5 out of 5 stars A Masterful Portrait That Provokes Thought.......2003-04-15

In the title story of this edition is an excellent example of African penmanship. La Guma captures the surroundings of the story like a fish on a hook and then hands the pole to the reader to reel it in. The story takes place in a South African ghetto devastated by the malevolent European presence. While being tragic the story does not seek pity at all. The story unfolds rapidly and with precise visual detail that allows its 92 pages to be read EASILY in one sitting. The work has been portrayed as hopeless by some of its audience, and it is this I feel that proves the importance of such a great piece of literature. The story does not have a happy ending to console the reader because at the time it was created and published no happy ending had occurred. La Guma wishes to show us the inhumanity that goes on unnoticed by the majority of the world and sometimes merely disregarded on the basis of skin color. People seeing hopelessness in "A Walk in the Night" are hopeless people who would rather be lied to than educated on the True Reality that surrounds them. Why? perhaps it is laziness, change will never come if we are never informed of the truth that humane change relies on. La Guma has done nothing but taken a picture of a group of people oppressed in their own land by foreigners on the basis of skin color, there is nothing happy about this situation. When looking at the photographs of Dorthea Lange do we feel cheated that we don't see a sequel picture beside the tragic one to give us the idea that everything is OK and that we need not exert ourselves to bring about change? I hope not.
"A Walk in the Night" is an exciting read that inspires thought. Highly recommended to, quite honestly, anyone. I would not be surprised if a film will one day emerge from this lush portrait.

5 out of 5 stars Naturalism with a hint of revolution.......2002-10-31

The effects of unjust and inhumane society are internalized by La Guma's characters. Alone they are predetermined by fate to fall from grace- as a result of tenement life, working conditions and being so far seperated from hope of recovery for so long. This might only be a cynical lament for the underdog. But La Guma's account is striking because it subtly documents the gathering strength of the discontent of the neglected masses. Indeed, La Guma's main subject matter is the overwhelming strength of the oppressed that cannot remain bound. A solid insider appraisal of the roots of a people's triumph over illegitimate, abused power

4 out of 5 stars Exploration of Biraciality.......1999-03-22

La Guma's short stories give an excellent feel for the struggle with biraciality in South Africa- the imagery is so clear that you can almost see what the characters see and feel what the characters feel.

1 out of 5 stars This short story struggles..........1999-03-14

Within such short context, La Guma goes into great detail about minuscule and usually unimportant aspects of apartheid and the continued collapse of African tradition and society. He introduces many characters and explains too much about each one, straying the reader from the main "crux" of the story. This does in fact work well for the description of the society in which the story takes place, and paints a morbid, dreadful glance at the decaying African society for it's readers to interpret. He fails to follow through with some important details, which makes it more frustrating to read. If you are looking for a story which tells the absolute truth of life and the hardships it brings, without any positive resolution, I would recommend this book. Otherwise... I wouldn't suggest this for people who are easily depressed and looking for quick, easy and interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars My First Warhammer book ever, and Favorite.......2007-09-15

This was the first Warhammer book that I have read. Since then I have read about 75 and collected about 50, to include the Ultramarines Omnibus that this is loosely tied into. I have all of the Horus Heresy to date (Sep 07) and all of the Commissar Cain to date. I have to say that this is my favorite! I have re-read it about 4 times since I got into it 18 months ago. I highly recommend this book! You can read the other reviews about the plot and details if you like, I am not going to go into it here. I really felt that this was well written and I love the character detail that he went into on both sides. It has you rooting for both sides, I felt connected to Honsou and the Imperial Guard at the same time. The whole book keeps you in suspense because he goes into so much detail on each side, that you don't know until the end which side will win. This is a book that belongs in everyone's library!

5 out of 5 stars the BEST 40k read available.......2006-08-02

Yep, ignore the other reviewers who give these 40k books 4 or 5 stars, THIS IS the best 40k book and no mistake. I've been into 40k for years, most of these books are badly written and of poor quality - not doing the fiction justice - but this one is different.
The only two books worth a look are:
          1. Storm of Iron...........and
          2. Greyknights!
The rest are really poor in comparision, that includes the Horus trilogy by the way! so if your new to this genre these 2 are the best place to start.

          5 out of 5 stars A great, well-written story - I didn't want to put it down !.......2006-07-10

First, Storm of Iron is very well written. It is consistent has great storyline and very few flaws, if just one that I recall.

Like other reviewers said lots of violence and conflict, I add great character development and interactions with a plausible ending. Graham, you did a terrific job! Keep it up!

4 out of 5 stars Good but bloody.......2006-05-29

Good story, describes warhammer at its best.
Though, a bit too much details, blood and gore at some times. Could have done with less...

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-11-04

I've read Dan Abnett and the others in the Warhammer genre, they are good but none compare to Mcneill when it comes to vivid portrayal of a battle scene or moments of tension. This man's work begs to be put on the silver screen! If you want more from this author I highly recommend Warrior's of Ultramar for the best epic battle I've ever read.

            Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for commercial and institutional iron and steel doors excluding shower doors, tub enclosures, and storm doors across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for commercial and institutional iron and steel doors excluding shower doors, tub enclosures, and storm doors. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for overhead and sliding commercial and institutional iron and steel doors excluding shower doors, tub enclosures, and storm doors across the states and cities of the United States. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given some 12,919 cities across in the United States. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state and of the United States is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state and city, latent demand estimates are created for overhead and sliding commercial and institutional iron and steel doors excluding shower doors, tub enclosures, and storm doors. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                            Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for residential iron and steel doors excluding garage doors, shower doors, tub enclosures, and storm doors across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for residential iron and steel doors excluding garage doors, shower doors, tub enclosures, and storm doors.

War has arrived through America's back door, a strategic offensive to turn the Nazi dream into worldwide domination. The Temple of the Nordic Covenant has lit the fuse to detonate a racial holy war across the globe, complete with timetables for genocide, if necessary, and enough guns and nukes to send civilization back to the Stone Age.

The opening onslaught is a warm-up of chaos and blood, with trigger incidents at crucial points. Mack Bolan has taken on neo-Nazis before, but this group is big, armed and very dangerous. From Tacoma to L.A. to Chicago, with a lady Fed by his side, he's turing up the heat, matching the brownshirts shot fo shot.

An evil force is boring inexorably into the heart of the American nation. Bolan is prepared to use all at his disposal to ensure that the republic sees another sunrise.

Even if it means his life . . .

5 out of 5 stars Winnicott Brought to Life.......2001-02-20

Dr. Ulanov's latest work blends the theories of Winnicott with spiritual understanding so beautifully and simply that one is surprised by the gems of insight deposited in each chapter. She also weaves in themes from past books in such a way that you know the idea is familiar, like a childhood friend forgotten but suddenly recalled, but you are challenged to see them with a new prospective and find in them new insights. This book, from cover to cover, lifts up the importance of a space that is offered by God (though Ulanov does not seek to define this God but rather leaves that to the reader)in which true creativity and healing can mix and flow into everyday life. This book is powerfully written, with imagery so accessible and common that it moves the soul closer to that which is Divine. This book not only challenges the reader to explore their own understanding of God but to re-frame how they interact with others. I now have 2 copies of this book. One is my personal copy full of notes and reflections stirred up by the nature of the book while the other copy is for sharing. As a Pastoral Counselor in training I find this book a wonderful source and resource for those struggling to understand the importance of dependence and interdependence not only with others but also with the Divine. Thank you, Dr. Ulanov, for yet another life enriching book.

Combine wild ingredients and a disregard for the ordinary with a little chemistry in the kitchen, and you get the COOKING FEARLESSLY philosophy—a no-holds-barred approach to cooking that is pure Texas and a helluva good time. At Hudson's on the Bend restaurant outside of Austin, chefs Jeff Blank and Jay Moore preach and practice an adventurous cuisine as big and robust as the Lone Star State. Fish and game reign supreme, both on the grill, in the sauté pan, and out of the iron skillet, and they're finished with sauces, salsas, and glazes that'll electrify your palate and change your worldview. With Jeff and Jay at the helm, you'll sit down to daring dishes like Toasted Piñon-Coriander-Crusted Goat Cheese on Garden Greens; Rattlesnake Cakes in a Pistachio Nut Crust; and Smoked Rainbow Trout with Nopalitos, Smoked Bacon, and Apple Jack Sauce. So stick around—the feast is only just getting started.

                              4 out of 5 stars Foodies' paradise.......2005-08-10

I'm a foodie who reads cookbooks for fun and relaxation in addtion to using them to feed friends and family. This book is a multi-discipline delight. The art work, the music-to-cook-by suggestions, the actual recipes. Ah, yes, the actual recipes; a bit labor intensive for my day-to-day tastes, and some of the ingredients are hard to come by in Cajun country, but on the whole, a sensory delight.

4 out of 5 stars woolly mammoth meatballs a la mode.......2000-10-27

These guys could concoct a recipe for woolly mammoth meatballs a la mode, and I'd be willing to try it. Talk about imaginative, tongue-massaging food! But the recipes need to be examined closely, particulary with regards to proportion. The amount of liquid called for in the ancho-bock smashers is excessive, as is the amount of salt in the butternut squash, granny smith apple soup. Despite these glaring errors, this was without a doubt THE BEST COOKBOOK I purchased last year. Twice!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, entertaining and surprisingly useful!.......1999-09-28

This is one of, if not the best cookbook of the year. You don't have to be the world's best cook to enjoy it and create successful meals. And a great gift idea! Bon Appetit!

This book features some of the most exiting people on the planet. It includes imaginative recipes and fearless methods from Jeff & Jay. The art is the most colorfull and exciting that I've ever seen. Shanny Lott must truly be a free spirited genius. The photography is exellent. I think I've seen some of Laurie's stuff in Savure. Deborah brings it all together in words that capture the playfully intelligent spirit of the entire team. Check out the Desert inspired by Anne Richard's Hair and the piece about George W. I recomend this as a must in anyones kitchen. Blow your freinds away with a little fearless cooking school of your own. It is the perfect gift for anyone especially if they like to cook.

                                Book Description

The identification of English white ironstone plates is made far easier through this new book. Organized according to the shape names, the 327 color photographs and 252 drawings of plates, rims, potters marks and registry marks are easy to compare. Copper Lustre and Tea Leaf decorations are included. Because few written records from the manufacturers are available to help analyze these plates, made in large quantities for export primarily to the United States between about 1840 and 1890, this study will be an important reference for identification and comparisons. It is both comprehensive and easy to use, providing an important tool for collectors, dealers, curators, designers, auctioneers, and historians for analyzing Victorian cultural history.

4 out of 5 stars Good Quilting Instruction Book.......2004-07-14

My mother gave me this book when I began to quilt. It gives great basic instructions on overall quilt making, from design to completion. There is even a section on the criterion by which quilts are judged at shows. Except for the classic pieced designs, this is incredibly dated now. (Some of the 70s-80s designs and colors featured look hideous and downright laughable.) Because this was written before the invention of the rotary cutter, the quilt piecing instructions are dated, too. But if you want good instructions on traditional pieced blocks and hand quilting, this is a good source. A well-loved favorite on my bookshelf.

This is a great quilting book! One of the best I've seen. There are patterns from easy to experienced with great color pictures. I like the way they show multiple project ideas for each pattern, from framing one block to making a queen-size quilt. I couldn't wait to get started on a new project after picking up this book- a must-have!
