Book Description

When Professor of Law Gary T. Lowenthal takes a sabbatical and descends from the ivory towers of academia, he finds himself in a very different system of criminal justice than the one he trains his students to expect. Working in the trenches at the county attorney's office, he becomes entangled in a provocative kidnapping trial, one that takes him deep into a dark and disturbing world of criminals, victims, attorneys and judges, where innocence isn't always the best defense.

4 out of 5 stars Expediency Writ Large.......2004-05-03

Gary T. Lowenthal, a law professor in Arizona, spent his sabbatical as a prosecutor in the Phoenix (Maricopa County) prosecutor's office, the office of County Attorney Rick Romley, who, according to his web site, has held office since 1989. Surprisingly naïve for a law professor who says he has taught criminal law and criminal procedure, Lowenthal tells a tawdry tale of expediency and laziness that permeates that office.

The book is thus a must-read because it exposes a plea-bargaining-based expediency that not only encourages crime by failing to adequately punish and deter criminals, but also extorts guilty pleas from persons who may not be guilty. The excuse is that plea bargaining saves money and resources. There are two main reasons why that is not true: (1) criminals who plea-bargain their way out of prison are free to continue to prey on their communities; and (2) revolving-door "justice" means that the same criminal has to be processed over and over again.

As Lowenthal admits time and time again, however, it is just plain easier to plea-bargain a case with an offer of often unjustified leniency than to try the case and get the justice the defendant, the victim, and society deserves. For most defense lawyers, of course, plea bargaining is the only way they can make a buck-it just doesn't pay for them to spend the time and effort defending their clients in a trial.

Although the book's main focus is a case that Lowenthal did try, the real story he tells is about the lame excuses he and his fellow prosecutors marshal to justify either not charging crimes (including one Lowenthal declined to charge even though the police arrested the defendant red-handed in a stolen truck) or to justify probation for folks whose crimes warrant lengthy prison terms. "Down and Dirty Justice" paints an ugly picture of how justice is bartered in Phoenix. If accurate, Phoenix should get itself a new chief prosecutor.

5 out of 5 stars An all-too-real presentation of the American judicial system.......2004-03-07

Knowledgeably written by Gary T. Lowenthal (a law professor who dared to venture from the ivory towers and work for the Arizona County Attorney's Office), Down And Dirty Justice: A Chilling Journey Into The Dark World Of Crime And The Criminal Courts is an all-too-real presentation of an American judicial system which is chronically riddled with failures, brutality, the ruthless prosecution of the innocent, and the slap on the wrist to the guilty. Forced to conclude that it is the plea bargaining prosecutors, not the judges nor the juries, that rule the criminal justice system Down And Dirty Justice is a chilling and much needed expose and warning of just how bad the system is now -- before it gets any worse within the context and pressures arising from the current "War on Terrorism" and "Patriot Act" legislation.

5 out of 5 stars Law and [Dis]order: This Is the Real Thing.......2004-01-06

This book provides insight into the way the criminal justice system really works. It's format is like Law and Order's in that it follows a case from the investigation stages to sentencing. It also features a gripping case. But, unlike Law and Order, this is the real thing. Resources and relationships -- between police and prosecutors, prosecutors and defenders, defenders and clients -- are strained. People are overworked and underpaid. Rigid policies and harsh mandatory sentencing laws prevent judges and prosecutors from fashioning punishments that truly fit the crime. Lowenthal has written a compelling, true account of our criminal justice system. I recommend it for those who want to learn more about the criminal justice system or those who just want to read an interesting true crime story.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Thought-Provoking Book!.......2004-01-05

This book is an entertaining, compelling, and somewhat grim look at American jurispudence today. Down and Dirty Justice is the riveting experiences of an experienced, ivory tower law professor thrust into the realities of today's legal system as a novice prosecutor. Early in the book, the author makes the point that his view of our legal system, though more informed than most, was still heavily colored by television. Like most Americans today, that was how I viewed our legal system, but as the author shows, TV shows such as Law and Order and The Practice, though supposedly true to life, give a far from true picture of the court system.
Mr. Lowenthal focuses on one particular case, an assault/kidnapping case. It is not glamourous; it is not high-profile. It is, however, fascinating. In his erudiate, well-written account, Professor Lowenthal details and highlights the often convulted and somewhat strange route to a kind of justice and resolution, which at times during this book were unlikely.
This book is not only well-written, but Mr. Lowenthal's insights into the legal system of today are deft and knowledgable. It is a book that anybody who has contact - or might have contact - with our legal system should read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2004-01-04

This is an excellent read and an informative book. I knew our criminal justice system was flawed but I did not realize the breadth of the problems. Though neither the victim nor the defendant is a particularly sympathetic individual, the system abused each of them. Any thoughts I had that justice usually occurs were eliminated. The author writes clearly and intelligently about a bureaucratic, political and often arbitrary legal system.

Book Description

Winter looms in this place of icy splendor near the top of the world-chilling a heart already frozen by hatred and cold dreams of revenge?

Experience and adversity have made the storyteller Chakliux a wise and powerful hunter and a man of great respect. But a tender heart is his weakness. In his village lives the beautiful Aqamdax for whom he yearns, though she is mated to a cruel and dangerous tribesman she does not love. It is Chakliux she runs to under a clear, moonlit sky while the village sleeps. But there can be no future for them together until a curse upon their people has been transcended. And then there is K'os, the healing woman--maddened and embittered by the outrage she was forced to endure years earlier--outcast and enslaved by the leader of the enemy tribe against whom she has sworn vengeance. To enact her savage and terrible justice, she will use--and destroy--anyone, if necessary, including the boy-turned-man she rescued in infancy and raised as her son: Chakliux, the storyteller.

Return now to a frozen land in a remarkable time eighty centuries past, when the spirit was tested--and strengthened--by the cruelties of nature and the great mysteries of life.

4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2005-06-01

Found it confusing at first. It seemed to drift away from the original story leaving questions unanswered but this book did become very interesting! It kept me guessing and ended up being a two-day read because I couldn't put it down. It was also kind of confusing that this book suddenly included a different group of story tellers as the people telling the story your reading. This pattern is continued in the next book and becomes more clear as to why the books are writen as they are. Highly recommend anything by Harrison!

4 out of 5 stars You Can Lose Yourself In This Book.......2001-05-25

I didn't realize that this was the second book in a trilogy when I started it (My fault. It was clearly stated on the front of the book). That may be why I found the numerous characters a bit confusing at first. But there is a list of characters and the villages they come from at the back of the book and that was a big help. I also appreciated the glossary of plants and herbs that were mentioned in the story. Despite the fact that I was unfamiliar with these characters and their past history with each other, the story was easy to follow. I found the details of life in primitive times, in the wilds of Alaska, mesmerizing. The suspense of what was going to happen to these characters kept me turning pages well into the wee hours. It isn't often that I find a book that so involves me, that the rest of the world just disappears for awhile. This is one of those books.

4 out of 5 stars Ms Harrison continues to hold your attention.......2000-08-05

As with the previous books I have read by this author, she has the ability to keep your attention and spin out an interesting tale and leave you waiting for her next publication.

4 out of 5 stars Harrison continues to write top notch material.......2000-08-05

As with the other books by this author that I have read, she continues to spell bind and "spin" a good yarn. She has the ability to make you feel as if your in the story looking on.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!.......2000-05-26

This book is a great sequel to "Song of the River". It is very well written and so engrossing that I finished it in just 2 days! Her characters have depth and reality- you can relate with them and their joys and sorrows. One of the reasons I like to read Sue Harrison's books is for her true potrayals of human behaviors with their strenghs and their weaknesses. Too many times authors write their characters as being "perfect" with nothing but positive things happening to them. Sue's stories are beautiful and believable. You will feel like you know her characters and will miss them when you have to put the book down! I am anxiously awaitng to read the third book in her trillogy! Thank you Sue!

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great........2006-03-20

An interesting story, well-told. Still, it's nowhere near the best Star Trek story I've read, even if the characters are all handled well and the plot and writing smooth and professional. Worth reading, but not worth raving about. A little too good for a three-star review, but definitely not a four-star.

5 out of 5 stars The end of DS9 prooves a fantastic voyage!.......2003-12-26

This is by far the best DS9 series to date! The opening book is incredible. The title is twofold as it reveals why Terok Nor wasn't destroyed when the Cardassians left it at the end of the Occupation, and it signifies the thrilling cliffhanger of this novel. I loved this book. It was vintage Trek with all the characters performing just as I would imagine. Odo vs Quark is especially humorours. Vash is stellar as always. Bashir is his usual comical self. Kira can hardly contain her aggression. Sisko plays the worried father/soon-to-be-husband and determined commander perfectly. Dax is brilliant, esp. her encounters with our favorite genetically engineered hew-mon. Chief O'Brien and Rom are perfect. The new Bajoran officer and all the talk of spirituality (or religion if you would) is very well handled and evokes strong reflection. The Prologue had me wondering if I had been through similiar deja vu and made me further my understanding of the Universe... What I really loved about this novel was how well the mystery of the Orbs, the murder, etc. where all handled and intertwined. I liked how bit by bit was revealed instead of all at once in the end. And I loved the idea of using Jake as a writer to further the story along, pure brilliance! The authors obviously have a firm understanding of the characters and Trekdom. Subtle allusions to previous episodes are not overdrawn but simple and cute (ie. the mention of Fajo's loot). I read this book in two days and am already starting the second book. Time travel, wormholes, pah-wraiths, Prophets, what more can you want from Star Trek DS9? And keep your eyes open for a fun appearance by Vic!

4 out of 5 stars Some great ideas, but not polished.......2003-07-02

Millennium, Book I: The Fall of Terok Nor is a fairly decent book. It was good enough that I read it in just a few days, savoring for the next volume in the trilogy. Having not read any Trek novels, I wasnýt really sure what to expect. I was happy to see that the authors managed to understand and articulate the characterýs thoughts and dialog just as well as Michael Pillar or Steven Ira Behr could ý well, almost. They didnýt get Kai Winn right and Jadzia could have been more, I dunno, eccentric possibly? The part about Nog and Jake and the ýVulcan Love Slaveý program was a little too much. I tried really hard to go back to an episode where they even joked about it or showed any interest in Quarkýs adult programs and couldnýt come up with a reference. Iým sure they could have just removed it. The book also mentioned various parts about Quark wanting his Moogie, but if I recall correctly, it was Rom that sucked up to his Moogie all the time. Bashir was a little off too, but thatýs really nitpicking I guess. The rest of my comments ring true though and youýll probably notice it yourself if you read it.

For a novel, I guess you have to expect conversations to be particularly long. I have no problem with that as I can understand the television shows are limited to 40 or 80 minutes to tell a story, thus dialog is usually short and sweet as possible. It actually makes sense that if these characters were real, they would probably converse amongst each other in this fashion. However, I must have thought to myself too many times that the length of some of these conversations didnýt feel like a DS9 production - it was always popping into my mind time and again. Jadzia and Worfýs holosuite simulation, Terrellýs conversations with Sisko on the Y-class moon and many others were the main contributors. I would say that at least 5 chapters could have been cut down considerably as they offered no further reward in the story and werenýt displaying any conflict or enlightening dialog.

Surprisingly, I also found it easy to distinguish who probably wrote which chapters. While I donýt know the exact individual (the wife or the husband), I could probably group the chapters into two columns with 90% accuracy (that is, if I had a way to verify that of course). The chapters in the first column were excellent while the other column were simply average, moving the story along but obviously could have been better. The chapters about rescuing quark or the fighting with the thieves in his bar were particularly unmoving ý I just didnýt care for some reason and was itching to tell the writers to get on with the story. These scenes should have been cool, but for some reason I just didnýt care, so I attribute to poor writing than anything. The conversations with Quark and Odo were also long at the beginning. While some of the dialog captured the characters rather well, some of it didnýt. I think Quark was the real problem here, asking too many questions and being more concerned than he usually is. While they made up for it at various times in the book, it just didnýt seem right. Or, maybe it was Odo who should have uninitiated the conversations to begin with. Either way, these was only self-serving to the plot and didnýt feel natural.

There are some really good scenes with a new Bajoran commander talking with Sisko, and later with OýBrien. The new commanderýs view about Bajoran religion was extremely refreshing and it would have been great if the show had looked more into these issues. I donýt agree that a person of the rank ýCommanderý would be so nervous and unsure of herself (as shown later on in the novel after these conversations with Sisko and OýBrien), but I suppose the writers have some reason for that in book 2 perhaps? If they donýt, they should have made her a simple Lieutenant as someone with that lackluster character could never be a Commander ý I mean, comparing her to Riker, or Sisko in season 1 just doesnýt draw a nice happy conclusion there.

Another small complaint is that they use Vic in the story. This was bad on a few levels. Firstly, they were trying to jam in too many characters ý the Prylar, the 3 Cardassians, Vash, Base, the 3 Andorians, etc. ý throwing in another character didnýt help the story. Secondly, his role was only self-serving to the plot because the writers couldnýt come up with a way to get the crew out of a holographic security cell. I personally donýt like how the writers cop-out like this ý it reminds me too much about the novelýs bad points.

The writers really knew Chief OýBrien, however. If I didnýt know any better, I could have sworn it was really him. From all the things about his viewpoints in engineering to his caring about his family, and his actions throughout the book, it just felt like they hit a sweet spot. Perhaps the writers had a personal connection with the character as they watched the television show themselves.

Overall, itýs an ýokayý book. Maybe it should have received 3 1/2 stars instead. The ending was certainly pretty good and Iým looking forward to see what happens, if anything else. I hope they learned from the mistakes I listed above so that the second installment can be a lot better. And before you start thinking Iým not a Star Trek fan, I really am. Iýve loved the DS9 series the most and Iýve watched every episode from TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. I tried to be fair and give this book and honest review. Thanks for listening.

5 out of 5 stars DS9 - Millennium: The Fall of Terok Nor - Simply amazing!.......2003-06-06

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Millennium Book I of III - The Fall of Terok Nor

Given that I continue to read all of the Star Trek series in order of their particular chronological release dates, I've looked at this particular trilogy for quite some time with no small measure of anxiousness to get to them. Now that I've made it to them, they were quite well worth the wait and shall be savored for quite some time. Oddly enough, outside of Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens past collaborations with William Shatner and his post Star Trek Generations dual trilogies, I've not read any of their previous works which is something I shall soon remedy for they're an amazing writing team which also leads me to believe I shall have to also check out their non Star Trek works as well.

To continue the adulations for this writing team; in this first novel of the Millennium trilogy the authors write with a great sense of fluidity and an overall well balanced style. Unlike some previous Deep Space Nine authors, they show a great sense of knowledge of the series and Star Trek as a whole. They captured each characters personality and style flawlessly! Had this particular trilogy been set in either Star Trek The Next Generation or Star Trek Voyager series it most certainly would've garnered three hardbacks, but fortunately for us, Pocket Books up to this point still wasn't willing to foot the bill for a Deep Space Nine hardback even for this trilogy which so richly deserved it!

Set somewhere in the frenetic sixth season of Deep Space Nine, Millennium is a project of epic proportions for Star Trek fiction that simply leaves one breathless as they're completely enthralled in this page turner that compels the reader at a blistering pace from chapter to chapter leading you into a highly climatic ending and setting up book two, The War of the Prophets.

    The premise:

This story spans the history of Bajor and the short six years that Starfleet and Captain Sisko has been in command of Deep Space Nine. Going back to the Day of Withdrawal, the day the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor after sixty years of brutal oppression and slavery, this novel begin with Quark, Odo and Garak witnessing an event they will not remember for sometime...

Captain Sisko finds himself and his crew in the precarious position of trying to solve the murder of an Andorian smuggler whose body guards wish to seek revenge upon Quark who they believe murdered the Andorian. At the same time, Vash appears on the station bringing her usual trouble with her and three Cardassians show up as well, despite being in the middle of the Dominion War in which they're clearly an enemy species. Add all of these events up and throw in some extremely interesting Bajoran artifacts that may spell doom for the station and what you have here is one of the most intriguing and compelling Star Trek Deep Space Nine stories ever put to print!

    I highly recommend this first book and the entire trilogy to all fan of Star Trek and in particular Deep Space Nine fans. {ssintrepid}

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific Trilogy.......2003-03-11

When I first began the Millenium trilogy, a scant two weeks ago I was a little disappointed. The first book has so much going on from so many vantage points that I didn't know how it related to either the overall premise or the forthcoming continuing novels. Boy was I surprised by Book II which at some points reminded me of Stephen King's The Stand where the DS9 crew is reduced to watching helplessly as their universe past/present/future crumbles at the hands of Kai Weyoun. Book III---Inferno goes even further because it tackles what is at the heart of understanding The Prophets, the Celestial Temple, Capt. Sisko's existence, the whole DS9 mythos which boils down to non-linear time. The concept of time having to be first explained to the Prophets and then their comprehending it enough so that they can teach/reveal/manipulate Sisko that what is always has been, what shall be is and that there is no what and that there always has been a thought that is staggering for a tv series/serial novel to accomplish. But the authors pull it off with an aplomb and yet a technical knowledge of physics and technobabble that makes it all comprehensible. It's good to see that the DS9 crew all experience different ideas of faith, belief in whether or not the Prophets are true "Gods" or merely interferring/insane aliens because it fosters a belief that all beliefs should be respected. One man's religion being anothers science. Even at the most desperate of times, Sisko and crew fight against the Pah-Wraiths destructive intent but never they're right to believe, a critical distinction. And the crew, particularly Sisko and to a heavy science bent Jadzia Dax and the surprising twist character of Commander Arla continuously question the Prophets, their pre-destined path for him and the world of Bajor that allows this final installment to securely lock with the two before into a terrific, wryly funny, dark, poignant story about faith and how the universe is bigger than any one crew. The DS9 crew (including Quark (who is both heroic and understandibly terrified, Nog (a boy/future Captain who risks literally everything to becming one of teh progenitors of all Bajoran faith with admiral Jean Luc Picard and the thief/vamp Vash, the hilariously dark Garak and Rom (who Garak secretly suspects is a master Ferengi scientist hiding as a dimwit)hurled through time, non-time, space, life and death have an intrinsic bond of group humanity/integrity/humor that makes them rival the original Star Trek Enterprise crew. A nice point about these novels is that it occurs a year in DS9 time before the final show so lots of plot points and foreshadowings are filled in to make the time spent with this crew even more rich to the serious fan. I am a serious Sisko fan, Avery Brooks fan, from way before DS9 but he embodies a captain, a father, a man, and to some degree though it isn't overtly stated, a Black man (the thought of Sisko being a discriminated against sci-fi writer of the early 20th century who is merely imagining/scrawling the DS9 adventures on a wall that Sisko's son, Jake will one day write as a book himself four hundred years in the future about a man in the 1950's who is a discriminated against Black sci-fi writer who writes about DS9 is chilling, non-linear and equisitely managed and bent and twisted and toyed with so that you actually leave with several fully co-existing, non-conflicting, non-linear beliefs about exactly what's going on. Forget STTNG, DS9 would be the hit Star Trek film Paramount is looking for! Makes you wonder what's going on with Voyager (Seven, Janeway and the Doctor pop up here too).

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book comparable to The Four Agreements.......2002-06-07

I am currently finishing reading THE FOUR AGREEMENTS and found that many of the issues and ideas mentioned in Ruiz's book are further expanded upon in Blackwolf's book. Where THE FOUR AGREEMENTS is a little pocket companion, SACRED SELF is the expanded edition--with exercises and ideas to work on beyond reading the book. I would highly recommend SACRED SELF to anyone who wants to live abundantly and is concerned about the abundancy of the lives of future generations.

            Book Description

During the second half of the twentieth century, Scandinavian potters and glassmakers drew on elements present in China and Japan during the period of the Sung Dynasty to produce pieces of beauty and elegance that combined subtle glazes and classical shapes. Scandinavian design combined the fundamentals of craftsmanship, quality, subtlety, and a relationship to the natural surroundings. With 390 color photographs to illustrate the work, this book is a must for the ceramics and glass collector as well as those who appreciate the results of a collaboration between artist and nature. Concentrating on designs produced in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland following World War II, the book presents the works of ceramics companies such as Rorstrand, Gustavsberg, Arabia, Saxbo, and Palshus, as well as the glass of Orrefors, Kosta, and Iittala. Designs by some of the greatest names in contemporary Scandinavian ceramic and glass design, including Berndt Friberg, Stig Lindberg, Gunnar Nyland, Wilhelm Ka**ge, Edvard Hald, Sven Palmquist, Tapio Wirkala, Timo Sarpeneva, and Vicke Lindstrand, will be appreciated by all students of twentieth century design. The guide to current prices will please the collector.
