. The characters' lives are like the town they live in - built on destruction with God know what lying rotting under the surface. As I read I was almost desperate to find something, anything, to like about the characters. The few moments when that happened were rain in the desert. Sweet, relieving, and over very quickly.

This book is a slice of life written well enough to make it quite real. The question here is if you want to go where Marlene van Niekerk takes you.

3 out of 5 stars feeling ugly.......2005-08-04

There is value in reading this book. It is a peek into a different world, but it was not worth the bad feelings that lingered every time I put the book down.

The final collection of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith's seminal run on Conan the Barbarian. As with many collaborations between two extremely talented artists, Thomas and Windsor-Smith were producing the finest work of their careers just as their partnership on Conan came to an end. And like those great collaborations, we're left to wonder, "what if they'd stayed together... " This compilation features two outstanding creators at the top of their game, working on a compelling character whose popularity has never faded. Also included is the first issue of acclaimed artist John Buscema's definitive run.

An excellent reprint. The introduction of Red Sonja, even if toned down slightly due to comics code demands. Excellent example of Windsor-Smith's fine Conan work. Valeria is in here as well, definitely worth a look. The introduction is excellent, where Roy Thomas goes into detail into how they create the comics version of Sonja, as opposed to the version that appeared in the Howard story that they cribbed her from.

4 out of 5 stars don't buy this book ???.......2005-09-01

I have to begin that I was a casual Conan reader as I was growing up . I had the conan tresurary editon from MarvelComic's 1975 that had one of my most favorite comic stories Red Nails written by Roy Thomas and penciled and inked by Barry Windsor Smith , which just caught my imagination and will always be what Conan is to me. That out of the way I have to say don't buy this book unless you have the cash to buy them all because after you see the beautiful job Dark Horse did reproducing thes book you'll want them all !!! Each story is recolored and I love the job they did except for the Red Nails Story and if anyone has ever seen the orginal colored verion you know exactly what I mean . but other then that its a perfect collection and with an added bonus has an afterward by Roy Thomas that gives you back ground on the series and each story . Get these now before there out of print becaus you never know with the publishing rights kinda belonging to Dark Horse but getting permission from Marvel who knows if you ever see them again . [...]

1 out of 5 stars Smith's artwork disappears behind digital colorization.......2004-07-27

The main subject of my review is the impact of the heavy handed colorization on Barry Smith's artwork. I purchased the first four volumes of these Dark Horse reprints and I've never been happy with the color treatment imposed on Smith's art. I guess that I kept hoping that some how, some way Dark Horse might come to their senses and as Smith's drawing became more detailed they'd apply the color more appropriately. They did the opposite in volume four which reprints issues 23 through 26 of CONAN THE BARBARIAN (issues 23 contained "The Shadow of the Vulture", and 24 contained "The Song of Red Sonja" and were Smith's last work for this title) and "Red Nails" which appeared in black and white in issues two and three of SAVAGE TALES. "The Song of Red Sonja" and "Red Nails" show Smith as his most polished and are drawn in a highly decorative style with his extremely detailed brush and ink technique. But you won't be able to really see this in this book, because the overpowering digital color not only fails to assist Smith's exquisite line work, it obscures his drawing and makes it subservient to the color. Smith's beautifully rendered transitions from light to dark disappear under heavy applications of dark color, his carefully spotted blacks are swallowed up in digitized modelling and his dynamic panel to panel compositions become calcified bas reliefs. ~~ This may not bother some readers of this book, but Barry Smith's art is the ONLY reason I bought it. Much preferable is the black and white treatment his work received in the first nine issues of THE CONAN SAGA published by Marvel in 1987 and 1988. Not only can one enjoy the full glory of Smith's drawing in black and white, these magazines have the bonus of having covers that were drawn and colored by Smith himself. So, if the reason you're considering buying the first four volumes of Dark Horse's CHRONICLES OF CONAN is for the art, you'll find a better presentation in issues one through nine of this magazine; they're still pretty inexpensive too. ~~ I really hate giving this book one measley star, but Smith's art is vandalize in its pages.

5 out of 5 stars Barry Windsor-Smith's final and greatest Conan stories.......2004-05-17

The one substantive complaint about these reprints of the "Conan the Barbarian" comic books that Dark Horse has been reprinting as a prelude to launching their own version of Robert E. Howard's brawling barbarian has been that the original covers drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics have been omitted. That omission is mitigated somewhat by Volume 4 of "The Chronicles of Conan," which has the splash page from "Red Nails" as the cover. I have a strong affection for this particular piece of Windsor-Smith art because my college debate partner took the original black & white drawing from "Savage Tales" and blew it up on a 6-foot board that I have colored in and which has dominated my "office" for about half my life.

This collection has issues #23-26 of Marvel's "Conan the Barbarian" and the acclaimed "Red Nails" (For those concerned with continuity #22 is omitted because it was a reprint of #1) Of those two issues, all of which were written by Roy Thomas, Windsor-Smith drew the first two and John Buscema, who would be Conan's artist for most of the rest of its original run, took over as penciler on the last two. The second of those was inked by Ernie Chua (later Ernie Chan), who would be Buscema's primary inker on the comic book (the way Alfredo P. Alcala tended to do the inking over Buscema's pencils in the black & white magazine "The Savage Sword of Conan"). However, the chief attraction here is Windsor-Smith's final work on Conan.

Issue #22 "The Shadow of the Vulture," freely adapted from a Howard short story, is inked by Sal Buscema, Dan Adkins, and Chic Stone. The Vulture is Prince Yezdigerd's right-hand sword, who is sent to dispatch Conan. However, the story is more noted because this is the first Conan adventure with Red Sonja. This sets up #23 "The Song of Red Sonja," which Windsor-Smith inked himself (be sure to read Thomas' reflections in the back of the volume that cover some of the changes the Comics Code forced them to make with the artwork). When you compare how far Windsor-Smith came from the first issue of "Conan," let alone the infamous "X-Men" #53 that he drew on a New York City park bench, it is amazing how far he came as an artist. "Red Nails" has more scope and Thomas and Windsor-Smith are unfettered by the Comics Code, but all things considered "The Song of Red Sonja" is the best of their joint efforts. This explains why it gets to be the title for this final volume.

The Buscema issues are included, rather than whatever odds and ends Smith ever did of Conan and Howard related stories, because they finish the siege of Makkalet story line. Issue #25 "The Mirrors of Kharam Akkad," inked by Sal Buscema and John Severin (the latter does the King Kull flashback pages in a nice touch), is inspired in part by Howard's "The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune" story, another one of those stories where a sorcerer tries to get the better of Conan. In #26 "The Hour of the Griffin" the city finally falls and Conan tries to save Queen Melissandra. Conan's big fight is with a giant rat, which is not exactly a big thrill, but he does get to see the face of the one true Tarim, the reason for the war.

Buscema's Conan is a larger, more muscular version of the barbarian than what we saw with Windsor-Smith's art, which I always read as representing the fact he was a more mature character at that point. One of the interesting aspects of this final collection of early Conan stories is that the remastered color better suits the Windsor-Smith artwork. I know that part of why this works is that these stories are reprinted on much better quality paper in these volumes and that another key part is that this sort of thing is now done with computers, but Windsor-Smith's attention to detail in his drawings really gives the colorist something with which to work. Just look at the intricate lines on the shield on that great cover. Besides, now that we have this four-volume set of "The Chronicles of Conan" we can enjoy these classic comic books without having to take them out of the plastic that is keeping them safe for posterity.

Ok all, here is what you need to know.

First: This is the third book in the Ultramarines series, but at the same time it is the second book in the Iron Warrior series. So, you have to read the books in the following order 1)Deathbringer, 2)Warriors of Ultramar, 3) Storm of Iron, 4)Dead Sky. If you don't read Storm of Iron 3rd, then you will not understand the people and events that this book refers too, and you will feel that the development of the Chaos forces, as characters, are lacking.

Second: There are indeed some errors in this book that should have been corrected in the editing process. But, if you read the other three books, then you will want to finish the fourth book, so just live with the errors. They are not too many, and the story is pretty fast paced, so I suggest you just ignor them and enjoy the book.

It's not the best of the series, but if you enjoyed the first three books, you will enjoy this one also.

4 out of 5 stars Most violent book since the Bible.......2006-04-02

I have to agree with Alexander Strahan about the continuity errors. They were rather jarring, and could have been fixed in a matter of a few extra pages. Apart from that, however, I think I have just found my favorite author since I first read Patrick Suskind or Thomas Harris.

Graham McNeill's language is exquisitely, almost comically eloquent in it's descriptions of violence, gore, and cruelty. From Dead Sky, Black Sun, I've learned new (to me) and interesting ways to describe people being skinned (nay, flensed), and people being explosively ripped apart...knowledge that I'm sure will come in handy some day.

Thank you, Graham McNeill. You've made me a better person.

3 out of 5 stars This book worries me ..........2005-12-01

I have to tell you, I read a lot of BL fiction, and this is by FAR the most disturbing of the lot. I cannot quite work out whether this is a good thing or not. In many ways, it is utterly disgusting, but I suspect that quite a lot of McNeil's readers will expect and love it for exactly this reason.
The writing is not bad, although I think it's the weakest of the (otherwise great) Ultramarines novels.

5 out of 5 stars Great continuation of the Ultramarines saga.......2005-11-16

This is a great WH40k book. It's a little different from the others in the series, but still a great read. That's it. If you have read and enjoyed Mr. McNeill's other 40k stories, you will not be disappointed. To the reviewers who complain about the dark story and ultra-violence depicted in it, I must ask, what did you think you were reading? This story is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. A universe that is supposed to be in a perpetual state of war. Also, from the beginning of the book, the 2 main characters are banished to a Chaos world. Which would be like being banished to hell itself. Of course it's going to be gory and violent. And McNeill does a great job describing it. As for there being no character development in the first half of the book? Duh. This story is a continuation of the Ultramarines books and an almost direct sequel to Storm Of Iron. The character development is in those earlier stories. The things that happen in those books directly leads into this one. Strom of Iron was the first 40k novel I read. I used to play the table top game when I was younger and am still a great fan of the universe. If you are a fan then you'll enjoy it, too.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing title to an otherwise good work..........2007-06-24

The title of this book is misleading. When the term Aromatherapy is used in common language its is meant to imply the use of essential oils and other concentrated aromatic substances, such as expressed oils, absolutes and their more subtle by-products such as hydrosols/hydrolates.

While this work is beautifully crafted and the recipes appear to be interesting they for the most part only contain aromatic herbs & spices NOT aromatherapy materials. Perhaps the authors might like to review the title of this work to better reflect its contents to "Cooking with Aromatic Herbs & Spices" or "Fragrant Food" as this would be less misleading and disappointing to the reader.

My background is as a lecturer in and practitioner of Clinical Aromatherapist & Aromatic Medicine. I also make use of essential oils, absolutes & hydrosols in culinary applications as well as cosmetic and therapeutic.

This would be a great book if it is the last in your large collection, and you are looking for a card specific to something obscure like celebrating a chinese take-out! If you are looking for all around good ideas that can be easily adapted to a multitude of purposes and projects, this just isn't the book. While pretty to look at, I was disappointed from a practical point of view. I was going to sell it - until I noted that 40 other readers obviously thought the same thing (but didn't take the time to write a review it seems) Your time and dollars would be well spent looking for something else.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Captures the Book.......2005-05-15

I was given this book as a gift and have found it to be full of great ideas. The cards vary in their technical difficulty, however even the ones that take a few more minutes are worth the effort. In this day and age when people can go on-line and send a greeting card over the internet, these cards send an extra special message to the receiver. I used many materials that I had on hand and those that I needed were easy to find. My children enjoyed helping with some of the cards and still love to look page by page at the projects. I have also given this book to several friends and they have commented on the beautiful design of the book and the projects. Keep them coming!

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for beginner and advanced, thanks again, Heidi!.......2005-05-13

After purchasing Heidi's "Simply Beautiful Beading", I couldn't wait for this book. I wasn't disappointed. Great ideas - some simple, some more advanced. Directions are clear, nice templates, clever embellishments. I was even able to use some of her techniques in demonstrations I gave. I'm looking forward to her next book! Highly recommend.

I bought this book for my mother who loves to do crafts. In reading the book, I see that there are many projects that I can do myself. I think the ideas are fresh, the pages are colorful and the author simply knows how to market her talent. Great job and thanks for a great gift!

2 out of 5 stars some clever, some fill.......2005-04-02

This book has some clever ideas but not enough to warrant "50 quick and easy" projects. There are a dozen or so that are quite fussy and seemingly without purpose, like the What's cooking? card, the beehive card, tropical escape, and the blue jeans card. The Wild kingdom card message is supposed to be Run wild, Stand tall, Be strong. I send cards for thanks yous, get wells, and thinking of yous plus the usual holidays and can think of no time when a zebra or giraffe theme would have been appropriate. That's what I mean by filler. With some stretch you could possibly actually use them. One thing to watch out for in this book is how much money you can end up spending on tools and materials. Many of the ingredients are of the store-bought kind, like vellum, stamps, and letter stickers, not 'found' things from around the house.

A greeting card book with more clever and less filler and expense would have garnered this a five star rating.

Stenciling is one of the easiest ways to add a personal touch to handmade cards that are sure to be treasured by recipients. The 18 projects in Stenciling & Embossing Greeting Cards by Judith Barker showcase a wide range of styles, occasions, and skill levels. Most are relatively easy, though, and the excellent instructions--complete with individual step-by-step color plate--help ensure that anyone really can achieve these designs. Each project also features a photocopy-ready stencil pattern that can be enlarged and cut out, or choose a readymade stencil for even easier crafting. Embellishments include various paints, glitter, embossing, cutouts, even polymer clay and shrink plastic. A good resource list rounds out this nice presentation. --Amy Handy

I have watched stenciling and dry embossing on many craft shows and wanted to give it a try. This book helped me to do it quite simply and to create some great looking cards. Each card project has a list of the supplies you will need including stencil cream colors and gives you the name of the stencil company, item number of the stencil and where to purchase them. Each sample has step-by-step instructions -- both written and a picture of that step. At the end of each project they show you the card finished. ALL in color. I highly recommend this book to someone who wants easy to follow instructions, a great "visual" of each step and a look at how your finished card is going to look.
