Be reassured that in the times we are living we are blessed with genius words and thoughts of the calibre of beloved masters like Garcia Lorca and Cervantes. This Cuban writer has masterfully captured the essence of the Cuban, Spanish, African and Caribbean spirit. Characters Casta Diva, Marta, Chavito, Mercedes and Merengue, exquisitely come alive and you secretly wish they turned into real people you could invite into your linving room for a cup of strong café con leche. The religious symbolism takes you on a purposeful path through the political conflicts of an entire island population. If you want to get a glimpse of the mistery of Cuban life and passion, before the Revolution and as it evolves, of people who have not lost an ounce of spirit or 'ilusion', read and rejoice.

A big purple monster type guy protects a girl that is trying to help others. A nasty bad guy and his hordes of creepy little black chomping demon type things try and get to her.

That is, if most of this isn't just some demented dream or other. Entertaining, but maybe a little wayward.

The Maxx is a masterpiece. It's that simple.

Personally, I found The Maxx through watching the MTV Liquid Television show. I was very young, and very confused. Once I got older, though, I found a renewed interest in The Maxx and Sam K.'s work.

If you liked the show, and you know how to read, this is a no-brainer. Even if you've never seen the show, the various art styles, deep story and astounding, true-to-life dialog (Thanks to Messner-Loebs) will suck you in. This series honestly changed the way I look at life. You can see the specifics on the story in other reviews. I just wanted to share what The Maxx means to me. Which is a lot. Thank you, Sam Kieth.

5 out of 5 stars Best comic reading experience .......2006-03-03

The first three volumes of the Maxx are by far the best experience in reading comics I have ever had. Seeing how the story unfolds and the mystery of all this crazy stuff unravels is awesome. Sam Kieth does an excelent job of dropping hints and little visual clues along the way without giving plot points away to soon. this was an excelent comic and sam keith's visual style is so neat.

I do not read comic books. I got the first volume of The Maxx because I enjoyed the cartoon so much - and volume 1 is almost exactly like the cartoon. The same is with the first half of volume 2 - then it starts to expand in strange and interesting rhelms!

Now - I can't help it, I'm ordering volume #3, I'm hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Get at least first 12 issues.......2005-02-21

Ok, this book is the beginning of the Maxx series. The story of Maxx that goes on til first breakup of Dave and Julie is the best considering whole series (first 10-11 ish).

If you are a fan, get first twenty issues. Issues 12-20 are also about Dave and Julie. After that, story is about Mister Gone's daughter, her Maxx and it strays even more around ish 30 into some one shots and Friend of Maxx like stories. Maxx is 35 issues long, but first 10 issues are must get. They are best art/story combo EVER, and only story arc comparable to best stories of Sandman.

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to a Great Series........2006-06-26

I loved this series when Games Workshop first published them in the late 80s. I'm very happy to see the old books updated and back in print and thrilled that new books are being written.

Long live Dark Future!

Also, to the person who asked if he need to play a video game to understand the story... No, you just need to be able to pay attention to the novel as you're reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but there's some cut and paste..........2006-03-24

One of the things that Dave Stone does best is throw ideas at you, as fast as he can - one minute you're watching the activities of the newly sexless, immortal residents of Des Moines, the next you're watching some truly wonderful bizarre imagery of a Cthulhuesque dream.

One problem, though, is that if you've read either The Medusa Seed or Wetworks, you've already read chunks of this book - there's a lot of sections in this book directly cut-and-pasted from those earlier works, which is disappointing.

Stone also seems to have trouble creating an interesting plot to go with all of the "mad ideas" that he throws into these stories; the characters tend to be one-dimensional, the narratives are frequently fragmented, and you get the impression that Stone's more interested in showing you all of these neat ideas than in creating a story. At one point, he even has a character in the story describe the plot of Gologtha Run as a book he's reading, which is a bit of metafiction that's already been done by the Illuminati trilogy. It's not a bad book by any means, but it doesn't live up to the potential that I was hoping for.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book! - Highly recommended :o).......2005-11-20

Having read and enjoyed the Dark Future novels the original time round (when they were published in the early 90s) I approached this new offering to the relaunched range with trepidation - would it be any good? Could it possibly hope to match the quality of Kim Newman/Jack Yeovil's writings? Thankfully any concerns I may have had were unfounded - Dave Stone is on top form, this is a fantastic book and excellent addition to the series! There's some really twisted imagery and ideas here - this is a definitely a Dark Future - but they're close enough to reality for disturbing parallels and analogies to be made. The storyline and characters were engaging and interesting and there are a number of hilarious moments if you like your black humour. Highly recommended! - 9/10

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, I was just plain - Bored!.......2005-10-29

I liked the sound of this novel, but just couldn't get into the character, nor the world.

I was simply lost. Do you have to play a stupid board or video game first? I just wanted, and expected, to have a solid reading experience.

This unusual biography blends imagination and fact in an exquisitely told tale about the most reveled and admired woman of Christianity. Hazleton has been criticized for blurring the lines between research and fiction. (It's true--she does.) Nonetheless, she weaves an outstanding interpretation of this Palestinian girl, who probably went by the name of Maryam and gave birth to "the son of God" at the age of 13. At times Hazleton's style seems similar to that of Anita Diamant in The Red Tent-—fully imagining the everyday feminine details of biblical women: "Maryam learned early about childbirth. Since she was young, her grandmother has taken her along whenever there's a delivery. The old woman is in her fifties, but as alert and sharp as any shepherd girl; like all village wise women, she seems to defy age. Her name? The same as the midwife of apocryphal legend: Salome." Hazleton goes on to depict Maryam as an astute apprentice, mixing herbs and learning the craft of healing and midwifery from her legendary grandmother. Hazleton assumes that Maryam was a gifted faith healer and member of a resistance movement against King Herod--gifts and values that were obviously passed onto her son. She also offers a compelling discussion into the identity of Joseph, even questioning his existence. Hazleton sees him as a vague father-figure for Mary, more so than a father to Jesus. The main reason he exists in the Bible, she speculates, is to establish Jesus as a descendent of Kind David. Though purists and fundamentalists may cry blasphemy, many modern readers will find this a refreshingly feminine and respectful life study of a cherished woman, mother and icon. --Gail Hudson

    Book Description

Starting with a dark-skinned girl barely out of adolescence when she gives birth, Lesley Hazleton weaves together the many facets of Mary's existence: peasant villager, wise woman and healer, activist, mother, teacher, and yes, virgin, though in a sense we have long forgotten. She follows her through the worst any mother can experience-the excruciating death of her child-and then looks at how she transforms grief into wisdom, disaster into renewal. Strong and courageous, the Mary we see here does not merely assent to her role in history, but chooses it and lives it to the fullest.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mary - Woman not Icon.......2006-02-26

While I doubt the Mary (Maryam) of history was quite the easily-recognizable feminist that Lesley Hazleton portrays, at least this Mary is treated as a living, breathing woman of her time. I can recommend this book highly as an invitation to those who are tired of seeing Mary as an icon who is no more human than a statue. To those who insist that the Mary of the institutional Church is the only possible Mary, I say please don't read this book; it will just upset you unnecessarily.

5 out of 5 stars Mary: Finally flesh and blood.......2004-09-22

Lesley Hazleton has broken an icon, one that holds great meaning for millions of people. She has taken the most important woman in Christianity, identified her as a jew, a very young, very poor, very real person who lived in Jesus' time. It is Mary the healer that we meet; Mary who knew much about the world around her. Hazleton's ability to dig deep into the literature and culture of the middle east is supported by her knowledge of the languages and the fact that she lived there for 13 years. Her explorations of the possibilities within the biblical accounts of Jesus' time present an extraordinary example of an author who has both the intellectual capacity to examine these texts with a reporter's skills and the imagination to invest Mary (Maryam as Hazleton calls her.) with a humanness that is both touching and
challenging. I loved the writing. I loved the journey. I loved living in the time which I certainly did while reading this book.
Anyone who has ever scratched their head and wondered how Mary handled what she saw when she witnessed her only child dying a slow, cruel, painful death on a cross must read this book. It is a fascinating and convincing story.

1 out of 5 stars Mary,: A Flesh and Blood Biography of the Virgin Mother.......2004-08-06

I was outraged in reading this book. I can't imagine why someone who obviously has absolutely no faith would write a biography of Mary. Other than being an insult to anyone of faith, it is not a biography at all, but a book about the times that Mary lived in. It is quite clear that the author has no knowledge of the biblical Mary and no understanding of faith or Christianity. Don't waste your money or time on this book. I had to give this book one star, but it deserved none.

1 out of 5 stars New Age Sentimentality; .......2004-07-24

How can you write a new biography about the Virgin Mary when you have only the gospels? Lesley Hazelton's solution is to use anthropological and historical information to fill the background. Starting off with the basic facts about being a first century Jewish peasant, she uses information about Galilee, being a healer, pregnancy and childbirth, first century polytheism, and nasty details about crucifixion. In her view Mary, or Maryam, was pregnant at thirteen. She was probably a healer who taught her son. She certainly would have assisted the rebellion that broke out on the death of Herod the Great in 4 BCE. She may have been raped, possibly by a solider, possibly by priests. Notwithstanding that traumatic event, she was "a strong woman of ability and wisdom who actively chose her role in history, and lived it to the fullest." Now a reader might look at Hazleton's rather sparse notes, and note some scholarship, but a closer look would reveal that never gives page numbers. In fact this is simply a reverse of the old devotional lives. Where they portrayed Mary as an exemplar of Christian dogma, she portrays her as a New Age hero. Both do violence to the real Jewish Mary.

One of Hazleton's flaws is anachronism of evidence. She relies on a mid-century history of Palestinian peasant life, and then assumes that there were no changes in the intervening nineteen centuries. She uses Barbara Ehrenreich's deeply flawed book on medieval midwives to argue that Mary would have been a healer. Even if women were healers at that time, it does not follow that Mary would be one of them. She uses information from the Intafada to argue that Mary would have supported the rebellion on Herod's death. (Later still she argues, against the evidence of both Matthew and Luke, that Jesus was actually born ten years after Herod's death, which means that Mary would have been 2 at the time of the rebellion.) There are other examples of Hazleton's shallow grasp of Palestinian history. Contrary to what she says, there is some evidence of synagogues at the time in Galilee. Herod the Great would not have thought about declaring himself a divinity, since he was actually Jewish. Palestine was not of strategic value because it was part of the Grain land route from Egypt to Rome; grain would have been shipped entirely by sea. Contrary to what Hazleton says, Galileans in the Roman era were not descended from the old Israeli monarchy. They were fervently Jewish who probably descended from settlers in the second century.

These errors allow Hazleton to make the preposterous claim that Mary was a Goddess worshipper, and even said prayers to Isis! There is no evidence to support such a suggestion. Josephus refers to the Galilean's devotion, and the archaeological evidence clearly shows that there was no major Gentile presence at this time. Exclusive monotheism is one of the clearest and best attested ideas of first century Judaism. There is certainly no evidence that Mary would have been aware of the esoteric, much later, gnostic speculation that Hazleton (of course) links her to. But then Hazleton's ideas about religion are pretty sentimental. She has John the Baptist believe "that God was inside you, not in a temple," an idea that was "an early manifestation of the democratic spirit." In point of fact John clearly argued that the world faced imminent judgement for its sins. Hazleton may prefer the cosmopolitan and tolerant virtues of paganism, but they have nothing to do with Mary. One should add that the book in infected with purple prose about fertility and Mary's grief over the crucifixion. One should note that Hazleton talks about things that she has no way of knowing, such as saying there was no "romance" in first century Palestine, or what age girls were married at, or how many children they were likely to have, or what Mary's grandmother was like. There are also several pages where Hazleton tries to have it both ways on Mary's sexuality. Obviously Mary isn't drearily celibate, but on the other hand it would be crudely rationalist to deny her virginity.

The simplest explanation is also the most reasonable. There is no evidence that Mary was a Christian, only that she survived the death of her son. Both Paul and the Gospels clearly state that Jesus had siblings. To say that they were merely cousins or kinsmen is simply gratuitous assertion, which can be gratuitously denied. Christian dogma denied Mary her family and her religion because it undercut the doctrine of perpetual virginity and, more important, the Incarnation. Hazleton does the same thing, but claims that this is an act of empowerment. Readers should not be similarly deluded.

    5 out of 5 stars A.......2004-04-13

I read Mary like a house on fire. Truly, this work is a gem of intellectual courage, imaginative risk taking, penetrating scholarship, and spell-binding writing -- a beautiful evocation that makes those Catholic school plaster statues of Mary leap out of their alcoves and into spirited life. This is the Mary the church fathers don't want you to know. This is a flesh and blood Mary, the real woman behind the iconic image. Hazleton rediscovers Mary as a human being, and in so doing makes her divinity more personal, intimate, and real. Like Jesus, this Mary had the courage to be herself under every set of circumstances.
Lesley Hazleton's Mary is not the second Eve of the church fathers' - the obedient virgin who redeems the first Eve's primal rebellion. This Mary is the Great Mother Godess who is, "short, wiry, with dark olive skin and the trace of of a moustache on her upper lip." This Mary doesn't come with the good table manners and idealized looks of the Renaissance virgin. Hazleton delivers Mary from the hands of ecclesiatsical partriarchy, and gives us a historical Mary whose divinity suffers not one whit.

The Chefs of Cucina Amore, companion to the television show of the same name, stands on its own as an entertaining Italian cookbook. Most of its 100-plus dishes suit the modern palate while also being true to their regional Italian roots. In the TV shows, four Italian cooking experts, singly and in pairs, cook with host Victor Schiavelli, a food writer and actor. Schiavelli, in the book's introduction, gives you the unique flavor of each chef's personality. Faith Willinger is known for her devotion to the simple food of Tuscany. Nancy Harmon Jenkins also cooks Tuscan, but here she goes beyond Italy at times, making a kind of Greek ratatouille called soufiko. Joe Simone, a chef from Boston, adds exuberance and more sophisticated flavors in his Butternut Squash Soup with croutons of crushed Amaretti and sautéed prosciutto. Finally, master baker Nick Malgieri offers savory baked foccacia, classic sweets like cannoli and tiramisu, and luscious Neapolitan Torta Caprese, a superrich chocolate cake. This book will bring home many of the TV show's pleasures and all of its delicious food, and reading it will expand your understanding of Italian food as well as your repertoire. --Dana Jacobi

Fans of the PBS series will adore this book because it brings the show to life right in your own kitchen. People who've never heard of the show will love the book because it's one of the best Italian cookbooks you'll ever find.

Four highly skilled and well-trained chefs lead us through a variety of fabulous foolproof dishes, and they do not lead us astray.

Each recipe is accompanied by a beautiful full page color photograph, as well as a helpful and interesting anecdotal notation about the main ingredients in the recipe. The recipe itself is clear, methodical, and leaves no room for error. I've tried at least two dishes from each chef and have never been disappointed.

Oddly enough, I caught only one episode of the PBS series but I was so impressed, I had to get the book immediately! I am a serious cookbook collector and have been disappointed many times. The Chefs of Cucina Amore is a definite winner. It's a delight to look at and is consistently rewarding to cook from. I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly savors exceptional Italian cooking.

The reader will explore the different styles and patterns found throughout the many different countries and regions of Europe. The book features whole-cloth quilts representing France, the Netherlands, and Wales, medallion or framed quilts, stripple quilts, hexagons, Log Cabins, and many others. Tina's book also includes 18 fully illustrated patterns and a color section featuring beautiful quilts from her own collection.

2 out of 5 stars Not Up to Par.......2006-12-21

This is a 62 page book with instructions for 18 quilts for the beginning quilter to the advanced. I found only 3 quilts that I liked but not enough to make any but one of them. This is a book which I'll be putting in my next yard sale. You might want to check this out at a library or book store before deciding to buy. If the library doesn't have it you could order it through a book store to view.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite little quilts.......2005-08-27

This lovely book provides patterns for doll size quilts. But what quilts! These little quilts are big quilts in miniature - the pieces have been cut in scale and the fabrics have been chosen so that they are suitable for the sizes of the pieces in the quilts.

The book is not aimed at the beginner who has never made a quilt but anyone who has made a couple of patchwork quilts would be able to tackle any of the project recipes in this book.

A wide range of techniques is covered in the 18 miniature quilts featured in the book and there should be something for everyone. Techniques covered include whole cloth miniature quilts in the Welsh style through to the traditional English paper pieced quilts from the 19th century, applique work and traditional American blocks. There is also an introductory section covering absolute basics so that you have some idea of what the author is referring to in the patterns.

This is a super book which most quilters will enjoy!

THIS BOOK, WHILE IT IS A REVIEW OF THE DESIGNER AND OF COURSE SOME OF THE INTERIORS ARE PRETTY, THE LAYOUT OF THE BOOK IS A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT...I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT EXCEPT AS A REVIEW OF "ONE THOUSAND AND ONE DECORATING IDEAS." DISAPPOINTING

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2004-09-10

Anyone hoping to find innovative design ideas here is going to be extremely disappointed. The photos look dated, very '80s inspired. Mr. Jeffrey has not added any original thought or decorating ideas to the text and the book certainly has no practical solutions, not that I would want to decorate my house in a style that looks so dated. There wasn't a single picture in this book which impressed or inspired me.

DISAPPOINTING. Don't waste any money or time on this book.

I never write reviews but had to on this one.
This book was an incredible journey through different periods and styles. I appreciate Mr. Jeffrey's sense of design and style. Smart without fussiness, Clean without being cold and then the amazing antiques and art work. Mr. Jeffrey's rooms are like musical masterpieces, harmonious and never tiring!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous.......2001-12-21

This book is just what you would expect from the very talented Noel Jeffrey: beautiful, livable, informative. I've always admired Mr. Jeffrey's work--especially the show houses he has done--and this puts in one place all of his creativity and innovation. Not stuffy, this is a trained and casual elegance; what I think most of us are trying to achieve in our houses. I don't want to live in a museum; I want to live in an environment. With his versatile view of design--Noel Jeffrey offers here about 25 different options.

This is a great read and a great buy.

Though she retired from the screen in the early 1970s, Brigitte Bardot remains an enormously popular sex symbol. Her image continues to be mimicked and recycled almost as often as Bardot herself continues to be hounded. Jeffrey Robinson sees Bardot's life as a story about the enormous cost of fame. He follows her as she rockets to stardom in her teens and ever after consumes the attention of the merciless media while making films, championing humanitarian causes, and bedding lovers.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars B.B.-Bad.......2005-02-14

"Bardot: An Intimate Portrait" is both a good and bad title -- on one hand, Jeffrey Robinson lets us in on lots of love life info. On the other, he seems uninterested in Brigitte Bardot as a person, and more as an icon. As the book goes on, it becomes obvious that Robinson cares more about worshiping Bardot than telling the world about her.

Brigitte Bardot was born into a strict middle-class family, who considered actors "gypsies" and expected her to be a dancer. But her life changed when she met Roger Vadim, an energetic young film director who made her his muse, and married her as a teenager. Soon "B.B." was a legend for her free-lovin' movies and sultry image.

But B.B. wasn't as crazy about movies as the movies were crazy about her. While going through a succession of lovers and husbands that would make J.Lo proud, she quit the movies and devoted herself to animal care -- sometimes at the expense of the humans around her -- and living an ultra-reclusive life.

Robinson does a passable job of telling Bardot's life story, from her life as a feted star to her work as an animal rights activist. That stuff is interesting. But he pads it out with stories about how amazing, wonderful and exquisite she is -- barely a page goes by without a quotation burbling about how extraordinary she is.

The problem is, the way he tells it, she is not an exceptional person -- she comes across as a bit dizzy, rather bland, and alternately obnoxious and sweet. Oh yeah, and obsessed with lawsuits. Not a single quote of hers is memorable, and only a few of her good deeds are. It's difficult to take Robinson's adoration seriously when he says in the epilogue that she is better than perfect, she's "unique." Not the way he tells it.

Were she not an exceptional beauty, it's doubtful anyone in this book have been so quick to talk about how glorious she is. As a person, she comes across as very, very ordinary. It certainly doesn't help that Robinson devotes most of the book to A) telling us how saintly Bardot is, B) dismissing false rumors, and C) excusing all her bad behavior. All people who are less than 100% complimentary toward Bardot are dismissed as "nasty," such as great Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni.

Far from being nasty, Mastroianni's candor is refreshing in a book full of rosy worship. In essence, only die-hard fans of Brigitte Bardot will be able to stomach all this praise... which appears to center on Bardot's beauty, and nothing more.

4 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2003-08-16

Brigette Bardot has a very amazing and interesting life story. I really enjoyed reading this and found it very inspiriting. She is very raw in her words and emotion and passionate about her love for animals. She was a free sprirt and really changed to way alot of people thought. She inspired pop culture and rock n' roll and the entire sexual revolution!!! I hope her own bio "initials B.B." will be released in English format someday. I also enjoyed Tony Crawleys book "The Films of B.B.". She was the French Marilyn Monroe!

          3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Soul.......2002-04-14

This book is about one of my heroes, Brigitte Bardot. It isn't the best written book but it is interesting. It has a lot of interviews with people who were close to Brigitte at different times in her life. It goes from the beginning of her life when as a young teenager encouraged by her mother she started down the road to becoming an international film star and sex symbol. This was before people had much consciousness about the objectification of women and Brigitte was so beautiful and sensual that she was exploited to the maximum degree. She has been hounded by fans and photographers all of her life but she has remained gentle and good-natured. She has had several failed marriages and suicide attempts and a life of drama, drama, drama. Yes, all that is true, but that is not why I enjoyed this book nor is it why I admire this incredible person. This book also tells about her involvement in and dedication to Animal Rights activisim. She has tirelessly supported and protected the humane treatment of animals around the world and particularly in her home country of France. She has brought about huge changes in the way animals are treated in France and has raised consciousness throughout the world. Her foundation fights animal abuse worldwide. Perhaps because of her experiences as a "sex kitten" she came to understand the cruel and degrading way that human beings can treat other living beings as objects for their use. This book is the only one I could find that tells her story so I enjoyed it, but I don't think it does justice to this enigmatic, courageous and beautiful soul. Her story is more complex than this book indicates, but if you are interested in a pioneer in the Animal Rights movement or if you just love BiBi it is worth the read.

          Book Description

Actress and sex symbol Brigitte Bardot had a stunning career in France and America in the mid-20th century. Since the 1970s, she has dedicated her life to the welfare and protection of animals, with much personal involvement. In this book the author makes the case that far from being just a pretty face or a spotlight grabber, Bardot was an accomplished actress and has always been an intelligent, sensitive individual.

Chapters acquaint readers with her Paris childhood and her rebellious coming of age in a Catholic bourgeois family, who disapproved when she appeared on the cover of Elle magazine and was offered a screen test. The book examines her years in film (with careful analysis of her films) and also covers her tumultuous personal life, including suicide attempts, and the beginnings of her interest in animal protection. Final chapters detail her efforts in worldwide animal welfare activism, including the work of her own international foundation.

5 out of 5 stars The French Marilyn Monroe.......2006-08-01

Bardot lives unlike her American counterpart. And her life since the 1970's has been a committment to animal rights. A biopic on the tragedy and triumphs of an international living screen legend. Bardot was the blonde goddess on the beach in Cannes decades before Pamela Anderson hit the small screen on Baywatch. The latter seems to be following the lead of the former and one wonders: what happened to beauty's promise in youth? Bardot herself has commented that she gave her youth to men and in her twilight years gives her passion to the cause of animal rights. A turmoil of a life filled with the heights of stardom intermingled with psychological demons and power lost when youthful beauty faded. Bardot is now in retirement and a recluse in France but her legend remains. Was beauty not supposed to bring lasting happinness?

Limited general information and sometimes wrong (such as Brigitte's Bardot's "real" name). It mostly consists of listening to the stars' movie trailers which is very uninteresting since they were developed to be shown on screen not radio. Especially silly is listening to Brigitte Bardot's since most of her films shown in the US were dubbed, so you not only are not seeing her but not even hearing her own voice. This is of no value.

I bought this used, and the quality of the book printed thirty years ago was perfect. There were a few nicks on the cover, but the pages with all the content was perfect. Unfortunately I can't see this book coming back into print anytime soon, so odds are one has no choice then to buy it used. It provieds an ample amount of pictures of Norma Shearer, her films, and a lengthy biography, along with the standard cast, crew, and critics notices (on the films).

5 out of 5 stars where the wealthiest meet.......2004-12-30

This book makes you imagine you're in the village of Saint Tropez. Situated at the Mediterranean coast, in the South of France, it's a place blessed with a Californian climate.

You won't be on your own, by the way. Saint Tropez, once an innocent fisherman's village, is now a jet-set bathing resort. A place to show off yourself and/or your most outrageous luxuries. A place with standards looser en more immoral than elsewhere. The many splendid photos in 'the Spirit of St. Tropez' testify about that.

Consequently this book is mostly filled up with gossip about all celebrities visiting. It opens with an introduction by Brigitte Bardot, who in 1958 purchased her summer-resort in Saint Tropez. And whose most famous movie 'Et Dieu créa la femme' (= and God created woman) was shot in and around this very village. Later on Bardot was followed by celebrities like Mick Jagger, Donna Summer, Jane Fonda, Jack Nicolson, Picasso, princess Diana, and all other sorts of royalty.

St. Tropez also has its literary touch. Such as by the famous French novelist Françoise Sagan. Or by Colette, another great name in French literature. Colette's opinion: "no road goes right through St. Tropez. There is just one that leads you to the village, but no further. If you want to leave, you have to go back on your tracks. But will you want to leave?"

I agree with the above reviewer. This book is excellent! This book goes deep. It explains a lot on BB's life. It's not an ordinary biography. The author seems to have gathered all the best info he could find on Bardot. In it are a lot of her witty lines in interviews. There are tons & tons of great pics of beautiful Brigitte. Once I began to read I could not put it down. The things BB says are so smart & witty. She reminds you of Marilyn Monroe. And he covers all her movies in the back thoroughly, with old reviews, the plot of the movie, & the behind-the scenes of the movie (also includes BB's thoughts of the movie). Beware though that sometimes you can't understand what the author says bcz he begins to write in French or begins to get too psychological. Those parts you can just skip over though. If you are a BB fan you cannot pass on this!

I have read several books on Brigitte Bardot and

this is one of the best. It does explain so much

her status as a major cultural figure and puts her

career in proper perspective. My only complaint

is that there was not more about her early dancing
              days.
