5 out of 5 stars Above and beyond with Grave Digger and Coffin Ed!.......2000-07-05

From start to finish Chester takes you up, down and around Harlem with a rollicking hunger for action and mahem that no other writer can match. No one can beat Himes for his quick and pungent study of character and personality. He possesses a gift for weaving details into a break-neck romp of action and interaction that no other writer can touch. Starting with the exaulted voice of Sweet Prophet Brown on steamy 117th Street in Harlem searching for the truth and the money through an astonishing series of events that allows us a slice of history we will only find with this gifted writer. He'll make you laugh when you know you shouldn't and introduce you to people you'll never meet. Follow his lead. You won't forget or regret!

                Book Description

Martha Macnamara knows that her daughter Elizabeth is in trouble, she just doesn't know what kind. Mysterious phone calls from San Francisco at odd hours of the night are the only contact she has had with Elizabeth for years. Now, Elizabeth has sent her a plane ticket and reserved a room for her at San Francisco's most luxurious hotel. Yet she has not tried to contact Martha since she arrived, leaving her lonely, confused and a little bit worried. Into the story steps Mayland Long, a distinguished-looking and wealthy Chinese man who lives at the hotel and is drawn to Martha's good nature and ability to pinpoint the truth of a matter. Mayland and Martha become close in a short period of time and he promises to help her find Elizabeth, making small inroads in the mystery before Martha herself disappears. Now Mayland is struck by the realization, too late, that he is in love with Martha, and now he fears for her life. Determined to find her, he sets his prodigious philosopher's mind to work on the problem, embarking on a potentially dangerous adventure.

3 out of 5 stars OH, The Potential.......2007-06-01

Several people told me to read this book and I did, but, I must admit to a bit of disappointment.
The story line was original and the plot worked but it didn't have the flesh to it. It wasn't satisfying at all. I understand that the next in the series is better but this one fell a bit flat for me.
Also the constant description of the physical attributes of the main characters got to me a bit. I would love to see it re-released but with much more about the Black Dragon and much more interaction between the characters. I didn't hate it, but I expected much more from it.

                5 out of 5 stars Oolong tea.......2007-02-02

I read this book as a teenager. The story was so compelling that I have never forgotten what it was about.

I bought as many copies as I could and gave them as gifts to my nieces and nephews... they loved the story as much as I did.. but they still think I am insane for giving them all the same book.

...."wait until they find out there is a part 2" .... (cue mad scientist FX)

4 out of 5 stars An intrigue of a little story.......2006-07-17

This little book is a quick magical read. I agree with the reviewer who said, "It very nearly defies description". It is unlike anything I've ever read, very original. While having said all this, and yes it was delightful, there were a few things that threw me out of the story. The daughter's storyline somehow didn't "fit" with the tale, even the action scenes seemed wrong somehow. And there were just so many unexplained things about Oohlong, and no follow-up. Where do they go from here? It was just a bit too strange for me. But beautiful nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars One of my faves.......2006-03-14

A fairly short read, Tea with the Black Dragon is a marvel in how it intertwines magic and realism in a modern day setting. The lead characters have a magical charm and real world quality that hold you within the story.

Take a cup of adventure, a cup of mystery, toss in a zen master that is unaware of her lightness of being, and mix with an ancient Oriental dragon. Bake for a couple hours at medium heat in the afternoon sun with a pitcher of lemonade and you have a day-off well spent.

                5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Treasure.......2005-01-03

This is one of the books I share with people I really like. It very nearly defies description. The closest I can come is to say that I know magic when I see it, and this is magic. Mayland Long is an enigmatic oriental gentleman who just might be the human incarnation of a Chinese Dragon. Martha MacNamara is a fiftyish woman who plays fiddle in an Irish jig band, and she just may be the Zen master that Mayland Long has been waiting for. Together, they unravel a mystery that makes San Francisco of the nineteen-eighties seem as sinister and magical as any land ever depicted in a fantasy novel. Tea With the Black Dragon was written twenty years ago, so the computer technology is severely dated, but that doesn't really detract from the story. If you're anything like me, you'll be so swept up in this book that you won't notice anyway.

If you love sci-fi with lots of action, subtle love and weird happenings this is the book to read. All of the Dancer series are among the best I have ever read. Start with Fire Dancer so you know the story line and read them all. I just finished the third book of the series and am looking for more. I hope Ann Maxwell wrote more because I am hooked on this series. This is definitely a saver along with her other books. Read this book for pure pleasure and you will see what I mean.

                    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2001-04-22

I am an avid sci-fi reader, and can't understand why this was considered a romance. The characters were enticing, and added a flavorful theme.I do wish that Ann will finish off this three book series(Fire Dancer, Dancer's Luck, and Dancer's Illussion.)This is a must read book that will leave you salivating for more.

2 out of 5 stars This is it!.......1997-10-23

I can't believe my eyes. Why did you do it? After such a great start in "Fire Dancer"?!? I don't get it. Yes the chemistry is still there, yes it was great to read more about Reba and Kirtn, but who is this, this BOZO! I hated him, the caracter was a spineless, little fool with a toothy smile so sweet that it's rotting! I'm sorry the story line with that guy, just didn't cut it for me.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read in a long time........1997-09-19

Dancer's Luck is a wonderful book, the perfect sequel to Fire Dancer. Reba and Kirtn are great characters, full of action and suspense, but fun as well. I can't wait to read more about them

Like Fire Dancer before this, Ann Maxwell offers new, lovable aliens. With fire in her hands Reba flames her way across the universe.

Pippa is a successful author in her late 30s who fancies herself as a matchmaker since she's set up several couples. A true romantic, she believes she is too self-absorbed with her own interests and particularly her writing to devote to a mate.
She meets Joshua Luck on an airplane and is immediately captivated by his sheer physical presence and animal magnetism. Pippa trades seats with someone else in order to get close to him and then tells him she's a novelist and she'd like to get to know him, simply for research purposes. Wink, wink :) Josh is kind of put off by this brazen woman but, like everyone else in her orbit, cannot resist Pippa's gravitational pull.
They begin a hot love affair on board the cruise ship. Pippa meets Josh's brother Joe, who's a psychic. And there she goes matchmaking again, this time setting Joe up with a troubled fellow passenger on board the ship.
This is another steamy Lacey Dancer book. There are others which interconnect that precede and follow this book. "Flight of the Swan" follows Pippa's and Joshua's marriage and she helps set up this couple. "Diamond on Ice" is the story of Pippa's nephew and his love interest. Either "Silent Enchantment" or "Sunlight on Shadows" also preceded "13 Days." Those two titles are too similar for me to remember which is which. There may be more books with Pippa in them, but I can't think of 'em if there are.

                          Book Description

This book covers the eventful years from 1938 to 1946 from the prelude to war to World War II itself. It is the story of this all-Canadian show , the Canadian Army Show (CAS) that forms the bulk of the author's story as she explains its origins and brings its creators into the spotlight. She describes the shows they took to the front, tells of close calls for the units as they entertained Canada's troops in Italy and France, recounts her personal sorrow at the loss of her RAF fiance', and then concludes with the remarkable story of CAS's last show overseas when, at war's end, 200 dancers, singers, actors and riders performed in the extravaganza, Rhythm Rodeo, entertaining more than 40,000 of Canada's soldiers waiting for transport home.

This is a great story and one that needed to be told by someone who was on the inside, who was there when show biz practicalities clashed with army discipline, who witnessed the pain and hard work and laughter that was behind the exceptional success of this company, who can at last give these soldier/performers their historical due.

Since its publication in the mid-eighteenth century, Hume's discussion of miracles has been the target of severe and often ill-tempered attacks. In this book, one of our leading historians of philosophy offers a systematic response to these attacks.

Arguing that these criticisms have--from the very start--rested on misreadings, Robert Fogelin begins by providing a narrative of the way Hume's argument actually unfolds. What Hume's critics (and even some of his defenders) have failed to see is that Hume's primary argument depends on fixing the appropriate standards of evaluating testimony presented on behalf of a miracle. Given the definition of a miracle, Hume quite reasonably argues that the standards for evaluating such testimony must be extremely high. Hume then argues that, as a matter of fact, no testimony on behalf of a religious miracle has even come close to meeting the appropriate standards for acceptance. Fogelin illustrates that Hume's critics have consistently misunderstood the structure of this argument--and have saddled Hume with perfectly awful arguments not found in the text. He responds first to some early critics of Hume's argument and then to two recent critics, David Johnson and John Earman. Fogelin's goal, however, is not to "bash the bashers," but rather to show that Hume's treatment of miracles has a coherence, depth, and power that makes it still the best work on the subject.

                                    2 out of 5 stars A mistake.......2007-08-22

This book is a sympathetic attempt to uphold a popular image of the philosophical qualities of David Hume, especially with regard to his critique of religion. The classical interpretation of the essay on miracles by Hume cannot pass philosophical scrutiny and this, I suggest, has moved admirers of Hume since the middle of the twentieth century to construct a reinterpretation that is more tenable. This book clearly is a new attempt to set forth this reinterpretation. However, the classical interpretation is compelling on both historical and internal grounds. Some recent discussions, this book included, about the validity of Hume's arguments betray a lack of information about the historical setting and epistemological presuppositions of Hume's essay. I strongly suggest anyone who studies Hume's essay on miracles to read "The Great Debate on Miracles, from Joseph Glanvill to David Hume" by R.M. Burns. I've read quite a number of books and articles on this topic, but Burns is the only really indispensible resource. I'm sure, if mr. Fogelin had read it (it's absent in his literature), he would not have written this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent defense of Hume........2005-12-31

After reading Earman's HUME'S ABJECT FAILURE, I thought Hume's argument against miracles was dead. Now, after having reading Fogelin's A DEFENSE OF HUME ON MIRACLES, I appreciate the argument more than ever. Fogelin's exposition makes sense of a number of things about "Of Miracles" that always puzzled me. Fogelin effectively argues that Hume never offered an a priori argument, or even a knockdown argument against testimony on behalf on miracles, and shows how Part II of "Of Miracles" is just as essential to Hume's real argument as Part I.

A DEFENSE OF HUME ON MIRACLES also contains responses to the recent criticisms of Johnson and Earman, a discussion of how Hume's argument against miracles relates to other aspects of his philosophy, an appendix treating Hume's use and abuse of Tillotson, and a second appendix reprinting "Of Miracles", which the reader will definitely want to have handy.

The one thing I felt would have made the book even better was detailed assessment by Fogelin of the merits of the argument he reconstructs, which I thought still makes very interesting and controversial claims about testimony and evidence. Although Fogelin seems sympathetic, it is often difficult to tell whether he is agreeing with Hume altogether, or just pointing out that he did not make one or another mistake commonly attributed to him. But proper exegesis and interpretation must come before assessment, and Fogelin's book goes a long way towards establishing that necessary foundation.

Knowing author Hal Boggess, I know his knowledge is second to none in the field of hunting collectibles. The photographs are just super and the price of the book is very reasonable. Books in this same field sell for double or triple the price and not nearly as well written as Mr. Boggess.

All photographs are in COLOR. Amazing. This is just what we in the sporting collectible field need. I have read this book over and over. This is just the book needed by the hunting collectible community.

His current listed item values is certainly in line with the current sporting collectible market. The values are listed below each of over 1100 color photographs.

The book is well planned and organized and does an excellent job revealing Mr. Boggess' knowledge of hunting collectibles. Expert photography in combination with high grade paper stock do an outstanding job of detailing the presentations for easy identification. What a great combination if there were a follow-up book highlighting fishing collectibles!

                                        Book Description

This is the first comprehensive study on Mary Magdalene in those second and third century Gnostic texts in which Jesus' most famous female follower gains a prominent position. Special attention is paid to the way Mary is presented in relation to other disciples, and to how her portrait pertains to gender imagery used in the writings. Detailed text analyses, based on a careful philological study, show that no uniform picture and use of the figure of Mary can be traced. Contrary to a common supposition, the book also demonstrates that the positive view of Mary displayed in the texts does not automatically imply a positive attitude towards women in general. The work provides a basis for all further discussion of Mary Magdalene in the Nag Hammadi and related documents.

4 out of 5 stars An Intellectual Treatment of the Da Vinci Code .......2006-06-11

While this book will never make it to the silver screen, it is researched and written throughtfully. The author accurately describes the meaning of the love of Jesus toward Mary of Magdela. It was the love of a teacher to a prize student. One who he could count on, who understood the rivalries among men, but remained his friend, confidant and vigil.

As recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, Mary of Magdela was not a prostitute. She was a prosperous handmaiden and business woman in the period preceding her transformation by Jesus. This period was marked by corruption and brutality. Mary of Magdela was a member of Jesus's inner circle. While the Apostle Peter lamented that Mary did not belong because she was a woman and not worthy, Jesus defended her place as his most favored.

At this point, I suspect the Roman Catholic Church differs with the author. The author asserts the inclusion of Mary of Magdela in the inner circle along with another Mary, Simon's sister presented a form of jealousy of the all men apostles. Peter is quoted in The Book of Thomas as accusing Jesus of loving Mary of Magdela more than he loved the others.

The Nag Hammadi Codices are far from being completely translated, but these early Coptic writings cast a more gentle and accepting attitude of the inherent intelligence of women.
Further in the beginning there existed a more a-sexual attitude of God. Fears of the ruling order in subsequent centuries quelled the notion of the a-sexual God, cast Mary of Magdela in a saved sinner role and altered substantially the view of women. Significantly, the role of Eve as the temptress with all of the sexual stereotypes associated with her remain today to a degree. It was a more convenient, more black and white version of the beginning of man. This was finalized by the death of the Gnosist movement, destruction of the Coptic codices and a Papal Bull banning their interpretations and writings in the 4th century. These codices were hidden by Byzanntine Monks and discovered in the mid-twentieth century.

Jesus appreciated and loved Mary Magdela. He trusted her opinion , he trusted her loyalty and she never disappointed him. This was the love he expressed. His confidence in her, not a carnal love described by Mr. Brown's popular silver screen summer book. The truth is more interesting and more is to come in the future.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Work.......2005-02-24

Don't let the title of this book deceive you. This book is a very thorough look at the position of Mary Magdalene in Jesus' eyes and in the eyes of the Apostles. At times she appears as an equal, while at other times she appears higher than the others.

This is a scholarly book, but is the definitive word on Mary's place in Jesus' life. From the title one might expect something salacious, but that is far from the case.

I enjoy Marjanen's interpretations better than Ms. Pagels'. While I don't read Coptic, Aramaic or Greek, when I review some of her references it seems she takes liberties with her interpretations to prove her point, while Marjanen takes a very measured, rational approach.

Of the books I've read in this genre, this book provides the most insight into the dynamics of the personalities surrounding Jesus. It's definitely worthy of 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars An in-depth, scholarly look at the Gnostic Mary Magdalene........1999-01-18

This book provides plenty of information of gnosticism, the Nag Hammadi texts, and on the gnostic Mary Magdalene, one who has nothing in common with the helpless weeping prostitute of legend or the barely existent Mary Magdalene of the Gospels. Marjanen is a feminist reader of these texts, though his rhetorical strategies are not what I would consider feminist, since he is consummately nasty about the work of other scholars, particuarly women. This work is useful in exploring the idea of the feminine, and possibly the role of women, in the early Christian church and gnostic movement. Minor criticism: Marjanen assumes a scholarly audience that reads some ancient languages, so sometimes he doesn't translate everything he should. Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels is a lot more fun to read.

1 out of 5 stars Very wordy academic treatise containing few words of bible........1998-10-28

Someone please explain this book to me.

I read it trying to find out what the early early church said about women.

The book was very thorough in interpreting what was of no interest to 'Thomas' readers.

                                                Book Description

The five German plays by Leonhard Culmann (c. 1500-1561), originally published between 1539 and 1547, are typical in quality and structure for much of the dramatic production of the time. This is a text-edition of same, preceded by an extensive biography and followed by a voluminous apparatus of notes on the texts. A full bibliography is appended. "In this virtual Culmannus redivivus the author has made a major contribution to Sixteenth-Century literary studies as well as provided an exacting model for similar endeavors" (Peter Schaeffer in Renaissance Quarterly 36,2, 1983).
