Recommended by Library Journal, Elias Miguel Munoz's fourth novel introduces Gina Domingo, who has been called the female version of Salinger's Holden Caulfield. Fourteen-year-old Gina's quest for identity in California's pop culture and for freedom from overprotective parents takes a sudden turn when her Cuban grandmother comes to visit. Her bizarre abuelita enchants Gina with stories of Cuba that drift across the young woman's mind like beloved movies. Before Gina can say "there's no place like home," she realizes that Estela's stories and letters have recreated Gina's heritage, a past of pain and great beauty. Gina travels to Cuba to meet her relatives and to encounter the missing pieces that place her contemporarily within her family history. In doing so, she understands that she and Estela are already creating a brand-new memory of self. --Susan Swartwout
Book Description
Gina Domingo lives in the world of California pop culture. Like Salinger's Holden Caulfield or the heroines of Joyce Carol Oates's Foxfire, Gina is a voice so engrossing in her perception of herself, her Cuban American family and friends--that we find ourselves mesmerized.

Kept my son spellbound! Great book!.......2006-04-12
My son is 9 years old, reading at a 4th grade level. I bought this book for him and he was completely enthralled! It was pretty spooky but not too scary, and he really liked that feeling. Every night at dinner he would tell us what was happening in the book. It was just the right reading level, with some new vocabulary words that he has now mastered. Great job! I will look for other books by this author.

In which voodoo economics takes on a new meaning.......2005-06-21
"You dream of some pastel, mythical country called the United States as you imagine it was forty or fifty years ago, a place that never really existed, and you pander to the prejudices of millions of people who share the same fantasy. The people who are trying to manipulate you dream of a falling eagle, a kind of fascist America where they're free to do just about any damn thing they please without fear of any embarrassing questions being asked by bothersome elected officials who suspect some of the pranks they pull may not really be in the best interests of national or global security. It's a game to them...a Great Game..."
- Mongo Frederickson to politician, herein
DREAM OF A FALLING EAGLE opens in the same style that THE COLD SMELL OF SACRED STONE did, and reads as though it's picking up in the middle of the previous book's cliffhanger and continuing the previous book's story. Here, though, that's not the case; the previous book had nothing to do with DREAM's plot.
DREAM picks up in mid-stanza, as it were, with Mongo and Garth already in mid-investigation for a Presidential Commission that's looking into the question of reorganizing, if not abolishing, the CIA's Operations Directorate. Consequently, the book contains a lot of exposition explaining the story so far, which is a pity because the background sounds as though it would've been interesting - particularly how the Frederickson brothers managed to dig up the information without being killed.
Part of the effect is achieved not by excellence in telling this story but in depending on the quality of suspense stories by quite different writers. Much of DREAM's backstory is supplied simply by saying that, like the plot in the TV series THE PRISONER, the CIA maintained its own "village" for on-the-shelf agents, whether retired or untrustworthy - in this case, supposedly in Haiti. DREAM's conclusion, at the opposite end of the book, seems like an uncredited ripoff of THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (the original novel).
One good scene, introducing a more active subplot and (of course) ultimately connected investigation involves a sanitation worker who's an ex-con and freelance poet, who wants the Fredericksons to find out who's been plagiarizing his work in literary journals. Garth pushes Mongo to take the case on the grounds that they can help Thomas Dickens, while their efforts at cleaning up the CIA seem unlikely to have a long-term effect. Unfortunately, that plot doesn't get enough development to make the story a more active investigation.
Points of interest:
- Lots of dead bodies, many of which are "voodoo ritual murders".
- Zombies.
- Torture.
- Insignificant involvement of significant others, despite dealing with very unscrupulous opponents and throwing in a far-too-rushed appearance of both Mary and Harper in the epilogue.
- Increased use of Francisco, Mongo's assistant at Frederickson & Frederickson.
- Insufficient use of Mongo's intelligence connections (one of whom was Director of Operations only a few books back).
- Insufficient tie-ins with THE LANGUAGE OF CANNIBALS, which makes DREAM sound like an isolated diatribe against the evils of the CIA, disconnected from narrative reality.

Tripping over his political paranoia again..........2003-08-17
I've generally loved Chesbro's books, but in this one and in the Language of Cannibals, he prefers to launch political diatribes rather than worry about telling a story. Whether you agree or not with his left wing tirades that turn aging hippies and former communists into heroes (as in Cannibals), if you're fair and objective, you'll agree that his eagerness to make a point interferes with his normal storytelling prowess, and his paranoia becomes a Johnny-one-note theme. The entire plot, from the opening sentence, is a long, paranoid tirade. Read some of the finer books in this series like Rings, Shadow of a Broken Man, etc.
Mongo, voodoo, CIA and Republicans: They're all in this book.......1997-04-04
Not Chesbro's best Mongo book, but any
Mongo adventure is a good read (at least
for me). Substitute 1997 U.S.
Congress and its majority leader into
the political references, add recent
headlines of dubious CIA activities,
mix in voodoo, violent, gory deaths,
and stir with Mongo and brother Garth
in some near-death experiences.
The result is paranoia, politics
and adventure (not necessarily in
that order).

mongo is always worth visiting.......1997-03-28
Mongo is one of those few characters who never wears thin. Chesbro's plots are always on the goofy-paranoid side, and this one is no exception. Don't get me wrong, the plot moves along and holds together, but one has to suspend disbelief immediately upon opening the book. But don't read this or any Mongo mystery for the plot, as fun and fantastic as it may be. Read it for the character, Mongo, and his brother and friends. There is no more likable character, detective or otherwise, in fiction. Chesbro's narrative voice is always pitched perfectly, and even if you don't buy his politics, you can't help but like him. Read it. Then go back and read them all
Book Description
Spiritual Mind Treatment can seem very simple in concept, yet exasperating to learn. The instructions are clear. You follow every step. You are committed to "see it through" and realize your goal until one day you look around and wonder to yourself, "Well, where is it?"
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Many people embark on their New Thought path only to meet these same obstacles feeling frustrated, discouraged, and even betrayed when their Treatment seems to fail.
HOW TO USE SPIRITUAL MIND TREATMENT offers helpful guidelines to understanding the key elements of this life-changing practice that was first introduced by Ernest Holmes in the early 1900's. Part I is a "how to" that explains what spiritual mind treatment is, how it works, and how to use it. Part II is a troubleshooting section that tells you what to do when treatment doesn't seem to work along with a16-item questionnaire to help identify the problem. This section also includes practical information on the following topics:
The Most Common Self-Defeating Mind States How to Eliminate Self-Defeating Mind States Counter-Intentionality There is no limit to the good that can be realized through spiritual mind treatment. Properly understood and utilized, the practice can be used to improve your health, fitness, relationships, finances, career, creativity, spirituality, or well-being. All that is required is an open mind, a sincere heart, and a willingness to be gently persistent in one's practice.

Good As a Supplement To SOM or Other New Thought Books.......2007-06-17
Good book on spiritual mind treatments that beginners and more advance practioners can benefit from. I would say use it as a supplement to Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes or any of his other beautiful books many of which are written in early 20th Century language, and can sometimes be tough to decipher. Nonetheless the principles are the same then as they are today, with a few minor adjustments which the author explains. I bought the book because I have been working on a creative project which has taken me sometime now to manifest, almost 3 years so I was curious to know what some of the blockages are. For many including myself if comes down to fear, disquised in some shape or form as hate, self-worth issues, fear of the unknown, and the list goes on and on. I am so clear now and realize that my good is here and i KNOW IT that im just as excited know as I will be when it manifest in the visual world. Bottom line I dont think you can do wrong with this book, but again I'd say to use it more as a supplement to Ernest Holmes, Raymond Charles Barker or any of the other teachers of new thought.
Book Description
International culinary borders are gradually disappearing, opening up a world of new cooking pleasures for everyone. At the turn of this century, we started gently adopting new culinary habits. We are not talking about "ethnic" or "exotic" cooking any longer, as these terms imply far away places and not necessarily authentic. No longer is it strange or foreign to cook Chinese, Indian, or Mexican food. Today's approach consists of finding one's culinary inspirations wherever one can. In earlier times, to try ethnic cooking was considered bold, but today it is part of our daily trip to the local supermarket. To find exotic ingredients used to require the skills of a good detective or adventurous friends willing to carry strange foods from foreign lands. Today these can be found at most grocery stores. We are not afraid any longer of spices, unusual containers, or colorful fruit-we have learned how to use them. Even better, we have learned how to adapt them into our everyday lives. The whole world comes naturally into kitchens, with all of its fresh flavors, fully intact; at the same time we are discovering different eating traditions and dieteac principles, which open our minds to recollection and meditation. Our kitchens have become a natural melting pot of fusion food, and what used to be unusual is now so familiar that its foreign origins are forgotten. Cafe Food from around the World is an exciting new series created in the spirit of fusion food, bringing the best of casual dining from different parts of the world into your kitchen. Begin your day sunny side up with over 50 breakfast recipes. Feast on the freshest fruits and juices, from a Raspberry and Melon Yogurt drink to ameal-in-one Banana Milk. Become an expert on eggs, from breakfast souffles to Eggs Benedict, or rise to the challenge with breakfast breads and cakes.

Lots of good information throughout. What makes it worth buying are translations in back. Lots of great sea designs.......1999-11-11
There are three sheets of clear blue plastic with 15 stencil designs. The first sheet contains large mammals, etc. like whale, dolphin and shark. The other sheets contain other sea creatures, such as shells, lobsters and crabs, turtle, and a sea horse.
All designs are large and open, and would therefore be easy for kids to use. I wish the plastic was of a little heavier gauge though. The light blue plastic seems a little fragile to be used by kids.

This is just a fake book, a line of melody and box-picture guitar chords. No harmony, no bass. All of that intricate guitar work on the CD isn't in here, just the basic melody line - most of which doesn't sound like the CD anyway. A truly terrible book, considering how amazing the CD was.

EXCELLENT REFERENCE WORK.......2006-09-25
This 99-page work is invaluable for the naturalist, the practicing physician and - as in my case - a pathologist who uses it as a resource for presenting second-year lectures at a medical school. Each poisonous plant is given a fine one page monograph, which describes the morphology,
poisonous parts, symptoms of intoxication and other information, together with a monocolor drawing(s). What amazed me was that the author is described on the back cover as former elementary school teacher who became a professional author of fiction and nonfiction; she did not have a formal biological background, but acquired this knowledge by self-motivated research. It is an outstanding accomplishment. (Drawings are excllent also - done by another lady).

Long in the Tooth.......2006-12-05
I think this is a worthwhile book to own even though its 1996 publishing date makes it a bit dated. It's worth adding to one's collection, but because of some shortcomings should not be the only book of its type on one's shelf.
by English vet; limited usefulness for American dog owners.......1997-12-22
This dog care book is well written and illustrated but written for an English audience rather than American. Differences in language can be confusing: for example "animal-care assistants" are refered to as "unqualified". In US English, "unqualified" means "incompetent". In the Queen's English, "unqualified" means that one has not been admitted to a profession (eg: vet). More serious problems in the book include the ommission of some diseases that occur in the US, such as "corona virus", a potentially greater killer of puppies. Also, this book has NO information whatever on spaying or neutering a dog. In the US, almost all responsible persons spay or neuter, and the surplus dog population mainly comes from irresponsible low-lifes. In contrast, in England it is much less common for even responsible persons to spay or neuter. Indeed, some vets consider it quite immoral.

Book Description
Luke's story of Paul's prolonged imprisonment under the Romans provides readers with an unexpected setting for considering the proclamation of the word. This narrative-critical study explores the custody settings of Acts 21-28 as places that frame and amplify the detained Paul's social marginality to powerful interests that have a stake in his ministry and contends that the settings serve as new venues for Paul's continuing yet redirected missionary vocation. The book provides a penetrating discussion of the relationship between the young church and imperial Rome, suggesting that the accounts of Paul's activity and divine assistance, coming precisely within the settings intended to enforce Roman control, constitute subtle yet powerful confrontation and manipulation of the social and religious powers.

Nick Waplington published his first collection of photos, Living Room, documenting life in a housing project in Nottingham, England, in 1991. The Wedding a second collection of photos from Nottingham, takes the marriage of Janet and Clive as a loose organizing principle. In months of work, Waplington captured the sometimes disheveled existence of working men and women who revel in the difficult lives they lead. Whether they capture children scrambling over furniture or neighbors enjoying a beer and a smoke together, these photographs convey with great intimacy the telling details of lives that are rich with tumultuous emotions and deep friendships.
Book Description
Loving, sparring, partying, cavorting, drinking, smacking, preening--the boisterous family crowding the canvas of British photographer Nick Waplington's The Wedding has spirit to spare. "The opposite of instant pictures," writes novelist and critic John Berger of Waplington's work, "these photos are as lasting for a lifetime as tattoos, yet all they show is a split second. . . . Life breathes through every one."
Over the course of four years, Waplington became intimately acquainted with two large, working-class families residing in a municipal housing estate in Nottingham, England. The resulting book, Living Room (Aperture, 1991), proved the photographer had achieved an entirely unself-conscious relationship with his subjects.
Five years later, Waplington is still shooting. He revisits his Nottingham friends in The Wedding, a colorful, lively visual narrative with the mesmerizing flow of a soap opera. Times have changed in one of the living rooms. The kids are older and Mum is on the verge of a new marriage. With the wedding as a centerpiece, Waplington plunges into the midst of a communal group whose upbeat lifestyle seems able to overcome all obstacles.
Waplington's vibrant color images and text pulse with a visceral energy that cannot fail to draw us in. Presenting domestic drama at its most immeditately engaging and contemporary photography at its most free-wheeling, Nick Waplington's The Wedding is a singular artistic experience.
Working with Waplington, the cuting-edge British writer Irvine Welsh, author of Acid House, contributes an essay illuminating the social and political context for Waplington's work. Waplington also provides a personal introduction chronicling the evolution of the "Living Room" project, his intensely close relationship with his extended family, and the nine years he has spent photographing them.

Much Praise.......2001-06-15
I must admit. I only picked up this book because Irvine Welsh had a small part in its content. I am very happy I did though. It is a very charming look at a families build up to a wedding, as well as the ceremony and reception. What makes this book so unique, is two things. One, this is no "ideal" family. Two, Waplington was able to capture some rare moments with his photographs. Flipping through the pages, you can get caught in their lives. I almost felt a part of the family. As though I was in the same run down house, with children running all about me. Walpington lives with his subjects. In doing this, he is able to show us a side to their lives you would not usually see in a photograph. I can not praise this book enough. Once again, my love of Irvine Welsh, has introduced me to a gem. This book is worth the time and money and should be noticed.
Book Description
In the West, the idea of autonomy is often associated with a sense of freedom--a self-interested state of being unfettered by rules or obligations to others. This original anthropological study explores a type of "obedient" autonomy that thrives on setbacks, blossoms as more rules are imposed, and flourishes in adversity. Obedient Autonomy analyzes this model, and explains its precepts through examining the specialized and highly organized discipline of archaeology in China.
The book follows Chinese students on their journey to becoming full-fledged archaeologists in a bureaucracy-saturated environment. Often required to travel in teams to the countryside, archaeologists are uniquely obliged to overcome divisions among themselves, between themselves and their peasant-workers, and between themselves and bureaucratic officials. This analysis reveals how these interactions provide teachers of archaeology with stories used to foster obedient autonomy in their students. Moreover, it demonstrates how this form of autonomy enables a person to order and control their future careers in what appears to be a disorderly and uncertain world.
A masterly contextualization of archaeology in China, Obedient Autonomy shows how the discipline has accommodated itself to a Chinese social structure, and uncovers the moral, ethical, political, and economic underpinnings of that context. It will be accessible to students of anthropology even as it will provoke Euro-American archaeologists and interest social theorists of science, philosophers, gender theorists, and students of Chinese society.

Great Class Text.......2004-04-25
It's great as a class text because it's not too verbose and esoteric. You'll get a firm understanding about the manifold issues involving the Chinese rule of law and their interaction with social contracts amongst majority and minority interest groups. In addition, there is a great exposition on the separation of powers doctrine within this socialscape.
