Book Description
Another Book About Another Broken Heart is a fast-paced monologue filtered through the consciousness of this clever, albeit self-obsessed and miserable young woman. After moving from Toronto to Montreal, Katy is forced to forge new friendships, some providing new strength, others resulting in disaster. Originally intended as a one-woman show, the voice-driven nature of this novel allows it to "perform" for the reader; Katy's cognizance of our presence disrupts the narrative and invites us to participate fully in her often hilarious take on the subject that's been done to death and then done again.
Customer Reviews:
So true it hurts.......2004-12-29
First off, I have to say that like the protagonist of this book, I'm from Toronto and lived in Montreal throughout my university years. That being said, Ms. Tausch should be proud that one of those who can best judge the truth of her story is completely knocked out by how accurately she captures all the little details, the sense, the feel, the agony and geography of this world -- this inter-city and perhaps generation-specific world so densely populated that it's about time someone documented it. With excruciating vividness. In response to WP Kinsella's Books in Canada review: Yes, the story of Katy is pathetic, and of course it's immature: that's the whole point. Has it ever, in the last hundred years, been a crime to be immature at twenty-one? Is it so unheard-of to retain vestiges of an adolescent mentality just two years shy of high school? Bless Kinsella's crochety, embittered old heart, but in the case of his review of Another Book About Another Broken Heart, I have to conclude by saying that he's an old coot who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Patricia A. McKillip is one of America's greatest fantasy authors. Her best known novels include Riddle-Master; World Fantasy Award winner The Forgotten Beasts of Eld; World Fantasy Award and Mythopoeic Award winner Ombria in Shadow; and In the Forests of Serre. Like its predecessors, Alphabet of Thorn demonstrates McKillip's mastery of prose and her knowledge of the human heart.
As an infant, Nepenthe was abandoned by her mother on the edge of a cliff so high no one can hear the sea below. Nepenthe was raised by the librarians of the Royal Library of Raine, and knows little of the outside world beyond what she reads. She has a gift for translation, and she alone has a chance of translating a newly arrived book, a mysterious tome written in an alien alphabet that resembles thorns. But Nepenthe has fallen in love with the high-born student-mage who brings her the book. And the thorns are exerting a strange power over her--a magic that may destroy not only Nepenthe, but the kingdom of Raine and the entire world. --Cynthia Ward

"She Has No Idea What Brute Force and Subtleties Can Hold a Realm Together...".......2007-02-17
Once again Patricia McKillip crafts a wonderful story, and although I must admit that I haven't read all of her novels, I think it's safe to say that "Alphabet of Thorn" is one of her best works. Out of her many books I *have* read, this one is definitely my favourite. Her beautiful language, her startling imagery, her intricate plot, her mind-twisting ideas...all come together in this stunning story.
In a beautiful cliff-top palace by the sea (so high that one cannot hear the ocean from the top) a coronation is taking place for the young and inexperienced Queen Tessera. Delegates and dignitaries from the Twelve Crowns (the term given to the divided countries that rule under the Queen's supervision) have come to bestow their blessing - and their judgments - on the new Queen. Tessera is in a precarious situation, as any number of her new subjects could take this opportunity to overthrow the monarchy and establish themselves as high-ruler of Raine.
But beneath all the pomp and colour, dug deep into the cliff, is the royal library, where scholars and librarians go about their business out of sight of the bustle above. Nepenthe is a young foundling, raised by the librarians and now working as a transcriptor in the underground library when she travels to the nearby floating school of wizardry to fetch a book that needs translating. But as soon as she has the mysterious book in her hands, one that is written in a twisted language of thorns, she finds herself transfixed. Slowly she begins to translate the strange text, uncovering the history of the Emperor Axis and his sorcereress/lover Kane (I only wish McKillip had given them better names).
Axis was obsessed with conquering, and Kane was obsessed with him: together the two swept across their world, and in translating the text, Nepenthe is swept up in their tale. She is hardly aware of the political machinations going on above-ground, though she is slightly more attentive toward Bourne, the young wizard in training (unfortunately part of a treasonous family) who delivers her the book. But what compels Nepenthe to translate the book, how will it finish, and what does it have to do with the trouble brewing in Raine?
I'll say this as simply as possible: this is a terrific book, with an intricate plot and a great twist mid-way through. Newcomers to McKillip's style can sometimes be a bit off-put by the language, and when I first discovered McKillip it took me a while to get used to the fact that the story was often hidden behind the dense use of language. But the more of McKillip you read, the more you get used to it, and I found "Alphabet of Thorn" compulsive reading. Every chapter I finished, I couldn't wait to get to the next one. There are a couple of unnecessary quirks - I couldn't understand Bourne's presence at the wizard-school (simply because McKillip doesn't explore the rules of magic-users in this world; leading me to wonder why every country didn't send their kids into the school to learn how to use useful magic that can be used in their favour) and the romance between Bourne and Nepenthe wasn't entirely convincing.
But those are minor quibbles, and do nothing to affect the flow of the story. There are so many good ideas packed into this book that a less-gifted author would have probably split them up into several different books. I loved the parallel between the darkness of the subterranean library and the bustle of the palace, as well as the intricate political maneuvering that Tessera must negotiate (including the prickly relationship between herself and her deceased father's old advisor Vevay, who doesn't think Tessera has the mettle to rule). Then there's the way McKillip plays with the mutability of history and legend, plus it never ceases to amaze me at how McKillip can take a simple image, for example, a folded cloth - and form an entire theme around it. If you want to know how, you're just going to have to read the book! If I say anymore, I'll just end up giving away the entire plot - so get your hands on it.
"It shapes your heart; you can hide nothing from it...".......2006-12-27
Another great book from McKillip - a fairytale with a very natural warmth. The whole turning of the tricks and traps as lost legends move through time on their conquest of the present is handled skillfully. The pain you feel even for the coming conquerors who have their own sorrows that drive them - McKillip brushed on all details with amazing detail and concern for the characters.
Great Easy Read.......2006-11-01
The book was a fabulous read and I would love for there to be another book in this world. I found myself drawn to the main character and captured by McKillip's skillful writing. Though the book is slightly predictable for frequent fantasy readers, the style of writing and intriguing theories of history will keep you entertained.
The Castle on the Edge.......2006-08-17
I am McKillip's fan and trying to collect all of her works. I love her way of telling a story. The metaphor, message behind an event and the language have their own class. this book is no exception. With the beautiful cover art from Craft, it is simply a gem.
The story was started with 2 stories from different timelines. They both progressed till they met at an expertly drawn point although I still much prefer The Riddle Master trilogy's.
I was kind of surprised by a twist in a sentence near the end chapters. Mesmerizing.
Beautiful.......2006-02-10
Patricia McKillip writes so beautifully in this book, the whole thing ends up making you feel as if you're looking at a something beautiful and magical. This is one of my favorite books.

Book Description
The future war is now. Hiding out in Alaska, Sarah and John Connor, along with ex-counterterrorist agent, Dieter von Rossbach, are playing a waiting game -- trying to live their lives but ever watchful of Cyberdyne Corporation and the possibility of Skynet, the artificial intelligence network destined to destroy the world as we know it. They've fought for years to prevent this, and now, believing that John's love, Wendy, sacrificed herself to successfully prevent Skynet from becoming sentient, they think humanity may finally have a chance to survive.
Then the United States government announces that all military and communications systems will be placed under the command of a brand-new, extremely powerful Artificial Intelligence named Skynet, effective immediately.
Racing desperately to alert their allies, the Connors discover that Wendy's sacrifice was in vain -- far from being harmless, Skynet is active, sentient, and ready to terminate the human nuisance once and for all. Engineered by the relentless AI, the apocalypse of Judgment Day turns cities into deathtraps and releases mass destruction across the globe.
In the nuclear winter that follows, our world changes forever: Cities become deathtraps of disease and famine patrolled by implacable machines, the first Hunter-Killer and T-90 Terminator units begin to exterminate their human prey, and all human life faces a desperate battle for survival against a seemingly unstoppable enemy.
But there is still one rallying cry of hope, one man who will step to the forefront of the long fight to keep humanity from extinction: John Connor.
A well-regarded author of alternate history sf novels, S. M. Stirling has written more than twenty-five books, including acclaimed collaborations with Anne McCaffrey, Jerry Pournelle, and David Drake. His most recent novels are T2®: Rising Storm, T2®: Infiltrator, The Conquistadors, and The Peshawar Lancers.

Customer Reviews:
The "Real" Story Revealed! Outstanding.......2006-02-12
T2: The Future War is the finest of the three T2 novels by S.M. Stirling. I fully concur with Mr. M. Billman's review of this book (see his review below on Amazon). This whole series expertly "tells" the story of the events leading up to Judgment Day and all the details of the war with the machines and the main characters of the T1 and T2 movies. Unlike other authors, Stirling doesn't go off the original storyline by inventing "new" ideas and events. This trilogy simply tells the tale that Kyle Reese told Sarah Connor in T-1 in fascinating detail. Of the 3 novels, this one stands out by providing most of the "missing" information from the movies; however, to get the full effect you MUST read all three (T2: Infiltrator, T2: Rising Storm). I must warn you though that Infiltrator and Rising Storm can be a bit boring with a lot of filler, but well worth the time and effort. Combined with The Future War, this series gives the Terminator fans EVERYTHING they need to know about the series. Be forewarned, forget about the disaster that was T3 and the coming disaster called T4 (unless they let James Cameron do the movie). You won't be disappointed!
Finally the book that ties it all together!!.......2004-09-11
I have read every Terminator book written and all of them are pretty but this book connects all the movies and all the other books together.
I don't want to give away anything in this review, but if you were ever wondering what happened just before Judgement day, during, and after, this is the book for you.
It does NOT just jump around and leave alot for you to guess at. It goes into all the things you wondered about.
How did Skynet build and progress after J-Day without human help....or did it?
How did Kyle Reese grow up to be the man that he is?
What were his parents like?
What happen to many of the military personal that were NOT near major cities during the first wave of the attack?
How did the resistance start? Who was for and against it?
It ties into the movies RIGHT till the very start of T-1.
The only bad thing about the book is that it is only 375 pages!! I wish it was longer.
Now that they filled in ALL the gaps, I am wondering where it will go next.....
I just hope where ever it goes that S.M. Stirling will write the book!
Good, but very rushed........2004-07-28
This final entry into Stirling's great T2 series is overall a good read, telling the tale of John Connor's rise to leadership over the remnants of mankind in the war against the machines and their human followers. My major complaint is that the book feels rushed, as it covers about twenty years of war in one volume. Characters vital to the other two books, namely Snog's college buddies, are dropped here, with no explanation of what happened to them. Other characters come in for the first part of the book, but are killed off or disappear before the second half.
This gets insane near the end, as Kyle Reese's entire 20+ year life is covered in about 80 pages of what are basically vignettes interspersed with the main story of John's fight. This main story is also rushed, with two years or more flying by at a time. This is seriously what's crammed in the last ten pages:
-Skynet's defense grid is smashed.
-The time machine facility is captured in a huge battle.
-The Terminators go back in time.
-Kyle Reese and the good T-800 go back.
-The book ends.
And no, there weren't spoilers there, if you've seen the movies, which you should have if you're reading this series.
In conclusion, while the book is well-written, it feels like Stirling tried to cram what should have been two, or even more, books into a single novel. By all means, buy this if you've read the other two books and want to see the end of the series, because it's a good book. But this novel won't make anyone a new fan of the series, and even veterans of the Terminator saga like myself might get confused at the insane pace of the last hundred or so pages.
fabululously awful, and then just plain awful.......2004-03-29
So bad it's a blast to read. Jam packed with the author's political views, especially hilarious when they have nothing to do with the plot! There's nothing like giving book contracts to the mentally disturbed. Look out Vegans and environmentalists! You'll be target number one when Skynet rules, aparently. Also hilarous are the dropped characters and storylines, like the group of college students who have their own chapter to almost never be mentioned again. Also: There's a gas shortage! Don't waste gas! We have to get somewhere quickly for this plot twist, let's drive! And remember, if you disagree with Sterling's political views you are an "idiot activist in an idiot cause," so there!
A Book Written on Spec, and it Shows.......2004-02-18
T2: The Future War is the third book in a series that follows the characters of
The Terminator movies from where the movies leave off to future world that was
described so chillingly in the first movie. Stirling is faithful to the movies, and keep
his characters consistent with those on the big screen. He expands on the story
told in the movies and provides a good deal of background information and detail
on how the Terminator future can to happen. The problem with T2: The Future War
is that most of the plot and themes in the book are so simplistic that I found myself
skimming chapters to get to the paragraphs where SkyNet unleashes a new round of nasty machines upon humanity. The characters were so shallow that I simply did not care what happened to them. To make things worse, the ending is pre-ordained so there was no real suspense in the story.
A more serious problem, however, was that the book was full of cliches. For example, environmentalists and ecologists are portrayed as cold-blooded, fascist who are incapable of thinking for themselves. Stirling seems to be using this book
to editorialize on groups that he does not like, and he assums that his readers share his views. I lost interest after a few chapters.
Stirling has written some very good stories, but this is not one of them. Read The Children's Hour to see Stirling at his best.

He called her "my beloved esposa" because Anna was his dearest love on this earth. Ironically, while the great military exploits of General Stonewall Jackson are studied in military schools the world over and his iron will and stern self-discipline have become legendary, little is said about his remarkable marriage. The real Thomas J. Jackson was a humble Christian and loving husband and father. The tender and instructive letters he wrote to his wife Anna are a model of godly leadership and covenantal faithfulness. From their courtship to their final days together, trace the true story of this remarkable couple through the letters of General Jackson to his bride. Even in the midst of the most arduous military campaigns, Stonewall took the time to send home extensive letters of love and devotion. Through all of this, General Jackson proves himself to be a model example for Christian husbands of the twenty-first century -- especially through his dedication to living for God's glory and trusting in His providential care.
This special edition book features a foreword by Stephen Lang, the actor who portrays "Stonewall" Jackson in the film, Gods and Generals.
Customer Reviews:
The Heart of a Good Man.......2004-04-21
In Beloved Bride: The Letters of Stonewall Jackson to His Wife, Bill Potter presents some of Stonewall's letters to his wife, Anna, written during the war. These letters give a beautiful insight into the mind of the military hero. They show his deep love and respect for his wife, his country and his God.
There are glimpses into their everyday life, as he discusses gardening, tithes, and his consent for one of their slaves to marry. He referrs to Anna as his "dove" or "beloved" or "esposa" and makes it clear that he dearly loves her.
Very little is ever mentioned of the hardships of camplife or war. My guess is that he wished to shield her from that as much as possible. He continually encouraged her to put her faith in God for his protection and reminded her that his life was in God's hands.
His letters show him as a gentle, though strong and steadfast, man, with great respect for others trying hard to live the Christian life. If he treated the troops under his command with the same respect that he seemed to show in all the other aspects of his life, it is no wonder they cheered when they saw him.
Over all, this is a warm, uplifting read that gave me an even greater respect and admiration for Stonewall. It is a nice change to see the private life of a hero match his public life.
Captures the Sterling Character of Jackson in His Letters.......2003-07-21
~Beloved Bride: The Letters of Stonewall Jackson to His Wife~ is a compilation of love letters written by the great Confederate general to his beloved wife. Bill Potter and the Vision Forum have put together a remarkable compilation of letters of the great southern General Thomas Jonathan Jackson better known posthomously after the war as 'Stonewall' Jackson. These letters chronicle Jackson's courtship leading to his marriage with his beloved wife Anna Morrison Jackson as well as the turbulent wartorn years that follow. You really get a feel for the anguish of the soldier on the field-who longs to be at home with wife and child-but realizes he has a duty to country to fulfill. Stonewall stands out not only as a man of brilliant military genius, but as a man of dignity, honor and integrity. He was an accomplished West Point graduate and a renowned professor at VMI. Though he remained a humble and pious man with a deep abiding faith in the Gospel of Christ and a firm steadfast belief in the sovereignty of God. The editor Bill Potter does a remarkable job at offering a cursory background on Jackson and his character. He was an exemplary man of character who loved his wife Anna and his child very deeply. Sadly, he was accidently shot by his own men. But Jackson knew that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to God's purposes (Romans 8:28). (FYI This was one of Jackson's favorite passages of Scripture.) The cover art features a photo shot from the recent blockbuster Gods and Generals of Stephen Lang who played Jackson. I also recommend _Christ in the Camp_, which is a story of religious revival and proclamation of the Gospel during the war between the states by the same publisher.
A Tender Man.......2003-07-15
This book shows how kind and loving Stonewall Jackson was. It is quick reading and easy to understand. It shows you his devotion and shows you the true Stonewall and not the mean and tough person history books portray.
Wonderful!.......2003-05-25
This is a wonderful little book and shows, believe it or not, the "tender" side of General Jackson. While the mere mention of Jackson's immortal sobriquet, "Stonewall," would strike fear in the hearts of Union Army commanders, his wife would one day write of, "...that tender and exquisite phase of his inner life." This book reveals Jackson as a "humble Christian and loving husband father" and bolsters the contention that Jackson is a worthy hero for men and boys today. Buy the book. It's a good place to find an idea, within the pages of this little book called A World Without Words. True to its name, it contains not a single complete sentence. Instead, it is composed of more than 100 pages filled with captivating images. This sweet book is really something to discover, and editor Jasper Morrison promotes exploration by creating an environment in which ingenuity appears in a vast array of forms. He roughly limits the scope to icons--some better known than others--of what we commonly consider the modern world. A short list of some of the images: Alvar Aalto's stacking chairs, a Viennese fire hydrant, a man bending tubes in a factory, photographic studies of French soccer players. In fact, readers might also think of this book as an exercise in pictorial nostalgia, a happily incomplete, nonverbal wrap-up of the modernist condition as we know it. --Loren E. Baldwin

Respond to Visual Stimuli.......2002-12-01
This is a great, small book of images. They are compiled in a systematic arrangement that causes some questioning. I can offer no interpretation of the selection of images, because the experience is so individual. This is an excellent buy for anyone interested in challenging thier visual experiences and expanding thier ideas of non-lyrical viewing.

Writing with the low-key stylishness his subject deserves, British academic Graham McCann pays tribute to the working-class Englishman who became "a democratic symbol of gentlemanly grace" to moviegoers worldwide. Aptly subtitled "A Class Apart," the book sympathetically depicts Archie Leach--born into poverty, his mother committed to an asylum when he was nine--reinventing himself as Cary Grant, whose debonair screen persona showed no signs of these difficult origins. A decorous account of Grant's private life (McCann dismisses talk of bisexuality as mere rumor) accompanies cogent descriptions of his performances.

The Finest Estimate of an Inestimable Performer.......2007-02-24
This book would doubtless be better known, and better publicized, were it not published by a reputable university press. Don't mislead yourself, however. There's nothing tedious about McCann's book, which is very well written and measured in its judgments. Those wanting gossip and sensationalism should look elsewhere. Even those who know Grant's background and career will learn new things here. In a word: a splendid interpretation of an insidpensable performer.
The best biography on Cary Garnt I've read.......2006-04-20
It's detailed and well sourced and actually has quotes from people who actually knew him and lived through these events with the man. I felt like I actually had insight to the man rather than the image and the decades of gossip which seems to have been taken as fact by most of the other Cary Garnt biographers. He tells Cary Grant's story respectfully, but doesnt white wash the facts. The anecdotes as told by Cary's friends are fascinting, sometimes hilariously funny and often sad. He approaches the gossip as a researcher would and doesnt try to speculate or parse subjects to support hiw own personal oint of view or agenda.
This is the third biography I've read about Cary Garnt, and compared to the other very light offerings this was by far the best and most comprehensive. I learned for example that Cary Grant was not only a great charmer, but a shrewd businessman who consistently outwitted the studio bosses at every turn. I enjoyed learning about his incredible sense of honor which often times landed him in hot water and led to many of the vindictive rumors we are still hearing today. He hated the gossip columnists at the time and was embroiled in a very long and bitter battle with the likes of Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons, who he once told to mind her GD business. Got to love the guy.
Great book.
Movie star. Quick, who do you think of? Cary Grant........2004-10-21
Especially if your over 50. He looked, played & acted as the movie star he was. Women loved him. Men would have loved to be him. He was more often seduced than the seducer which was part of his charm. He never forgot who he was & where he came from: Archie Leech from Bristol, England. He was amiable & apolitical yet had a streak of independence & courage that led him to be one of the first stars to break with the studio system. That allowed him to be a free agent & pick the movies he wanted to do. It didn't always work out. Sometimes, the movies stank & he was the best thing in them. But most of his movies were money makers & that was really the only thing that counted. He was admired for his independence. He could be difficult to work with but was not tempermental. He was a professional working to perfect his craft as he liked to put it. This obsession with perfection did not work with the women he loved & he left four failed marriages in his wake. This failing apparently never occurred to him.
He didn't have to be pushed into old man roles & retired on his own terms. A class act.
Over-Detailed And Difficult To Stick With.......2003-12-27
I wish I could say I wasn't disappointed in this book, since I was looking forward to a well-researched and engrossing book on a screen legend. However, I had to force myself to finish reading it and came away with very little enjoyment and appreciation for the subject. Very nearly ONE THIRD of the book (the latter portion) is not textual biography, but a glossary, filmography and voluminous footnote after footnote after footnote of data supporting the main body (2/3) of the book. Far too many distracting footnotes referenced on virtually every page of the book were significantly annoying, and in many instances a point was belabored ad infinitum. Many key points of detail and anecdotes relating to admired, classic CG movies weren't present, while others were - sorry - rather beaten to death. Supporting photographs were limited and failed to include more than good shots of the subject at a small, select time of his life. I expected a more linear, cohesive, colloquial narrative unencumbered by redundent grammatical 'precision.' The book was obviously well-researched, but extreme detail does not always do the subject or the audience justice.
THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ ON CARY GRANT!.......2002-01-27
If you want to find out everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - about Cary Grant then this is the book for you. All other books, including the latest biog, are glitzy and frothy and tell you nothing you hadn't already read if you are a big fan. Also some are not as revelationary as they would like to think.
If you are a serious fan then you can't beat this book.
