Ovid redivivus.......2004-04-21

I had to comment, because the reviews currently listed here rather missed the point of this collection. I don't just mean the Ovid allusions (which are more often irrelevant than crucial to understanding the stories). Shakar takes each myth and explores the psychological and emotional elements, emerging with something ancient and something new. "Maximum Carnage" is perhaps the subtlest of them. It begins with the tale of Caenis/Caeneus from Ovid's Metamorphoses, and focuses on the rape element. Roxanne's own violation is presented subtly and in chillingly sinister allusion. Her fixation on penetration and bloodshed is depicted in what seems a nauseatingly realistic way. In the end he seems to attribute trauma not to the media violence children encounter (video games, etc), but to the violence children experience at the hands of adults and each other. On the other hand, it is interesting that Roxanne chooses to express her trauma in the language of video games and comic books...

The last story uses an experimental narrative technique that works well with the subject matter. It offers an oddly hopeful and optimistic outlook, but only to those who will listen to the voice in their ears. The "end" is a bit confusing, and made me wonder whether the second-to-last number on the last page might be a misprint.

Yes, read these stories. They are less about a city than about civilization (which hasn't changed much since Ovid's day).

Very Disappointing.......2007-05-09

"Heirs of Prophecy" is the fifth installment in the, so far, excellent "Sembia" series of stand-alone novels. I liked Smedman's earlier works (or rather later works since those books I read were written after this one), and I came into reading this novel with rather high expectations. It was not to be, though.

First something about the good things in this novel. Smedman's imagination is very colorful, and she gives some very good and vivid descriptions of Cormanthor forest and the wild elves living in it. Besides that, one of the characters, Leifander, is very interesting and well fleshed-out, which can't be said about this novel's other characters. The book also contains very few combat scenes, something I find very refreshing.

Now the bad stuff. As I mentioned, most of the characters are very shallow and uninteresting, and especially the book's main character Larajin. There is a concept about her being a priest of two goddesses at once, and while it may seem interesting, it turns out rather boring and repetitive. The author wanted to give a feeling of progress to her powers, I guess, but it turned out to be ridiculously fast. The plot is the standard "D&D adventure" plot, as I like to call it. Go there, learn that, go somewhere else, meet someone, do something, go somewhere again. There is a prophecy, a lost family member, a looming war, everything that has been written a million times over. To be honest, last forty or so pages show that there was maybe something to be done with the plot, but too little and far too late. The book also has a couple of annoying inconsistencies, such as elves despoiling their own burial grounds.

All in all, I expected far more from this novel. Read at your own discretion.

This is a fairly good read, the plot is average, but the story telling, vivid descriptions, and good character development help make this story.

This is a story about good/noble/wonderful elves, and bad/greedy/bigoted/cheating/lying humans (sigh). The Heroine must stop a war, stop a evil wizard, save her brothers, and all with the power of LOVE!!! [yuck]. But the story is told with wonderful descriptive prose, reasonable complex characterizations, and seems to make up for the insipid plot. The flying cat is enough reason too read this book!

Although giving the elves facial tattoos seriously put me off, and nearly had me toss out the book. If you can get past this `sacralige', and you like this sort of story, you will probably like "Heirs of Prophecy".

Starts strong, but..........2002-06-22

Larajin, the bastard half-elf daughter of Thamalon Uskevren, is a likeable and appealing character, and at first it's pleasing to follow her adventures. But when four powers clash with no visible fallout, an avariel elf, the first ever to appear in a Forgotten Realms novel, a truly once in a lifetime occurence, is tossed in as a subplot, the imperious Lord Maalthiir is reduced to a sub-moron and the entire war plot is resolved through a set of contrivances and mixmatched loves that wouldn't seem out of place in a Restoration Comedy like The Way of the World... well let's just say that something's missing.

If you enjoyed The Grapes of Wrath, you will enjoy this companion.

Even though the author is a professor from a university in Kansas, and even though he has filled this book with facts, it's easily readable in a sort of journalistic style.

The Grapes of Wratch is discussed in themed chapters that need not be read sequentially. They include: the novel as literature, reaction to the novel in California, in Oklahoma, war-torn Europe, and throughout the USA; the author's dedication to the plight of the Okies that preceded and followed The Grapes of Wrath, local, state & federal government reaction, the movie, Hollywood's reaction to the movie, natural history of Dust Bowl from perspective of geologic time (did you know, the Dust Bowl was NOT caused by overfarming: there's a geologic record that the Dust Bowl phenomenon is a regular occurance. Conservation-minded farming methods can lessen its impact, but cannot prevent a Dust Bowl).

A caution: if you haven't already read The Grapes of Wrath, this book may be difficult to follow.

I am doing researh on John Steinbeck with a special focus on the thirties novels. This book offers some interesting interpretations and criticism. Presented as a series of articles, the insights in this book are easily accesible. The book is geared toward high schoolers, but the analysis is fairly sophisticated.

This book is useful also because two points of view are offered--both praise and criticism are present here, and the book offers a balance of thought for the reader. Of particular interest were Slade's essay Biblical Imagery in TGOW, Gladstein's Steinbeck Speaks for all Immigrants, and Terkel's TGOW: Fifty Years Later. This book also briefly treats the subject of censorship in America. Recommended, along with Warren French's excellent A Companion to TGOW.

I found this book quickly became my favorite, looking through and finding an extensive section on the heirloom pattern. It is hard to find info on this pattern this complete with lovely pictures and numbers. This is invaluable to Fostoria collectors.

The section on Heirloom alone is worth the price of the book. Every piece is listed in every color, with prices, and dates! The photographs are in vivid color, with every piece identified. These gals have got it together. Milk Glass is a revelation as well. Lots of goodies in this book. Lots of color and more information than I've ever seen about this period. A must for Fostoria collectors!

Gets better with each reading..........2005-01-06

As a relatively new mosaicist, I own several hardcover books by the well-known international artists. This is becoming my favorite. I often go to it to revisit a certain technique, or mosaic for inspiration or review, just to find myself rereading whole sections. When you are working on a new project, the perspective with which you read changes to accomodate the current work. The data on the page is the same, but you synthesize it in a new way. Because there is so much depth to the design aspects in this book, its like reading a new book each time. If I had to pick just one of my current books, this would be it.

Very impressive.......2002-08-22

I have acquired quite a few mosaic books and written reviews for them on Amazon, and although all of them are useful to some extent, this mosaic book has really impressed me! There are many photos of absolutely gorgeous mosaic designs which follow a more traditional style, using only tiles and not other objects such as rocks, shells, marbles, etc., like you find in some mosaic books. The designs are exquisite in color and workmanship as well. There are many "gallery" items which are examples of professional work, and there are quite a few featured projects with a form of instructions called "Method Tips" which, rather than giving explicit step-by-step instructions, give instructions with advice, suggestions and options for color, materials, positioning, etc. Because of this, and because the designs are rather sophisticated and complex, this is not a mosaic book for beginners. However, truly motivated beginners could get started trying out a couple of the simpler projects.

Besides the gorgeous designs, this book is impressive in its extensive teaching about design, light, color, contrast, background, and several methods of laying mosaic. I get the feeling I'm in the hands of a skillful and professional mosaicist, and that this is a book to be studied to gain useful insight for building my own skills. These are not designs for someone to quickly throw together; rather this book is an excellent resource for serious mosaicists.

Wow - this is an amazing book that explores colour, tone, texture and technique in sufficient detail with great photos to match. Excellent for inspiration and learning the finer points of the mosaic art but not really suited for beginners. It only loses a star because the format is not the easiest to follow even though it is well laid out, and at first glance, it doesn't appear to be a workbook. But mosaic afficienados should really include this book on their "must-have" list, if not for the photos alone. Definitely recommended.
