The translation on this book, a total challenge.......2000-03-08
The narrative force of this book makes that this novel describes the very same life of the author using characters, handle them with so much mastery, that pass so easily from the remembrances of the author's to reality. In fact, all the characters existed and they are taken to this novel from the memories of Alicia Yanez with her very own style and beauty to a novel.
Book Description
Darquiel har Aralis is different from any other har. After a disastrous attempt to incept his closest friend, he attracts the attention of the mysterious Thiede, and learns that his origins are more astounding than he imagined. Loki har Aralis is the favoured son of the Tigrons in Immanion. When he is kidnapped to the stark realm of Thanatep, he must learn to walk the secret ways between the worlds before he can escape. The struggle between these two brothers is both powerful and mythic, and brings this cycle of Wraeththu history to a marvelous conclusion.

A wonderful ending.......2007-05-07
This book is one of the reasons why I love Storm Constantine's work. She manages to take everything she built up in the first two books of the trilogy, and bring it all together. There's no stretching the text or trying desperately to fill pages; the pacing is wonderful, and it's a page turner right to the end.
And it gets complex! All the hints from the first book, as well as some from the original Wraeththu trilogy, are brought together here in a plot that's more bizarre and fascinating than I'd imagined. Ancient angelic lore, occultism and interplanar travel are featured as Wraeththu work through a truly monumental period of growth in their history. The story is full of suspense, with an incredibly satisfying ending.
As is Constantine's style, we get to see some really interesting sides of various characters; I was particularly surprised to see what happened to Ponclast in this book. She has a good sense of balance for switching from one set of characters to the next, not letting us go too long without checking on everyone.
This book really brought the trilogy together, and it's going to be a favorite read of mine for years to come.
Tying up the loose ends.......2006-07-22
This is not just a finale for this trilogy, it's a satisfying conclusion to the entire Wraeththu arc. Characters you haven't even though of since the first book show up, and there are new revelations about other longtime characters that will surprise you.
Pell is still his ornery self, and he gets much more "screen time" than he's had in a while in the series.
Everything left hanging since the beginning of the series is answered here: Do you want to finally know where Wraeththu and Kamagrian come from? It's here. Do you want to know what happens when a harling is conceived by three, rather than two, hara? It's here. What of Lileem and her library? Yup, that's here too.
If the above confuses you, it's meant to. If you don't understand that, you really shouldn't read this book yet. Some books in some trilogies or series can be read as a standalone novel. While I suppose you might get some enjoyment if you tried it with this one, you'd also be immune to many of the surprises here... if you don't remember Velaxis, for instance, you're going to miss something big. Go get the Tor Omnibus book of the first trilogy (
Wraeththu) and start there.
For the rest of you, though, those who want to know what Theide's been up to and whatever became of Ponclast, this conclusion does not disappoint.
Fantastic finale.......2006-06-22
Darquiel was raised amidst the Olopade tribe, but though he has no idea who his parents are he believes he is the offspring of humiliated, dead or both Wraeththu of renown. As he grows up he realizes he is different from his tribesmen as he has magical prowess that no other seems to have. He experiments trying to "incept" his best friend, the human Amelza, but that fails tragically; Thiede the powerful detects Darq's magical effort especially his psychic plea to help his friend and realizes how different this har is from his tribesmen.
Loki, the son of the mighty Tigron, has a well earned reputation in the use of magic and diplomacy. However, Geburael and his half-brother Diablo, believing that the hold on society by their grandfather Tigron must end must kidnap Loki, whose attempts to escape fail. As Darq learns how to control his magic and who his parents are, his path will intersect with Geburael, Diablo, and Loki.
Though action saga fantasy fans will want to pass as the story line moves at a moderate pace, readers who appreciate a deep look at a future evolved species of humanity will fully relish this Wraeththu entry. Darq is the fascinating character though he shares top billing with the more accomplished Loki as the former's coming of age in the realm of magic brings deep insight into the abilities of his race. Storm Constantine provides a fine tale that shines a powerful light on the Wraeththu.

Magnificent finale.......2006-06-19
Seldom you see a fantasy trilogy conclding itself in a manner so rich and satisfying. All the threads come to end in a stunning yet convincing way, and the plot unfurls in an intriguing, fascinating way. Seven years after the war on Fulminir, we witness the predicaments of three second-generation hara conceived during the fateful eventsin Shades: the proud and troubled Darquiel, growing in the far nothern realm of Olopade, the pampered and naive Loki, the favoured son of the Tigrons Calanthe and Pellaz, and the devious Geburael, son of the enemy of the Tigrons, Ponclast, andof the traitorous son of Pellaz, Abrimel. Geburael lives in the dark dimension of Thanatep with his brother Diablo, that teached him only hate and desires of revenge. The lives of Geburael, Loki and Darquiel will come at a crucial point in the magic land of Anakhai. Meanwhuile, the Kamagrian Lileem, in the realm of the Multiversal Library (in which one hears the echo of the Infinite Library of Jorge Luis Borges), will discover the very secret of the birth and meaning of Wraeththu. And even the all-powerful Thiede will have a part in this final disclosure.
Magnificently narrated, rich in details of strange and arcane realms, with charachters described in a so vivid and superbly detailed manner, that the reader will never forget them, this novel is a worthy conclusion of a trilogy that I think is no less magical and beautiful than the first Wraeththu Trilogy.
Book Description
When two of the Conglomerated Mining and Manufacturing Company employees are killed on the space station Jupiter - a "gold mine," as wealthy as the great Biblical mines of Ophir - in what appears to be an industrial accident, Private detective Mike Flynn is hired to investigate. Discovering that key witnesses were transferred off the Station and the doctor who performed the autopsies has died from the effects of polymethyl two four dibenzolacetate (the most abused designer drug of the twenty-first century), Flynn leaps to the conclusion that Jupiter Station is earning its huge profits not from legitimate mining, but from the secret production of polymeth. With the enlisted help of company attorney Wendy Chadwick, Flynn's investigation takes him deeper and deeper into the tangled webs ensnaring the Conglomerated space station. There he uncovers the true secret of the company - one that could have massive consequences for everyone on the station as well as Earth itself. But first, he has to stay alive long enough to pass on what he knows, and there are those at the station who will stop at nothing to ensure his silence, and murder is just the beginning . . .
David Michael Drury grew up in Casco, Wisconsin. Since 1987 Dr. Drury has been a member of the faculty of the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, where he is a professor of electrical engineering. He lives with Midnight Sky and TC, his little pet cats.
Customer Reviews:
It's more of a mystery than science fiction.......2006-01-03
"All the Gold of Ophir" is a quite uncommon sort of a book. It appears to be a science-fiction book; after all, there is a picture of a space station on the cover. And indeed, this book's story does take place on a space station. But this book is not a science-fiction story as that would be normally understood. There are no space aliens and no exploding space ships. This book is a mystery thriller that happens to be set in space. If one wanted to imagine this book as an episode of an old-time TV show, its plot would not have fit on "Star Trek," but would have fit well on "Rockford Files" or "Mannix," except that it is set in space. However, it is a good story, and a reader who likes mysteries should like this one. A reader who likes mysteries and science-fiction should like it a lot.
As a mystery, the book works very well. The plot concerns several mysterious deaths, some apparent dealing in illegal drugs, and a crusty private eye with a heart of gold that has to discover what is going on. The solution to the mystery is not obvious. Flynn, the protagonist, has many wrong hunches and follows several false leads, so the story is engagingly complex. At the same time, the solution is not ridiculously convoluted or absurd, so the reader can follow the solving of the mystery well.
There are one or two qualities in the author's style that may put off some readers, though they did not bother me. David Drury, the author, is an engineering professor, so some quite "hard" science appears in the book from time to time. For example, the reader is informed that the water falling in a decorative waterfall on the rotating space station falls in a curve due to Coriolis force, and the outside walls of the station are heated by eddy currents in the steel caused by the station rotating in Jupiter's intense magnetic field. The book is certainly not full of scientific and engineering jargon, and the scientific references do not in any way obscure the plot or the characters. But a reader who is put off by actual science (as opposed to science-fiction) might find the references a bit mystifying.
Also, the characters generally tend toward sarcasm and caustic insults. Some of the comments are quite entertaining, but people who do not like that sort of put-down might be offended by how commonly such comments appear.
Over-all, this is a well-written book. I suppose you will find it on your bookstore's science-fiction shelf; just be aware that it fits better on the mystery shelf, and you should enjoy it.
Not as good as I expected.......2005-12-16
I got this book because it was written by a professor of mine at the UWP. He is an amazing professor, but she keep his talents directed in that way. This book did not have what it takes to get and keep my interest, and i am an avid SCIFI fan, let alone someone who has only a minor interest in that aspect of the book. I did not feel like i could connect with the characters, and did not think that any of them were particularly well developed. This book feels like those that you know are written in a rush, but i know for a fact that he spent nearly 15 years writing it. I think he is a wonderful man, but he sould have kepet this one burried in the computer files where it belongs.
fantastic and exciting thriller set in space.......2005-12-07
The Asterbrooks travel to Jupiter Station to retrieve the body of their son Phillip who died in an industrial accident. The Conglomerated Mining and Manufacturing Company's representative informs them that the body was jettisoned into space because they had no instructions from the Asterbrooks. The Asterbooks discover proof that the company knew they were coming and obtain their son's belongings, but discover Phillip's journals are missing and believe a cover up of some kind is going on.
They hire independent private detective Mike Flynn to discover what the company is covering up and how it pertains to their son's death. Flynn discovers that all the people connected to the case have been transferred to better positions in different parts of the galaxy. He persuades Wendy Chadwick, the head of the legal department, to let him enter a restricted area; she agrees on the condition she accompanies him. While there, company security forces try to kill them. Although they escape the director of security Silvanus Drake is watching Flynn and putting roadblocks in his path, which convinces the sleuth that the company is hiding something. He intends to find out what it is or die trying.
ALL THE GOLD OF OPHIR is a fantastic and exciting thriller set in space in the not so distant future. The protagonist is a hard boiled detective who can't be bought or bribed and always stays on the right side of the law. He has a theory about what the company is trying to hide but he leaves himself open to other ideas as they present themselves and conducts the investigation as if his idea might not pan out. David M. Drury's potboiler will appeal to readers who like exciting creative mysteries in outer space.

Every recipe is fantastic!.......2007-05-20
This has been a cookbook I find myself reaching for 99% of the time. Every single meal I've made in it has been absolutely wonderful. People are always raving about the meals, and asking for the recipes. The ingredients are easy to find, and are usually on-hand anyway. And, thankfully, the results are anything but bland potluck fare! Outstanding book.

Very thorough and infomative.......2006-07-07
I needed a thorough reference to complete an appraisal on 2 19th century Perry & Co. chandeliers. The pictures were gorgeous. The history is very thorough and the chapters on Types of Lighting and Restoration were very helpful. I think I know why chandelier designers and restoration specialists call this the "Bible".
