Book Description
Georg Buchner died in 1837 at a tragically early age, and his three works for the stage remained virtually unknown for half a century. Today all three, especially Danton's Death, his great play about the French Revolution are performed regularly.
Book Description
Buchner was acknowledged by figures as divergent as Antonin ARtaud and Bertolt Brecht to be the forefather of modern theatre.

The "object" Woyzeck.......2001-09-29
While evolving around the potential for psychopathic violence and paranoia, Büchner's psycho-medical text not only guarantees human anxiety and hopelessness, but the phenomenological abolition of ontological hierachies. The fragmental composition mirrors a world of poverty, submission and alienation, where the "object" Woyzeck faces a materialistic fatality.
Book Description
Stubborn, single-minded and steadfast . . .
Striving to save the Aurelian Empire, Valeria reached for too much power too quickly and a darkness has rooted inside her. Unable to confess the truth, Valeria turns to Kerrec, her former mentor, one of the elite Riders from the Mountain, home of the gods. But Kerrec, too, is deeply wounded and his darkness may be even deeper than hers -- and he is refusing to face it. Until his weakness nearly destroys the Riders and their immortal white stallions . . .
As Kerrec is sent from the Mountain on a desperate quest for healing, Valeria is forbidden to follow. But compelled by a power she cannot understand and encouraged by her own stallion, she shadows Kerrec on a perilous mission.
The patterns of deception and secrets have been woven, the threats of war and unrest spread throughout the land, the barbarian hordes return and once more it is Valeria -- and Kerrec -- who must gather their strength and their wounded magic to protect all that they believe in . . .
But who will believe in them?

Great book!!.......2007-07-28
I really loved this book. I thought that the story really moved along great and it is an excellent sequel to Brennan's first book. I love horses and that is another reason that I really like this trilogy.
satisfying middle book of a fantasy/romance trilogy.......2007-06-29
Valeria is now accepted by the Riding School, where gods of patterns and time take the shape of white stallions and help determine the future of the Empire. But she and her teacher, First Rider Kerrec, both carry damage from their encounters with enemies of the Empire. Those same enemies, barbarians who follow the Unmaking (which would lead to the destruction of the world), threaten the Empire again. Can two damaged Riders, and the stallion gods who carry them, help the Empire win a deadly war?
While this is the middle book of a trilogy, I preferred it to both the beginning and concluding books. I tend to be a reader of fantasy rather than romance, and I actually think that the romantic triangles/quadrangles in the other two books detracted from the plots of those books. They really felt sort of forced to me.
Wonderful horse-lover's escape!.......2007-06-14
I really enjoyed this second offering. The character development continues to intrigue. Ms. Brennan's ability to paint those characters are neither wholly good nor wholly bad makes them interesting and more true-to-life. (Except Gothard -- pure evil, that one.) And the horses...sigh. Such wonderful descriptions of them and their roles as gods-on-earth. Any horse-crazy woman who has studied the art of dressage for the pure love of riding, will be mesmerized by this story. And for those who aren't into the fat white horses (lol!), the book's message that relationships are at the heart of every triumph and conflict will keep you reading.
A Solid Middle Pillar of theTrilogy.......2006-12-21
This book follows the first one in the series, The Mountain's Call, picking up with Euan vying for the position of High King and Kerrac's magic forcing him from the mountain. What follows is a winding road of self-discovery, sacrifice, and above all, an eloquent treatise on the nature of love.
My only true problem with the book came as a romance reader and writer. Because of Valeria and Kerrac's physical affection for each other, not once during the first book, nor the second, was the subject of birth control discussed. Now, I understand this is a fantasy, but Valeria is a farmer's daughter, which means she knows exactly what happens, and if that isn't enough, her mother is a midwife. Yet, it isn't until a pregnancy is necessary to the plot, then we hear about "wards" that may have failed or it may have been the gods' toying with the characters. Or it could simply be that their actions caught up with them. Either way, this part of the plot seems contrived, because what did you expect when two people express their physical love without protection?
Other than that, the plot unfolded with page-turning speed, and the reader guessed, but never quite knew exactly where the story would take her. That meant the emotional tale packed a punch, and surprise was exhibited in precisely the right moments. A good setup for the third book, and a wonderful middle pillar of the trilogy.
Disappointing sequel.......2006-07-02
This book has taken me a LOOOOOOOONG time to get through. I keep getting distracted by other books. I didn't have the same problem with "The Mountain's Call" which further solidifies my belief that this book falls far short of its predecessor. The bar set by "The Mountain's Call" has not been reached by its sequel, which is unfortunate.
There are just too many predictable things going on. Valeria is of course the focus, and her magic is never really in question, but of course she makes some stupid decisions that drive the mediocre plot. Of course she's disregarded by the other Riders. Of course Kerrec completely breaks down. Of course she meets up with Euan. Kerrec is becoming irritatingly predictable. The horse-gods are playing havoc with Valeria without bothering to even try to convince the other acolytes (er, the Riders) of their will, and through it all, that little spell that was never really explained, the Unmaking, threatens from the sidelines.
There's something about the stubbornness of the Riders that really gets on my nerves, because they seem so rigid and undefined. They have basically no personality. It's hard to care for any of the characters anymore, when Valeria is so obviously much more powerful than anyone, yet no one likes her, Kerrec is falling apart at the seams, Gothard is so... stereotypical in his evilness (it's like the author is bashing me over the head with why I should despise him; he has NO redeeming qualities at all, and almost seems Evil For the Sake of Being Evil, except he's more of Evil For the Sake of Vengeance Because Everyone's A Meany-head.) and the Imperial Heir is curiously abandoning her royal post in the early goings. So where's the Emperor in all this, one wonders.
I don't know, the characters just really got on my nerves, and Gothard especially... just because he seems too cliche for my tastes. Euan is the only character who got much exploration, in my opinion, and he was already a fascinating one as it was. For as refreshing as this whole novel series started out (about halfway through the first book) it's rather become a disappointment to me. I hope the third book, "Shattered Dance," can revive my faith. As it stands now, this series is a little too cliched for my tastes.
Perhaps, though, my biggest complaint about this whole series is that the magic itself isn't very well defined. I keep finding myself saying "What does this magic do? What does the author mean when she says 'The Door of Time'? Why do the stallions need riders in The Dance, if the magic is within the stallions themselves? What kind of magic is this? Where does it originate from? Is it greater than Gothard's stone-magic? Why should the Empire give a damn about the Mountain and its magic? What are the rules of this magic, and why are the rules being broken so easily and at will? Why is Valeria so special that only she and no other can control all the stallions?" If the author can take some time to explore the purpose and rules of this magic, maybe it'll help, but I'm floundering, trying to figure out why I should care what happens to the Mountain. At this point, I'm with Gothard: Unmake the world, and start all over again.

Brother Termite.......2007-07-28
I like the book. I read it twice. Bought the book in 1993. I highly recommend the book. It combines the best of several genres.
I must be a masochist.......2007-03-26
Though I know by now that the endings of her books are gonna leave me dissatisfied, I still read them.
I read them because between the front cover and the ending there is always astonishingly good storytelling. This book was no exception. An alien invasion story told from the side of the aliens. It took me awhile to figure out that was what she was doing and then suddenly, just like that, it changed the entire way I was reading the book.
That angle made me think about what was happening more keenly than I was doing so up to that moment and actually made me go back and start again. Simply amazing writing. Again though, that ambiguous ending...
Still, I recommend it. You can still find her books here for pennies. At that price, don't be afraid to check her out. You may enjoy them tremendously.
Obvious but still insightful social/political commentary........2006-06-13
More of a political and cultural allegorical tale then a straight shooting Sci-fi novel. The book is not exactly about secretive plots and puppet regimes. It's in there, but it is more about the tale of an insider having a change of heart. A "yes alien" growing a conscious and challenging the caste systems and destiny of his race. Reverse Stockholm Syndrome....an Oskar Schindler kind of moment.
It is certainly above average and for the price WELL worth a look.
Wonderful effort from a great slipstream author. .......2006-01-08
In this surprising and polished work about politics and ethics, Patricia Anthony has written a book that deserves to be much more widely known and read than it appears to be. If you like smart fiction which plays with genre rules (rather than within them) then I suggest that you hurry and find a copy of Brother Termite.
Brother Termite is a story about Reen, an overworked alien bureaucrat in the White House who has to contend with seemingly every problem in the world-- hidden agendas from practially everybody, unreliable friends and lovers, and the annoying ghost of John F. Kennedy. The aliens and humans are caught in a mesh of competing personalities and ethical priorities-- a knotty problem which seems like it could lead to a failure of diplomacy...
Anthony has done a very clever thing and written a book which functions very well within both the Thriller and Science Fiction genres without ever actually losing its critical distance from either. It is a rare book that can be satisfying on stock levels (political whodunnit, alien anthropology) while still remaining a cool parody of the books that it is based on and the culture it comes from.
Do not read Anthony looking for your typical space opera. Her books are strongly character-based and ultimately more interested in human issues than xenobiology or battles. If you like the work of Mary Doria Russell, Bruce Sterling, or Philip K. Dick then you are probably on the right page for Anthony.
(I am sad to note, by the way, that her work seems to be out of print at the time of writing this review. I would stress that it is well worth the extra time and trouble to find copies while they are still available.)
A tour de force of writing.......2004-07-20
I read "God's Fire" and "Cold Allies" and enjoyed the author's quirky but brilliant style, especially the way aliens are so epehemeral, on the edge, non-human. In this book, a work that includes humor, mystery and science fiction, she ruminates on politics, culture, the future. The further one delves, the more one understands and admires the hero,(Reen-ja) and his travails.
The only word to describe character development (Ms. Anthony's forte) is awesome. The President journeys from pitiful rambling politician to tragic hero. Marian carefully plots the dangerous path that brings betrayal and heartbreak. Reen succumbs to that most human of emotions, love, though he cannot change his nature. A cosmic tragedy awaits the only two sentient races in the Galaxy - humans the termites. These humanoid aliens evolved from insects and as such are hive creatures with allegiance to their Brothers and Cousins. Their life is set at birth (an aside to much like the still-strong Indian caste system). Both termites and humans are losing the ability to reproduce. In the termites case, the vast majority are now born mindless workers.
The termites have undertaken to fuse two races into one that will stand the test of time. Experiments begin and children are born. We encounter murder, kidnapping, torture, investigations and surprises. The humor is always present - some of it slapstick but always with an edge. In fact the entire story has a shadowy nervousness as if one were waiting for the other shoe to drop. The commentary on rituals, customs, what it means to be human, are insightful and thought-provoking.
The incredible ending with Reen's final thoughts was not only tragic but triumphant, a classic case of martyrdom for our fellow man or in this case, fellow termite. The reader feels a deep sadness mixed with a sudden understanding as we grasp not only his shock but acceptance. The scene of his traitorous brother, attempting desperately to stop the sacrifice, remains with the reader long after the book was closed.

Nighttime radio talk show host Art Bell and bestselling author Brad Steiger address topics as varied as ghosts, ancient civilizations, and psychic powers in The Source, a tribute to unexplained phenomena. The authors are heavily biased toward UFOs, aliens, and abduction-related material, and other topics such as crop circles and human origins are slanted in this direction as well. The problem with The Source is that it takes on too much, only hinting at the vast realm of unexplained phenomena currently under scrutiny. A deeper exploration in a multi-volume collection would have proven more satisfying. However, The Source remains an easily digestible introduction to the world of high strangeness, and offers multiple starting points for the reader just striking out on an exploration of these fascinating subjects. --Brian Patterson
Book Description
What was once considered impossible in a rational world, has, through indisputable evidence, become all too possible. From the undeniable accuracy of end-of-the-world prophesies, to an increase in paranormal sightings, as well as proven interactions with the other side, the field known as the "unexplained" has captured the interest of believers and non-believers alike.
In this broad-ranging study, Art Bell and Brad Steiger-two of the most respected experts in the field-disclose their conclusions and theories about such subjects as:
* End-of-the-world prophesies and prophets * Near-death and out-of-body experiences * Conspiracies and government cover-ups * The Roswell crash and other UFO sightings * Crop circles and other unexplained phenomena * Demon possession and poltergeists * and more

Horrible.......2006-08-04
I bought this book expecting a little more from the "Great Art Bell" However the book was filled with garbage. The writing was poor, and there were too many subjects. How are you supposed to talk all about ghosts in just a couple of pages, or all about aliens in a small chapter? The chapters were just long enough for these two to interject thier mundane and path beaten opinions.
I couldnt even finish it. I currently am using the book as a temporary mouse pad, maybe one day the laser from the mouse will set the book on fire
Great introdution level book.......2006-01-19
Having been written by what hast to be considered a "Paranormal Dream Team", creator and longtime host of Coast to Coast A.M., Art Bell, and prolific author Brad Steiger, this book was a must to pick up.
After reading the book cover to cover, I have to reccomed this book as an excellent introductory source on many topics rather than an in depth investigatory work. The subjects span from ghosts to UFO's to alternate Egyptology. If you want a comprehensive study on a single topic, Brad and a myrid of other authors have several of those title available. Each subject in this book contains just enough meat and fact to tantilize you to dig a little deeper into each subject covered. Being an amiture researcher on such topics of UFO's, lycanthropy, spirituality, Earth's electromagnetic fields (Bermuda Triangle, Great Lakes Triangle and several other mystery spots) and "truth behind mythology", this is one of the books I constantly loan out to friends who have an intrest, but little knowlege of the unexplained. Everyone at that level rates it as an excellent introdution. If you have studied several of the topics for more than several years, you may want to skip this one, unless you would like to expant your repituar of subjects.
It is an average book........2005-05-23
A good introduction. It is sort of the "Dummies guide to UFO's". If you have a high school project or a college course on this subject, then you might want to get the book.
The book has about as much "meat" in at as this review.
The very basics.......2005-04-26
A really truly boring book. This book would be interesting to those who know nothing about UFO's, the occult or any paranormal subject. It is a collection of different stories ranging from Roswell to crop circles but it is all very basic. For anyone who has already read anything on any esoteric subject, this book will be very boring. It would make a good gift for someone who finds the paranormal interesting but knows nothing about anything paranormal.
Great Read.......2004-05-20
I love listening to Coast to Coast. I know people who do not want to open their mind will not enjoy this book. With some other reviewers make it sound that everything Art rights he says is the truth. This is a farse. Art just puts down many view points of people that has been on his show. You have to take everything with a grain of salt, I think its just a fun read. I don't beleive everything I read in any book, but if you are looking for one that is just fun then pick this one up. If you are going to take all of it serious then you are a nut, but if you don't open your mind and ponder it then then don't waste your time.

A misleading disappointment.......2002-04-10
I was disappointed -- really. Apparently, this book is merely a smaller, truncated version of the "real" book, by practically the same title -- Feed a Family of Four for a s Slow as $10 a week and enjoy a BITE of independence. And while I would like to read the larger version, after the experience I've had in ordering this one, I'm unlikely to go back for more. I feel like I've been misled, because this doesn't cover all of what is in the other book, and reference to it is made within this smaller version, but no reference was made to the fact that this is a smaller version of the whole in the ordering/buying process.
While some of the recipes are good, they aren't better than what can be found elsewhere -- and the whole concept of "wheat meat" grosses me out. Why not just go vegetarian? To do this program, you need to either be in a rural situation (urban neighbors don't appreciate beehives and chickens) or on a very large suburban lot. The point of cutting my food budget is to GET there -- not what the plan needs to be when I do.
Overall, I found the title misleading. If you are tempted, at least buy the "original" version -- it's got to be better than this.
Very Misleading.......2002-02-24
I purchased this book to add to my frugal cookbook collection.
Unfortunately, this book should not be classified under cookbooks, but rather homestead living. Even then, it is not up to par. I guess if you were the type of individual preparing for the former Y2K, this book would have been handy. But, not for the average individual looking for ways to save in their kitchen.
There is included a chapter on home butchering, and that is limited to rabbits. Would have found it more helpful to include wild duck, pork or turkey also.
Definitely not worth the cost.

I have the seventh edition. However they all stop at 1964 so with a few corrections, any edition should work. The coins are easily identifiable with monochrome pictures of front and back. Periodically there is an explanation paragraph. Probably due to limited space many coins are omitted. For the most part it is a catalog.

Tribute to a Classic.......2001-07-16
Hard to believe nobody has reviewed this work, but it serves to confirm my view that these reviews are pearls before swine anyway. Simply put, this is THE classic handbook for world coins for a generation of collectors; first edition, 1964. This resurrection 1984 edition by the Friedbergs is not on the best paper nor bound for heavy use and the 3-grade pricing is an unnecessary nod toward the competition: The Standard Catalog of World Coins by Chester Krause and Clifford Mishler. The SCWC is far more comprehensive than Yeoman but to get the same coverage you will need both the 19th and 20th Century editions, price about $100. Yeoman is still worth having because it is compact, because it lists coins in historical rather than denominational order, and because of its numbering system - still in use and the most sensible ever developed for world coinages.

Book Description
The origins of the synagogue remain shrouded in mystery and its development in its early centuries is only slightly better understood. This book brings together over twenty essays from Israeli, British, and American scholars to explore the development of the ancient synagogue. Combining original articles with the best of earlier studies--including nine articles here translated from the Hebrew for the first time--this collection presents the fullest critical picture of the early synagogue and the scholarly discussions concerning it. The book focuses on two central questions. First, what were the origins of the earliest synagogues, and where did they achieve the greatest growth in the early centuries? Second, what role did the early synagogue play within the Jewish community?

Book Description
Playwright, actor, director, composer and singer, Noel Coward was one of the most accomplished entertainers of the twentieth cetury. He was also an extraordinary wit, not only in his plays and songs, but also in his conversation. This new collection gathers together hundreds of his most brilliant witticisms, from lines in famous plays like Blithe Spirit or lyrics from engaging songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", to jokes from his famous telegrams, satirical asides and deceptively savage put-downs.
