Kelson is now a young king. It takes pretty much zero time before he has problems with those annoying church wankers.

An archbishop is up in arms, wanting one of the nobles to basically not be Deryni.

Threats of excommunication, conflict, and running around ensue, as well as magical stuffups, executions, and outright battle. Not a good time for all, by any stretch.

I'm sorry to say that Deryni Checkmate is dreadfully dull.
There are two subplots which do nothing to advance the story, the characters are flat, and the setting just doesn't make sense.

I'd recommend skipping the series.

I love Katherine Kurtz's deryni novels. This one is the weakest of the Deryni Chronicles but it is necessary in the set up for the next book. I know lots of people hate that but I think she did a good job of trying to describe the events within the kingdom and what could be happening by those who threaten at the boarders. If you like historical type fiction and a bit of mystery and magic this book could fit the bill.

I think Katherine's greatest talent is getting you to feel what the characters feel. I also think she does a great job of describing the social situation in her settings.

Someone once told me "Women can't write good fantasy because they're afraid to kill your favorite characters" ... I then introduced him to Katherine Kurtz and the Deryni. I never heard that statement again.

I have been reading this epic saga over and over again for 20 years, and I will be reading them over and over again for the next 20 years.

Katherine Kurtz's blending of "Magic" with fact based "Church" ritual and her use of real medieval living truly makes you feel that the Kingdom of Gwynedd could truly have existed.

If you are looking for a series of books that you just cannot put down, these will keep you on the edge of your seat turning pages well into the wee hours of the morning. Though I must warn you to never assume what will happen next; and I advise always having a tissue on hand just in case.

Previous books a must.......2002-12-28

This book focuses on the anceint battle of church versus state, and it's effects on Mrs. Kurtz magical kingdom of Gwynedd. Unfortunately for the characters involved the age old battle hasn't yet been solved, and there doesn't seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

To read this one you would almost have to have read the previous novels in the series. Mrs. Kurtz usually recaps well enough to make it possible for her readers to pick-up the series mid-stream, but the plot thus far must have become too involved. Still, this remains a very well written book, and you will finish it wanting more.

An Excellent Read.......2004-09-24

I loved this book, with but one complaint: The last third should have been the last two-thirds. The pace quickens immensely, losing the development and detail that I thought shone in the beginning of the book. The plot is perfectly there, it just gave me a feeling of being rushed through.

That said, this is one author who deserves his place in my book collection, and I will be buying more of his works.

This was the first Sci-fi book I ever read and I have been hooked ever since. Light and fast paced it's well worth the time and all fans of Dietz will love it.

This book is a quick and light read. While no literary masterpiece, Dietz has a good setting filled with nice details. The book reminds me of certain elements of the original SciFi roleplaying game, Traveller.

wow! what a great read. It's so hard to find great writing, plot, and structure all in one book. This book combines wonderful discriptive writing that pulls you into every seen, a keep you up all night plot, and a witty group of characters you fall in love with. I did'nt want the book to end.

Mike Daniels' first adventure kept me up way too late. I was unable to put it down this pleasant blend of mystery and political intrigue. I can't wait for his and Abbey's next adventure.

Author Mike Silvestri has spun a fun story mixing wit, thrills, politics, intrigue, comedy and murder into a great read. From the very beginning, Bark of the Tree drew me in, picked up speed, and left me surprised at the end. Abby, Mike's lazy sheepdog, had a unique take of her owner's life that had me laughing out loud. Poor Mike Daniels! Combining that aspect, along with a great supporting cast of characters, rounded out a very satisfying story. I'm looking forward to the next book.

This is one of the most boring books I have ever read. Although his thoughts of prose and propaganda are evident. This is the worst mystery book I've ever read. I bought it on-line and can't send it back. So, you got me. I can't see the involvement in the subtifuge of politics. And the whole thing with the dog is just lame. Thanks anyway.

Bark of the Tree kept me reading til the end. Lovers of dogs, politics, reporters, trail running and romance will want to read this story of hapless computer geek Mike Daniels, whose run through a Pennsylvania state park takes a deadly turn, and Mike finds himself running for cover. All the story's threads are neatly woven and tied up at the end, where the solution to the mystery will surprise you. Looking forward to the next Lazy Dog mystery!

The Rowan Patchwork books are an interesting hybrid. Part art book, part catalogue, part how-to manual, put together by a trans-Atlantic quilting mafia of great talent, these books (or magazines, as they prefer to call them) give very intense pleasure. They are a showcase for a new flowering of "glorious patchwork," to steal a phrase, under the nurturing auspices of Kaffe Fassett and Liza Pryor Lucy, and featuring new quilt designs by both British and American quilters. Number 4 contains new work by Fassett and Lucy, as well as American sisters Mary Mashuta and Roberta Horton, and a sprinkling of lesser known but also talented quilters. They are presented first in a casual gallery in domestic settings, then later as part of detailed instructions for constructing them. In between there are several pages displaying Kaffe Fassett's latest fabric collections, and a charming featurette on one of the contributors, Liza Prior Lucy. The quilts in the collection are mostly traditional in the sense of being geometric, but the exquisite color selection and artistic sense that infuses them makes them stand out from their ancestry. First of all: The book's content is o.K. and provides a lot of information on Meg Ryan's life - private and work. Although some of the details seem to be "borrowed" elsewhere and do not match to other sources the author still tries his best to cover all you can get about actress Meg Ryan.
It is a strange book (see my review title) because it seems to be "handwritten" in layout and style and the pictures are the worst copies I ever saw. The "typewriting" is hard to read because the quality is poor.
Nevertheless: content is what counts - four stars...

Pleasantly Surprised.......2003-01-28

When I first decided to buy this book, I really didn't know what to expect. I am a Meg Ryan fan, but I didn't know much about her personal life - until I read this book. First I want to say that this is the best written biography I have ever read on anyone. This book not only talks about her films, but also her career, past loves, troubles, childhood, etc . . . Everything! It is also very interesting and keeps you turning the pages! All in all, it is a masterpiece! Highly recommended!
