my favourite Coffin Ed/Gravedigger Jones novel.......2003-11-08
I can't believe this weird, wonderful thriller is out of print; it's a scandal. This is my favourite of Himes' Harlem Cycle of thrillers. It's a fast-paced, surreal read, and thoroughly entertaining. It's also fascinating because it's set in part in and around the gay scene in Harlem of the 1940s/50s. Himes represents the gay characters with the same misanthropic zeal that he does all the other people in the novel, but is not homophobic - even having one gay character courageously outing himself to alibi his lover. Coffin Ed and Gravedigger were, Himes comments, 'not personal moralists.' Other than that, hardboiled fun laced with trenchant comments on the state of American race relations of the period.
Harlem murder mystery at its best............2003-09-14
This book captures the pulse of Harlem. I was captivated by thee tough as nails detectives and the twists this book takes in its 170 odd pages. The ending is fabulous and unexpected. I would also highly recommend reading "The Conjure Man dies" by Rudolph Fisher, another excellent murder mystery based in Harlem.
This book was "da bomb".......1999-01-24
Lots of action, lots of laughs and the 2 toughest detectives since Spencer & Hawk. If you like Harlem, if you like detective novels, if you like action, this is the book for you. A very quick read. Fans of Walter Mosely should read this book. I wonder if good ol' Bill Clinton is up on Mr. Himes. My only thought is why were there only 2 movies made from Mr. Himes books. And why did I just discover him after I saw one of the movies (A Rage In Harlem)

Book Description
"The greatest find in American fiction since Raymond Chandler."-
The Observer (London)
The shocking and explosive hardboiled classic: From murderers to prostitutes, corrupt politicians and racist white detectives, Coffin Ed Johnson and Gravedigger Jones, Harlem's toughest detective duo, must carry the day against an absurdist world of racism and class warfare.
After arriving on the American literary scene with novels of scathing social protest,
Chester Himes created a pioneering pair of dangerously charming African American sleuths, Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, who attempt to maintain some kind of order on the streets of Harlem. Himes died in Spain in 1984.

Book Description
In a realm beset by natural disasters, only the bonded Pairs--Source and Shield--make the land habitable and keep the citizenry safe. But can Dunleavy Mallorough and Lord Shintaro Karish put aside their differences to defeat something even more unnatural than their reluctant affections for each other?
Customer Reviews:
Fantasy with a hint of romance.......2007-08-12
I really enjoyed this book! At first, I wasn't even going to read it because all the other reviews said that the romantic aspect of the book wasn't developed all the way. Also, the cover made it look much more like a comdey. However, I actually liked how the author developed the relationship between the two characters, and wasn't dissapointed thanks to the other reviews. The relationship was fun and witty, and Lee's sarcasm made me laugh throughout. The author also does an amazing job at showing the different sides to an argument and lets the reader decide for themselves about the system instated for the Pairs.
I felt like the summary on the back of the book was a bit inadequete, because the dislike Lee feels for Karish only lasts for a little while. They seem to get over their differences pretty early on in the book. For the most part, Lee tries to figure out what caused the catastrophic weather that wiped out all the other Pairs while trying to find Karish when he has been kidnapped.
Some parts of the book did confuse me. The people in the world seem much more laid back with phrases such as 'my love', and 'darling' when flirting, and doesn't mean anything deep. The gender relationships are also more laid back, but this is not emphasized. Also, I felt like the author didn't explain some things in full, like the Paris' powers, but thankfully it does get cleared up as the book goes on.
This book is definitely one to read over and over again!
Underwhelming packaging disguises a good book.......2007-06-29
I'd seen this book numerous times in brick-and-mortar bookstores and never bothered to pick it up, even to read the back due to the silly artwork on the cover. It was only after seeing some folks in Amazon's LK Hamilton forum recommend the book that I bothered to click over and read the reviews here. Good thing for the author that good word-of-mouth is overcoming the bad marketing.
The book is a light-hearted, humorous fantasy read. While it's no rousing epic, the story is engrossing and the characters eminently likable. And while the underlying magical premise - weather manipulation - has been done in other contexts, Moore puts a nice morbid spin on it to capture the reader's interest (i.e., if one member of the bonded pair dies, the other dies as well).
It's nice to occasionally to read a light fantasy that doesn't require constant review of a detailed map, character list, or fantasy linguistic dictionary to keep track of who's doing what and where the battle is taking place. Ignore the cover. Highly recommend.
Resenting the Packaging.......2006-11-09
I know others have mentioned this. And the viewer can see the cover themselves. With that title and that cover it sounds like a romance novel of opposites within a rather bland fantasy setting. Even the description on the back cover doesn't quite clear this up. And the title is of no help at all. This is not a romance, it is not quite a traditional fantasy tale, and it is not a comic fantasy of the Craig Shaw Gardiner variety. In this case, don't judge the book by its cover or title.
What this book is, is a fairly brisk paced story in a medieval-style setting. That it happens to be on a planet where long ago starships came and settled is the only real SF link to the story. The rest can fall comfortably into the fantasy realm, though there's none of the typical swords and sorcery here. There are some form of paranormal powers however that can affect natural events, and even stop catastrophic events like earthquakes from happening. This is the job of Pairs, two people bonded together with complementary gifts. Dunleavy Mallorough is a newly minted Sheild hoping for a worthy bond with a responsible Source. What she gets is Lord Shintaro Karish and some very interesting times indeed. This reluctant Pair soon find themselves the only ones who can stop the sinister plotting that could mean the death of thousands of people, and they'll have to work together to do it.
For a debut novel from this author, it's not bad. The writing is steady and compelling, the world building is decent and the author's created an intriguing premise with her Pairs of Sheilds and Sources. Even the fairly cut and dried plot isn't a bad one. I was impressed that the author was able to expand upon the talents of the Source and Sheild to make them interesting and engaging. That peice of original design kept the story from becoming too run of the mill or familiar. One of the authors best bits of writing is whenever her main character encounters music. The descriptions are rich and vivid and provide some key character building to the story. Other than the fact that I started off thinking this was a comic fantasy and finding out otherwise, my chief complaint is character. This is a big issue for me, since I read for character first and foremost in a story. Dunleavy's dislike of Taro based on mere rumor is very over the top, and it was very hard to be charitable towards her at all, especially when the rumors did not match his behavior. Taro, on the other hand, is painfully bland--he's friendly, handsome, generous and just seems like a decent fellow with good-looks and a few extra talents. I would have liked to see more friction between them because of actual personality clashes rather that Dunleavy's own personal prejudice against him. Neither character has a true depth of personality or a sense of the profound about them. Perhaps its the fact that Dunleavy is essentially narrating the story, so the story is filtered through her character. If so, I still feel like more could have been done to fill out the characters and make them more three dimensional.
Still, overall this was a good romp, and a decent recreational read for fantasy lovers. Those who like this and would enjoy other fantasy reads might want to check out the sequel, The Hero Strikes Back (the cover is still pretty bad) and also might want to look for The Prince of Ill-Luck by Susan Dexter or Bronwyn's Bane by Elizabeth Scarborough.
Happy Reading ^_^ Shanshad
Resenting the Cover.......2006-10-25
Honest truth. I have had this book for a while, but didn't read it because of the cover. The characters on the cover look like they are all of 18 and maybe 14 respectively. So, I wasn't that interested in reading about teenyboppers. Sue me. However, the male is really almost 30 and the female is over 20. Who knew? Basically, the cover put me off of what turned out to be a good, if quick, read.
The story takes place in a world where there are six important classes of people that sometimes overlap: Shields, Sources, Regulars, Nobles, Merchants, and Peasants. Sources and Shields control the volatile weather events that often occur. The Source channels and focuses energy while the Shield protects them from other energies. Sources and Shields can come from any social class, are pulled away from their families to attend private talent schools at very young ages and are Paired based on their potential to work with one another magically. All other characteristics are ignored if they can work well magically together. As such, Dunleavy finds herself paired with Lord Shintaro, who has a reputation equal to Hugh Hefner's. Since they are both considered to be top class in their fields, the pair is sent to High Scape, a very active hub of weather events. As they learn to work together, Lee and Shintaro learn about each other, Shield and Source politics, and the real world.
Nothing to Resent Here.......2006-08-30
Sometimes, a fantasy story comes along that simply isn't meant to be taken seriously. This is one of them.
Not to say that that's a bad thing. On the contrary, it's wonderful. Resenting the Hero happily mocks a number of fantasy standards, yet manages to avoid completely sacrificing its own story to do so. The plot is not mindblowing or anything, far from it, but it is well suited to the humorous type of story that Resenting the Hero is.
Moore definitely has the ability to write something completely serious. You can see that in her world, which has some very interesting aspects to it. And it would be nice in the future to see what else she can do, but hopefully NOT with this series. The satirical tone is priceless, and I'd hate to see the sense of humor disappear.
The characters are amusing mixes of the extreme characteristics seen in a lot of modern day fantasy novels. Karish is good-looking, charming, admired by everyone, and he doesn't like it one bit. Which we've all seen. But he isn't a complete moody fop, either, as said character-types tend to turn out to be, and channels some of the traits of your typical arrogant, sleeps-with-everyone male character. An entertaining mix. The same goes for Lee. She might be very intelligent, and her first instinct is (almost) always right, but she shares the typical flat-chested, plain-faced physical traits of a classic anti-Mary Sue.
If you're really snobby about your fantasy, you probably won't enjoy this. Which is really too bad, because it's one of the funniest comic fantasies I've ever read. Definitely worth a look if you like that sort of thing.

Customer Reviews:
I wish I read this book when I was thirtysomething.......2006-02-09
I wish I could have read this book when I was in my thirties. During my thirties, I struggled a lot with my single status. Now as a forty something single woman, I realize that God may have something better for me than marriage. I realize that marriage cannot make you happy. One must be happy and content with Christ. I am a complete, whole person regardless of my marital status or station in life. I wish books like this were in Christian bookstores before the Internet came into being. It used to be extremely difficult to find books dealing with single people and the Christian life. Many churches don't help the situation either. They tend to make single people feel inferior, like if they are less than adult if they aren't married and have 2.5 kids and live in the suburbs. In the New Testament, Jesus Himself was a single adult in His thirties. He reached out to the people who were downcast, sick and oppressed with all sorts of afflictions. I am sure some of these people were single adults, like the man who was infirm for 38 years, Lazarus, Mary Magdalene, and others. Jesus was very tender and compassionate to these people, who were probably outcasts in the culture that they lived in. I wish that more churches would reach out to single adults in every stage of life and began to affirm them as worthwhile people. One need not to have a spouse in order to be whole and complete. Many people today get married for selfish reasons, only to end up in divorce court later on. In his book, Mr. Cavanaugh states that being single is not a curse or a sign of failure and that marriage is not God's ultimate will for one's life. I really enjoyed this book and it has helped to start a healing process in my own life. I want to be able to serve Jesus Christ in the best way that I can, with the time that I have left on this earth.
Are you serious about your Christian walk?.......2000-06-13
This is by far the best book I've ever read concerning life as a single Christian adult. Author Michael Cavanaugh deals with so many of the problems that we face in the world today. He raises a Godly standard, and in simple, straightforward language, he teaches and encourages his readers to fight the good fight of faith. The book takes a no-nonsense approach, and shows how compromise very often leads to misery, but walking in the way that God has set before us will strengthen us, and give us His peace and fulfillment, whether we ever marry or not. I've read it four times, and plan on reading it again.
Praise God for the wisdom He has given Michael Cavanaugh.......1999-09-08
If you are single, you must read this book. I found this book on a bargains table at a Christian Ed conference. Now, I wish I had bought all the copies!! The book made me cry time and again as I recognized my selfish attitudes about my singleness. I now realize that being single is a unique opportunity to get to know God better, free from distractions. And for those of you who, like me, thought it was a book for people who expect to remain single for the rest of their lives, it is not. But it will help you to be content, whatever your situation. It will help you to realize what God's purpose is for your life, and it will bring you peace and joy and hope for the future. Please get this book back in print, I want to give copies to all my single friends, so it can bless them as it blessed me!
Excellent!.......1999-06-05
A really excellent book. God helped me through it to refocus my mind on Him and see myself complete in Him.
A must read for all who are single!.......1998-12-13
I really enjoyed this book. This is now one of my favorite books. It helped me to refocus my view of my status in life as a Single Adult. It helped me to develop a renewed desire to know God better. It reminded me that I am important to Him - JUST AS I AM - SINGLE. My hat is off to Michael Cavanaugh whom God gave the ability to communicate these concepts to people so appropriately. What are you waiting for? Read the book!

People have been grilling over open flames as long as there have been flames. But let's face it, roast mastodon doesn't sound half as good as Sage Rubbed Veal Chops with Jerky Sauce. Tastes have changed, and we have gotten a little better at grilling. Specifically, Americans have gotten better--since, after all, grilling is the quintessential American culinary art. Don't believe it? Try finding an order of grilled Mescal Magic Baby Back Ribs next time you're in Paris. Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison know this. It is the premise of their book Born To Grill. Make no mistake about it, this is a cookbook with attitude, and it practically swaggers when you read it. The title screams to be tattooed on a bicep underneath a little Weber kettle. The Jamisons show they are onto a good thing and argue for a back-to-basics, high-heat, open-air, open-flame approach. Serious meat needs serious heat, and grilling is the only surefire approach.
Once the book gets your attention, a few things are revealed. Grilling makes sense. It is simple, economical, and best of all, it tastes good. Grilling is not just about huge slabs of meat. Pizza, shellfish, vegetables, and even pasta have a place on the grill. And grilling is fun. Playing with fire under an open sky wins hands down over a broiler in the kitchen.
The Jamisons are no strangers to American regional cooking. Their earlier books include Sublime Smoke, Texas Home Cooking, and two James Beard Book award winners, The Border Cookbook and Smoke and Spice. They write with conviction and the kind of authority that convinces you that you are lucky--lucky enough to be born to grill. --Mark O. Howerton

Born to Grill: An American Celebration.......2007-09-03
A wonderful cookbook for the grill lover in all of us. The recipes are a step beyond the regular hamburger and ribs of most grilling cookbooks
Good recipes, but close-minded attitude.......2002-09-28
I highly recommend this book for the recipes, but I was very turned off by the "open grill only" attitude of the authors. The authors believe in charcoal or other open flame methods only, and thumb their nose at Weber-style grills which employ the cover of the grill in cooking.
This in itself was not terrible, but the authors made a feeble, almost cynical attempt at "also providing" covered cooking methods and times, and it appears as if they went off of a chart as opposed to actually doing it for themselves. The times are generally completely out of whack with what my grill actually required (I use a Weber Silver B, which is not the most powerful grill out there but is certainly more than adequate for any of the recipes I tried). Some of the instructions are incomplete or downright contradictory!
So, recommended for charcoal users; everyone else, beware.
Tasty recipes & other stuff, too..........2002-08-02
Love this book...well orgnanized by type-of-food. As a beginner/intermediate griller, I get a lot out of it since the book supplements the (savory) recipes with tips and tricks on grilling techniques; e.g vegetable grilling techniques in "Getting Fresh in the Garden," and tips on picking the best cut of meat in "Serious Steaks." The cider-and-brown-sugar salmon (with spice rub) is one of my favorites...also love their beer-braised onion recipe in the burger section. I'll be heaping burgers high w/ these from now on.
I'd also never tried tricky scallops before and the timing was right on -- plus the paprika-rub spiced them up. If you're just starting to grill, check this book out - recommend it.
The true bible of grilling.......2002-08-01
We have used the recipes in this book for a grilling demonstration day at our store for years. The book contains recipes for out of the ordinary menu items you wouldn't think of cooking on the grill. The last recipe I prepared was for Tortilla and Tomato soup, it was incredible. I'll never be able to eat Campbells again without thinking of these flavors. The other nice thing about this book is that it still covers the basics like dogs and burgers with advice on how to make them the best you've ever tasted.
Beside most of the recipes is a highlighted section on optional ways to prepare them. These suggestions give you the chance to alter the recipe each time you prepare it.
The section at the end on side dishes lets you put together a complete menu of grilled items and those prepared on the stove. This is one stop shopping for dinner ideas!
Loose Grips on the Grill.......2001-07-10
Some catchy ideas and tasty combos, but nothing simple here. And if you don't live in Tucson or El Paso, where do you come across "Consorizo," "carambolas," or squash blossoms on your run to the gas station? To their credit, the Jamison's give you alternatives that might show up at your local market, but don't wait to the last minute cause there's nothing here that can be done in that amount of time.
When you have the time, and need the quantity, there's some good stuff here. And the Jamison's have a very useful chapter on ingridients you can make and store (and even have the grace to include them in most of the 300 recipes! Nice going!). The instructions are seldom ambiguious and often entertaining and the layout inviting. Also enjoyed the lack of zealotry. The book reads like a cookout should feel.

Book Description
This handbook provides hundreds of clear color photographs and fascinating stories which reveal volumes about each fragrance, far beyond the size of the bottles. These miniature bottles are popular collectibles today and this useful book contains information to satisfy the most discriminating taste. Fragrance names, their creators, launch dates, bottle and package designs and dimensions are all here, as well as a price guide in the captions to reflect today's fragrance market.
Book Description
An extravagant array of miniature perfume bottles fills these full-color pages, pure rapture for those who love scent, beautiful glasswork, and the mystique of the truly elegant. While collectors of full-sizes perfume bottles have always found a place for a few choice "minis" on their shelves, these are a growing trend to specialize in these little beauties in their own right. From the Victorian era through the beginning of the 20th century, from the world wars through the 1990s, this book has it all! Over 600 brilliant photographs show every detail and each bottle is identified by fragrance, perfumer, size, and era. Significant glassmakers are discussed, and their works are identified. This book has bottle-by-bottle guide to current market values.
Customer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Kurt was murdered!.......2000-05-22
Kurt was beautiful. He was probably one of the most gifted men to come into this world, and he had to leave when he had just arrived. It is hard to find beauty now, and when you finally stumble upon it and then lose it, it is hard. I won't let Kurt go without a fight. If you think Kurt killed himself, read this book. It disects the situation as close to perfectly as I can imagine. It will turn a follower into you. Courtney had it taken away from us, the same way she took Kurt, but I can get you the book if you want it. E-mail me. googoogrl60k@hotmail.com
he didnt even meet kurt! ...................2000-02-22
i dont no why i bothered reading a book where courtney loves father gets to diss her(when really he hardly nos her).( he wasnt allowed custordy of courtney when his wife used the fact that he gave courtney LSD's at age 4 in a court of law) (want proof?search courtney love on the internet and go to the site saying'dedicated to protected courtney against rumours'), he never even meet kurt or frances..mr harrison doesnt give courtney lee-way such as she soothed kurt through herion withdraws while she was having his baby. just thinking about this annoys me.it disturds me that mr h. wants to paints a clear picture;that his daughter is evil .read it if u want it might be true but mr harrison has tried to make money of peolpe he doesnt really no before -the grateful dead-he wrote a book about them after being their manager for one month or something-then he was fired.
THE BEST OF ITS GENRE!.......1999-10-23
This book was so painstakingly written and researched that it's a shame that ms Love has had it repressed. She will get her dues paid if enough people read this informative book.
Even if you hated Nirvana, you will find that Kurt Cobain didn't kill himself as the media would like you to continue believing.
Courtney is a very shrewd and manipulative woman, and it's unfortunate that she crossed paths with the man that had much more to offer. While Courney has contributed nothing to the world. Unless riding the coatails of the gifted is an accomplishment. The tale of Kurt and Courney is very reminiscent of Ayn Rands' Fountainhead.
a well deserved 5 stars.......1999-09-12
hank harrison put alot of time into this book researching and devoloping his story i also believe that kurt was murdered .the evidence was over looked in this case. i pity courtney for being able to live with the murder she helped/commited like another day. thank you kurt, we all miss you
Best Possible Book on Cobain, Up-to date........1999-06-20
There are several Nirvana books on the market, this one is the most profound and well written. Hevaily researched and very empathic. Kurt would have liked it.
