Book Description
This autobiography in stories takes us through a most remarkable life, from the innocence of prewar Prague through the horrors of the Nazi occupation and World War II. In the title story, narrated by Skvorecky’s alter-ego Danny Smiricky, seven-year-old Danny falls in love for the first time; at sixteen he hides in a railway station and watches as his Jewish teacher is herded onto a train and taken away; and in 1968, as Russian tanks rolled into Prague, vSkvoreck´y flees Czechoslovakia, taking Danny with him. In the collection’s final stories, Danny begins his tenure as Professor Smiricky at a Canadian university and attempts to come to terms with the politically innocent and self-centered youth that flock to his courses.

A life in short stories.......2007-02-24
This is an excellent introduction to Josef Skvorecky's work; one glimpses his brilliant humor and heartbreaking honesty in these short stories. One really must read "The Engineer of Human Souls," but if you want to get a sense of his style before diving into a book the length of "The Engineer" this is an great place to start.

Mythic and Magical Art.......2007-07-16
As one of the foremost fantasy illustrators of the past twenty years Canadian born John Howe has done more to define the look of Tolkien's world than almost any other illustrator apart from Alan Lee. He captures in vibrant and dramatic images the grandeur and majesty of Middle Earth, in calendars and on book covers alike. But he is much more than just a visual interpreter of Tolkien's work, getting his big break in Time Life's: The Enchanted World series in the 1980s his art has graced the covers of some of the bestselling fantasy authors of today. He has illustrated books on myth, legend and fairy tale; he's even written and illustrated several enchanting children's books.
His magical art for the book: A Diversity of Dragons or his book on medieval armour with its complex and detailed illustrations has cemented his already well earned reputation. John Howe also occasionally tries his hand at science fiction illustration, but only when he gets the chance. Though of course and with good reason he is mainly famous for his work exploring fantasy, myth, legend, folklore and fairytale. This book is a stunning portfolio of some of the most significant and beautiful masterpieces that have marked his career thus far, and an exploration of what inspires him (like ravens or horse-shoe crabs) as an artist.
With revealing commentary from some of the people he has collaborated with over the years this insightful volume explains why he is so sought after as a fantasy illustrator. There is even a fascinating chapter on his passion and hobby, creating medieval arms & armour for a re-enactment society in Switzerland, where he also lives. While many of the pictures are a bit on the small side and hence fail to do justice to his art, and I also think the text is a bit thin... one can't really complain. As one of my favourite modern illustrators I was very pleased when this long overdue book was finally published, now for one on Alan Lee!
myth and magic.......2007-05-13
i recommend this book not only to fantasy art lovers but also to tokien fans, since most of the movie costumes and scenery were inspired by john howe's piantings

Does Justice To The Artist.......2005-01-18
This book shows how it should be done.
If you had to condense decades of brilliant art work into one volume this is about right.
It is obvious that the volume was put together with love. The paper and color are good, and the pictures (why most of us want to buy this book), are many, varied and quite often large.
** (Lesson for "Realms of Tolkien" editor: There are many double and single page spreads, with no white space!)
For the person who wants to know about John Howe, (not just his Tolkien work), there is quite a bit of information, although I would have liked to have seen and read more about the technical side of how he works.
There is quite a bit of his non-Tolkien work, which I found really interesting and just as good, (artistically) as his Tolkien stuff.
If you like the work of John Howe this is the book for you!
The only way to improve it would be to add another volume, (hint to the editor...).
Now if they could just do the same thing for Ted Nasmith...
Simply Fantastic.......2004-03-01
If you haven't got this book yet and you are into fantasy art, don't hesitate and buy it. Trully fantastic artwork. John Howe is without a doubt one of the best illustrators of the world. He was one of the concept artists of Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings movie trilogy.
Book Description
Contained in a high quality decorative folder, complete with background information, the six pictures selected here - many not seen before - are examples of Howe's dramatic artwork taken from his portfolio "A Tolkien Gallery".
Book Description
The similarity between the Navajo and Tibetan spiritual traditions has often been remarked upon by scholars chiefly because of the mandala sand paintings common to both cultures, their ideas about matter and spirit, and their uncanny physical resemblance to one another. Author Peter Gold substantiates the shared knowledge of these seemingly disparate people by drawing extensive parallels among many aspects of both cultures: creation myths, cosmology, geomancy, psychology, visionary arts, and healing and initiation rituals. Through his sensitive comparison of Navajo and Tibetan sacred ways, the author encourages us to reconsider our own cultural paradigms and shows us how we might begin to recover a sense of the sacred.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting comparison.......2005-12-29
This book compares the similarities between Tibetian and Navaho wisdom. Interesting and compelling, and somewhat challenging to follow in a few places. Well made case!
A somewhat difficult but enlightening presentation........1999-02-21
This book is a somewhat difficult but enlightening comparison of navaho and tibetan world views. Mr. Gold bounces back and forth between these two views and gives a taste but does not always deliver the whole dish. His desire to unite these two worldviews frequently does not do justice to his navaho material and ends up a times confusing. I did enjoy the book for its appendices, often finding them more informative than the text. I would like to see this author write a more through book on navaho worldview. He appears to know more and understand more than he shares in this book.

Book Description
The design revolutions of the early 20th century were woven into the very fabric of the carpets and rugs of that era. Art Deco and Modernist Carpets, the first in-depth history, charts the evolution of carpet design out of the floral effusions of the Victorian salons and into the angular elegance of Art Deco and bold abstraction of Modernism popularized by the machine age. Such artists and designers as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Matisse, Klee, and many more advanced the designs going on underfoot, making these rugs extremely collectible artworks in their own right. Generously sized and beautifully illustrated with over 250 full-color photographs, here are Art Deco and Modernist carpets at their most glorious.

Covering new ground.......2002-11-06
I am biased, Moholy Nagy, Joseph Albers and Johannes Itten and their cohorts at the Bauhaus left an indelible mark on my artist's soul. When I saw this book I actually two-steppped a little jig for joy. The application of modernist patterns to this fiberous, color-satuating medium is in many ways a perfect example of the Weimar/Dessau ethos: " form will always follow function", is still a very pertinant, clear, and vibrant idelogy. The beautifully printed photos of the carpets are worth the price of the book, as they serve as excellent sources of inspiration and study. The book's design is well-thought out and allows the fabrics and weavings to come alive on the pages. It is a fortunate thing that younger talented, art historians like Ms. Day are allowing themselves and their readers the pleasure of rediscovering the wealth and elegance of Modernist ideas as a healing antiodote to our current age of mass art confusion.

Customer Reviews:
Better off with one of the older Entourage books.......2004-03-24
Though advertised as a "modern" people are drawn very roughly and facial features are especially strange looking (no character at all). The general range of poses, styles, kinds of people, etc are just as generic and out-of-date as the older Entourage and clip-art books that came out decades ago. Will some one please make a comprehensive, easy to use, clip-art book for contemporary designers?!! This one just doesn't cut it.

Customer Reviews:
Too Loud.........2005-07-10
Do you see the little preview image of the cover? The entire book is like that. It's LOUD. It's IN YOUR FACE. It's MAXIMUM PAGE DESIGN. Frankly I found the layout of the book so distracting that I had a hard time even noticing the content; there are too many heavy/bright/bold elements competing for attention. Perhaps this is just a personal preference, but I love it when my design collections let the designs speak for themselves (with perhaps gentle nudging through subdued captions). Still, I'm sure the author of this book put his heart into compiling these pieces, and people who respond better to visual overload may find the content engaging. And the designs presented really ARE good, which is the reason why I feel compelled to give this book at least an average ranking.

Sitting by the hearth.......2005-12-21
There is something quite touching about this collection of columns. It could be this: they call to mind a gentler, more whimsical time when civility and community mattered. Guy Friddell is a gentleman, now in his 80s, who for decades has written columns for the Virginian Pilot. With a whismy that seems a special talent of Virginians, he writes about Jackie Kennedy, Memorial day, Christmas, the beauty of nature, and even his own travails, often laced with self mocking humor. To read him is to feel at home, in front of a warm fire, chatting with a man who was -- is -- comfortable with his place in the world. His easy grace will contrast with the meanness that has come to define too much of our culture. This book will offer a needed respite to those wearied by a world too cynical by half.
