Thought provoking stories.......2001-06-26
"A Forbidden Passion" is an excellent collection of short stories by Uruguayan writer Cristina Peri Rossi. The stories have been translated from Spanish into English by Mary Jane Treacy.
Rossi's work reminds me of the stories of Jorge Luis Borges: she frequently plays with notions of reality, psychology, and geographic dislocation. "The Trip" in particular is a Borgesian gem in which she writes about an imaginary language that has some remarkable characteristics. Other tales satirize religion and politics, or reflect on artistic creativity itself. Overall, this is a richly imaginative collection that is full of irony and witty absurdism.
An excellent book.......1999-12-22
This collection of short stories is an excellent example of the literature of Cristina Peri Rossi. A master of language and logic, CPR constantly undermines them to spare the reader from his or her own inclination to fall in the trap of cliches.
Language and logic are only tools for simplification. Once readers free themselves of the binds that trap them on a linear logic, the circularity of language and its meanings, they can capture the stories as an image. Unlike other famous Latin American writers, who tend to take the reader by the hand on a wonder journey, CPR leaves the reader defenseless to the image.
Book Description
To the Brink of WarAfter nine hundred years of peace, unrest among the magical Qirsi people has blossomed into a conspiracy against their Eandi rulers. Led by a mysterious Qirsi "Weaver" who can reach into the minds of others even in their sleep, the rebellion is now turning Qirsi against Qirsi, as it weakens alliances among the Eandi. Some Qirsi ministers are torn by their loyalty to their lords; others are ready to join the increasingly violent rebellion. Even some Qirsi who oppose the rebellion take sides against their lords, as one Eandi lord prepares for war against his peers. Yet as the world tilts toward terrible upheaval, some stand firm against the chaos. Grinsa, a Qirsi gleaner, dreads a war he knows would spell disaster for Qirsi and Eandi alike... Grinsa may be the only person who can halt the slide into full-scale war. Along with his sister, archminister to their peaceloving king, he risks death to save the realm. But as the fragile peace unravels, their efforts may be too late, as realms plunge toward war, goaded by traitors within their gates.

Moving along nicely.......2007-05-31
If you enjoyed the first two books of the "Winds of the Forelands" series, you'll most likely enjoy this one as well. The plotlines that were established in the first two entries of the series are all addressed here (to varying degree) and for the most part the action carries forward and moves us closer to an ultimate resolution. While at times I felt that the plot was in danger of being stretched to accommodate future volumes, by the time I finished book 3 I was satisfied with the pace and with the new twists and developments.
"Bonds of Vengeance" introduces several new characters and settings, and reintroduces some others that haven't been seen since book 1. For the most part the characters remain rather two dimensional, although there are exceptions to the rule. Tavis in particular seems to be evolving into a somewhat complex character, and I can't help feeling for Kearney & Keziah's situation, which becomes even more layered and nuanced in this outing.
Overall I felt that BoV was a fine addition to a series which has consistently held my interest, and continues to do so.
So many threads being woven..........2007-05-07
Bonds of Vengeance is the long-awaited third volume in David Coe's Winds of the Forelands series.
This volume focuses almost entirely on the political intrigue, which was hinted at in Rules of Ascension: Book One of Winds of the Forelands and dramatically increased in Seeds of Betrayal (Winds of the Forelands, Book 2). Coe reveals just how entangled the Qirsi Conspiracy is in the events of every major house and kingdom in the land. Some of the plots and characters introduced in Seeds of Betrayal are fleshed out here, but the sheer volume of characters and various intrigues makes it hard to keep track of exactly who is betraying who. You really need to re-read both previous novels before attempting Bonds of Vengeance, and even then it gets a bit confusing.
You can't help but admire Coe's ambition. In just three installments he has created enough characters and sub-plots to make Robert Jordan blush. I just hope he can bring them all to a satisfying conclusion in (far) fewer volumes than the aforementioned Mr. Jordan!
Despite the relatively slow pace, Bonds of Vengeance isn't as focused on character development as I expected. The only characters we really get a better knowledge of are the assassin Cadel and the Weaver, who sadly remains somewhat two-dimensional.
It's not quite as compelling as Seeds of Betrayal, but Bonds of Vengeance is still a fine chapter in a very engaging series that should appeal to most fantasy fiction fans. Expect to be entertained, and you will not be disappointed.
I waited a long time for this paperback..........2006-08-18
Bonds of Vengeance is the third in a 5 book series entitled the Winds of the Forelands. The previous books in order are Rules of Ascension and Seeds of Betrayal. Winds of the Forelands is the second series by Coe. Although featured prominently in the first 2 books, Tavis and the woes of the Eandi, for the most part, play second fiddle to the story lines of the Qirsi and Grinsa here. The Eandi are the ruling culture in the land. They have at times suppressed the culture and persons of the white-haired, magic welding, Qirsi. By the time of this novel, many of the Eandi nobles and landowners have Qirsi members in their households, some of whom are highly placed. This book ties up some loose ends started in the first chapter of the saga and reviled details of the Qirsi
Book Description
or nine hundred years, the Forelands knew peace, but unrest among the magical Qirsi people has blossomed into a conspiracy against the Eandi rulers. What started with the occasional 'accidental' death of a lord has exploded into violence, rending the fabric of Forelands society. Led by a mysterious Qirsi 'Weaver' whose powers can reach into the minds of others even in their sleep, the rebellion is now turning Qirsi against Qirsi and weakening alliances among the Eandi. Some Qirsi ministers are torn between plotting to overthrow the Eandi and staying loyal to their lords; others are already active in the burgeoning and increas--ingly violent rebellion. Even some Qirsi who oppose the rebellion are forced to take sides against their lords, while an Eandi lord in league with the conspiracy prepares for war against rival houses. Grinsa, a Qirsi gleaner, is trying to avert a war that would decimate Qirsi and Eandi alike. Traveling with Lord Tavis of Curgh as the young noble seeks revenge on the assassin who killed his betrothed and thus set the chaos in motion, Grinsa may be the only person who can stop the Weaver from shattering the long peace. But even Grinsa can't do it alone. His sister Keziah, archminister to King Kearney, himself a staunch advocate of peace, works to prevent war, too. They may be too late, though, as realms plunge toward war, goaded by traitors within their gates.

Lost Focus in Bonds of Vengeance.......2005-12-26
I've read his Tobyn-Ser series and it was well and tightly written. Great world building and character development.
His first two book in the Foreland series were just as well written, but his third book Bonds of Vengenace looses focus with reptitive scenes of assasination and endlessly new characters, as well as, endlessly new kingdoms with their own political intrigues that keeps cropping up to the point where you couldn't care less who they are and why they are even in the story. This book readd like a filler. There were moments when he touched on characters in the first two Foreland books which were much more interesting to read, but it was like watching soaps where each character gets his or her five minute in the sun. Even thought he is an excellent writer, this story just couldn't hold my attention. I found myself skipping chunk of the book till the end.
Seriously, wait for it to come out in paperback. This book is a filler.
Not as good.......2005-05-10
I very much enjoyed the other books in this series, but this one was, to me, very disappointing. It was very slow with many, many characters and too many states/provinces with their rulers. I didn't see any need for the child or love interest.
ANOTHER WINNER IN THE SERIES.......2005-04-04
David, David, David....I have just one thing to say...write faster! This series has gotten better and better, and I can hardly wait to see what happens next. I couldn't put this book down and it is an amazing piece of fantasy. If you've never given David B. Coe a chance, here's your chance. This is some really intriguing, well-written fantasy.
Another great piece of work from David Coe.......2005-02-22
Coe really does a nice job building the intrigue level between the humans and the Qirsi. Definitely a palpable tension between the Qirsi serving as ministers and their respective dukes, etc. That's a credit to Coe.
Coe continues to build on the layers he established in the first two books, in particular Grinsa and his relationship to Tavis and Cressane.
I definitely would rank Coe's work right up there with the best. He probaby isn't as wide a scope or as deep as Martin and Erikson, but he's very, very good. I Highly recommend that you read this series.
Great continuation of the Series.......2005-02-15
This is the third book in David Coe's five book series entitled "Winds of the Forelands".
I am finding that each book is better than the book before.
If you have read the other books the story just gets deeper and more interesting as the story proceeds.
The intrigue, betrayals, and hardships that some of the characters have to go through are amazing.
The changing of alliances and repercussions will even make you wonder whom to trust.
The story is original and refreshing.
Mr Coe is one of the authors whose titles I am always waitng for the new one to come out.
And this one was no exception and well worth the wait because of the publication delays in the title coming out.
I can not wait for the next book in this exciting series.

Hold on to this one!.......2004-02-08
Tarrent yes it is close to Tryant, close and to good to be true.
Keely is a loving daughter, and she will take on anyone for her mother, Catherine. Catherine has been asked to marry her boss Lucas Varley Tarrent's father.
Tarrent decided to stop the wedding, by paying off Catherine.
Now he has to face Keely, the strong language he uses is offenseive, and he means to be.
Tarrent finds Keely isn't a push over and neither is her mom.
Although we see why Tarrent wants to stop the wedding, his father asks each and every housekeeper to marry him. So when the real thing comes along, Tarrent thinks it's just another goldigger after his father's money. What is never clear is why he didn't try to reason with his father instead of insulting Catherine, and Keely.
Keely like all of Ms. Steele her female character is not a lip biting hold back the angry retorte type. And I love it.
Because of this, Ms Steele is one of my favorite writers.
Susan Fox, Helen Brooks, Rebecca Winters are way up there with the late great Betty Neels.
Vengeance to Love.......2000-03-28
This was the first novel by Steele that I read, and after that I have been reading each of her novels. The heroine is a lovable daughter, who is not too obnoxious but has a mind of her own. Her widowed mother marries a rich widower whose son has some reservations about the marriage. This causes some skirmish between the heroine and the son. How this bond of vengeance turns into love is extremelly interesting and touching. A must-keep book and a wonderful romance.
Customer Reviews:
Probably unacceptable as a H. S. book report, yet good enuff.......2003-06-14
Written at a High School level, this is a quite literate and well developed treatment of The Hulk, Spiderman, and The Black Cat in novel form. It has all the action and story value of the comics. For newcomers, there's enough exposition to introduce the characters, done briefly enough not to annoy old-timers well acquainted with the Marvel Universe.
There's reasonable complexity here. Neither the heroes nor the bad guys are completely working together since each has his or her own agenda. Added to that is the S.A.F.E. agent working under cover representing government but not necessarily in the best interests of the heroes. And so there are easily enough complications to keep a mature reader interested.
This isn't a bad book at all for those who want to get better acquainted with the not altogether jolly green giant before they see the movie. Just bear in mind that the Hulk's creators made him a reasonable 7 footer as opposed to the 12 foot creature in the movie. Note also that the character has developed in several ways over the years and so you might find his characterization in this book somewhat different than the movie characterization.
Worth reading, even if you're way past High School age.
excelent.......2000-04-02
This book is great. It is a great beginin for a great trilogy. Though this book takes place in present time, some events go as far back as when doom tried to steal surfer's power. If you thought that the hulk we bad news, then try to imagiane fourteen hulks on the ramapge and one of them being Flash Thompson spidy's close friend and being controld by a mad man. I recomnd this series as a must buy.
much better than it should've been!.......1999-02-02
I've never liked Fingeroth or Fein as writers, so I almost didn't buy this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. And I love SAFE, who have been in a lot of the Marvel novels. The idea of Hulk clones is kind of goofy, but they made it work here.
Comic book writers can be good novel writers.......1998-11-08
In the tradition of those comic book writers who can make a successful jump to novel writing (They include Peter David and David Michelinie) Danny Fingeroth and Eric Fein made such a move in this, the first book of the "Doom's Day" trilogy. The story is very balanced out. With half the action centering on Peter Parker and the other half on Dr. Bruce Banner. Flash Thomson and the Black Cat played important roles in the story and we get to see the new head of a goverment agency make his debut here in the form of Col. Sean Morgan and his team at SAFE. Danny and Eric woked as both writers and editors of Spider-Man for a good many years at Marvel and here they get a change to work with him one more time. It was a delightful story.
A Great Book to Start off a Great Trilogy!.......1997-07-24
This is a great start of a series. A whole bunch of Hulks running around and Flash Thompson is one of them! Ofcourse the real Hulk is there as well.
Doctor Doom was in this one alot more than book 2.
Go read it.
Book Description
Using the writings of the founders and records of their conversations and activities, John Eidsmoe demonstrates the influence of Christianity on the political convictions of the founding fathers.
Customer Reviews:
Ben Franklin was a nerd.......2006-04-15
Eidsmoe is clear about his bias but the book certainly isn't an emotional diatribe. Exceptionally well researched, it's a fair and reasonable alternative to the standard dialogue in public schools and academia. A large section of the book is short and simple biographies of 13 old school patriots focused towards their religiosity. Eidsmoe's writing flowed reasonably well and they were interesting. What is outrageous is that, with the widely available historical documentation that Eidsmoe quotes from, some academics still assert that most the founding fathers were deists. Even Franklin himself advocated for official daily prayer during the constitutional convention, asserting that no empire can be made without the direct assistance of God. The original source material is completely twisted out of context or ignored all together to support the modern interpretation of church/state separation.
One can intelligently argue that current case law on church/state issues is right and proper or even that it doesn't go far enough in removing religion from government. It's a legitimate philosophical debate. However, when original source material from the founding fathers is read, it is impossible to argue the current state was ever the original intent. The founding fathers had absolutely no intention of placing the limits on religion that the modern courts do. Eidsmoe documents how Jefferson, though a Universalist and not a Christian, actually advocated earmarking federal funds for Christian missionaries to Native American tribes.
If you think Jefferson's Letter to the Danbury Baptists and his "wall of separation" phrase completely eliminated the comingling of religion and government, then read this book. Given the actual history, I don't understand why there's really any debate about this issue. This book really shows how history can be distorted and ignored to support the current spirit of the times.
Definitly worth reading.......2004-11-01
Oh how I wish every Christian in America would read this book. Too often we are weak only because we don't know our history.
The book starts out with a discussion of Calvinism, Puritanism, and some of the other "isms" that molded peoples opinions around the time of our Country's birth.
Much of the rest of this book is devoted to biographies of thirteen of our founding fathers, including Jefferson, Washington, Henry, and Adams (two of them). Some were Christians, some weren't. But the extent to which our Government was founded on Christian principles and morality is evident by studying their own writings.
The remainder of the book discusses the Biblical principles found in our founding documents (the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution), and how we've come from there to the godless mess we're in now. Just the last couple of chapters were in themselves worth the entire cost of the book!
Political TRUTH at last!.......2004-08-17
I'm familiar with the Founders own writings (original source documents) and I find this book to be an excellent faithful and true account of the important role of religion (Christianity) in the founding of this great nation - Gods New Israel (the New Jerusalem). I note that there are certain high-minded, haughty critics who with their post-modern jargon and foo-foo biased propaganda seek to belittle this great book however I exhort all those seeking for political truth to read this book. It is excellent, and once you have this knowledge, you will not be deceived by foo-foo propaganda from the limp-wristed liberal left. Thank you John - brilliant work.
A bit simplistic.......2004-01-09
John Eidsmoe's book is definately relevant to any inquiry into the relation between the Church and the Civil magistrate, particularly in regard to that relation at the founding of the constitution. The naive assumption that politics operate in an epistemic vaccum is, hopefully, washed away by Eidsmoe's presentation of general philosophical and religious precommitments of our nation's early politicians.
I believe Eidsmoe is a bit optomistic in regard to the orthodoxy of the faith of the constitutional founders, definately underplaying the Masonic influence on their views. Whatever their particular views, Christians should hardly claim them in defense of a thoroughly anti-christian covenantal document that established the *people* as the Sovereign of the nation. Vague references to God hardly establish a Christian nature to the document, though undoubtably, as Eidsmoe states, the structure itself can obviously be attributed to the Presbyterian model of government.
With that said, the book is, in the end, worth reading. Particularly the 22nd chapter, "Into the Third Century: Where does the US go from Here?" Eidsmoe, likely unintentionally, evidences the futility of a covenantal document that establishes human autonomy as Sovereign by it's thorough subjectivism. Eidsmoe demonstates this with a number of penal examples (what *exactly* is the normative referant for 'cruel and unusual' punishment today?)
After reading this book, I would highly recommend Gary North's "Political Polytheism" to supplement it with a little Biblical orthodoxy (keep in mind, Eidsmoe is a dispensationalist - *gag*)

Customer Reviews:
Maybe not so Practical.......2007-08-23
As a watchmaker by Trade, i bought this out of curiosity. From the techinques of openning a watch case to the description of indiviual watch parts is grossly outdated. New technology in watch production rendered this book obsolete and would only be suited to someone whose advanced in their studies as a watchmaker rather than a novice.
Practical Watch Repairing Book.......2007-08-13
This product, though very good, was not what I expected. It is apparently a very early book on watch repair (updated through the years), written by a watch repairman. The book targets persons wanting to begin a watch repair business, so it included the ideal work space, all the tools necessary to begin an ultimately profitable business, all good information but more than I wanted or needed. It is sometimes difficult to read because a few sections are quite technical and include jargon, but I was also able to locate and understand the information I needed for my own home watch repairs.
Mechanical watch repair.......2007-05-25
I am amazed that this book (my edition printed in 2006) is an exact copy of a 1971 printing. Mechanical watches of today are readily described in this 35 year old text.
The 1971 dust jacket has hand drawn lettering. The 2006 dust jacket has been cleaned up by computer aided drawing. It was amazing to find out that the author passed away in 1989. He unfortunately lived long enough to see the Japanese demolish the mechanical watch industry.
This book does have a place in today's world...The mechanical Swiss Watch is making a comeback, although limited to those willing to invest in a $400 and up watch. But if you buy a good Swiss mechanical, it can be passed down and repaired by your heirs.. This book will probably still be available, when your heirloom is in need of repair...
Small steps can allow you to save .......2007-03-21
SImple things using the right tools and procedures can allow you to get the satisfaction for the simple repairs. I would suggest doing classes etc or going to a professional for the more advanced types of repairs. The book also allows you to gain an appreciation of actually what makes then tick and tock.
Practical Watch Repairing.......2007-01-10
Very useful and thorough watch repair instructions for mechanical watches. Much detail on repair procedures. Very useful for beginners. This book and Henry Fried's book,"The Watch Repairer's Manual,4th edition", are considered classics in the field. Get both if you can.
Book Description
In this book, the author has dealt with the usual faults likely to develop in each type of movement in a clock's general use, from the lordly grandfather to the humble alarm. All the tools and equipment are described and illustrated, together with the ways of using them. The craftsman's most important and valuable tools of all—his skillful fingers—are shown in use in the clearest manner. Over 400 line drawings have been specially made from parts under working conditions.
