"With plenty of Yankee common sense and dry wit, and some pathos as the boy at 13 takes on the duties of a man. For boys of this age and for the young of any age."--School Library Journal.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every minute.......2007-10-08

What an eye opener for this generation! Welcome to the Shaker tradition of plain, earthy, reason. No frills. Where a man's word is second to his deed. I found this novel to be inspiring and humbling. Nowadays, we take so much for granted! Here is a family who earns or makes everything they have, and is gracious enough to consider themselves rich. Indeed they are - rich in faith, love, dignity, integrity, and community.
This is an important coming of age novel for many reasons. Robert Peck has to face challenges that many Young Adult readers face: increased responsibility, the wanting of worldly possessions, and death.

I read this to my boys when they were young. We laughed and laughed. And then cried a little.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-08-15

not for the faint of heart, I suppose, after reading some of the other reviews on this site. But hey, life is tough, and this book shows how one father prepared his son to survive and flourish. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, sometimes painful, but hey, so is life. Even for kids. .......2007-04-12

I read this book when I twelve. It was not assigned reading from school; my aunt had a copy, and I helped myself. When I finished, I gave my aunt back her book and never read it again. I didn't have to. It was a part of me.
I lived the days of the story with Robert. Yes, some are country-slow, but they are richly described and absorbing, even when relating trivialities. (Think "To Kill a Mockingbird".)
I was horrified (as was Robert, the boy who is the main character) at the bloody images of the dog and weasel, but what *stayed* with me afterwards was the remorse of the dog's owner, and his declaration that, conventional wisdom be damned, he would never "weasel" a dog again. A clear lesson in self-determination in the face of tradition, more forceful because it was a grown man making the mistake and painfully learning from it.
Robert's visceral reaction to his pet being violently bred made him more real in my eyes, more vulnerable, and his bitter sense of filial obligation in cooperating with the process made me empathize even more. It's a tricky, sometimes powerless place, being that young.
But interwoven through the plainly portrayed harshness and casual brutality of rural poverty is the still beauty and serenity of a farm family in the 30's. The quiet father, who butchers hogs by hand, carves his son a whistle with the greatest care.
I don't know what the target age for readers of this story is. I have seven and nine year old daughters. I won't give it to them yet, but I think in two or three years I'll be adding it to their library. I was actually shopping for a copy to give to a grown-up friend. We had been talking about books that had made us cry.

5 out of 5 stars True, Fascinating Story .......2007-02-26

Every boy dreams about owning their own animal. Robert Peck's dream comes true when he receives a pig for helping a neighbor, but while growing up in a Shaker household he can't afford to do many things. By getting Pinky, his pig, he is able to experience things he has never done before. Amidst all the fun, Robert needs to become a man, and learn what it takes to do so.

2 out of 5 stars A Day No Pigs Would Die Review.......2002-11-01

After reading this book, I would reccomend this book for teens. In my opinion, this book was very amusing! The most amusing part to me was when Rob was at the Rutland Fair looking for perverts. I also think that this book was very easy to relate to since I'm a teenager and I know what Rob was going through. I have troble in school just like Rob did in Laungeuge Arts when he got a "D". This book had very good dialect that went along with he book. It made the book more interesting and kept me reading. Therefore, I would like to reccomend this book to all who enjoy the "Comming of Age" theme in books and literature.

5 out of 5 stars 5+ Stars - Excellent Book and Excellent Series.......2004-03-13

Excellent Series - This is the third novel in Tanya Huff's excellent vampire series. This book and the entire series gets 5+ stars. It's excellent! (If you have not read the entire series, you must read it, you will not be disappointed. The series order: Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact and Blood Debt).

This third book continues with Vicki, an ex cop turned private investigator, who had to leave the police force because she is losing her night vision. From previous novels you met Henry, a 400 year old vampire who is also a romantic writer, and Vicki's friend and lover. Also, you met Mike, Vicki's ex-partner, who is also involved with Vicki.

This third novel begans with Henry. Once Henry became a vampire he stopped having dreams. Suddenly Henry is dreaming again, and the dreams are slowly driving him mad. He is dreaming of the sun, and very afraid. He does not know if he is losing his mind, or if this is signaling his upcoming death. He calls Vicki for help.

At the same time Mike is working on a weird case involving two deaths at a museum both involving heart failure. This seems strange to Mike. As he contnues the investigation, he realizes something not quite human may be causing these deaths. Mike asks Vicki for help, and soon it will take Mike, Henry and Vicki working together to keep more people from dying. Also there are complications with all three of them working together because the two men are becoming jealous of each other as their attraction to Vicki grows.

                  Excellent excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Finally getting some meat in the story.......2003-12-13

Unlike the first two, this book holds your interest well. The sniping of the love triangle is minimized and the characters finally develop. The sex is part of the story, but it isnt THE story.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2003-08-30

I was really getting into this "Blood" series, but this book really slowed me down. It lacked the action the others in this series had. Most of all, the hero is really getting on my nerve. She is way to angry and selfish.

                  4 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2003-04-23

Quick pace, easy to read book. It keeps you entertained and interested from beginning to end. Recommend for people who like vampires but not the give you nightmares type of horror some writers insist on.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Read in an Enthralling Series!.......2002-11-20

"Blood Lines" by Tanya Huff is the third instalment in her wonderful "Blood" series, and it is another great read. It contains a thrilling and suspenseful plot perfectly blended with the tantalizing love triangle between Private Investigator Vicki Nelson, 450 year-old vampire romance writer Henry Fitzroy, and homicide detective Mike Celluci. "Blood Lines" is an excellent addition to the series and is sure to be widely enjoyed.

The story begins with the arrival of an Egyptian sarcophagus at the Royal Ontario Museum. The staff is excited about what and who it may contain, but they don't know the half of it. For the mummy lying inside is an ancient Egyptian wizard who challenged the gods at the height of his power and was subsequently entombed alive. For thousands of years he has lain in darkness, unable to escape his living death, until now.

Strange and frightening things begin happening at the museum after the sarcophagus is opened and the mummy uncovered. Two men die sudden and inexplicable deaths and then the entire museum staff selectively forgets that there ever was a mummy. Because the ancient wizard, now awake and planning his overthrow of the city and the reinstatement of his dark god's reign, has been growing stronger by feeding on the lives of those around him. Armed with knowledge of the 20th century stolen from his victims, the mummy takes the name Anwar Tawfik and goes out into the city. And so this ancient evil is loosed upon an unsuspecting Toronto.

Mike Celluci, Vicki Nelson's ex-partner on the force and sometime lover, can see that something is not right. He finds clues at the museum that deny the statements given by the museum staff, and after the things he's seen in the recent past, Mike's willing to believe in a supernatural explanation. Henry Fitzroy, Vicki's other lover and the bastard son of Henry VIII, no less, is haunted by dreams of a blazing desert sun. And being a vampire, this is pretty terrifying for Henry, who believes that his recurring dream signifies some hidden desire to commit suicide. So Henry enlists Vicki's help to watch over him and keep him from frying himself, and Mike recruits her to help him find out what is going on.

As Tawfik becomes more and more powerful, he gains control of some people in high places, leaving Vicki, Mike, and Henry to fight him all alone. And it's not long before the clues, Henry's instincts, and some blind luck add up to give these three a fairly accurate picture of what's going on. Tawfik is so power hungry that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, and his plans include a ceremony that will make him almost unstoppable.

So it's up to Vicki, Mike, and Henry to find a way to stop Tawfik and save Toronto. The suspense builds very effectively, and Huff takes her readers on a thrilling adventure. "Blood Lines" is intriguing, tightly plotted, and exciting. Not to mention the fabulous romance between Henry and Vicki (my favourite couple) and Mike and Vicki, which provides some intense sexual tension along with some highly amusing moments that balance the horror and suspense perfectly.

All in all, "Blood Lines" is an entertaining and worthwhile read. Vicki is a fantastic heroine. She's strong and stubborn, but not without vulnerabilities. I adore Henry, and can't help but like Mike. The story is a fascinating mix of horror, mystery, fantasy, and romance and Huff makes it work beautifully. The entire "Blood" series is worth reading, though I strongly advise you read them in order. "Blood Lines" will not disappoint, so pick it up today and enjoy!

                    Book Description

Vostok Station, the coldest recorded place on earth, a Russian research facility deep in Antarctica that sits on a dome of ice over 5000 feet deep. A place unique not just because of record cold temperatures but because of what lies beneath the ice, Lake Vostok, a fluid mass larger than Lake Ontario, nearly 2000 feet deep. Renegade Russian and Chinese scientists drill through the ice into the lake, discovering a secret that has been trapped there for millions of years. Compressed by trillions of tons of ice, the lake water is saturated in oxygen and explosive natural gasses. When exposed to low atmospheres, the water instantly boils into gas. Beneath that mix, the earth's crust, stretched by the huge mass of lake and ice, has laid bare the world's largest oil and gas reserve, held in check only by the weight above.

The discovery begins a chain of events that spiral into the biggest massing of military forces seen since the Second World War. And then the unthinkable happens. A blinding flash of light and an enormous electro magnetic pulse rips out from the northeast end of the lake, sealing off Vostok from the rest of the world. The Russians and Chinese blame the U.S.

The event triggers a military race to claim the ice. Amidst this, two brothers, Brian and Lance Hamilton find themselves dragged into the unfolding nightmare.

Colonel Brian Hamilton caught in the electro magnetic pulse, witnesses the annihilation of the Vostok research station from a cruise missile strike and the ignition of the wellhead that begins a count down to dooms day. His escape from the ice centre and pursuing Spetznaz forces enables him to warn the coalition of the approaching Armageddon.

With the entire Antarctic sealed off to the Australian and US forces, it is up to Squadron Leader Lance Hamilton to devise a strategy that will get him and his Pig, the venerable F111, close enough to extinguish the flame. The burning well head quickly creates a hole over four hundred meters wide which rapidly sinks towards the lake of oil and gas below.

In a growing conflict that debuts weaponry never utilized in battle before, the Russians, Chinese, Australian and US forces punch it out on the ice and Southern Ocean, each believing they are fighting the just cause. But for all of them, the ticking bomb at the end of the Earth threatens the extinction of all life. Brian and Lance Hamilton find themselves flung together in a desperate last minute attempt to avert a catastrophe of biblical proportions.

                    5 out of 5 stars A gem of a book.......2000-06-14

A tour de force. Corrigan manages to provide literary, historical, mythological themes and contexts that illuminate current practice and belief.I found the details of this book enlarged my understanding of why and how these religions have many common strains and where they depart from one another. It also explains how the traditions of each, along with the practice, ethics and politics keep each vital enough in different countries and changing times to keep them going. A very weighty and multidimensional subject written with much grace. It's not only excellent as a reference book, it also holds up as a fascinating read.

                                      Book Description

The P-47 Thunderbolt, affectionately nicknamed the ‘Jug’, was one of the most famous fighter aircraft of World War II. Used as both a high-altitude escort fighter and a low-level fighter-bomber, it quickly gained a reputation for being tough and resilient. Many different air forces operated this plane, and it sported a wide range of camouflage schemes, finishes and markings, including stunning nose art. Modellers have been well served with Thunderbolt kits over the years, right up to the latest highly accurate releases. This book takes a step-by-step approach to modelling a wide variety of P-47 types in 1/48-scale, from ‘Razorbacks’ in USAAF colours to RAF T-bolts in the Far East. It provides expert advice on conversions (including a Bubbletop to a P-47M), adding aftermarket items, detailing, and ways to achieve top quality weathering and finishes.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading title, excercise caution........2004-09-26

The book title is misleading. The title should include"....in 1/48 Scale." That is the only scale this Vol. in the Osprey Modeling series addresses. There is no mention of any of the other scale kits on the market. With this said, if you enjoy building one quarter scale "Jugs", you might rate this book higher that I did. The book outlines almost step by step building of all the currently popular 1/48 scale kits. There is little discussion of which kits are the best, but once chosen for the project the flaws of that kit are pointed out for correction. This includes sanding down the raised wing sections of the Academy 47D kit. I don't know about you, but my inclination is to start with a better kit. Yes, there are good model construction instructions to follow and learn from but you can get a lot of these ideas from other how to books.

                                      Book Description

Showering outdoors after a day of playing in the surf, digging in the garden, or taking a daylong bike ride is the ultimate in summer relaxation.

Designer/builder Ethan Fierro celebrates the creativity and whimsical inspiration of summer with this collection of original outdoor shower designs he’s uncovered from coast to coast. He offers dozens of examples for homeowners to choose from, all pictured in stunning color photographs, ranging from the simple showerhead on the side of the cottage, to semi-detached and freestanding structures. Accompanying text describes the design and material elements involved in each example.

Beginning with the basics, Fierro includes an overview of basic plumbing and structural requirements, along with suggestions for incorporating a wide range of building materials, including stone, wood, metal, frosted glass blocks, earth, concrete, tile, stucco, and landscape vegetation. His plans are environmentally sound and mindful of cost-saving techniques, with ideas for repurposing found and recycled materials.

Fierro exhibits his own inspired aesthetic in the final chapter with illustrated plans for six fantasy showers, including a tree house, a vineenclosed frame, a stained-glass nautilus, and an underground cavity with a hole for sky-viewing. The Outdoor Shower will set free the inner spirit—and the inner builder—of any summer-home owner.

2 out of 5 stars not very creative.......2002-12-15

With the word creative in the title I was expecting a more original style of decorating, or at least a broader range of styles. Instead, the style of this book is primarily tradional/cosmopolitan. I do not like that style, so that is probably why I don't like this book. I found it rather boring. The photos are not too bad, but nothing special. I have to admit I was too turned off by the photos to bother reading much of the text, so perhaps the written information would be more useful to people, but I doubt it. Two other definitely more useful books would be The Kitchen Planner and Better Homes and Gardens Complete Kitchens. I reccomend that you skip this book.

This book is a wonderful design book. The photos are inspiring and show a broad range of modern and welcoming styles. The text accompanying them is very straightforward and details what limitations or problems the design overcame. It is difficult to imagine that the rooms will become dated - they appear to be very fresh, sensuous and appealing. I was able to take some ideas from various rooms and incorporate into my place. This book is very inspirational and allows one to view work of top designers and architects not readily accessible to the public.

If you're new to interior design or need a good book to keep as a reference - this is a good buy. Neatly laid out (in small print and double spaced), easy to understand with full coloured pictures, this book explains all the basics. For example, it explains the difference between contemporary and traditional design for each of the rooms highlighted and how to use colour and texture effectively. Function is also considered - as in the section on kitchens. Here 'Kitchens to eat in' and 'Kitchens to relax in' are two of the headings. In the section on bathrooms, there is information on 'Special needs' and 'Dual purpose' baths. The drawback is that if you're looking for new ideas, only a few are found as most of the rooms pictured are not practical, so ideas have to be picked from here and there. Also, the wide range of topics covered means that less depth of information is available although the most important points are mentioned. I also found that some of the pictures should have been taken at a wider angle to give a better effect of the whole room instead of just focusing on one aspect of design.

                                                      Book Description

This highly original work is about the spatial imagination as it has manifested itself in one of the most beautiful and historically important cities in the world. The subject is not the buildings, trees, and rivers of St. Petersburg, but the spaces between them: space as a conceptual interval, not as emptiness. Emptiness and space are not synonyms, the author argues. One way or another, space is formed and shaped into a structure that can be perceived, but emptiness has no distinct articulation or content.

Interpreting the unique space of Petersburg since its founding in Russian and Soviet art, this richly illustrated book analyzes the changes of "spatial conception" that were inwardly linked with the development of Russian culture and that manifested themselves in poetry and prose, in architecture and fashion, in interior design and painting. The author's sources are not only art and belles lettres, but travelers' accounts, fashion magazines, autobiographies and memoirs, popular sketches, and newspapers. The book includes 75 illustrations.

The importance of artistic use of urban space has a long history in Russia. When, during the reign of Catherine II, Russian cities and villages were subjected to complete replanning, this was done not so much to change the style of building as to create a new system of space, enforced by the beautiful lines of streets and squares. The outlines of the spaces of Petersburg would, with only a few exceptions, remain unchanged for over 200 years, while building styles changed three or four times during this period. The imaginative possibilities of Petersburg space remain: even in the dreary Soviet suburbs built in the 1960's, the poetics of Petersburg space are at play.

Enron was a $100-billion-a-year company in October 2001--America's seventh-largest. The Houston-based energy firm enjoyed warm ties with newly installed President George W. Bush. Earnings were up 26 percent from the previous quarter, while Fortune magazine had named Enron the country's most innovative company six years in a row. Less than two months later, Enron filed for bankruptcy in the biggest corporate failure in history. Enron became synonymous with the greed and fraud of the go-go high-tech stock bubble of the late 1990s--the worst of a series of spectacular corporate collapses that also took down WorldCom, Tyco, and Global Crossing.

What went wrong? Veteran New York Times financial journalist Kurt Eichenwald does an epic job of telling Enron's story in his 742-page tome Conspiracy of Fools. Eichenwald, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2000, also authored The Informant, an acclaimed account of a vast international price-fixing scandal at Archer Daniels Midland. Conspiracy of Fools tells the Enron tale with a cinematic narrative style, relying almost exclusively on scene and dialogue to bring his account to vivid life. We see how federal regulators opened the doors for the Enron fraud early on when they let the company loosen up its accounting rules and essentially cook its books. We read how Enron bullied Wall Street firms into issuing favorable reports about its share price by threatening to take away lucrative banking fees. Eichenwald also reveals how Enron manipulated electricity prices during the California energy crisis of 2000. Eichenwald's book is less successful in situating the Enron debacle in its wider context--the cycle of market speculation that reached a historic summit in the dot-com bubble. Was Enron just a cautionary sign of the greed and lack of ethics of a few bad apples, or was it more symptomatic of an entire market system? That may be a debate for another book. --Alex Roslin

In 2000, when The Informant was published, few would’ve imagined that a story about price fixing at Archer Daniels Midland could be as un–put–downable as the best crime fiction. Yet critics—and consumers—agreed: The New York Times reporter Kurt Eichenwald had taken the stuff of dry business reporting and turned it into an unparalleled page–turner. With Conspiracy of Fools, Eichenwald has done it again.

Say the name “Enron” and most people believe they’ve heard all about the story that imperiled a presidency, destroyed a marketplace, and changed Washington and Wall Street forever. But in the hands of Kurt Eichenwald, the players we think we know and the business practices we think have been exposed are transformed into entirely new—and entirely gripping—material. The cast includes but is not limited to George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Paul O’Neill, Harvey Pitt, Colin Powell, Gray Davis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alan Greenspan, Ken Lay, Andy Fastow, Jeff Skilling, Bill Clinton, Rupert Murdoch, and Michael Eisner. Providing a you–are–there glimpse behind closed doors in the executive suites of the Enron Corporation, the Texas governor’s mansion, the Justice Department, and even the Oval Office, Conspiracy of Fools is an all–true financial and political thriller of cinematic proportions.

I really enjoyed "Conspiracy of Fools," although it feels as if it only told half of the story about Enron's collapse, ending before the plea deals and convictions of the company's top executives. The book traces the history of the company and its chairman, Ken Lay, describing his early innovations in launching a market for natural gas during a time when the industry was being deregulated. It then describes the rise of company president, Jeff Skilling, a former consultant at McKinsey & Co. and graduate of Harvard Business School, and his role in advancing the career of Andrew Fastow, Enron's CFO. While the book is sympathetic to Lay (portraying him as an unwitting victim of the company's collapse) and less so to Skilling (portraying him as a tortured alcoholic who urged underlyings to cook the company's books to gin up earnings), it portrays Fastow for the crook that he was. Not only was Fastow completely incompetent as a corporate CFO, but he also schemed and schemed and schemed for his personal enrichment, and surrounded his greedy self with other willing participants in his financial machinations (including Michael Kopper and his boyfriend, wife Lea Fastow, treasurer Ben Glisan Jr., chief accounting officer Richard Causey, chief risk officer Richard Buy, executive vice president J. Clifford Baxter, executive Kenneth Rice, and lawyer Kristina Mordaunt). The head of Enron's international group, Rebecca Mark, is portrayed as an incompetent spendthrift. Meanwhile, Arthur Andersen was populated with dunderheads, including David Duncan, who kowtowed to Enron's every wish, and lawyer Nancy Temple, who ordered the mass shredding of Enron-related documents. Merrill Lynch fired its oil analyst, John Olson, because Enron didn't like his stock opinions and wanted Enron's banking business, according to the book. Enron's law firm of Vinson & Elkins appears particularly incompetent and all too willing to assist Enron in cooking its books. Three money-grubbing bankers from Greenwich NatWest, Giles Darby, David Bermingham, and Gary Mulgrew, also participated in a plan to steal money from their company while helping Fastow, according to the book (the three were later extradited to the United States to face a criminal trial).

One of the book's shortcomings is its descriptions of links between Enron executives and members of the Bush administration, as if to suggest that Republicans are somehow implicated in Enron's internal problems. Ultimately, there are no bombshells to report. If anything, the moral vacuousness of Enron's executives has more in common with President Clinton's mendacity and the vapidity of the dot-com and telecom stock bubbles, an age when fantasy completely trumped reality. The Bush administration and U.S. taxpayers were left to clean up the mess.

Eichenwald's book climaxes with the bankruptcy filing of Enron, but the criminal trials of key executives had yet to occur (and Lay died of a heart attack in 1996). Thus, the book feels somewhat anticlimactic.

Another book, "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," is much more critical of Skilling and Lay's managerial shortcomings, whereas "Conspiracy of Fools" is most critical of Fastow and his use of off-balance-sheet special-purpose entities to move debt from Enron's balance sheet and to enrich himself and his coterie of spineless miscreants.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Character List and Complex Issues.......2007-08-04

Without going in to great detail about the book - I am sure we all know it dealt with the collapse of one of corporate Americas' big swingers. The book contained quite a deal of information about events from inside Enron. I guess the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the author had a way of really annoying me by trying to write the book as a novel (in places). I look forward to the movie - hopefully the ending is better for the investors.

4 out of 5 stars How easily the "system" failed........2007-07-28

You will be amazed at how Enron was able to frustrate every check and balance in place in American Finance. The SEC, individual and institutional investors, auditors, lawyers, accountants, rating agencies, banks, creditors, peers, and even insiders were blindsided by a couple of smart but foolhardy executives who were willing to exploit every loophole in the name of manufacturing *profits* (and not products).

All in all a very readable and addictive book.

                                                      5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2007-06-24

I do *not* have a high degree of financial acumen, but this book laid out what was really wrong with Enron in a thoroughly engaging manner. I couldn't put it down, and I finally understand the financial reasons for the collapse, not just managerial incompetence...which was EPIC, by the way.

1 out of 5 stars This review is for the audio cds.......2007-06-16

I borrowed these cds from the library because I'm interested in corporate governance and case studies. I'm not an expert on Enron, but this felt like fiction from the first couple of minutes. When the narrator speaks for Ken Lay, he uses a deep, fatherly voice. Andy Fastow's voice is whiny and child-like. Its content is obviously biased and selective. So from a factual standpoint, I'm not learning a heck of a lot.
As fiction, it's way too long at 25 cds; should be abridged by about 2/3. There's just not that much content, and it's often painful to listen to. If I didn't have a one-hour commute to fill, I'd have given up on it hours ago.
I highly recommend The Smartest Guys in the Room instead.
