New comer to the border region.......2002-02-25
I recently had the previlege to hear the author, Paul S. Flores, and read his novel and I am so impressed with the young man's writing of the San Diego/Tijuana border area I want to read much more about this area. He expresses a very believable way of life along with his intimate portrayal of the characters' lives that you feel as if you are there as part of the family gatherings or actually partaking in the conversations. I highly recommend this book to all those that live in the region of the San Diego/Tijuana border but also those who are curious and want to taste the reality of border life.
From the heart.......2002-02-25
Mr. Flores seems to know his characters and depicts each one with a passion reserved for those who are close to us. His knowledge of the border area lends to the realizm of the book. There are not too many books that deal with the subject of illegal immigration and drugs and tie it together so neatly. I recommend this book highly.
Reality in the pages.......2002-01-03
Each character was so vivid and understandable. The reality in the book was great. I enjoyed it even more knowing the area of San Diego and Tijuana. I have bought 2 copies for friends one who does not live close to the boarder, but I am sure will enjoy it as much as I did.

Book Description
The armies of the Outlanders crushed the highlanders at the battle of Colden Moor–killing their finest warriors and breaking their freeborn spirit. The highlanders are now a conquered people, ruled by the brutal Baron Gottasson.
Prophecies speak of the coming of a new leader, a descendent of Ironhand, mightiest of the highland kings. A leader who will throw off the Outlander yoke. But only one highlander carries the blood of Ironhand: Sigarni, a wild and willful teenage girl who cares for nothing save her own concerns. Until a fateful encounter thrusts her onto a path of rebellion. Now, hunted by the baron’s soldiers and stalked by an evil sorcerer, Sigarni will be forced to fulfill her destiny . . . or perish.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
A teenaged girl has to deal with herself, and the fact that her own people are living under an oppresive regime. She has to grow up to learn to care, and then put her talents to use in a military fashion to start to do something about it.
A lot of pain and suffering await this girl before she grows into a strong leader and a legend of the Highlands.
A lady of ice and steel..........2006-08-03
I consider this book special within the library of David Gemmell novels. One thing (rather obviously) that makes it special is the fact that the main character is a woman. This is not to say that David Gemmell does not have strong, female characters in his other novels. He does. And plenty of them. However, Sigarni IS Ironhand's Daughter, she is not just a character that other heroes meet as part of their travels.
Sigarni, like most great Gemmell characters, is a flawed character. Initially, she can appear arrogant and rather uncaring. It is hard to develop any sympathy for her (that comes later). Strangley, some of the male characters about her are more easy to sympathise with, particularly her brave, loyal dwarf friend.
It is not until something life-changing and horrific happens that one is completely swept into Sigarni's world. These early pages of the novel remind me a lot of the first third of the movie Braveheart, not only because the people are highlanders, but also the arrogance of the overlords and the apparently insurmountable odds stacked agaisnt our champion. But it does not end there, that is only the beginning. Sigarni also has to battle the prejudices of her own people, and the darkness in her own heart in order to achieve the destiny she finds herself thrust towards.
There are some usual Gemmell plot tools in the book, including gates to other worlds, dimensional time travel, near-immortal wise-men, demon conjuring evil sorcerors, etc., but none of these are the main focus of the book and they only add to the complexity and enjoyability of the main storyline.
I don't want to ruin the book for anyone else, so I will leave my descriptions there.
Read this especially if the female characters in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time novels really, really irritate you. This will refresh you and give you an appreciation of truly strong, well-rounded female fantasy characters.
3 1/2 Stars.......2006-03-06
While this is written well in the typical Gemmell style, this is not up to Legend or any of his other classic novels. The first book in a duology with the sequel being The Hawk Eternal. This is actually an older work by Mr. Gemmell, having been published in the U.K. back in 1995. It covers a lot of familiar ground, so if you are a fan of Gemmell, there will be nothing extremely new for you aside from having a female as the lead character. The story involves the conquered highlands people, who resemble the ancient Scottish peoples and the conquerers who are vaguely Roman. The story has the usual fighting, a smattering of magic, prophecies and alternate worlds all thrown into 347 pages. The only real disappointment with the book is the final battle. I always love the great big battles of Gemmell's stories. This one however was wrapped up really quickly and it was not as enjoyable as others. On the plus side, Gemmell does turn Sigarni from an unlikebale character at the start of the book to one you can feel genuine compassion for by the end. I will pick up the second book to see how all the pieces fall into place. If you are new to Gemmell, don't start with this one.
If I read one more "eye" reference....errrr.......2005-02-26
I have to admit, I did enjoy reading this book, but the constant eye injuries...well...seems that Gemmell's world could use an OSHA standard for eye protection. Eye riped out by hawk...eye slashed by sword...arrow in the eye...Ay Yi Yi.
I was disappointed in the ending...not in the deaths but in the battle discriptions. 300+ pages leading up to the big battle, and 5 pages of the actual fight. I've read details of barroom brawls with more detail.
Hey...if your looking for a fun little romping read to curl up and relax with...enjoy, just don't expect a classic.
A Gemmell work, but not his greatest..........2004-12-29
Having read almost all of his most recent work, I turned to this novel for my Gemmell pleasure.
Unfortunately, Gemmell's usual flair and style for narration is scattershot in this piece and the cast of characters hold no real special appeal for me.
While there are good ideas in this book, there is a much better read in any of his other novels.

Book Description
A catalogue of the graphic works of Herbert L. Fink, an artist of growing stature whose recent honors include a citation by the Society of Illustrators for some of the “best book illustrations for the year” (John Gardner’s The King’s Indian,
1973)
and his 1979 election to the National Academy of Design.
Fink’s work is represented in the Albright Knox Museum, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Library of Congress, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and, as he humorously adds, “hangs” in the United States Supreme Court.
Fink’s subjects include landscapes, figure studies, and surrealistic or allegorical representations. Obvious influences on the artist are the American impressionists he saw during the 1930s and 1940s,
his teacher and idol, George Grosz, the Barbizon School, and such surrealists as Pieter Breugel. He has evolved from an analytical cubist to a realist, however surrealistic his juxtaposition of images may be.

Book Description
Nina Simone was the first of the soul divas, and the most spectacular. Before Aretha Franklin, before Diana Ross, she established herself as a performer whose talent was matched only by her refusal to accept compromise. A classically trained prodigy, she brought her gift to bear on the whole sweep of African-American music, and much more besides, pushing ahead into an engagement with the blues, gospel, folk songs, and even rock 'n' roll. But just as she was becoming acclaimed by a more mainstream audience -- the Animals, for instance, covered her legendary version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" -- the course of her career veered away from the safe, conventional paths into the burgeoning black-consciousness movement. Her long involvement with the movement included a friendship with the black-power leader Stokely Carmichael and time spent living in Africa. She remains a performer of compelling and often disturbing magnetism whose range is unsurpassed. Richard Williams explores the life and work of this enigmatic and brilliant woman in a book that exemplifies what great writing on music has the potential to be. Black-and-white photographs are included. "Richard Williams is one of the best music writers around, particularly on jazz." -- Time Out (London) "A hugely gifted and knowledgeable writer." -- Sunday Times (London)

Customer Reviews:
Worthy of its 5 stars.......2005-10-15
I don't have a whole lot to add to these great reviews other than stating that this book deserves its current five-star rating. The excerpts are well-chosen and they really help the reader see into the lives of the Dutch from multiple angles. The fact that the excerpts are bite-size makes this an especially desirable book to take with you to read on the plane or in your hotel/apartment each night.
I am leading a group to the Netherlands next year and this will likely be required reading.
Amsterdam for Readers.......2001-11-10
Anyone who has ever visited Amsterdam knows the curious magic of that city, its canal-lined streets, polyglot population, and unconventional mores. But few are aware of Amsterdam's rich literary life. Manfred Wolf brilliantly redresses that cultural gap in Amsterdam, A Traveler's Literary Companion.
In what may be the best in an excellent series, Wolf, Professor of English at San Francisco State University and leading expert on Dutch literature, introduces the reader to an Amsterdam of gaiety and sadness, beauty and squalor, hope and despair. The selections are arranged thematically and geographically and include "City and People," "Canals," "Red-Light District," "Gay Amsterdam," and "Jewish Amsterdam." Among the provocative essays and stories are Remco Campert's "Soft Landings," Hermine Landvreugd's "Staring out the Window," and Margo Minco's "The Return."
To read this fine collection is to come a step closer to overcoming what Cees Nottebom observes in the opening selection, "Amsterdam": "This is my city, a token for the uninitiated. She will never reveal herself to the outsider who does not know her language and history, because it is precisely language and names that are the keepers of secret moods, secret places, secret memories."
Fine book on a civilized city.......2001-10-06
Divided into sections including "City and People," "Canals," "Red-Light District," "Gay Amsterdam" and "Jewish Amsterdam," Manfred Wolf's wonderful new volume, "Amsterdam," is both travel guide to this quirky, classy, multi-cultural city, and an introduction to the writings of a number of Dutch literary greats. Through these samplings one is exposed to Dutch traditions of tolerance, freedom of expression, hatred of fanaticism, love of compromise and at the same time the occasional and peculiar manifestations of Dutch small-mindedness. It is the perfect book to accompany a visit to Amsterdam as well as the perfect volume for gaining insights into this imminently civilized city, if one lacks the opportunity to travel there. Don't miss it.
Discover a great city and some great writers too.......2001-08-10
When I first learned of this collection of Dutch fiction, I was enthusiastic about the concept (a literary anthology for the traveler to Amsterdam) but at the same time a bit apprehensive about whether selections could be found which would give a taste of this historic and many-sided city without compromising either readability or literary merit. I needn't have worried. For the most part the translations are first-rate, and the short stories and excerpts from longer works are well chosen, both for quality and the information they convey about various aspects of the city. It is refreshing to see the work of eminent, but little-known (in the English-speaking world, at least) Dutch writers like Gerard Reve and Maarten `t Hart in English. The beauty of a book like this is that it can mentally prepare you for a visit to Amsterdam (or possibly even inspire you to plan one) in a much more subtle and ultimately more enjoyable way than any standard guidebook can do.
Amsterdam's Literary Insights.......2001-07-27
This is a rich and intruiging collection of Duch literature that should be of interest to anyone visiting Holland and seeking insight into the true culture of the country, which is far too often clouded by many popular stereotypes. I lived in Holland for two years and enjoyed picking out not only the references to familiar places, but also the small details of Dutch character, customs, history, and lifestyle that transported me back to the "real" Holland that only the Dutch--and insightful travelers--come to know. The selections are varied and of high literary quality in their own right, and are worth reading even if were one not planning a trip to Holland. But after finishing this book one might very well consider doing so.

A Chinese author relives her family history through turbulent times.......2007-04-10
First of all 'Tracing it Home' is a story and not history. More accurately it is a narrative as the author relives her past and builds up a vibrant and rich tapestry of life in China as we follow the fortunes of her family. Unlike many other bestseller authors this is not stilicized fiction created out of facts gathered from second-hand accounts.
Though "Tracing it Home" could be criticized for the many things it is not, it is fascinating and engages the reader. She describes the traumatic events that still haunt Chinese society yet in the character of the loyal Hanze she finds forgiveness. The distinction that she makes between surrendering to tyranny and accepting the inexplicability of what happens is very crucial to creating a positive approach in bridging conflicts. "All I know is that Hanze doesn't hate his oppressor because to hate your enemy is to let him do worse to you - in hatred as in love, you grow like the one who absorbs you."
Lynn Pan is an author who takes the reader on a journey into the turbulent past of China without judgement or an overseas Chinese or Western bias. She grew up in Malaysia's dynamic Chinese population and in England and Hong Kong, but was born in and now lives in Shanghai. Warmly recommended reading.
A beautiful book.......2005-06-23
Lynn Pan's "Tracing It Home" is a resonant and beautiful memoir that stayed with me long after I finished reading it. She has a particular gift for intertwining family issues with historical ones, leading to a very rich narrative. As I look over the book, I see many, many pages I have turned down so that I can revisit a particularly poignant turn of phrase. If you are interested in the history of Shanghai or in Chinese family relationships, you will learn a great deal from this book and experience a very enjoyable read in the process.
An intelligent alternative to the likes of Amy Tan.......2002-05-17
"Tracing it Home" could be criticized for the many things it is not, but for what it IS, it is wonderful. Lynn Pan is one of the best, if not THE best writer around on subjects of Old Shanghai and the Chinese Diaspora. She is a Writer, however, and not a historian or a journalist. She tells a story, and tells it engagingly and beautifully.
"Tracing it Home" is a vastly superior alternative to the sloppy, melodramatic and orientalized literature from other Overseas Chinese women writers like Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan. Their works, yes, appeal to western readers, but only because they present the stylized characature of Chinese history and culture that western readers imagine, rather than the complicated reality. That is because these Chinese Americans know China only through the lens of immigrant idealized mythology and American misperceptions, rather than their own experience.
Lynn is a world different from those poseurs, because she knows and understands China, as it was and as it is. She gives context to the historical cruelties that most ABC writers eroticize. She grew up in Malaysia's dynamic Chinese population and in England and Hong Kong, but was born in and now lives in Shanghai.
The story of the Pan family is fascinating and elegantly presented. Lynn's builder grandfather was the Horatio Alger type that made Shanghai famous. The travails his success created for his offspring are remarkable yet common among Shanghai families. Lynn Pan knows this, and avoids the wallowing in self-importance that makes most "I survived China" memoirs tedius (ie "Red Azalea", "Life and Death in Shanghai").
Lynn is an elegant, evocative writer, and perhaps the greatest pleasure of "Tracing it Home" is its purveyance of Shanghai as a place, and her grandfather's large role in shaping the city's geography. The post-modern white box of a 1940s mansion that he built and where Lynn was born is just down the block from my current home, and I can see the Picardie, which he built, out my window. Small pleasures, slices of personal history, are contained in this big little story.
Disappointing.......2000-07-09
When Lynn Pan tells the stories of her family's past, the work is riveting, but too often she inserts herself in the story. Not only does it fracture time in a confusing way (unlike the way Chang-Rae Lee fractures time to a purpose), but it interupts the through line, making it difficult to remember where we are in the overall story. There are too many excellent books about modern China (Shanghai, Chiang KaiShek, the Cultural Revolution, etc.) to recommend this one.
