Book Description
The setting is Boston, Fall 1969. Radical groups plot revolution, runaway kids prowl the streets, cops are at their wits end, and work is hard to get, even for hookers. Hobie McNutt, a seventeen year old runaway from West Virginia drifts into a commune of young revolutionaries. It's a warm, dry place, and the girls are very available. But Hobie becomes involved in an increasingly vicious struggle for power in the group, and in the mounting violence of their political actions.
His father Hunter, who has been involved in a brave and dangerous campaign to unseat a corrupt union president in the coal miners union, leaves West Virginia to hunt for his runaway son. To make ends meet, he takes day-labor jobs in order to survive while searching for him.
Living parallel lives, their destinies ultimately movingly collide in this sprawling classic of radicalism across the generations, in the vein of Pete Hamill, Jimmy Breslin, and Richard Price.

This is my favorite book in the world.......1999-07-24
John Sayles is better known as a film maker, but he's an even better novelist. This book is the best example of why. If one flashback chapter can lead to a movie as good as "Matewan," imagine what the rest of the book is like. For a more playful story with equally serious themes, try "Pride of the Bimbos," too.

Book Description
In this first book of an all-new Deryni trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Katherine Kurtz takes readers back in time--before King Kelson's bride...before King Kelson's birth... when the magical Deryni blood was sought by the most powerful men and women in the kingdom of Gwynedd. Back when a man named Donal ruled over all.
Customer Reviews:
Practical Magic.......2007-10-11
Since the series debuted there has been magic in two worlds, Katheryn Kurtz' Deryni eleventh century and here on earth, and even though I have grown older Morgan remains young and vital. Very vital, he's just getting around to being born in this newest gift from Ms Kurtz. Some stories fade as they go along, others take a terrible turn for the worst...(Anita Blake) and some just drift off, but not with the firm hand of Ms Kurtz on the rudder. There's murder, intrigue, plots, counter plots and magic aplenty and in all of the complex story line one thing holds true, Morgan is all Morgan.
I am a bit smug, I started way back when this was an L. Sprague De Camp/ Lin Carter recuritment project. Some guys just know how to pick a winner. The Deryni will delight, amaze and enthrall you and in the thirty-seven years I have been following the saga I have but one complaint...I can read'em faster than she can write them.
Get this book. Of course you'll have to read all of the novels in the series so why not just buy all of them now? I know that's a lot of money but you'll think it cheap once you've read. Then you'll join the ranks of the faithful, waiting, watching and wanting until the next book comes out. But wait there is a new book, Childe Morgan and by the time you've finished it the rest will be there.
Terrific.......2007-06-18
I couldn't give this book five stars if I compared it to some of her best books. But comparing it to every other fantasy book out there, Kurtz's book shines, as always. If I could ask for improvement it would be for a little more intricate, a little more subtle court intrigue and more adventure. I like the twists and turns of Kurtz's novels. Delightful read.
In the King's Service.......2007-01-22
For those of us who loved the first three Deryni books, this is a wonderful chance to meet Alaric Morgan's parents and King Kelson's father and grandfather. The book is well written and thoroughly enjoyable, as all of Ms. Kurtz' books are, but not recommended for first time readers of the Deryni Saga. It is slow moving and a little short on action but great on character development and background. If you loved the story of Alaric Morgan and King Kelson, you will enjoy finding out how they got there.
Where's the magic?.......2007-01-16
My review will echo several others here in that I am a huge Katherine Kurtz fan and this novel was a disappointment for me. The world that Kurtz created and we loved that involved the first two trilogies centering around Saint Camber and then King Kelson Haldane were delights to read. Reading this book was equivalent to reading "The Crossroads of Twilight" from Robert Jordan from a dedicated fan's perspective. The use of magic in the book is muted and mainly revolved around the psychic dimension of the Deryni powers. I will read the reviews of the next book before buying.
Very entertaining.......2006-03-04
I have to agree with many of the reviews here and say that this story does not have much of a plot as the other books did. It is pretty much just a story of the 2 generations before Kelson. We all know how it has to end but we don't know exactly how the story gets there. I think that this book is a must for any serious Katherine Kurtz fan for that reason.
Customer Reviews:
The Diamonds saga finds its solution.......2000-04-20
This is the last of the four Diamonds novels. You will feel rather lost if you haven't read the first three books.
I'm running into danger of repeating myself, but I have to mention that Mr. Chalker manages to surprise us again. The conditions on Medusa are totally different from Lilith, Cerberus and Charon, as well as the plot and the fate of our hero. You won't get bored, that's for sure.
Of course, when the fourth mission is over, the Confederation agent, as you might have expected, puts all four reports together and sets about solving the mystery behind it all. Read the book to see what happens.
"Medusa" is not a bad book, but it's far from reaching the level of "Lilith". It's approximately as good as "Cerberus" and "Charon". The final solution is - to my taste - too fantastic and far-fetched. I was slightly disappointed. Still, it's a great series, absolutely worth reading.
i still remimber it after years.......1998-11-11
I read this book years ago along with the others in the group (there are 4 in all). they still stand out in my mind when I think of good adventure sci-fi. the concept off these books alone is enough to keep you thinking, imagine they clone you 4 times ,send each clone down onto a planet he can never return from to spy on / gain control of its government. while you are left in space to oversee the copies of yourself and collect what they find out. add to that each world has a quirk of its own. one will not abide any technology but magic (seems)to work. on another you can change bodies with someone just by sleeping to close to them (whether you want or not). on yet another your body will mutate to suite its environment on the fly (jump in the water ,you got gills ) ect (NOW IMAGINE YOU WAKE UP THINKING YOUR YOU ONLY TO FIND OUT YOUR ONE OF THE CLONES)

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Homeschooling Books I Have Read!.......2007-06-30
I found this gem at our local library and have renewed it TWICE. In that time, I've read through it two times and started a notebook to take extensive notes on each chapter!
Curry presents a very realistic and attainable ideal of what the homeschool should be, particularly for the Christian family. She encourages the homeschooler to look to God's Word for instruction and encouragement and move away from external ideas on what learning "should" look like.
This book, in addition to Mary Pride's Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling and Catherine Levison's A Charlotte Mason Education have been highly influential in the development of our homeschool program.
Curry covers all the major "subjects," as well as art instruction, music and much more. She gives practical, low-cost guidance on teaching, along with a huge helping of encouragement and admonition to the homeschooling family.
I also recommend Ruth Beechick's books.
VERY highly recommended!
The Best How-To-Manual!.......2007-04-13
This is the best homeschooling book I have read and my most valuable homeschooling resource! This is a must read for anyone considering or currently homeschooling. I am constantly re-reading this over and over. I find/learn something new each time. You will not be disappointed!
Very Helpful.......2006-07-12
The value in this book is that we don't have to be overwhelmed by all of the curriculum choices out there and there are other options which can be more frugal. Her techniques are quite simple. I felt this book to be very encouraging while also laying out some principles we may want to consider in our parenting and homeschooling.
My favorite chapter was toward the end, "Abiding in the Vine." I felt inspired to continue on homeschooling while striving to do even better.
The author is correct in saying that we may want to limit TV viewing for our children. I can see where such graphic intensity has diminished many peoples desire to read and to read at elevated levels, my own and my children's as well.
Over all a great book to read before purchasing curriculum and just starting out homeschooling.
Preachy and condescending.......2006-07-11
I read this book eagerly thinking it would give me great tips on doing home school in an easier manner. It does do that, but the writer's style is extremely off-putting. Though I am a Christian, I could not stand the implications that if one let their children read anything other than the KJV of the Bible or let their children watch TV, they were not being good parents or good Christians. Too much for me to wade through to get to the good stuff.
I finally defined a vision for our homeschool!.......2005-08-08
After researching homeschooling for 11 years and actively doing so for 5, I am STILL reaping so much from this book. I read it through once and then re-read it making the suggested lists and checklists and all I can say is WOW!
I WISH I had read this book first!! I checked out "Easy Homeschooling Companion" from my library a year ago but I was still in the "I-need-to-know-WHICH-curriculum-to-choose" mindset so I didn't get anything out of it (I'm going to get it again...I bet I missed out on a LOT!) I have always felt the
lead to design our own curriculum and have had "How to Create a
Low-Cost/No-Cost Curriculum" and ALL of the Design-A-Study books for many years but have never been able to "put it all together" with a plan...so I kept searching for THE curriculum for us. I knew there wouldn't be a "perfect" program but I figured the changes should be minor to warrant the continued
use/purchase of said program. Unfortunately, the changes were always wholesale so we dropped it. But now, since reading this book I have been able to define my vision for our home education journey...I can finally SEE an "overall" plan for
our homeschool as God has been leading! Even in your book there are things we probably won't focus on; but I have gained SO much from seeing your overall plan based on your goals for your family. I can see how we can now focus our daily journey to have our homeschool as my husband and I first envisioned. I took your advice and didn't buy any ("more" in my
case :-) curriculum until I finished your book. I did finally buy a program I believe with minor modification will help us reach our goals. But unlike before, when I made this purchase, I have a MUCH better idea of what types of materials will help us reach our goals...because I have my goals written down! I've read before about setting goals but the way you lead the reader in the SPECIFICS is unmatched! I LOVE your use of checklists and have begun using this listing technique all through our home and lives.
I have THOUROUGHLY enjoyed and learned SO much from reading this
book. I used to recommend Gayle Graham's "How to Homeschool" as THE homeschool book to purchase first or if you could only have one. I will now move that down a notch and recommend "Easy Homeschooling Techniques" as THAT book.

Customer Reviews:
Don't Rely on These Values.......2007-09-06
This book is a fantastic take-along for going to antique stores and garage sales and the like. It contains several helpful sections to help you identify patterns including a catagorized section of borders (birds, floral, art deco, etc.) and a shape guide which is primarily useful when looking for plates and serving pieces. All of the photos of actual pieces are in color. This book also contains several patterns that Gene Florence's Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass does not.
One thing about this book that needs to be mentioned is the large discrepency in value for many pieces between the Warman's guide and Florence's guide. I don't know if this is because this edition is already 3 years old or what. You may feel like you are getting an incredible deal when you are actually not. This book also doesn't contain much information on each pattern except for the basics and it doesn't have much good information on reproductions.
This is a great field guide for glass, but it's good to have a back-up, more recent guide for values.
Warman's Depression Glass.......2007-02-17
Lovely descriptive book. Found several of my pieces immediately. Will be a great reference book for my collection.
book review.......2006-11-12
this is an excellent book. received it promptly and in new condition.
This is the best field guide I've ever seen.......2006-02-17
I love this book and recommend it to any collector of depression glass, especially if you are anovice. The thumbnail guides are easy to use and great for identifying just about any pattern. This has become my bible for identifying and valuing auction buys and yard sale finds. I hope Warmans considers another volume to acccomodate some of the patterns not covered in detail in this book.
I use it all the time!!!.......2003-12-20
I purchased this book about 3 months ago and have almost worn the cover off of it already. I like the thumbnails in the beginning of the book that help you quickly identify the pattern. Although the photos are in black and white, I feel that I am able to identify the patterns quite easily. It is also small enough to fit into my purse or coat pocket when I go to auctions. I think I am getting a much better grasp of various patterns by using this book. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a take-along book. I would also recommend having accesss to Warman's regular edition of Depression Glass for further reference.

Warman's "Depression Glass" 2nd edition.......2005-09-17
This publication is very useful to me because I am a beginner collector and it contains the information needed to identify true depression glass pieces.
Much easier to us to identify patterns.......2005-03-07
This is the second book I have purchased on depression glass. The first was the book by Gene Florence. This book is much easier to see the designs. It has a shape guide that is very helpful as well as a box on each pattern with a black and white illustration of the pattern of the plate. If you just buy one book on depression glass, this should be it.

As someone who is always looking for the right price and a good value, I was extremely pleased with the purchase of this book. The author provides you with a wealth of detail, including prices, that will be a great resource when making the rounds of shows and antique markets. Most of all, I like the down-to-earth approach of this book. The author uses humor and plain language, which makes it enjoyable to read.
