GREAT!.......2007-06-17
the book may be a little old.
but it was a great book.
im in the second one now.
i really like his style of writing.
i plan on buying more books by Philip Athans
Not a good book to buy.......2007-04-04
I bought this book because I liked Philip Athans' writing style in other books, Lies of Light, Whisper of Waves, and Annihilation, and because I remember playing this game a long time ago (1999?). I was quite disappointed in this book, and I share previous reviewers' opinions who were also disappointed, such as the lack of character development and motivation for the characters to go from place to place. But what annoyed me was the portrayal of Jahiera. Jahiera is portrayed as some erratic, highly emotional, defenseless damsel in distress. My memory of the game is kinda fuzzy, but I remember Jahiera was DEFINITELY NOT like this. In nearly every fight scene she's screaming. Screaming for Khalid or Abdel to protect or rescue her. Screaming in terror. Screaming in fright. Screaming in horror. Screaming. Screaming. Screaming. And when she actually "fights", she just resorts to kneeing guys in the groin. If they don't have a groin (like spiders), well Jahiera is just screwed. Is Jahiera some 12-year old girl or something? It's pathetic and quite insulting to people who've played Baldur's Gate. The ending of the book was quite abrupt. Climatic fight with the bad guy, Savarok, and that's it. THE END. The author doesn't bother telling us what happens to the characters or the cities afterwards. This book does not do the game any justice.
There are some upsides to this book though. There are a couple of characters that are interesting and humorous, such as the eccentric mage Xzar, and there are a couple of parts that are humorous, so the book isn't a total bomb. I wouldn't recommend buying this book though, but I definitely will not stop buying books from Philip Athans.
Awesome Book.......2007-01-15
If you love the R.A. Salvatore books than read this. Its not by him but I got into this book almost as much as I did his other books.
It will inspire you to write your own books.......2006-12-29
I loved the Baldur's Gate series of games from start to finish, and was very interested in reading the novelization of the first game, because I really enjoyed the story and characters.
This book was terrible from the start, and I ended up reading it right to the finish just to see how bad it was. The main character was extremely unimaginative, boring and almost impossible to relate to. All of the great NPC's from the game Athans decided to use, he threw into the party and then killed them off one by one in horrid sequences that were unjustifiable to them.
Basically if you loved the Baldur's Gate games, do not read this novel. It doesn't even begin to do it justice.
Don't kid yourselves........2006-06-05
Alright. I would attempt to say what I think about this book but to be honest. Everything I wanted to say has been said, and a bag of potato chips.
Mainly I would like to prevent poor readers who see these reviews which are actually good and think, "Hmmmm.. Maybe I should read this book. Since there is this huge issue about it being bad or good." Well, let me ease your minds. It's not good.
I have read many reviews about this book today and I read 2 in particular that irritated me.
1) One person insisted that the writer was forced to make the story loosely based on the game which was not yet released. However, this is false. The game was released a full year before the first printing of this book. Which means, by anyone's estimation, subject to much change after the release of the game. Causing me to assume that the writer had kown to storyline of the game before writing the finished copy of the book.
2) Another person, likely many years ago, said that in order to properly enjoy a book based on a game or Movie we must be able to detach ourselves from the story-line of the game or movie. When your book says it's based on the game, it's asking for comparison. But all that aside, if you were to ignore this books blatant mis-plots and virtual lack of character accuracy, you would see this. A hollow book, where the characters rush randomly from place to place for no good reason. The characters themselves are very 2 dimensional, they have nothing deeper than raw emotions. Each being different. I find that the main character is a 'perfect' character in which it was likely that he was the author's character in the game and therefore has created this image of himself that he wishes to see. Someone whom the woman rush to, who is deep and mysterious (Which, in this case, is limited to random acts of rage derived from a dead father.).
Someone also said that you cannot blame the story-telling on the autor because he took the story from the game. However, if you are changing what you experienced in a game, into a book you must treat it as a new story. If you are going to change the characters, change them on more than one level. Sentient beings do not feel only one raw emotion at a time. We are an unexplainably confused jumple of constant emotion... So how that. For the love of god.
Finally, if you liked this book based on it's literary truths. Wel developed characters, great plot twists and good story-line. Than you have absolutely no right to judge any one else's taste is books. Because if you do not recognize this book for what it truly is, a shame to fantasy. You cannot rightly call yourself a devout reader.
To the author,
If you were to read this, I'm sorry you had to. Know this, I do not doubt your ability to portray a good story. if you couldn't, you wouldn't even be involved in this business. No one is perfect all the time, and you do show the ability to tell a story. So don't be discouraged by any critism. Use it to show your true skills. Good luck

Guest-starring Black Cat!
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2007-09-15
I have read this Graphic Novel and it was the most amazing graphic novel i have ever read. The story was amazing, the artwork was amazing the whole thing is amazing. so if you are even considering to get this book GET it now. Also if you want to know more about the relationship of carnage and venom buy it. if you know nothing at all about the symbiotes you may get confused but even if that is the case it is still amazing.
Wait, is this Ultimate or something?.......2007-07-04
Spider-Man: Venom vs Carnage looks fantastic. Venom and Carnage must be a thrill (and a pain) to draw, and they've never looked scarier than they do in this paperback. When I first opened the book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like the style, but it grows on you pretty immediately, and these are the perfect characters for the style. Spider-Man himself looked, well, ok, but the symbiotes looked amazingly cool, just monstrously terrifying, and that in itself is worth a browse.
However, the writing does not live up to this review at all. Pat Mulligan, AKA Toxin, the new host, is written reacting the way I think most normal people would react in such a horrifying position, and I give Milligan kudos for that. Unfortunately, it seems that Milligan wrote this without first checking older issues of Spider-Man, because there's all sorts of things that are out-of-continuity. First of all, the Black Cat doesn't recognize Venom or Carnage, despite the fact that they've met numerous times, most famously during Maxmimum Carnage. Second, Spider-Man's spider-sense, which is supposed to warn him of immediate personal danger, and cannot sense the symbiotes, somehow detects the symbiotes fighting each other from across town. While Venom warns Carnage that giving "birth" will be an exhausting and painful process, you have to wonder why Venom didn't seem to be aware that he had birthed the "seed" that eventually became Carnage.
At any rate, it's a fun little read, but if you're really familiar with the history of the various characters, you may get hung up on the various inconsistencies throughout.
it was a so-so effort.......2007-05-11
It was definately an interesting book but it had some major flaws. As a stand alone book it is worth reading but the art varies from good to unbearable pretty quick.
This is seen with how huge venom appears which just becomes rediculous. Another problem concerns continuity. What I refer to is The Black Cat not recognizing either venom or Carnage. Anyone who has followed spiderman comics knows that the black cat helped spiderman in the crossover series Maximum Carnage which dealt with both carnage and venom. For her not to know these two is very unlikely.
That is the one thing that really bothered me because it made me feel that the author didn't do research on the characters at all but instead decided to ignore previous histories that these characters had. The whole deal with the birth seemed a bit far-fethced as well. When venom created carnage it was a spur of the moment event that didn't show him to bin in any pain. But carnage acts as if it is a painful experience. That might be nit picking but it seems like it is a bit misjointed when looked at if you remember carnage's origin.
other than these major flaws the story was entertaining and one does want to continue to read the book to find out what happens.
Surprisingly good.......2007-03-11
If you were reading comics during the 90's, chances are you remember the countless mini-series' starring favorite Spider-Man villain Venom. There were quite a bit, and I can't recall a single one that was really anything special. After a long break, Marvel cranked out this mini-series, which gave me a sure fired groan, but I was surprised at how good Venom VS Carnage ends up being. The murderous Carnage is about to have an offspring, much like Eddie Brock, AKA Venom, had years ago that helped spawn him. Knowing this, Venom attempts to do some good and not let this new symbiote end up a murderous psychopath. However, soon enough the offspring finds it's way to a cop, and Toxin is born. What develops next is both surprising and action packed, as Venom and Carnage both play a major hand in deciding the fate of their descendant. Peter Milligan, who has written a handful of excellent and underrated titles like X-Statix and Human Target, writes the story, which is better than one would give it credit for. The art by Clayton Crain (Ghost Rider: Road to Damnation) is nice eye candy as well; providing great renderings of bloody symbiote violence. All in all, despite your memories of Venom in the 90's, this TPB is worth checking out, and with Spider-Man 3 on the horizon, it might be a good time to get yourself a good dose of Venom.
Peter Milligan does it again.......2005-01-19
I honestly would have to say that "Venom v. Carnage" would not be a title that would instantly draw me to a comic book. I am reminded of the many ill fated crossover comics of the 1990s that languish in quarter bins everywhere. And never in a million years would I think that a Venom v. Carnage miniseries would be something that I would actually own a trade paperback of, nonetheless recommend to others.
But I was wrong on all counts. Thankfully. I picked the book up because I was going on a Peter Milligan buying spree before he took over X-Men and probably would not have even touched it had his name not been on it.
I am giving the title four stars overall. I give the story four and a half and the artwork three and a half. The artwork itself seems to be very uneven, amateurish as often as it is amazing. The characters are occasionally difficult to tell apart at first glance. Clayton Crain seems to have been hired to draw the book based on what he can do with the fights between the symbiotes, not anything else in the story. Though he does seem to show a lot of promise as a comic book artist and could very well be doing amazing things in a few years. I still think the series could have had five stars with the same story and a differnet artist.
Peter Milligan's story tells of a police officer who bonds with the symbiotic spawn of Carnage. The police officer is about to become a father for the first time. And there are a lot of fights between Toxin (the new spawn), Venom and Carnage. And Spider Man shows up. It's jolly good fun.

Buddhahood Without Meditation, widely known by its subtitle, Nang-jang (Refining Apparent Phenomena), presents the view of the Great Perfection (Dzogchen) through the approach known as trek-chöd (cutting through solidity).
Customer Reviews:
A Direct Transmission for Reaching Clarity.......2007-07-16
As the subtitle of this book points out, the intent of these visionary accounts is to subtly alter one's awareness of phenomena. The text consists of discrete dream visions recounted by Dudjom Lingpa (1835-1904) in which he posed a question to appearing deities and received a clarification on each particular point. This text pertains to the category of Direct Transmission within the Great Perfection tradition. As such, one receives great benefit simply from its meaning.
The text starts by pointing out the definitive conclusion that one must reach regarding four topics: ineffability, oneness, openness, and spontaneous presence. Dudjom Rinpoche provides a further breakdown of the topic of ineffability, highlighting the need to come to a definitive conclusion regarding personal identity and the identity of phenomena. For modern students this emphasis is perhaps the most important aspect of this book, as it is in exactly these two manifestations of the error of "identity" that most students find themselves stuck. Especially for students raised in the modern American culture with its emphasis on self-independence, self-interest, and self-aggrandizement, this introductory lesson is most beneficial.
Moving beyond the error of positing a "self" underlying "I", Dudjom Rinpoche then tackles the error of imputing identity of phenomena. This error, that particular things are real, is another great stumbling block to reaching clarity.
The text then consists of the dream teachings received by Dudjom Rinpoche in which that definitive conclusion is refined by dispelling remaining misunderstandings.
The book consists of the original text and its english translation, presented in a side-by-side (facing page) format, followed by Dudjom Rinpoche's excellent structural analysis epitomizing the text, followed by an expansive glossary of Tibetan terms, which alone is of great value.
This text is the personal teaching of Dudjom Rinpoche, and one can gain great merit and reach clarity by studying this text and its transmitted meaning.
James Corrigan
An Introduction to Awareness
HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!.......2005-05-11
Hold it right, there. Hold it: right there. That's it!
Okay, I know I'm being a bit obtuse about it, but honestly this is not an easy book to review. So, I will share with you what I can with the hope it is helpful.
Unusually wonderful things do happen. This is an unusually wonderful book, a genuine holy relic.
I have this from good sources: Yes, it's a good idea to bring this book into your life, even if you don't intend to read it, if you are willing to treat the book with the utmost care: "guard it like your eyes". And yes, if you have established for yourself a stable foundation of devotion and proper motivation and meditation, dig in and read.
Dudjom Rinpoche, and Dudjom Lingpa before him, were supremely talented and capable beings. Prophets and discoverers of the most valuable of treasures. This text is such a treasure.
The translators are the real deal, too.
Be ready. Hold it, right, there.
May all beings benefit!
could be better.......2001-12-08
Let me preface this by stating that of course this is an important book, and a translator's job is never easy.
That said, this book benefits from having the original Tibetan available, but suffers from a overly wordy phenomenologically influenced style of translation. Frankly, I have to read the Tibetan to understand what the translator is trying to convey in English
In general, a problem endemic with translations of Dzogchen texts is that the translators often unncessarily make what is relatively straight forward language in Tibetan a conceptual mess in English in their attempt to convey the meaning of Dzogchen into English.
a holy relic.......2001-01-21
This is a text usually reserved for those with years of personal guidance under a master, who would then explain the basically esoteric statements and explanations. However, those who do have some experience in Tantric Buddhism, especially Dzogchen, will likely benefit from studying this. As Chagdud Tulku explains at the start of the book, this text should be regarded as a holy object of veneration, and even to keep this on one's altar until transmission is received will bring blessings. The text is a compilation of visionary experiences had by Dudjom Lingpa, a famous lama-yogi of the 19th century. His next reincarnation, Jigdral Yeshe Dorje (Dudjom Rinpoche) edited them into the present format, and created a helpful outline of topics, appended to the translation.
Extraordinary openess of secret visions.......1999-02-06
Keep your mind in the sky, feet on the ground! Remain in the primordial state, even when you walk around!

The Best Cookbook in my house since 1979!!!.......2005-12-18
I am not a gourmet cook, but I like to eat good food. This little cookbook has less than 100 pages, but presents approximately 300 delicious, authentic Mexican recipes that are very easy to prepare. Nothing is complicated and the pictures are nice. None of the recipes take more than an hour to prepare.
No overload of information. If you want to serve good Mexican meals that go beyond burritos, beans and rice, then this is for you. My husband is from Guanajuato, Mexico and these recipes have consistently pleased him. The meatball soup, Pollo de Augascalients, and chicken in peanut sauce are some of our particular favorites.
I have been using this cookbook since 1979. If you love to cook, or are already an above-average cook who is well-versed in Mexican cuisine, this cookbook may be too simplistic. Otherwise, this is it!
I would like to find more cookbooks in this particular series, such as Russian, Indian and Italian.
Product Description
This book was originally offered as 'Today's Easy Mexican Cooking' by Tupperware. You'll find much more in 'Simple Mexican Cooking' than just tacos and enchiladas. You'll discover an intriguing variety of authentic Mexican appetizers, side dishes, main dishes, and desserts, too! And you know these recipes will taste great and go together in no time, because they've been tested by the experts at Better Homes and Gardents. The features include 70 new and exciting recipes, more than 20 full-color folld photographs, preparation and cooking times with each recipe, a colorful glossary, highlighting cheeses, chile peppers, and other ingredients used in Mexican cuisine, and dozens of helpful cooking hints and historical tidbits about Mexican cuisine.

Great photos and reference, a must for collectors.......1999-10-29
A fun book, AND informative. Doesnt look like it is intended to fill everyones needs, but to "add-to" your reference library, or just to leave out to enjoy!
great source of information and terrific photographs.......1999-04-24
an extremely usable book. gives a great history of marionettes in general and about more than 25 different companies who made marionettes. GREAT pictures. the different marionettes are clearly described and pictured with current 'values' assigned to each one pictured. contains information on how to date many characters. the character index is wonderful. if you collect string puppets or marionettes you need to own this book.
Nice pictures, but low on content........1999-03-22
The photography in the book was wonderful and I've really enjoyed the pictures. Would have liked more history and text on each major manufacturer and for the book to be organized just by manufacturer; it is a little disjointed as it is currently organized. Glad to have it for the pics, but left me wanting a more comprehensive guide and more price info.
