Book Description
An unprecedented collection of the best of Joyce Carol Oates's short stories combined with eleven new stories
No other writer can match the impressive oeuvre of Joyce Carol Oates, and High Lonesome: Selected Stories, 1966-2006 gathers stories from Oates's seminal collections, including The Wheel of Love (1970), Marriages and Infidelities (1972), and Heat (1991), arranged by decade. All demonstrate what the Chicago Tribune has praised: "the fierce originality of Oates's voice and vision, but also how she has imbued the American short story with an edgy vitality and raw social surfaces."
Customer Reviews:
Read this as your introduction.......2007-06-04
If you've never read Oates- read this for your introduction. It is beautiful and the stories seem prefectly picked. I loved how you can see her progression as an author and also the different paths she's followed in her fiction. Worth it's wait in gold- an then some.
A dark collection that is truly gripping!.......2007-03-15
Joyce Carol Oates is a gifted writer, and if you're a fan you won't want to miss adding this to your collection. The stories are pretty creepy, but nevertheless appeals to me for it really reveals the darker side of human nature. A gripping read!
Classic Collection.......2007-02-25
Joyce Carol Oates has been an amazingly prolific writer, of both novels and short fiction. This collection, although only a small portion of her literary output, is a must-have for any fan of her work. The fact that she also wrote the Afterword, explaining her decisions regarding which works to include (for the list was so vast that they couldn't all be in there!), is a plus. (Although I, too, regret her leaving out her "gothic" work, as she did.) Ms. Oates' work can be grim and dark, but I have always been drawn to it, probably because I prefer fiction that explores the darker side of life, and that focuses on the gray areas of reason and moral choices, as I find this much more interesting and thought-provoking. There are seldom, if ever, any tidy endings in her stories, but life moves inexorably forward nonetheless. Hope? Possibly, but often not, or hidden behind despair and longing. Truth? Absolutely, without gloves. Beautiful writing, fascinating stories and characters. Oates is not for everyone, but for those of us who value her work, this volume is a treasure.
The Best Oates Anthology Since 1994's Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been.......2006-10-05
Coming in at almost 700 pages and featuring eleven new stories as well as two-dozen classic short stories from the 1960's thru the end of the twentieth-century, plus commentary from Oates herself, this anthology represents a sweeping cross-section of this ingenious writer's best short fiction. Her tremendous talent as a novelist aside, I've always felt Oates was at her best when dealing with a short subject, and for anyone unacquainted with her writings it would be hard to find a better starting point for an introduction to one of America's greatest creative minds. As for Joyce Carol Oates' admirers, this is simply a must-possess volume.
While there is a lot of fine writing inside this collection, probably my favorite five stories in High Lonesome would be (in no special order):
Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been
How I Contemplated the World from the Detroit House of Corrections, and Began My Life Over Again
Heat
Four Summers
Concerning The Case of Bobby T.
Considering just how prolific Oates has been since the early 1960's and stopping for a moment to ponder the immensity of her output and all that is out there to be read, collections like this one are very nice, and I hope we soon see further volumes that gather in more of her incredible writings.
Comprehensive.......2006-09-09
High Lonesome is substantial. Both as physical object, a retrospective (of sorts) and a collection, it is a significant book. Joyce Carol Oates' self-selected tales run the gamut from haunting tales of revenge to close studies of family and relationships. The volume includes 13 new stories plus a sampling of Oates' work extending back to the '60s.
The book itself is a beautiful specimen. Bibliophiles owe it to themselves to give the book a look just for its high production value.
All that said, one begins to tire of Oates' oft-seen subjects (sisters, mothers/daughters) in familiar milieu (upstate New York). This is not a fault of the individual stories themselves, but rather having them all bunched together in one spot.
But Oates has an impressive range of voice and style, including the two new stories "The Fish Factory" and the eponymous "High Lonesome," both exquisite.

The Solar Queen saga continues.......2006-03-24
This is the fourth book in the Solar Queen series, which takes place in Andre Norton's Forerunner universe. (Click on my name to see the list.) The Solar Queen is a small spaceship that makes cargo runs among planets far from Earth. Many of them have not been well explored, some have been colonized, some are home to aliens, and many have the ruins of highly advanced alien civilizations that have vanished.
In "Postmarked the Stars," the Solar Queen has been assigned to make postal deliveries between two planets. All the familiar crew from previous books are here, but Dane almost gets left behind when the Queen lifts off, because he has been poisoned and replaced by a look-alike who promptly turns up dead. Someone has sabotaged the Queen's cargo, and the trouble continues to escalate after the ship sets down again. With no way to explain the dead body and damaged cargo, the crew tries to avoid the law and solve a mystery that ultimately has them running from gigantic alien creatures and homicidal criminals.
If you liked previous books in this series, you'll also enjoy this one. I rate it four stars because it isn't quite as good as the first two, but hey, it's a Solar Queen adventure! It was great to read another story about the old gang, all of them acting right in character, getting into their usual predicaments and handling it with their usual camaraderie.
This is the entire Solar Queen series:
1. Sargasso of Space (1955)
2. Plague Ship (1956)
3. Voodoo Planet (1959)
4. Postmarked the Stars (1969)
5. Redline the Stars, with PM Griffin (1993)
6. Derelict for Trade, with Sherwood Smith (1997)
7. A Mind for Trade, with Sherwood Smith (1997)
"Sargasso of Space" & "Plague Ship" have been reprinted recently in a single volume called "The Solar Queen," which is available at amazon.com.

Book Description
In southern Wyoming, an influenza epidemic sweeps in on the tails of a raging blizzard. An already tense situation between whites and the Cheyenne, Shoshoni, and Blackfoot Indian tribes is aggravated when the Indians begin attacking settlers and soldiers alike. Only the nearby Crow remain friendly, at one point even rescuing an army patrol under attack. When influenza and starvation threaten the Crow, Hannah and a young doctor come to their aid. The hungry settlers complain at first, but eventually come to admire and respect the example set by Hannah's Touch of Compassion.

Enjoying the Series - but Ready to Move Forward.......2000-11-15
I have read each of the Hannah of Fort Bridger Series, and am finishing up book 7 this week. I have really enjoyed the Christian basis of the series, though sometimes it seems a little too contrived and saccharin. Sometimes while reading, you think people really don't talk like this, especially when attesting to their faith. It is easy at times to 'guess' at the storyline and then 3 pages later see that it has happened.
Another issue that has bothered me about the series is that we are in book 6 and the baby that Hannah found she had conceived in book 1 has yet to be born. It is annoying how slow the pace of the books are, and even though they are adding new storylines and characters in each book - it would be nice to see Hannah's storyline developed and moving forward. However, I am still giving it a 4, as I have enjoyed the books, and am moving quickly through the series.
Book 6 deals with an influenza epidemic hitting the fort, town, and Crow Indian villiage near by, and the worst weather to hit the area in a generation which makes getting much needed food and medical supplies impossible. I found the book to be well-researched and enjoyed some of the history behind it - i.e. the medical proceedures used in treating the epidemic, the way the indian village contracted and treated the 'white man's disease', the rationing of food, etc.
This series is definately worth the read, as it is hard to find good Christian fiction. I would recommend these for a light read, however, or for a Youth in your life. They remind me a bit of the historical Christian fiction written by Janette Oke (Love comes Softly, etc.), though I enjoy Mrs. Oke's books a bit more as her's have a quicker pace and more realistic conversation.

With its fascinating introduction, colorful photographs and information on all the authentic ingredients, from chilies to chocolate, this is the essential guide to this fiery and flavorful cuisine.
Customer Reviews:
If you want to taste the real thing, you need this book!.......2007-01-13
I have a passion for authentic regional quisine, so often when we eat out, what you get served under the name of "Mexican", "Chinese" or whatever does not bear much resemblance to the actual cuisine eaten in those countries. Here in Australia, most Mex is just heaps of meat, tasteless beans and stale salad drowned in too-salty salsa and tonnes of cheese! Very heavy and fatty.
Compared to that scenario, Jane Milton's "Practical Encyclopedia of Mexican Cooking" is a revelation! There are plenty of easy to follow, simple recipes with great photos (so you can tell if your result looks anything like it should). The recipes are also very diverse and represent the broad range of exciting flavours that are Mexican Cuisine.
I have so far tried many of the recipes in this book and have had very enthusiastic responses from dinner guests, surprised at the lightness, freshness and subtle variety of flavours that are part of authentic Mex.
There are lots of hot, cold and alcoholic drink recipes as well to round out your feast.
The part I love most about this book is all the historical information about recipes and foods and how all of that relates to the history of the country itself. For example, I did not know that chocolate originated in Mexico and was taken back to Europe by visitors, or that the Germans introduced the art of beer-making to the country.
The glossary of ingredients if fabulous also, and includes similar historical/ background info.
In summary, this book is very comprhensive, very authentic, thorough and easy to use on a day-today basis!
You may find, as I have, that many of your other cookbooks get dusty on the shelf as you explore the delights of Jane Milton's "Practical Encyclopedia of Mexican Cooking"!!
Book Description
The conservation of skin, leather and related materials is an area that, until now, has had little representation by the written word in book form. Marion Kite and Roy Thomson, of the Leather Conservation Centre, have prepared a text which is both authoritative and comprehensive, including contributions from the leading specialists in their fields, such as Betty Haines, Mary Lou Florian, Ester Cameron and Jim Spriggs.
The book covers all aspects of Skin and Leather preservation, from Cuir Bouillie to Bookbindings. There is significant discussion of the technical and chemical elements necessary in conservation, meaning that professional conservators will find the book a vital part of their collection.
As part of the Butterworth-Heinemann Black series, the book carries the stamp of approval of the leading figures in the world of Conservation and Museology, and as such it is the only publication available on the topic carrying this immediate mark of authority.
* First book to cover the subject comprehensively
* Wide coverage, including Fish and Reptiles, Taxidermy and Furs, making it invaluable for conservator, curator and collector alike
* Technical aspects of conservation discussed in full

Must have.......1998-10-20
Another reviewer had a very detailed description of this book which all who are interested in this title should read. I generally like more sohisticated designs and I absolutely loved all the Father Christmases that make up a nice portion of the book. This book really caters to all tastes.
If you could only have one book for the long winter nights.......1997-07-31
I have long been a fan of the Vanessa-Anne house style, but this book is a perfect culmination of all their previous work. The collection covers a wide range from simple Amish samplers to complex needle-art pictures. There are five headings covering birth, special events such as weddings keep-sakes for friends and family, decorations for the home, lovely alphabet samplers, and my particular, favourite, the Chirstmas collection. This is a group of seven different Father Chismas pictures, which cover all ethnic origins but could be worked as a harmonious whole if you were skilled enough. Even if like me, you felt a lot of the work was beyond your skills the sheer beauty of this book would lure you on to greater artistic endevour. The art work is of a very high standard being both clear and easy to read. So often needle-work books are let down by poor rendition and mean use of colour. This is most assuredly not the case with this book. Another nice touch is the way the finished projects are diplayed in various settings to further whet the appitite.
I first came across this book in a review featured in a American needle-work magazine and was so taken by the look of it that I ordered it through a book-seller who was who was going to the states. ( I live in England) Even though I was agast at the price, this being pre-online ordering, I have used and browsed this book almost more than any other in my vast collection. In fact my significant other says if he has to share his space with much more of my collection he is moving out to the garden shed. But if I didn't already have this I would feel it a risk well worth the taking. Truly a book to help pass the balmy summer evenings, and get you through the long winter nights

Forget about those old bed-in-a-bag deals--California Design Studio's gorgeous book, Bedrooms, is ready to help you create a personal, comfortable haven that is totally unique. Dazzling photography combines with suggestions straight from designers to form a book as lovely as it is practical. Finishing with a source guide, you can get started on redecorating right away--although most stores are located in California, there's plenty of national chains and mail order choices as well.
Practical considerations cover adding a home office or bookshelves, as well as appropriate choices for window coverings and mattresses. The sections devoted to rooms for guests and children show special thought for the different concerns in those areas--tired guests deserve a truly relaxing space, while it's important that children's rooms can grow with them (avoid that Pokeacute;mon bedspread--will they like it as teens?) Simple updates made with paint and fabric are suggested repeatedly, making the point that there's no need to break your budget to achieve a new look. However, this book doesn't provide much in the way of step-by-step instructions for those improvements, but certainly, for providing inspiration, it's one of the best. As it's a lightweight paperback, it's perfect for curling up in bed with in the evening. Who knows what changes you'll dream up? --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Bedrooms showcases more than 25 bright and beautiful ways to take the night's rest. Including tips for selecting such fundamentals as bed frames, mattresses, and linens, it also offers sound advice on window coverings, art, accessories, furniture, lighting, and color. It even covers what to do when the bedroom doubles as a living room or office. A compendium of great ideas, Bedrooms lets you create your ideal sanctuary for sleep, solitude, and relaxation.
Customer Reviews:
A book that will expand the possibilities for your bedroom........2002-12-31
If you feel stumped for ideas on how to design a bedroom, and you have a limited budget, Bedrooms will help release you from that in-the-box mentality that you get from strolling through one too many furniture showrooms that encourage you to buy a complete bedroom set. Do not be fooled by the "(California Design)" in the title, this is not a book of California-esque bedroom design, rather, it's a book of interior design for the bedroom by a collection of California designers. The designs covered range from minimalist, to grand, to traditional, to just plain homey. Certainly, the numerous color photographs throughout represent people who, in most cases, probably spent a lot of money to have their bedrooms designed as shown, but it is not at all hard to imagine how to apply the same methods to your create own dream bedroom even with things you buy at a flea market.
From this book I learned that I could mix and match furniture, not just in the bedroom, but elsewhere, and utilize the eclectic "stuff" I already own to create a comfortable atmosphere. You will not find a step-by-step guide in these pages, rather you will find lovely photos and frequently asked questions covered such as: Should a TV be in a bedroom and how? What can one do with a small room? How can I create a romantic bedroom? How can one design a room that will not look dated too soon? What paint colors are best for a bedroom?
Aside from the design-ideas aspect of Bedrooms, I just enjoy looking at the photos for relaxation.
Excellent resource for ideas and design philosophy........2000-02-03
I am in the final stages of building my dream home and just purchased this book. I only wish I had bought it sooner! This book gives me the confidence to blend my antiques with new surroundings. Diane displays a variety of styles that will withstand the test of time.

Digging for dirt in old time Hollywood.......2005-10-16
This book surprised me in one peculiar respect. Except for the last chapter, I thought it was a better book when I finished reading it than I did while I was reading it. The reason was that I sensed a "holier than thou" attitude in the author in the early chapters and in the final chapter where, rather than simply telling his story, he seemed to pick and choose those whom he liked and disliked and then wrote disparagingly about the latter. With that one exception in the final chapter, he managed to somewhat stifle himself in the latter part of the book making for much better reading.
The best thing about this book is that it presents some interesting and apparently factual information about Hollywood and those who populated the film industry in its formative and midlife years. The worst things about the book, at least in my view, are: 1) too much time is spent delineating the achievements of relatively unknown characters seemingly to justify why they are included in the book; 2) the author's seeming condescension --- just tell the story; and 3) the author's obvious stretch in the book's final chapter in an obvious attempt to besmirch Ronald Reagan (This was uncalled for and completely out of context with regard to the rest of the book. I.e., who cares that some other actors didn't like Reagan or his politics, or what the author's opinion of Reagan might be?).
In summary: If you are interested in the history of Hollywood and recognize most of the following names, you will probably find this book to be of interest: Joseph P. Kennedy, Chester Morris, Elizabeth Short, Donald Berry, George Reeves, Peg Entwistle, Nick Adams, Alan Ladd, Margaret Sullavan, Ona Munson, and Clara Blandick. (Hints: bootlegger & unscrupulous theater chain owner (also father of a U.S. President), "Boston Blackie", the "Black Dahlia", "Red Ryder", TV's "Superman", Hollywood sign suicide, TV's "Rebel", "Shane", star of "The Shop Around the Corner" (prototype for "You've got Mail"), Rhett Butler's prostitute friend in "Gone With the Wind," and "Auntie Em".).
Caution: After reading this book you may conclude that the Hollywood stars of yesteryear were not the wholesome, brilliantly intellectual, morally straight, and down-to-Earth crowd we see today.
