3 out of 5 stars Torn, between story and style.......2006-12-24

I could not wait to pick up this book, a story of love and ghosts. Grange House sat forever on my shelf until the right moment... Wow. Not sure why I waited so long. My expectations were high. I was mildly disappointed.

Grange House was a little slow to get into. The beginning seemed to drag, in both content and writing. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of victorian writing; Grange House was written in the victorian writing style.

The parts of the book that I absolutely loved was the relationship between Maisie and Ms. Nell Grange. The setting, along the coast of Maine, was breath-taking in description. If you have ever been to the coast of ME, you too, will love this book for that alone. The mystery and ghost stories of visions is also enough to hold the interest. The story line picked up about 1/4 of the way into the reading, and it was enough to keep me wanting to find out what was on the next page, yet, still once completed I was not left with a feeling of "wanting to tell someone about this book". So...
I'd say 3.5 out of 5

5 out of 5 stars A Great Romance.......2006-01-23

This book has so many great plots and surprises! There wasn't a day that went by without me addicted to this book. It's about a girl named Maisie who every year travels to Grange House. She loves it there. This year is very different than any other. Maisie finds herself falling in love with two handsome young men. She discovers that the owner, Ms. Nell, is very ill. Ms. Nell is suddenly very interested into conversing with Maisie and sharing her secrets with her. Suddenly, a mystery comes into plot through Ms. Nell's diary and ghostly happenings at Grange House. Many people die and Maisie soon finds out that she's not who she thinks she is. I loved this book. It had everything, romance, adventure, horror, and a little history, though I don't know how true it is. I found this book looking for historical fiction, I got a little of that but so much more. I would definitely reccomend this book. Let me warn you though it has high vocabulary, and some mature subject matter. Yet, I still loved it greatly.

4 out of 5 stars An eerie coming of age novel with fun plot surprises...........2003-11-04

I picked up this novel to read during October, feeling in the mood for a little ghost tale. I didn't expect the fun bit of romance, the touching family story line, and good plot developement.

While I was hoping for a good ghost story, this isn't exactly that. It has 'ghosts' and other strange things which Maisie is 'gifted' enough to see, but it is not exactly scary. If you know this going in to it, you will make a better choice. Like I said earlier, it is touched with romance, eerie plot routes, sad deaths, and family issues as well, so it is much more then a simple 'spooky novel'.

Sarah Blake studied victorian literature, and to me this is the strong point of the book. Her writing is true to a style long forgotten, and she does it well. She takes you to the grange house, to the graveyard and hillsides, and weaves her story in a beautiful way. If you enjoy classic books this one is a modern version that will not let you down. If you like those coming of age tales where a young woman looks for love but really finds herself, with a twist of a haunting tale, this will be a great journey for you.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Gothic Tale.......2003-10-21

This is a beautifully written book. In many ways Brontean. However, the ultimate "secret" of the book was rather disappointing and altogether obvious, and the writer took oh so long to get to the rather tame conclusion, although she did it with great evocative power. As a literary work on the roles played by women at the dawn of the last century, it speaks quite clearly on the repression of women's creativity and subservience to the male establishment. However, for genuine storytelling in this genre, read the truly repressed women who were writing in the Victorian Age--the Brontes, Mrs. Henry Wood, George Eliot, et al.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped or expected.......2003-02-17

I was excited to read this book, based on reviews I had read here and elsewhere. Although I enjoyed the first half, I started to get bored with the ethereal language and obscurity of the main diary section. By the time the book resurfaced in present-day 1897, I was ready for some explanations and conclusions. Instead, Maisie's voice morphed into that of Nell Grange's diary--cloudy and self-absorbed. Certainly it was the author's intention to have the diary affect Maisie in this way, but I found it tedious. It took Maisie a lot longer to figure out the reality of who was who in the diary than it did me as a reader (save one twist); yet other mysteries remained unsolved (like why the couple at the beginning of the book died). By the end, I was reading just to get to the end, which was taking a lot longer than I wanted it to--not how I usually finish a book, not being able to put it down. Maybe I just don't appreciate Victorian gothic literature, but I remember enjoying Jane Eyre . . .

Will Oliver leave, or will he stay?

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fast paced, if improbable.......2005-04-05

Susannah Thorpe is a much tried and overworked governess in the Russell household, coping with the unruly sons of the house and her insufferable employers. Then all is changed by the call of Mr Sinders a solicitor. She has been named heiress to the late Mr Henry Harstairs to his fortune and a house in Cornwall. Harstairs was an old love her Great Aunt Caroline, the lady who raised her. There is one condition, that she live in Harstairs House located on the sea and very isolated. Rumoured even to be haunted.
Of course she accepts and travels there with Constance Morton, who was employed as Mrs. Russell's companion.
Upon arrival she discovers Oliver Bristow, who says he is the tenant and most certainly is not about to move out.
Thus the stage is set for rollicking adventure, as these two circle each other in mutual suspicion, attraction and plotting.
This is a good read, carrying one along at a fast pace. Both Susannah and Oliver are believable and likable characters. Oliver, of course has many secrets that are slowly revealed.
The only trouble was some of the over-the-top plot points. The introduction of the pursuing Captain of Militia and his murky motives was, frankly, unbelievable and the premise had more holes than a Swiss cheese.
Enjoyable nonetheless. Just don't think too much about the holes.

                  4 out of 5 stars Surprise Ending.......2004-07-30

Just finished this book. I liked the first three, and this fourth one, I liked as well... but maybe not as much. In Blood Trail and Blood Lines, I thought the mystery was a little too simple and too easily solved, although I did enjoy them. This book was definitely not a simple and easy read. The whole story was complicated, and the continuing triangle with Vicki, Henry and Mike added even more complications. The ending was definitely a surprise. I didn't see it coming at all, and for some reason I'm disappointed in what happened. Partly because I wanted to see the whole love triangle resolved in another way, but more so because it just changes too much. But I am looking forward to the fifth and final book of the series to see what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars 4th Book in the Series.......2004-04-02

Excellent Series - This is the fourth novel in Tanya Huff's excellent vampire series. This book and the entire series gets 5+ stars. Although I must admit I liked the first three books more, this still is an excellent continuation of the story involving Vicki, Mike and Henry. (If you have not read the entire series, you must read it, you will not be disappointed. The series order: Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact and Blood Debt).

This fourth book continues with Vicki, an ex cop turned private investigator, who had to leave the police force because she is losing her night vision. From previous novels you met Henry, a 400 year old vampire who is also a romantic writer, and Vicki's friend and lover. Also, you met Mike, Vicki's ex-partner, who is also involved with Vicki.

As the fourth book begins Vicki receives the telephone call that no one wants to receive. Her mother has died unexpectedly. Vicki has to come to grips with her mother's death, and at the same time if you have been reading the earlier books of the series, also has to finally deal with her relationship between Mike and Henry who both love her.

This book has some surprise twists, namely the fact that even though her mother is supposed to be dead, While Vicki is staying at her mother's house, she sees her in a window. Is she dead, or isn't she?

This fourth book had some surprise twists, and I must say I felt a little saddened for Henry in this series, who for so many centuries has been alone. But I won't give away more, you will have to read it to find out. A very excellent book if you are into the Tanya Huff series. I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Creepier and an unexpected ending.......2003-12-13

The characters get into full form and the plot is inticing. I'd never have seen the finale coming.

                  4 out of 5 stars interesting.......2003-09-15

I've been facinated with this series. The characters are definitely interesting, although, I care very little for the the main character, Vicki. Vicki has a horrible temper and I can't imagine why two attractive men would be so taken with her. The story plot is good even if the main character is so unlikable.

5 out of 5 stars Creepy with a capital creep..........2003-07-21

I thought the first three books in this series were great and this fourth was excellent! The relationships between Vicki, Henry, and Celluci have developed nicely and some parts of the book actually had me holding onto my seat, I was so tense waiting to see what would happen next. I can't read wait to read book #5, but unfortunately that will mean the series end. Guess I'll have to read the other Tanya Huff books, hey, good idea.

A race of intelligent primates has made a distant world their home. Over the years their numbers have grown. And now, needing more room, the colony sends scouts into theunknown land beyond. But by venturing forward, the apes are encroaching upon hostile ground -- where creatures dwell that can rip an adult simian to pieces in less than an instant; monstrous reptilians whose incredible savagery isequaled only by their awesome brainpower. To venture into their midst is almost certain doom -- but to remain behind would be suicide. Because another foe is lurking in the shadows: the enemy called Man. And in the ruins of a crashed human starship a hideous melding of brain, flesh, and metal lives on -- waiting ... plotting ... refusing to die as long as a single ape draws breath on the planet.

4 out of 5 stars Sequel to THE FALL is pretty good.......2005-05-07

Those who read PLANET OF THE APES: THE FALL might want to check this book out, since it continues the story. Like THE FALL, it is set in the Tim Burton movie continuity, but way before the events of that film. You see the apes in the early part of their history, as they colonize the planet, and deal with the conflicts that arise.

The book is fast-paced. The story was interesting and the characterization is pretty good. The focus is much more on the apes this time.

The content was toned down from THE FALL, which was nice. There is not nearly the amount of profanity. The left-wing elements were also not as strong. COLONY has more of a PG-13 feel.

When THE FALL was published in 2002, it was said to be the first in a new series. So far there are only two books in the series and there doesn't appear to be any more coming. If another one was published I would read it.

                    Product Description

In this lovely and personable cookbook, Mary Laird Mamady takes us back to the homeland of her grandmother-in-law, the highlands of Lebanon, where food is still prepared by families using recipes handed down from generation to generation. One of the glories of Middle Eastern cuisine is that once the basics are mastered it becomes easy to put together meals for four to fifty. This is truly food for communal dining, wonderfully festive to prepare for families and friends.

Here are ingredients redolent of their sun-baked origins burghul (bulgur), chick peas, feta cheese, rose flower water, and pine nuts. As in most traditional cooking, the presentations are friendly and informal, though the author who has traveled to Lebanon, testing familiar recipes, finding and experimenting with new ones is nonetheless an inventive and exacting cook. Evocatively atmospheric drawings by Jana Fothergill provide the prefect finishing touch. This is the definitive book on Lebanese regional food, and an important and beautiful resource for anyone interested in Middle Eastern cooking.

                    5 out of 5 stars a great book.......2004-07-01

This is one of my favorite cookbooks and has been since it was first published. I am delighted to see it is still available. It is one of two or three cookbooks that I have used consistently for over a decade. It is lovely to read, lovely to look at, but most important, lovely to cook out of. It makes a wonderful gift, which is why I was searching Amazon for it.

5 out of 5 stars Idiosyncratic and special.......1998-12-31

How can you not love a book that practically devotes a whole chapter to dehen, or rendered lamb fat? This book is different from most Middle Eastern cookbooks, and focuses closely on one area and culture. Many of the recipes are unusual, surprisingly easy, and authentic. It provides a window on Lebanese (Druze?) culture in both the U.S. and the old country. The recipe for chicken with sumac in this book, may be for the limited time, effort and money required to put it together, one of the world's greatest dishes, and it deserves to be better known.

                                        Book Description

Kevin McCloud has been acknowledged as one of the most innovative decorators working today. In this exciting book, he breaks new ground on the subject of paint and decorative techniques. From information on essential colors and the use of different paints, to an unequaled step-by-step section on a vast range of decorating techniques, Kevin McCloud's Complete Book of Paint and Decorative Techniques is a definitive guide to the subject, showing how to decorate any home with originality and style.

From the earthy hues of Italian farmhouses to the cool elegance of Scandinavian interiors, color has always played a crucial role in decorative schemes. In the first section of the book a unique cut-out color selector illustrates the eight essential earth colors on the decorator's palette and shows how to create and combine them successfully by clever intermixing of pigments. These essential colors, together with five secondary colors, are then used in the techniques throughout the book, so that all the stunning decorative effects can be easily recreated.

The techniques section that follows contains instructions and step-by-step photographs for more than 35 glorious decorative effects, plus countless variations. They range from more familiar techniques such as colorwashing and antiquing to exciting new effects such as cissing paint, which creates a play of light between a matte and a glossy surface by brushing an emulsion of acrylic paint over a dry coat of gloss. Each technique contains a list of essential ingredients, step-by-step photographs and a close-up of the finished surface or object. All elements of the home are covered, from walls, floors, and woodwork to furnishings and even individual objects such as lamp bases and picture frames. As well as the basic technique, further swatches illustrate a range of alternative colorways. Many of the effects featured in the book can be equally at home in contemporary or historical, sophisticated or informal settings, and to illustrate this versatility further, inspirational photographs show the techniques in different settings.

With more than 400 color photographs, Kevin McCloud's Complete Book of Paint and Decorative Techniques is an unrivaled reference. Whether you want to revamp a dull room, devise a striking color scheme, or restore your home in accurate period detail, this book has the information and inspiration you need.

If you are striving for excellence and becoming a master, this is the book for you. Recipes for making your own gesso, plasters, etc. are included along with good step by step photos.

This book was a pretty big disappointment. While McCloud does offer a strong presentation of color theory, he does not use realistic examples or materials in a way that someone could take advantage of his color knowledge. As an art historian he seems facinated with the techniques and materials that were used centuries ago. And while McCloud may have plenty of time to travel to France to purchase beautiful, pure, oxidized pigments and then mix them with homemade rabbit glue and curdled-milk concoctions to paint his wall, I for one and happy to have to folks at Lowes mix and shake for me. After all, most of us are just weekenders in this home improvement thing. All said and done, there's not much material about applying "regular" paint to a wall in such a way as to create interesting results. Great pictures, solid color theory (although color theory's been pretty well established for hundreds of years now), lots of info on how to mix paint like they did long ago -- not worth it.

As a professional I found this book an excellent addition to my paint book library. Mr. McCloud has used some new approaches to some old techniques. A great read, tremendous pics, very straightforward!!!!!

Thank goodness that this book is out there so that people won't forget the great comedy team of Jim and Marion Jordan.

With plenty of pictures to put faces to names, the book thorougly recounts the lives of Fibber McGee and Molly and their supporting cast.

It's a quick and easy read, and a great peek inside the lives of one of the great comic duos.

While "Fibber McGee and Molly" is still beloved by fans of Old Time Radio, for the general public, the names mean nothing. Nor do most people know who Jim and Marian Jordon were.

But for the curious, those who want to know more about the show, this is the book to read. Not only because it is well-researched with interviews with Jim Jordon and others, but also it is full of photographs of Jim and Marian both before and during their years at 79 Wistful Vista.

Listeners to the show know it evolved over the years. The earliest episodes are almost unenjoyable and bear little resemblance to the show at its height. Why did the show evolve? Look here to find out. Favorite characters would come and go. But where do you turn to find out why? This book! And what was behind the "Fibber McGee's closet" routine? How and why did it come about? This will tell you why. How did the show handle the drafting of many of its most important stars during World War Two? Turn to these pages. Why did Johnson Wax end sponsorship? And why did the Jordans decide against playing the roles on television? This is the definitive book to answer those questions.
Easy-to-read type; single space, packs a lot of fact on the page.
                                                  This book is invaluable!

Forget the fact that there is no other book on the subject, Stumpf's Heavenly Days is the most comprehensive work on this classic radio show. Half the book is pictures (yes, one on every other page), though the quality is sometimes less than wonderful. Anyone looking for a detailed log is going to be disappointed, but if you're seeking a historical account, richly detailed, this is exactly what you need. No wonder there's not been another book on Fibber. It's unnecessary.
