5 out of 5 stars A Great American Novel........1999-01-18

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I just could not put it down. It reminded me of "Catcher In The Rye" however I thought it was even better. It was exciting, sad, funny,it had everything. With all the great reviews I have seen on this book, I can't imagine that I have not heard about this character or this author. This character, I believe, will join all the other great American characters in literature.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatest books I've ever read........1999-01-08

This is an American tragedy. It is truly one of the greatest books I've ever read. The writing is so rich and so funny, it reminds one of "Catcher In The Rye" only I feel it is even better. The whole time I kept wondering if a movie is going to be made about this, because I believe this character, Darrel Skaitts, will be remembered with all the great characters in literature. It was one of the great reading pleasures of my life...

    Book Description

See the young man of refined mind in a ball room! He is leaning against the woodwork in a distant doorway, he scarcely knows what to do with himself; and he is now striving to interest himself in the conversation of a group of men twice his age. I will not say he is shunned; but neither the matrons nor the young girls make any advances towards him. The young girls looking so sweet--in the oneness of their fresh hair, flowers, dresses, and glances--are being introduced, are getting up to dance, and the hostess is looking round for partners.

                    4 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2007-03-12

Not perhaps as good as The Wiz Biz I but it still makes a good companion book. Light, fun, fairly clever read that pokes fun at computer programers and does not settle for the obvious.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the first!.......2005-07-09

This is a great sequel to first "Wiz Biz" volume. Now that we've met William Irving "Wiz" Zumwalt and learned about his World and his magic compiler, the fun really begins!

In the first half, "The Wizardry Cursed", an interesting set of circumstances brings two computer criminals to the cusp of the World where magic works. They are trying to take over both Wiz's World and our own, and it will take all the magic of the Council, the inventiveness of the programmers, and a lot of luck to stop them.

In the second half, "The Wizardry Consulted", Wiz is thrown out of his element once again, this time to a small town with a bit of a dragon problem. He needs to dust off all his knowledge of how consultants work, in order to keep the city council busy so he can get his job done. In this book, the usual programmer quotes that begin many chapters have been replaced by quotes from the "consultant's handbook", telling how to B.S. and get away with it.

Although there are plenty of bad puns, and the jokes may be a bit too technical for most people, overall this book is a great read.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating breath of fresh air.......2003-11-04

This wonderful book is actually two books for the price of one: The Wizardry Cursed and The Wizardry Consulted! These novels tell the continuing story of Walter Irving "Wiz" Zumwalt, a computer programmer and magician extraordinaire. Hijacked from Earth to a world where magic works and technology doesn't, Wiz realized that magic could be worked liked programming, and turned the world upside down. First, Wiz must control how the "new" magic is used, so as to avoid a war between humans and the powerful beings that have run the world up to this point. But, this proves to not be the hardest job facing Wiz, when a couple of malicious hackers from Earth make their own journey to the other side.

This is a great book, one that I have enjoyed reading several times. The system of magic that Rick Cook used was a fascinating breath of fresh air, and I must say that I enjoyed the stories and characters immensely! I highly recommend this light-hearted swords-and-sorcery fantasy to you.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is Frank Miller's follow-up to his hugely successful Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, one of the few comics that is widely recognized as not only reinventing the genre but also bringing it to a wider audience.Set three years after the events of The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again follows a similar structure: once again, Batman hauls himself out of his self-imposed retirement in order to set things right. However, where DKR was about him cleaning up his home city, Gotham, DKSA has him casting his net much wider: he's out to save the world. The thing is, most of the world doesn't realize that it needs to be saved--least of all Superman and Wonder Woman, who have become little more than superpowered enforcers of the status quo. So, the notoriously solitary Batman is forced to recruit some different superpowered allies. He also has his ever-present trusty sidekick, Robin, except that he is a she, and she is calling herself Catwoman. Together, these super-friends uncover a vast and far-reaching conspiracy that leads to the President of the United States (Lex Luthor) and beyond.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is largely an entertaining comic, but much of what made The Dark Knight Returns so good just doesn't work here. Miller's gritty, untidy artwork was perfect for DKR's grim depiction of the dark and seedy Gotham City, but it jars a bit for DKSA, which is meant to depict an ultra-glossy, futuristic technocracy. Lynn Varley's garish coloring attempts to add a slicker sheen, but the artwork is ultimately let down by that which worked so well for DKR--this time around, it just feels sloppy and rushed. The same is true of the book's denouement, which happens so quickly that it leaves the reader reeling and looking for more of an explanation. Moreover, DKSA is packed full of characters who will mean little to those unfamiliar with the DC Comics universe (e.g., the Atom, the Elongated Man, the Question). Perhaps the book's biggest failing is that where The Dark Knight Returns gave comic book fans a base from which to evangelize to theuninitiated, The Dark Knight Strikes Again is just preaching to the converted. Comic book superhero fans will find much to enjoy here, but others would be better off sticking with the original. --Robert Burrow

Cassie, the young Robin has decided she would rather be Catgirl, instead. Being older, I guess she reckons she looks good in a catsuit.

Now a more experienced field operative, she leads missions for the Batman.

There is a Kingdom Come type feel to this story as the heroes who are government sanctioned, and those who are not, line up for or against the Dark Knight.

the artwork is too sloppy to look at, the story is a meandering wad of lard... what the hell, Frank, did you whip all this out in a week for some desperate need for cash? Give your fans the respect they deserve.

3 out of 5 stars "Sequel" to the Legendary "Dark Knight Returns".......2007-07-19

Frank Miller raised the bar for comics when he released the original 4-issue prestige format mini-series in 1986. It was one of two books that redefined comics for the 21st century (the other is Alan Moore's Watchmen). Every comic book fan has read (or should have read) it. It should be on your bookshelf right now!

But here we have the less-than-spectacular sequel, "The Dark Knight Strikes Again." The sequel is much more standard capes-and-tights super-hero action than the darker "Dark Knight Returns," and can be avoided by all but the most diehard fans. It doesn't strike any of the same notes as the original series. What we have here could almost be considered Silver Age super-hero action, rather than the post-modernity of "Dark Knight Returns." Miller experimented by deviating from the formula that's worked for him on classics such as "Sin City" and "Daredevil," but by doing so leads readers into different territory that they may not be interested in following him to. This is a "sequel" in name only.

3 out of 5 stars Wacky Wayne Chronicles.......2007-07-19

If you are expecting anything nearly as good as the Dark Knight Returns, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. While I was slightly disappointed with the book overall, I've gotta say that this is one of the craziest comics (graphic novel, whatever) that I've ever read in my entire life. It's worth reading at least and while it doesn't ruin the memory of the original Dark Knight Returns, it's just too out there for me. The art is really funky and kind of sloppy, the writing isn't Miller at his peak and the story is a weird mishmash of cameos and political satire.

And the fate of one character in particular (I don't want to ruin the surprise because the individual shows up literally out of nowhere as one of the piece's main villains and shows up almost nothing like you remember them) was just mind boggling.

Worth a read but I don't know about recommending a purchase on this.

3 out of 5 stars Is it Superman or Batman?.......2007-06-12

What the hell, is this story suppossed to be about Superman or batman? This second part is not as good as the first one. It is more about Superman and other DC characters than Batman himself and in the end it doesn't make any sense. I guess, I have to read it again to undestand. Okay, if you are a Batman fan, like myself, but don't pay full price for it.

This work contains the first English translations of a collection of Hittite myths. The translations are based on the original tablets on which the myths were written, and take into account recent textual discoveries and published studies on the texts. Revised and corrected, this second edition includes an additional newly published Hurrian myth. In addition to translations, the volume includes a series of brief introductions to the myths, a glossary of names and technical terms, and indexes of proper names and topics/subjects. Accessible to nonspecialists, the translations also preserve column and line count for the convenience of scholars.

One may not be familar with the Hittite versions but if one knows Greek or Mesopotamian myths one will discover much in common. Enough for a strong inluence across cultures is a mater best left to each reader.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Variety of Afghan Designs Suitable for All Knitters.......2006-03-24

"The Little Box of Knitted Throws" contains 20 designs for knitted afghans and throws. Each pattern is printed on a high-quality laminated card with a full-color picture of the finished throw on the front, and the instructions for that throw on the back of the card. The advantage of the "Little Box Series" is that the knitter can take only the card for the project at hand out of the box and conveniently store it in your project bag. The box of cards closes with a handy magnetic closure. The other reviewers of this product noted missing cards or printing errors, but I'm happy to say that the cards I purchased are all intact and printed correctly.

Almost all of the designs in the "Little Box of Knitted Throws" could be comfortably knitted by even novice knitters, as all the throws except for one (Easy Aran Squares)require only the knit stitch, the purl stitch, yarn overs, and the slip stitch. The "Easy Aran Squares" is a simple and beautiful cable design which would make an excellent first cable project. One of the great features of this collection of throws is that all the projects are made with easy-to-find and reasonably priced yarns. Another plus is that most of the designs are knitted on circular needles, thus eliminating the need for sewing lots of pieces together once your knitting is complete.

I've decided to knit the afghan called "Arbor" which features a lovely wavy patterns with some lacy openwork. In this design the openwork is created by simple yarn overs. The directions for this design are clearly written and easy to follow. Another great design in this collection is called "School Spirit", which is a beautiful and simple diagonal slip-stitch design in two colors. You can substitute your favorite school colors and knit a personalized throw which would be perfect in a dorm room.

There's a great variety of designs in here, which will provide knitters with many beautiful patterns to choose from and hours of pleasant knitting.

                          3 out of 5 stars Good...but.......2006-02-25

I saw this little box of throws in at a retail bookseller, and would have bought it then, but one of the "pages" was missing. So, I came home and ordered it from Amazon. I'm satisfied, but wouldn't ya know, the only project I've done from it, I had to figure out the pattern for myself. So, beware. The publisher does have corrections to other publications on their website, but not for this particular publication. I sent an email to them with comments about the error, but did not get anything back from the publisher. I'm not an experienced knitter, but was able to figure out the error and complete one of the throws so that it actually looked like the photo. That's why I gave it an average rating.....and I'm not sure if any of the other patterns have errors. Guess I'll find out along the way!

4 out of 5 stars Box full of treasures!.......2006-01-07

When I saw "Cabin Cozy", I knew I had to make it! The Little Box of Knitted Throws is filled with treasures. I keep going back to decide which one I will do next! However, the pattern on one of the cards, "Ruby Knights" did not come out. The packaging of "little box" is very cool and convenient to use.

                            Book Description

This volume focuses on the role Christian churches have played in Africa's democratisation movements since the late 1980s. In some cases churchmen have presided over national conferences; in many, Christians comprise arguably the most significant segment of civil society. In some countries pastoral letters have challenged dictators; in others, churches have provided an essential support for the status quo. The book comprises both theoretical analyses and case studies. The theoretical discussions include the history of Church-State relations; theology and democracy; Pentecostalism and democracy; the problems of consolidating democracy. The 13 case studies sketch the historical context, and then critically examine developments up till late 1993. The book will prove particularly useful to students of Third World Christianity, African historians and political scientists, and all interested in the socio-political role of Christianity.

What made Metro-goldwyn-Mayer was not its possessions, but its people, men and women under contract to put together and appear in the motion pictures it produced. Rich with anecdotes and never before told stories, this book is an eyewitness look at the way Hollywood was born. Samuel Marx knew all the people he writes about. He digs under the facade, telling the real story, the grit, dirt, and emotion behind the glitz, smiles and songs of the MGM studios.
