The dazzling epic of The Banned and the Banished has established James Clemens as an exciting new voice in fantasy fiction. Now his remarkable skills reach their peak with Wit'ch Gate, as one girl remains her realm's only hope against the forces of darkness . . . In a spectacular feat of daring and magic, Elena and her army of outlaws and rebels have defeated evil's minions and released the mystic secrets of the Blood Diary. But the malevolent Dark Lord has unleashed the Weirgates-black wells of ferocious energy that are his greatest source of power. Now Elena's bravest allies are sent to find and destroy the Gates, as windships carry the fight north to the frigid woodlands, south to the burning desert sands, and east to the blasted regions of dread Gul'gotha. Along the way, they will face their own personal demons as well. The twin brothers Mogweed and Fardale race against time to break the curse that has stolen their shapechanging birthright, and Elena's brother Joach must evade the desert sandsharks if he is to master his own elemental power. The trail will lead them even to the fabulous el'vin homeland of Stormhaven. None of the rebels will come back unscathed, some never returning at all . . . And Elena herself must journey to Gulgotha. Daring the enemy's own lair, she must emerge victorious if she is to reveal the secret of the Dark Lord's frightening identity-and the shocking nature of his vast powers.

This is a well written story line. I look forward to continuing to follow the ride to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Man, he can't turn it off.......2006-07-01

The author can't quite making me fall in love with the characters in his book. He paints the most amazing world in you mind that you wish that you lived there. A real joy to read.

3 out of 5 stars the next to last.......2005-02-03

The fourth installment of the Banned and the Banished series, Wit'ch Gate continues the chronicles of Elena and her support staff on the quest to save the world from doom.
The feeling of familiarity with the plot increases with this book and it's very predictable hills and vales. Small skirmishes leading up to a large battle which concludes in the last chapter leaving us, Elena and her motley band of mis-matched heros with hope.

During the course of this novel, Clemens' plot twists and revelations take on a more desperate note... almost as if throwing in the kitchen sink seemed like a good idea at the time to save an unraveling plot.

Don't get me wrong, the novel was still engaging and I look forward to reading the last of the series, but the predictability of the storyline really shines in this installment.

The action sequences (which make up the bulk of the book) seem rote and rehearsed in contrast to the earlier novels which had a fresh and unscripted feel to them.

I very well may be more jaded than other readers since I've read this series in rapid succession. I suspect the speed with which I've torn through the novels makes them more prone to revealing their similarities.

I am glad that the story will come to an end with the next book, and hope that it's crafted with a little more care than this installment. Although if it stood alone, this would be an excellent fantasy novel, within the framework of the rest of the series it simply can't hold up.

Still an exciting, interesting read, though less so than the others.

3 out of 5 stars worst of the series.......2003-07-31

I read with relish the first books in this series. Unfortunately, the further into the story, the worse it got. The first book was engaging, partly because it was so naive, but by the last book it seemed the reader was having a tired plot rehashed over and over again without the benefit of gifted writing to make it bearable. I would recommend the first three books to someone wanting light fantasy, but I would leave out the last two.

                5 out of 5 stars Wit'ch Gate.......2002-03-13

The book is about a teenaged white girl - Elena who realizes at her 14 birthday that she is a witch. The farmer's daughter cannot understand what is happening to her but before she can sit down to think, she is pushed into the real world. Away from the shelter of her family farm, she realizes that people are sometimes the most disgusting creatures. Along the way, she meets interesting characters like a man who is missing his right arm, a forest nymph, ogre, two werewolves that are stuck one as a man and another as a wolf, an elf and a mountain giant. This bunch of misfits get together for one reason or another and realize that they have a common aim and that is to make the world a better place by defeating the dark lord. This book is a very interesting read and in this particular book, Elena finally figures out what the dark lord is like and what he is planning to do. Tol'Chuck gets the shock of his life and Kral and the bunch who trooped of with the Dro captian - Tyrus, finally manage to fulfil their destinies. This book also features Joach's unending struggle with the dark magik and something horrible happenes to him. On the other hand a new character is introduced in this episode.
James Clemens is Truly a wonderful author and his stories drag you into the book, and with every page you read, you get dragged further into the world of Alasea. I never want the story to end.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Part Of The Best Novellas And Long Novelettes.......2007-07-21

This is the "Science Fiction Hall of Fame" (Volume IIB), edited by Ben Bova; the second half of the second volume. This volume was published in 1973, and as with the Volume I, there were a set of criteria for which stories were selected. In this case the stories that were voted on had to be published prior to 1966, and there could be no more than one entry per author, although this limitation did not exclude authors who were published in Volume I, but was a limitation within Volume II itself. Both volumes IIA and IIB are for works which are longer novelettes and novellas, i.e. stories of more than 15,000 words. Volume I was arranged in chronological order of when the stories were published, but each of the Volume II books are arranged alphabetically by author within each sub-volume.

Not surprisingly, with the longer stories, there is a shorter table of contents than for Volume I, with just 11 stories each in Volume IIA and IIB. But what maybe lacking in quantity is made up for in quality, with such stories as:

                    * The Martian Way by Isaac Asimov - novella
                    * Earthman, Come Home by James Blish - novelette
                    * Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys - novella
                    * The Specter General by Theodore R. Cogswell - novella
                    * The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster - novelette
                    * The Midas Plague by Frederik Pohl - novella
                    * The Witches of Karres by James H. Schmitz - novelette
                    * E for Effort by T. L. Sherred - novelette
                    * In Hiding by Wilmar H. Shiras - novelette
                    * The Big Front Yard by Clifford D. Simak - novella
                    * The Moon Moth by Jack Vance - novella

Actually, there is nothing lacking in quantity here either, as this sub-volume is over 550 pages, as was the first sub-volume.

This volume, taken as a whole, does a little better job of balancing out the different eras of Science Fiction than Volume I did. At the same time, the quality of the collection remains at the highest level, with classic stories from start to finish. In addition to the stories themselves, there is an introduction by Ben Bova, but it is the same introduction that was included in Volume IIA. One could argue over whether or not there were other stories which should have been considered, but clearly every story here is very good and worthy of consideration.

I was disappointed to discover that the man who wrote this book is not a Zen Buddhist, but a Christian. Though he is a Chinese scholar of Zen, it seems his understanding is filtered through his relationship with Christianity, hence the long forward by the author's good friend Thomas Merton trying to show some similarities between Zen and Christianity. I suppose this would have been a great book to have when it was published 40 years ago or so, but really there are so many better books available now which show a greater understanding and realization of Zen practice than this one. I would spend your money elsewhere.

In the introduction to Relax, Company's Coming! author Kathy Gunst confesses that she entered adulthood thinking of parties as "torturous exercises that always ended with a sink full of dishes and extreme exhaustion by the host." Many people share that sentiment. You plan, you clean, and you spend days slaving over a menu you hope will impress your guests. But, in the end, you're a nervous wreck and your friends feel like a burden. Fortunately, Gunst shows that it doesn't have to be this way. After all, the reason to give a party is to spend time with people you care about. A good host, Gunst explains, isn't necessarily someone who spends a lot of money or dedicates three days to cooking the perfect meal. A good host is one who makes you feel welcome, relaxed, and a part of his or her life. Gunst's recipes are designed to help you do just that.

The recipes are divided into four chapters: "Appetizers," "Casual Parties," "Celebrations," and "Desserts." Most are easy to prepare, and many, like Orange-Marinated Olives or Spanish Potato and Pepper Tortilla, can be made ahead of time. Others, like Sautéed Fresh Figs with Pancetta or Red Caviar Dip, take only minutes to prepare. Casual party fare ranges from homey Pork Chops with Caramelized Apples and Onions to an exotic African Chicken, Spinach, and Peanut Stew. Desserts--from shockingly easy-to-prepare Seven Layer Bars to the more elaborate Birthday Meringues with Chocolate Sauce--are all festive enough for any occasion.

Gunst includes lots of helpful tips--including how to stock the pantry so you can always whip something up spur of the moment, tips for supplementing menus with items from gourmet shops, and creative ways to set a festive table using household items. While she does include a section with 20 suggested menus for variously themed parties (Springtime, East Meets West, Cocktail Party, Dessert Party, among them), menu-planning tips are puzzlingly absent throughout the body of the book. The book will provide plenty of great ideas for what to serve at your next event, but it's not a comprehensive guide to entertaining. --Robin Donovan

                        Book Description

If you are intimidated by the thought of entertaining, help has arrived. Kathy Gunst's Relax, Company's Coming! shows you how to enjoy your guests, with easy-to-follow recipes and a new, stress-free definition of what it means to entertain.

With family and friends on the go, everyday shared meals may be a thing of the past, but in an attempt to make up for lost time, today's get-togethers often become an exercise in trying to achieve perfection. While other books have fed this frenzy with entertaining advice from millionaires, movie stars, and fashion designers, Relax, Company's Coming! gets back to the basics, whether you're planning an elegant dinner party or inviting neighbors for an impromptu brunch. Beginning with an entertaining primer, Gunst shows you how a well-stocked pantry can make planning and cooking for guests easier. There are 150 delicious dishes to treat your guests, from nibbles like Orange-Marinated Olives and Red Caviar Dip, a selection of easy-to-prepare recipes for casual entertaining like Rigatoni in Creamy Walnut-Pea Sauce and Grilled Flank Steak with Fresh Corn-Tomato-Basil Sauté, more elaborate foods for celebration dining, like Prosciutto-Wrapped Asparagus Bundles with Garlic Butter and Roast Swordfish with Horseradish-Thyme Sauce, and of course, a selection of desserts from fruity (Honeyed Bananas) to deeply chocolatey (Three-Layer Mint Brownies). You'll also find delicious pantry meals, recipes for one-pan dinners, ways to enhance your menu with store-bought treats, ideas for transforming leftovers into meals, recipes for instant desserts, and suggestions for creative table settings using household items you already have on hand. There are menus for special gatherings, including cocktail parties, a birthday bash, vegetarian meals, and a dessert buffet. There's even a section on potluck parties, with tips to make your own event go smoothly, as well as suggestions for dishes that travel well.

Relax, Company's Coming! is your passport to successful, stress-free entertaining.

This is geared to those who don't like or have the time to prepare the more exotic dishes, which take some more time to shop and prepare.

150 recipes are gathered here with that in mind, to have a pantry of items and recipes around to prepare flavorful, good food for company.

Stuffed Turkish Peppers, Roast Duck with Thyme-Honey Mango Sauce, Braised Lamb Shanks with five Onions are indicative of the wide variety of dishes offered.

Although this is adequate and even as the above recipe selections show some creativity, most of these are not what I choose to serve for company, even if rushed. Try severel others which I think show more creativity and thought put in to your entertaining: "Fast Food For Friends" by Lewis Esson; "Food for Friends" by Fran Warde, and "New Fast Food" by Donna Hay.

The focus here is as much on the entertainer enjoying time with guests as with presentations which look lavish and elegant but require little last-minute work. The key is to stocking a pantry well: over a hundred dishes based on such a pantry are presented in a title which lacks color photos but includes many easy tips and appetizing dishes.

Love to have the company, but hate the mess, time and preparation? If that is the case, then this book is for you. It is an absolute delight and life saver. The African Chicken, and the Pork Chops with Caramelized Apples and Onions are simply Devine! These recipes will taste like you spent the whole day in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove, when, in fact, they take minimum time and effort. You will really begin to feel like your guests are a pleasure, rather than a burden which ties you to the kitchen for hours on end. If you have the time to spend in the kitchen then you probably enjoy your hours of labour, but for those of us who never seem to have enough hours in a day, this book can be a salvation. There are some absolutely scrumptious recipes contained among the pages, so buy the book, relax, banish the kitchen blues, and enjoy your company...and the fruits of your labour!

4 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide for the Novice Collector.......2007-10-04

Glass paperweights, particularly those of the millefiori style are fascinating and in real terms are a recent addition to the glass making art. In fact they really only started to be made in any numbers in the mid 19th century, making their product span only a little more than a 150 years. When one considers that the ancient Romans and Egyptians had solved the problem of making glass over 2,000 years ago, it puts the time scale of glass paperweights into perspective.

A book on the subject is a must for the novice, or any other collector for that matter, as many of the earlier paperweights have nothing to aid the collector in establishing which factory they come from. How does one tell an old paperweight from a relatively new one. Well, experience and looking at as many different weights as possible, either in the flesh, so to speak or good quality photographs is the only way to get a `feel' for the different factories.

Some paperweights do in fact have `signatures.' Later Perthshire paperweights usually have a cane, normally in the centre of the weight with a P on it. Some of John Deacons weights have a cane with a thistle emblem and so on. The canes are the small coloured pieces of glass that are set into the base of millefiori paperweights.

This particular book covers the main factories of France, Scotland and the US. Some of the makers marks or the labels they place on their products are shown and full colour photographs of more than 150 weights are shown. The book also tells the beginner what to look out for when purchasing paperweights. If I may throw my own two penny worth here, like many things condition is everything. Small surface marks can be polished out but bruises (where the weight has been knocked, or dropped are difficult and sometimes impossible to remove). If you simply want the weight as a decorative piece of glass, these things are acceptable, but if you are trying to get a worthwhile collection together leave these pieces alone.

3 out of 5 stars Out of date and poorly photographed.......2006-11-27

This was a fine book in its day, but has been overshadowed by larger books with both better research and finer photography.

1 out of 5 stars Just an uninspiring picture book and nothing more useful.......2004-08-28

If you're looking for lasting decorating ideas, look elsewhere. If you want to wanly leaf through a coffee table picture book and read brief captions, borrow this from the library. The book is not formatted to inspire, it was created to showcase Andrew Wood's photography, and a name was added to the book: Stephanie Hoppen, whomever she may be. Isolating chapters include Easter Celebrations, Spring Flowers, a chapter on White Foods (!!!)... Shame on all involved in this unethical money-making venture.

If you're looking for great decorating ideas, this is a pretty nice book, BUT, it also has pictures of flowers and food, so it's not wall-to-wall decorating. There are no earth-shattering decor revelations here, but if you collect books to flip though to get ideas, or just love looking at pretty things, this one's not too shabby.

The authors took their subject seriously. They considered it as theme that had to be illustrated long various style-lifes and types of architecture. You will find a different point of view with Julia Bird and Pia Tryde "The simple home". In this other book, style is uniform, yet wonderful and easy to get inspiration from. White on white is a powerful concept well illustrated. This book will please everyone.

I really enjoyed this book. It is the right size and length for a decorating book and is more diverse than other all "white" decorating books I have read in the past. The styles range from classic to contemporary with a little flea market chic thrown in...

                            5 out of 5 stars A Touching Look At A Michigan Institution.......1999-03-25

As one of thousands of Michigander's who considered listening to JP synonymous with driving to work, I found the contents fascinating. Learning about his family background and the "story" behind many of his on air trevails that I heard live at the time brought back many fond memories. The touching commentaries and insights by his friends only serve to reinforce the fact that Detroit and the State of Michigan lost one of their treasures with his passing.
