Our hero, glamorous art photographer Andre Kelly, is on assignment for glamorous DQ Magazine--run by the glamorous Camilla Porter--in Cape Ferrat on the (you guessed it) glamorous Côte d'Azur. Snooping around an ancestral pile for some snaps, by chance he spies Old Claude, the ancient retainer of the immensely wealthy Denoyer family, packing the family Cezanne into a plumbing van. Puzzled, Andre investigates, and the game is afoot. Peter Mayle's latest effort, Chasing Cezanne, is a whodunit that shows good manners and impeccable taste. It takes its characters--graduates of all the best schools, of course--to some of the world's most posh locales. The plot device is high rent, too: a purloined painting worth a cool $30 million. To call this book lightweight seems unfair and boorish besides. There's lots of travel, lots of opulence, lots of opportunities for Mayle to describe Paris and Provence, and all the yummies you'll find in both places. Who can worry about a mystery when the food's so delectable?
Book Description
Hanky-panky on the international art scene is the source of the hilarity and fizz in Peter Mayle's new novel. He flies us back to the south of France (a region some readers of his irresistible best-sellers believe him to have invented), on a wild chase through galleries, homes of prominent collectors, and wickedly delectable restaurants. There are stopovers in the Bahamas and England, and in New York, where that glossiest of magazines, Decorating Quarterly, reflects the cutting-edge trendiness of its editor, Camilla Jameson Porter. (Camilla has recently broken new ground in the world of power lunches by booking two tables on the same day, and shuttling between them, at the city's trendiest restaurant.)
It is Camilla who has sent our hero, Andre Kelly, to Cap Ferrat to take glamorous photo-graphs of the houses and treasures of the rich, famous, and fatuous. He happens to have his camera at the ready when he spots a Cézanne being loaded onto a plumber's truck near the home of an absent collector. Odd, thinks Andre. And in no time he's on the trail of a state-of-the-art art scam, chasing Cézanne.
It's a joy to follow him and the crowds intent on speeding or foiling his quest--including a beautiful agent; a super-savvy art dealer attracted to the finer things in life, especially if they promise the payoff of a lifetime; an awesome Dutch forger; some outstandingly greedy New York sophisticates; and, invisible in the background, the parade of remarkable chefs whose mouthwatering culinary masterpieces periodically soothe the hero and tantalize the reader of Chasing Cézanne.
Customer Reviews:
Lightweight Divertissement.......2006-04-28
This rather light book is a decent beach read or a companion on a plane flight, but little more. The plot centers on a stolen work of art, and in typical Mayle style includes a romp through France, with many stops at fine restaurants and brasseries. Mayle has a wonderful way of describing the French joie de vivre, with heavy emphasis on their culinary prowess, and this work is no exception. Unfortunately, there is little more to this novel. The plot is not all that plausible, the characters uninteresting, the story not well fleshed out, and the ending is simply stupid. Peter Mayle has written some wonderful novels, but this isn't one of them. I can't even recommend this to someone who liked his other works, it is really without interest or merit. Overall, a disappointing effort, and worthy only to pass the time on vacation or while travelling.
Continue to soak up the good life..........2006-04-21
Although this novelette by Peter Mayle does not have as much of the "good life" of Provence we soak up from his other books, it's still as fun and capricious as his other novels and worth the short bit of time it takes to read it! Recommended for anyone who has enjoyed Mayle's other novels, arm-chair travelers, and people looking for a beach read!
Humorous, intriguing and delicious.......2006-03-24
I've been "hooked" on Peter Mayle since I read Hotel Pastis, and Chasing Cezanne is another rare treat. I can't resist the combination of French scenery, French food, a little intrigue, and lighthearted fun that Mayle combines in his works of fiction. And of course, for those who prefer nonfiction, all of his Provence books (A year in...; Toujours ...; Encore...etc.) are also delightful.
Interesting, but essentially blaisé..........2005-05-31
"Chasing Cezanne" was a little disappointing...I'm not a big reader of fiction outside the sci-fi/fantasy genre, but this book was recommended by a French teacher (herself from Belgium, actually) since I'll be studying in Provence for 9 weeks in the fall. I was expecting more of a "travelogue" (the title and the teacher's description sort of implied a narrative of the author's research on writing a biography of Cezanne.) Needless to say, I was a little skeptical as soon as I discovered it was a novel, but I gave it a try anyway.
Expectations aside, the novel is still rather flat. The protaganists spend most of the story flying from one spot to another, with editorial observations injected by Mayle frequently and randomly. They toss money around like water yet constantly seem desperate for more. The characters, especially the bad guys, are remarkably cliché. The problems faced by the main characters never really seemed to catch my interest, and even a couple times when their lives where in danger, the descriptions of their situation didn't even raise a mild anxiety in me.
I just finished a survey course of Western art from the 15th to 20th centuries, so all the art references piqued my interest, but they still felt like a sophomoric attempt to make an "in-joke" with part of his audience and leave the rest scratching their heads. It was an easy read, though, and still managed to (mostly) hold my attention throughout (I finished it in one sitting.)
Overall, a pleasant but forgettable experience that, in the hands of a competent screenwriter and director, might make a good film. I think I'll try Mayle's "A Year in Provence" which, from what I've read, seems closer to what I was looking for.
As effervescent as French champagne.......2005-05-11
So I pick some no-brainers off the library shelf -- Deaver, Woods, Mayle, and a couple of lesser-knowns -- and "Chasing Cezanne" is so much fun, not to mention goreless and unperverted, that I can't bring myself to read the others. As much as I enjoy murder mysteries with psychological complexities, "Cezanne" has definitely put me off my feed. Like Rosemunde Pilcher's novels, it's a vacation to heaven. The plot of "Cezanne" is not overburdened but merely le moutard sur la viand of glamourous settings and eccentric characters who love themselves and life, sweet romance without graphic sex, and food, food, food. This novel is a salad course, a sorbet that clears a mental palette of sordid modern life. Its pace is much livelier than that of the Provence books -- which is appropriate, after all. I'm going back for seconds.

Confused and does not end well.......2002-10-25
Okay, time to give this book a review people can use. First, if you have not read at least the 4th and 5th books of this series, read them first. If you do not, this book is extremely confusing and hard to follow. It refers to several things that happen in the first five books, and they are integrel to the story. Also, I do not agree with the ending, it is confusing and hard to believe. Otherwise, it is an average and well-written book. A somewhat dissappointing conclusion to a series that should have ended after three books.
Yet ANOTHER Superb Book by Anthony.......2000-04-20
Thank you so much Piers Anthony for this wonderful addition to my favorite series you have written so far in my oppinion. You added so much to the characters and made me fall in love with the protagonists all over again.
A good book in a good series........2000-01-08
A good book in a good series
a good book because.............1999-04-09
I liked Unicorn Point. It continued the story in a believable way, as well as adding to the storylines and suggesting other ways for the story to go.
Great book!.......1999-02-18
A well written and fitting conclusion to "Out of Phaze" and "Robot Adept".

Book Description
Immortal, unchanging, the eternal survivor, Nathan Brazil had tired of his long duty as the guardian of the Well World and had enlisted Mavra Chang, space pilot and adventurer, as his companion and equal, sharing with her the godlike power to control the universe's destiny. Now the Well World is changing, and Brazil and Chang have drifted apart . . . but they must work together one more time to stop a new threat to the Well World -- the greatest threat of all . . . .
Customer Reviews:
This New Watchers at the Well Trilogy Doesn't Quite Live Up to the Original Series.......2007-02-03
Jack L. Chalker's return to the Well World universe was much anticipated, and in the end pretty good. This new trilogy, Watchers at the Well, starts with "Echoes of the Well of Souls", continues with "Shadow of the Well of Souls", and concludes with "Gods of the Well of Souls".
Long locked away in an ancient prison, a completely alien force found a chink in its prison cell the last time Nathan Brazil, the immortal keeper of the Well World where control of the universe lies, reset the universe. Now it wants out so it can have free reign of the universe and control of the Well World itself.
Alerted to the danger at hand, the Well World summons Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang, his new co-Keeper of the Well, but will they answer the call? Brazil is weary, very weary; keeping watch over the universe for all eternity has taken its toll on him and his is just too tired to deal with it anymore. And Chang, who is now estranged from Brazil, never wanted the responsibility that forced upon her.
As the threat to the safety of the universe and the Well World grows and Brazil and Chang ignore the call, the alien entity grows stronger; and, the computer at the heart of the Well World must stop at nothing to get the undivided attention of its keepers before it is too late!
If you loved the original Well World series (and who wouldn't?!?), you will most likely want to read this series as well; if you haven't, then stop and read it immediately.
Readable but not much more.......2002-02-01
These three books are OK. The first sequence (midnight to twilight :) ) are the best and I'm not even going to bother with the other 'Well World' books after these.
My major problem with these is the author seems to have forgotten (or arbitrarily changed) things that happened in Echoes. In Echoes he has two of the entries (by inference Tony and the Colonel) going to specific hexes, but in the Shadow, suddenly Tony is a Dillian (when it was definitely stated only the girl went there in E) and the Colonel is a Leeming.
Also why have the inhabitants of Hakazit changed from the first series? They WERE giant armoured red-eyed lizards and now they are man sized mosquito's. Did Chalker re-read his old stuff?
That's the major problem. There's no consistency. And I've only pointed out a couple of the stuff up's.
A Shadow of the original series.......2001-03-30
This is a pretty good yarn, and Chalker's gift of invention is displayed very well here - unlike in the first book of this series, which took place on Earth for the most part. Here we are back on the beloved Well World, and as usual, much of the enjoyment lies in discovering new alien races. Chalker's plot is not nearly as intense as the original Well series, though - the whole race to the Well seems forced and lacks urgency. Altogether an enjoyable read, but hardly a classic. Not even a pulpy, guilty-pleasure classic like the original series, which I highly recommend.
Please avoid; but don't miss the first series.......2000-05-01
Jack Chalker's original Well of Souls series (Midnight, Echoes, Quest, Return, Twilight) are classics, possibly the finest science fiction series I have ever read. The three books in this series are horrid, and I don't just mean in relation to the originals. Like many other writers, his energy was spent after the first few series and books, and he has degenerated into rehashing formaulaic bad prose over and over. Where he used to "show" what was happening, he now spends endless pages "tell"ing in justification of the poor choices his characters make in far fetched plot. The outcome was thoroghly predictable. The plot was the most forced plot I can ever remember reading. The lectures at the end were insufferable. Please avoid. And please read the originals - not to be missed!

Better than the "idiots guides".......2006-07-23
This is a nice pithy book filled with a surprizing amount of information for it's small size. It's easy to read and its chapters are short and to the point.
This book does describe the various branches of Judaism (Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist), however, it's point of view tends strongly towards the Conservative/Orthodox. It also tends to view the bible fairly literally, and without an apparent appreciation of the bible's historical context. For example, this book might lead one to assume that the religion of ancient Israel is the essentially the same as modern Judaism. Very few scholars would agree with this assumption.
This book also claims Judaism is categorically opposed to interfaith marriages and says nothing about converts or conversions. This is too bad, considering that about half of the Jews marry non-Jews with many bringing up their families Jewish, and that within liberal Judaism there is a large and growing number of converts coming to Judaism.
On the whole, the book contains a good deal of information, but one comes away from the book without an appreciation of the deep complexity and beauty of Judaism. It seems to present Judaism as a static collection of holidays, traditions, laws and customs. This is really too bad, because Judaism is so much more.

Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2002-11-04
It seems ridiculous to try to describe a cookbook as "peaceful" but this cookbook really is. Just reading it almost always fills me with the feeling I get when I am working on a familiar, much-loved recipe for people I care about on a special occasion, which unfortunately is rare. I think that is the magic of this author and this book; the author really seems to approach every meal as a celebration--but a celebration of simple things, as the title says.
This book is mostly vegetarian except for a short but notable chapter on fish. It seems to draw effortlessly from a variety of ethnic sources but all the dishes share the same basic qualities. They really are simple and easy to prepare; there isn't a single one I would describe as fussy. I suppose when you are cooking for an entire monastery you wind up with recipes that also are easy to prepare for 4 or 6!
The directions are simple and clear and the book itself is beautiful. There are interesting illustrations, seemingly woodcarvings not of the food but of mideaval life. There are also quotes on the subject of simplicty, joy, prayer in the margins which are as inspirational as the recipes.
This book will make you hungry for a hundred different kinds of vegetables, a peaceful weekend in the kitchen and a lot else. I recommend it to anyone who takes real joy in cooking.
With a unique and tranquil culinary spirit.......2001-06-08
The delightful recipes comprising Brother Victor-Antoine's Simplicity From A Monastery Kitchen brings a unique and tranquil culinary spirit to today's hectic life style. From Eggs in Potato Croustades, Gnocchi with Arugula and Watercress, and Deauville Shrimp Bisque, to Jerusalem Artichoke Salad, St. Anthony's Bread, and Natas (a Portuguese dessert from an old nunnery), Simplicity From A Monastery Kitchen recipes combine natural ingredients for satisfying, nourishing, elegantly flavored cuisine that would grace any table.

The Theatermania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings

Customer Reviews:
The best book I have read on musical theatre recordings.......2001-11-07
I bought this book several years ago, upon its original publication. Although it is, of course, rather out-of-date because it omits the current (1990-2000) crop of musical theatre offerings, it is still a stunning achievement.
Ganzl is a brilliant, literate writer, and he has the ability to write about such technical matters as voice ranges without ever getting so obscure that an ordinary reader can't understand what he means. (Perhaps this has prevented his book from being more successful, but it certainly shouldn't have.)And though I do not share all of his opinions, he writes compellingly enough that he remains interesting. His writing is completely free of smugness, superiority, or the vaguely smart-alecky tone that such better known theatre authors as Ethan Mordden occasionally adopt.
Ganzl also has what amounts to a mind-boggling access to foreign language recordings of musical theatre works (this book was written before the Internet became as easily accessible), as well as a familiarity with obscure, foreign language operettas whose recorded versions are almost never found in America, and he devotes entire chapters to them. My one regret is that he does not undertake a critical analysis of the several recordings of "Porgy and Bess", simply because "Porgy" is an opera. At each chapter's end, he gives a list of personal recommendations of recorded musicals.
This is one book that deserves several reprintings and updatings. It does not feel like a reference book, just a highly entertaining one. It should have already become a classic.
excellent--but it needs to be updated.......1996-11-23
great for record or CD collectors, but only up to 1988.
Needs a serious update. How about it?

A great aid for teaching children.......2000-09-01
This book helps you teach your children about woodworking. Inside are some 30 projects. There are no plans in this book, but instead the book teaches the actual techniques needed in real woodworking. As such, the book suggests a project, describes how to make the item, and then shows some of the various items created by actual children. All of these projects rely on hand-powered tools that are safe for children to work with.
This is a great book! At first I checked it out from the library, but it is so good that I just had to have a copy for myself. I was glad to see that the many photos in this book show both boys and girls doing the projects, as I have both a son and a daughter.
I recommend this book absolutely!

Fritz Bultman..."Collages by Fritz Bultman".......2007-03-10
Being a professional artist for almost 30 years, from time to time ,
I myself, will go through a collage stage and this book hit a homerun for me.
I am a colorist and when I find a book with color...as with this book,
it is a true plus. The book also allows readers into the private life of
the artist. He loved poetry, which shows up in the collages. There are
29 full color plates showing us his journey to perfection. He also
loved artists and you can see that influence in his collages, which have
more clarity than his paintings.I would recommend this book to anyone
working with clarity of color. 4 star.
